Characterizing quantum criticality and steered coherence in the XY-Gamma chain

In this paper, we show that an effective spin Hamiltonian with various types of couplings can be engineered using quantum simulators in atomic-molecular-optical laboratories, dubbed the \emph{XY}-Gamma model. We analytically solve the one-dimensional short-range interacting case with the Jordan-Wigner transformation and establish the phase diagram. In the gapless phase, an incommensurate spiral order is manifested by the vector-chiral correlations. Between distinct gapped phases, a logarithmic scaling behavior of local measures, including spin correlations and the steered quantum coherence, is identified for the quantum critical points, yielding a compelling value of the correlation-length critical exponent. We derive explicit scaling forms of the excitation gap near the quantum critical points. The extracted critical exponents reveal the quantum phase transition on the boundary of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid belongs to Lifshitz universality class. Our results may provide useful insights into the underlying mechanism in quantum criticality for state-of-the-art experiments of quantum simulation.

First Principle Study of Gravitational Pressure and Thermodynamics of FRW Universe

We make a first principle study of gravitational pressure in cosmic thermodynamics. The pressure is directly derived from the unified first law, in fact the Einstein field equation in spherically symmetric spacetime. By using this pressure, we obtain the thermodynamics for the FRW universe, especially presenting the gravitational equation of state for the FRW spacetime itself, i.e. $P=P(R_A, T)$ for the first time. Furthermore, we study the Joule-Thomson expansion as an application of the thermodynamic equation of state to find the cooling-heating property of the FRW universe. We demonstrate that there is an inversion temperature for a FRW universe if its enthalpy ${\cal H}$ is negative. These investigations shed insights on the evolution of our universe in view of thermodynamics.

Long-Range Order and Quantum Criticality in Antiferromagnetic Chains with Long-Range Staggered Interactions

We study quantum phase transitions in Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with a staggered power-law decaying long-range interactions. Employing the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm and the fidelity susceptibility as the criticality measure, we establish more accurate values of quantum critical points than the results obtained from the spin-wave approximation, quantum Monte Carlo and DMRG in literatures. The deviation is especially evident for strong long-range interactions. We extend isotropic long-range interactions to the anisotropic cases and find that kaleidoscope of quantum phases emerge from the interplay of anisotropy of the long-range exchange interaction and symmetry breaking. We demonstrate nonfrustrating long-range interactions induce the true long-range order in Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with a continuous symmetry breaking, lifting the restrictions imposed by the Mermin-Wagner theorem.

Quantum criticality and universality in the $p$-wave paired Aubry-André-Harper model

We investigate the quantum criticality and universality in Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model with $p$-wave superconducting pairing $Δ$ in terms of the generalized fidelity susceptibility (GFS). We show that the higher-order GFS is more efficient in spotlighting the critical points than lower-order ones, and thus the enhanced sensitivity is propitious for extracting the associated universal information from the finite-size scaling in quasiperiodic systems. The GFS obeys power-law scaling for localization transitions and thus scaling properties of the GFS provide compelling values of critical exponents. Specifically, we demonstrate that the fixed modulation phase $ϕ=π$ alleviates the odd-even effect of scaling functions across the Aubry-André transition with $Δ=0$, while the scaling functions for odd and even numbers of system sizes with a finite $Δ$ cannot coincide irrespective of the value of $ϕ$. A thorough numerical analysis with odd number of system sizes reveals the correlation-length exponent $ν\simeq 1.000$ and the dynamical exponent $z$ $\simeq$ 1.388 for transitions from the critical phase to the localized phase, suggesting the unusual universality class of localization transitions in the AAH model with a finite $p$-wave superconducting pairing lies in a different universality class from the Aubry-André transition. The results may be testified in near term state-of-the-art experimental settings.

