Quantum Many-Body Scars in Spin-1 Kitaev Chains

To provide a physical example of quantum scars, we study the many-body scars in the spin-1 Kitaev chain where the so-called PXP Hamiltonian is exactly embedded in the spectra. Regarding the conserved quantities, the Hilbert space is fragmented into disconnected subspaces and we explore the associated constrained dynamics. The continuous revivals of the fidelity and the entanglement entropy when the initial state is prepared in $\vert\mathbb{Z}_k\rangle$ ($k=2,3$) state illustrate the essential physics of the PXP model. We study the quantum phase transitions in the one-dimensional spin-1 Kitaev-Heisenberg model using the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos exact diagonalization methods, and determine the phase diagram. We parametrize the two terms in the Hamiltonian by the angle $ϕ$, where the Kitaev term is $K\equiv\sin(ϕ)$ and competes with the Heisenberg $J\equiv\cos(ϕ)$ term. One finds a rich ground state phase diagram as a function of the angle $ϕ$. Depending on the ratio $K/J\equiv\tan(ϕ)$, the system either breaks the symmetry to one of distinct symmetry broken phases, or preserves the symmetry in a quantum spin liquid phase with frustrated interactions. We find that the scarred state is stable for perturbations which obey $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetry, while it becomes unstable against Heisenberg-type perturbations.\\ \textit{Accepted for publication in Physical Review Research}

Discovery of the soft electronic modes of the trimeron order in magnetite

The Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe$_3$O$_4$) is the first metal-insulator transition ever observed and involves a concomitant structural rearrangement and charge-orbital ordering. Due to the complex interplay of these intertwined degrees of freedom, a complete characterization of the low-temperature phase of magnetite and the mechanism driving the transition have long remained elusive. It was demonstrated in recent years that the fundamental building blocks of the charge-ordered structure are three-site small polarons called trimerons. However, electronic collective modes of this trimeron order have not been detected to date, and thus an understanding of the dynamics of the Verwey transition from an electronic point of view is still lacking. Here, we discover spectroscopic signatures of the low-energy electronic excitations of the trimeron network using terahertz light. By driving these modes coherently with an ultrashort laser pulse, we reveal their critical softening and hence demonstrate their direct involvement in the Verwey transition. These findings represent the first observation of soft modes in magnetite and shed new light on the cooperative mechanism at the origin of its exotic ground state.

Dynamical Study of the Origin of the Charge Density Wave in $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ ($A=$K, Rb, Cs) Compounds

Systems containing the ideal kagome lattice can exhibit several distinct and novel exotic states of matter. One example of such systems is a recently discovered $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ ($A$ = K, Rb, and Cs) family of compounds. Here, the coexistence of the charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity is observed. In this paper, we study the dynamic properties of the $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ systems in context of origin of the CDW phase. We show and discuss the structural phase transition from $P6/mmm$ to $C2/m$ symmetry that are induced by the presence of phonon soft modes. We conclude that the CDW observed in this family of compounds is a consequence of the atom displacement, from the high symmetry position of the kagome net, in low-temperature phase. Additionally, using the numerical {\it ab initio} methods, we discuss the charge distribution on the $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ surface. We show that the observed experimental %$4\times 1$ stripe-like modulation of the surface, can be related to surface reconstruction and manifestation of the three dimensional $2 \times 2 \times 2$ bulk CDW. Finally, the consequence of realization of the $C2/m$ structure on the electronic properties are discussed. We show that the electronic band structure reconstruction and the accompanying modification of density of states correspond well to the experimental data.

First principles study of topological phase in chains of $3d$ transition metals

Recent experiments have shown the signatures of Majorana bound states at the ends of magnetic chains deposited on a superconducting substrate. Here, we employ first principles calculations to directly investigate the topological properties of $3d$ transition metal nanochains (i.e., Mn, Cr, Fe and Co). In contrast to the previous studies [Nadj-Perge et al. Science 346, 602 (2014) and Ruby et al. Nano Lett. 17, 4473 (2017)], we found the exact tight binding models in the Wannier orbital basis for the isolated chains as well as for the surface--deposited wires. Based on these models, we calculate topological invariant of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ phase for all systems. Our results for the isolated chains demonstrate the existence of the topological phase only in the Mn and Co systems. We considered also a non-collinear magnetic order as a source of the non--trivial topological phase and found that this type of magnetic order is not a stable ground state in the Fe and Co isolated chains. Further studies showed that a coupling between the chain and substrate leads to strong modification of the band structure. Moreover, the analysis of the topological invariant indicates a possibility of emergence of the topological phase in all studied nanochains deposited on the Pb surface. Therefore, our results demonstrate an important role of the coupling between deposited atoms and a substrate for topological properties of nanosystems.

Low-Temperature Phase of the Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$ Superconductor: Ab initio Phonon Calculations and Raman Scattering

Using an {\it ab initio} approach, we report a phonon soft mode in the tetragonal structure described by the space group $I4_{1}22$ of the $1$ K $5d$ superconductor Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$. It induces an orthorhombic distortion to a crystal structure described by the space group $F222$ which hosts the superconducting state. This new phase has a lower total energy than the other known crystal structures of Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$. Comprehensive temperature dependent Raman scattering experiments on isotope enriched samples, $^{116}$Cd$_2$Re$_2{^{18}}$O$_7$, not only confirm the already known structural phase transitions but also allow us to identify a new characteristic temperature regime around $\sim 80$ K, below which the Raman spectra undergo remarkable changes with the development of several sharp modes and mode splitting. Together with the results of the \textit{ab initio} phonon calculations we take these observations as strong evidence for another phase transition to a novel low-temperature crystal structure of Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$.

Orbital Rotations induced by Charges of Polarons and Defects in Doped Vanadates

We explore the competiton of doped holes and defects that leads to the loss of orbital order in vanadate perovskites. In compounds such as La$_{1-{\sf x}}$Ca$_{\,\sf x}$VO$_3$ spin and orbital order result from super-exchange interactions described by an extended three-orbital degenerate Hubbard-Hund model for the vanadium $t_{2g}$ electrons. Long-range Coulomb potentials of charged Ca$^{2+}$ defects and $e$-$e$ interactions control the emergence of defect states inside the Mott gap. The quadrupolar components of the Coulomb fields of doped holes induce anisotropic orbital rotations of degenerate orbitals. These rotations modify the spin-orbital polaron clouds and compete with orbital rotations induced by defects. Both mechanisms lead to a mixing of orbitals, and cause the suppression of the asymmetry of kinetic energy in the $C$-type magnetic phase. We find that the gradual decline of orbital order with doping, a characteristic feature of the vanadates, however, has its origin not predominantly in the charge carriers, but in the off-diagonal couplings of orbital rotations induced by the charges of the doped ions.

