Cosmic strings from pure Yang-Mills theory

We discuss the formation of cosmic strings or macroscopic color flux tubes at the phase transition from the deconfinement to confinement phase in pure Yang-Mills (YM) theory, such as SU($N$), Sp($N$), SO($N$), and Spin($N$), based on the current understanding of theoretical physics. According to the holographic dual descriptions, the cosmic strings are dual to fundamental strings or wrapped D-branes in the gravity side depending on the structure of the gauge group, and the reconnection probability is suppressed by $\mathcal{O}(N^{-2})$ and $e^{-\mathcal{O}(N)}$, respectively. The pure YM theory thus provides a simple realization of cosmic F- and D-strings without the need for a brane-inflationary scenario or extra dimension. We also review the stability of cosmic strings based on the concept of 1-form symmetry, which further implies the existence of a baryon vertex in some YM theory. We calculate the gravitational wave spectrum that is emitted from the cosmic strings based on an extended velocity-dependent one-scale model and discuss its detectability based on ongoing and planned gravitational-wave experiments. In particular, the SKA and LISA can observe gravitational signals if the confinement scale is higher than $\mathcal{O}(10^{12})\,\mathrm{GeV}$ and $\mathcal{O}(10^{10})\,\mathrm{GeV}$ for SU($N$) with $N = \mathcal{O}(1)$, respectively.

Global anomalies in 8d supergravity

We study gauge and gravitational anomalies of fermions and 2-form fields on eight-dimensional spin manifolds. Possible global gauge anomalies are classified by spin bordism groups $Ω^{\text{spin}}_9(BG)$ which we determine by spectral sequence techniques, and we also identify their explicit generator manifolds. It turns out that a fermion in the adjoint representation of any simple Lie group, and a gravitino in $8d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity theory, have anomalies. We discuss how a 2-form field, which also appears in supergravity, produces anomalies which cancel against these fermion anomalies in a certain class of supergravity theories. In another class of theories, the anomaly of the gravitino is not cancelled by the 2-form field, but by topological degrees of freedom. It gives a restriction on the topology of spacetime manifolds which is not visible at the level of differential-form analysis.

Anomaly Inflow and the $η$-Invariant

Perturbative fermion anomalies in spacetime dimension $d$ have a well-known relation to Chern-Simons functions in dimension $D=d+1$. This relationship is manifested in a beautiful way in "anomaly inflow" from the bulk of a system to its boundary. Along with perturbative anomalies, fermions also have global or nonperturbative anomalies, which can be incorporated by using the $η$-invariant of Atiyah, Patodi, and Singer instead of the Chern-Simons function. Here we give a nonperturbative description of anomaly inflow, involving the $η$-invariant. This formula has been expected in the past based on the Dai-Freed theorem, but has not been fully justified. It leads to a general description of perturbative and nonperturbative fermion anomalies in $d$ dimensions in terms of an $η$-invariant in $D$ dimensions. This $η$-invariant is a cobordism invariant whenever perturbative anomalies cancel.

Confinement as Analytic Continuation Beyond Infinity

We propose a mechanism for confinement: analytic continuation beyond infinite coupling in the space of the coupling constant. The analytic continuation is realized by renormalization group flows from the weak to the strong coupling regime. We demonstrate this mechanism explicitly for the mass gap in two-dimensional sigma models in the large $N$ limit. Our analysis suggests that the conventional analysis of the operator product expansion in itself does not necessarily guarantee the existence of a classical solution corresponding to renormalons. We discuss how the renormalon puzzle may be resolved by the analytic continuation beyond infinite coupling.

Witten effect, anomaly inflow, and charge teleportation

We study a phenomenon that electric charges are "teleported" between two spatially separated objects without exchanging charged particles at all. For example, this phenomenon happens between a magnetic monopole and an axion string in four dimensions, two vortices in three dimensions, and two M5-branes in M-theory in which M2-charges are teleported. This is realized by anomaly inflow into these objects in the presence of cubic Chern-Simons terms. In particular, the Witten effect on magnetic monopoles can be understood as a general consequence of anomaly inflow, which implies that some anomalous quantum mechanics must live on them. Charge violation occurs in the anomalous theories living on these objects, but it happens in such a way that the total charge is conserved between the two spatially separated objects. We derive a formula for the amount of the charge which is teleported between the two objects in terms of the linking number of their world volumes in spacetime.

