Numerical evidence for a Haagerup conformal field theory

We numerically study an anyon chain based on the Haagerup fusion category, and find evidence that it leads in the long-distance limit to a conformal field theory whose central charge is $\sim 2$. Fusion categories generalize the concept of finite group symmetries to non-invertible symmetry operations, and the Haagerup fusion category is the simplest one which comes neither from finite groups nor affine Lie algebras. As such, ours is the first example of conformal field theories which have truly exotic generalized symmetries.

Some comments on 6d global gauge anomalies

Global gauge anomalies in $6d$ associated with non-trivial homotopy groups $π_6(G)$ for $G=SU(2)$, $SU(3)$, and $G_2$ were computed and utilized in the past. In the modern bordism point of view of anomalies, however, they come from the bordism groups $Ω^\text{spin}_7(BG)$, which are in fact trivial and therefore preclude their existence. Instead, it was noticed that a proper treatment of the $6d$ Green-Schwarz mechanism reproduces the same anomaly cancellation conditions derived from $π_6(G)$. In this paper, we revisit and clarify the relation between these two different approaches.

Generalized symmetries and holography in ABJM-type theories

We revisit the N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theories and their supergravity duals in the context of generalized symmetries. This allows us to finally clarify how the $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ and $(SU(N)\times SU(N))/\mathbb{Z}_N$ theories, as well as other quotient theories that have recently been discussed, fit into the holographic framework. It also resolves a long standing puzzle regarding the di-baryon operator in the $U(N)\times U(N)$ theory.

Revisiting Wess-Zumino-Witten terms

We revisit various topological issues concerning four-dimensional ungauged and gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) terms for $SU$ and $SO$ quantum chromodynamics (QCD), from the modern bordism point of view. We explain, for example, why the definition of the $4d$ WZW terms requires the spin structure. We also discuss how the mixed anomaly involving the 1-form symmetry of $SO$ QCD is reproduced in the low-energy sigma model.

The super Frobenius-Schur indicator and finite group gauge theories on pin$^-$ surfaces

It is well-known that the value of the Frobenius-Schur indicator $|G|^{-1} \sum_{g\in G} χ(g^2)=\pm1$ of a real irreducible representation of a finite group $G$ determines which of the two types of real representations it belongs to, i.e. whether it is strictly real or quaternionic. We study the extension to the case when a homomorphism $φ:G\to \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ gives the group algebra $\mathbb{C}[G]$ the structure of a superalgebra. Namely, we construct of a super version of the Frobenius-Schur indicator whose value for a real irreducible super representation is an eighth root of unity, distinguishing which of the eight types of irreducible real super representations described in [Wall1964] it belongs to. We also discuss its significance in the context of two-dimensional finite-group gauge theories on pin$^-$ surfaces.

Topological Superconductors on Superstring Worldsheets

We point out that different choices of Gliozzi-Scherk-Olive (GSO) projections in superstring theory can be conveniently understood by the inclusion of fermionic invertible phases, or equivalently topological superconductors, on the worldsheet. This allows us to find that the unoriented Type $\rm 0$ string theory with $Ω^2=(-1)^{\sf f}$ admits different GSO projections parameterized by $n$ mod 8, depending on the number of Kitaev chains on the worldsheet. The presence of $n$ boundary Majorana fermions then leads to the classification of D-branes by $KO^n(X)\oplus KO^{-n}(X)$ in these theories, which we also confirm by the study of the D-brane boundary states. Finally, we show that there is no essentially new GSO projection for the Type $\rm I$ worldsheet theory by studying the relevant bordism group, which classifies corresponding invertible phases. This paper provides the details for the results announced in the letter \cite{Kaidi:2019pzj}.

preprint2019arXiv

GSO projections via SPT phases

We point out that the choice of phases in GSO projections can be accounted for by a choice of fermionic SPT phases on the worldsheet of the string. This point of view not only easily explains why there are essentially two type II theories, but also predicts that there are unoriented type 0 theories labeled by n mod 8, and that there is an essentially unique choice of the type I worldsheet theory. We also discuss the relationship between this point of view and the K-theoretic classification of D-branes.

On gauging finite subgroups

We study in general spacetime dimension the symmetry of the theory obtained by gauging a non-anomalous finite normal Abelian subgroup $A$ of a $Γ$-symmetric theory. Depending on how anomalous $Γ$ is, we find that the symmetry of the gauged theory can be i) a direct product of $G=Γ/A$ and a higher-form symmetry $\hat A$ with a mixed anomaly, where $\hat A$ is the Pontryagin dual of $A$; ii) an extension of the ordinary symmetry group $G$ by the higher-form symmetry $\hat A$; iii) or even more esoteric types of symmetries which are no longer groups. We also discuss the relations to the effect called the $H^3(G,\hat A)$ symmetry localization obstruction in the condensed-matter theory and to some of the constructions in the works of Kapustin-Thorngren and Wang-Wen-Witten.