Quantum Many-Body Scars in Spin-1 Kitaev Chains

To provide a physical example of quantum scars, we study the many-body scars in the spin-1 Kitaev chain where the so-called PXP Hamiltonian is exactly embedded in the spectra. Regarding the conserved quantities, the Hilbert space is fragmented into disconnected subspaces and we explore the associated constrained dynamics. The continuous revivals of the fidelity and the entanglement entropy when the initial state is prepared in $\vert\mathbb{Z}_k\rangle$ ($k=2,3$) state illustrate the essential physics of the PXP model. We study the quantum phase transitions in the one-dimensional spin-1 Kitaev-Heisenberg model using the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos exact diagonalization methods, and determine the phase diagram. We parametrize the two terms in the Hamiltonian by the angle $ϕ$, where the Kitaev term is $K\equiv\sin(ϕ)$ and competes with the Heisenberg $J\equiv\cos(ϕ)$ term. One finds a rich ground state phase diagram as a function of the angle $ϕ$. Depending on the ratio $K/J\equiv\tan(ϕ)$, the system either breaks the symmetry to one of distinct symmetry broken phases, or preserves the symmetry in a quantum spin liquid phase with frustrated interactions. We find that the scarred state is stable for perturbations which obey $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetry, while it becomes unstable against Heisenberg-type perturbations.\\ \textit{Accepted for publication in Physical Review Research}

Entanglements and correlations of one-dimensional quantum spin-1/2 chain with anisotropic power-law long range interactions

The correlations, entanglement entropy, and fidelity susceptibility are calculated for a one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ chain with anisotropic power-law long range interactions by employing the density matrix renormalization group method. In particular, this long-range interaction is assigned to ferromagnetic for transversal components, while it can be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic for the longitudinal spin component. Two ground-state phase diagrams are established versus the anisotropy of the interactions which not only changes the phase boundaries of the counterparts with short-range interactions, but also leads to the emergence of exotic phases. We found that the long-range interactions of the z-component results in a Wigner crystal phase, whereas the transversal one may break a continuous symmetry, resulting in a continuous symmetry breaking phase.

Exact dynamics of the homogeneous two-qubit $XXZ$ central spin model with the spin bath prepared in superpositions of symmetric Dicke states

We obtain exact dynamics of a two-qubit central spin model (CSM) consisting of two interacting qubits homogeneously coupled to a spin bath via the $XXZ$-type coupling, with the bath initially prepared in linear superpositions of the symmetric Dicke states. Using the interaction picture Hamiltonian with respect to the non-spin-flipping part of the model, we derive a sequence of equations of motion within each magnetization sector satisfied by the probability amplitudes of the time-evolved state. These equations of motion admit analytical solutions for the single-qubit CSM in which one of the two central qubits decouples from the rest of the system. Based on this, we provide a quantitative interpretation to the observed collapse-revival phenomena in the single-qubit Rabi oscillations when the bath is prepared in the spin coherent state. We then study the disentanglement and coherence dynamics of two initially entangled noninteracting qubits when the two qubits interact with individual baths or with a common bath. For individual baths the coherent dynamics is found to positively correlated to the single-qubit purity dynamics, and entanglement sudden disappearance and revivals are observed in both cases. The entanglement creation of two initially separable qubits coupled to a common bath is also studied and collapse and revival behaviors in the entanglement dynamics are observed. Choosing the equally weighted state and the $W$-class states as the bath initial states, we finally study the dynamics of entanglement between two individual bath spins and demonstrate the entanglement sharing mechanism in such a system.

Lifshitz phase transitions in one-dimensional Gamma model

In this paper, we study quantum phase transitions and magnetic properties of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Gamma model, which describes the off-diagonal exchange interactions between edge-shared octahedra with strong spin-orbit couplings along the sawtooth chain. The competing exchange interactions between the nearest neighbors and the second neighbors stabilize semimetallic ground state in terms of spinless fermions, and give rise to a rich phase diagram, which consists of three gapless phases. We find distinct phases are characterized by the number of Weyl nodes in the momentum space, and such changes in the topology of the Fermi surface without symmetry breaking produce a variety of Lifshitz transitions, in which the Weyl nodes situating at $k=π$ interchange from type I to type II. A coexistence of type-I and type-II Weyl nodes is found in phase II. The information measures including concurrence, entanglement entropy and relative entropy can effectively signal the second-order transitions. The results indicate that the Gamma model can act as an exactly solvable model to describe Lifshitz phase transitions in correlated electron systems.