A search for minimal 4d N=1 SCFT

We discuss a candidate for a minimal interacting 4-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theory (SCFT). The model contains a chiral primary operator u satisfying the chiral ring relation u^2=0, and its scaling dimension is Δ(u)=1.5. The model is derived by turning on a N=1 preserving deformation of N=2 A2 Argyres-Douglas theory. The central charges are given by (a,c)=(263/768, 271/768) ~ (0.342,0.353). There is no moduli space of vacua, no flavor symmetry, and the chiral ring is finite.

Dai-Freed theorem and topological phases of matter

We describe a physics derivation of theorems due to Dai and Freed about the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer eta-invariant which is important for anomalies and topological phases of matter. This is done by studying a massive fermion. The key role is played by the wave function of the ground state in the Hilbert space of the fermion in the large mass limit. The ground state takes values in the determinant line bundle and has nontrivial Berry phases which characterize the low energy topological phases.

Diphoton Excess as a Hidden Monopole

We provide a theory with a monopole of a strongly-interacting hidden U(1) gauge symmetry that can explain the 750-GeV diphoton excess reported by ATLAS and CMS. The excess results from the resonance of monopole, which is produced via gluon fusion and decays into two photons. In the low energy, there are only mesons and a monopole in our model because any baryons cannot be gauge invariant in terms of strongly interacting Abelian symmetry. This is advantageous of our model because there is no unwanted relics around the BBN epoch.

Gauge interactions and topological phases of matter

We initiate the study of the effects of strongly-coupled gauge interactions on the properties of the topological phases of matter. In particular, we discuss fermionic systems with three spatial dimensions, protected by time reversal symmetry. We first derive a sufficient condition for the introduction of a dynamical Yang-Mills field to preserve the topological phase of matter, and then show how the massless pions capture in the infrared the topological properties of the fermions in the ultraviolet. Finally, we use the S-duality of ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetric $SU(2)$ gauge theory with $N_f{=}4$ flavors to show that the $ν{=}16$ phase of Majorana fermions can be continuously connected to the trivial $ν{=}0$ phase.

6d $\mathcal{N}{=}(1,0)$ theories on $S^1/T^2$ and class S theories: part II

We study the $T^2$ compactification of a class of 6d $\mathcal{N}{=}(1,0)$ theories that is Higgsable to $\mathcal{N}{=}(2,0)$ theories. We show that the resulting 4d $\mathcal{N}{=}2$ theory at the origin of the Coulomb branch and the parameter space is generically given by two superconformal matter sectors coupled by an infrared-free gauge multiplet and another conformal gauge multiplet. Our analysis utilizes the 5d theories obtained by putting the same class of 6d theories on $S^1$. Our class includes, among others, the 6d theories describing multiple M5 branes on an ALE singularity, and we analyze them in detail. The resulting 4d theory has manifestly both the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ and the full flavor symmetry. We also discuss in detail the special cases of 6d theories where the infrared-free gauge multiplet is absent. In an appendix, we give a field-theoretical argument for an F-theoretic constraint that forbids a particular 6d anomaly-free matter content, as an application of our analysis.

6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ theories on $T^2$ and class S theories: part I

We show that the $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ superconformal theory on a single M5 brane on the ALE space of type $G=A_n, D_n, E_n$, when compactified on $T^2$, becomes a class S theory of type $G$ on a sphere with two full punctures and a simple puncture. We study this relation from various viewpoints. Along the way, we develop a new method to study the 4d SCFT arising from the $T^2$ compactification of a class of 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ theories we call very Higgsable.

Cosmologically safe QCD axion without fine-tuning

Although QCD axion models are widely studied as solutions to the strong CP problem, they generically confront severe fine-tuning problems to guarantee the anomalous PQ symmetry. In this letter, we propose a simple QCD axion model without any fine-tunings. We introduce an extra dimension and a pair of extra quarks living on two branes separately, which is also charged under a bulk Abelian gauge symmetry. We assume a monopole condensation on our brane at an intermediate scale, which implies that the extra quarks develop the chiral symmetry breaking and the PQ symmetry is broken. In contrast to the original Kim's model, our model explains the origin of the PQ symmetry thanks to the extra dimension and avoids the cosmological domain wall problem because of the chiral symmetry breaking in the Abelian gauge theory.

