Exceptional surgeries on hyperbolic fibered knots

Let $K\subset S^3$ be a hyperbolic fibered knot such that $S^3_{p/q}(K)$, the $\frac pq$--surgery on $K$, is non-hyperbolic. We prove that if the monodromy of $K$ is right-veering, then $0\le\frac pq\le 4g(K)$. The upper bound $4g(K)$ cannot be attained if $S^3_{p/q}(K)$ is a small Seifert fibered L-space. If the monodromy of $K$ is neither right-veering nor left-veering, then $|q|\le3$. As a corollary, for any given positive torus knot $T$, if $p/q\ge4g(T)+4$, then $p/q$ is a characterizing slope. This improves earlier bounds of Ni--Zhang and McCoy. We also prove that some finite/cyclic slopes are characterizing. More precisely, $14$ is characterizing for $T_{4,3}$, $17$ is characterizing for $T_{5,3}$, and $4n+1$ is characterizing for $T_{2n+1,2}$ except when $n=5$. By a recent theorem of Tange, this shows that $T_{2n+1,2}$ is the only knot in $S^3$ admitting a lens space surgery while the Alexander polynomial has the form $t^n-t^{n-1}+t^{n-2}+\text{lower order terms}$. In the appendix, we prove that if the rank of the second term of the knot Floer homology of a fibered knot is $1$, then the monodromy is either right-veering or left-veering.

Extending periodic automorphisms of surfaces to 3-manifolds

Let $G$ be a finite group acting on a connected compact surface $Σ$, and $M$ be an integer homology 3-sphere. We show that if each element of $G$ is extendable over $M$ with respect to a fixed embedding $Σ\rightarrow M$, then $G$ is extendable over some $M'$ which is 1-dominated by $M$. From this result, in the orientable category we classify all periodic automorphisms of closed surfaces that are extendable over the 3-sphere. The corresponding embedded surface of such an automorphism can always be a Heegaard surface.

The prism manifold realization problem

The spherical manifold realization problem asks which spherical three-manifolds arise from surgeries on knots in $S^3$. In recent years, the realization problem for C, T, O, and I-type spherical manifolds has been solved, leaving the D-type manifolds (also known as the prism manifolds) as the only remaining case. Every prism manifold can be parametrized as $P(p,q)$, for a pair of relatively prime integers $p>1$ and $q$. We determine a complete list of prism manifolds $P(p, q)$ that can be realized by positive integral surgeries on knots in $S^3$ when $q<0$. The methodology undertaken to obtain the classification is similar to that of Greene for lens spaces.

Correction terms, $\mathbb Z_2$--Thurston norm, and triangulations

We show that the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology give a lower bound to the the genus of one-sided Heegaard splittings and the $\mathbb Z_2$--Thurston norm. Using a result of Jaco--Rubinstein--Tillmann, this gives a lower bound to the complexity of certain closed $3$--manifolds. As an application, we compute the $\mathbb Z_2$--Thurston norm of the double branched cover of some closed 3--braids, and give upper and lower bounds for the complexity of these manifolds.

Dehn surgery on knots in $S^3$ producing Nil Seifert fibred spaces

We prove that there are exactly $6$ Nil Seifert fibred spaces which can be obtained by Dehn surgeries on non-trefoil knots in $S^3$, with $\{60, 144, 156, 288, 300\}$ as the exact set of all such surgery slopes up to taking the mirror images of the knots. We conjecture that there are exactly $4$ specific hyperbolic knots in $S^3$ which admit Nil Seifert fibred surgery. We also give some more general results and a more general conjecture concerning Seifert fibred surgeries on hyperbolic knots in $S^3$.

Heegaard Floer correction terms and rational genus bounds

Given an element in the first homology of a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$, one can consider the minimal rational genus of all knots in this homology class. This defines a function $Θ$ on $H_1(Y;\mathbb Z)$, which was introduced by Turaev as an analogue of Thurston norm. We will give a lower bound for this function using the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology. As a corollary, we show that Floer simple knots in L-spaces are genus minimizers in their homology classes, hence answer questions of Turaev and Rasmussen about genus minimizers in lens spaces.

Half-integral finite surgeries on knots in $S^3$

Suppose that a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ admits a finite surgery, Boyer and Zhang proved that the surgery slope must be either integral or half-integral, and they conjectured that the latter case does not happen. Using the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology, we prove that if a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ admits a half-integral finite surgery, then the knot must have the same knot Floer homology as one of eight non-hyperbolic knots which are known to admit such surgeries, and the resulting manifold must be one of ten spherical space forms. As knot Floer homology carries a lot of information about the knot, this gives a strong evidence to Boyer--Zhang's conjecture.

Some applications of Gabai's internal hierarchy

Any Haken 3--manifold (possibly with boundary consisting of tori) can be transformed into a $\mathrm{surface}\times S^1$ by a series of splitting and regluing along incompressible surfaces. This fact was proved by Gabai as an application of his sutured manifold theory. The first half of this paper provides a few technical details in the proof. In the second half of this paper, some applications of Gabai's theorem to Heegaard Floer homology are given. We refine the known results about the Thurson norm and fibrations. We also give some classification results for Floer simple knots in manifolds with positive $b_1$.

Characterizing slopes for torus knots

A slope $\frac pq$ is called a characterizing slope for a given knot $K_0$ in $S^3$ if whenever the $\frac pq$-surgery on a knot $K$ in $S^3$ is homeomorphic to the $\frac pq$-surgery on $K_0$ via an orientation preserving homeomorphism, then $K=K_0$. In this paper we try to find characterizing slopes for torus knots $T_{r,s}$. We show that any slope $\frac pq$ which is larger than the number $\frac{30(r^2-1)(s^2-1)}{67}$ is a characterizing slope for $T_{r,s}$. The proof uses Heegaard Floer homology and Agol--Lackenby's 6--Theorem. In the case of $T_{5,2}$, we obtain more specific information about its set of characterizing slopes by applying more Heegaard Floer homology techniques.

Virtual Betti numbers and virtual symplecticity of 4-dimensional mapping tori

In this note, we compute the virtual first Betti numbers of 4-manifolds fibering over $S^1$ with prime fiber. As an application, we show that if such a manifold is symplectic with nonpositive Kodaira dimension, then the fiber itself is a sphere or torus bundle over $S^1$. In a different direction, we prove that if the 3-dimensional fiber of such a 4-manifold is virtually fibered then the 4-manifold is virtually symplectic unless its virtual first Betti number is 1.

Homological actions on sutured Floer homology

We define the action of the homology group $H_1(M,\partial M)$ on the sutured Floer homology $SFH(M,γ)$. It turns out that the contact invariant $EH(M,γ,ξ)$ is usually sent to zero by this action. This fact allows us to refine an earlier result proved by Ghiggini and the author. As a corollary, we classify knots in $#^n(S^1\times S^2)$ which have simple knot Floer homology groups: They are essentially the Borromean knots.

Manifolds with small Heegaard Floer ranks

We show that the only irreducible three-manifold with positive first Betti number and Heegaard Floer homology of rank two is homeomorphic to zero-framed surgery on the trefoil. We classify links whose branched double cover gives rise to this manifold. Together with a spectral sequence from Khovanov homology to the Floer homology of the branched double cover, our results show that Khovanov homology detects the unknot if and only if it detects the two component unlink.