Origin of monoclinic distortion and its impact on the electronic properties in KO$_2$

We use the density functional theory and lattice dynamics calculations to investigate the properties of potassium superoxide KO$_2$ in which spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom are interrelated and determine the low-temperature phase. After calculating phonon dispersion relations in the high-temperature tetragonal $I4/mmm$ structure, we identify a soft phonon mode leading to the monoclinic $C2/c$ symmetry and optimize the crystal geometry resulting from this mode. Thus we reveal a displacive character of the structural transition with the group-subgroup relation between the tetragonal and monoclinic phases. We compare the electronic structure of KO$_2$ with antiferromagnetic spin order in the tetragonal and monoclinic phases. We emphasize that realistic treatment of the electronic structure requires including the local Coulomb interaction $U$ in the valence orbitals of the O$^-_2$ ions. The presence of the `Hubbard' $U$ leads to the gap opening at the Fermi energy in the tetragonal structure without orbital order but with weak spin-orbit interaction. We remark that the gap opening in the tetragonal phase could also be obtained when the orbital order is initiated in the calculations with a realistic value of $U$. Finally, we show that the local Coulomb interactions and the finite lattice distortion, which together lead to the orbital order via the Jahn-Teller effect, are responsible for the enhanced insulating gap in the monoclinic structure.

Quantum phase transitions in a spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain with long-range interactions and modulated single-ion anisotropy

We study the phase diagram of spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain with isotropic antiferromagnetic interactions decaying with a power-law $\propto r^{-α}$ ($α\ge 1$) accompanied by modulated single-ion anisotropy. Employing the techniques of the density-matrix renormalization group, effects of long-range interactions and single-ion anisotropy on a variety of correlations are investigated. In order to check the consistency, the fidelity susceptibilities are evaluated across quantum phase transitions. The quantum critical points are faithfully detected and orders of phase transitions are determined. The correlation-length critical exponent is extracted from scaling functions of the fidelity susceptibility. The presence of long-range interactions leads to quantitative change of the phase boundaries and reduces the order of phase transition under certain conditions. A direct first-order transition between the periodic Néel phase and the large-$D$ phase occurs for slowly decaying antiferromagnetic interactions.

Tuning Crystal Field Potential by Orbital Dilution in $d^4$ Oxides

We investigate the interplay between Coulomb driven orbital order and octahedral distortions in strongly correlated Mott insulators due to orbital dilution, i.e., doping by metal ions without an orbital degree of freedom. In particular, we focus on layered transition metal oxides and study the effective spin-orbital exchange due to $d^3$ substitution at $d^4$ sites. The structure of the $d^3-d^4$ spin-orbital coupling between the impurity and the host in the presence of octahedral rotations favors a distinct type of orbital polarization pointing towards the impurity and outside the impurity--host plane. This yields an effective lattice potential that generally competes with that associated with flat octahedra and, in turn, can drive an inversion of the crystal field interaction.

Electronic properties in a quantum well structure of Weyl semimetal

We investigate the confined states and transport of three-dimensional Weyl electrons around a one-dimensional external rectangular electrostatic potential. Confined states with finite transverse wave vector exist at energies higher than the half well depth or lower than the half barrier height. The rectangular potential appears completely transparent to normal incident electrons but not otherwise. The tunneling transmission coefficient is sensitive to their incident angle and shows resonant peaks when their energy coincides with the confined spectra. In addition, for electrons in the conduction (valence) band through a potential barrier (well), the transmission spectrum has a gap of width increasing with the incident angle. Interestingly, the electron linear zero-temperature conductance over the potential can approach zero when the Fermi energy is aligned to the top and bottom energies of the potential, when only electron beams normal to the potential interfaces can pass through. The considered structure can be used to collimate Weyl electron beams.

Green's function variational approach to orbital polarons in KCuF3

We develop an $e_g$ orbital, $t$-$J$-like model of a single charge doped into a two-dimensional plane with ferromagnetic spin order and alternating orbital order, and present its solution by Green's functions in the variational approximation framework. The model is designed to represent the orbital physics within ferromagnetic $(a,b)$ planes of KCuF$_3$ and K$_2$CuF$_4$. The variational approximation (VA) relies on the systematic generation of equations of motion for the Green's function, taking into account the real-space constraints coming from the exclusion of doubly occupied sites. This method is compared to the firmly established self-consistent Born approximation, and to the variational cluster approximation (VCA) which relies on the itinerant regime of the model. We find that the present variational approximation captures the essential aspects of the spectral weight distribution of the coherent quasiparticle state and gives a result similar to the VCA, while also reproducing well the momentum dependence of the spectral moments. In contrast, the spectral function obtained within the self-consistent Born approximation is more incoherent and its quasiparticle is heavier, at strong effective couplings, than observed with VCA and VA.

Multiband $d-p$ model and self-doping in the electronic structure of Ba$_2$IrO$_4$

We introduce and investigate the multiband $d-p$ model describing a IrO$_4$ layer (such as realized in Ba$_2$IrO$_4$) where all $34$ orbitals per unit cell are partly occupied, i.e., $t_{2g}$ and $e_g$ orbitals at iridium and $2p$ orbitals at oxygen ions. The model takes into account anisotropic iridium-oxygen $d-p$ and oxygen-oxygen $p-p$ hopping processes, crystal-field splittings, spin-orbit coupling, and the on-site Coulomb interactions, both at iridium and at oxygen ions. We show that the predictions based on assumed idealized ionic configuration (with $n_0=5+4\times 6=29$ electrons per IrO$_4$ unit) do not explain well the independent \textit{ab initio} data and the experimental data for Ba$_2$IrO$_4$. Instead we find that the total electron density in the $d-p$ states is smaller, $n=29-x<n_0$ ($x>0$). When we fix $x=1$, the predictions for the $d-p$ model become more realistic and weakly insulating antiferromagnetic ground state with the moments lying within IrO$_2$ planes along (110) direction is found, in agreement with experiment and \textit{ab initio} data. We also show that: (i) holes delocalize over the oxygen orbitals and the electron density at iridium ions is enhanced, hence (ii) their $e_g$ orbitals are occupied by more than one electron and have to be included in the multiband $d-p$ model describing iridates.

