Murasugi sum and extremal knot Floer homology

The aim of this paper is to study the behavior of knot Floer homology under Murasugi sum. We establish a graded version of Ni's isomorphism between the extremal knot Floer homology of Murasugi sum of two links and the tensor product of the extremal knot Floer homology groups of the two summands. We further prove that $τ=g$ for each summand if and only if $τ=g$ holds for the Murasugi sum (with $τ$ and $g$ defined appropriately for multi-component links). Some applications are presented.

A surgery formula for knot Floer homology

Let $K$ be a rationally null-homologous knot in a $3$-manifold $Y$, equipped with a nonzero framing $λ$, and let $Y_λ(K)$ denote the result of $λ$-framed surgery on $Y$. Ozsváth and Szabó gave a formula for the Heegaard Floer homology groups of $Y_λ(K)$ in terms of the knot Floer complex of $(Y,K)$. We strengthen this formula by adding a second filtration that computes the knot Floer complex of the dual knot $K_λ$ in $Y_λ$, i.e., the core circle of the surgery solid torus. In the course of proving our refinement we derive a combinatorial formula for the Alexander grading which may be of independent interest.

Satellites of Infinite Rank in the Smooth Concordance Group

We conjecture that satellite operations are either constant or have infinite rank in the concordance group. We reduce this to the difficult case of winding number zero satellites, and use $SO(3)$ gauge theory to provide a general criterion sufficient for the image of a satellite operation to generate an infinite rank subgroup of the smooth concordance group $\mathcal{C}$. Our criterion applies widely; notably to many unknotted patterns for which the corresponding operators on the topological concordance group are zero. We raise some questions and conjectures regarding satellite operators and their interaction with concordance.

The Fukaya category of the pillowcase, traceless character varieties, and Khovanov Cohomology

For a diagram of a 2-stranded tangle in the 3-ball we define a twisted complex of compact Lagrangians in the triangulated envelope of the Fukaya category of the smooth locus of the pillowcase. We show that this twisted complex is a functorial invariant of the isotopy class of the tangle, and that it provides a factorization of Bar-Natan's functor from the tangle cobordism category to chain complexes. In particular, the hom set of our invariant with a particular non-compact Lagrangian associated to the trivial tangle is naturally isomorphic to the reduced Khovanov chain complex of the closure of the tangle. Our construction comes from the geometry of traceless SU(2) character varieties associated to resolutions of the tangle diagram, and was inspired by Kronheimer and Mrowka's singular instanton link homology.

Floer Homology and Fractional Dehn Twists

We establish a relationship between Heegaard Floer homology and the fractional Dehn twist coefficient of surface automorphisms. Specifically, we show that the rank of the Heegaard Floer homology of a 3-manifold bounds the absolute value of the fractional Dehn twist coefficient of the monodromy of any of its open book decompositions with connected binding. We prove this by showing that the rank of Floer homology gives bounds for the number of boundary parallel right or left Dehn twists necessary to add to a surface automorphism to guarantee that the associated contact manifold is tight or overtwisted, respectively. By examining branched double covers, we also show that the rank of the Khovanov homology of a link bounds the fractional Dehn twist coefficient of its odd-stranded braid representatives.

The Upsilon function of L-space knots is a Legendre transform

Given an L-space knot we show that its Upsilon function is the Legendre transform of a counting function equivalent to the d-invariants of its large surgeries. The unknotting obstruction obtained for the Upsilon function is, in the case of L-space knots, contained in the d-invariants of large surgeries. Generalizations apply for connected sums of L-space knots, which imply that the slice obstruction provided by Upsilon on the subgroup of concordance generated by L-space knots is no finer than that provided by the d-invariants.

The pillowcase and traceless representations of knot groups II: a Lagrangian-Floer theory in the pillowcase

We define an elementary relatively $\mathbb Z/4$ graded Lagrangian-Floer chain complex for restricted immersions of compact 1-manifolds into the pillowcase, and apply it to the intersection diagram obtained by taking traceless $SU(2)$ character varieties of 2-tangle decompositions of knots. Calculations for torus knots are explained in terms of pictures in the punctured plane. The relation to the reduced instanton homology of knots is explored.

Topologically slice knots of smooth concordance order two

The existence of topologically slice knots that are of infinite order in the knot concordance group followed from Freedman's work on topological surgery and Donaldson's gauge theoretic approach to 4-manifolds. Here, as an application of Ozsvath and Szabo's Heegaard-Floer theory, we show the existence of an infinite subgroup of the smooth concordance group generated by topologically slice knots of concordance order two. In addition, no nontrivial element in this subgroup can be represented by a knot with Alexander polynomial one.

