Quantum phases of spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupled bosonic gases in optical lattices

Spin-orbit coupling plays an important role in understanding exotic quantum phases. In this work, we present a scheme to combine spin-orbital-angular-momentum (SOAM) coupling and strong correlations in ultracold atomic gases. Essential ingredients of this setting is the interplay of SOAM coupling and Raman-induced spin-flip hopping, engineered by lasers that couples different hyperfine spin states. In the presence of SOAM coupling only, we find rich quantum phases in the Mott-insulating regime, which support different types of spin defects such as spin vortex and composite vortex with antiferromagnetic core surrounded by the outer spin vortex. Based on an effective exchange model, we find that these competing spin textures are a result of the interplay of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and Heisenberg exchange interactions. In the presence of both SOAM coupling and Raman-induced spin-flip hopping, more many-body phases appear, including canted-antiferromagnetic and stripe phases. Our prediction suggests that SOAM coupling could induce rich exotic many-body phases in the strongly interacting regime.

Controlling higher-orbital quantum phases of ultracold atoms via coupling to optical cavities

Orbital degree of freedom plays an important role in understanding exotic phenomena of strongly correlated materials. We study strongly correlated ultracold bosonic gases coupled to a high-finesse cavity, pumped by a blue-detuned laser in the transverse direction. Based on an extended Bose-Hubbard model with parameters adapted to recent experiments, we find that by tuning the reflection of pump laser, atoms can be selectively transferred to the odd-parity $p$-orbital, or to even-parity $d$-orbital band of a two-dimensional square lattice, accompanied with cavity-photon excitations. By interacting with cavity field, atoms self-organize to form stable higher-orbital superfluid and Mott-insulating phases with orbital-density waves, as a result of cavity induced orbital-flip processes. Our study opens the route to manipulate orbital degrees of freedom in strongly correlated quantum gases via coupling to optical cavities.

Magnetisms of spinor alkali and alkaline-earth atoms in optical lattices

We theoretically investigate zero-temperature magnetic ordering of mixtures of spin-1 (alkali atoms) and spin-0 (alkaline-earth atoms) bosons in a three-dimensional optical lattice. With the single-mode approximation for the spin-1 bosons, we obtain an effective Bose-Hubbard model for describing the heteronuclear mixtures in optical lattices. By controlling the interspecies interactions between alkali and alkaline-earth atoms, we map out complete phase diagrams of the system with both positive and negative spin-dependent interactions for spin-1 atoms, based on bosonic dynamical mean-field theory. We find that the spin-1 components feature ferromagnetic and nematic insulating phases, in addition to the superfluid, depending on spin-dependent interactions. Take the spin-1 alkali bosons as spin $\uparrow$, and spin-0 alkaline-earth bosons as spin $\downarrow$, we observe that the system favors ferromagnetic insulator at filling $n=1$, and unorder insulator at $n=2$. Interestingly, we observe a two-step Mott-insulating-superfluid phase transition, as a result of mass imbalance between alkali and alkaline-earth atoms.

Many-body chiral edge currents and sliding phases of atomic spinwaves in momentum-space lattice

Collective excitations (spinwaves) of long-lived atomic hyperfine states can be synthesized into a Bose-Hubbard model in momentum space. We explore many-body ground states and dynamics of a two-leg momentum-space lattice formed by two coupled hyperfine states. Essential ingredients of this setting are a staggered artificial magnetic field engineered by lasers that couple the spinwave states, and a state-dependent long-range interaction, which is induced by laser-dressing a hyperfine state to a Rydberg state. The Rydberg dressed two-body interaction gives rise to a state-dependent blockade in momentum space, and can amplify staggered flux induced anti-chiral edge currents in the many-body ground state in the presence of magnetic flux. When the Rydberg dressing is applied to both hyperfine states, exotic sliding insulating and superfluid/supersolid phases emerge. Due to the Rydberg dressed long-range interaction, spinwaves slide along a leg of the momentum-space lattice without costing energy. Our study paves a route to the quantum simulation of topological phases and exotic dynamics with interacting spinwaves of atomic hyperfine states in momentum-space lattice.

Quench dynamics of Rydberg-dressed bosons on two-dimensional square lattices

We study the dynamics of bosonic atoms on a two-dimensional square lattice, where atomic interactions are long-ranged with either a box or soft-core shape. The latter can be realized through laser dressing ground-state atoms to electronically excited Rydberg states. When the range of interactions is equal or larger than the lattice constant, the system is governed by an extended Bose-Hubbard model. We propose a quench process by varying the atomic hopping linearly across phase boundaries of the Mott insulator-supersolid and supersolid-superfluid phases. Starting from a Mott insulating state, the dynamical evolution of the superfluid order parameter exhibits a universal behaviour at the early stage, largely independent of interactions. The dynamical evolution is significantly altered by strong, long-range interactions at later times. Particularly, we demonstrate that density wave excitation is important when the quench rate is small. Moreover, we show that the quench dynamics can be analyzed through time-of-flight images, i.e., measuring the momentum distribution and noise correlations.