Quantum phase transitions in a spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain with long-range interactions and modulated single-ion anisotropy

We study the phase diagram of spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain with isotropic antiferromagnetic interactions decaying with a power-law $\propto r^{-α}$ ($α\ge 1$) accompanied by modulated single-ion anisotropy. Employing the techniques of the density-matrix renormalization group, effects of long-range interactions and single-ion anisotropy on a variety of correlations are investigated. In order to check the consistency, the fidelity susceptibilities are evaluated across quantum phase transitions. The quantum critical points are faithfully detected and orders of phase transitions are determined. The correlation-length critical exponent is extracted from scaling functions of the fidelity susceptibility. The presence of long-range interactions leads to quantitative change of the phase boundaries and reduces the order of phase transition under certain conditions. A direct first-order transition between the periodic Néel phase and the large-$D$ phase occurs for slowly decaying antiferromagnetic interactions.

Resilience of the superradiant phase against $\mathbf {A^2}$ effects in the quantum Rabi dimer

We explore the quantum criticality of a two-site model combining quantum Rabi models with hopping interaction. Through a combination of analytical and numerical approaches, we find that the model allows the appearance of a superradiant quantum phase transition (QPT) even in the presence of strong $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms, preventing single-site superradiance. In the two-site model the effect of $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms can be surmounted by the photon delocalization from hopping, and a reversed superradiant QPT occurs as a consequence of the competition between $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms and the hopping interaction. We characterize the phase diagram and scaling functions, and extract the critical exponents in the vicinity of the critical point, thus establishing the universal behavior of the second-order phase transition. Remarkably the effective hopping strength will be enhanced if more cavities are cascaded. We also prove that the multi-qubit counterpart of the quantum Rabi dimer, i.e., the Dicke dimer, has the same properties in beating the $\mathbf{A}^2$ effect. Our work provides a way to the study of phase transitions in presence of the $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms and offers the prospect of investigating quantum-criticality physics and quantum devices in many-body systems.

Quantum phase transitions and critical behaviors in the two-mode three-level quantum Rabi model

We explore an extended quantum Rabi model describing the interaction between a two-mode bosonic field and a three-level atom. Quantum phase transitions of this few degree of freedom model is found when the ratio $η$ of the atom energy scale to the bosonic field frequency approaches infinity. An analytical solution is provided when the two lowest-energy levels are degenerate. According to it, we recognize that the phase diagram of the model consists of three regions: one normal phase and two superradiant phases. The quantum phase transitions between the normal phase and the two superradiant phases are of second order relating to the spontaneous breaking of the discrete $Z_{2}$ symmetry. On the other hand, the quantum phase transition between the two different superradiant phases is discontinuous with a phase boundary line relating to the continuous $U(1)$ symmetry. For a large enough but finite $η$, the scaling function and critical exponents are derived analytically and verified numerically, from which the universality class of the model is identified.

Electronic properties in a quantum well structure of Weyl semimetal

We investigate the confined states and transport of three-dimensional Weyl electrons around a one-dimensional external rectangular electrostatic potential. Confined states with finite transverse wave vector exist at energies higher than the half well depth or lower than the half barrier height. The rectangular potential appears completely transparent to normal incident electrons but not otherwise. The tunneling transmission coefficient is sensitive to their incident angle and shows resonant peaks when their energy coincides with the confined spectra. In addition, for electrons in the conduction (valence) band through a potential barrier (well), the transmission spectrum has a gap of width increasing with the incident angle. Interestingly, the electron linear zero-temperature conductance over the potential can approach zero when the Fermi energy is aligned to the top and bottom energies of the potential, when only electron beams normal to the potential interfaces can pass through. The considered structure can be used to collimate Weyl electron beams.

Energy dynamics in a generalized compass chain

We investigate the energy dynamics in a generalized compass chain under an external magnetic field. We show that the energy current operators act on three contiguous sites in the absence of the magnetic field, and they are incorporated with inhomogenous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the presence of the magnetic field. These complex interactions remain the Hamiltonian be an exactly solvable spin model. We study the effects of the three-site interactions and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions on the energy spectra and phase diagram. The results have revealed that the energy current of the pristine quantum compass model is conserved due to the associated intermediate symmetries, and for other general cases such characteristic does not exist.

