Doping-dependent metal-insulator transition in a disordered Hubbard model

We study the effect of disorder and doping on the metal-insulator transition in a repulsive Hubbard model on a square lattice using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. First, with the aim of making our results reliable, we compute the sign problem with various parameters such as temperature, disorder, on-site interactions, and lattice size. We show that in the presence of randomness in the hopping elements, the metal-insulator transition occurs and the critical disorder strength differs at different fillings. We also demonstrate that doping is a driving force behind the metal-insulator transition.

Least-Squares Method for Inverse Medium Problems

We present a two-stage least-squares method to inverse medium problems of reconstructing multiple unknown coefficients simultaneously from noisy data. A direct sampling method is applied to detect the location of the inhomogeneity in the first stage, while a total least-squares method with mixed regularization is used to recover the medium profile in the second stage. The total least-squares method is designed to minimize the residual of the model equation and the data fitting, along with an appropriate regularization, in an attempt to significantly improve the accuracy of the approximation obtained from the first stage. We shall also present an analysis on the well-posedness and convergence of this algorithm. Numerical experiments are carried out to verify the accuracies and robustness of this novel two-stage least-squares algorithm, with great tolerance of noise.

Intermediate Phase in Interacting Dirac Fermions with Staggered Potential

By performing exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations of a model of interacting Dirac Fermions with staggered potential, we reveal a novel intermediate phase where the electronic correlations drive a band insulator metallic, and at a larger interaction, drive the metal to Mott insulator. We also show that the Mott insulating phase is antiferromagnetic. A complete phase diagram is achieved by studying the phase transitions at large staggered potential and interaction strengths, which shows that the intermediate state is robust and occupies a large part of the phase diagram and that it should be more feasible to be detected experimentally.

Synchronized Fractionation and Phase Separation in Binary Colloids

Fractionation is necessary for self-assembly in multicomponent mixtures. Here, reversible fractionation and crystallization are realized and studied in a two-dimensional binary colloids which is supersaturated by enhancing the attraction between colloidal particles. As a deep and fast supersaturation results in gels with a uniform distribution of binary particles, a gradual quasistatic supersaturating process leads to a two-step crystallization in which small particles and large particles are fractionated as coexisting crystal and liquid phases respectively. Fractionation occurs as well in the quasistatic melting of gel. We show that the synchronized fractionation and phase separation arises from the competition between the size-dependent repulsion and the tunable attraction. The results in this study demonstrate a robust mechanism of fractionation via phase separation, and have important implication in understanding the reversible formation of membraneless organelles in living cells.

Character of frustration on magnetic correlation in doped Hubbard model

The magnetic correlation in the Hubbard model on a two-dimensional anisotropic triangular lattice is studied by using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. Around half filling, it is found that the increasing frustration $t'/t$ could change the wave vector of maximum spin correlation along ($π,π$)$\rightarrow$($π,\frac{5π}{6}$)$\rightarrow$($\frac{5π}{6},\frac{5π}{6}$)$\rightarrow$ ($\frac{2π}{3},\frac{2π}{3}$), indicating the frustration's remarkable effect on the magnetism. In the studied filling region <n>=1.0-1.3, the doping behaves like some kinds of {\it{frustration}}, which destroys the $(π,π)$ AFM correlation quickly and push the magnetic order to a wide range of the $(\frac{2π}{3},\frac{2π}{3})$ $120^{\circ}$ order when the $t'/t$ is large enough. Our non-perturbative calculations reveal a rich magnetic phase diagram over both the frustration and electron doping.

Electronic transport of bilayer graphene with asymmetry line defects

In this paper, we study the quantum properties of a bilayer graphene with (asymmetry) line defects. The localized states are found around the line defects. Thus, the line defects on one certain layer of the bilayer graphene can lead to an electric transport channel. By adding a bias potential along the direction of the line defects, we calculate the electric conductivity of bilayer graphene with line defects using Landauer-Büttiker theory, and show that the channel affects the electric conductivity remarkably by comparing the results with those in a perfect bilayer graphene. This one-dimensional line electric channel has the potential to be applied in the nanotechnology engineering.