One-dimensional frustrated plaquette compass model: Nematic phase and spontaneous multimerization

We introduce a one-dimensional (1D) pseudospin model on a ladder where the Ising interactions along the legs and along the rungs alternate between $X_{i}X_{i+1}$ and $Z_{i}Z_{i+1}$ for even/odd bond (rung). We include also the next nearest neighbor Ising interactions on plaquettes' diagonals that alternate in such a way that a model where only leg interactions are switched on is equivalent to the one when only the diagonal ones are present. Thus in the absence of rung interactions the model can interpolate between two 1D compass models. The model posses local symmetries which are the parities within each $2\times 2$ cell (plaquette) of the ladder. We find that for different values of the interaction it can realize ground states that differ by the patterns formed by these local parities. By exact diagonalization we derive detailed phase diagrams for small systems of $L=4$, 6 and 8 plaquettes, and use next $L=12$ to identify generic phases that appear in larger systems as well. Among them we find a nematic phase with macroscopic degeneracy when the leg and diagonal interactions are equal and the rung interactions are larger than a critical value. The nematic phase is similar to the one found in the two-dimensional compass model. For particular parameters the low-energy sector of the present plaquette model reduces to a 1D compass model with spins $S=1$ which suggests that it realizes peculiar crossovers within the class of compass models. Finally, we show that the model can realize phases with broken translation invariance which can be either dimerized, trimerized, \textit{etcetera}, or completely disordered and highly entangled in a~well identified window of the phase diagram.

Quantum phase transitions in a generalized compass chain with three-site interactions

We consider a class of one-dimensional compass models with XYZ$-$YZX-type of three-site exchange interaction in an external magnetic field. We present the exact solution derived by means of Jordan-Wigner transformation, and study the excitation gap, spin correlations, and establish the phase diagram. Besides the canted antiferromagnetic and polarized phases, the three-site interactions induce two distinct chiral phases, corresponding to gapless spinless-fermion systems having two or four Fermi points. We find that the $z$ component of scalar chirality operator can act as an order parameter for these chiral phases. We also find that the thermodynamic quantities including the Wilson ratio can characterize the liquid phases. Finally, a nontrivial magnetoelectric effect is explored, and we show that the polarization can be manipulated by the magnetic field in the absence of electric field.

Spin-orbital order in undoped manganite LaMnO3 at finite temperature

We investigate the evolution of spin and orbital order in undoped LaMnO$_3$ under increasing temperature with a model including both superexchange and Jahn-Teller interactions. We used several cluster mean field calculation schemes and find coexisting $A$-type antiferromagnetic ($A$-AF) and $C$-type alternating orbital order at low temperature. The value of the Jahn-Teller coupling between strongly correlated $e_g$ orbitals is estimated from the orbital transition temperature at $T_{\rm OO}\simeq 780$ K. By a careful analysis of on-site and on-bond correlations we demonstrate that spin-orbital entanglement is rather weak. We have verified that the magnetic transition temperature is influenced by entangled spin-orbital operators as well as by entangled orbital operators on the bonds but the errors introduced by decoupling such operators partly compensate each other. Altogether, these results justify why the commonly used disentangled spin-orbital model is so successful in describing the magnetic properties and the temperature dependence of the optical spectral weights for LaMnO$_3$.

The Green function variational approximation: Significance of physical constraints

We present a calculation of the spectral properties of a single charge doped at a Cu($3d$) site of the Cu-F plane in KCuF$_{3}$. The problem is treated by generating the equations of motion for the Green's function by means of subsequent Dyson expansions and solving the resulting set of equations. This method, dubbed the variational approximation, is both very dependable and flexible, since it is a systematic expansion with precise control over elementary physical processes. It allows for deep insight into the underlying physics of polaron formation as well as for inclusion of many physical constraints, such as excluding crossing diagrams and double occupation constraint, which are not included in the Self-Consistent Born Approximation. Here we examine the role and importance of such constraints by analyzing various spectral functions obtained in second order VA.

Variational tensor network renormalization in imaginary time: Two-dimensional quantum compass model at finite temperature

Progress in describing thermodynamic phase transitions in quantum systems is obtained by noticing that the Gibbs operator $e^{-βH}$ for a two-dimensional (2D) lattice system with a Hamiltonian $H$ can be represented by a three-dimensional tensor network, the third dimension being the imaginary time (inverse temperature) $β$. Coarse-graining the network along $β$ results in a 2D projected entangled-pair operator (PEPO) with a finite bond dimension $D$. The coarse-graining is performed by a tree tensor network of isometries. The isometries are optimized variationally --- taking into account full tensor environment --- to maximize the accuracy of the PEPO. The algorithm is applied to the isotropic quantum compass model on an infinite square lattice near a symmetry-breaking phase transition at finite temperature. From the linear susceptibility in the symmetric phase and the order parameter in the symmetry-broken phase the critical temperature is estimated at ${\cal T}_c=0.0606(4)J$, where $J$ is the isotropic coupling constant between $S=1/2$ pseudospins.

Charge transfer model for the electronic structure of layered ruthenates

Motivated by the earlier experimental results and \textit{ab initio} studies on the electronic structure of layered ruthenates (Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and Ca$_2$RuO$_4$) we introduce and investigate the multiband $d-p$ charge transfer model describing a single RuO$_4$ layer, similar to the charge transfer model for a single CuO$_2$ plane including apical oxygen orbitals in high $T_c$ cuprates. The present model takes into account nearest-neighbor anisotropic ruthenium-oxygen $d-p$ and oxygen-oxygen $p-p$ hopping elements, crystal-field splittings and spin-orbit coupling. The intraorbital Coulomb repulsion and Hund's exchange are defined not only at ruthenium but also at oxygen ions. Our results demonstrate that the RuO$_4$ layer cannot be regarded to be a pure ruthenium $t_{2g}$ system. We examine a different scenario in which ruthenium $e_g$ orbitals are partly occupied and highlight the significance of oxygen orbitals. We point out that the predictions of an idealized model based on ionic configuration (with $n_0=4+4\times 6=28$ electrons per RuO$_4$ unit) do not agree with the experimental facts for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ which support our finding that the electron number in the $d-p$ states is significantly smaller. In fact, we find the electron occupation of $d$ and $p$ orbitals for a single RuO$_4$ unit $n=28-x$, being smaller by at least 1--1.5 electrons from that in the ionic model and corresponding to self-doping with $x\simeq 1.5$.

Defects, disorder and strong electron correlations in orbital degenerate, doped Mott insulators

We elucidate the effects of defect disorder and $e$-$e$ interaction on the spectral density of the defect states emerging in the Mott-Hubbard gap of doped transition-metal oxides, such as Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$VO$_{3}$. A soft gap of kinetic origin develops in the defect band and survives defect disorder for $e$-$e$ interaction strengths comparable to the defect potential and hopping integral values above a doping dependent threshold, otherwise only a pseudogap persists. These two regimes naturally emerge in the statistical distribution of gaps among different defect realizations, which turns out to be of Weibull type. Its shape parameter $k$ determines the exponent of the power-law dependence of the density of states at the chemical potential ($k-1$) and hence distinguishes between the soft gap ($k\geq2$) and the pseudogap ($k<2$) regimes. Both $k$ and the effective gap scale with the hopping integral and the $e$-$e$ interaction in a wide doping range. The motion of doped holes is confined by the closest defect potential and the overall spin-orbital structure. Such a generic behavior leads to complex non-hydrogen-like defect states that tend to preserve the underlying $C$-type spin and $G$-type orbital order and can be detected and analyzed via scanning tunneling microscopy.