Reflection groups and 3d $\mathcal{N}\ge $ 6 SCFTs

We point out that the moduli spaces of all known 3d $\mathcal{N}=$ 8 and $\mathcal{N}=$ 6 SCFTs, after suitable gaugings of finite symmetry groups, have the form $\mathbb{C}^{4r}/Γ$ where $Γ$ is a real or complex reflection group depending on whether the theory is $\mathcal{N}=$ 8 or $\mathcal{N}=$ 6, respectively. Real reflection groups are either dihedral groups, Weyl groups, or two sporadic cases $H_{3,4}$. Since the BLG theories and the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories correspond to dihedral and Weyl groups, it is strongly suggested that there are two yet-to-be-discovered 3d $\mathcal{N}=$ 8 theories for $H_{3,4}$. We also show that all known $\mathcal{N}=$ 6 theories correspond to complex reflection groups collectively known as $G(k,x,N)$. Along the way, we demonstrate that two ABJM theories $(SU(N)_k\times SU(N)_{-k})/\mathbb{Z}_N$ and $(U(N)_k\times U(N)_{-k})/\mathbb{Z}_k$ are actually equivalent.

preprint2017arXiv

On finite symmetries and their gauging in two dimensions

It is well-known that if we gauge a $\mathbb{Z}_n$ symmetry in two dimensions, a dual $\mathbb{Z}_n$ symmetry appears, such that re-gauging this dual $\mathbb{Z}_n$ symmetry leads back to the original theory. We describe how this can be generalized to non-Abelian groups, by enlarging the concept of symmetries from those defined by groups to those defined by unitary fusion categories. We will see that this generalization is also useful when studying what happens when a non-anomalous subgroup of an anomalous finite group is gauged: for example, the gauged theory can have non-Abelian group symmetry even when the original symmetry is an Abelian group. We then discuss the axiomatization of two-dimensional topological quantum field theories whose symmetry is given by a category. We see explicitly that the gauged version is a topological quantum field theory with a new symmetry given by a dual category.

Gauge interactions and topological phases of matter

We initiate the study of the effects of strongly-coupled gauge interactions on the properties of the topological phases of matter. In particular, we discuss fermionic systems with three spatial dimensions, protected by time reversal symmetry. We first derive a sufficient condition for the introduction of a dynamical Yang-Mills field to preserve the topological phase of matter, and then show how the massless pions capture in the infrared the topological properties of the fermions in the ultraviolet. Finally, we use the S-duality of ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetric $SU(2)$ gauge theory with $N_f{=}4$ flavors to show that the $ν{=}16$ phase of Majorana fermions can be continuously connected to the trivial $ν{=}0$ phase.

Hofstadter's Butterfly in Quantum Geometry

We point out that the recent conjectural solution to the spectral problem for the Hamiltonian $H=e^{x}+e^{-x}+e^{p}+e^{-p}$ in terms of the refined topological invariants of a local Calabi-Yau geometry has an intimate relation with two-dimensional non-interacting electrons moving in a periodic potential under a uniform magnetic field. In particular, we find that the quantum A-period, determining the relation between the energy eigenvalue and the Kahler modulus of the Calabi-Yau, can be found explicitly when the quantum parameter $q=e^{i\hbar}$ is a root of unity, that its branch cuts are given by Hofstadter's butterfly, and that its imaginary part counts the number of states of the Hofstadter Hamiltonian. The modular double operation, exchanging $\hbar$ and $4π^2/\hbar$, plays an important role.

On 4d rank-one N=3 superconformal field theories

We study the properties of 4d N=3 superconformal field theories whose rank is one, i.e. those that reduce to a single vector multiplet on their moduli space of vacua. We find that the moduli space can only be of the form C^3/Z_k for k=1,2,3,4,6, and that the supersymmetry automatically enhances to N=4 for k=1,2. In addition, we determine the central charges a and c in terms of k, and construct the associated 2d chiral algebras, which turn out to be exotic N=2 supersymmetric W-algebras.

6d $\mathcal{N}{=}(1,0)$ theories on $S^1/T^2$ and class S theories: part II

We study the $T^2$ compactification of a class of 6d $\mathcal{N}{=}(1,0)$ theories that is Higgsable to $\mathcal{N}{=}(2,0)$ theories. We show that the resulting 4d $\mathcal{N}{=}2$ theory at the origin of the Coulomb branch and the parameter space is generically given by two superconformal matter sectors coupled by an infrared-free gauge multiplet and another conformal gauge multiplet. Our analysis utilizes the 5d theories obtained by putting the same class of 6d theories on $S^1$. Our class includes, among others, the 6d theories describing multiple M5 branes on an ALE singularity, and we analyze them in detail. The resulting 4d theory has manifestly both the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ and the full flavor symmetry. We also discuss in detail the special cases of 6d theories where the infrared-free gauge multiplet is absent. In an appendix, we give a field-theoretical argument for an F-theoretic constraint that forbids a particular 6d anomaly-free matter content, as an application of our analysis.

