$q$th-root non-Hermitian Floquet topological insulators

Floquet phases of matter have attracted great attention due to their dynamical and topological nature that are unique to nonequilibrium settings. In this work, we introduce a generic way of taking any integer $q$th-root of the evolution operator $U$ that describes Floquet topological matter. We further apply our $q$th-rooting procedure to obtain $2^n$th- and $3^n$th-root first- and second-order non-Hermitian Floquet topological insulators (FTIs). There, we explicitly demonstrate the presence of multiple edge and corner modes at fractional quasienergies $\pm(0,1,...2^{n})π/2^{n}$ and $\pm(0,1,...,3^{n})π/3^{n}$, whose numbers are highly controllable and capturable by the topological invariants of their parent systems. Notably, we observe non-Hermiticity induced fractional-quasienergy corner modes and the coexistence of non-Hermitian skin effect with fractional-quasienergy edge states. Our findings thus establish a framework of constructing an intriguing class of topological matter in Floquet open systems.

Dimerization induced mobility edges and multiple reentrant localization transitions in non-Hermitian quasicrystals

Non-Hermitian effects could create rich dynamical and topological phase structures. In this work, we show that the collaboration between lattice dimerization and non-Hermiticity could generally bring about mobility edges and multiple localization transitions in one-dimensional quasicrystals. Non-Hermitian extensions of the Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model with staggered onsite potential and dimerized hopping amplitudes are introduced to demonstrate our results. Reentrant localization transitions due to the interplay between quasiperiodic gain/loss and lattice dimerization are found. Quantized winding numbers are further adopted as topological invariants to characterize transitions among phases with distinct spectrum and transport nature. Our study thus enriches the family of non-Hermitian quasicrystals by incorporating effects of lattice dimerization, and offering a convenient way to modulate localization transitions and mobility edges in non-Hermitian systems.

Driving-induced multiple ${\cal PT}$-symmetry breaking transitions and reentrant localization transitions in non-Hermitian Floquet quasicrystals

The cooperation between time-periodic driving fields and non-Hermitian effects could endow systems with distinctive spectral and transport properties. In this work, we uncover an intriguing class of non-Hermitian Floquet matter in one-dimensional quasicrystals, which is characterized by the emergence of multiple driving-induced ${\cal PT}$-symmetry breaking/restoration, mobility edges, and reentrant localization transitions. These findings are demonstrated by investigating the spectra, level statistics, inverse participation ratios and wavepacket dynamics of a periodically quenched nonreciprocal Harper model. Our results not only unveil the richness of localization phenomena in driven non-Hermitian quasicrystals, but also highlight the advantage of Floquet approach in generating unique types of nonequilibrium phases in open systems.

Floquet band engineering with Bloch oscillations

This work provides a convenient and powerful means towards the engineering of Floquet bands via Bloch oscillations, by adding a tilted linear potential to periodically driven lattice systems. The added linear field not only restricts the spreading of a time-evolving wavepacket but also, depending on the ratio between the Bloch oscillation frequency and the modulation frequency of the periodic driving, dramatically modifies the band profile and topology. Specifically, we consider a driven Aubry-André-Harper model as a working example, in the presence of a linear field. Almost flat Floquet bands or Floquet bands with large Chern numbers due to the interplay between the periodic driving and Bloch oscillations can be obtained, with the band structure and topology extensively tunable by adjusting the ratio of two competing frequencies. To confirm our finding, we further execute the Thouless pumping of one and two interacting bosons in such a lattice system and establish its connection with the topological properties of single- and two-particle Floquet bands.

