1D Majorana Goldstinos and partial supersymmetry breaking in quantum wires

Realizing Majorana modes in topological superconductors, i.e., the condensed-matter counterpart of Majorana fermions in particle physics, may lead to a major advance in the field of topologically-protected quantum computation. Here, we introduce one-dimensional, counterpropagating, and dispersive Majorana modes as bulk excitations of a periodic chain of partially-overlapping, zero-dimensional Majorana modes in proximitized nanowires via periodically-modulated fields. This system realizes centrally-extended quantum-mechanical supersymmetry with spontaneous partial supersymmetry breaking. The massless Majorana modes are the Nambu-Goldstone fermions (Goldstinos) associated with the spontaneously broken supersymmetry. Their experimental fingerprint is a dip-to-peak transition in the zero-bias conductance, which is generally not expected for Majorana modes overlapping at a finite distance. Moreover, the Majorana modes can slide along the wire by applying a rotating magnetic field, realizing a "Majorana pump". This may suggest new braiding protocols and implementations of topological qubits.

Core structures of vortices in Ginzburg-Landau theory for neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids

We investigate vortex solutions in the Ginzburg-Landau theory for neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids relevant for neutron star cores in which neutron pairs possess the total angular momentum $J=2$ with spin-triplet and $P$ wave, in the presence of the magnetic field parallel to the angular momentum of vortices. The ground state is known to be in the uniaxial nematic (UN) phase in the absence of magnetic field, while it is in the $D_2$ ($D_4$) biaxial nematic (BN) phase in the presence of the magnetic field below (above) the critical value. We find that a singly quantized vortex always splits into two half-quantized non-Abelian vortices connected by soliton(s) as a vortex molecule with any strength of the magnetic field. In the UN phase, two half-quantized vortices with ferromagnetic cores are connected by a linear soliton with the $D_4$ BN order. In the $D_2$ ($D_4$) BN phase, two half-quantized vortices with cyclic cores are connected by three linear solitons with the $D_4$ ($D_2$) BN order. The energy of the vortex molecule monotonically increases and the distance between the two half-quantized vortices decreases with the magnetic field increases, except for a discontinuously increasing jump of the distance at the critical magnetic field. We also construct an isolated half-quantized non-Abelian vortex in the $D_4$ BN phase.

Dispersive 1D Majorana modes with emergent supersymmetry in 1D proximitized superconductors via spatially-modulated potentials and magnetic fields

In condensed matter systems, zero-dimensional or one-dimensional Majorana modes can be realized respectively as the end and edge states of one-dimensional and two-dimensional topological superconductors. In this $\textit{top-down}$ approach, $(d-1)$-dimensional Majorana modes are obtained as the boundary states of a topologically nontrivial $d$-dimensional bulk. In a $\textit{bottom-up}$ approach instead, $d$-dimensional Majorana modes in a $d$-dimensional system can be realized as the continuous limit of a periodic lattice of coupled $(d-1)$-dimensional Majorana modes. We illustrate this idea by considering one-dimensional proximitized superconductors with spatially-modulated potential or magnetic fields. The ensuing inhomogeneous topological state exhibits one-dimensional counterpropagating Majorana modes with finite dispersion, and with a Majorana gap that can be controlled by external fields. In the massless case, the Majorana modes have opposite Majorana polarizations and pseudospins, are conformally invariant, and realize centrally extended quantum mechanical supersymmetry. The supersymmetry exhibits spontaneous partial breaking. Consequently, the massless Majorana fermion can be identified as a Goldstino, i.e., the Nambu-Goldstone fermion associated with the spontaneously broken supersymmetry.

Exact Ground States and Domain Walls in One Dimensional Chiral Magnets

We determine exactly the phase structure of a chiral magnet in one spatial dimension with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and a potential that is a function of the third component of the magnetization vector, $n_3$, with a Zeeman (linear with the coefficient $B$) term and an anisotropy (quadratic with the coefficient $A$) term, constrained so that $2A\leq \vert B\vert$. For large values of potential parameters $A$ and $B$, the system is in one of the ferromagnetic phases, whereas it is in the spiral phase for small values. In the spiral phase we find a continuum of spiral solutions, which are one-dimensionally modulated solutions with various periods. The ground state is determined as the spiral solution with the lowest average energy density. As the phase boundary approaches, the period of the lowest energy spiral solution diverges, and the spiral solutions become domain wall solutions with zero energy at the boundary. The energy of the domain wall solutions is positive in the homogeneous phase region, but is negative in the spiral phase region, signaling the instability of the homogeneous (ferromagnetic) state. The order of the phase transition between spiral and homogeneous phases and between polarized ($n_3=\pm 1$) and canted ($n_3\not=\pm 1$) ferromagnetic phases is found to be second order.

Reducing the O(3) model as an effective field theory

We consider the O(3) or CP(1) nonlinear sigma model as an effective field theory in a derivative expansion, with the most general Lagrangian that obeys O(3), parity and Lorentz symmetry. We work out the complete list of possible operators (terms) in the Lagrangian and eliminate as many as possible using integrations by parts. We further show at the four-derivative level, that the theory can be shown to avoid the Ostrogradsky instability, because the dependence on the d'Alembertian operator or so-called box, can be eliminated by a field redefinition. Going to the six-derivative order in the derivative expansion, we show that this can no longer be done, unless we are willing to sacrifice Lorentz invariance. By doing so, we can eliminate all dependence on double time derivatives and hence the Ostrogradsky instability or ghost, however, we unveil a remaining dynamical instability that takes the form either as a spiral instability or a runaway instability and estimate the critical field norm, at which the instability sets off.

Relations among topological solitons

We clarify relations among topological solitons in various dimensions: a domain wall, non-Abelian vortex, magnetic monopole and Yang-Mills instanton, together with a (non-Abelian) sine-Gordon soliton, baby Skyrmion (lump) and Skyrmion. We construct a composite configuration consisting of a domain wall, vortex, magnetic monopole and Yang-Mills instanton (wall-vortex-monopole-instanton) using the effective theory technique or moduli approximation. Removing some solitons from such a composite, we obtain all possible composite solitons in the form of solitons within a soliton, including all the previously known configurations, yielding relations among topological solitons.

Exact WKB analysis of the vacuum pair production by time-dependent electric fields

We study the vacuum pair production by a time-dependent strong electric field based on the exact WKB analysis. We identify the generic structure of a Stokes graph for systems with the vacuum pair production and show that the number of produced pairs is given by a product of connection matrices for Stokes segments connecting pairs of turning points. We derive an explicit formula for the number of produced pairs, assuming the semi-classical limit. The obtained formula can be understood as a generalization of the divergent asymptotic series method by Berry, and is consistent with other semi-classical methods such as the worldline instanton method and the steepest descent evaluation of the Bogoliubov coefficients done by Brezin and Izykson. We also use the formula to discuss effects of time-dependence of the applied strong electric field including the interplay between the perturbative multi-photon pair production and non-peturbative Schwinger mechanism, and the dynamically assisted Schwinger mechanism.

Fractional black $p$-branes on orbifold ${\mathbb C}^n/{\mathbb Z}_n$

The recent discovery of an explicit solution of a black hole on the resolved orbifold ${\mathbb C}^n/{\mathbb Z}_n$ makes it possible to investigate the existence of $p$-branes on the orbifold. In particular, it is possible with reasonable precision to verify the prediction that an M2-brane on ${\mathbb C}^4/{\mathbb Z}_4$ in eleven dimensions and a D3-brane on ${\mathbb C}^3/{\mathbb Z}_3$ in ten dimensions have a family of black $p$-branes on the orbifold ${\mathbb C}^n/{\mathbb Z}_n$. These solutions are extremal and have regular horizons $S^{2n-1}/{\mathbb Z}_n$ without any naked singularity, with near horizon geometries AdS${}_{p+2}\times S^{2n-1}/{\mathbb Z}_n$.

Global 3-group symmetry and 't Hooft anomalies in axion electrodynamics

We investigate a higher-group structure of massless axion electrodynamics in $(3+1)$ dimensions. By using the background gauging method, we show that the higher-form symmetries necessarily have a global semistrict 3-group (2-crossed module) structure, and exhibit 't Hooft anomalies of the 3-group. In particular, we find a cubic mixed 't Hooft anomaly between 0-form and 1-form symmetries, which is specific to the higher-group structure.

Higher Derivative Supersymmetric Nonlinear Sigma Models on Hermitian Symmetric Spaces, and BPS States Therein

We formulate four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on Hermitian symmetric spaces with higher derivative terms, free from the auxiliary field problem and the Ostrogradski's ghosts, as gauged linear sigma models. We then study Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield equations preserving 1/2 or 1/4 supersymmetries. We find that there are distinct branches, that we call canonical ($F=0$) and non-canonical ($F\neq 0$) branches, associated with solutions to auxiliary fields $F$ in chiral multiplets. For the ${\mathbb C}P^N$ model, we obtain a supersymmetric ${\mathbb C}P^N$ Skyrme-Faddeev model in the canonical branch while in the non-canonical branch the Lagrangian consists of solely the ${\mathbb C}P^N$ Skyrme-Faddeev term without a canonical kinetic term. These structures can be extended to the Grassmann manifold $G_{M,N} = SU(M)/[SU(M-N)\times SU(N) \times U(1)]$. For other Hermitian symmetric spaces such as the quadric surface $Q^{N-2}=SO(N)/[SO(N-2) \times U(1)])$, we impose F-term (holomorphic) constraints for embedding them into ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ or Grassmann manifold. We find that these constraints are consistent in the canonical branch but yield additional constraints on the dynamical fields thus reducing the target spaces in the non-canonical branch.

Non-Abelian Half-Quantum Vortices in ${}^{3}P_{2}$ Topological Superfluids

${}^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids realized in neutron stars are the largest topological quantum matters in our Universe. We establish the existence and stability of non-Abelian half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in ${}^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids with strong magnetic fields. Using a self-consistent microscopic approach, we find that a singly quantized vortex is energetically destabilized into a pair of two non-Abelian HQVs owing to the strongly spin-orbit-coupled pairing. We find a topologically protected Majorana fermion on each HQV, thereby providing two-fold non-Abelian anyons characterized by both Majorana fermions and a non-Abelian first homotopy group.

Chemical bonds of two vortex species with a generalized Josephson term and arbitrary charges

We consider the Abelian-Higgs model with two complex scalar fields and arbitrary positive integer charges with the addition of a higher-order generalization of the Josephson term. The theory possesses vortices of both local and global variants. The only finite-energy configurations are shown to be the local vortices for which a certain combination of vortex numbers and electric charges -- called the global vortex number -- vanishes. The local vortices have rational fractional magnetic flux, as opposed to the global counterparts that can have an arbitrary fractional flux. The global vortices have angular domain walls, which we find good analytic approximate solutions for. Finally, we find a full classification of the minimal local vortices as well as a few nonminimal networks of vortices, using numerical methods.

Coexistence phase of $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids in neutron stars

In neutron star matter, there exist $^{1}S_{0}$ superfluids in lower density in the crust while $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids are believed to exist at higher density deep inside the core. In the latter, depending on the temperature and magnetic field, either the uniaxial nematic phase, the D$_{2}$-biaxial nematic phase, or the D$_{4}$-biaxial nematic phase appears. In this paper, we discuss a mixture of the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids and find their coexistence. Adopting the loop expansion and the weak-coupling approximation for the interaction between two neutrons, we obtain the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) free energy in which both of the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{2}$ condensates are taken into account by including the coupling terms between them. We analyze the GL free energy and obtain the phase diagram for the temperature and magnetic field. We find that the $^{1}S_{0}$ superfluid excludes the $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid completely in the absence of magnetic field, they can coexist for weak magnetic fields, and the $^{1}S_{0}$ superfluid is expelled by the $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid at strong magnetic fields, thereby proving the robustness of $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid against the magnetic field. We further show that the D$_{4}$-BN phase covers the whole region of the $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluidity as a result of the coupling term, in contrast to the case of a pure $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid studied before in which the D$_{4}$-BN phase is realized only under strong magnetic fields. Thus, the D$_{4}$-BN phase is topologically the most interesting phase, e.g., admitting half-quantized non-Abelian vortices relevant not only in magnetars but also in ordinary neutron stars.

Critical endpoint and universality class of neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids in neutron stars

We study the thermodynamics and critical behavior of neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids in the inner cores of neutron stars. $^3P_2$ superfluids offer a rich phase diagram including uniaxial/biaxial nematic phases, the ferromagnetic phase, and the cyclic phase. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation as superfluid Fermi liquid theory, we show that a strong (weak) magnetic field drives the first (second) order transition from the dihedral-two biaxial nematic phase to dihedral-four biaxial nematic phase in low (high) temperatures, and their phase boundaries are divided by the critical endpoint (CEP). We demonstrate that the set of critical exponents at the CEP satisfies the Rushbrooke, Griffiths, and Widom equalities, indicating a new universality class. At the CEP, the $^3P_2$ superfluid exhibits critical behavior with nontrivial critical exponents, indicating a new universality class. Furthermore, we find that the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation up to the 8th-order expansion satisfies three equalities and properly captures the physics of the CEP. This implies that the GL theory can provide a tractable way for understanding critical phenomena which may be realized in the dense core of realistic magnetars.

Domain walls in neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids in neutron stars

We work out domain walls in neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids realized in the core of neutron stars. Adopting the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory as a bosonic low-energy effective theory, we consider configurations of domain walls interpolating ground states, i.e., the uniaxial nematic (UN), D$_{2}$-biaxial nematic (D$_{2}$-BN), and D$_{4}$-biaxial nematic (D$_{4}$-BN) phases in the presence of zero, small and large magnetic fields, respectively. We solve the Euler-Lagrange equation from the GL free energy density, and calculate surface energy densities of the domain walls. We find that one extra Nambu-Goldstone mode is localized in the vicinity of a domain wall in the UN phase while a U(1) symmetry restores in the vicinity of one type of domain wall in the D$_{2}$-BN phase and all domain walls in the D$_{4}$-BN phase. Considering a pile of domain walls in the neutron stars, we find that the most stable configurations are domain walls perpendicular to the magnetic fields piled up in the direction along the magnetic fields in the D$_{2}$-BN and D$_{4}$-BN phases. We estimate the energy released from the deconstruction of the domain walls in the edge of a neutron star, and show that it can reach an astrophysical scale such as glitches in neutron stars.