6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ theories on $T^2$ and class S theories: part I

We show that the $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ superconformal theory on a single M5 brane on the ALE space of type $G=A_n, D_n, E_n$, when compactified on $T^2$, becomes a class S theory of type $G$ on a sphere with two full punctures and a simple puncture. We study this relation from various viewpoints. Along the way, we develop a new method to study the 4d SCFT arising from the $T^2$ compactification of a class of 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ theories we call very Higgsable.

Instanton operators and symmetry enhancement in 5d supersymmetric gauge theories

Supersymmetric gauge theories in five dimensions often exhibit less symmetry than the ultraviolet fixed points from which they flow. The fixed points might have larger flavor symmetry or they might even be secretly six-dimensional theories on S^1. Here we provide a simple criterion when such symmetry enhancement in the ultraviolet should occur, by a direct study of the fermionic zero modes around one-instanton operators.

On skein relations in class S theories

Loop operators of a class S theory arise from networks on the corresponding Riemann surface, and their operator product expansions are given in terms of the skein relations, that we describe in detail in the case of class S theories of type A. As two applications, we explicitly determine networks corresponding to dyonic loops of $N=4$ $SU(3)$ super Yang-Mills, and compute the superconformal index of a nontrivial network operator of the $T_3$ theory.

Physics at the entangling surface

To consider the entanglement between the spatial region $A$ and its complement in a QFT, we need to assign a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_A$ to the region, by making a certain choice on the boundary $\partial A$. We argue that a small physical boundary is implicitly inserted at the entangling surface. We investigate these issues in the context of 2d CFTs, and show that we can indeed read off the Cardy states of the $c=1/2$ minimal model from the entanglement entropy of the critical Ising chain.

A counterexample to the a-'theorem'

The conclusion of the original paper was wrong, due to the incorrect assumption that the low-energy limit at the strongly-coupled point consists of a single, coupled SCFT. By taking into account the fact that the low-energy limit consists of multiple decoupled parts, it was later shown in arXiv:1011.4568 that there is no violation of the a-theorem in this system. Furthermore, the a-theorem itself was convincingly demonstrated in arXiv:1107.3987, and the argument presented there has been further refined. The rest of this paper is kept as it was, for some parts of the discussions might still be of interest. Original abstract: We exhibit a renormalization group flow for a four-dimensional gauge theory along which the conformal central charge 'a' increases. The flow connects the maximally superconformal point of an N=2 gauge theory with gauge group SU(N+1) and N_f=2N flavors in the ultraviolet, to a strongly-coupled superconformal point of the SU(N) gauge theory with N_f=2N massless flavors in the infrared. Our example does not contradict the proof of the a-theorem via a-maximization, due to the presence of accidental symmetries in the infrared limit. Nor does it contradict the holographic a-theorem, because these gauge theories do not possess weakly-curved holographic duals.

A review on instanton counting and W-algebras

This is the third article in the collection of reviews "Exact results on N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories", ed. J. Teschner. It is explained how to compute the instanton partition functions. The results can be written as sums over bases for the equivariant cohomology of instanton moduli spaces. The known results relating the symmetries of these spaces to the symmetries of conformal field theory are reviewed.

Anomaly polynomial of general 6d SCFTs

We describe a method to determine the anomaly polynomials of general 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs, in terms of the anomaly matching on their tensor branches. This method is almost purely field theoretical, and can be applied to all known 6d SCFTs. We demonstrate our method in many concrete examples, including $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theories of arbitrary type and the theories on M5 branes on ALE singularities, reproducing the $N^3$ behavior. We check the results against the anomaly polynomials computed M-theoretically via the anomaly inflow.

Magnetic discrete gauge field in the confining vacua and the supersymmetric index

It has recently been argued that the confining vacua of Yang-Mills theory in the far infrared can have topological degrees of freedom given by magnetic $\mathbb{Z}_q$ gauge field, both in the non-supersymmetric case and in the N=1 supersymmetric case. In this short note we give another piece of evidence by computing and matching the supersymmetric index of the pure super Yang-Mills theory both in the ultraviolet and in the infrared.