Entanglement Driven Phase Transitions in Spin-Orbital Models

To demonstrate the role played by the von Neumann entropy spectra in quantum phase transitions we investigate the one-dimensional anisotropic SU(2)$\otimes XXZ$ spin-orbital model with negative exchange parameter. In the case of classical Ising orbital interactions we discover an unexpected novel phase with Majumdar-Ghosh-like spin-singlet dimer correlations triggered by spin-orbital entanglement and having $k=π/2$ orbital correlations, while all the other phases are disentangled. For anisotropic $XXZ$ orbital interactions both spin-orbital entanglement and spin-dimer correlations extend to the antiferro-spin/alternating-orbital phase. This quantum phase provides a unique example of two coupled order parameters which change the character of the phase transition from first-order to continuous. Hereby we have established the von Neumann entropy spectral function as a valuable tool to identify the change of ground state degeneracies and of the spin-orbital entanglement of elementary excitations in quantum phase transitions.

Fermi-liquid Landau parameters for a nondegenerate band: Spin and charge instabilities in the extended Hubbard model

We investigate the Landau parameters for the instabilities in spin and charge channels in the nondegenerate extended Hubbard model with intersite Coulomb and exchange interactions. To this aim we use the spin rotationally invariant slave boson approach and we determine the necessary inverse propagator matrix. The analytically derived spin Landau parameter $F_0^a$ for the half filled band uncovers the intrinsic instability of the nondegenerate Hubbard model towards ferromagnetism --- negative intersite exchange interaction triggers a ferromagnetic instability at half filling before the metal-insulator transition, indicated by the divergence of the magnetic susceptibility at $F_0^a=-1$. This result is general and the instability occurs in the strongly correlated metallic regime for any lattice, in three or two dimensions. Next as an illustrative example we present numerical results obtained for the cubic lattice with nearest neighbor exchange $J$ and Coulomb $V$ elements and arbitrary electron density. One finds that the range of small doping near half filling is the most unstable one towards spin polarization, but only in the case of ferromagnetic intersite exchange $J<0$. Charge Landau parameter $F_0^s$ is lowered near half filling by increasing $U$ when the intersite Coulomb interaction $V$ is attractive, but in contrast to $F_0^a$ at $J<0$ it requires an attraction beyond a critical value $V_c$ to generate the divergence of the charge susceptibility at $F_0^s=-1$ in the metallic phase. This instability was found for a broad range of electronic filling away from half filling for moderate attraction.

Novel Spin-Orbital Phases Induced by Orbital Dilution

We demonstrate that magnetic $3d$ impurities with $S=3/2$ spins and no orbital degree of freedom induce changes of spin-orbital order in a $4d^4$ Mott insulator with $S=1$ spins. Impurities act either as spin defects which decouple from the surrounding ions, or trigger orbital polarons along $3d$-$4d$ bonds. The $4d$-$4d$ superexchange in the host $J_{\rm host}$ competes with $3d$-$4d$ superexchange $J_{\rm imp}$ --- it depends on which orbital is doubly occupied. The spin-orbital order within the host is totally modified at doping $x=1/4$. Our findings provide new perspective for future theoretical and experimental studies of doped transition-metal oxides.

Polaron states in a CuO chain

We introduce a one-dimensional model for a CuO chain, with holes and $S=1/2$ spins localized in $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals, and $p_σ$ oxygen orbitals without holes in the ground state. We consider a single hole doped at an oxygen site and study its propagation by spin-flip processes. We develop the Green's function method and treat the hole-spin coupling in the self-consistent Born approximation, similar to that successfully used to study polarons in the regular $t$-$J$ model. We present an analytical solution of the problem and investigate whether the numerical integration is a good approximation to this solution.

Quantum entanglement in the one-dimensional spin-orbital SU(2)$\otimes XXZ$ model

We investigate the phase diagram and the spin-orbital entanglement of a one-dimensional SU(2)$\otimes XXZ$ model with SU(2) spin exchange and anisotropic $XXZ$ orbital exchange interactions and negative exchange coupling. As a unique feature, the spin-orbital entanglement entropy in the entangled ground states increases here linearly with system size. In the case of Ising orbital interactions we identify an emergent phase with long-range spin-singlet dimer correlations triggered by a quadrupling of correlations in the orbital sector. The peculiar translational invariant spin-singlet dimer phase has finite von Neumann entanglement entropy and survives when orbital quantum fluctuations are included. It even persists in the isotropic SU(2)$\otimes$SU(2) limit. Surprisingly, for finite transverse orbital coupling the long-range spin singlet correlations also coexist in the antiferromagnetic spin and alternating orbital phase making this phase also unconventional. Moreover we also find a complementary orbital singlet phase that exists in the isotropic case but does not extend to the Ising limit. The nature of entanglement appears essentially different from that found in the frequently discussed model with positive coupling. Furthermore we investigate the collective spin and orbital wave excitations of the disentangled ferromagnetic-spin/ferro-orbital ground state and explore the continuum of spin-orbital excitations. Interestingly one finds among the latter excitations two modes of exciton bound states. Their spin-orbital correlations differ from the remaining continuum states and exhibit logarithmic scaling of the von Neumann entropy with increasing system size.

Quantum phase transitions in the Kitaev--Heisenberg model on a single hexagon

We present a detailed analysis of the Kitaev--Heisenberg model on a single hexagon. The energy spectra and spin--spin correlations obtained using exact diagonalisation indicate quantum phase transitions between antiferromagnetic and anisotropic spin correlations when the Kitaev interactions increase. In cluster mean-field approach frustrated nearest neighbor exchange stabilizes the stripe phase in between the Néel phase and frustrated one which evolves towards the Kitaev spin liquid.

Spin-Orbital Order Modified by Orbital Dilution in Transition Metal Oxides: From Spin Defects to Frustrated Spins Polarizing Host Orbitals

We study the $3d$ substitution in $4d$ transition metal oxides in the cases of $3d^3$ doping at either $3d^2$ or $4d^4$ sites which realize orbital dilution. We derive the effective $3d-4d$ (or $3d-3d$) superexchange in a Mott insulator with different ionic valencies, underlining the emerging structure of the spin-orbital coupling between the impurity and the host sites and demonstrate that it is qualitatively different from that encountered in the host itself. This derivation shows that the interaction between the host and the impurity depends in a crucial way on the type of doubly occupied $t_{2g}$ orbital. One finds that in some cases, due to the quench of the orbital degree of freedom at the $3d$ impurity, the spin and orbital order within the host is drastically modified by doping. The impurity acts either as a spin defect accompanied by an orbital vacancy in the spin-orbital structure when the host-impurity coupling is weak, or it favors doubly occupied active orbitals (orbital polarons) along the $3d-4d$ bond leading to antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic spin coupling. This competition between different magnetic couplings leads to quite different ground states. We find that magnetic frustration and spin degeneracy can be lifted by the quantum orbital flips of the host but they are robust in special regions of the incommensurate phase diagram. The spin-orbit coupling can lead to anisotropic spin and orbital patterns along the symmetry directions and cause a radical modification of the order imposed by the spin-orbital superexchange. Our findings are expected to be of importance for future theoretical understanding of experimental results for doped $4d$ transition metal oxides doped with $3d^3$ ions. We suggest how the local or global changes of the spin-orbital order induced by such impurities could be detected experimentally.