Dynamics of Nambu monopole in two Higgs doublet models -- Cosmological Monopole Collider --

We study the dynamics of the Nambu monopole in two Higgs doublet models, which is a magnetic monopole attached by two topological $Z$ strings ($Z$ flux tubes) from two opposite sides. The monopole is a topologically stable solution of the equation of motions when the Higgs potential has global $U(1)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetries. In this paper, we consider more general cases without the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, and find that it is no longer a static solution but moves along the $Z$ string being pulled by the heavier string. After analytically constructing an asymptotic form of the monopole, we confirm such a motion using the numerical relaxation method. In addition, we analyze the real time dynamics of the monopole based on a point-like approximation. Consequently, if there were long string networks with the monopoles in the early universe, the monopole accelerates nearly to the speed of light emitting electromagnetic radiations as a synchrotron accelerator, and collides to an anti-monopole on the string. This collision event, which we call the cosmological monopole collider, can produce much heavier particles than those we can see today, e.g., at the Large Hadron Collider.

Emergent discrete 3-form symmetry and domain walls

We show that axion models with the domain wall number $k$ in $(3+1)$ dimensions, i.e., periodic scalar field theories admitting $k$ axion domain walls, exhibit an emergent ${\mathbb Z}_k$ 3-form symmetry for $k >1$ in addition to a conventional ${\mathbb Z}_k$ 0-form symmetry. The emergent 3-form symmetry is explicitly shown by establishing a low-energy dual transformation between the scalar field theory and a 3-form gauge theory. We further argue that the emergent 3-form symmetry is spontaneously broken, and the breaking pattern is so-called the type-B spontaneous symmetry breaking. We discuss similar and different points between the phase admitting the domain walls and topologically ordered phases.

Exact solutions of domain wall junctions in arbitrary dimensions

Exact analytic solutions of static, stable, non-planar BPS domain wall junctions are obtained in extended Abelian-Higgs models in $(D+1)$-dimensional spacetime. For specific choice of mass parameters, the Lagrangian is invariant under the symmetric group ${\cal S}_{D+1}$ of degree $D+1$ spontaneously broken down to ${\cal S}_D$ in vacua, admitting ${\cal S}_{D+1}/{\cal S}_D$ domain wall junctions. In $D=2$, there are three vacua and three domain walls meeting at a junction point, in which the conventional topological charges $Y$ and $Z$ exist for the BPS domain wall junctions and the BPS domain walls, respectively as known before. In $D=3$, there are four vacua, six domain walls, four junction lines on which three domain walls meet, and one junction point on which all the six domain walls meet. We define a new topological charge $X$ for the junction point in addition to the conventional topological charges $Y$ and $Z$. In general dimensions, we find that the configuration expressed in the $D$-dimensional real space is dual to a regular $D$-simplex in the $D$-dimensional internal space and that a $d$-dimensional subsimplex of the regular $D$-simplex corresponds to a $(D-d)$-dimensional intersection. Topological charges are generalized to the level-$d$ wall charge $W_d$ for the $d$-dimensional subsimplexes.

Exhausting all exact solutions of BPS domain wall networks in arbitrary dimensions

We obtain full moduli parameters for generic non-planar BPS networks of domain walls in an extended Abelian-Higgs model with $N$ complex scalar fields, and exhaust all exact solutions in the corresponding $\mathbb{C}P^{N -1}$ model. We develop a convenient description by grid diagrams which are polytopes determined by mass parameters of the model. To illustrate the validity of our method, we work out non-planar domain wall networks for lower $N$ in $3+1$ dimensions. In general, the networks can have compact vacuum bubbles, which are finite vacuum regions surrounded by domain walls, when the polytopes of the grid diagrams have inner vertices, and the size of bubbles can be controlled by moduli parameters. We also construct domain wall networks with bubbles in the shapes of the Platonic, Archimedean, Catalan, and Kepler-Poinsot solids.

Fractional and Integer Vortex Dynamics in Strongly Coupled Two-component Bose-Einstein Condensates from AdS/CFT Correspondence

In order to study the rotating strongly coupled Bose-Einstein condensations(BEC), a holographic model defined in an AdS black hole that duals to a coupled two-component condensations in global $U(1)$ symmetry broken phase with intercomponent coupling $η$ and internal coherent coupling $ε$ is proposed. By solving the dynamics of the model, we study the process of formation and also the crossover from fractional to integer vortex phases. With changing only $η$ from zero to a finite value, fractional vortex lattices undergo a transition from hexagon to square lattice and finally to vortex sheets. By continuing to turn on $ε$, we find that two fractional vortices in different components constitute dimers, and when $η$ transcend a critical value, multi-dimer like hexamer or tetramer made up of two and three dimers appear. As $ε$ keeps increasing, some dimers rotate to adjust themselves and then constitute the lattice of integer vortices. Under an initial conditions similar to an spinor BEC vortices dynamics experiment, the appearance of disordered turbulence is found in the process of fractional vortex generation, which matches the experimental observation. While in the formation process of integer vortices, the appearance of grooves is predicted.

Higher-form symmetries and 3-group in axion electrodynamics

We study higher-form symmetries in a low-energy effective theory of a massless axion coupled with a photon in $(3+1)$ dimensions. It is shown that the higher-form symmetries of this system are accompanied by a semistrict 3-group (2-crossed module) structure, which can be found by the correlation functions of symmetry generators of the higher-form symmetries. We argue that the Witten effect and anomalous Hall effect in the axion electrodynamics can be described in terms of 3-group transformations.

Lattice ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ model with ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary condition: bions, adiabatic continuity and pseudo-entropy

We investigate the lattice ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ sigma model on $S_{s}^{1}$(large) $\times$ $S_τ^{1}$(small) with the ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetric twisted boundary condition, where a sufficiently large ratio of the circumferences ($L_{s}\gg L_τ$) is taken to approximate ${\mathbb R} \times S^1$. We find that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop, which is an order parameter of the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ symmetry, remains consistent with zero ($|\langle P\rangle|\sim 0$) from small to relatively large inverse coupling $β$ (from large to small $L_τ$). As $β$ increases, the distribution of the Polyakov loop on the complex plane, which concentrates around the origin for small $β$, isotropically spreads and forms a regular $N$-sided-polygon shape (e.g. pentagon for $N=5$), leading to $|\langle P\rangle| \sim 0$. By investigating the dependence of the Polyakov loop on $S_{s}^{1}$ direction, we also verify the existence of fractional instantons and bions, which cause tunneling transition between the classical $N$ vacua and stabilize the ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetry. Even for quite high $β$, we find that a regular-polygon shape of the Polyakov-loop distribution, even if it is broken, tends to be restored and $|\langle P\rangle|$ gets smaller as the number of samples increases. To discuss the adiabatic continuity of the vacuum structure from another viewpoint, we calculate the $β$ dependence of ``pseudo-entropy" density $\propto\langle T_{xx}-T_{ττ}\rangle$. The result is consistent with the absence of a phase transition between large and small $β$ regions.

Linked vortices as baryons in the miscible BEC-Skyrme model

We introduce a variation of the Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC)-Skyrme model, with an altered potential for miscible BECs that gives rise to two physical vortex strings. In the ground state of each topological sector, the vortices are linked exactly $B$ times, due to a recently formulated theorem, with $B$ being the baryon number of the solution. The model also possesses metastable states, where the vortices are degenerate and do not lend the interpretation of the baryon number as the linking number of the vortices.

Linking number of vortices as baryon number

We show that the topological degree of a Skyrmion field is the same as the Hopf charge of the field under the Hopf map and thus equals the linking number of the preimages of two points on the 2-sphere under the Hopf map. We further interpret two particular points on the 2-sphere as vortex zeros and the linking of these zero lines follows from the latter theorem. Finally we conjecture that the topological degree of the Skyrmion can be interpreted as the product of winding numbers of vortices corresponding to the zero lines, summing over clusters of vortices.

Topological defects at the boundary of neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids in neutron stars

We study surface effects of neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids in neutron stars. $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids are in uniaxial nematic (UN), D$_{2}$ biaxial nematic (BN), or D$_{4}$ BN phase, depending on the strength of magnetic fields from small to large. We suppose a neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid in a ball with a spherical boundary. Adopting a suitable boundary condition for $^{3}P_{2}$ condensates, we solve the Ginzburg-Landau equation to find several surface properties for the neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid. First, the phase on the surface can be different from that of the bulk, and symmetry restoration or breaking occurs in general on the surface. Second, the distribution of the surface energy density has an anisotropy depending on the polar angle in the sphere, which may lead to the deformation of the geometrical shape of the surface. Third, the order parameter manifold induced on the surface, which is described by two-dimensional vector fields induced on the surface from the condensates, allows topological defects (vortices) on the surface, and there must exist such defects even in the ground state thanks to the Poincaré-Hopf theorem: although the numbers of the vortices and antivortices depend on the bulk phases, the difference between them is topologically invariant (the Euler number $χ=2$) irrespective of the bulk phases. These vortices, which are not extended to the bulk, are called boojums in the context of liquid crystals and helium-3 superfluids. The surface properties of the neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid found in this paper may provide us useful information to study neutron stars.

Topological Nambu monopole in two Higgs doublet models

We show that a topological Nambu monopole exists as a regular solution for a large range of parameters in two Higgs doublet models, contrary to the standard model admitting only non-topological Nambu monopoles. We analyze a Higgs potential with a global $U(1)$ symmetry and a discrete symmetry $\mathbb{Z}_2$. The monopole is attached by two topological $Z$ strings ($Z$ flux tubes) from both sides. Despite of a trivial second homotopy group, the discrete symmetry $\mathbb{Z}_2$ together with a non-trivial first homotopy group for $Z$ strings topologically ensures the topological stability. After analytically constructing an asymptotic form of such a configuration, we explicitly construct a solution of the equation of motion based on a 3D numerical simulation, in which magnetic fluxes spherically emanating from the monopole at large distances are deformed in the vicinity of the monopole. Since the monopoles are expected to be abundant in the present universe, they might be observed in the current monopole searches.

Vortex confinement transitions in the modified Goldstone model

The modified XY model is a variation of the XY model extended by a half periodic term, exhibiting a rich phase structure. As the Goldstone model, also known as the linear O(2) model, can be obtained as a continuum and regular model for the XY model, we define the modified Goldstone model as that of the modified XY model. We construct a vortex, a soliton (domain wall), and a molecule of two half-quantized vortices connected by a soliton as regular solutions of this model. Then we investigate its phase structure in two Euclidean dimensions via the functional renormalization group formalism and full numerical simulations. We argue that the field dependence of the wave function renormalization factor plays a crucial role in the existence of the line of fixed points describing the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, which can ultimately terminate not only at one but at two end points in the modified model. This structure confirms that a two-step phase transition of the BKT and Ising types can occur in the system. We compare our renormalization group results with full numerical simulations, which also reveal that the phase transitions show a richer scenario than expected.

$\mathbb{Z}_n$ modified XY and Goldstone models and vortex confinement transition

The modified XY model is a modification of the XY model by addition of a half-periodic term. The modified Goldstone model is a regular and continuum version of the modified XY model. The former admits a vortex molecule, that is, two half-quantized vortices connected by a domain wall, as a regular topological soliton solution to the equation of motion while the latter admits it as a singular configuration. Here we define the ${\mathbb Z}_n$ modified XY and Goldstone models as the $n=2$ case to be the modified XY and Goldstone models, respectively. We exhaust all stable and metastalble vortex solutions for $n=2,3$ and find a vortex confinement transition from an integer vortex to a vortex molecule of $n$ $1/n$-quantized vortices, depending on the ratio between the term of the XY model and the modified term. We find for the case of $n=3$, a rod-shaped molecule is the most stable while a Y-shaped molecule is metastable. We also construct some solutions for the case of $n=4$.The vortex confinement transition can be understood in terms of the ${\mathbb C}/{\mathbb Z}_n$ orbifold geometry.

Aharonov-Bohm defects

We discuss what happens when a field receiving an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase develops a vacuum expectation value (VEV), with an example of an Alice string in a $U(1) \times SU(2)$ gauge theory coupled with complex triplet scalar fields. We introduce scalar fields belonging to the doublet representation of $SU(2)$, charged or chargeless under the $U(1)$ gauge symmetry, that receives an AB phase around the Alice string. When the doublet develops a VEV, the Alice string turns to a global string in the absence of the interaction depending on the relative phase between the doublet and triplet, while, in the presence of such an interaction, the Alice string is confined by a soliton or domain wall and therefore the spontaneous breaking of a spatial rotation around the string is accompanied. We call such an object induced by an AB phase as an ``AB defect'', and argue that such a phenomenon is ubiquitously appearing in various systems.

Collision dynamics and reactions of fractional vortex molecules in coherently coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Coherently coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) exhibit vortex confinement resembling quark confinement in Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD). Fractionally quantized vortices winding only in one of two components are attached by solitons, and they cannot stably exist alone. Possible stable states are "hadrons" either of mesonic type, i.e., molecules made of a vortex and anti-vortex in the same component connected by a soliton, or of baryonic type, i.e., molecules made of two vortices winding in two different components connected by a soliton. Mesonic molecules move straight with a constant velocity while baryonic molecules rotate. We numerically simulate collision dynamics of mesonic and baryonic molecules and find that the molecules swap a partner in collisions in general like chemical and nuclear reactions, summarize all collisions as vortex reactions, and describe those by Feynman diagrams. We find a selection rule for final states after collisions of vortex molecules, analogous to that for collisions of hadrons in QCD.

Effects of strong magnetic fields on neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluidity with spin-orbit interactions

We discuss neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ phases in the core of neutron stars in strong magnetic field (magnetars). The neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ pairing provides a wide variety of condensates, such as the uniaxial nematic and (D$_{2}$ and D$_{4}$) biaxial nematic, with different symmetries stemming from the combinations of spin and momentum. Based on the spin-orbital angular momentum coupling and the spin-magnetic field coupling of the neutrons, we derive the Ginzburg-Landau equation containing higher order terms of the magnetic field. We investigate the phase diagram of the neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluidity, and find that the D$_{2}$ biaxial nematic phase is extended by the higher order terms of the magnetic field. We also discuss the thermodynamic properties, the heat capacity and the spin susceptibility.