Mass-deformed $T_N$ as a linear quiver

The $T_N$ theory is a non-Lagrangian theory with SU(N) flavor symmetry. We argue that when mass terms are given so that two of SU(N)'s are both broken to SU(N-1) x U(1), it becomes $T_{N-1}$ theory coupled to an SU(N-1) vector multiplet together with N fundamentals. This implies that when two of SU(N)'s are both broken to U(1)$^{N-1}$, the theory becomes a linear quiver. We perform various checks of this statement, by using the 5d partition function, the structure of the coupling constants, the Higgs branch, and the Seiberg-Witten curve. We also study the case with more general punctures.

On the 6d origin of discrete additional data of 4d gauge theories

Starting with a choice of gauge algebras, specification of a 4d gauge theory involves additional data, namely the gauge groups and the discrete theta angles. Equivalently, one needs to specify the set of charges of allowed line operators. In this note, we study how these additional data are represented in 6d, when the 4d theory in question is an N=4 super Yang-Mills theory or an N=2 class S theory. We will see that the Z_N symmetry of the so-called T_N theory plays an important role. As a byproduct, we will find that the superconformal index of class S theories can be refined so that it can give 2d q-deformed Yang-Mills theory with different gauge groups associated to the same gauge algebra.

2d SCFTs from M2-branes

We consider the low-energy limit of the two-dimensional theory on k M2-branes suspended between a straight M5-brane and a curved M5-brane. We argue that it is described by an N=(2,2) supersymmetric gauge theory with no matter fields but with a non-trivial twisted superpotential, and also by an N=(2,2) supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg model, such that the (twisted) superpotentials are determined by the shape of the M5-branes. We find particular cases realize Kazama-Suzuki models. Evidence is provided by the study of ground states, chiral rings, BPS spectra and S^2 partition functions of the systems.

Elliptic genera of 2d N=2 gauge theories

We compute the elliptic genera of general two-dimensional N=(2,2) and N=(0,2) gauge theories. We find that the elliptic genus is given by the sum of Jeffrey-Kirwan residues of a meromorphic form, representing the one-loop determinant of fields, on the moduli space of flat connections on T^2. We give several examples illustrating our formula, with both Abelian and non-Abelian gauge groups, and discuss some dualities for U(k) and SU(k) theories. This paper is a sequel to the authors' previous paper arXiv:1305.0533.

Elliptic genera of two-dimensional N=2 gauge theories with rank-one gauge groups

We compute the elliptic genera of two-dimensional N=(2,2) and N=(0,2) gauged linear sigma models via supersymmetric localization, for rank-one gauge groups. The elliptic genus is expressed as a sum over residues of a meromorphic function whose argument is the holonomy of the gauge field along both the spatial and the temporal directions of the torus. We illustrate our formulas by a few examples including the quintic Calabi-Yau, N=(2,2) SU(2) and O(2) gauge theories coupled to N fundamental chiral multiplets, and a geometric N=(0,2) model.

N=1 dynamics with T_N theory

We study the dynamics of N=1 supersymmetric systems consisting of the strongly-coupled superconformal theory T_N, SU(N) gauge groups, and fundamental chiral multiplets. We demonstrate that such systems exhibit familiar phenomena such as deformation of the vacuum moduli space, appearance of the dynamical superpotential, and Coulomb branches with N=1 Seiberg-Witten curves. The analysis requires a rather detailed knowledge of the chiral ring of the T_N theory, which will also be discussed at length.

New N=1 Dualities

We show that the N=1 supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory with 2N flavors without superpotential has not only the standard Seiberg dual description but also another dual description involving two copies of the so-called T_N theory. This is a natural generalization to N>2 of a dual description of SU(2) gauge theory with 4 flavors found by Csaki, Schmaltz, Skiba and Terning. We also study dualities of other N=1 SCFTs involving copies of T_N theories. Our duality is the basic operation from which a recently-found web of N=1 dualities obtained by compactifying M5-branes on Riemann surfaces can be derived field-theoretically.

Notes on reductions of superstring theory to bosonic string theory

It is in general very subtle to integrate over the odd moduli of super Riemann surfaces in perturbative superstring computations. We study how these subtleties go away in favorable cases, including the embedding of N=0 string to N=1 string by Berkovits and Vafa, and the relation of the graviphoton amplitude and the topological string amplitude by Antoniadis, Gava, Narain and Taylor and Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri and Vafa. The Poincaré dual of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces in the moduli space of super Riemann surfaces plays an important role.

Superconformal Indices, Sasaki-Einstein Manifolds, and Cyclic Homologies

The superconformal index of the quiver gauge theory dual to type IIB string theory on the product of an arbitrary smooth Sasaki-Einstein manifold with five-dimensional AdS space is calculated both from the gauge theory and gravity viewpoints. We find complete agreement. Along the way, we find that the index on the gravity side can be expressed in terms of the Kohn-Rossi cohomology of the Sasaki-Einstein manifold and that the index of a quiver gauge theory equals the Euler characteristic of the cyclic homology of the Ginzburg dg algebra associated to the quiver.