Instanton operators and symmetry enhancement in 5d supersymmetric quiver gauge theories

We consider general 5d $SU(N)$ quiver gauge theories whose nodes form an ADE Dynkin diagram of type $G$. Each node has $SU(N_i)$ gauge group of general rank, Chern-Simons level $κ_i$ and additional $w_i$ fundamentals. When the total flavor number at each node is less than or equal to $2N_i-2|κ_i|$, we give general rules under which the symmetries associated to instanton currents are enhanced to $G \times G$ or a subgroup of it in the UV 5d superconformal theory. When the total flavor number violates that condition at some of the nodes, further enhancement of flavor symmetries occurs. In particular we find a large class of gauge theories interpreted as $S^1$ compactification of 6d superconformal theories which are waiting for string/F-theory realization. We also consider hypermultiplets in (anti-)symmetric representation.

Anomaly polynomial of general 6d SCFTs

We describe a method to determine the anomaly polynomials of general 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs, in terms of the anomaly matching on their tensor branches. This method is almost purely field theoretical, and can be applied to all known 6d SCFTs. We demonstrate our method in many concrete examples, including $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theories of arbitrary type and the theories on M5 branes on ALE singularities, reproducing the $N^3$ behavior. We check the results against the anomaly polynomials computed M-theoretically via the anomaly inflow.

Generalized Hitchin system, Spectral curve and N=1 dynamics

A generalized Hitchin equation was proposed as the BPS equation for a large class of four dimensional N=1 theories engineered using M5 branes. In this paper, we show how to write down the spectral curve for the moduli space of generalized Hitchin equations, and extract interesting N=1 dynamics out of it, such as deformed modui space, chiral ring relation, SUSY breaking, etc. Holomorphy plays a crucial role in our construction.

Mass-deformed $T_N$ as a linear quiver

The $T_N$ theory is a non-Lagrangian theory with SU(N) flavor symmetry. We argue that when mass terms are given so that two of SU(N)'s are both broken to SU(N-1) x U(1), it becomes $T_{N-1}$ theory coupled to an SU(N-1) vector multiplet together with N fundamentals. This implies that when two of SU(N)'s are both broken to U(1)$^{N-1}$, the theory becomes a linear quiver. We perform various checks of this statement, by using the 5d partition function, the structure of the coupling constants, the Higgs branch, and the Seiberg-Witten curve. We also study the case with more general punctures.

Notes on natural inflation

In the so-called natural inflation, an axion-like inflaton is assumed to have a cosine-type periodic potential. This is not the case in a very simple model in which the axion-like inflaton is coupled to an SU(N) (or other) pure Yang-Mills, at least in the large N limit as pointed out by Witten. It has a multi-valued potential, which is effectively quadratic, i.e., there is only a mass term in the large N limit. Thanks to this property, chaotic inflation can be realized more naturally with the decay constant of the axion-like inflaton less than the Planck scale. We demonstrate these points explicitly by using softly broken ${\mathcal N}=1$ Super-Yang-Mills which allows us to treat finite N. This analysis also suggests that moderately large gauge groups such as $E_{8}$ are good enough with a Planck scale decay constant.

Supersymmetric gauge theory, (2,0) theory and twisted 5d Super-Yang-Mills

Twisted compactification of the 6d N=(2,0) theories on a punctured Riemann surface give a large class of 4d N=1 and N=2 gauge theories, called class S. We argue that nonperturbative dynamics of class S theories are described by 5d maximal Super-Yang-Mills (SYM) twisted on the Riemann surface. In a sense, twisted 5d SYM might be regarded as a "Lagrangian" for class S theories on R^{1,2} times S^1. First, we show that twisted 5d SYM gives generalized Hitchin's equations which was proposed recently. Then, we discuss how to identify chiral operators with quantities in twisted 5d SYM. Mesons, or holomorphic moment maps, are identified with operators at punctures which are realized as 3d superconformal theories T_rho[G] coupled to twisted 5d SYM. "Baryons" are identified qualitatively through a study of 4d N=2 Higgs branches. We also derive a simple formula for dynamical superpotential vev which is relevant for BPS domain wall tensions. With these tools, we examine many examples of 4d N=1 theories with several phases such as confining, Higgs, and Coulomb phases, and show perfect agreements between field theories and twisted 5d SYM. Spectral curve is an essential tool to solve generalized Hitchin's equations, and our results clarify the physical information encoded in the curve.