Instantons in Chiral Magnets

We exhaustively construct instanton solutions and elucidate their properties in one-dimensional anti-ferromagnetic chiral magnets based on the $O(3)$ nonlinear sigma model description of spin chains with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. By introducing an easy-axis potential and a staggered magnetic field, we obtain a phase diagram consisting of ground-state phases with two points (or one point) in the easy-axis dominant cases, a helical modulation at a fixed latitude of the sphere, and a tricritical point allowing helical modulations at an arbitrary latitude. We find that instantons (or skyrmions in two-dimensional Euclidean space) appear as composite solitons in different fashions in these phases: temporal domain walls or wall-antiwall pairs (bions) in the easy-axis dominant cases, dislocations (or phase slips) with fractional instanton numbers in the helical state, and isolated instantons and calorons living on the top of the helical modulation at the tricritical point. We also show that the models with DM interaction and an easy-plane potential can be mapped into those without them, providing a useful tool to investigate the model with the DM interaction.

Lattice study on the twisted ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ models on ${\mathbb R}\times S^{1}$

We report the results of the lattice simulation of the ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ sigma model on $S_{s}^{1}$(large) $\times$ $S_τ^{1}$(small). We take a sufficiently large ratio of the circumferences to approximate the model on ${\mathbb R} \times S^1$. For periodic boundary condition imposed in the $S_τ^{1}$ direction, we show that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop undergoes a deconfinement crossover as the compactified circumference is decreased, where the peak of the associated susceptibility gets sharper for larger $N$. For ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary condition, we find that, even at relatively high $β$ (small circumference), the regular $N$-sided polygon-shaped distributions of Polyakov loop leads to small expectation values of Polyakov loop, which implies unbroken ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetry if sufficient statistics and large volumes are adopted. We also argue the existence of fractional instantons and bions by investigating the dependence of the Polyakov loop on $S_{s}^{1}$ direction, which causes transition between ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ vacua.

Note on a solution to domain wall problem with the Lazarides-Shafi mechanism in axion dark matter models

Axion is a promising candidate of dark matter. After the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking, axion strings are formed and attached by domain walls when the temperature of the universe becomes comparable to the QCD scale. Such objects can cause cosmological disasters if they are long-lived. As a solution for it, the Lazarides-Shafi mechanism is often discussed through introduction of a new non-Abelian (gauge) symmetry. We study this mechanism in detail and show configuration of strings and walls. Even if Abelian axion strings with a domain wall number greater than one are formed in the early universe, each of them is split into multiple Alice axion strings due to a repulsive force between the Alice strings even without domain wall. When domain walls are formed as the universe cools down, a single Alice string can be attached by a single wall because a vacuum is connected by a non-Abelian rotation without changing energy. Even if an Abelian axion string attached by domain walls are created due to the Kibble Zurek mechanism at the chiral phase transition, such strings are also similarly split into multiple Alice strings attached by walls in the presence of the domain wall tension. Such walls do not form stable networks since they collapse by the tension of the walls, emitting axions.

Massive Nambu-Goldstone Fermions and Bosons for Non-relativistic Superconformal Symmetry: Jackiw-Pi Vortices in a Trap

We discuss a supersymmetric extension of a non-relativistic Chern-Simons matter theory, known as the SUSY Jackiw-Pi model, in a harmonic trap. We show that the non-relativistic version of the superconformal symmetry, called the super-Schrödinger symmetry, is not spoiled by an external field including the harmonic potential. It survives as a modified symmetry whose generators have explicit time dependences determined by the strength of the trap, the rotation velocity of the system and the fermion number chemical potential. We construct 1/3 BPS states of trapped Jackiw-Pi vortices preserving a part of the modified superconformal symmetry and discuss fluctuations around static BPS configurations. In addition to the bosonic massive Nambu-Goldstone modes, we find that there exist massive Nambu-Goldstone fermions associated with broken modified super-Schrödinger symmetry generators. Furthermore, we find that eigenmodes form supermultiplets of a modified supersymmetry preserved by the static BPS backgrounds. As a consequence of the modified supersymmetry, infinite towers of explicit spectra can be found for eigenmodes correspond- ing to bosonic and fermionic lowest Landau levels.

A supersymmetric Skyrme model

Construction of a supersymmetric extension of the Skyrme term was a long-standing problem because of the auxiliary field problem; that is, the auxiliary field may propagate and cannot be eliminated, and the problem of having fourth-order time derivative terms. In this paper, we construct for the first time a supersymmetric extension of the Skyrme term in four spacetime dimensions, in the manifestly supersymmetric superfield formalism that does not suffer from the auxiliary field problem. Chiral symmetry breaking in supersymmetric theories results not only in Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons (pions) but also in the same number of quasi-NG bosons so that the low-energy theory is described by an SL(N,C)-valued matrix field instead of SU(N) for NG bosons. The solution of auxiliary fields is trivial on the canonical branch of the auxiliary field equation, in which case our model results in a fourth-order derivative term that is not the Skyrme term. For the case of SL(2,C), we find explicitly a nontrivial solution to the algebraic auxiliary field equations that we call a non-canonical branch, which when substituted back into the Lagrangian gives a Skyrme-like model. If we restrict to a submanifold, where quasi-NG bosons are turned off, which is tantamount to restricting the Skyrme field to SU(2), then the fourth-order derivative term reduces exactly to the standard Skyrme term. Our model is the first example of a nontrivial auxiliary field solution in a multi-component model.

BPS pion domain walls in the supersymmetric chiral Lagrangian

We construct exact solutions of BPS pion domain walls in the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric SU(N) chiral Lagrangian with pion masses introduced via linear and quadratic superpotentials. The model admits N discrete vacua in the center of SU(N) for the linear superpotential. In addition to the latter, new vacua appear for the quadratic superpotential. We find that the domain wall solutions of pions (Nambu-Goldstone bosons) that interpolate between a pair of (pion) vacua preserve half of supersymmetry. Contrary to our expectations, we have not been able to find domain walls involving the quasi-Nambu-Goldstone bosons present in the theory, which in turn has the consequence that not all vacua of the theory are connected by a BPS domain wall solution.

Coupling between Majorana fermions and Nambu-Goldstone bosons inside a non-Abelian vortex in dense QCD

Quark matter at high density may exhibit color superconductivity. As magnetic flux tubes in metallic superconductors, color magnetic flux tubes as non-Abelian vortices appear in the color-flavor locked phase of high density QCD. ${\mathbb C}P^2$ Nambu-Goldstone bosons and Majorana fermions belonging to the triplet representation are known to be localized around a non-Abelian vortex. In this paper, we determine the coupling of these bosonic and fermionic modes by using the nonlinear realization method.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states in a superconducting ring with magnetic fields: Phase diagram and the first-order phase transitions

We find the angular Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states (or the twisted kink crystals) in which a phase and an amplitude of a pair potential modulate simultaneously in a quasi-onedimensional superconducting ring with a static Zeeman magnetic field applied on the ring and static Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux penetrating the ring. The superconducting ring with magnetic flux produces a persistent current, whereas the Zeeman split of Fermi energy results in the spatial modulation of the pair potential. We show that these two magnetic fields stabilize the FFLO phase in a large parameter region of the magnetic fields. We further draw the phase diagram with the two kinds of first-order phase transitions; one corresponds to phase slips separating the Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux, and the other separates the number of peaks of the pair amplitude for the Zeeman magnetic field.

Ghostbusters in higher derivative supersymmetric theories: who is afraid of propagating auxiliary fields?

We present for the first time a ghost-free higher-derivative chiral model with a propagating auxiliary F-term field (highest component of the chiral multiplet). We obtain this model by removing a ghost in a higher derivative chiral model, with Higgsing it in terms of an auxiliary vector superfield. Depending on the sign of the quadratic derivative term of the chiral superfield, the model contains two ghost free branches of the parameter regions. We find that supersymmetry is spontaneously broken in one branch while it is preserved in the other branch. As a consequence of dynamical F-term field, a conserved U(1) charge corresponding to the number density of $F$ appears, which can be regarded as a generalization of the R-symmetry.

Half-quantized Non-Abelian Vortices in Neutron $^3P_2$ Superfluids inside Magnetars

We point out that half-quantized non-Abelian vortices exist as the minimum energy states in rotating neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids in the inner cores of magnetars with magnetic field greater than $3 \times 10^{15}$ Gauss, while they do not in ordinary neutron stars with smaller magnetic fields. One integer vortex is split into two half-quantized vortices. The number of vortices is about $10^{19}$ and they are separated at about $μ$m in a vortex lattice for typical parameters, while the vortex core size is about 10-100 fm. They are non-Abelian vortices characterized by non-Abelian first homotopy group, and consequently when two vortices corresponding to non-commutative elements collide, a rung vortex must be created between them, implying the formation of an entangled vortex network inside the cores of magnetars. We find the spontaneous magnetization in the vortex core showing anti-ferromagnetism whose typical magnitude is about $10^{8-9}$ Gauss that is ten times larger than that of integer vortices, when external magnetic fields are present along the vortex line.

The domain wall model we are interested in involves two scalar fields and a potential term built from an asymmetric double well and (double) sine-Gordon potential together with an interaction term. Depending on the initial kink setup and impact velocities, the model allows for a wide range of scattering behaviours. Kinks can repel each other, annihilate, form true or false domain walls and reflect off each other.

Modifying the pion mass in the loosely bound Skyrme model

We study the loosely bound Skyrme model with the addition of two different pion mass terms; this is the most general potential of polynomial form up to second order in the trace of the Skyrme field. The two pion mass terms are called the standard pion mass term and the modified pion mass term. We find that the binding energies are not reduced by the introduction of the modified pion mass, but it is analogous to the standard pion mass term with a decrease in the value of the mass parameter of the loosely bound potential (for large values of the latter parameter). We find by increasing the overall pion mass that we can reduce the classical binding energy of the 4-Skyrmion to the 2.7% level and the total binding energy including the contribution from spin/isospin quantization is reduced to the 5.8% level.

Non-BPS exact solutions and their relation to bions in ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ models

We investigate non-BPS exact solutions in ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ sigma models on ${\mathbb R}^1 \times S^{1}$ with twisted boundary conditions, by using the Din-Zakrzewski projection method. We focus on the relation of the non-BPS solutions to the ansatz of multi-instanton (bion) configurations and discuss their significance in the context of the resurgence theory. We find that the transition between seemingly distinct configurations of multi-instantons occur as moduli changes in the non-BPS solutions, and the simplest non-BPS exact solution corresponds to multi-bion configurations with fully-compressed double fractional instantons in the middle. It indicates that the non-BPS solutions make small but nonzero contribution to the resurgent trans-series as special cases of the multi-bion configurations. We observe a generic pattern of transitions between distinct multi-bion configurations (flipping partners), leading to the three essential properties of the non-BPS exact solution: (i) opposite sign for terms corresponding to the left and right infinities, (ii) symmetric location of fractional instantons, and (iii) the transition between distinct bion configurations. By studying the balance of forces, we show that the relative phases between the instanton constituents play decisive roles in stability and instability of the muli-instanton configurations. We discuss local and global instabilities of the solutions such as negative modes and the flow to the other saddle points, by considering the deformations of the non-BPS exact solutions within our multi-instanton ansatz. We also briefly discuss some classes of the non-BPS exact solutions in Grassmann sigma models.

Non-perturbative Contributions from Complexified Solutions in $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ Models

We discuss the non-perturbative contributions from real and complex saddle point solutions in the $\mathbb{C}P^1$ quantum mechanics with fermionic degrees of freedom, using the Lefschetz thimble formalism beyond the gaussian approximation. We find bion solutions, which correspond to (complexified) instanton-antiinstanton configurations stabilized in the presence of the fermionic degrees of freedom. By computing the one-loop determinants in the bion backgrounds, we obtain the leading order contributions from both the real and complex bion solutions. To incorporate quasi zero modes which become nearly massless in a weak coupling limit, we regard the bion solutions as well-separated instanton-antiinstanton configurations and calculate a complexified quasi moduli integral based on the Lefschetz thimble formalism. The non-perturbative contributions from the real and complex bions are shown to cancel out in the supersymmetric case and give an (expected) ambiguity in the non-supersymmetric case, which plays a vital role in the resurgent trans-series. For nearly supersymmetric situation, evaluation of the Lefschetz thimble gives results in precise agreement with those of the direct evaluation of the Schrödinger equation. We also perform the same analysis for the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics and point out some important differences showing that the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics does not correctly describe the 1d limit of the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ field theory of $\mathbb{R} \times S^1$.

Semilocal Fractional Instantons

We find semi-local fractional instantons of codimension four in Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories coupled with scalar fields and the corresponding ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ and Grassmann sigma models at strong gauge coupling. They are 1/4 BPS states in supersymmetric theories with eight supercharges, carry fractional (half) instanton charges characterized by the fourth homotopy group $π_4 (G/H)$, and have divergent energy in infinite spaces. We construct exact solutions for the sigma models and numerical solutions for the gauge theories. Small instanton singularity in sigma models is resolved at finite gauge coupling (for the Abelian gauge theory). Instantons in Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories have negative and positive instantons charges, respectively, which are related by the Seiberg-like duality that changes the sign of the instanton charge.

Skyrmions confined as beads on a vortex ring

A very simple, quadratic potential is used to construct vortex strings in a generalized Skyrme model and an additional quadratic potential is used to embed sine-Gordon-type halfkinks onto the string worldline, yielding half-Skyrmions on a string. The strings are furthermore compactified onto a circle and the halfkinks are forced to appear in pairs; in particular 2B halfkinks (half-Skyrmions) will appear as beads on a ring with B being the number of times the host vortex is twisted and also the baryon number (Skyrmion number) from the bulk point of view. Finally, we construct an effective field theory on the torus, describing the kinks living on the vortex rings.

Stabilizing semilocal strings by polarization

Semilocal strings are vortices in the extended Abelian-Higgs model with two complex Higgs scalar fields among which a global $SU(2)$ symmetry acts. They are known to be stable (unstable against expansion) in type-I (II) superconductors, in which gauge field is heavier (lighter) than the Higgs scalar field. In this paper, we find that vortices can be stabilized in the whole parameter region including the type-II region by adding a potential term breaking the $SU(2)$ symmetry. We construct numerical solutions in various parameters and determine the vortex phase diagram consisting of six phases. In two phases, a vortex is polarized, that is, split into two half-quantized vortices with a certain distance, to form a vortex molecule, while in the rests a vortex is identical to the conventional Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortex.

Stable core symmetries and confined textures for a vortex line in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

We show how a singly quantized vortex can exhibit energetically stable defect cores with different symmetries in an atomic spin-1 polar Bose-Einstein condensate, and how a stable topologically nontrivial Skyrmion texture of lower dimensionality can be confined inside the core. The core isotropy and the stability of the confined texture are sensitive to Zeeman level shifts. The observed structures have analogies, respectively, in pressure-dependent symmetries of superfluid liquid He-3 vortices and in the models of superconducting cosmic strings.