Exact treatment of magnetism-driven ferroelectricity in the one-dimensional compass model

We consider a class of one-dimensional compass models with antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction in an external magnetic field. Based on the exact solution derived by means of Jordan-Wigner transformation, we study the excitation gap, spin correlations, ground-state degeneracy, and critical properties at phase transitions. The phase diagram at finite electric and magnetic field consists of three phases: ferromagnetic, canted antiferromagnetic, and chiral. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction induces an electrical polarization in the ground state of the chiral phase, where the nonlocal string order and special features of entanglement spectra arise, while strong chiral correlations emerge at finite temperature in the other phases and are controlled by a gap between the nonchiral ground state and the chiral excitations. We further show that the magnetoelectric effects in all phases disappear above a typical temperature corresponding to the total bandwidth of the effective fermionic model. To this end we explore the entropy, specific heat, magnetization, electric polarization, and the magnetoelectric tensor at finite temperature. We identify rather peculiar specific-heat and polarization behavior of the compass model which follows from highly frustrated interactions.

Exotic Spin Order due to Orbital Fluctuations

We investigate the phase diagrams of the spin-orbital $d^9$ Kugel-Khomskii model for increasing system dimensionality: from the square lattice monolayer, via the bilayer to the cubic lattice. In each case we find strong competition between different types of spin and orbital order, with entangled spin-orbital phases at the crossover from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic correlations in the intermediate regime of Hund's exchange. These phases have various types of exotic spin order and are stabilized by effective interactions of longer range which follow from enhanced spin-orbital fluctuations. We find that orbital order is in general more robust and spin order melts first under increasing temperature, as observed in several experiments for spin-orbital systems.

Frustration and Entanglement in Compass and Spin-Orbital Models

We review the consequences of intrinsic frustration of the orbital superexchange and of spin-orbital entanglement. While Heisenberg perturbing interactions remove frustration in the compass model, the lowest columnar excitations are robust in the nanoscopic compass clusters and might be used for quantum computations. Entangled spin-orbital states determine the ground states in some cases, while in others concern excited states and lead to measurable consequences, as in the $R$VO$_3$ perovskites. On-site entanglement for strong spin-orbit coupling generates the frustrated Kitaev-Heisenberg model with a rich magnetic phase diagram on the honeycomb lattice. Frustration is here reflected in hole propagation which changes from coherent in an antiferromagnet via hidden quasiparticles in zigzag and stripe phases to entirely incoherent one in the Kitaev spin liquid.

Hole propagation in the orbital compass models

We explore the propagation of a single hole in the generalized quantum compass model which interpolates between fully isotropic antiferromagnetic (AF) phase in the Ising model and nematic order of decoupled AF chains for frustrated compass interactions. We observe coherent hole motion due to either interorbital hopping or due to the three-site effective hopping, while quantum spin fluctuations in the ordered background do not play any role.

Locally tunable disorder and entanglement in the one-dimensional plaquette orbital model

We introduce a one-dimensional plaquette orbital model with a topology of a ladder and alternating interactions between $x$ and $z$ pseudospin components along both the ladder legs and on the rungs. We show that it is equivalent to an effective spin model in a magnetic field, with spin dimers that replace plaquettes and are coupled along the chain by three-spin interactions. Using perturbative treatment and mean field approaches with dimer correlations we study the ground state spin configuration and its defects in the lowest excited states. By the exact diagonalization approach we find that the quantum effects in the model are purely short-range and we get estimated values of the ground state energy and the gap in the thermodynamic limit from the system sizes up to $L=12$ dimers. Finally, we study a class of excited states with classical-like defects accumulated in the central region of the chain to find that in this region the quantum entanglement measured by the mutual information of neighboring dimers is locally increased and coincides with disorder and frustration. Such islands of entanglement in otherwise rather classical system may be of interest in the context of quantum computing devices.

Quantum phase transitions in exactly solvable one-dimensional compass models

We present an exact solution for a class of one-dimensional compass models which stand for interacting orbital degrees of freedom in a Mott insulator. By employing the Jordan-Wigner transformation we map these models on noninteracting fermions and discuss how spin correlations, high degeneracy of the ground state, and $Z_2$ symmetry in the quantum compass model are visible in the fermionic language. Considering a zigzag chain of ions with singly occupied $e_g$ orbitals ($e_g$ orbital model) we demonstrate that the orbital excitations change qualitatively with increasing transverse field, and that the excitation gap closes at the quantum phase transition to a polarized state. This phase transition disappears in the quantum compass model with maximally frustrated orbital interactions which resembles the Kitaev model. Here we find that finite transverse field destabilizes the orbital-liquid ground state with macroscopic degeneracy, and leads to peculiar behavior of the specific heat and orbital susceptibility at finite temperature. We show that the entropy and the cooling rate at finite temperature exhibit quite different behavior near the critical point for these two models.

Quantum versus classical polarons in a ferromagnetic CuO$_3$-like chain

We present an exact solution for an itinerant hole added into the oxygen orbitals of a CuO$_{3}$-like ferromagnetic chain. Using the Green's function method, the quantum polarons obtained for the Heisenberg SU(2) interaction between localized Cu spins are compared with the polarons in the Ising chain. We find that magnons with large energy are favorable towards quasiparticle existence, even in the case of relatively modest electron-magnon coupling. We observe two quasiparticle states with dispersion $\sim 2t$ each, which emerge from the incoherent continuum when the exchange coupling $J$ increases. Quantum fluctuations in the spin system modify the incoherent part of the spectrum and change the spectral function qualitatively, beyond the bands derived from the perturbation theory.

Short-Range Correlations in Magnetite above the Verwey Temperature

Magnetite, Fe$_3$O$_4$, is the first magnetic material discovered and utilized by mankind in Ancient Greece, yet it still attracts attention due to its puzzling properties. This is largely due to the quest for a full and coherent understanding of the Verwey transition that occurs at $T_V=124$ K and is associated with a drop of electric conductivity and a complex structural phase transition. A recent detailed analysis of the structure, based on single crystal diffraction, suggests that the electron localization pattern contains linear three-Fe-site units, the so-called trimerons. Here we show that whatever the electron localization pattern is, it partially survives up to room temperature as short-range correlations in the high-temperature cubic phase, easily discernible by diffuse scattering. Additionally, {\it ab initio} electronic structure calculations reveal that characteristic features in these diffuse scattering patterns can be correlated with the Fermi surface topology.

