Pattern Formation Simulated by an Ising Machine

In a ferromagnetic Ising system, domain pattern formation, i.e., phase-ordering, occurs after a sudden quench. We propose the method to simulate the pattern formation dynamics by an Ising machine. We demonstrate that the method reproduces domain patterns similar to those simulated by the Monte Carlo method. Moreover, the same domain growth law is observed in the proposed method and the Monte Carlo method.

Image Analysis Based on Nonnegative/Binary Matrix Factorization

Using nonnegative/binary matrix factorization (NBMF), a matrix can be decomposed into a nonnegative matrix and a binary matrix. Our analysis of facial images, based on NBMF and using the Fujitsu Digital Annealer, leads to successful image reconstruction and image classification. The NBMF algorithm converges in fewer iterations than those required for the convergence of nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF), although both techniques perform comparably in image classification.

Localization in the constrained quantum annealing of graph coloring

Constrained quantum annealing (CQA) is a quantum annealing approach that is designed so that constraints are satisfied without penalty terms. There is an analogy between the model for the CQA of graph coloring and a set of disordered spin chains. In the model for the CQA of graph coloring, disorder corresponds to the fluctuation of effective local fields that increase in a CQA process. Numerical simulations of effective fields and entanglement demonstrate how localization appears in the CQA. Some notable features appear in the concurrence, which is a measure of entanglement, plotted as a function of the fluctuation of effective fields.

Scale-invariant relaxation dynamics in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with large particle-number imbalance

We theoretically study the scale-invariant relaxation dynamics in segregating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with large particle-number imbalance, and uncover that random walk of droplet for the minor component plays a fundamental role in the relaxation process. Our numerical simulations based on the binary Gross-Pitaevskii model reveal the emergence of the dynamical scaling during the relaxation, which is a hallmark of scale-invariant dynamics, in a correlation function for the minor condensate. Tracking exponents characterizing the dynamical scaling in time, we find out a crossover phenomenon that features the change in power exponents of the correlation length. To understand the fundamental mechanism inherent in the scale-invariant relaxation dynamics, we construct a random walk model for droplets. Employing the model, we analytically derive the $1/3$ and $1/2$ power laws and predict the crossover of the scaling. These exponents are in reasonable agreement with the values obtained in the numerical calculations. We also discuss a possible experimental setup for observing the scale-invariant dynamics.

Effects of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert damping on domain growth

Domain patterns are simulated by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation with an easy-axis anisotropy. If the Gilbert damping is removed from the LLG equation, it merely describes the precession of magnetization with a ferromagnetic interaction. However, even without the damping, domains that look similar to those of scalar fields are formed, and they grow with time. It is demonstrated that the damping has no significant effects on domain growth laws and large-scale domain structure. In contrast, small-scale domain structure is affected by the damping. The difference in small-scale structure arises from energy dissipation due to the damping.

Coarsening dynamics driven by vortex-antivortex annihilation in ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates

In ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), the quadratic Zeeman effect controls magnetic anisotropy, which affects on magnetic domain pattern formation. While the longitudinal magnetization is dominant (similar to the Ising model) for a negative quadratic Zeeman energy, the transverse magnetization is dominant (similar to the XY model) for a positive one. When the quadratic Zeeman energy is positive, the coarsening dynamics is driven by vortex-antivortex annihilation in the same way as the XY model. However, due to superfluid flow of atoms, there exist several combinations of vortex-antivortex pairs in ferromagnetic BECs, which makes the coarsening dynamics more complicated than that of the XY model. We propose a revised domain growth law, which is based on the growth law of the two-dimensional XY model, for a two-dimensional ferromagnetic BEC with a positive quadratic Zeeman energy.