Gaiotto Duality for the Twisted A_{2N-1} Series

We study 4D N=2 superconformal theories that arise from the compactification of 6D N=(2,0) theories of type A_{2N-1} on a Riemann surface C, in the presence of punctures twisted by a Z_2 outer automorphism. We describe how to do a complete classification of these SCFTs in terms of three-punctured spheres and cylinders, which we do explicitly for A_3, and provide tables of properties of twisted defects up through A_9. We find atypical degenerations of Riemann surfaces that do not lead to weakly-coupled gauge groups, but to a gauge coupling pinned at a point in the interior of moduli space. As applications, we study: i) 6D representations of 4D superconformal quivers in the shape of an affine/non-affine D_n Dynkin diagram, ii) S-duality of SU(4) and Sp(2) gauge theories with various combinations of fundamental and antisymmetric matter, and iii) realizations of all rank-one SCFTs predicted by Argyres and Wittig.

Nilpotent orbits and codimension-two defects of 6d N=(2,0) theories

We study the local properties of a class of codimension-2 defects of the 6d N=(2,0) theories of type J=A,D,E labeled by nilpotent orbits of a Lie algebra \mathfrak{g}, where \mathfrak{g} is determined by J and the outer-automorphism twist around the defect. This class is a natural generalisation of the defects of the 6d theory of type SU(N) labeled by a Young diagram with N boxes. For any of these defects, we determine its contribution to the dimension of the Higgs branch, to the Coulomb branch operators and their scaling dimensions, to the 4d central charges a and c, and to the flavour central charge k.

Quantum Higgs branches of isolated N=2 superconformal field theories

We study the Higgs branches of the superconformal points of four-dimensional N=2 super Yang-Mills (SYM) which appear due to the occurrence of mutually local monopoles having appropriate charges. We show, for example, that the maximal superconformal point of SU(2n) SYM has a Higgs branch of the form C^2/Z_n. These Higgs branches are intrinsic to the superconformal field theory (SCFT) at the superconformal point, but do not appear in the SYM theory in which it is embedded. This is because the embedding is a UV extension of the SCFT in which some global symmetry acting on the Higgs branch is gauged irrelevantly. Higgs branches deduced from earlier direct studies of these isolated SCFTs using BPS wall-crossing or 3-d mirror symmetry agree with the ones we find here using just the Seiberg-Witten data for the SYM theories.

3d Partition Function as Overlap of Wavefunctions

We compute the partition function on S^3 of 3d N=4 theories which arise as the low-energy limit of 4d N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on a segment or on a junction, and propose its 1d interpretation. We show that the partition function can be written as an overlap of wavefunctions determined by the boundary conditions. We also comment on the connection of our results with the 4d superconformal index and the 2d q-deformed Yang-Mills theory.

A strange relationship between 2d CFT and 4d gauge theory

A relationship between 4d gauge theory and 2d CFT will be reviewed from the very basics. We will first cover the introductory material on the 2d CFT and on the instantons of 4d gauge theory. Next we will explicitly calculate and check the agreement of the norm of a coherent state on the 2d side and the instanton partition function on the 4d side. We will then see how this agreement can be understood from the perspective of string and M theory.

Instanton counting with a surface operator and the chain-saw quiver

We describe the moduli space of SU(N) instantons in the presence of a general surface operator of type N=n_1+ ... +n_M in terms of the representations of the so-called chain-saw quiver, which allows us to write down the instanton partition function as a summation over the fixed point contributions labeled by Young diagrams. We find that the instanton partition function depends on the ordering of n_I which fixes a choice of the parabolic structure. This is in accord with the fact that the Verma module of the W-algebra also depends on the ordering of n_I. By explicit calculations, we check that the partition function agrees with the norm of a coherent state in the corresponding Verma module.

On 2d TQFTs whose values are holomorphic symplectic varieties

For simple and simply-connected complex algebraic group G, we conjecture the existence of a functor eta_G from the category of 2-bordisms to the category of holomorphic symplectic varieties with Hamiltonian action, such that gluing of boundaries corresponds to the holomorphic symplectic quotient with respect to the diagonal action of G. We describe various properties of eta_G obtained via string-theoretic analysis. Mathematicians are urged to construct eta_G rigorously.

On 6d N=(2,0) theory compactified on a Riemann surface with finite area

We study 6d N=(2,0) theory of type SU(N) compactified on Riemann surfaces with finite area, including spheres with fewer than three punctures. The Higgs branch, whose metric is inversely proportional to the total area of the Riemann surface, is discussed in detail. We show that the zero-area limit, which gives us a genuine 4d theory, can involve a Wigner-Inonu contraction of global symmetries of the six-dimensional theory. We show how this explains why subgroups of SU(N) can appear as the gauge group in the 4d limit. As a by-product we suggest that half-BPS codimension-two defects in the six-dimensional (2,0) theory have an operator product expansion whose operator product coefficients are four-dimensional field theories.