2d Partition Function in Omega-background and Vortex/Instanton Correspondence

We derive the exact vortex partition function in 2d $\mathcal{N}$ = (2,2) gauge theory on the Omega-background, applying the localization scheme in the Higgs phase. We show that the partition function at a finite Omega-deformation parameter $ε$ satisfies a system of differential equations, which can be interpreted as a quantized version of the twisted F-term equations characterizing the SUSY vacua. Using the differential equations derived in this paper, we show the correspondence between the partition function of the two-dimensional vortex string worldsheet theory and the Nekrasov partition function at the root of Higgs branch of the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 theory with two Omega-deformation parameters $(ε_1,ε_2)$.

Baryonic torii: Toroidal baryons in a generalized Skyrme model

We study a Skyrme-type model with a potential term motivated by Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), which we call the BEC Skyrme model. We consider two flavors of the model, the first is the Skyrme model and the second has a sixth-order derivative term instead of the Skyrme term; both with the added BEC-motivated potential. The model contains toroidally shaped Skyrmions and they are characterized by two integers P and Q, representing the winding numbers of two complex scalar fields along the toroidal and poloidal cycles of the torus, respectively. The baryon number is B=PQ. We find stable Skyrmion solutions for P=1,2,3,4,5 with Q=1, while for P=6 and Q=1 it is only metastable. We further find that configurations with higher Q>1 are all unstable and split into Q configurations with Q=1. Finally we discover a phase transition, possibly of first order, in the mass parameter of the potential under study.

Classifying BPS States in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories Coupled to Higher Derivative Chiral Models

We study N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories coupled with higher derivative chiral models in four dimensions in the off-shell superfield formalism. We solve the equation of motion for the auxiliary fields and find two distinct on-shell structures of the Lagrangian that we call the canonical and non-canonical branches characterized by zero and non-zero auxiliary fields, respectively. We classify BPS states of the models in Minkowski and Euclidean spaces. In Minkowski space, we find Abelian and non-Abelian vortices, vortex-lumps (or gauged lumps with fractional lump charges) as 1/2 BPS states in the canonical branch and higher derivative generalization of vortices and vortex-(BPS)baby Skyrmions (or gauged BPS baby Skyrmions with fractional baby Skyrme charges) as 1/4 BPS states in the non-canonical branch. In four-dimensional Euclidean space, we find Yang-Mills instantons trapped inside a non-Abelian vortex, intersecting vortices, intersecting vortex-(BPS)baby Skyrmions as 1/4 BPS states in the canonical branch but no BPS states in the non-canonical branch other than those in the Minkowski space.

Counting rule of Nambu-Goldstone modes for internal and spacetime symmetries: Bogoliubov theory approach

When continuous symmetry is spontaneously broken, there appear Nambu-Goldstone modes (NGMs) with linear and quadratic dispersion relations, which are called type-I and type-II, respectively. We propose a framework to count these modes including the coefficients of the dispersion relations with applying the standard Gross-Pitaevskii-Bogoliubov theory. Our method is mainly based on (i) zero-mode solutions of the Bogoliubov equation originated from spontaneous symmetry breaking and (ii) their generalized orthogonal relations, which naturally arises from well-known Bogoliubov transformations and is referred to as "$σ$-orthogonality" in this paper. Unlike previous works, our framework is applicable without any modification to the cases where there are additional zero modes, which do not have a symmetry origin, such as quasi-NGMs, and/or where spacetime symmetry is spontaneously broken in the presence of a topological soliton or a vortex. As a by-product of the formulation, we also give a compact summary for mathematics of bosonic Bogoliubov equations and Bogoliubov transformations, which becomes a foundation for any problem of Bogoliubov quasiparticles. The general results are illustrated by various examples in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). In particular, the result on the spin-3 BECs includes new findings such as a type-I-type-II transition and an increase of the type-II dispersion coefficient caused by a linearly-independent pair of zero modes.

Fractional instantons and bions in the O(N) model with twisted boundary conditions

Recently, multiple fractional instanton configurations with zero instanton charge, called bions, have been revealed to play important roles in quantum field theories on compactified spacetime. In two dimensions, fractional instantons and bions have been extensively studied in the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model and the Grassmann sigma model on ${\mathbb R}^1 \times S^1$ with the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ symmetric twisted boundary condition. Fractional instantons in these models are domain walls with a localized $U(1)$ modulus twisted half along their world volume. In this paper, we classify fractional instantons and bions in the $O(N)$ nonlinear sigma model on ${\mathbb R}^{N-2} \times S^1$ with more general twisted boundary conditions in which arbitrary number of fields change sign. We find that fractional instantons have more general composite structures, that is, a global vortex with an Ising spin (or a half-lump vortex), a half sine-Gordon kink on a domain wall, or a half lump on a "space-filling brane" in the $O(3)$ model (${\mathbb C}P^1$ model) on ${\mathbb R}^{1} \times S^1$, and a global monopole with an Ising spin (or a half-Skyrmion monopole), a half sine-Gordon kink on a global vortex, a half lump on a domain wall, or a half Skyrmion on a "space-filling brane" in the $O(4)$ model (principal chiral model or Skyrme model) on ${\mathbb R}^{2} \times S^1$. We also construct bion configurations in these models.

Fractional instantons and bions in the principal chiral model on ${\mathbb R}^2\times S^1$ with twisted boundary conditions

Bions are multiple fractional instanton configurations with zero instanton charge playing important roles in quantum field theories on a compactified space with a twisted boundary condition. We classify fractional instantons and bions in the $SU(N)$ principal chiral model on ${\mathbb R}^2 \times S^1$ with twisted boundary conditions. We find that fractional instantons are global vortices wrapping around $S^1$ with their $U(1)$ moduli twisted along $S^1$, that carry $1/N$ instanton (baryon) numbers for the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ symmetric twisted boundary condition and irrational instanton numbers for generic boundary condition. We work out neutral and charged bions for the $SU(3)$ case with the ${\mathbb Z}_3$ symmetric twisted boundary condition. We also find for generic boundary conditions that only the simplest neutral bions have zero instanton charges but instanton charges are not canceled out for charged bions. A correspondence between fractional instantons and bions in the $SU(N)$ principal chiral model and those in Yang-Mills theory is given through a non-Abelian Josephson junction.

The model contains molecules of half Skyrmions, each of them is a global (anti-)monopole with baryon number 1/2. We numerically construct solutions with baryon numbers one through six, and find stable solutions which look like beads on rings. Gravitating BPS Skyrmions

The BPS Skyrme model has many exact analytic solutions in flat space. We generalize the model to a curved space or spacetime and find that the solutions can only be BPS for a constant time-time component of the metric tensor. We find exact solutions on the curved spaces: a 3-sphere and a 3-hyperboloid; and we further find an analytic gravitating Skyrmion on the 3-sphere. For the case of a nontrivial time-time component of the metric, we suggest a potential for which we find analytic solutions on anti-de Sitter and de Sitter spacetimes in the limit of no gravitational backreaction. We take the gravitational coupling into account in numerical solutions and show that they are well approximated by the analytic solutions for weak gravitational coupling.

Instantons in Lifshitz Field Theories

BPS instantons are discussed in Lifshitz-type anisotropic field theories. We consider generalizations of the sigma model/Yang-Mills instantons in renormalizable higher dimensional models with the classical Lifshitz scaling invariance. In each model, BPS instanton equation takes the form of the gradient flow equations for "the superpotential" defining "the detailed balance condition". The anisotropic Weyl rescaling and the coset space dimensional reduction are used to map rotationally symmetric instantons to vortices in two-dimensional anisotropic systems on the hyperbolic plane. As examples, we study anisotropic BPS baby Skyrmion 1+1 dimensions and BPS Skyrmion in 2+1 dimensions, for which we take Kahler 1-form and the Wess-Zumiono-Witten term as the superpotentials, respectively, and an anisotropic generalized Yang-Mills instanton in 4+1 dimensions, for which we take the Chern-Simons term as the superpotential.

Interpolating relativistic and non-relativistic Nambu-Goldstone and Higgs modes

When a continuous symmetry is spontaneously broken in non-relativistic theories, there appear Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes, whose dispersion relations are either linear (type-I) or quadratic (type-II). We give a general framework to interpolate between relativistic and non-relativistic NG modes, revealing a nature of type-I and II NG modes in non-relativistic theories. The interpolating Lagrangians have the nonlinear Lorentz invariance which reduces to the Galilei or Schrodinger invariance in the non-relativistic limit. We find that type-I and type-II NG modes in the interpolating region are accompanied with a Higgs mode and a chiral NG partner, respectively, both of which are gapful. In the ultra-relativistic limit, a set of a type-I NG mode and its Higgs partner remains, while a set of type-II NG mode and gapful NG partner turns to a set of two type-I NG modes. In the non-relativistic limit, the both types of accompanied gapful modes become infinitely massive, disappearing from the spectrum. The examples contain a phonon in Bose-Einstein condensates, a magnon in ferromagnets, and a Kelvon and dilaton-magnon localized around a skyrmion line in ferromagnets.

Josephson instantons and Josephson monopoles in a non-Abelian Josephson junction

Non-Abelian Josephson junction is a junction of non-Abelian color superconductors sandwiching an insulator, or non-Abelian domain wall if flexible, whose low-energy dynamics is described by a $U(N)$ principal chiral model with the conventional pion mass. A non-Abelian Josephson vortex is a non-Abelian vortex (color magnetic flux tube) residing inside the junction, that is described as a non-Abelian sine-Gordon soliton. In this paper, we propose Josephson instantons and Josephson monopoles, that is, Yang-Mills instantons and monopoles inside a non-Abelian Josephson junction, respectively, and show that they are described as $SU(N)$ Skyrmions and $U(1)^{N-1}$ vortices in the $U(N)$ principal chiral model without and with a twisted mass term, respectively. Instantons with a twisted boundary condition are reduced (or T-dual) to monopoles, implying that ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ lumps are T-dual to ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ kinks inside a vortex. Here we find $SU(N)$ Skyrmions are T-dual to $U(1)^{N-1}$ vortices inside a wall. Our configurations suggest a yet another duality between ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ lumps and $SU(N)$ Skyrmions as well as that between ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ kinks and $U(1)^{N-1}$ vortices, viewed from different host solitons. They also suggest a duality between fractional instantons and bions in the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model and those in the $SU(N)$ principal chiral model.

Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with (topological) defects such as vortices and domain walls in (super)fluids are known to possess quadratic/non-integer dispersion relations in finite/infinite-size systems. Here, we report interpolating formulas connecting the dispersion relations in finite- and infinite-size systems for Kelvin modes along a quantum vortex and ripplons on a domain wall in superfluids. Our method can provide not only the dispersion relations but also the explicit forms of quasiparticle wavefunctions $(u,v)$. We find a complete agreement between the analytical formulas and numerical simulations. All these formulas are derived in a fully analytical way, and hence not empirical ones. We also discuss common structures in the derivation of these formulas and speculate on the general procedure.

Non-Abelian Sine-Gordon Solitons

We point out that non-Abelian sine-Gordon solitons stably exist in the $U(N)$ chiral Lagrangian. They also exist in a $U(N)$ gauge theory with two $N$ by $N$ complex scalar fields coupled to each other. One non-Abelian sine-Gordon soliton can terminate on one non-Abelian global vortex. They are relevant in chiral Lagrangian of QCD or in color-flavor locked phase of high density QCD, where the anomaly is suppressed at asymptotically high temperature or density, respectively.

Non-Abelian Sine-Gordon Solitons: Correspondence between $SU(N)$ Skyrmions and ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ Lumps

Topologically stable non-Abelian sine-Gordon solitons have been found recently in the $U(N)$ chiral Lagrangian and a $U(N)$ gauge theory with two $N$ by $N$ complex scalar fields coupled to each other. We construct the effective theory on a non-Abelian sine-Gordon soliton that is a nonlinear sigma model with the target space ${\mathbb R} \times {\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$. We then show that ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ lumps on it represent $SU(N)$ Skyrmions in the bulk point of view, providing a physical realization of the rational map Ansatz for Skyrmions of the translational (Donaldson) type. We find therefore that Skyrmions can exist stably without the Skyrme term.

Quasi-Nambu-Goldstone modes in nonrelativistic systems

When a continuous symmetry is spontaneously broken in nonrelativistic systems, there appear either type-I or type-II Nambu-Goldstone modes (NGMs) with linear or quadratic dispersion relation, respectively. When equation of motion or the potential term has an enhanced symmetry larger than that of Lagrangian or Hamiltonian, there can appear quasi-NGMs if it is spontaneously broken. We construct a theory to count the numbers of type-I and type-II quasi-NGMs and NGMs, when the potential term has a symmetry of a non-compact group. We show that the counting rule based on the Watanabe-Brauner matrix is valid only in the absence of quasi-NGMs because of non-hermitian generators, while that based on the Gram matrix [DT & MN, arXiv:1404.7696, Ann. Phys. 354, 101 (2015)] is still valid in the presence of quasi-NGMs. We show that there exist two types of type-II gapless modes, a genuine NGM generated by two conventional zero modes (ZMs) originated from the Lagrangian symmetry, and quasi-NGM generated by a coupling of one conventional ZMand one quasi-ZM, which is originated from the enhanced symmetry, or two quasi-ZMs. We find that, depending on the moduli, some NGMs can change to quasi-NGMs and vice versa with preserving the total number of gapless modes. The dispersion relations are systematically calculated by a perturbation theory. The general result is illustrated by the complex linear $O(N)$ model, containing the two types of type-II gapless modes and exhibiting the change between NGMs and quasi-NGMs.

Resurgence in sine-Gordon quantum mechanics: Exact agreement between multi-instantons and uniform WKB

We compute multi-instanton amplitudes in the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics (periodic cosine potential) by integrating out quasi-moduli parameters corresponding to separations of instantons and anti-instantons. We propose an extension of Bogomolnyi--Zinn-Justin prescription for multi-instanton configurations and an appropriate subtraction scheme. We obtain the multi-instanton contributions to the energy eigenvalue of the lowest band at the zeroth order of the coupling constant. For the configurations with only instantons (anti-instantons), we obtain unambiguous results. For those with both instantons and anti-instantons, we obtain results with imaginary parts, which depend on the path of analytic continuation. We show that the imaginary parts of the multi-instanton amplitudes precisely cancel the imaginary parts of the Borel resummation of the perturbation series, and verify that our results completely agree with those based on the uniform-WKB calculations, thus confirming the resurgence : divergent perturbation series combined with the nonperturbative multi-instanton contributions conspire to give unambiguous results. We also study the neutral bion contributions in the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model on ${\mathbb R}^1\times S^{1}$ with a small circumference, taking account of the relative phase moduli between the fractional instanton and anti-instanton. We find that the sign of the interaction potential depends on the relative phase moduli, and that both the real and imaginary parts resulting from quasi-moduli integral of the neutral bion get quantitative corrections compared to the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics.

