Probing The Neutrino Sector via A Statistical Approach

We apply the idea of landscape (motivated by string theory) to study the statistical nature of parameters/couplings in the standard model of strong and electroweak interactions. Following the success of this approach on the fermion masses, we discuss the divergent behavior of the probability distributions of other physical parameters/couplings to obtain some insights on the quantities that cannot be measured by current experiments but can be relevant in cosmology, in particular those in the neutrino sector. From a relatively strongly mixed PMNS matrix, we argue that the probability distribution of heavy neutrino mass $P(M)$ does not diverge at $M=0$. This analysis favors the degenerate heavy neutrino scenarios.

Linking the Supersymmetric Standard Model to the Cosmological Constant

String theory has no parameter except the string scale $M_S$, so the Planck scale $M_\text{Pl}$, the supersymmetry-breaking scale, the EW scale $m_\text{EW}$ as well as the vacuum energy density (cosmological constant) $Λ$ are to be determined dynamically at any local minimum solution in the string theory landscape. Here we consider a model that links the supersymmetric electroweak phenomenology (bottom up) to the string theory motivated flux compactification approach (top down). In this model, supersymmetry is broken by a combination of the racetrack Kähler uplift mechanism, which naturally allows an exponentially small positive $Λ$ in a local minimum, and the anti-D3-brane in the KKLT scenario. In the absence of the Higgs doublets in the supersymmetric standard model, one has either a small $Λ$ or a big enough SUSY-breaking scale, but not both. The introduction of the Higgs fields (with their soft terms) allows a small $Λ$ and a big enough SUSY-breaking scale simultaneously. Since an exponentially small $Λ$ is statistically preferred (as the properly normalized probability distribution $P(Λ)$ diverges at $Λ=0^{+}$), identifying the observed $Λ_{\rm obs}$ to the median value $Λ_{50\%}$ yields $m_{\rm EW} \sim 100$ GeV. We also find that the warped anti-D3-brane tension has a SUSY-breaking scale of $100m_{\rm EW}$ in the landscape while the SUSY-breaking scale that directly correlates with the Higgs fields in the visible sector has a value of $m_{\rm EW}$.

Standard Model from A Supergravity Model with a Naturally Small Cosmological Constant

Guided by the naturalness criterion for an exponentially small cosmological constant, we present a string theory motivated 4-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ non-linear supergravity model (or its linear version with a nilpotent superfield) with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The model encompasses the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the racetrack Kähler uplift, and the KKLT anti-$\rm D3$-branes, and use the nilpotent superfield to project out the undesirable interaction terms as well as the unwanted degrees of freedom to end up with the standard model (not the supersymmetric version) of strong and electroweak interactions.

Energy dynamics in a generalized compass chain

We investigate the energy dynamics in a generalized compass chain under an external magnetic field. We show that the energy current operators act on three contiguous sites in the absence of the magnetic field, and they are incorporated with inhomogenous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the presence of the magnetic field. These complex interactions remain the Hamiltonian be an exactly solvable spin model. We study the effects of the three-site interactions and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions on the energy spectra and phase diagram. The results have revealed that the energy current of the pristine quantum compass model is conserved due to the associated intermediate symmetries, and for other general cases such characteristic does not exist.

Quantum phase transitions in a generalized compass chain with three-site interactions

We consider a class of one-dimensional compass models with XYZ$-$YZX-type of three-site exchange interaction in an external magnetic field. We present the exact solution derived by means of Jordan-Wigner transformation, and study the excitation gap, spin correlations, and establish the phase diagram. Besides the canted antiferromagnetic and polarized phases, the three-site interactions induce two distinct chiral phases, corresponding to gapless spinless-fermion systems having two or four Fermi points. We find that the $z$ component of scalar chirality operator can act as an order parameter for these chiral phases. We also find that the thermodynamic quantities including the Wilson ratio can characterize the liquid phases. Finally, a nontrivial magnetoelectric effect is explored, and we show that the polarization can be manipulated by the magnetic field in the absence of electric field.