The moduli space of vacua of N=2 class S theories

We develop a systematic method to describe the moduli space of vacua of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ class ${\cal S}$ theories including Coulomb branch, Higgs branch and mixed branches. In particular, we determine the Higgs and mixed branch roots, and the dimensions of the Coulomb and Higgs components of mixed branches. They are derived by using generalized Hitchin's equations obtained from twisted compactification of 5d maximal Super-Yang-Mills, with local degrees of freedom at punctures given by (nilpotent) orbits. The crucial thing is the holomorphic factorization of the Seiberg-Witten curve and reduction of singularity at punctures. We illustrate our method by many examples including ${\mathcal N}=2$ SQCD, $T_N$ theory and Argyres-Douglas theories.

Unitarity, Locality, and Scale versus Conformal Invariance in Four Dimensions

In four dimensional unitary scale invariant theories, arguments based on the proof of the a-theorem suggest that the trace of the energy-momentum tensor T vanishes when the momentum is light-like, p^2=0. We show that there exists a local operator O such that the trace is given as T=\partial^2 O, which establishes the equivalence of scale and conformal invariance. We define the operator as O=\partial^{-2} T, and explain why this is a well-defined local operator. Our argument is based on the assumptions that: (1) A kind of crossing symmetry for vanishing matrix elements holds regardless of the existence of the S-matrix. (2) Correlation functions in momentum space are analytic functions other than singularities and branch cuts coming from on-shell processes. (3) The Wightman axioms are sufficient criteria of the locality of an operator.

N=1 dynamics with T_N theory

We study the dynamics of N=1 supersymmetric systems consisting of the strongly-coupled superconformal theory T_N, SU(N) gauge groups, and fundamental chiral multiplets. We demonstrate that such systems exhibit familiar phenomena such as deformation of the vacuum moduli space, appearance of the dynamical superpotential, and Coulomb branches with N=1 Seiberg-Witten curves. The analysis requires a rather detailed knowledge of the chiral ring of the T_N theory, which will also be discussed at length.

On RG Flow of tau_{RR} for Supersymmetric Field Theories in Three-Dimensions

The coefficient tau_{RR} of the two-point function of the superconformal U(1)_R currents of N=2 SCFTs in three-dimensions is recently shown to be obtained by differentiating the partition function on a squashed three-sphere with respect to the squashing parameter. With this method, we compute the tau_{RR} for N=2 Wess-Zumino models and SQCD numerically for small number of flavors and analytically in the large number limit. We study the behavior of tau_{RR} under an RG flow by adding superpotentials to the theories. While the tau_{RR} decreases for the gauge theories, we find an N=2 Wess-Zumino model whose tau_{RR} increases along the RG flow. Since tau_{RR} is proportional to the coefficient C_T of the two-point correlation function of the stress-energy tensors for N=2 superconformal field theories, this rules out the possibility of C_T being a measure of the degrees of freedom which monotonically decreases along RG flows in three-dimensions.

Higgs Boson Mass in Low Scale Gauge Mediation Models

We consider low scale gauge mediation models with a very light gravitino m_{3/2}~16 eV, in the light of recent experimental hints on the Higgs boson mass. The light gravitino is very interesting since there is no gravitino over-production problem, but it seems difficult to explain the Higgs boson mass of ~125 GeV. This is because of the conflict between the light gravitino mass and heavy SUSY particle masses needed for producing the relatively heavy Higgs boson mass. We consider two possible extensions in this paper: a singlet extension of the Higgs sector, and strongly coupled gauge mediation. We show that there is a large parameter space, in both scenarios, where the Higgs boson mass of ~125 GeV is explained without any conflict with such a very light gravitino.