Quantum entanglement of electrons in a biased 1D two-probe device

Electronic quantum entanglement between the central chain and the two electrodes in an infinite one-dimensional two-probe device system is studied. The entanglement entropy is calculated employing the nonequilibrium Green's function method in the tight-binding model based on the relation between the correlation matrix and the von Neumann entropy. By extending the entropy to nonequilibrium cases, we have studied the scaling behavior when a voltage bias is applied between the two electrodes. The entropy usually decreases with the bias and may jump up when a quasi-state in the chain aligns in energy with the band edges in the electrodes. Odd-even effect is observed due to the symmetry of the chain.

Quantum phase transitions in a generalized compass chain with three-site interactions

We consider a class of one-dimensional compass models with XYZ$-$YZX-type of three-site exchange interaction in an external magnetic field. We present the exact solution derived by means of Jordan-Wigner transformation, and study the excitation gap, spin correlations, and establish the phase diagram. Besides the canted antiferromagnetic and polarized phases, the three-site interactions induce two distinct chiral phases, corresponding to gapless spinless-fermion systems having two or four Fermi points. We find that the $z$ component of scalar chirality operator can act as an order parameter for these chiral phases. We also find that the thermodynamic quantities including the Wilson ratio can characterize the liquid phases. Finally, a nontrivial magnetoelectric effect is explored, and we show that the polarization can be manipulated by the magnetic field in the absence of electric field.

Entanglement Driven Phase Transitions in Spin-Orbital Models

To demonstrate the role played by the von Neumann entropy spectra in quantum phase transitions we investigate the one-dimensional anisotropic SU(2)$\otimes XXZ$ spin-orbital model with negative exchange parameter. In the case of classical Ising orbital interactions we discover an unexpected novel phase with Majumdar-Ghosh-like spin-singlet dimer correlations triggered by spin-orbital entanglement and having $k=π/2$ orbital correlations, while all the other phases are disentangled. For anisotropic $XXZ$ orbital interactions both spin-orbital entanglement and spin-dimer correlations extend to the antiferro-spin/alternating-orbital phase. This quantum phase provides a unique example of two coupled order parameters which change the character of the phase transition from first-order to continuous. Hereby we have established the von Neumann entropy spectral function as a valuable tool to identify the change of ground state degeneracies and of the spin-orbital entanglement of elementary excitations in quantum phase transitions.

Entanglement entropy and fidelity susceptibility in the one-dimensional spin-1 XXZ chains with alternating single-site anisotropy

We study the fidelity susceptibility in an antiferromagnetic spin-1 XXZ chain numerically. By using the density-matrix renormalization group method, the effects of the alternating single-site anisotropy $D$ on fidelity susceptibility are investigated. Its relation with the quantum phase transition is analyzed. It is found that the quantum phase transition from the Haldane spin liquid to periodic Néel spin solid can be well characterized by the fidelity. Finite size scaling of fidelity susceptibility shows a power-law divergence at criticality, which indicates the quantum phase transition is of second order. The results are confirmed by the second derivative of the ground-state energy. We also study the relationship between the entanglement entropy, the Schmidt gap and quantum phase transitions. Conclusions drawn from these quantum information observables agree well with each other.

Generalized fidelity susceptibility at phase transitions

In the present work, we investigate the intrinsic relation between quantum fidelity susceptibility (QFS) and the dynamical structure factor. We give a concise proof of the QFS beyond the perturbation theory. With the QFS in the Lehmann representation, we point out that the QFS actually the negative-two-power moment of dynamical structure factor, and illuminate the inherent relation between physical quantities in the linear response theory. Moreover, we discuss the generalized fidelity susceptibility (GFS) of any quantum relevant operator, that may not be coupled to the driving parameter, present similar scaling behaviors. Finally, we demonstrate that the QFS can not capture the fourth-order quantum phase transition in a spin-1/2 anisotropic XY chain in the transverse alternating field, while a lower-order GFS can seize the criticalities.