A possibility of high spin hole states in doped CoO$_2$ layered systems

We introduce and investigate an effective five-band model for $t_{2g}$ and $e_g$ electrons to describe doped cobalt oxides with Co$^{3+}$ and Co$^{4+}$ ions in two-dimensional CoO$_2$ triangular lattice layers, as in Na$_{1-x}$CoO$_2$. The effective Hamiltonian includes anisotropic kinetic energy (due to both direct Co-Co and indirect Co-O-Co hoppings), on-site Coulomb interactions parameterized by intraorbital Hubbard repulsion $U$ and full Hund's exchange tensor, crystal-field terms and Jahn-Teller static distortions. We study it using correlated wave functions on $6\times 6$ clusters with periodic boundary conditions. The computations indicate low S=0 spin to high S=2 spin abrupt transition in the undoped systems when increasing strength of the crystal field, while intermediate S=1 spins are not found. Surprisingly, for the investigated realistic Hamiltonian parameters describing low spin states in CoO$_2$ planes, doping generates high $S=\frac{5}{2}$ spins at Co$^{4+}$ ions that are pairwise bound into singlets, seen here as pairs of up and down spins. It is found that such singlet pairs self-organize at higher doping into lines of spins with coexisting antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic bonds, forming stripe-like structures. The ground states are insulating within the investigated range of doping because computed HOMO-LUMO gaps are never small enough.

Exact spectral function for hole-magnon coupling in the ferromagnetic CuO$_3$-like chain

We present the exact spectral function for a single oxygen hole with spin opposite to ferromagnetic order within a one-dimensional CuO$_{3}$-like spin chain. We find that local Kondo-like exchange interaction generates five different states in the strong coupling regime. It stabilizes a spin polaron which is a bound state of a moving charge dressed by magnon excitations, with essentially the same dispersion as predicted by mean field theory. We then examine in detail the evolution of the spectral function for increasing strength of the hole-magnon interaction. We also demonstrate that the $s$ and $p$ symmetry of orbital states in the conduction band are essentially equivalent to each other and find that the simplified models do not suffice to reproduce subtle aspects of hole-magnon coupling in the charge-transfer model.

Exotic spin orders driven by orbital fluctuations in the Kugel-Khomskii model

We study zero temperature phase diagram of the three-dimensional Kugel-Khomskii model on a cubic lattice using the cluster mean field theory and different perturbative expansions in the orbital sector. The phase diagram is rich, goes beyond the single-site mean field theory due to spin-orbital entanglement. In addition to the antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) phases, one finds also a plaquette valence-bond phase with singlets ordered either on horizontal or vertical bonds. More importantly, for increasing Hund's exchange we identify three phases with exotic magnetic order stabilized by orbital fluctuations in between the AF and FM order: (i) an AF phase with two mutually orthogonal antiferromagnets on two sublattices in each $ab$ plane and AF order along the c axis (ortho-$G$-type phase), (ii) a canted-$A$-type AF phase with a non-trivial canting angle between nearest neighbor FM layers along the c axis, and (iii) a striped-AF phase with anisotropic AF order in the $ab$ planes. We elucidate the mechanism responsible for each of the above phases by deriving effective spin models which involve second and third neighbor Heisenberg interactions as well as four-site spin interactions going beyond Heisenberg physics, and explain how the entangled nearest neighbor spin-orbital superexchange generates spin interactions between more distant spins.

Mechanism of hole propagation in the orbital compass models

We explore the propagation of a single hole in the quantum compass model, whose nematic ground state is given by mutually decoupled antiferromagnetic chains. The compass model can be seen as the strong-coupling limit of a spinless two-band Hubbard model, which we study here using mean field theory and the variational cluster approach. Due to the symmetries of the compass model, the inherent disorder along one lattice direction turns out not to affect hole motion and doping a hole consequently does not lift the subextensive degeneracy of the nematic phase. In order to broaden and deepen understanding, we derive a generalized itinerant model and address the transition to two-dimensional Ising order. We observe coherent hole motion in both the nematic and the antiferromagnetic phases, also in the presence of quantum fluctuations away from pure Ising exchange. In addition to quantum fluctuations and interorbital hopping, three-site hopping is found to play an important role and to dominate propagation in the two-dimensional Ising limit as well as along the antiferromagnetic chains in the nematic order which forms in the compass model.

Strong Effects of Cation Vacancies on the Electronic and Dynamical Properties of FeO

We report pronounced modifications of electronic and vibrational properties induced in FeO by cation vacancies, obtained within density functional theory incorporating strong local Coulomb interactions at Fe atoms. The insulating gap of FeO is reduced by about 50% due to unoccupied electronic bands introduced by trivalent Fe ions stabilized by cation vacancies. The changes in the electronic structure along with atomic displacements induced by cation vacancies affect strongly phonon dispersions via modified force constants, including those at atoms beyond nearest neighbors of defects. We demonstrate that theoretical phonon dispersions and their densities of states reproduce the results of inelastic neutron and nuclear resonant x-ray scattering experiments \emph{only} when Fe vacancies and Coulomb interaction $U$ are both included explicitly in \emph{ab initio} simulations, which also suggests that the electron-phonon coupling in FeO is strong.

Symmetry properties and spectra of the two-dimensional quantum compass model

We use exact symmetry properties of the two-dimensional quantum compass model to derive nonequivalent invariant subspaces in the energy spectra of $L\times L$ clusters up to L=6. The symmetry allows one to reduce the original $L\times L$ compass cluster to the $(L-1)\times (L-1)$ one with modified interactions. This step is crucial and enables: (i) exact diagonalization of the $6\times 6$ quantum compass cluster, and (ii) finding the specific heat for clusters up to L=6, with two characteristic energy scales. We investigate the properties of the ground state and the first excited states and present extrapolation of the excitation energy with increasing system size. Our analysis provides physical insights into the nature of nematic order realized in the quantum compass model at finite temperature. We suggest that the quantum phase transition at the isotropic interaction point is second order with some admixture of the discontinuous transition, as indicated by the entropy, the overlap between two types of nematic order (on horizontal and vertical bonds) and the existence of the critical exponent. Extrapolation of the specific heat to the $L\to\infty$ limit suggests the classical nature of the quantum compass model and high degeneracy of the ground state with nematic order.

Topological Order in an Entangled SU(2)$\otimes$XY Spin-Orbital Ring

We present rigorous topological order which emerges in a one-dimensional spin-orbital model due to the ring topology. Although an exact solution of a spin-orbital ring with SU(2) spin and XY orbital interactions separates spins from orbitals by means of a unitary transformation, the spins are not independent when the ring is closed, but form two half-rings carrying opposite pseudomomenta. We show that an inverse transformation back to the physical degrees of freedom entangles the spin half-rings with the orbitals once again. This surprising correlation arises on changing the topology from an open to a closed chain, which reduces the degeneracy of the ground-state manifold, leaving in it only the states in which pseudomomenta compensate each other.