Topological Hierarchy Insulators and Topological Fractal Insulators

Topological insulators are new states of quantum matter with metallic edge/surface states. In this paper, we pointed out that there exists a new type of particle-hole symmetry-protected topological insulator - topological hierarchy insulator (THI), a composite topological state of a (parent) topological insulator and its defect-induced topological mid-gap states. A particular type of THI is topological fractal insulator, that is a THI with self-similar topological structure. In the end, we discuss the possible experimental realizations of THIs.

DualTable: A Hybrid Storage Model for Update Optimization in Hive

Hive is the most mature and prevalent data warehouse tool providing SQL-like interface in the Hadoop ecosystem. It is successfully used in many Internet companies and shows its value for big data processing in traditional industries. However, enterprise big data processing systems as in Smart Grid applications usually require complicated business logics and involve many data manipulation operations like updates and deletes. Hive cannot offer sufficient support for these while preserving high query performance. Hive using the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) for storage cannot implement data manipulation efficiently and Hive on HBase suffers from poor query performance even though it can support faster data manipulation. There is a project based on Hive issue Hive-5317 to support update operations, but it has not been finished in Hive's latest version. Since this ACID compliant extension adopts same data storage format on HDFS, the update performance problem is not solved. In this paper, we propose a hybrid storage model called DualTable, which combines the efficient streaming reads of HDFS and the random write capability of HBase. Hive on DualTable provides better data manipulation support and preserves query performance at the same time. Experiments on a TPC-H data set and on a real smart grid data set show that Hive on DualTable is up to 10 times faster than Hive when executing update and delete operations.

Magnetic Orders of Correlated Topological Insulators at Finite Temperature

In this paper, we study the magnetic orders of two dimensional correlated topological insulators including the correlated Chern insulator and the correlated Z2 topological insulator at finite temperature. For the 2D correlated Chern insulator, we found that thermal-fluctuation-induced magnetic order appears in the intermediate interaction region of the correlated Chern insulator. On the contrary, for the correlated Z2 topological insulator there doesn't exist the thermal-fluctuation-induced magnetic order. In the end, we give an explanation on the difference.

Numerical study of magnetic and pairing correlation in bilayer triangular lattice

By using the determinant Quantum Monte Carlo method, the magnetic and pairing correlation of the Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot$yH$_{2}$O system are studied within the Hubbard model on a bilayer triangular lattice. The temperature dependence of spin correlation function and pairing susceptibility with several kinds of symmetries at different electron fillings and inter layer coupling terms are investigated. It is found that the system shows an antiferromagnetic correlation around the half filling, and the $fn$-wave pairing correlation dominates over other kinds of pairing symmetry in the low doping region. As the electron filling decreases away from the half filling, both the ferromagnetic correlation and the $f$-wave paring susceptibility are enhanced and tend to dominate. It is also shown that both the magnetic susceptibility and paring susceptibility decrease as the inter layer coupling increases.

Topological Superconductors in Correlated Chern Insulators

In this paper, we realize a topological superconductor (TSC) in correlated topological insulator - the interacting spinful Haldane model. We consider the electrons on the Haldane model with on-site negative-U interaction and then study its properties by mean field theory and random-phase-approximation (RPA) approach. We found that in the intermediate interaction region, the ground state becomes a TSC with the Chern number 2. We also study its edge states and the zero modes of the pi-flux.

Composite Spin Liquid in Correlated Topological Insulator - Spin Liquid without Spin-Charge Separation

In this paper, we found a new type of insulator - composite spin liquid which can be regarded as a short range B-type topological spin-density-wave. Composite spin liquid is topological ordered state beyond the classification of traditional spin liquid states. The elementary excitations are the "composite electrons" with both spin degree of freedom and charge degree of freedom, together with topological spin texture. This topological state supports chiral edge mode but no topological degeneracy.

Dynamical spin response of electron doped Mott insulators on a triangular lattice

The spin dynamics of electron doped Mott insulators on a triangular lattice is studied based on the $t-J$ model. It is found that the particularly universal behaviors of integrated dynamical spin structure factor seen in the doped Mott insulators on a square lattice, are absent in the doped Mott insulators on a triangular lattice, indicating the presence of the normal state gap. As a result, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_{1}$ divided by $T$ reduces with decreasing temperatures in the temperature region above 0.2$J$$\approx$50K, then follows a Curie-Weiss-like behavior at the temperature less than 50K, in qualitative agreement with experimental observations.