Short range inter-vortex interaction and interacting dynamics of half-quantized vortices in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the interaction and dynamics of two half-quantized vortices in two-component Bose- Einstein condensates. Using the Pade approximation for the vortex core profile, we calculate the intervortex potential, whose asymptotic form for a large distance has been derived by Eto et al. [Phys. Rev. A, 83, 063603 (2011)]. Through numerical simulations of the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we reveal different kinds of dynamical trajectories of the vortices depending on the combinations of signs of circulations and the intercomponent density coupling. Under the adiabatic limit, we derive the equations of motion for the vortex coordinates, in which the motion is caused by the balance between Magnus force and the intervortex forces. The initial velocity of the vortex motion can be explained quantitatively by this point vortex approximation, but under- standing the long-time behavior of the dynamics needs more consideration beyond our model.

Baryonic sphere: a spherical domain wall carrying baryon number

We construct a spherical domain wall which has baryon charge distributed on a sphere of finite radius in a Skyrme model with a sixth order derivative term and a modified mass term. Its distribution of energy density likewise takes the form of a sphere. In order to localize the domain wall at a finite radius we need a negative coefficient in front of the Skyrme term and a positive coefficient of the sixth order derivative term to stabilize the soliton. Increasing the pion mass pronounces the shell-like structure of the configuration.

BPS States in Supersymmetric Chiral Models with Higher Derivative Terms

We study the higher derivative chiral models with four supercharges and BPS states in these models. The off-shell Lagrangian generically includes higher powers of the auxiliary fields F which causes distinct on-shell branches associated with the solutions to the auxiliary fields equation. We point out that the model admits a supersymmetric completion of arbitrary higher derivative bosonic models of a single complex scalar field and an arbitrary scalar potential can be introduced even without superpotentials. As an example, we present a supersymmetric extension of the Faddeev-Skyrme model without four time derivatives, in contrast to the previously proposed supersymmetric Faddeev-Skyrme-like model containing four time derivatives. In general, higher derivative terms together with a superpotential result in deformed scalar potentials. We find that higher derivative corrections to 1/2 BPS domain walls and 1/2 BPS lumps are exactly canceled out while the 1/4 BPS lumps (as compact baby Skyrmions) depend on a characteristic feature of the higher derivative models. We also find a new 1/4 BPS condition for domain wall junctions which generically receives higher derivative corrections.

Classifying bions in Grassmann sigma models and non-Abelian gauge theories by D-branes

We classify bions in the Grassmann $Gr_{N_{\rm F},N_{\rm C}}$ sigma model (including the ${\mathbb C}P^{N_{\rm F}-1}$ model) on ${\mathbb R}^{1}\times S^{1}$ with twisted boundary conditions. We formulate these models as $U(N_{\rm C})$ gauge theories with $N_{\rm F}$ flavors in the fundamental representations. These theories can be promoted to supersymmetric gauge theories and further can be embedded into D-brane configurations in type II superstring theories. We focus on specific configurations composed of multiple fractional instantons, termed neutral bions and charged bions, which are identified as perturbative infrared renormalons by Ünsal and his collaborators. We show that D-brane configurations as well as the moduli matrix offer a very useful tool to classify all possible bion configurations in these models. Contrary to the ${\mathbb C}P^{N_{\rm F}-1}$ model, there exist Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) fractional instantons with topological charge greater than unity (of order $N_{\rm C}$) that cannot be reduced to a composite of an instanton and fractional instantons. As a consequence, we find that the Grassmann sigma model admits neutral bions made of BPS and anti-BPS fractional instantons each of which has topological charge greater (less) than one (minus one), that are not decomposable into instanton anti-instanton and the rests. The ${\mathbb C}P^{N_{\rm F}-1}$ model is found to have no charged bions. In contrast, we find that the Grassmann sigma model admits charged bions, for which we construct exact non-BPS solutions of the field equations.

Color Magnetism in Non-Abelian Vortex Matter

We propose color magnetism as a generalization of the ordinary Heisenberg (anti-)ferro magnets on a triangular lattice. Vortex matter consisting of an Abrikosov lattice of non-Abelian vortices with color magnetic fluxes shows a color ferro or anti-ferro magnetism, depending on the interaction among the vortex sites. A prime example is a non-Abelian vortex lattice in rotating dense quark matter, showing a color ferromagnetism. We show that the low-energy effective theory for the vortex lattice system in the color ferromagnetic phase is described by a 3+1 dimensional $CP^{N-1}$ nonlinear sigma model with spatially anisotropic couplings. We identify gapless excitations independent from Tkachenko modes as color magnons, that is, Nambu-Goldstone modes propagating in the vortex lattice with an anisotropic linear dispersion relation $ω_p^2 = c_{xy}^2(p_x^2+p_y^2) + c_z^2 p_z^2$. We calculate the transition temperature between the ordered and disordered phases, and apply it to dense quark matter. We also identify the order parameter spaces for color anti-ferromagnets.

Domain Walls and Vortices in Chiral Symmetry Breaking

We study domain walls and vortices in chiral symmetry breaking in a QCD-like theory with N flavors in the chiral limit. If the axial anomaly is absent, there exist stable Abelian axial vortices winding around the spontaneously broken U(1)_A symmetry and non-Abelian axial vortices winding around both the U(1)_A and non-Abelian SU(N) chiral symmetries. In the presence of the axial anomaly term, metastable domain walls are present and Abelian axial vortices must be attached by N domain walls, forming domain wall junctions. We show that a domain wall junction decays into N non-Abelian vortices attached by domain walls, implying its metastability. We also show that domain walls decay through the quantum tunneling by creating a hole bounded by a closed non-Abelian vortex.

Higher Derivative Corrections to Manifestly Supersymmetric Nonlinear Realizations

When global symmetries are spontaneously broken in supersymmetric vacua, there appear quasi-Nambu-Goldstone (NG) fermions as superpartners of NG bosons. In addition to these, there can appear quasi-NG bosons in general. The quasi-NG bosons and fermions together with the NG bosons are organized into chiral multiplets. Kähler potentials of low-energy effective theories were constructed some years ago as supersymmetric nonlinear realizations. It is known that higher derivative terms in the superfield formalism often encounter with the auxiliary field problem; the auxiliary fields are acted by space-time derivatives and cannot be eliminated. In this paper, we construct higher derivative corrections to supersymmetric nonlinear realizations in the off-shell superfield formalism free from the auxiliary field problem. As an example, we present manifestly supersymmetric chiral Lagrangian.

Incarnations of Instantons

Yang-Mills instantons in a pure Yang-Mills theory in four Euclidean space can be promoted to particle-like topological solitons in d=4+1 dimensional space-time. When coupled to Higgs fields, they transform themselves in the Higgs phase into Skyrmions, lumps and sine-Gordon kinks, with trapped inside a non-Abelian domain wall, non-Abelian vortex and monopole string, respectively. Here, we point out that a closed monopole string, non-Abelian vortex sheet and non-Abelian domain wall in $S^1$, $S^2$ and $S^3$ shapes, respectively, are all Yang-Mills instantons if their $S^1$, $S^2$ and $S^3$ moduli, respectively, are twisted along their world-volumes.

Incarnations of Skyrmions

Skyrmions can be transformed into lumps or baby-Skyrmions by being trapped inside a domain wall. Here we find that they can also be transformed into sine-Gordon kinks when confined by vortices, resulting in confined Skyrmions. We show this both by an effective field theory approach and by direct numerical calculations. The existence of these trapped and confined Skyrmions does not rely on higher-derivative terms when the host solitons are flat or straight. We also construct a Skyrmion as a twisted vortex ring in a model with a sixth-order derivative term.

Kelvin modes as Nambu-Goldstone modes along superfluid vortices and relativistic strings: finite volume size effects

We study Kelvin modes and translational zero modes excited along a quantized vortex and relativistic global string in superfluids and a relativistic field theory, respectively, by constructing the low-energy effective theory of these modes. We find that they become exact gapless Nambu-Goldstone modes only in a system with infinite volume limit. On the other hand, in a system with the finite volume, we find an imaginary massive gap causing the tachyonic instability above some critical wavelength in the relativistic theory. We also find in the non-relativistic theory that Kelvin modes with wavelengths longer than some critical value propagate in the direction opposite to those with shorter length, contrary to conventional understanding. The number of Nambu-Goldstone modes also saturate the equality of the Nielsen-Chadha inequality for both relativistic and non-relativistic theories.

Knotted instantons from annihilations of monopole-instanton complex

Monopoles and instantons are sheets (membranes) and strings in d=5+1, respectively, and instanton strings can terminate on monopole sheets. We consider a pair of monopole and anti-monopole sheets which is unstable to decay and results in a creation of closed instanton strings. We show that when an instanton string is stretched between the monopole sheets, there remains a new topological soliton of codimension five after the pair annihilation, i.e., a twisted closed instanton string or a knotted instanton.

Neutral bions in the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model

We study classical configurations in the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model on ${\mathbb R}^{1}\times S^{1}$ with twisted boundary conditions. We focus on specific configurations composed of multiple fractionalized-instantons, termed "neutral bions", which are identified as "perturbative infrared renormalons" by Ünsal and his collaborators. For ${\mathbb Z}_N$ twisted boundary conditions, we consider an explicit ansatz corresponding to topologically trivial configurations containing one fractionalized instanton ($ν=1/N$) and one fractionalized anti-instanton ($ν=-1/N$) at large separations, and exhibit the attractive interaction between the instanton constituents and how they behave at shorter separations. We show that the bosonic interaction potential between the constituents as a function of both the separation and $N$ is consistent with the standard separated-instanton calculus even from short to large separations, which indicates that the ansatz enables us to study bions and the related physics for a wide range of separations. We also propose different bion ansatze in a certain non-${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary condition corresponding to the "split" vacuum for $N= 3$ and its extensions for $N\geq 3$. We find that the interaction potential has qualitatively the same asymptotic behavior and $N$-dependence as those of bions for ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary conditions.

Neutral bions in the CP^{N-1} model for resurgence

Classical configurations in the CP^{N-1} model on R^1 x S^1 is studied with twisted boundary conditions. Starting from fractional instantons with the Z_N twisted boundary conditions, we review briefly the relevance of our study to resurgence phenomenon in field theory. We consider primarily configurations composed of multiple fractional instantons, called "neutral bions", which are identified as "perturbative infrared renormalons". We construct an explicit ansatz corresponding to topologically trivial configurations containing one fractional instanton (nu=1/N) and one fractional anti-instanton (nu=-1/N), which is guaranteed to become a solution of field equations asymptotically for large separations. The attractive interactions between the instanton constituents from small to large separations are found to be consistent with the standard separated-instanton calculus. Our results suggest that the ansatz enables us to study bions and the related physics for a wide range of separations. Non-relativistic Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with spontaneously broken space-time and internal symmetries

We show that a momentum operator of a translational symmetry may not commute with an internal symmetry operator in the presence of a topological soliton in non-relativistic theories. As a striking consequence, there appears a coupled Nambu-Goldstone mode with a quadratic dispersion consisting of translational and internal zero modes in the vicinity of a domain wall in an O(3) sigma model, a magnetic domain wall in ferromagnets with an easy axis.

Non-relativistic Nambu-Goldstone modes propagating along a skyrmion line

We study Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes or gapless modes propagating along a skyrmion (lump) line in a relativistic and non-relativistic O(3) sigma model, the latter of which describes isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnets. We show for the non-relativistic case that there appear two coupled gapless modes with a quadratic dispersion. In addition to the well-known Kelvin mode consisting of two translational zero modes transverse to the skyrmion line, we show that the other consists of a magnon and dilaton, that is, a NG mode for a spontaneously broken internal U(1) symmetry and a quasi-NG mode for a spontaneously broken scale symmetry of the equation of motion. We find that the commutation relations of Noether charges admit a central extension between the dilatation and phase rotation, in addition to the one between two translations found recently. The counting rule is consistent with the Nielsen-Chadha and Watanabe-Brauner relations only when we take into account quasi-NG modes.

Quantum Exact Non-Abelian Vortices in Non-relativistic Theories

Non-Abelian vortices arise when a non-Abelian global symmetry is exact in the ground state but spontaneously broken in the vicinity of their cores. In this case, there appear (non-Abelian) Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes confined and propagating along the vortex. In relativistic theories, the Coleman-Mermin-Wagner theorem forbids the existence of a spontaneous symmetry breaking, or a long-range order, in 1+1 dimensions: quantum corrections restore the symmetry along the vortex and the NG modes acquire a mass gap. We show that in non-relativistic theories NG modes with quadratic dispersion relation confined on a vortex can remain gapless at quantum level. We provide a concrete and experimentally realizable example of a three-component Bose-Einstein condensate with U(1) x U(2) symmetry. We first show, at the classical level, the existence of S^3 = S^1 |x S^2 (S^1 fibered over S^2) NG modes associated to the breaking U(2) -> U(1) on vortices, where S^1 and S^2 correspond to type I and II NG modes, respectively. We then show, by using a Bethe ansatz technique, that the U(1) symmetry is restored, while the SU(2) symmery remains broken non-pertubatively at quantum level. Accordingly, the U(1) NG mode turns into a c=1 conformal field theory, the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, while the S^2 NG mode remains gapless, describing a ferromagnetic liquid. This allows the vortex to be genuinely non-Abelian at quantum level.

Vortices and Other Topological Solitons in Dense Quark Matter

In this review, we discuss various properties of topological solitons in dense QCD matter, with a particular emphasis on the CFL phase exhibiting superfluidity and superconductivity, and their phenomenological implications in terms of the effective field theories such as the Ginzburg-Landau theory, the chiral Lagrangian, or the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation. The most fundamental topological excitations are non-Abelian vortices, which are 1/3 quantized superfluid vortices and color magnetic flux tubes. They are created at a phase transition or a rotation such compact stars. The intervortex-interaction is repulsive and consequently a vortex lattice is formed. Bosonic and fermionic zero-energy modes are trapped in the vortex core and propagate along it as gapless excitations. The former consists of translational zero modes (a Kelvin mode) with a quadratic dispersion and CP(2) Nambu-Goldstone gapless modes with a linear dispersion, while the latter is the triplet Majorana fermion zero modes. The low-energy effective theory of the bosonic zero modes is a non-relativistic free complex scalar field and a CP(2) model in 1+1 dimensions. The effects of strange quark mass, electromagnetic interactions and non-perturbative quantum corrections are taken into account. Colorful boojums at the CFL interface, quantum color magnetic monopole confined by vortices, which supports the notion of quark-hadron duality, and Yang-Mills instantons inside a vortex as lumps are discussed. The interactions between a vortex and quasi-particles such as phonons, gluons, mesons, and photons are studied. A vortex lattice is shown to behave as a cosmic polarizer. Non-Abelian vortices are shown to behave as a novel kind of non-Abelian anyons. For the chiral symmetry breaking, we discuss fractional and integer axial domain walls, Abelian and non-Abelian axial vortices, axial wall-vortex composites, and Skyrmions.