Possibility of such entangled phases in a monolayer is under investigation at present.

Fingerprints of spin-orbital entanglement in transition metal oxides

The concept of spin-orbital entanglement on superexchange bonds in transition metal oxides is introduced and explained on several examples. It is shown that spin-orbital entanglement in superexchange models destabilizes the long-range (spin and orbital) order and may lead either to a disordered spin-liquid state or to novel phases at low temperature which arise from strongly frustrated interactions. Such novel ground states cannot be described within the conventionally used mean field theory which separates spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Even in cases where the ground states are disentangled, spin-orbital entanglement occurs in excited states and may become crucial for a correct description of physical properties at finite temperature. As an important example of this behaviour we present spin-orbital entanglement in the $R$VO$_3$ perovskites, with $R$=La,Pr,...,Yb,Lu, where such finite temperature properties of these compounds can be understood only using entangled states: ($i$) thermal evolution of the optical spectral weights, ($ii$) the dependence of transition temperatures for the onset of orbital and magnetic order on the ionic radius in the phase diagram of the $R$VO$_3$ perovskites, and ($iii$) dimerization observed in the magnon spectra for the $C$-type antiferromagnetic phase of YVO$_3$. Finally, it is shown that joint spin-orbital excitations in an ordered phase with coexisting antiferromagnetic and alternating orbital order introduces topological constraints for the hole propagation and will thus radically modify transport properties in doped Mott insulators where hole motion implies simultaneous spin and orbital excitations.

Noncollinear Magnetic Order Stabilized by Entangled Spin-Orbital Fluctuations

Quantum phase transitions in the two-dimensional Kugel-Khomski model on a square lattice are studied using the plaquette mean field theory and the entanglement renormalization ansatz. When $3z^2-r^2$ orbitals are favored by the crystal field and Hund's exchange is finite, both methods give a noncollinear exotic magnetic order which consists of four sublattices with mutually orthogonal nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic second neighbor spins. We derive effective frustrated spin model with second and third neighbor spin interactions which stabilize this phase and follow from spin-orbital quantum fluctuations involving spin singlets entangled with orbital excitations.

Optical conductivity due to orbital polarons in systems with orbital degeneracy

We consider the impact of orbital polarons in doped orbitally ordered systems on optical conductivity using the simplest generic model capturing the directional nature of either $t_{2g}$ (or $e_g$) orbital states in certain transition metal oxides, or $p$ orbital states of cold atoms in optical lattices. The origin of the optical transitions is analyzed in detail and we demonstrate that the optical spectra: (i) are determined by the string picture, i.e., flipped orbitals along the hole hopping path, and (ii) consist of three narrow peaks which stem from distinct excitations. They occur within the Mott-Hubbard gap similar to the superconducting cuprates but indicate hole confinement, in contrast to the spin t-J model. Finally, we point out how to use the point group symmetry to classify the optical transitions.

Stripes and Pairing in High Temperature Superconductors

We review briefly several approaches used to investigate the stability of stripe phases in high temperature superconductors, where charge inhomogeneities arise from competing kinetic and magnetic energies. The mechanism of stripe formation, their consequences for the normal state and enhancement of pairing interaction triggered by charge inhomogeneities are briefly summarized. Finally, we demonstrate that orbital degeneracy ($i$) leads to a more subtle mechanism of stripe formation, and ($ii$) plays an important role and determines the symmetry of the superconducting state in pnictides.

Von Neumann Entropy Spectra and Entangled Excitations in Spin-Orbital Models

We consider the low-energy excitations of one-dimensional spin-orbital models which consist of spin waves, orbital waves, and joint spin-orbital excitations. Among the latter we identify strongly entangled spin-orbital bound states which appear as peaks in the von Neumann entropy (vNE) spectral function introduced in this work. The strong entanglement of bound states is manifested by a universal logarithmic scaling of the vNE with system size, while the vNE of other spin-orbital excitations saturates. We suggest that spin-orbital entanglement can be experimentally explored by the measurement of the dynamical spin-orbital correlations using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, where strong spin-orbit coupling associated with the core hole plays a role.

Entangled spin-orbital phases in the bilayer Kugel-Khomskii model

We derive the Kugel-Khomskii spin-orbital (SO) model for a bilayer and investigate its phase diagram depending on Hund's exchange $J_H$ and the $e_g$ orbital splitting $E_z$. In the (classical) mean-field approach with on-site spin $<S_i^z>$ and orbital $<τ_i^z>$ order parameters and factorized spin-and-orbital degrees of freedom, we demonstrate a competition between the phases with either $G$-type or $A$-type antiferromagnetic (AF) or ferromagnetic long-range order. Next we develop a Bethe-Peierls-Weiss method with a Lanczos exact diagonalization of a cube coupled to its neighbors in $ab$ planes by the mean-field terms --- this approach captures quantum fluctuations on the bonds which decide about the nature of disordered phases in the highly frustrated regime near the orbital degeneracy. We show that the long-range spin order is unstable in a large part of the phase diagram which contains then six phases, including also the valence-bond phase with interlayer spin singlets stabilized by holes in $3z^2-r^2$ orbitals (VB$z$ phase), a disordered plaquette valence-bond (PVB) phase and a crossover phase between the VB$z$ and the $A$-type AF phase. When on-site SO coupling is also included by the $<S_i^zτ_i^z>$ order parameter, we discover in addition two entangled phases which compete with $A$-type AF phase and another crossover phase in between the $G$-AF phase with occupied $x^2-y^2$ orbitals and the PVB phase. Thus, the present bilayer model provides an example of SO entanglement which generates novel disordered phases. We analyze the order parameters in all phases and identify situations where SO entanglement is crucial and factorization of the spins and orbitals leads to qualitatively incorrect results. We point out that SO entanglement may play a role in a bilayer fluoride K$_3$Cu$_2$F$_7$ which is a realization of the VB$z$ phase.

Jahn-Teller mechanism of stripe formation in doped layered La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_4$ nickelates

We introduce an effective model for $e_g$ electrons to describe quasi-two-dimensional layered La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_4$ nickelates and study it using correlated wave functions on $8 \times 8 $ and $6 \times 6 $ clusters. The effective Hamiltonian includes the kinetic energy, on-site Coulomb interactions for $e_g$ electrons (intraorbital $U$ and Hund's exchange $J_H$) and the coupling between $e_g$ electrons and Jahn-Teller distortions (static modes). The experimental ground state phases with inhomogeneous charge, spin and orbital order at the dopings $x=1/3$ and $x=1/2$ are reproduced very well by the model. Although the Jahn-Teller distortions are weak, we show that they play a crucial role and stabilize the observed cooperative charge, magnetic and orbital order in form of a diagonal stripe phase at $x=1/3$ doping and a checkerboard phase at $x=1/2$ doping.