Analysis of interference in attosecond transient absorption in adiabatic condition

We simulate the transient absorption of attosecond pulses of infrared-laser-dressed atoms by considering a three-level system with the adiabatic approximation. The delay-dependent interference features are investigated from the perspective of the coherent interaction processes between the attosecond pulse and the quasi-harmonics. We find that many features of the interference fringes in the absorption spectra of the attosecond pulse can be attributed to the coherence phase difference. However, the modulation signals of laser-induced sidebands of the dark state is found related to the population dynamics of the dark state by the dressing field.

Magnetic phase transitions of spin-1 ultracold bosons in a cubic optical lattice

We investigate strongly correlated spin-1 ultracold bosons with antiferromagnetic interactions in a cubic optical lattice, based on bosonic dynamical mean-field theory. Rich phase diagrams of the system are mapped out at both zero and finite temperature, and in particular the existence of a spin-singlet condensate is established. Interestingly, at finite temperature, we find that the superfluid can be heated into a Mott insulator with even (odd) filling via a first- (second-) order phase transition, analogous to the Pomeranchuk effect in $^{3}$He. Moreover, for typical experimental setups, we estimate the critical temperatures for different ordered phases and our results suggest that direct experimental observation of these phases is promising.

Quantum coherence in the dynamical excitation, ionization, and decaying of neon gas induced by X-ray laser

We develop a large scale quantum master equation approach to describe dynamical processes of practical open quantum systems driven by both coherent and stochastic interactions by including more than one thousand true states of the systems, motivated by the development of highly bright and fully coherent lasers in the X-ray wavelength regime. The method combines the processes of coherent dynamics induced by the X-ray laser and incoherent relaxations due to spontaneous emissions, Auger decays, and electronic collisions. As examples, theoretical investigation of {\it real} coherent dynamics of inner-shell electrons of a neon gas, irradiated by a high-intensity X-ray laser with a full temporal coherence, is carried out with the approach. In contrast to the rate equation treatment, we find that coherence can suppress the multiphoton absorptions of a neon gas in the ultra-intense X-ray pulse, due to coherence-induced Rabi oscillations and power broadening effects. We study the influence of coherence on ionization processes of neon, and directly prove that sequential single-photon processes for both outer- and inner-shell electrons dominate the ionizations for the recently typical experiments with a laser intensity of $\approx10^{18}$ ${\rm W/cm^2}$. We discuss possible experimental implementations such as signatures for coherent evolution of inner-shell electrons via resonance fluorescence processes. The approach can also be applied to many different practical open quantum systems in atomic, quantum optical, and cold matter systems, which are treated qualitatively by a few-level master equation model before.

Anisotropic pair-superfluidity of trapped two-component Bose gases

We theoretically investigate the pair-superfluid phase of two-component ultracold gases with negative inter-species interactions in an optical lattice. We establish the phase diagram for filling $n=1$ at zero and finite temperature, by applying Bosonic Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, and confirm the stability of pair-superfluidity for asymmetric hopping of the two species. While the pair superfluid is found to be robust in the presence of a harmonic trap, we observe that it is destroyed already by a small population imbalance of the two species.

Experimental realization of large-alphabet quantum key distribution protocol using orbital angular momentum entanglement

We experimentally demonstrate a quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol using photon pairs entangled in orbit angular momentum (OAM). In our protocol, Alice and Bob modulate their OAM states on each entangled pair with spatial light modulators (SLMs), respectively. Alice uses a fixed phase hologram in her SLM, while Bob designs $N$ different suitable phase holograms and uses them to represent his $N$-based information in his SLM. With coincidences, Alice can fully retrieve the key stream sent by Bob without information reconciliation or privacy amplification. We report the experiment results with N=3 and the sector states with OAM eigenmodes l=1 and l=-1. Our experiment shows that the coincidence rates are in relatively distinct value regions for the three different key elements. Alice could recover fully Bob's keys by the protocol. Finally, we discuss the security of the protocol both form the light way and against the general attacks.

Quantum phases of Bose-Bose mixtures on a triangular lattice

We investigate the zero temperature quantum phases of a Bose-Bose mixture on a triangular lattice using Bosonic Dynamical Mean Field Theory (BDMFT). We consider the case of total filling one where geometric frustration arises for asymmetric hopping. We map out a rich ground state phase diagram including xy-ferromagnetic, spin-density wave, superfluid, and supersolid phases. In particular, we identify a stripe spin-density wave phase for highly asymmetric hopping. On top of the spin-density wave, we find that the system generically shows weak charge (particle) density wave order.

Tunable anisotropic magnetism in trapped two-component Bose gases

We theoretically address magnetic ordering at zero and finite temperature in both homogeneous and trapped Bose-Bose mixtures in optical lattices. By using Bosonic Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, we obtain the phase diagram of the homogeneous two-component Bose-Hubbard model in a three-dimensional (3D) cubic lattice, which features competing magnetic order of XY-ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic type in addition to the Mott and superfluid states. We show that these magnetic phases persist also in the presence of a harmonic trap.