Topological delocalization transitions and mobility edges in the nonreciprocal Maryland model

Non-Hermitian effects could trigger spectrum, localization and topological phase transitions in quasiperiodic lattices. We propose a non-Hermitian extension of the Maryland model, which forms a paradigm in the study of localization and quantum chaos by introducing asymmetry to its hopping amplitudes. The resulting nonreciprocal Maryland model is found to possess a real-to-complex spectrum transition at a finite amount of hopping asymmetry, through which it changes from a localized phase to a mobility edge phase. Explicit expressions of the complex energy dispersions, phase boundaries and mobility edges are found. A topological winding number is further introduced to characterize the transition between different phases. Our work introduces a unique type of non-Hermitian quasicrystal, which admits exactly obtainable phase diagrams, mobility edges, and holding no extended phases at finite nonreciprocity in the thermodynamic limit.

Dual topological characterization of non-Hermitian Floquet phases

Non-Hermiticity is expected to add far more physical features to the already rich Floquet topological phases of matter. Nevertheless, a systematic approach to characterize non-Hermitian Floquet topological matter is still lacking. In this work we introduce a dual scheme to characterize the topology of non-Hermitian Floquet systems in momentum space and in real space, using a piecewise quenched nonreciprocal Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model for our case studies. Under the periodic boundary condition, topological phases are characterized by a pair of experimentally accessible winding numbers that make jumps between integers and half-integers. Under the open boundary condition, a Floquet version of the so-called open boundary winding number is found to be integers and can predict the number of pairs of zero and $π$ Floquet edge modes coexisting with the non-Hermitian skin effect. Our results indicate that a dual characterization of non-Hermitian Floquet topological matter is necessary and also feasible because the formidable task of constructing the celebrated generalized Brillouin zone for non-Hermitian Floquet systems with multiple hopping length scales can be avoided. This work hence paves a way for further studies of non-Hermitian physics in non-equilibrium systems.

Dynamical characterization of non-Hermitian Floquet topological phases in one-dimension

Non-Hermitian topological phases in static and periodically driven systems have attracted great attention in recent years. Finding dynamical probes for these exotic phases would be of great importance in the detection and application of their topological properties. In this work, we propose a systematic approach to dynamically characterize non-Hermitian Floquet topological phases in one-dimension with chiral symmetry. We show that the topological invariants of a chiral symmetric Floquet system can be fully determined by measuring the winding angles of its time-averaged spin textures. We further purpose a piecewise quenched lattice model with rich non-Hermitian Floquet topological phases, in which our theoretical predictions are numerically demonstrated and compared with another approach utilizing the mean chiral displacement of a wavepacket.

Floquet topological phases with fourfold-degenerate edge modes in a driven spin-1/2 Creutz ladder

Floquet engineering has the advantage of generating new phases with large topological invariants and many edge states by simple driving protocols. In this work, we propose an approach to obtain Floquet edge states with fourfold degeneracy and even-integer topological characterizations in a spinful Creutz ladder model, which is realizable in current experiments. Putting the ladder under periodic quenches, we found rich Floquet topological phases in the system, which belong to the symmetry class CII. Each of these phases is characterized by a pair of even integer topological invariants $(w_{0},w_π) \in 2\mathbb{Z} \times 2 \mathbb{Z}$, which can take arbitrarily large values with the increase of driving parameters. Under the open boundary condition, we further obtain multiple quartets of topological edge states with quasienergies zero and $π$ in the system. Their numbers are determined by the bulk topological invariants $(w_{0},w_π)$ due to the bulk-edge correspondence. Finally, we propose a way to dynamically probe the Floquet topological phases in our system by measuring a generalized mean chiral displacement. Our findings thus enrich the family of Floquet topological matter, and put forward the detection of their topological properties.

Interband coherence induced correction to Thouless pumping: possible observation in cold-atom systems

In Thouless pump, the charge transport in a one-dimensional insulator over an adiabatic cycle is topologically quantized. For nonequilibrium initial states, however, interband coherence will induce a previously unknown contribution to Thouless pumping. Though not geometric in nature, this contribution is independent of the time scale of the pumping protocol. In this work, we perform a detailed analysis of our previous finding [Phys. Rev. B 91, 085420 (2015)] in an already available cold-atom setup. We show that initial states with interband coherence can be obtained via a quench of the system's Hamiltonian. Adiabatic pumping in the post-quench system are then examined both theoretically and numerically, in which the interband coherence is shown to play an important role and can hence be observed experimentally. By choosing adiabatic protocols with different switching-on speeds, we also show that the contribution of interband coherence to adiabatic pumping can be tuned. It is further proposed that the interband coherence induced correction to Thouless pumping may be useful in capturing a topological phase transition point. All our results have direct experimental interests.