Spin-orbital resonating valence bond liquid on a triangular lattice: Evidence from finite-cluster diagonalization

We investigate the ground state of the $d^1$ spin-orbital model for triply degenerate $t_{2g}$ orbitals on a triangular lattice which unifies intrinsic frustration of spin and orbital interactions with geometrical frustration. Using full or Lanczos exact diagonalization of finite clusters we establish that the ground state of the spin-orbital model which interpolates between the superexchange and direct exchange interactions on the bonds is characterized by valence-bond correlations. In the absence of Hund's exchange the model describes a competition between various possible valence-bond states. By considering the clusters with open boundary conditions we demonstrate that orbital interactions are always frustrated, but this frustration is removed by pronounced spin singlet correlations which coexist with supporting them dimer orbital correlations. Such local configurations contribute to the disordered ground states found for the clusters with periodic boundary conditions which interpolate between a highly resonating, dimer-based, entangled spin-orbital liquid phase, and a valence-bond state with completely static spin-singlet states. We argue that these states are also realized for the infinite lattice and anticipate that pronounced transitions between different regimes found for particular geometries will turn out to smooth crossovers in the properties of the spin-orbital liquid in the thermodynamic limit. Finally, we provide evidence that the resonating spin-orbital liquid phase involves entangled states on the bonds. In such a phase classical considerations based on the mean-field theory cannot be used, spin exchange interactions do not determine spin bond correlations, and quantum fluctuations play a crucial role in the ground states and magnetic transitions.

{\it Ab initio} calculations of magnetic structure and lattice dynamics of Fe/Pt multilayers

The magnetization distribution, its energetic characterization by the interlayer coupling constants and lattice dynamics of (001)-oriented Fe/Pt multilayers are investigated using density functional theory combined with the direct method to determine phonon frequencies. It is found that ferromagnetic order between consecutive Fe layers is favoured, with the enhanced magnetic moments at the interface. The bilinear and biquadratic coupling coefficients between Fe layers are shown to saturate fast with increasing thickness of nonmagnetic Pt layers which separate them. The phonon calculations demonstrate a rather strong dependence of partial iron phonon densities of states on the actual position of Fe monolayer in the multilayer structure.

Charge Density Wave in Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$

Recent experimental results [A. Rusydi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 016403 (2006)] revealed the stability of a peculiar charge density wave (CDW) with odd period (three or five) in the coupled Cu$_2$O$_5$ spin ladders in Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$, while the CDW with even period is unstable. Here we resolve this contradiction by solving the effective t-J model for the two coupled chains supplemented by the intersite interaction term V. Crucial to this finding is the novel interaction term V (responsible for the interladder repulsion between nearest neighbor holes), which is derived from the on-site Hubbard-like repulsion between electrons on the same oxygen sites but within two distinct orbitals which belong to two neighboring Cu$_2$O$_5$ ladders in the charge transfer model.

Hidden dimer order in the quantum compass model

We introduce an exact spin transformation that maps frustrated Z_{i,j}Z_{i,j+1} and X_{i,j}X_{i+1,j} spin interactions along the rows and columns of the quantum compass model (QCM) on an LxL square lattice to (L-1)x(L-1) quantum spin models with 2(L-1) classical spins. Using the symmetry properties we unravel the hidden dimer order in the QCM, with equal two-dimer correlations <X_{i,i}X_{i+1,i}X_{k,l}X_{k+1,l}> and <X_{i,i}X_{i+1,i}X_{l,k}X_{l+1,k}> in the ground state, which is independent of the actual interactions. This order coexists with Ising-type spin correlations which decay with distance.

Jahn-Teller distortions and the magnetic order in the perovskite manganites

We introduce an effective model for $e_g$ electrons to describe three-dimensional perovskite (La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ and La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_3$) manganites and study the magnetic and orbital order on $4\times 4\times 4$ cluster using correlated wave functions. The model includes the kinetic energy, and on-site Coulomb interactions for $e_g$ electrons, antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction between $S=3/2$ core spins, and the coupling between $e_g$ electrons and Jahn-Teller modes. The model reproduces the experimentally observed magnetic order: ($i$) $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase in the undoped insulator LaMnO$_3$, with alternating $e_g$ orbitals and with small Jahn-Teller distortions, changing to a conducting phase at 32 GPa pressure, and ($ii$) ferromagnetic order in one-eight doped La$_{7/8}$Sr$_{1/8}$MnO$_3$ and in quarter doped La$_{3/4}$Sr$_{1/4}$MnO$_3$ compounds. For half-doped La$_{1/2}$Ca$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ one finds a competition between a ferromagnetic conductor and the CE insulating phase; the latter is stabilized by the Jahn-Teller coupling being twice larger than for the strontium-doped compound. Altogether, there is a subtle balance between all Hamiltonian parameters and the phase diagram is quite sensitive to the precise values they take.

Orbital fluctuations in the $R$VO$_3$ perovskites

The properties of Mott insulators with orbital degrees of freedom are described by spin-orbital superexchange models, which provide a theoretical framework for understanding their magnetic and optical properties. We introduce such a model derived for $(xy)^1(yz/zx)^1$ configuration of V$^{3+}$ ions in the $R$VO$_3$ perovskites, $R$=Lu,Yb,$\cdots$,La, and demonstrate that $\{yz,zx\}$ orbital fluctuations along the $c$ axis are responsible for the huge magnetic and optical anisotropies observed in the almost perfectly cubic compound LaVO$_3$. We argue that the GdFeO$_3$ distortion and the large difference in entropy of $C$-AF and $G$-AF phases is responsible for the second magnetic transition observed at $T_{N2}$ in YVO$_3$. Next we address the variation of orbital and magnetic transition temperature, $T_{\rm OO}$ and $T_{N1}$, in the $R$VO$_3$ perovskites, after extending the spin-orbital model by the crystal-field and the orbital interactions which arise from the GdFeO$_3$ and Jahn-Teller distortions of the VO$_6$ octahedra. We further find that the orthorhombic distortion which increases from LaVO$_3$ to LuVO$_3$ plays a crucial role by controlling the orbital fluctuations, and via the modified orbital correlations influences the onset of both magnetic and orbital order.

t-J model of coupled Cu$_2$O$_5$ ladders in Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$

Starting from the proper charge transfer model for Cu$_2$O$_5$ coupled ladders in Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ we derive the low energy Hamiltonian for this system. It occurs that the widely used ladder t-J model is not sufficient and has to be supplemented by the Coulomb repulsion term between holes in the neighboring ladders. Furthermore, we show how a simple mean-field solution of the derived t-J model may explain the onset of the charge density wave with the odd period in Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$.
