Bright-dark vector soliton solutions for the coupled complex short pulse equations in nonlinear optics

Under investigation in this paper are the coupled complex short pulse equations, which describe the propagation of ultra-short optical pulses in cubic nonlinear media.Through the Hirota method, bright-dark one- and two-soliton solutions are obtained. Interactions between two bright or two dark solitons are verified to be elastic through the asymptotic analysis. With different parameter conditions of the vector bright-dark two solitons, the oblique interactions, bound states of solitons and parallel solitons are analyzed.

Extended $s$-wave pairing symmetry on the triangular lattice heavy fermion system

We investigate the pairing symmetry of the Kondo-Heisenberg model on triangular lattice, which is believed to capture the core competition of Kondo screening and local magnetic exchange interaction in heavy electron compounds. On the dominant background of the heavy fermion state, the introduction of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic interaction ($J_H$) leads to superconducting pairing instability. Depending on the strength of the interactions, it is found that the pairing symmetry prefers an extended $s$-wave for small $J_H$ and high conduction electron density but a chiral $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$-wave for large $J_H$ and low conduction electron density, which provides a phase diagram of pairing symmetry from the calculations of the ground-state energy. The transition between these two pairing symmetries is found to be first-order. Furthermore, we also analyze the phase diagram from the pairing strengths and find that the phase diagram obtained is qualitatively consistent with that based on the ground-state energy. In addition, we propose an effective single-band BCS Hamiltonian, which is able to describe the low-energy thermodynamic behaviors of the heavy fermion superconducting states. These results further deepen the understanding of the antiferromagnetic interaction which results in a geometric frustration for the model studied. Our work may provide a possible scenario to understand the pairing symmetry of the heavy fermion superconductivity, which is the one of active issues in very recent years.

$Z_{2}$ fractionalized Chern/topological insulators in an exactly soluble correlated model

In this paper we propose an exactly soluble model in two-dimensional honeycomb lattice, from which two phases are found. One is the usual Chern/topological insulating state and the other is an interesting $Z_2$ fractionalized Chern/topological insulator. While their bulk properties are similar, the edge-states of physical electrons are quite different. The single electron excitation of the former shows a free particle-like behavior while the latter one is gapped, which provides a definite signature to identify the fractionalized states. The transition between these two phases is found to fall into the 3D Ising universal class. Significantly, near the quantum transition point the physical electron in the edge-states shows strong Luttinger liquid behavior. An extension to the interesting case of the square lattice is also made. In addition, we also discuss some relationship between our exactly soluble model and various Hubbard-like models existing in the literature. The essential difference between the proposed $Z_{2}$ fractionalized Chern insulator and the hotly pursued fractional Chern insulator is also pointed out. The present work may be helpful for further study on the fractionalized insulating phase and related novel correlated quantum phases.

Half-filled Kondo lattice on the honeycomb lattice

The unique linear density of state around the Dirac points for the honeycomb lattice brings much novel features in strongly correlated models. Here we study the ground-state phase diagram of the Kondo lattice model on the honeycomb lattice at half-filling by using an extended mean-field theory. By treating magnetic interaction and Kondo screening on an equal footing, it is found that besides a trivial discontinuous first-order quantum phase transition between well-defined Kondo insulator and antiferromagnetic insulating state, there can exist a wide coexistence region with both Kondo screening and antiferromagnetic orders in the intermediate coupling regime. In addition, the stability of Kondo insulator requires a minimum strength of the Kondo coupling. These features are attributed to the linear density of state, which are absent in the square lattice. Furthermore, fluctuation effect beyond the mean-field decoupling is analyzed and the corresponding antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave transition falls into the O(3) universal class. Comparatively, we also discuss the Kondo necklace and the Kane-Mele-Kondo (KMK) lattice models on the same lattice. Interestingly, it is found that the topological insulating state is unstable to the usual antiferromagnetic ordered states at half-filling for the KMK model. The present work may be helpful for further studies on the interplay between conduction electrons and the densely localized spins on the honeycomb lattice.