Naive Dimensional Analysis in Holography

Naive dimensional analysis (NDA) is a widely used ansatz to estimate coupling constants among composite states emerging from dynamics of a strongly coupled gauge theory. However, the validity of NDA is still unclear because of the difficulty in calculating these quantities in strongly coupled theories. We examine the NDA ansatz using gauge/string duality, by estimating glueball coupling constants from gravitational description. The NDA scaling rule for coupling constants of some types of glueballs is verified and extended by both generic estimation and numerical calculations. The scaling rule verified in this article can be applied to some class of quiver gauge theories as well, not just to gauge theories with a single gauge group $SU(N_c)$.

On the Trace Anomaly and the Anomaly Puzzle in N=1 Pure Yang-Mills

The trace anomaly of the energy-momentum tensor is usually quoted in the form which is proportional to the beta function of the theory. However, there are in general many definitions of gauge couplings depending on renormalization schemes, and hence many beta functions. In particular, N=1 supersymmetric pure Yang-Mills has the holomorphic gauge coupling whose beta function is one-loop exact, and the canonical gauge coupling whose beta function is given by the Novikov-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov beta function. In this paper, we study which beta function should appear in the trace anomaly in N=1 pure Yang-Mills. We calculate the trace anomaly by employing the N=4 regularization of N=1 pure Yang-Mills. It is shown that the trace anomaly is given by one-loop exact form if the composite operator appearing in the trace anomaly is renormalized in a preferred way. This result gives the simplest resolution to the anomaly puzzle in N=1 pure Yang-Mills. The most important point is to examine in which scheme the quantum action principle is valid, which is crucial in the derivation of the trace anomaly.

A Possible Interpretation of CDF Dijet Mass Anomaly and its Realization in Supersymmetry

Recently, the CDF collaboration reports an anomaly in dijet mass distribution in association with a lepton and missing energy. We discuss a possibility that the origin of the lepton and missing energy comes not from a W boson but a new boson particle, which is also responsible for the dijet mass peak. We show that such a situation can be realized in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model and the dijet anomaly can be explained.

Gravitino Dark Matter and Light Gluino in an R-invariant Low Scale Gauge Mediation

We consider the simplest class of the R-invariant gauge mediation model with the gravitino mass in the one to ten keV range. We show that the entropy production from the supersymmetry breaking sector makes the gravitino into a warm dark matter candidate. We also discuss that the gluino mass can be lighter than the wino mass even when the messenger sector satisfies the GUT relations at the GUT scale.

Relaxing the Higgs mass bound in singlet extensions of the MSSM

We show that the upper bound on the lightest Higgs mass in the MSSM is relaxed by introducing a singlet which couples to the Higgs fields, even at a large tan beta region, preferable for explaining the muon anomalous magnetic moment. In the models of a singlet extension, it is known that the upper bound is relaxed by a tree-level contribution, especially at small tan beta region. For large tan beta, however, the requirement for the perturbativity on the singlet-Higgs coupling up to the GUT scale prevents the lightest Higgs from obtaining a large tree-level mass. We construct an explicit UV complete model which allows large singlet-Higgs coupling at low energy without disturbing the perturbativity. The UV completion can be applied for any singlet extension of the MSSM. Moreover, we point out that the radiative correction from the singlet-Higgs coupling becomes dominant, and the lightest Higgs mass can be easily as heavy as 130 GeV if this coupling is large enough even for large tan beta.

A Conformal Gauge Mediation and Dark Matter with Only One Parameter

If the supersymmetry (SUSY) is a solution to the hierarchy problem, it is puzzling that any SUSY particle has not been discovered yet. We show that there is a low-scale conformal gauge mediation model which contains all necessary ingredients, i.e. not only a SUSY-breaking dynamics and a gauge mediation mechanism, but also a candidate for the dark matter. The model has only one free parameter, that is, the mass for messengers. In this model, the dark matter is provided by a composite particle in the SUSY-breaking sector, and the observed value of the dark matter density uniquely fixes the mass of messengers at the order of 10^2 TeV. Then, the sfermion and gaugino masses are fixed to be of order 10^2~10^3 GEV without any arbitrariness, thus the SUSY particles are expected not to be discovered at the Tevatron or LEP, while having a discovery possibility at the LHC.