On S-duality of 5d super Yang-Mills on S^1

We study a duality of 5d maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills on S^1, which exchanges the tower of Kaluza-Klein W-bosons and the tower of instantonic monopoles. This duality maps a non-simply-laced gauge theory to a simply-laced gauge theory twisted by an outer automorphism around S^1, and is closely related to the Langlands dual of affine Lie algebras. We also discuss how this S-duality is implemented in terms of 6d N=(2,0) theory. This is straightforward except for the 6d theory of type SU(2n+1) with Z_2 outer-automorphism twist, for which a few new properties are deduced. For example, this 6d theory, when reduced on an S^1 with Z_2 twist, gives 5d USp(2n) theory with nontrivial discrete 5d theta angle.

On W-algebras and the symmetries of defects of 6d N=(2,0) theory

We consider 6d N=(2,0) theory on N M5-branes, together with a 4d defect labeled by a Young diagram Y specifying its global symmetry G_Y. A recent conjecture states that a compactification of this system leads to a 2d theory with W-algebra symmetry depending on Y. We provide a check of the conjecture by reproducing the level of the current subalgebra \hat{G}_Y of this W-algebra from the property of the 4d defect.

Para-Liouville/Toda central charges from M5-branes

We propose that N M5-branes, put on R^4/Z_m with deformation parameters epsilon_{1,2}, realize two-dimensional theory with SU(m)_N symmetry and m-th para-W_N symmetry. This includes the standard W_N symmetry for m=1 and super-Viraroro symmetry for m=N=2. We provide a small check of this proposal by calculating the central charge of the 2d theory from the anomaly polynomial of the 6d theory.

Seiberg-Witten Geometries Revisited

We provide a uniform solution to 4d N=2 gauge theory with a single gauge group G=A,D,E when the one-loop contribution to the beta function from any irreducible component R of the hypermultiplets is less than or equal to half of that of the adjoint representation. The solution is given by a non-compact Calabi-Yau geometry, whose defining equation is built from explicitly known polynomials W_G and X_R, associated respectively to the gauge group G and each irreducible component R. We provide many pieces of supporting evidence, for example by analyzing the system from the point of view of the 6d N=(2,0) theory compactified on a sphere.

Affine SL(2) conformal blocks from 4d gauge theories

We study Nekrasov's instanton partition function of four-dimensional N=2 gauge theories in the presence of surface operators. This can be computed order by order in the instanton expansion by using results available in the mathematical literature. Focusing in the case of SU(2) quiver gauge theories, we find that the results agree with a modified version of the conformal blocks of affine SL(2) Lie algebra. These conformal blocks provide, in the critical limit, the eigenfunctions of the corresponding quantized Hitchin Hamiltonians.

Comments on scaling limits of 4d N=2 theories

We revisit the study of the maximally singular point in the Coulomb branch of 4d N=2 SU(N) gauge theory with N_f=2n flavors for N_f<2N. When n >= 2, we find that the low-energy physics is described by two non-trivial superconformal field theories coupled to a magnetic SU(2) gauge group which is infrared free. (In the special case n=2, one of these theories is a theory of free hypermultiplets.) This observation removes a possible counter example to a conjectured a-theorem.

Exactly Marginal Deformations and Global Symmetries

We study the problem of finding exactly marginal deformations of N=1 superconformal field theories in four dimensions. We find that the only way a marginal chiral operator can become not exactly marginal is for it to combine with a conserved current multiplet. Additionally, we find that the space of exactly marginal deformations, also called the "conformal manifold," is the quotient of the space of marginal couplings by the complexified continuous global symmetry group. This fact explains why exactly marginal deformations are ubiquitous in N=1 theories. Our method turns the problem of enumerating exactly marginal operators into a problem in group theory, and substantially extends and simplifies the previous analysis by Leigh and Strassler. We also briefly discuss how to apply our analysis to N=2 theories in three dimensions.

Loop and surface operators in N=2 gauge theory and Liouville modular geometry

Recently, a duality between Liouville theory and four dimensional N=2 gauge theory has been uncovered by some of the authors. We consider the role of extended objects in gauge theory, surface operators and line operators, under this correspondence. We map such objects to specific operators in Liouville theory. We employ this connection to compute the expectation value of general supersymmetric 't Hooft-Wilson line operators in a variety of N=2 gauge theories.