Particle-Hole Symmetry Protected Zero Modes on Vacancies in the Topological Insulators and Topological Superconductors on the Honeycomb Lattice

In this paper we study the quantum properties of the lattice vacancy in topological band insulators (TBIs) and topological superconductors (TSCs) on honeycomb lattice with particle-hole symmetry. Each vacancy has one zero mode for the Haldane model and two zero modes for the Kane-Mele model. In addition, in TSCs on honeycomb lattice with particle-hole symmetry, we found the existence of the Majorana zero modes around the vacancies. These zero energy modes are protected by particle-hole symmetry of these topological sates.

Superconductivity and magnetic fluctuations in electron-doped cobaltate superconductors

We study the interplay between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in electron-doped cobaltate Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O based on the kinetic energy driven superconductivity mechanism. We show that the superconducting state is governed by both charge carrier pairing and quasiparticle coherent, and displays a common dome-shaped phase diagram in agreement with experimental results. By calculating the dynamical spin structure factor, we theoretically find that the magnetic excitation shows a commensurate resonance peak, which locates at antiferromagnetic wave vector $Q (\frac{2π}{3},\frac{2π}{\sqrt{3}})$ for a broad range of low energies, then evolves outward into six incommensurate magnetic scattering peaks with increasing energy. Such commensurate-incommensurate spin resonance excitation should be measured by the inelastic neutron scattering technique (INS). Our present results strongly suggest that magnetic resonance can indeed be one of the fundamental features in doped Mott insulators.

Topological Spin Density Wave

In this paper, we investigate the topological Hubbard model on honeycomb lattice. By considering the topological properties of the magnetic state, new types of quantum states - A-type and B-type topological spin-density-waves (A-TSDW and B-TSDW) are explored. The low energy physics is solely determined by its Chern-Simons-Hopf gauge field theories with different K-matrices. In the formulism of topological field theory, we found spin-charge separated charge-flux binding effect for A-TSDW and spin-charge synchronized charge-flux binding effect for B-TSDW. In addition, we studied the edge states and quantized Hall effect in different TSDWs.

Chiral Spin Liquid in Correlated Topological Insulator

In this paper, we investigate the topological Hubbard model - the spinful Haldane model with on-site interaction on honeycomb lattice with spin rotation symmetry by using slave-rotor approach and find that chiral spin liquid exists in such a correlated electron system of the intermediate coupling region. By considering the anyon nature of excitations, chiral spin liquid may be the ground state of the topological Hubbard model. The low energy physics is basically determined by its Chern-Simons gauge theory.

Heat transport of electron-doped Cobaltates

Within the t-J model, the heat transport of electron-doped cobaltates is studied based on the fermion-spin theory. It is shown that the temperature dependent thermal conductivity is characterized by the low temperature peak located at a finite temperature. The thermal conductivity increases monotonously with increasing temperature at low temperatures T $<$ 0.1$J$, and then decreases with increasing temperature for higher temperatures T $>$ 0.1$J$, in qualitative agreement with experimental result observed from Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ .

Kinetic energy driven superconductivity in the electron doped cobaltate Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O

Within the charge-spin separation fermion-spin theory, we have shown that the mechanism of superconductivity in the electron doped cobaltate Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O is ascribed to its kinetic energy. The dressed fermions interact occurring directly through the kinetic energy by exchanging magnetic excitations. This interaction leads to a net attractive force between dressed fermions, then the electron Cooper pairs originating from the dressed fermion pairing state are due to the charge-spin recombination, and their condensation reveals the superconducting ground state. The superconducting transition temperature is identical to the dressed fermion pair transition temperature, and is suppressed to a lower temperature due to the strong magnetic frustration. The optimal superconducting transition temperature occurs in the electron doping concentration $δ\approx 0.29$, and then decreases for both underdoped and overdoped regimes, in qualitative agreement with the experimental results.