Quantum entanglement in the one-dimensional spin-orbital SU(2)$\otimes XXZ$ model

We investigate the phase diagram and the spin-orbital entanglement of a one-dimensional SU(2)$\otimes XXZ$ model with SU(2) spin exchange and anisotropic $XXZ$ orbital exchange interactions and negative exchange coupling. As a unique feature, the spin-orbital entanglement entropy in the entangled ground states increases here linearly with system size. In the case of Ising orbital interactions we identify an emergent phase with long-range spin-singlet dimer correlations triggered by a quadrupling of correlations in the orbital sector. The peculiar translational invariant spin-singlet dimer phase has finite von Neumann entanglement entropy and survives when orbital quantum fluctuations are included. It even persists in the isotropic SU(2)$\otimes$SU(2) limit. Surprisingly, for finite transverse orbital coupling the long-range spin singlet correlations also coexist in the antiferromagnetic spin and alternating orbital phase making this phase also unconventional. Moreover we also find a complementary orbital singlet phase that exists in the isotropic case but does not extend to the Ising limit. The nature of entanglement appears essentially different from that found in the frequently discussed model with positive coupling. Furthermore we investigate the collective spin and orbital wave excitations of the disentangled ferromagnetic-spin/ferro-orbital ground state and explore the continuum of spin-orbital excitations. Interestingly one finds among the latter excitations two modes of exciton bound states. Their spin-orbital correlations differ from the remaining continuum states and exhibit logarithmic scaling of the von Neumann entropy with increasing system size.

Quantum phase transitions and string orders in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising alternating chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Quantum phase transitions (QPTs) and the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising alternating chain (HIAC) with uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction are investigated by a matrix-product-state (MPS) method. By calculating the odd- and even-string order parameters, we recognize two kinds of Haldane phases, i.e., the odd- and even-Haldane phases. Furthermore, doubly degenerate entanglement spectra on odd and even bonds are observed in odd- and even-Haldane phases, respectively. A rich phase diagram including four different phases, i.e., an antiferromagnetic (AF), AF stripe, odd- and even-Haldane phases, is obtained. These phases are found to be separated by continuous QPTs: the topological QPT between the odd- and even-Haldane phases is verified to be continuous and corresponds to conformal field theory with central charge $c$=1; while the rest phase transitions in the phase diagram are found to be $c$=1/2. We also revisit, with our MPS method, the exactly solvable case of HIAC model with DM interactions only on odd bonds, and find that the even-Haldane phase disappears, but the other three phases, i.e., the AF, AF stripe, and odd-Haldane phases, still remain in the phase diagram. We exhibit the evolution of the even-Haldane phase by tuning the DM interactions on the even bonds gradually.

Quantum phase transitions in spin-1 compass chains

The ground-state phase diagram and quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in a spin-1 compass chain are investigated by the infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) method. Various phases are discerned by energy densities, spin correlations and entanglement entropy. A generalized string correlator is found to be capable of describing the nonlocal string order in the disordered phase. Furthermore, in the noncritical disordered phase, the spin-spin correlations are found to decay exponentially. Except for a multicritical point ($J_{1}=0$, $J_{2}=0$), the QPTs are determined to have second-order characters. In addition, the central charges on these critical phase boundaries are determined to be $c$=1/2, therefore these QPTs belong to the Ising universality class.

The scaling of entanglement entropy in a honeycomb lattice on a torus

The entanglement entropy of a noninteracting fermionic system confined to a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice on a torus is calculated. We find that the entanglement entropy can characterize Lifshitz phase transitions without a local order parameter. In the noncritical phase and critical phase with a nodal Fermi surface, the entanglement entropy satisfies an area law. The leading subarea term is a constant in the gapped phase rather than a logarithmic additive term in the gapless regime. The tuning of chemical potential allows for a nonzero Fermi surface, whose variation along a particular direction determines a logarithmic violation of the area law. We perform the scaling of entanglement entropy numerically and find agreement between the analytic and numerical results. Furthermore, we clearly show that an entanglement spectrum is equivalent to an edge spectrum.

Exact treatment of magnetism-driven ferroelectricity in the one-dimensional compass model

We consider a class of one-dimensional compass models with antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction in an external magnetic field. Based on the exact solution derived by means of Jordan-Wigner transformation, we study the excitation gap, spin correlations, ground-state degeneracy, and critical properties at phase transitions. The phase diagram at finite electric and magnetic field consists of three phases: ferromagnetic, canted antiferromagnetic, and chiral. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction induces an electrical polarization in the ground state of the chiral phase, where the nonlocal string order and special features of entanglement spectra arise, while strong chiral correlations emerge at finite temperature in the other phases and are controlled by a gap between the nonchiral ground state and the chiral excitations. We further show that the magnetoelectric effects in all phases disappear above a typical temperature corresponding to the total bandwidth of the effective fermionic model. To this end we explore the entropy, specific heat, magnetization, electric polarization, and the magnetoelectric tensor at finite temperature. We identify rather peculiar specific-heat and polarization behavior of the compass model which follows from highly frustrated interactions.