Crossover between integer and fractional vortex lattices in coherently coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We study effects of the internal coherent (Rabi) coupling in vortex lattices in two-component BECs under rotation. We find how the vortex lattices without the Rabi coupling known before are connected to the Abrikosov lattice of integer vortices with increasing the Rabi coupling. We find that 1) for small Rabi couplings, fractional vortices in triangular or square lattice for small or large inter-component coupling constitute hexamers or tetramers, namely multi-dimer bound states made of six or four vortices, respectively, 2) these bound states are broken into a set of dimers at intermediate Rabi couplings, and 3) vortices change their partners in various ways depending on the inter-component coupling to organize themselves for constituting the Abrikosov lattice of integer vortices at strong Rabi couplings.

Non-Abelian Quasi-Gapless Modes Localized on Mass Vortices in Superfluid 3He-B

Kelvin waves or Kelvons have been known for a long time as gapless excitations propagating along superfluid vortices. These modes can be interpreted as the Nambu-Goldstone excitations arising from the spontaneous breaking of the translational symmetry. Recently a different type of gapless excitation localized on strings -- the so-called non-Abelian mode -- attracted much attention in high-energy physics. We discuss their relevance in condensed matter physics. Although we failed to find exactly gapless non-Abelian modes, non-Abelian rotational quasigapless excitations are argued to exist on the mass vortices in the B phase of the superfluid 3He, due to the fact that the order parameter in 3He-B is tensorial. While the U(1) rotational excitations are well established in vortices with asymmetric cores, the non-Abelian rotational excitations belonging to the same family were not considered. In the general case they are coupled with the translational modes.

Non-Abelian statistics of vortices with non-Abelian Dirac fermions

We extend our previous analysis on the exchange statistics of vortices having a single Dirac fermion trapped in each core, to the case where vortices trap two Dirac fermions with U(2) symmetry. Such a system of vortices with non-Abelian Dirac fermions appears in color superconductors at extremely high densities, and in supersymmetric QCD. We show that the exchange of two vortices having doublet Dirac fermions in each core is expressed by non-Abelian representations of a braid group, which is explicitly verified in the matrix representation of the exchange operators when the number of vortices is up to four. We find that the result contains the matrices previously obtained for the vortices with a single Dirac fermion in each core as a special case. The whole braid group does not immediately imply non-Abelian statistics of identical particles because it also contains exchanges between vortices with different numbers of Dirac fermions. However, we find that it does contain, as its subgroup, a genuine non-Abelian statistics for the exchange of the identical particles, that is, vortices with the same number of Dirac fermions. This result is surprising compared with conventional understanding because all Dirac fermions are defined locally at each vortex, unlike the case of Majorana fermions for which Dirac fermions are defined non-locally by Majorana fermions located at two spatially separated vortices.

Non-Abelian Vortices with an Aharonov-Bohm Effect

The interplay of gauge dynamics and flavor symmetries often leads to remarkably subtle phenomena in the presence of soliton configurations. Non-Abelian vortices -- vortex solutions with continuous internal orientational moduli -- provide an example. Here we study the effect of weakly gauging a U(1)_R subgroup of the flavor symmetry on such BPS vortex solutions. Our prototypical setting consists of an SU(2) x U(1) gauge theory with N_f=2 sets of fundamental scalars that break the gauge symmetry to an "electromagnetic" U(1). The weak U(1)_R gauging converts the well-known CP1 orientation modulus |B| of the non-Abelian vortex into a parameter characterizing the strength of the magnetic field that is responsible for the Aharonov-Bohm effect. As the phase of B remains a genuine zero mode while the electromagnetic gauge symmetry is Higgsed in the interior of the vortex, these solutions are superconducting strings.

Toroidal domain walls as Hopfions

The phase modulus of the domain wall is twisted P and Q times along the toroidal and poloidal cycles of the torus, respectively, where Q represents the constituent lump charge. We find that these solutions carry the Hopf charge PQ and can be regarded as Hopfions. The toroidal domain walls are characterized by the two topological charges (P,Q), unlike the conventional Hopfions characterized by only the Hopf charge. We explicitly construct stable solutions of the toroidal domain walls with P, Q = 1,2,3, yielding the Hopf charges 1,2,3,4,6,9.

Unlike the cases of two-component BECs where the phases of square and triangular lattices are present depending on the intercomponent coupling constant and the rotation speed, we find triangular ordered "colorful" vortex lattices where three kind of fractional vortices are placed in order without defects, in all parameter region where the inter-component coupling g' is less than the intra-component coupling g. When g > g' on the other hand, we find the phase separation; In a region where one component is present, the other two components must vanish, where we find ghost vortices in these two components whose positions are separated. In the boundary g = g', the accidental U(3) symmetry is present, in which case two vortices in different components are close to each other in some regions.

Vortex molecules in Bose-Einstein condensates

Stable vortex dimers are known to exist in coherently coupled two component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We construct stable vortex trimers in three component BECs and find that the shape can be controlled by changing the internal coherent (Rabi) couplings. Stable vortex N-omers are also constructed in coherently coupled N-component BECs. We classify all possible N-omers in terms of the mathematical graph theory. Next, we study effects of the Rabi coupling in vortex lattices in two-component BECs. We find how the vortex lattices without the Rabi coupling known before are connected to the Abrikosov lattice of integer vortices with increasing the Rabi coupling. In this process, vortex dimers change their partners in various ways at large couplings. We then find that the Abrikosov lattices are robust in three-component BECs.

Vortex polygons and their stabilities in Bose-Einstein condensates and field theory

We study vortex polygons and their stabilities in miscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, and find that vortex polygons are stable for the total circulation $Q \leq 5$, metastable for $Q = 6$, and unstable for $Q \geq 7$. As a related model in high-energy physics, we also study the vortex polygon of the baby-Skyrme model with an anti-ferromagnetic potential term, and compare both results.

Wall-vortex composite solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We study composite solitons, consisting of domain walls and vortex lines attaching to the walls in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. When the total density of two components is homogeneous, the system can be mapped to the O(3) nonlinear sigma model for the pseudospin representing the two-component order parameter and the analytical solutions of the composite solitons can be obtained. Based on the analytical solutions, we discuss the detailed structure of the composite solitons in two-component condensates by employing the generalized nonlinear sigma model, where all degrees of freedom of the original Gross-Pitaevskii theory are active. The density inhomogeneity results in reduction of the domain wall tension from that in the sigma model limit. We find that the domain wall pulled by a vortex is logarithmically bent as a membrane pulled by a pin, and it bends more flexibly than not only the domain wall in the sigma model but also the expectation from the reduced tension. Finally, we study the composite soliton structure for actual experimental situations with trapped immiscible condensates under rotation through numerical simulations of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations.

Winding Hopfions on R^2 x S^1

We study Hopfions in the Faddeev-Skyrme model with potential terms on R^2 x S^1. Apart from the conventional Hopfions, there exist winding Hopfions, that is, the lump (baby Skyrmion) strings with the lump charge Q with the U(1) modulus twisted P times along S^1, having the Hopf charge PQ. We consider two kinds of potential terms, that is, the potential linear in the field and the ferromagnetic potential with two easy axes, and present stable solutions numerically. We also point out that a Q-lump carries the unit Hopf charge per the period in d=2+1.

Anisotropic Optical Response of Dense Quark Matter under Rotation: Compact Stars as Cosmic Polarizers

Quantum vortices in the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase of QCD have bosonic degrees of freedom, called the orientational zero modes, localized on them. We show that the orientational zero modes are electromagnetically charged. As a result, a vortex in the CFL phase nontrivially interacts with photons. We show that a lattice of vortices acts as a polarizer of photons with wavelengths larger than some critical length.

Baryonic Bound State of Vortices in Multicomponent Superconductors

We construct a bound state of three 1/3-quantized Josephson coupled vortices in three-component superconductors with intrinsic Josephson couplings, which may be relevant with regard to iron-based superconductors. We find a Y-shaped junction of three domain walls connecting the three vortices, resembling the baryonic bound state of three quarks in QCD. The appearance of the Y-junction (but not a Delta-junction) implies that in both cases of superconductors and QCD, the bound state is described by a genuine three-body interaction (but not by the sum of two-body interactions). We also discuss a confinement/deconfinement phase transition.

Colorful boojums at the interface of a color superconductor

We study junctions of vortices, or boojums, at the interface between color and hadronic superconducting/superfluid phases. This type of interface could be present in the interior of neutron stars, where an inner core made of quark matter in the color-flavor-locked phase is surrounded by an outer shell of superconducting protons and superfluid neutrons. We study the fate of magnetic (proton) and superfluid (neutron) vortices as they enter the color-flavor locked phase. We find that proton vortices terminate on Dirac monopoles of the massless magnetic field, and magnetic fluxes of massive gauge field spread along the surface and are screened by surface superconducting currents. On the other hand, three neutron vortices join at a boojum and split into three color magnetic vortices which host confined color-magnetic monopoles when strange quark mass is taken into account. We also present a simple numerical model of the shape of the neutron boojum.

Creating vortons and three-dimensional skyrmions from domain wall annihilation with stretched vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose a mechanism to create a vorton or three-dimensional skyrmion in phase-separated two-component BECs with the order parameters Psi_1 and Psi_2 of the two condensates. We consider a pair of a domain wall (brane) and an anti-domain wall (anti-brane) stretched by vortices (strings), where the Psi_2 component with a vortex winding is sandwiched by two domains of the Psi_1 component. The vortons appear when the domain wall pair annihilates. Experimentally, this can be realized by preparing the phase separation in the order Psi_1, Psi_2 and Psi_1 components, where the nodal plane of a dark soliton in Psi_1 component is filled with the Psi_2 component with vorticity. By selectively removing the filling Psi_2 component gradually with a resonant laser beam, the collision of the brane and anti-brane can be made, creating vortons.

Decomposing Instantons in Two Dimensions

We study BPS string-like solutions in the 3+1 dimensional gauged CP(1) non-linear sigma model. The same analysis can be applied to study instantons in 2 euclidean dimensions. We use the moduli matrix approach to construct analytically the moduli space and and solve numerically the BPS equations. We identify two topologically inequivalent type of magnetic vortices, which we call S and N vortices. Moreover we discuss their relation to "lump-string" solutions present in the un-gauged case. In particular, we describe how a lump is split into a couple of component S-N vortices after gauging. We extend this analysis to the case of the extended Abelian Higgs model with two flavors, which is known to admit semi-local vortices. When we gauge the relative phase between fields, semi-local vortices are also split into component vortices. We discuss interesting applications of this simple set-up. First, gauging of non-linear sigma models reveals a "partonic" nature of instantons in 1+1 dimensions, an idea long studied also in connection with four dimensional instantons. Second, weak gauging provides for an interesting regularization of the metric of semi-local vortices which preserves supersymmetry and does not lift the moduli space of the string.

Defect formation from defect--anti-defect annihilations

We show that when a topological defect with extended world-volume annihilates with an anti-defect, there arise topological defects with dimensions less than those of the original defects by one. Domain wall annihilations create vortices while monopole-string annihilations result in instantons. We find that twisted domain wall rings are vortices, whereas twisted monopole rings are instantons.

Dirac returns: non-Abelian statistics of vortices with Dirac fermions

Topological superconductors classified as type D admit zero-energy Majorana fermions inside vortex cores, and consequently the exchange statistics of vortices becomes non-Abelian, giving a promising example of non-Abelian anyons. On the other hand, types C and DIII admit zero-energy Dirac fermions inside vortex cores. It has been long believed that an essential condition for the realization of non-Abelian statistics is non-locality of Dirac fermions made of two Majorana fermions trapped inside two well-separated vortices as in the case of type D. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, however, we show that vortices with local Dirac fermions also obey non-Abelian statistics.

Fermionic solutions of chiral Gross-Neveu and Bogoliubov-de Gennes systems in nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchy

The chiral Gross-Neveu model or equivalently the linearized Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation has been mapped to the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) hierarchy in the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur formalism by Correa, Dunne and Plyushchay. We derive the general expression for exact fermionic solutions for all gap functions in the arbitrary order of the NLS hierarchy. We also find that the energy spectrum of the n-th NLS hierarchy generally has n+1 gaps. As an illustration, we present the self-consistent two-complex-kink solution with four real parameters and two fermion bound states. The two kinks can be placed at any position and have phase shifts. When the two kinks are well separated, the fermion bound states are localized around each kink in most parameter region. When two kinks with phase shifts close to each other are placed at distance as short as possible, the both fermion bound states have two peaks at the two kinks, i.e., the delocalization of the bound states occurs.

Higher Derivative Corrections to Non-Abelian Vortex Effective Theory

We give a systematic method to calculate higher derivative corrections to low-energy effective theories of solitons, which are in general non-linear sigma models on the moduli spaces of the solitons. By applying it to the effective theory of a single BPS non-Abelian vortex in U(N) gauge theory with N fundamental Higgs fields, we obtain four derivative corrections to the effective sigma model on the moduli space C \times CP^{N-1}. We compare them with the Nambu-Goto action and the Faddeev-Skyrme model. We also show that Yang-Mills instantons/monopoles trapped inside a non-Abelian vortex membrane/string are not modified in the presence of higher derivative terms.

Josephson vortices and the Atiyah-Manton construction

We show that sine-Gordon solitons appear in the low-energy effective theory of a domain wall in a U(1) gauge theory with two charged complex scalar fields with masses, if we introduce the Josephson interaction term between the scalar fields. We identify these sine-Gordon solitons as vortices or CP(1) sigma model instantons in the bulk, which are absorbed into the domain wall world-volume. These vortices can be called as Josephson vortices since they appear in Josephson junctions of two superconductors. This set up gives a physical realization of a lower dimensional analogue of Atiyah-Manton construction of Skyrmions from instanton holonomy.