Spread of Infectious Diseases with a Latent Period

Infectious diseases spread through human networks. Susceptible-Infected-Removed (SIR) model is one of the epidemic models to describe infection dynamics on a complex network connecting individuals. In the metapopulation SIR model, each node represents a population (group) which has many individuals. In this paper, we propose a modified metapopulation SIR model in which a latent period is taken into account. We call it SIIR model. We divide the infection period into two stages: an infected stage, which is the same as the previous model, and a seriously ill stage, in which individuals are infected and cannot move to the other populations. The two infectious stages in our modified metapopulation SIR model produce a discontinuous final size distribution. Individuals in the infected stage spread the disease like individuals in the seriously ill stage and never recover directly, which makes an effective recovery rate smaller than the given recovery rate.

Magnetic domain growth in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate: Effects of current

Magnetic domain patterns in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) show different properties depending on the quadratic Zeeman effect and dissipation. Another important factor that affects domain patterns and domain growth is superfluid flow of atoms. Domain growth in a ferromagnetic BEC with negative quadratic Zeeman energy is characterized by the same growth law as (classical) binary fluid in the inertial hydrodynamic regime. In the absence of the superfluid flow, the domain growth law for negative quadratic Zeeman energy is the same as that of scalar conserved fields such as binary alloys.

Dissipative hydrodynamic equation of a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate: Analogy to magnetization dynamics in conducting ferromagnets

The hydrodynamic equation of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) gives a simple description of spin dynamics in the condensate. We introduce the hydrodynamic equation of a ferromagnetic BEC with dissipation originating from the energy dissipation of the condensate. The dissipative hydrodynamic equation has the same form as an extended Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation, which describes the magnetization dynamics of ferromagnets interacting with spin-polarized currents. Employing the dissipative hydrodynamic equation, we demonstrate the magnetic domain pattern dynamics of a ferromagnetic BEC in the presence and absence of a current of particles, and discuss the effects of the current on domain pattern formation. We also discuss the characteristic lengths of domain patterns that have domain walls with and without finite magnetization.

Phenomenological model for ordered onions under shear flow

We propose a phenomenological model for the multi-lamellar vesicles (onions) formation induced by shear flow. In a nonionic surfactant (C$_{12}$E$_4$) system, onion phases under a fixed shear flow within a certain range show the order-disorder transition accompanied with a size jump by changing temperature. Our model can simulate ordered and disordered onion phases with different onion sizes. We show numerical results of the onion formation simulated by the model and also discuss what factors in this system are critical to cause the transition between these two different onion phases.

Hydrodynamic equation of a spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

We introduce equations of motion for spin dynamics in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, written using a vector expressing the superfluid velocity and a complex scalar describing the magnetization. This simple hydrodynamical description extracts the dynamics of spin wave and affords a straightforward approach by which to investigate the spin dynamics of the condensate. To demonstrate the advantages of the description, we illustrate dynamical instability and magnetic fluctuation preference, which are expressed in analytical forms.

Spontaneous Magnetic Ordering in a Ferromagnetic Spinor Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensate

We study the spin dynamics in a spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interaction (MDDI) based on the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov theories. We find that various magnetic structures such as checkerboards and stripes emerge in the course of the dynamics due to the combined effects of spin-exchange interaction, MDDI, quadratic Zeeman and finite-size effects, and non-stationary initial conditions. However, the short-range magnetic order observed by the Berkeley group [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 100}, 170403 (2008)] is not fully reproduced in our calculations; the periodicity of the order differs by a factor of three and the checkerboard pattern eventually dissolves in our numerical simulations. Possible reasons for the discrepancy are discussed.

Magnetic Domain Patterns Depending on the Sweeping Rate of Magnetic Fields

The domain patterns in a thin ferromagnetic film are investigated in both experiments and numerical simulations. Magnetic domain patterns under a zero field are usually observed after an external magnetic field is removed. It is demonstrated that the characteristics of the domain patterns depend on the decreasing rate of the external field, although it can also depend on other factors. Our numerical simulations and experiments show the following properties of domain patterns: a sea-island structure appears when the field decreases rapidly from the saturating field to the zero field, while a labyrinth structure is observed for a slowly decreasing field. The mechanism of the dependence on the field sweeping rate is discussed in terms of the concepts of crystallization.