Hole propagation in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model: From quasiparticles in quantum Neel states to non-Fermi liquid in the Kitaev phase

We explore with exact diagonalization the propagation of a single hole in four magnetic phases of the t-J-like Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice: the Neel antiferromagnetic, stripe, zigzag and Kitaev spin-liquid phase. We find coherent propagation of spin-polaron quasiparticles in the antiferromagnetic phase by a similar mechanism as in the $t$-$J$ model for high-$T_c$ cuprates. In the stripe and zigzag phases clear quasiparticles features appear in spectral functions of those propagators where holes are created and annihilated on one sublattice, while they remain largely {\it hidden} in those spectral functions that correspond to photoemission experiments. As the most surprising result, we find a totally incoherent spectral weight distribution for the spectral function of a hole moving in the Kitaev spin-liquid phase in the strong coupling regime relevant for iridates. At intermediate coupling the finite systems calculation reveals a well defined quasiparticle at the $Γ$ point, however, we find that the gapless spin excitations wipe out quasiparticles at finite momenta. Also for this more subtle case we conclude that in the thermodynamic limit the lightly doped Kitaev liquid phase does not support quasiparticle states in the neighborhood of $Γ$, and therefore yields a {\it non-Fermi liquid}, contrary to earlier suggestions based on slave-boson studies. These observations are supported by the presented study of the dynamic spin-structure factor for the Kitaev spin liquid regime.

Quantum phase transitions in exactly solvable one-dimensional compass models

We present an exact solution for a class of one-dimensional compass models which stand for interacting orbital degrees of freedom in a Mott insulator. By employing the Jordan-Wigner transformation we map these models on noninteracting fermions and discuss how spin correlations, high degeneracy of the ground state, and $Z_2$ symmetry in the quantum compass model are visible in the fermionic language. Considering a zigzag chain of ions with singly occupied $e_g$ orbitals ($e_g$ orbital model) we demonstrate that the orbital excitations change qualitatively with increasing transverse field, and that the excitation gap closes at the quantum phase transition to a polarized state. This phase transition disappears in the quantum compass model with maximally frustrated orbital interactions which resembles the Kitaev model. Here we find that finite transverse field destabilizes the orbital-liquid ground state with macroscopic degeneracy, and leads to peculiar behavior of the specific heat and orbital susceptibility at finite temperature. We show that the entropy and the cooling rate at finite temperature exhibit quite different behavior near the critical point for these two models.

Dynamic screening and plasmon spectrum in bilayer graphene

We have theoretically studied the collective response properties of the two-dimensional chiral electron gas in bilayer graphene within the random phase approximation. The cooperation of external controlling factors like perpendicular electric bias, temperature, doping, and substrate background provides great freedom to manipulate the dynamic dielectric function and the low-energy plasmon dispersion of the system. Intriguing situations with potential application are systematically explored and discussed. Extra undamped plasmon modes might emerge under electric bias. They have almost zero group velocities and are easy to manipulate.

Matrix Product State and Quantum Phase Transitions in the One-Dimensional Extended Quantum Compass Model

The matrix product state (MPS) is utilized to study the ground state properties and quantum phase transitions (QPTs) of the one-dimensional quantum compass model (QCM). The MPS wavefunctions are argued to be very efficient descriptions of QCM ground states, and are numerically determined by imaginary time projections. The ground state energy, correlations, quantum entanglement and its spectrum, local and nonlocal order parameters, etc., are calculated and studied in details. It is revealed that the bipartite and block entanglement entropies, as well as the nearest neighbor correlation functions can be used to detect the second-order QPTs, but not the first-order ones, while fidelity detections can recognize both. The entanglement spectrum is extracted from the MPS wavefunction, and found to be doubly degenerate in disordered phases of QCM, where non-local string order parameters exist. Moreover, with linearized tensor renormalization group method, the specific heat curves are evaluated and their low temperature behaviors are investigated.