Non-Abelian statistics of vortices with multiple Majorana fermions

We consider the exchange statistics of vortices, each of which traps an odd number ($N$) of Majorana fermions. We assume that the fermions in a vortex transform in the vector representation of the SO(N) group. Exchange of two vortices turns out to be non-Abelian, and the corresponding operator is further decomposed into two parts: a part that is essentially equivalent to the exchange operator of vortices having a single Majorana fermion in each vortex, and a part representing the Coxeter group. Similar decomposition was already found in the case with N=3, and the result shown here is a generalization to the case with an arbitrary odd $N$. We can obtain the matrix representation of the exchange operators in the Hilbert space that is constructed by using Dirac fermions non-locally defined by Majorana fermions trapped in separated vortices. We also show that the decomposition of the exchange operator implies tensor product structure in its matrix representation.

Spontaneous Magnetization through Non-Abelian Vortex Formation in Rotating Dense Quark Matter

When a color superconductor of high density QCD is rotating, superfluid vortices are inevitably created along the rotation axis. In the color-flavor locked phase realized at the asymptotically large chemical potential, there appear non-Abelian vortices carrying both circulations of superfluid and color magnetic fluxes. A family of solutions has a degeneracy characterized by the Nambu-Goldtone modes CP2, associated with the color-flavor locked symmetry spontaneously broken in the vicinity of the vortex. In this paper, we study electromagnetic coupling of the non-Abelian vortices and find that the degeneracy is removed with the induced effective potential. We obtain one stable vortex solution and a family of metastable vortex solutions, both of which carry ordinary magnetic fluxes in addition to color magnetic fluxes. We discuss quantum mechanical decay of the metastable vortices by quantum tunneling, and compare the effective potential with the other known potentials, the quantum mechanically induced potential and the potential induced by the strange quark mass.

Stable Skyrmions in SU(2) Gauged Bose-Einstein Condensates

We demonstrate that the three-dimensional Skyrmion, which has remained elusive so far, spontaneously appears as the ground state of $SU$(2) symmetric Bose-Einstein condensates coupled with a non-Abelian gauge field. The gauge field is a three-dimensional analogue of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Upon squashing the SO(3) symmetric gauge field to one- or two-dimensional shapes, we find that the ground state continuously undergoes a change from a three-dimensional to a one- or two-dimensional Skyrmion, which is identified by estimating winding numbers and helicity. All of the emerged Skyrmions are physically understandable with the concept of the helical modulation in a unified way. These topological objects might potentially be realizable in two-component BECs experimentally.

Supersymmetry Breaking on Gauged Non-Abelian Vortices

There are a large number of systems characterized by a completely broken gauge symmetry, but with an unbroken global color-flavor diagonal symmetry, i.e., systems in the so-called color-flavor locked phase. If the gauge symmetry breaking supports vortices, the latter develop non-Abelian orientational zero-modes and become non-Abelian vortices, a subject of intense study in the last several years. In this paper we consider the effects of weakly gauging the full exact global flavor symmetry in such systems, deriving an effective description of the light excitations in the presence of a vortex. Surprising consequences are shown to follow. The fluctuations of the vortex orientational modes get diffused to bulk modes through tunneling processes. When our model is embedded in a supersymmetric theory, the vortex is still 1/2 BPS saturated, but the vortex effective action breaks supersymmetry spontaneously.

Tachyon Condensation and Brane Annihilation in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Restricted Lower-dimensional Subspace

In brane cosmology, the Big Bang is hypothesized to occur by the annihilation of the brane-anti-brane pair in a collision, where the branes are three-dimensional objects in a higher-dimensional Universe. Spontaneous symmetry breaking accompanied by the formation of lower-dimensional topological defects, e.g. cosmic strings, is triggered by the so-called `tachyon condensation', where the existence of tachyons is attributable to the instability of the brane-anti-brane system. Here, we discuss the closest analogue of the tachyon condensation in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. We consider annihilation of domain walls, namely branes, in strongly segregated two-component condensates, where one component is sandwiched by two domains of the other component. In this system, the process of the brane annihilation can be projected effectively as ferromagnetic ordering dynamics onto a two-dimensional space. Based on this correspondence, three-dimensional formation of vortices from a domain-wall annihilation is considered to be a kink formation due to spontaneous symmetry breaking in the two-dimensional space. We also discuss a mechanism to create a `vorton' when the sandwiched component has a vortex string bridged between the branes. We hope that this study motivates experimental researches to realize this exotic phenomenon of spontaneous symmetry breaking in superfluid systems.

Tachyon Condensation Due to Domain-Wall Annihilation in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We show theoretically that a domain-wall annihilation in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates causes tachyon condensation accompanied by spontaneous symmetry breaking in a two-dimensional subspace. Three-dimensional vortex formation from domain-wall annihilations is considered a kink formation in subspace. Numerical experiments reveal that the subspatial dynamics obey the dynamic scaling law of phase-ordering kinetics. This model is experimentally feasible and provides insights into how the extra dimensions influence subspatial phase transition in higher-dimensional space.

Vortex counting from field theory

The vortex partition function in 2d N = (2,2) U(N) gauge theory is derived from the field theoretical point of view by using the moduli matrix approach. The character for the tangent space at each moduli space fixed point is written in terms of the moduli matrix, and then the vortex partition function is obtained by applying the localization formula. We find that dealing with the fermionic zero modes is crucial to obtain the vortex partition function with the anti-fundamental and adjoint matters in addition to the fundamental chiral multiplets. The orbifold vortex partition function is also investigated from the field theoretical point of view.

Vortex Formations from Domain Wall Annihilations in Two-component Bose-Einstein Condensates

We theoretically study the vortex formation from the collision of the domain walls in phase-separated two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. The collision process mimics the tachyon condensation for the annihilation of D-brane and anti-D-brane in string theory. A pair annihilation leaves the quantized vortices with superflow along their core, namely `superflowing cosmic strings'. It is revealed that the line density and the core size of the vortices depend on the initial distance between the walls.

A Classical Solution in Six-dimensional Gauge Theory with Higher Derivative Coupling

We show that the spin connection of the standard metric on a six-dimensional sphere gives an exact solution to the generalized self-dual equations suggested by Tchrakian some years ago. We work on an SO(6) gauge theory with a higher-derivative coupling term. The model consists of vector fields only. The pseudo-energy is bound from below by a topological charge which is proportional to the winding number of spatial S^5 around the internal space SO(6). The fifth homotopy group of SO(6) is, indeed, Z. The coupling constant of higher derivative term is quadratic in the radius of the underlying space S^6.

Abe homotopy classification of topological excitations under the topological influence of vortices

Topological excitations are usually classified by the $n$th homotopy group $π_n$. However, for topological excitations that coexist with vortices, there are case in which an element of $π_n$ cannot properly describe the charge of a topological excitation due to the influence of the vortices. This is because an element of $π_n$ corresponding to the charge of a topological excitation may change when the topological excitation circumnavigates a vortex. This phenomenon is referred to as the action of $π_1$ on $π_n$. In this paper, we show that topological excitations coexisting with vortices are classified by the Abe homotopy group $κ_n$. The $n$th Abe homotopy group $κ_n$ is defined as a semi-direct product of $π_1$ and $π_n$. In this framework, the action of $π_1$ on $π_n$ is understood as originating from noncommutativity between $π_1$ and $π_n$. We show that a physical charge of a topological excitation can be described in terms of the conjugacy class of the Abe homotopy group. Moreover, the Abe homotopy group naturally describes vortex-pair creation and annihilation processes, which also influence topological excitations. We calculate the influence of vortices on topological excitations for the case in which the order parameter manifold is $S^n/K$, where $S^n$ is an $n$-dimensional sphere and $K$ is a discrete subgroup of $SO(n+1)$. We show that the influence of vortices on a topological excitation exists only if $n$ is even and $K$ includes a nontrivial element of $O(n)/SO(n)$.

Confined Monopoles Induced by Quantum Effects in Dense QCD

We analytically show that mesonic bound states of confined monopoles appear inside a non-Abelian vortex-string in massless three-flavor QCD at large quark chemical potential mu. The orientational modes CP^2 in the internal space of a vortex is described by the low-energy effective world-sheet theory. Mesons of confined monopoles are dynamically generated as bound states of kinks by the quantum effects in the effective theory. The mass of monopoles is shown to be an exponentially soft scale Delta*exp[-c*(mu/Delta)^2], with the color superconducting gap Delta and some constant c. A possible quark-monopole duality between the hadron phase and the color superconducting phase is also discussed.

Dynamics of Non-Abelian Vortices

The scattering is studied using moduli space metric for well-separated vortices of non-Abelian vortices in (2+1)-dimensional U(N) gauge theories with N Higgs fields in the fundamental representation. Unlike vortices in the Abelian-Higgs model, dynamics of non-Abelian vortices has a lot of new features; The kinetic energy in real space can be transfered to that of internal orientational moduli and vice versa, the energy and charge transfer between two vortices, the scattering angle of collisions with a fixed impact parameter depends on the internal orientations, and some resonances appear due to synchronization of the orientations. Scattering of dyonic non-Abelian vortices in a mass deformed theory is also studied. We find a bound state of two vortices moving along coils around a circle, like a loop of a phone code.

Index theorem and Majorana zero modes along a non-Abelian vortex in a color superconductor

Color superconductivity in high density QCD exhibits the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase. To explore zero modes in the CFL phase in the presence of a non-Abelian vortex with an SU(2) symmetry in the vortex core, we apply the index theorem to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian. From the calculation of the topological index, we find that triplet, doublet and singlet sectors of SU(2) have certain number of chiral Majorana zero modes in the limit of vanishing chemical potential. We also solve the BdG equation by the use of the series expansion to show that the number of zero modes and their chirality match the result of the index theorem. From particle-hole symmetry of the BdG Hamiltonian, we conclude that if and only if the index of a given sector is odd, one zero mode survives generically for a finite chemical potential. We argue that this result should hold nonperturbatively even in the high density limit.

Interaction of half-quantized vortices in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the asymptotic interaction between two half-quantized vortices in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. When two vortices in different components are placed at distance 2R, the leading order of the force between them is found to be (log R/ξ-1/2)/R^3, in contrast to 1/R between vortices placed in the same component. We derive it analytically using the Abrikosov ansatz and the profile functions of the vortices, confirmed numerically with the Gross-Pitaevskii model. We also find that the short-range cutoff of the inter-vortex potential linearly depends on the healing length.

Majorana meets Coxeter: Non-Abelian Majorana Fermions and Non-Abelian Statistics

We discuss statistics of vortices having zero-energy non-Abelian Majorana fermions inside them. Considering the system of multiple non-Abelian vortices, we derive a non-Abelian statistics that differs from the previously derived non-Abelian statistics. The new non-Abelian statistics presented here is given by a tensor product of two different groups, namely the non-Abelian statistics obeyed by the Abelian Majorana fermions and the Coxeter group. The Coxeter group is a symmetric group related to the symmetry of polytopes in a high-dimensional space. As the simplest example, we consider the case in which a vortex contains three Majorana fermions that are mixed with each other under the SO(3) transformations. We concretely present the representation of the Coxeter group in our case and its geometrical expressions in the high-dimensional Hilbert space constructed from non-Abelian Majorana fermions.

Non-Abelian Monopoles in the Higgs Phase

We use the moduli matrix approach to study the moduli space of 1/4 BPS kinks supported by vortices in the Higgs phase of N = 2 supersymmetric U(N) gauge theories when non-zero masses for the matter hypermultiplets are introduced. We focus on the case of degenerate masses. In these special cases vortices acquire new orientational degrees of freedom, and become "non-Abelian". Kinks acquire new degrees of freedom too, and we will refer to them as "non-Abelian". As already noticed for the Abelian case, non-Abelian kinks must correspond to non-Abelian monopoles of the unbroken phase of SU(N) Yang-Mills. We show, in some special cases, that the moduli spaces of the two objects are in one-to-one correspondence. We argue that the corre- spondence holds in the most general case. The consequence of our result is two-fold. First, it gives an alternative way to construct non-Abelian monopoles, in addition to other well- known techniques (Nahm transform, spectral curves, rational maps). Second, it opens the way to the study of the quantum physics of non- Abelian monopoles, by considering the simpler non-Abelian kinks.

Fermion structure of non-Abelian vortices in high density QCD

We study the internal structure of a non-Abelian vortex in color superconductivity with respect to quark degrees of freedom. Stable non-Abelian vortices appear in the Color-Flavor-Locked phase whose symmetry SU(3)_{c+L+R} is further broken to SU(2)_{c+L+R} x U(1)_{c+L+R} at the vortex cores. Microscopic structure of vortices at scales shorter than the coherence length can be analyzed by the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (B-dG) equation (rather than the Ginzburg-Landau equation). We obtain quark spectra from the B-dG equation by treating the diquark gap having the vortex configuration as a background field. We find that there are massless modes (zero modes) well-localized around a vortex, in the triplet and singlet states of the unbroken symmetry SU(2)_{c+L+R} x U(1)_{c+L+R}. The velocities v_i of the massless modes (i=t,s for triplet and singlet) change at finite chemical potential μ, and decrease as μbecomes large. Therefore, low energy excitations in the vicinity of the vortices are effectively described by 1+1 dimensional massless fermions whose velocities are reduced v_i<1.

Group Theory of Non-Abelian Vortices

We investigate the structure of the moduli space of multiple BPS non-Abelian vortices in U(N) gauge theory with N fundamental Higgs fields, focusing our attention on the action of the exact global (color-flavor diagonal) SU(N) symmetry on it. The moduli space of a single non-Abelian vortex, CP(N-1), is spanned by a vector in the fundamental representation of the global SU(N) symmetry. The moduli space of winding-number k vortices is instead spanned by vectors in the direct-product representation: they decompose into the sum of irreducible representations each of which is associated with a Young tableau made of k boxes, in a way somewhat similar to the standard group composition rule of SU(N) multiplets. The Kähler potential is exactly determined in each moduli subspace, corresponding to an irreducible SU(N) orbit of the highest-weight configuration.

Quasi-Nambu-Goldstone Modes in Bose-Einstein Condensates

The quasi-NG modes emerge when the symmetry of a ground state is larger than that of the Hamiltonian. When they appear, the conventional vacuum manifold should be enlarged. Consequently topological defects that are stable within the conventional vacuum manifold become unstable and decay by emitting the quasi-NG modes. Contrary to conventional wisdom, however, we show that the topological defects are stabilized by quantum fluctuations that make the quasi-NG modes massive, thereby suppressing their emission.