Non-Hermitian Floquet phases with even-integer topological invariants in a periodically quenched two-leg ladder

Periodically driven non-Hermitian systems could possess exotic nonequilibrium phases with unique topological, dynamical and transport properties. In this work, we introduce an experimentally realizable two-leg ladder model subjecting to both time-periodic quenches and non-Hermitian effects, which belongs to an extended CII symmetry class. Due to the interplay between drivings and nonreciprocity, rich non-Hermitian Floquet topological phases emerge in the system, with each of them been characterized by a pair of even-integer topological invariants $(w_{0},w_π)\in2\mathbb{Z}\times2\mathbb{Z}$. Under the open boundary condition, these invariants further predict the number of zero- and $π$-quasienergy modes localized around the edges of the system. We finally construct a generalized version of the mean chiral displacement, which could be employed as a dynamical probe to the topological invariants of non-Hermitian Floquet phases in the CII symmetry class. Our work thus introduces a new type of non-Hermitian Floquet topological matter, and further reveals the richness of topology and dynamics in driven open systems.

Non-Hermitian Floquet second order topological insulators in periodically quenched lattices

Higher-order topological phases are characterized by protected states localized at the corners or hinges of the system. By applying time-periodic quenches to a two-dimensional lattice with balanced gain and loss, we obtain a rich variety of non-Hermitian Floquet second order topological insulating phases. Each of the phases is characterized by a pair of integer topological invariants, which predict the numbers of Floquet corner modes at zero and $π$ quasienergies. We establish the topological phase diagram of the model, and find a series of non-Hermiticity induced transitions between different Floquet second order topological phases. We further generalize the mean chiral displacement to two-dimensional non-Hermitian systems, and use it to extract the topological invariants of our model dynamically. This work thus extend the study of higher-order topological matter to more generic nonequilibrium settings, in which the interplay between Floquet engineering and non-Hermiticity yields fascinating new phases.

Non-Hermitian Floquet topological phases in the double-kicked rotor

Dynamical kicking systems possess rich topological structures. In this work, we study Floquet states of matter in a non-Hermitian extension of double kicked rotor model. Under the on-resonance condition, we find various non-Hermitian Floquet topological phases, with each being characterized by a pair of topological winding numbers. A generalized mean chiral displacement is introduced to detect these winding numbers dynamically in two symmetric time frames. Furthermore, by mapping the system to a periodically quenched lattice model, we obtain the topological edge states and unravel the bulk-edge correspondence of the non-Hermitian double kicked rotor. These results uncover the richness of Floquet topological states in non-Hermitian dynamical kicking systems.

Non-Hermitian Floquet topological superconductors with multiple Majorana edge modes

Majorana edge modes are candidate elements of topological quantum computing. In this work, we purpose a Floquet engineering approach to generate arbitrarily many non-Hermitian Majorana zero and $π$ modes at the edges of a one-dimensional topological superconductor. Focusing on a Kitaev chain with periodically kicked superconducting pairings and gain/losses in the chemical potential or nearest neighbor hopping terms, we found rich non-Hermitian Floquet topological superconducting phases, which are originated from the interplay between drivings and non-Hermitian effects. Each of the phases is characterized by a pair of topological winding numbers, which can in principle take arbitrarily large integer values thanks to the applied driving fields. Under open boundary conditions, these winding numbers also predict the number of degenerate Majorana edge modes with quasienergies zero and $π$. Our findings thus expand the family of Floquet topological phases in non-Hermitian settings, with potential applications in realizing environmentally robust Floquet topological quantum computations.