Mirrors of 3d Sicilian theories

We consider the compactification of the 6d N=(2,0) theories, or equivalently of M-theory 5-branes, on a punctured Riemann surface times a circle. This gives rise to what we call 3d N=4 Sicilian theories, and we find that their mirror theories are star-shaped quiver gauge theories. We also discuss an alternative construction of these 3d theories through 4d N=4 SYM on a graph, which allows us to obtain the 3d mirror via 4d S-duality.

N = 1 SCFTs from Brane Monodromy

We present evidence for a new class of strongly coupled N = 1 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) motivated by F-theory GUT constructions. These SCFTs arise from D3-brane probes of tilted seven-branes which undergo monodromy. In the probe theory, this tilting corresponds to an N = 1 deformation of an N = 2 SCFT by a matrix of field-dependent masses with non-trivial branch cuts in the eigenvalues. Though these eigenvalues characterize the geometry, we find that they do not uniquely specify the holomorphic data of the physical theory. We also comment on some phenomenological aspects of how these theories can couple to the visible sector. Our construction can be applied to many N = 2 SCFTs, resulting in a large new class of N = 1 SCFTs.

N=2 gauge theories and degenerate fields of Toda theory

We discuss the correspondence between degenerate fields of the W_N algebra and punctures of Gaiotto's description of the Seiberg-Witten curve of N=2 superconformal gauge theories. Namely, we find that the type of degenerate fields of the W_N algebra, with null states at level one, is classified by Young diagrams with N boxes, and that the singular behavior of the Seiberg-Witten curve near the puncture agrees with that of W_N generators. We also find how to translate mass parameters of the gauge theory to the momenta of the Toda theory.

N=2 S-duality via Outer-automorphism Twists

Compactification of 6d N=(2,0) theory of type G on a punctured Riemann surface has been effectively used to understand S-dualities of 4d N=2 theories. We can further introduce branch cuts on the Riemann surface across which the worldvolume fields are transformed by the discrete symmetries associated to those of the Dynkin diagram of type G. This allows us to generate more S-dualities, and in particular to reproduce a couple of S-dual pairs found previously by Argyres and Wittig.

Sicilian gauge theories and N=1 dualities

In theories without known Lagrangian descriptions, knowledge of the global symmetries is often one of the few pieces of information we have at our disposal. Gauging (part of) such global symmetries can then lead to interesting new theories, which are usually still quite mysterious. In this work, we describe a set of tools that can be used to explore the superconformal phases of these theories. In particular, we describe the contribution of such non-Lagrangian sectors to the NSVZ beta-function, and elucidate the counting of marginal deformations. We apply our techniques to N=1 theories obtained by mass deformations of the N=2 conformal theories recently found by Gaiotto. Because the basic building block of these theories is a triskelion, or trivalent vertex, we dub them "Sicilian gauge theories." We identify these N=1 theories as compactifications of the six-dimensional A_N (2,0) theory on Riemann surfaces with punctures and SU(2) Wilson lines. These theories include the holographic duals of the N=1 supergravity solutions found by Maldacena and Nunez.

Argyres-Seiberg duality and the Higgs branch

We demonstrate the agreement between the Higgs branches of two N=2 theories proposed by Argyres and Seiberg to be S-dual, namely the SU(3) gauge theory with six quarks, and the SU(2) gauge theory with one pair of quarks coupled to the superconformal theory with E_6 flavor symmetry. In mathematical terms, we demonstrate the equivalence between a hyperkaehler quotient of a linear space and another hyperkaehler quotient involving the minimal nilpotent orbit of E_6, modulo the identification of the twistor lines.

Comments on Galilean conformal field theories and their geometric realization

We discuss non-relativistic conformal algebras generalizing the Schrödinger algebra. One instance of these algebras is a conformal, acceleration-extended, Galilei algebra, which arises also as a contraction of the relativistic conformal algebra. In two dimensions, this admits an "exotic" central extension, whereby boosts do not commute. We study general properties of non-relativistic conformal field theories with such symmetry. We realize geometrically the symmetry in terms of a metric invariant under the exotic conformal Galilei algebra, although its signature is neither Lorentzian nor Euclidean. We comment on holographic-type calculations in this background.

Central charges of N=2 superconformal field theories in four dimensions

We present a general method for computing the central charges a and c of N=2 superconformal field theories corresponding to singular points in the moduli space of N=2 gauge theories. Our method relates a and c to the U(1)_R anomalies of the topologically twisted gauge theory. We evaluate these anomalies by studying the holomorphic dependence of the path integral measure on the moduli. We calculate a and c for superconformal points in a variety of gauge theories, including N=4 SU(N), N=2 pure SU(N) Yang-Mills, and USp(2N) with 1 massless antisymmetric and 4 massive fundamental hypermultiplets. In the latter case, we reproduce the conformal and flavor central charges previously calculated using the gravity duals of these gauge theories. For any SCFT in the class under consideration, we derive a previously conjectured expression for 2a-c in terms of the sum of the dimensions of operators parameterizing the Coulomb branch. Finally, we prove that the ratio a/c is bounded above by 5/4 and below by 1/2.