Quantum Correlation in One-dimensional Extend Quantum Compass Model

We study the correlations in the one-dimensional extended quantum compass model in a transverse magnetic field. By exactly solving the Hamiltonian, we find that the quantum correlation of the ground state of one-dimensional quantum compass model is vanishing. Quantum state transmission in a cavity array via two-photon exchange

The dynamical behavior of a coupled cavity array is investigated when each cavity contains a three-level atom. For the uniform and staggered intercavity hopping, the whole system Hamiltonian can be analytically diagonalized in the subspace of single-atom excitation. The quantum state transfer along the cavities is analyzed in detail for distinct regimes of parameters, and some interesting phenomena including binary transmission, selective localization of the excitation population are revealed. We demonstrate that the uniform coupling is more suitable for the quantum state transfer. It is shown that the initial state of polariton located in the first cavity is crucial to the transmission fidelity, and the local entanglement depresses the state transfer probability. Exploiting the metastable state, the distance of the quantum state transfer can be much longer than that of Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model. A higher transmission probability and longer distance can be achieved by employing a class of initial encodings and final decodings.

Von Neumann Entropy Spectra and Entangled Excitations in Spin-Orbital Models

We consider the low-energy excitations of one-dimensional spin-orbital models which consist of spin waves, orbital waves, and joint spin-orbital excitations. Among the latter we identify strongly entangled spin-orbital bound states which appear as peaks in the von Neumann entropy (vNE) spectral function introduced in this work. The strong entanglement of bound states is manifested by a universal logarithmic scaling of the vNE with system size, while the vNE of other spin-orbital excitations saturates. We suggest that spin-orbital entanglement can be experimentally explored by the measurement of the dynamical spin-orbital correlations using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, where strong spin-orbit coupling associated with the core hole plays a role.

Fidelity susceptibility in the two-dimensional spin-orbit models

We study the quantum phase transitions in the two-dimensional spin-orbit models in terms of fidelity susceptibility and reduced fidelity susceptibility. An order-to-order phase transition is identified by fidelity susceptibility in the two-dimensional Heisenberg XXZ model with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction on a square lattice. The finite size scaling of fidelity susceptibility shows a power-law divergence at criticality, which indicates the quantum phase transition is of second order. Two distinct types of quantum phase transitions are witnessed by fidelity susceptibility in Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a hexagonal lattice. We exploit the symmetry of two-dimensional quantum compass model, and obtain a simple analytic expression of reduced fidelity susceptibility. Compared with the derivative of ground-state energy, the fidelity susceptibility is a bit more sensitive to phase transition. The violation of power-law behavior for the scaling of reduced fidelity susceptibility at criticality suggests that the quantum phase transition belongs to a first-order transition. We conclude that fidelity susceptibility and reduced fidelity susceptibility show great advantage to characterize diverse quantum phase transitions in spin-orbit models.

The entanglement dynamics of interacting qubits embedded in a spin environment with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya term

We investigate the entanglement dynamics of two interacting qubits in a spin environment, which is described by an XY model with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction. The competing effects of environmental noise and interqubit coupling on entanglement generation for various system parameters are studied. We find that the entanglement generation is suppressed remarkably in weak-coupling region at quantum critical point (QCP). However, the suppression of the entanglement generation at QCP can be compensated both by increasing the DM interaction and by decreasing the anisotropy of the spin chain. Beyond the weak-coupling region, there exist resonance peaks of concurrence when the system-bath coupling equals to external magnetic field. We attribute the presence of resonance peaks to the flat band of the self-Hamiltonian. These peaks are highly sensitive to anisotropy parameter and DM interaction.

Competitions of magnetism and superconductivity in FeAs-based materials

Using the numerical unrestricted Hartree-Fock approach, we study the ground state of a two-orbital model describing newly discovered FeAs-based superconductors. We observe the competition of a $(0, π)$ mode spin-density wave and the superconductivity as the doping concentration changes. There might be a small region in the electron-doping side where the magnetism and superconductivity coexist. In this work, we establish a few exact identities through commutation of intra-orbital and inter-orbital on-site pairings with a two-orbital model describing newly discovered FeAs-based superconductors. Hence the favorable pairings in newly discovered high-temperature oxypnictide superconductors are proposed.