Super-exponential diffusion in nonlinear non-Hermitian systems

We investigate the quantum diffusion of a periodically kicked particle subjecting to both nonlinearity induced self-interactions and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potentials. We find that, due to the interplay between the nonlinearity and non-Hermiticity, the expectation value of mean square of momentum scales with time in a super-exponential form $\langle p^2(t)\rangle\propto\exp[β\exp(αt)]$, which is faster than any known rates of quantum diffusion. In the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking phase, the intensity of a state increases exponentially with time, leading to the exponential growth of the interaction strength. The feedback of the intensity-dependent nonlinearity further turns the interaction energy into the kinetic energy, resulting in a super-exponential growth of the mean energy. These theoretical predictions are in good agreement with numerical simulations in a $\cal{PT}$-symmetric nonlinear kicked particle. Our discovery establishes a new mechanism of diffusion in interacting and dissipative quantum systems. Important implications and possible experimental observations are discussed.

Floquet Semimetal with Floquet-band Holonomy

Exotic topological states of matter such as Floquet topological insulator or Floquet Weyl semimetal can be induced by periodic driving. This work proposes a Floquet semimetal with Floquet-band holonomy. That is, the system is gapless, but as a periodic parameter viewed as quasimomentum of a synthetic dimension completes an adiabatic cycle, each Floquet band as a whole exchanges with other Floquet bands. The dynamical manifestations of such Floquet-band holonomy are studied. Under open boundary conditions, we discover anomalous chiral edge modes localized only at one edge, winding around the entire quasienergy Brillouin zone, well separated from bulk states, and possessing holonomy different from bulk states. These remarkable properties are further exploited to realize quantized or half-quantized edge state pumping.

Floquet Weyl Phases in a Three Dimensional Network Model

We study the topological properties of 3D Floquet bandstructures, which are defined using unitary evolution matrices rather than Hamiltonians. Previously, 2D bandstructures of this sort have been shown to exhibit anomalous topological behaviors, such as topologically-nontrivial zero-Chern-number phases. We show that the bandstructure of a 3D network model can exhibit Weyl phases, which feature "Fermi arc" surface states like those found in Weyl semimetals. Tuning the network's coupling parameters can induce transitions between Weyl phases and various topologically distinct gapped phases. We identify a connection between the topology of the gapped phases and the topology of Weyl point trajectories in k-space. The model is feasible to realize in custom electromagnetic networks, where the Weyl point trajectories can be probed by scattering parameter measurements.

Effects of Dephasing on Quantum Adiabatic Pumping with Nonequilibrium Initial States

Thouless's quantum adiabatic pumping is of fundamental interest to condensed-matter physics. It originally considered a zero-temperature equilibrium state uniformly occupying all the bands below a Fermi surface. In the light of recent direct simulations of Thouless's concept in cold-atom systems, this work investigates the dynamics of quantum adiabatic pumping subject to dephasing, for rather general initial states with nonuniform populations and possibly interband coherence. Using a theory based on pure-dephasing Lindblad evolution, we find that the pumping is contributed by two parts of different nature, a dephasing-modified geometric part weighted by initial Bloch state populations, and an interband-coherence-induced part compromised by dephasing, both of them being independent of the pumping time scale. The overall pumping reflects an interplay of the band topology, initial state populations, initial state coherence, and dephasing. Theoretical results are carefully checked in a Chern insulator model coupled to a pure-dephasing environment, providing a useful starting point to understand and coherently control quantum adiabatic pumping in general situations.

