Optimizing Ghost Imaging via Analysis and Design of Speckle Patterns

We study the influence rules of the speckle size of light source on ghost imaging, and propose a new type of speckle patterns to improve the quality of ghost imaging. The results show that the image quality will first increase and then decrease with the increase of the speckle size, and there is an optimal speckle size for a specific object. Moreover, by using the random distribution of speckle positions, a new type of displacement speckle patterns is designed, and the imaging quality is better than that of the random speckle patterns. These results are of great significances for finding the best speckle patterns suitable for detecting targets, which further promotes the practical applications of ghost imaging.

Practical underwater quantum key distribution based on decoy-state BB84 protocol

Polarization encoding quantum key distribution has been proven to be a reliable method to build a secure communication system. It has already been used in inter-city fiber channel and near-earth atmosphere channel, leaving underwater channel the last barrier to conquer. Here we demonstrate a decoy-state BB84 quantum key distribution system over a water channel with a compact system design for future experiments in the ocean. In the system, a multiple-intensity modulated laser module is designed to produce the light pulses of quantum states, including signal state, decoy state and vacuum state. The classical communication and synchronization are realized by wireless optical transmission. Multiple filtering techniques and wavelength division multiplexing are further used to avoid crosstalk of different light. We test the performance of the system and obtain a final key rate of 245.6 bps with an average QBER of 1.91% over a 2.4m water channel, in which the channel attenuation is 16.35dB. Numerical simulation shows that the system can tolerate up to 21.7dB total channel loss and can still generate secure keys in 277.9m Jelov type 1 ocean channel.

Topological delocalization transitions and mobility edges in the nonreciprocal Maryland model

Non-Hermitian effects could trigger spectrum, localization and topological phase transitions in quasiperiodic lattices. We propose a non-Hermitian extension of the Maryland model, which forms a paradigm in the study of localization and quantum chaos by introducing asymmetry to its hopping amplitudes. The resulting nonreciprocal Maryland model is found to possess a real-to-complex spectrum transition at a finite amount of hopping asymmetry, through which it changes from a localized phase to a mobility edge phase. Explicit expressions of the complex energy dispersions, phase boundaries and mobility edges are found. A topological winding number is further introduced to characterize the transition between different phases. Our work introduces a unique type of non-Hermitian quasicrystal, which admits exactly obtainable phase diagrams, mobility edges, and holding no extended phases at finite nonreciprocity in the thermodynamic limit.

Dual topological characterization of non-Hermitian Floquet phases

Non-Hermiticity is expected to add far more physical features to the already rich Floquet topological phases of matter. Nevertheless, a systematic approach to characterize non-Hermitian Floquet topological matter is still lacking. In this work we introduce a dual scheme to characterize the topology of non-Hermitian Floquet systems in momentum space and in real space, using a piecewise quenched nonreciprocal Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model for our case studies. Under the periodic boundary condition, topological phases are characterized by a pair of experimentally accessible winding numbers that make jumps between integers and half-integers. Under the open boundary condition, a Floquet version of the so-called open boundary winding number is found to be integers and can predict the number of pairs of zero and $π$ Floquet edge modes coexisting with the non-Hermitian skin effect. Our results indicate that a dual characterization of non-Hermitian Floquet topological matter is necessary and also feasible because the formidable task of constructing the celebrated generalized Brillouin zone for non-Hermitian Floquet systems with multiple hopping length scales can be avoided. This work hence paves a way for further studies of non-Hermitian physics in non-equilibrium systems.

Quantum Fast Poisson Solver: the algorithm and modular circuit design

The Poisson equation has applications across many areas of physics and engineering, such as the dynamic process simulation of ocean current. Here we present a quantum Fast Poisson Solver, including the algorithm and the complete and modular circuit design. The algorithm takes the HHL algorithm as the template. The controlled rotation is performed based on the arc cotangent function which is evaluated by the Plouffe's binary expansion method. And the same method is used to compute the cosine function for the eigenvalue approximation in phase estimation. Quantum algorithms for solving square root and reciprocal functions are developed based on the non-restoring digit-recurrence method. These advances make the algorithm's complexity lower and the circuit-design more modular. The number of the qubits and operations used by the circuit are O(dlog2(ε-1)) and O(dlog3(ε-1)), respectively. We demonstrate our circuits on a quantum virtual computing system installed on the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer. This is an important step toward practical applications of quantum Fast Poisson Solver in the near-term hybrid classical/quantum devices.

Optomechanical steady state entanglement induced by electrical interaction

We propose a scheme for generating remote continuous steady-state entanglement of output light leaked from optomechanical system, in which two mechanical oscillators are coupled through long-range Coulomb interaction. we show that the entanglement of output light is affected by the detuning and the strength of the Coulomb interaction. We also demonstrate that two movable mirrors and two light beams can be entangled in the steady state. We suggest an experimental readout scheme to fully verify the characteristic of entangled state.