The pillowcase and perturbations of traceless representations of knot groups

We introduce explicit holonomy perturbations of the Chern-Simons functional on a 3-ball containing a pair of unknotted arcs. These perturbations give us a concrete local method for making the moduli spaces of flat singular SO(3) connections relevant to Kronheimer and Mrowka's singular instanton knot homology non-degenerate. The mechanism for this study is a (Lagrangian) intersection diagram which arises, through restriction of representations, from a tangle decomposition of a knot. When one of the tangles is trivial, our perturbations allow us to study isolated intersections of two Lagrangians to produce minimal generating sets for singular instanton knot homology. The (symplectic) manifold where this intersection occurs corresponds to the traceless character variety of the four-punctured 2-sphere, which we identify with the familiar pillowcase. We investigate the image in this pillowcase of the traceless representations of tangles obtained by removing a trivial tangle from 2-bridge knots and torus knots. Using this, we compute the singular instanton homology of a variety of torus knots. In many cases, our computations allow us to understand non-trivial differentials in the spectral sequence from Khovanov homology to singular instanton homology.

Dehn surgery, rational open books and knot Floer homology

By recent results of Baker--Etnyre--Van Horn-Morris, a rational open book decomposition defines a compatible contact structure. We show that the Heegaard Floer contact invariant of such a contact structure can be computed in terms of the knot Floer homology of its (rationally null-homologous) binding. We then use this description of contact invariants, together with a formula for the knot Floer homology of the core of a surgery solid torus, to show that certain manifolds obtained by surgeries on bindings of open books carry tight contact structures. Possible applications to lens space surgeries are discussed.

Knot concordance and homology cobordism

We consider the question: "If the zero-framed surgeries on two oriented knots in the 3-sphere are integral homology cobordant, preserving the homology class of the positive meridians, are the knots themselves concordant?" We show that this question has a negative answer in the smooth category, even for topologically slice knots. To show this we first prove that the zero-framed surgery on K is Z-homology cobordant to the zero-framed surgery on many of its winding number one satellites P(K). Then we prove that in many cases the tau and s-invariants of K and P(K) differ. Consequently neither tau nor s is an invariant of the smooth homology cobordism class of the zero-framed surgery. We also show, that a natural rational version of this question has a negative answer in both the topological and smooth categories, by proving similar results for K and its (p,1)-cables.

Topologically slice knots with nontrivial Alexander polynomial

Let C_T be the subgroup of the smooth knot concordance group generated by topologically slice knots and let C_D be the subgroup generated by knots with trivial Alexander polynomial. We prove the quotient C_T/C_D is infinitely generated, and uncover similar structure in the 3-dimensional rational spin bordism group. Our methods also lead to the construction of links that are topologically, but not smoothly, concordant to boundary links.

Manifolds with small Heegaard Floer ranks

We show that the only irreducible three-manifold with positive first Betti number and Heegaard Floer homology of rank two is homeomorphic to zero-framed surgery on the trefoil. We classify links whose branched double cover gives rise to this manifold. Together with a spectral sequence from Khovanov homology to the Floer homology of the branched double cover, our results show that Khovanov homology detects the unknot if and only if it detects the two component unlink.

On sutured Floer homology and the equivalence of Seifert surfaces

We study the sutured Floer homology invariants of the sutured manifold obtained by cutting a knot complement along a Seifert surface, R. We show that these invariants are finer than the "top term" of the knot Floer homology, which they contain. In particular, we use sutured Floer homology to distinguish two non-isotopic minimal genus Seifert surfaces for the knot 8_3. A key ingredient for this technique is finding appropriate Heegaard diagrams for the sutured manifold associated to the complement of a Seifert surface.

Knot Floer homology of Whitehead doubles

In this paper we study the knot Floer homology invariants of the twisted and untwisted Whitehead doubles of an arbitrary knot K. We present a formula for the filtered chain homotopy type of HFK(D(+,K,t)) in terms of the invariants for K, where D(+,K,t) denotes the t-twisted positive-clasped Whitehead double of K. In particular, the formula can be used iteratively and can be used to compute the Floer homology of manifolds obtained by surgery on Whitehead doubles. An immediate corollary is that tau(D(+,K,t))=1 if t< 2tau(K) and zero otherwise, where tau is the Ozsv{á}th-Szab{ó} concordance invariant. It follows that the iterated untwisted Whitehead doubles of a knot satisfying tau(K)>0 are not smoothly slice.

On knot Floer homology and cabling

This paper is devoted to the study of the knot Floer homology groups HFK(S^3,K_{2,n}), where K_{2,n} denotes the (2,n) cable of an arbitrary knot, K. It is shown that for sufficiently large |n|, the Floer homology of the cabled knot depends only on the filtered chain homotopy type of CFK(K). A precise formula for this relationship is presented. In fact, the homology groups in the top 2 filtration dimensions for the cabled knot are isomorphic to the original knot's Floer homology group in the top filtration dimension. The results are extended to (p,pn+-1) cables. As an example we compute HFK((T_{2,2m+1})_{2,2n+1}) for all sufficiently large |n|, where T_{2,2m+1} denotes the (2,2m+1)-torus knot.