Classification of N=6 superconformal theories of ABJM type

Studying the supersymmetry enhancement mechanism of Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena, we find a simple condition on the gauge group generators for the matter fields. We analyze all possible compact Lie groups and their representations. The only allowed gauge groups leading to the manifest N=6 supersymmetry are, up to discrete quotients, SU(n) x U(1), Sp(n) x U(1), SU(n) x SU(n), and SU(n) x SU(m) x U(1) with possibly additional U(1)'s. Matter representations are restricted to be the (bi)fundamentals. As a byproduct we obtain another proof of the complete classification of the three algebras considered by Bagger and Lambert.

Comments on string theory backgrounds with non-relativistic conformal symmetry

We consider non-relativistic conformal quantum mechanical theories that arise by doing discrete light cone quantization of field theories. If the field theory has a gravity dual, then the conformal quantum mechanical theory can have a gravity dual description in a suitable finite temperature and finite density regime. Using this we compute the thermodynamic properties of the system. We give an explicit example where we display both the conformal quantum mechanical theory as well as the gravity dual. We also discuss the string theory embedding of certain backgrounds with non-relativistic conformal symmetry that were recently discussed. Using this, we construct finite temperature and finite density solutions, with asymptotic non-relativistic conformal symmetry. In addition, we derive consistent Kaluza-Klein truncations of type IIB supergravity to a five dimensional theory with massive vector fields.

A-D-E Quivers and Baryonic Operators

We study baryonic operators of the gauge theory on multiple D3-branes at the tip of the conifold orbifolded by a discrete subgroup Gamma of SU(2). The string theory analysis predicts that the number and the order of the fixed points of Gamma acting on S^2 are directly reflected in the spectrum of baryonic operators on the corresponding quiver gauge theory constructed from two Dynkin diagrams of the corresponding type. We confirm the prediction by developing techniques to enumerate baryonic operators of the quiver gauge theory which includes the gauge groups with different ranks. We also find that the Seiberg dualities act on the baryonic operators in a non-Abelian fashion.

Five-dimensional Supergravity Dual of a-Maximization

We study the five-dimensional supergravity dual of the a-maximization under AdS5/CFT4 duality. We firstly show that the a-maximization is mapped to the attractor equation in five-dimensional gauged supergravity, and that the trial a-function is the inverse cube of the superpotential of the five-dimensional theory. There is also a version of a-maximization in which one extremizes over Lagrange multipliers enforcing the anomaly-free condition of the R-symmetry. We identify the supergravity dual of this procedure, and show how the Lagrange multipliers appearing in the supergravity description naturally correspond to the gauge coupling of the superconformal field theory.

Pouliot Type Duality via a-Maximization

We study four-dimensional N=1 Spin(10) gauge theory with a single spinor and vectors at the superconformal fixed point via the electric-magnetic duality and a-maximization. When gauge invariant chiral primary operators hit the unitarity bounds, we find that the theory with no superpotential is identical to the one with some superpotential at the infrared fixed point. The auxiliary field method in the electric theory offers a satisfying description of the infrared fixed point, which is consistent with the better picture in the magnetic theory. In particular, it gives a clear description of the emergence of new massless degrees of freedom in the electric theory.

Supergravity Analysis of Hybrid Inflation Model from D3--D7 System

The slow-roll inflation is a beautiful paradigm, yet the inflaton potential can hardly be sufficiently flat when unknown gravitational effects are taken into account. However, the hybrid inflation models constructed in D = 4 N = 1 supergravity can be consistent with N = 2 supersymmetry, and can be naturally embedded into string theory. This article discusses the gravitational effects carefully in the string model, using D = 4 supergravity description. We adopt the D3--D7 system of Type IIB string theory compactified on K3 x T^2/Z_2 orientifold for definiteness. It turns out that the slow-roll parameter can be sufficiently small despite the non-minimal Kahler potential of the model. The conditions for this to happen are clarified in terms of string vacua. We also find that the geometry obtained by blowing up singularity, which is necessary for the positive vacuum energy, is stabilized by introducing certain 3-form fluxes.

Derivation of the Konishi anomaly relation from Dijkgraaf-Vafa with (Bi-)fundamental matters

We explicitly write down the Feynman rules following the work of Dijkfraaf, Vafa and collaborators for N=1 super Yang-Mills having products of SU groups as the gauge group and matter chiral superfields in adjoint, fundamental, and bi-fundamental representations without baryonic perturbations. As an application of this, we show expectation values calculated by these methods satisfy the Konishi anomaly relation.