Kondo spin liquid in Kondo necklace model: Classical disordered phase versus symmetry-protected topological state

We study possible topological features of Kondo spin liquid phase in terms of the one- and two-dimensional Kondo necklace models within the frame work of quantum O(N) non-liner sigma model (NLSM). In the one-dimensional case, it is found that the bulk properties of the Kodno spin liquid phase are similar to the well-known Haldane phase at strong coupling fixed point. The difference between them mainly comes from their boundaries due to the effect of the topological term. In the two-dimensional case, the system can be mapped onto an O(4)-like NLSM with some O(3) anisotropy. Interestingly, we find that if hedgehog-like point defects are included together with the restoration of the full O(4) symmetry, our model is identical to a kind of SU(2) symmetry-protected topological (SPT) state. Additionally, if the system has the O(5) symmetry instead, the effective NLSM with Wess-Zumino-Witten term is just a description of the surface modes of a three-dimensional SPT state, though such O(5) NLSM could not be a proper description of Kondo spin liquid phase due to its gaplessness. We expect that the discussions might provide useful threads to identify certain microscopic bilayer antiferromagnet models (and related materials), which can support the desirable SPT states.

Topological antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave phase in an extended Kondo lattice model

By using an extended mean-field theory, we study the phase diagram of the topological Kondo lattice model on the honeycomb lattice at half-filling in which the conduction electrons are described by the Haldane model. Besides the well-defined Kondo insulator and normal antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave (N-SDW) state, it is found that a nontrivial topological antiferromagnetic SDW state (T-SDW) with a quantized Hall conductance is possible if the quasiparticle gap is dominated by the next-nearest-neighbor hopping rather than the antiferromagnetic order. By analyzing the low-energy effective Chern-Simon action and the corresponding chiral edge state, the T-SDW could be considered as a quantum anomalous Hall insulator with antiferromagnetic long-range order. This state is apparently beyond Landau-Ginzburg paradigm, which can be attributed to the interplay of quantum anomalous Hall effect and the subtle antiferromagnetic order in the Kondo-lattice-like model. While the transition between the SDW states and the Kondo insulator is found to be conventional (a first order transition), the transition between the N- and T-SDWs is, however, a topological quantum phase transition. Interestingly, such topological quantum phase transition can be described by Dirac fermions coupled to a U (1)Chern-Simon gauge field, which resembles the critical theory between bosonic integer quantum Hall phases and superfluid phase and also indicates that such a topological quantum phase transition may fall into the 3D-XY universal class. It is expected that the present work may shed light on the interplay between conduction electrons and the densely localized spins on the honeycomb lattice.

Topological quantum phase transition in Kane-Mele-Kondo lattice model

We systematically explore the ground-state phase diagram of the Kane-Mele-Kondo lattice model on the honeycomb lattice, in particular, we focus on its magnetic properties which has not been studied in the previous publication[Feng, Dai, Chung, and Si, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{111}, 016402 (2013)]. Beside the Kondo insulator found in that paper, two kinds of antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave phases are identified. One is the normal antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave state and the other is a nontrivial topological antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave state with a quantized spin Hall conductance and a helical edge-state. The quantum spin Hall insulator is found to be absent since it is always unstable to antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave states at least at the mean-field level in our model. Furthermore, the transition between the two spin-density-wave phases are topological quantum phase transition described by the three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics, in which conduction electrons contribute to the low-energy Dirac fermions while the spin-wave fluctuation of local spins gives rise to an effective dynamic U(1) gauge-field. Such nontrivial transition shows radical critical thermodynamic, transport and single-particle behaviors, which provide a fingerprint for this transition. Additionally, the transition of antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave states to the Kondo insulator is found to be first-order. The introduction of two novel magnetic phases and their topological quantum phase transition show rich and intrinsic physics involving in the Kane-Mele-Kondo lattice model.

Inhomogeneity of the phase space of the damped harmonic oscillator under Levy noise

The damped harmonic oscillator under symmetric Lévy white noise shows inhomogeneous phase space, which is in contrast to the homogeneous one of the same oscillator under the Gaussian white noise, as shown in a recent paper [I. M. Sokolov, W. Ebeling, and B. Dybiec, Phys. Rev. E \textbf{83}, 041118 (2011)]. The inhomogeneity of the phase space shows certain correlation between the coordinate and the velocity of the damped oscillator under symmetric Lévy white noise. In the present work we further explore the physical origin of these distinguished features and find that it is due to the combination of the damped effect and heavy tail of the noise. We demonstrate directly this in the reduced coordinate $\tilde{x}$ versus velocity $\tilde{v}$ plots and identify the physics of the anti-association of the coordinate and velocity.