Finite-time Landau-Zener processes and counter-diabatic driving in open systems: beyond Born, Markov and Rotating-wave approximations

We investigate Landau-Zener processes modeled by a two-level quantum system, with its finite bias energy varied in time and in the presence of a single broadened cavity mode at zero temperature. By applying the hierarchy equation method to the Landau-Zener problem, we computationally study the survival fidelity of adiabatic states without Born, Markov, rotating-wave or other perturbative approximations. With this treatment it also becomes possible to investigate cases with very strong system-bath coupling. Different from a previous study of infinite-time Landau-Zener processes, the fidelity of the time-evolving state as compared with instantaneous adiabatic states shows non-monotonic dependence on the system-bath coupling and on the sweep rate of the bias. We then consider the effect of applying a counter-diabatic driving field, which is found to be useful in improving the fidelity only for sufficiently short Landau-Zener processes. Numerically exact results show that different counter-diabatic driving fields can have much different robustness against environment effects. Lastly, using a case study we discuss the possibility of introducing a dynamical decoupling field in order to eliminate the decoherence effect of the environment and at the same time to retain the positive role of a counter-diabatic field. Our work indicates that finite-time Landau-Zener processes with counter-diabatic driving offer a fruitful test bed to understand controlled adiabatic processes in open systems.

Floquet topological semimetal phases of an extended kicked Harper model

Recent discoveries on topological characterization of gapless systems have attracted interest in both theoretical studies and experimental realizations. Examples of such gapless topological phases are Weyl semimetals, which exhibit 3D Dirac cones (Weyl points), and nodal line semimetals, which are characterized by line nodes (two bands touching along a line). Inspired by our previous discoveries that the kicked Harper model exhibits many fascinating features of Floquet topological phases, in this manuscript we consider a generalization of the model, where two additional periodic system parameters are introduced into the Hamiltonian to serve as artificial dimensions, so as to simulate a 3D system. We observe that by increasing the hopping strength and the kicking strength of the system, many new band touching points at Floquet quasienergies $0$ and $π$ will start to appear. Some of them are Weyl points, while the others form line nodes in the parameter space. By taking open boundary conditions along the physical dimension, edge states analogues to Fermi arcs in static Weyl semimetal systems are observed. Finally, by designing an adiabatic pumping scheme, the chirality of the Weyl points and the $π$ Berry phase around line nodes can be manifested.

Interband Coherence Induced Correction to Adiabatic Pumping in Periodically Driven Systems

Periodic driving can create topological phases of matter absent in static systems. In terms of the displacement of the position expectation value of a time-evolving wavepacket in a closed system, a type of adiabatic dynamics in periodically driven systems is studied for general initial states possessing coherence between different Floquet bands. Under one symmetry assumption, the displacement of the wavepacket center over one adiabatic cycle is found to be comprised by two components independent of the time scale of the adiabatic cycle: a weighted integral of the Berry curvature summed over all Floquet bands, plus an interband coherence induced correction. The found correction is beyond a naive application of the quantum adiabatic theorem but survives in the adiabatic limit due to interband coherence. Our theoretical results are hence of general interest towards an improved understanding of the quantum adiabatic theorem. Our theory is checked using a periodically driven superlattice model with nontrivial topological phases. In addition to probing topological phase transitions, the adiabatic dynamics studied in this work is now also anticipated to be useful in manifesting coherence and decoherence effects in the representation of Floquet bands.

Aspects of Floquet Bands and Topological Phase Transitions in a Continuously Driven Superlattice

Recently the creation of novel topological states of matter by a periodic driving field has attracted great attention. To motivate further experimental and theoretical studies, we investigate interesting aspects of Floquet bands and topological phase transitions in a continuously driven Harper model. In such a continuously driven system with an odd number of Floquet bands, the bands are found to have nonzero Chern numbers in general and topological phase transitions take place as we tune various system parameters, such as the amplitude or the period of the driving field. The nontrivial Floquet band topology results in a quantized transport of Wannier states in the lattice space. For certain parameter choices, very flat yet topologically nontrivial Floquet bands may also emerge, a feature that is potentially useful for the simulation of physics of strongly correlated systems. Some cases with an even number of Floquet bands may also have intriguing Dirac cones in the spectrum. Under open boundary conditions, anomalous counter-propagating chiral edge modes and degenerate zero modes are also found as the system parameters are tuned. These results should be of experimental interest because a continuously driven system is easier to realize than a periodically kicked system.