Aspects of Non-minimal Gauge Mediation

A large class of non-minimal gauge mediation models, such as (semi-)direct gauge mediation, predict a hierarchy between the masses of the supersymmetric standard model gauginos and those of scalar particles. We perform a comprehensive study of these non-minimal gauge mediation models, including mass calculations in semi-direct gauge mediation, to illustrate these features, and discuss the phenomenology of the models. We point out that the cosmological gravitino problem places stringent constraints on mass splittings, when the Bino is the NLSP. However, the GUT relation of the gaugino masses is broken unlike the case of minimal gauge mediation, and an NLSP other than the Bino (especially the gluino NLSP) becomes possible, relaxing the cosmological constraints. We also discuss the collider signals of the models.

Low Scale Direct Gauge Mediation with Perturbatively Stable Vacuum

In a class of direct gauge mediation with a perturbatively stable SUSY breaking vacuum, gaugino masses vanish at the leading order of SUSY breaking F-term. We study the allowed parameter space of the gauge mediation models. By imposing a Tevatron bound on the lightest chargino mass m_{{\tilde χ}^\pm_1} > 270 GeV and a warm dark-matter mass bound on the light gravitino mass m_{3/2} < 16 eV, we find that almost all the parameter space is excluded. Near future experiments may completely exclude, or possibly discover, the scenario.

Notes on Operator Equations of Supercurrent Multiplets and the Anomaly Puzzle in Supersymmetric Field Theories

Recently, Komargodski and Seiberg have proposed a new type of supercurrent multiplet which contains the energy-momentum tensor and the supersymmetry current consistently. In this paper we study quantum properties of the supercurrent in renormalizable field theories. We point out that the new supercurrent gives a quite simple resolution to the classic problem, called the anomaly puzzle, that the Adler-Bardeen theorem applied to an R-symmetry current is inconsistent with all order corrections to $β$ functions. We propose an operator equation for the supercurrent in all orders of perturbation theory, and then perform several consistency checks of the equation. The operator equation we propose is consisitent with the one proposed by Shifman and Vainshtein, if we take some care in interpreting the meaning of non-conserved currents.

Phenomenological Aspects of Gauge Mediation with Sequestered Supersymmetry Breaking in light of Dark Matter Detection

In a recent work, a model of gauge mediation with sequestered supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking was proposed. In this model, the mass of the gravitino is O(100) GeV without causing the flavor-changing neutral-current problem. In contrast to traditional gauge mediation, the gravitino is not the lightest SUSY particle and the neutralino is the candidate of the dark matter. In this paper, we investigate phenomenological aspects of this model and discuss the possibility of the direct detection of the dark matter. In particular, we focus on the light neutralino case and find that the light-Higgsino scenario such as the focus point is interesting, taking account of the recent CDMS result.

Relaxing a constraint on the number of messengers in a low-scale gauge mediation

We propose a mechanism for relaxing a constraint on the number of messengers in low-scale gauge mediation models. The Landau pole problem for the standard-model gauge coupling constants in the low-scale gauge mediation can be circumvented by using our mechanism. An essential ingredient is a large positive anomalous dimension of messenger fields given by a large Yukawa coupling in a conformal field theory at high energies. The positive anomalous dimension reduces the contribution of the messengers to the beta function of the standard-model gauge couplings.

Semi-direct Gauge Mediation in Conformal Windows of Vector-like Gauge Theories

Direct gauge mediation models using the Intriligator-Seiberg-Shih (ISS) metastable vacua suffer from the Landau pole problem of the standard model gauge couplings and the existence of R symmetry forbidding gaugino masses. These problems may be solved by using the recently proposed SUSY breaking models in a conformal window of the vector-like $SU(N_C)$ gauge theory with gauge singlets. In this paper we propose a model of gauge mediation based on the SUSY-breaking model in the conformal window, and study the dynamics for the SUSY breaking. In the model, there are massive vector-like bifundamental fields charged under both $SU(N_C)$ and the standard model gauge group, and our model can be regarded as a semi-direct gauge mediation model. The color number $N_C$ can be small to avoid the Landau pole problem, and the R symmetry is also broken under a reasonable assumption on the strong dynamics of the model. The model possesses only one free parameter, and the gaugino and sfermion masses are naturally of the same order.