Topological Excitations in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

QCD is expected to be in the color-flavor locking phase in high baryon density, which exhibits color superconductivity. The most fundamental topological objects in the color superconductor are non-Abelian vortices which are topologically stable color magnetic flux tubes. We present numerical solutions of the color magnetic flux tube for diverse choices of the coupling constants. We also analytically study its asymptotic profiles and find that they are different from the case of usual superconductors. We propose the width of color magnetic fluxes and find that it is larger than naive expectation of the Compton wave length of the massive gluon when the gluon mass is larger than the scalar mass.

Color Magnetic Flux Tubes in Dense QCD. II: Effective World-Sheet Theory

Color magnetic flux tubes appear in the color-flavor locked phase of high density QCD, which exhibits color superconductivity as well as superfluidity. They are non-Abelian superfluid vortices and are accompanied by orientational zero modes in the internal space associated with the color-flavor locked symmetry spontaneously broken in the presence of the vortex. We show that those zero modes are localized around the vortex in spite of the logarithmic divergence of its tension, and derive the low-energy effective theory of them on the world-sheet of the vortex-string.

Domain walls with non-Abelian orientational moduli

Domain walls with non-Abelian orientational moduli are constructed in U(N) gauge theories coupled to Higgs scalar fields with degenerate masses. The associated global symmetry is broken by the domain walls, resulting in the Nambu-Goldstone (and quasi-Nambu-Goldstone) bosons, which form the non-Abelian orientational moduli. As walls separate, the wave functions of the non-Abelian orientational moduli spread between domain walls. By taking the limit of Higgs mass differences to vanish, we clarify the convertion of wall position moduli into the non-Abelian orientational moduli. The moduli space metric and its Kahler potential of the effective field theory on the domain walls are constructed. We consider two models: a U(1) gauge theory with several charged Higgs fields, and a U(N) gauge theory with 2N Higgs fields in the fundamental representation. More details are found in our paper published in Phys. Rev. D77 (2008) 125008 [arXiv:0802.3135 [hep-th]].

Gauge symmetry breaking in ten-dimensional Yang-Mills theory dynamically compactified on S^6

We study fluctuation modes in ten-dimensional Yang-Mills theory with a higher derivative term for the gauge field. We consider the ten-dimensional space-time to be a product of a four-dimensional space-time and six-dimensional sphere which exhibits dynamical compactification. Because of the isometry on S^6, there are flat directions corresponding to the Nambu-Goldstone zero modes in the effective theory on the solution. The zero modes are absorbed into gauge fields and form massive vector fields as a consequence of the Higgs-Kibble mechanism. The mass of the vector fields is proportional to the inverse of the radius of the sphere and larger than the mass scale set by the radius because of the higher derivative term.

Non-Abelian Vortex-String Dynamics from Nonlinear Realization

The dynamics of the non-Abelian vortex-string, which describes its low energy oscillations into the target $D=3+1$ spacetime as well as its orientations in the internal space, is derived by the approach of nonlinear realization. The resulting action correlating these two sectors is found to have an invariant synthesis form of the Nambu-Goto-${\bf C}P^{N-1}$ model actions. Higher order corrections to the vortex actions are presented up to the order of quartic derivatives. General $p$-brane dynamics in terms of the internal symmetry breaking is also discussed.

SO and USp Kahler and Hyper-Kahler Quotients and Lumps

We study non-linear sigma models whose target spaces are the Higgs phases of supersymmetric SO and USp gauge theories by using the Kahler and hyper-Kahler quotient constructions. We obtain the explicit Kahler potentials and develop an expansion formula to make use of the obtained potentials from which we also calculate the curvatures of the manifolds. The 1/2 BPS lumps in the U(1) x SO and U(1) x USp Kahler quotients and their effective descriptions are also studied. In this connection, a general relation between moduli spaces of vortices and lumps is discussed. We find a new singular limit of the lumps with non-vanishing sizes in addition to the ordinary small lump singularity. The former is due to the existence of singular submanifolds in the target spaces.

Non-Abelian Strings in Hot or Dense QCD

Different types of non-Abelian vortex-strings appear in dense or hot QCD, both of which possess non-Abelian internal orientation zero modes. We calculate the interaction between them and find the universal repulsion for dense QCD (color superconductivity) and the dependence on the orientations for hot QCD (chirally broken phase). This is a review article based on our papers arXiv:0708.4092 and arXiv:0708.4096.

Dynamics of Domain Wall Networks

Networks or webs of domain walls are admitted in Abelian or non-Abelian gauge theory coupled to fundamental Higgs fields with complex masses. We examine the dynamics of the domain wall loops by using the moduli approximation and find a phase rotation induces a repulsive force which can be understood as a Noether charge of Q-solitons. Non-Abelian gauge theory allows different types of loops which can be deformed to each other by changing a modulus. This admits the moduli geometry like a sandglass made by gluing the tips of the two cigar-(cone-)like metrics of a single triangle loop. We conclude that the sizes of all loops tend to grow for a late time in general models with complex Higgs masses, while the sizes are stabilized at some values once triplet masses are introduced for the Higgs fields. We also show that the stationary motion on the moduli space of the domain wall webs represents 1/4 BPS Q-webs of walls.

Non-Abelian Strings in High Density QCD: Zero Modes and Interactions

The most fundamental strings in high density color superconductivity are the non-Abelian semi-superfluid strings which have color gauge flux tube but behave as superfluid vortices in the energetic point of view. We show that in addition to the usual translational zero modes, these vortices have normalizable orientational zero modes in the internal space, associated with the color-flavor locking symmetry broken in the presence of the strings. The interaction among two parallel non-Abelian semi-superfluid strings is derived for general relative orientational zero modes to show the universal repulsion. This implies that the previously known superfluid vortices, formed by spontaneously broken U(1)_B, are unstable to decay. Moreover, our result proves the stability of color superconductors in the presence of external color gauge fields.

1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 BPS Equations in SUSY Yang-Mills-Higgs Systems -- Field Theoretical Brane Configurations --

We systematically classify 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 BPS equations in SUSY gauge theories in d=6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 with eight supercharges, with gauge groups and matter contents being arbitrary. Instantons (strings) and vortices (3-branes) are only allowed 1/2 BPS solitons in d=6 with N=1 SUSY. We find two 1/4 BPS equations and the unique 1/8 BPS equation in d=6 by considering configurations made of these field theory branes. All known BPS equations are rederived while several new 1/4 and 1/8 BPS equations are found in dimension less than six by dimensional reductions.

Moduli Space of Non-Abelian Vortices

We completely determine the moduli space M_{N,k} of k-vortices in U(N) gauge theory with N Higgs fields in the fundamental representation. Its open subset for separated vortices is found as the symmetric product (C x CP^{N-1})^k / S_k. Orbifold singularities of this space correspond to coincident vortices and are resolved resulting in a smooth moduli manifold. Relation to Kahler quotient construction is discussed.

Non-Abelian Vortices of Higher Winding Numbers

We make a detailed study of the moduli space of winding number two (k=2) axially symmetric vortices (or equivalently, of co-axial composite of two fundamental vortices), occurring in U(2) gauge theory with two flavors in the Higgs phase, recently discussed by Hashimoto-Tong (hep-th/0506022) and Auzzi-Shifman-Yung (hep-th/0511150). We find that it is a weighted projective space WCP^2_(2,1,1)=CP^2/Z_2. This manifold contains an A_1-type (Z_2) orbifold singularity even though the full moduli space including the relative position moduli is smooth. The SU(2) transformation properties of such vortices are studied. Our results are then generalized to U(N) gauge theory with N flavors, where the internal moduli space of k=2 axially symmetric vortices is found to be a weighted Grassmannian manifold. It contains singularities along a submanifold.

Solitons in the Higgs phase -- the moduli matrix approach --

We review our recent work on solitons in the Higgs phase. We use U(N_C) gauge theory with N_F Higgs scalar fields in the fundamental representation, which can be extended to possess eight supercharges. We propose the moduli matrix as a fundamental tool to exhaust all BPS solutions, and to characterize all possible moduli parameters. Moduli spaces of domain walls (kinks) and vortices, which are the only elementary solitons in the Higgs phase, are found in terms of the moduli matrix. Stable monopoles and instantons can exist in the Higgs phase if they are attached by vortices to form composite solitons. The moduli spaces of these composite solitons are also worked out in terms of the moduli matrix. Webs of walls can also be formed with characteristic difference between Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories. We characterize the total moduli space of these elementary as well as composite solitons. Effective Lagrangians are constructed on walls and vortices in a compact form. We also present several new results on interactions of various solitons, such as monopoles, vortices, and walls. Review parts contain our works on domain walls (hep-th/0404198, hep-th/0405194, hep-th/0412024, hep-th/0503033, hep-th/0505136), vortices (hep-th/0511088, hep-th/0601181), domain wall webs (hep-th/0506135, hep-th/0508241, hep-th/0509127), monopole-vortex-wall systems (hep-th/0405129, hep-th/0501207), instanton-vortex systems (hep-th/0412048), effective Lagrangian on walls and vortices (hep-th/0602289), classification of BPS equations (hep-th/0506257), and Skyrmions (hep-th/0508130).

Non-Abelian Webs of Walls

Domain wall junctions are studied in N=2 supersymmetric U(Nc) gauge theory with Nf(>Nc) flavors. We find that all three possibilities are realized for positive, negative and zero junction charges. The positive junction charge is found to be carried by a topological charge in the Hitchin system of an SU(2) gauge subgroup. We establish rules of the construction of the webs of walls. Webs can be understood qualitatively by grid diagram and quantitatively by associating moduli parameters to web configurations.

Effective Theory on Non-Abelian Vortices in Six Dimensions

Non-Abelian vortices in six spacetime dimensions are obtained for a supersymmetric U(N) gauge theory with N hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. Massless (moduli) fields are identified and classified into Nambu-Goldstone and quasi-Nambu-Goldstone fields. Effective gauge theories for the moduli fields are constructed on the four-dimensional world volume of vortices. A systematic method to obtain the most general form of the effective Lagrangian consistent with symmetry is proposed. The moduli space for the multi-vortices is found to be a vector bundle over the complex Grassmann manifold.

Walls and vortices in supersymmetric non-abelian gauge theories

We review recent results on the BPS multi-wall solutions in supersymmetric U(N_C) gauge theories in five dimensions with N_F(>N_C) hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. Total moduli space of the BPS non-Abelian walls is found to be the complex Grassmann manifold SU(N_F)/[SU(N_C)xSU(N_F-N_C)xU(1)]. Exact solutions are obtained with full generic moduli for infinite gauge coupling. A 1/4 BPS equation is also solved, giving vortices together with the non-Abelian walls and monopoles in the Higgs phase attached to the vortices. The full moduli space of the 1/4 BPS solutions is found to be holomorphic maps from a complex plane to the wall moduli space.

Auxiliary Field Methods in Supersymmetric Nonlinear Sigma Models

Auxiliary field methods in D=2 (or 3), N=2 supersymmetric (SUSY) nonlinear sigma models (NLSMs) are studied. For these models auxiliary fields as Lagrange multipliers belong to a vector or a chiral superfield, which gives a Kahler quotient of complexified gauge group or a holomorphic constraint on it, respectively. Using these, NLSMs on all Hermitian symmetric spaces were formulated previously. In this paper, we formulate new SUSY NLSMs on some rank-two Kahler coset spaces as SUSY gauge theories with two Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters.

BPS Wall in N=2 SUSY Nonlinear Sigma Model with Eguchi-Hanson Manifold

BPS wall solutions are obtained for N=2 supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model with Eguchi-Hanson target manifold in a manifestly supersymmetric manner. The model is constructed by a massive hyper-Kahler quotient method both in the N=1 superfield and in the N=2 superfield (harmonic superspace). We describe the model in simple terms and give relations between various parameterizations which are useful to describe the model and the solution. Some more details can be found in our previous paper [hep-th/0211103]. This article is dedicated to Professor Hiroshi Ezawa on the occasion of his seventieth birthday.

Manifest Supersymmetry for BPS Walls in N=2 Nonlinear Sigma Models

BPS equations and wall solutions are studied keeping (part of) supersymmetry (SUSY) manifest. Using N=1 superfields, massive hyper-Kahler quotient is introduced to obtain massive N=2 (8 SUSY) nonlinear sigma models in four dimensions with T*CP(n) target manifold, which yield BPS wall solutions for the n=1 case. We also describe massive hyper-Kahler quotient of T*CP(n) by using the harmonic superspace formalism which preserves all SUSY manifestly, and BPS equations and wall solutions are obtained in the n=1 case.

BPS Lumps and Their Intersections in ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY Nonlinear Sigma Models

BPS lumps in ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY nonlinear sigma models on hyper-\kahler manifolds in four dimensions are studied. We present new lump solutions with various kinds of topological charges. New BPS equations and a new BPS bound, expressed by the three complex structures on hyper-\kahler manifolds, are found. We show that any states satisfying these BPS equations preserve 1/8 (1/4) SUSY of ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY nonlinear sigma models with (without) a potential term. These BPS states include non-parallel multi-(Q-)lumps.

K"ahler Potential for Global Symmetry Breaking in Supersymmetric Theories

We have developed N=1 supersymmetric nonlinear realization methods, which realize global symmetry breaking in N=1 supersymmetric theories. The target space of nonlinear sigma models with a linear model origin is a G^C-orbit, which is a non-compact non-homogeneous K"ahler manifold. We show that, if and only if the orbit is open, it includes a compact homogeneous K"ahler manifold as a submanifold, and a class of strictly G-invariant K"ahler potentials reduces to a K"ahler potential G-invariant up to a K"ahler transformation on the submanifold. Hence, in the case of an open orbit, the most general low-energy effective K"ahler potential can be written as the sum of those of the compact submanifolds and an arbitrary function of strictly G-invariants.

Moduli Space of Global Symmetry in N=1 Supersymmetric Theories and the Quasi-Nambu-Goldstone Bosons

We derive the moduli space for the global symmetry in N=1 supersymmetric theories. We show, at the generic points, it coincides with the space of quasi-Nambu-Goldstone (QNG) bosons, which appear besides the ordinary Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons when global symmetry G breaks down spontaneously to its subgroup H with preserving N=1 supersymmetry. At the singular points, most of the NG bosons change to the QNG bosons and the unbroken global symmetry is enhanced. The G-orbits parametrized by the NG bosons are the fibre at the moduli space and the singular points correspond to the point where H-orbit (in G-orbit) shrinks. We also show the low-energy effective Lagrangian is the arbitrary function of the orbit map.
