Some algebraic and arithmetic properties of Feynman diagrams

This article reports on some recent progresses in Bessel moments, which represent a class of Feynman diagrams in 2-dimensional quantum field theory. Many challenging mathematical problems on these Bessel moments have been formulated as a vast set of conjectures, by David Broadhurst and collaborators, who work at the intersection of high energy physics, number theory and algebraic geometry. We present the main ideas behind our verifications of several such conjectures, which revolve around linear and non-linear sum rules of Bessel moments, as well as relations between individual Feynman diagrams and critical values of modular $L$-functions.

$\mathbb Q$-linear dependence of certain Bessel moments

Let $I_0$ and $K_0$ be modified Bessel functions of the zeroth order. We use Vanhove's differential operators for Feynman integrals to derive upper bounds for dimensions of the $\mathbb Q$-vector space spanned by certain sequences of Bessel moments \[ \left\{\left.\int_0^\infty [I_0(t)]^a[K_0(t)]^b t^{2k+1}\mathrm{d}\, t\right|k\in\mathbb Z_{\geq0}\right\},\]where $a$ and $b$ are fixed non-negative integers. For $ a\in\mathbb Z\cap[1,b)$, our upper bound for the $ \mathbb Q$-linear dimension is $\lfloor (a+b-1)/2\rfloor$, which improves the Borwein-Salvy bound $\lfloor (a+b+1)/2\rfloor$. Our new upper bound $\lfloor (a+b-1)/2\rfloor$ is not sharp for $ a=2,b=6$, due to an exceptional $ \mathbb Q$-linear relation $\int_0^\infty [I_0(t)]^2[K_0(t)]^6 t\mathrm{d}\, t=72\int_0^\infty [I_0(t)]^2[K_0(t)]^6 t^{3}\mathrm{d}\, t$, which is provable by integrating modular forms.

Quantitative spectral analysis of electromagnetic scattering. II: Evolution semigroups and non-perturbative solutions

We carry out quantitative studies on the Green operator $ \hat{\mathscr G}$ associated with the Born equation, an integral equation that models electromagnetic scattering, building the strong stability of the evolution semigroup $\{\exp(-iτ\hat{\mathscr G})|τ\geq0\} $ on polynomial compactness and the Arendt-Batty-Lyubich-Vũ theorem. The strongly-stable evolution semigroup inspires our proposal of a non-perturbative method to solve the light scattering problem and improve the Born approximation.

Spectral structure of electromagnetic scattering on arbitrarily shaped dielectrics

Spectral analysis is performed on the Born equation, a strongly singular integral equation modeling the interactions between electromagnetic waves and arbitrarily shaped dielectric scatterers. Compact and Hilbert--Schmidt operator polynomials are constructed from the Green operator of electromagnetic scattering on scatterers with smooth boundaries. As a consequence, it is shown that the strongly singular Born equation has a discrete spectrum, and that the spectral series $ \sum_λ|λ|^2|1+2λ|^4$ is convergent, counting multiplicities of the eigenvalues $ λ$. This reveals a shape-independent optical resonance mode corresponding to a critical dielectric permittivity $ ε_r=-1$.

A mathematical model for universal semantics

We characterize the meaning of words with language-independent numerical fingerprints, through a mathematical analysis of recurring patterns in texts. Approximating texts by Markov processes on a long-range time scale, we are able to extract topics, discover synonyms, and sketch semantic fields from a particular document of moderate length, without consulting external knowledge-base or thesaurus. Our Markov semantic model allows us to represent each topical concept by a low-dimensional vector, interpretable as algebraic invariants in succinct statistical operations on the document, targeting local environments of individual words. These language-independent semantic representations enable a robot reader to both understand short texts in a given language (automated question-answering) and match medium-length texts across different languages (automated word translation). Our semantic fingerprints quantify local meaning of words in 14 representative languages across 5 major language families, suggesting a universal and cost-effective mechanism by which human languages are processed at the semantic level. Symmetries of certain double integrals related to Hall effect devices

One encounters iterated elliptic integrals in the study of Hall effect devices, as a result of conformal mappings of Schwarz--Christoffel type. Some of these double elliptic integrals possess amazing symmetries with regard to the physical parameters of the underlying Hall effect devices. We give a unified mathematical treatment of such symmetric double integrals, in the context of Hall effect devices with three and four contacts.

Ramanujan Series for Epstein Zeta Functions

In the spirit of Ramanujan, we derive exponentially fast convergent series for Epstein zeta functions $ E^{\varGamma_0(N)}(z,s)$ on the Hecke congruence groups $ \varGamma_0(N),N\in\mathbb Z_{>0}$, where $z$ is an arbitrary point in the upper half-plane $ \mathfrak H$, and $s\in\mathbb Z_{>1}$. These Ramanujan series can be reformulated as integrations of modular forms, in the framework of Eichler integrals. Particular cases of these Eichler integrals recover part of the recent results reported by Wan and Zucker (arXiv:1410.7081v1).

Kontsevich-Zagier Integrals for Automorphic Green's Functions. I

In the framework of Kontsevich-Zagier periods, we derive integral representations for weight-$k$ automorphic Green's functions invariant under modular transformations in $\varGamma_0(N)$ ($N\in\mathbb Z_{\geq1} $), provided that there are no cusp forms on the respective Hecke congruence groups with an even integer weight $k\geq4$. These Kontsevich-Zagier integral representations for automorphic Green's functions give explicit formulae for certain Eichler-Shimura maps connecting Eichler cohomology to Maaß cusp forms. We construct integral representations for weight-4 Gross-Zagier renormalized Green's functions (automorphic self-energy) from limit scenarios of the respective Kontsevich-Zagier integrals. We reduce the weight-4 automorphic self-energy on $ X_0(4)(\mathbb C)=\varGamma_0(4)\setminus\mathfrak H^*$ to an explicit form, which supports an algebraicity conjecture of Gross and Zagier.

Legendre Functions, Spherical Rotations, and Multiple Elliptic Integrals

A closed-form formula is derived for the generalized Clebsch-Gordan integral $ \int_{-1}^1 {[}P_ν(x){]}^2P_ν(-x)\D x$, with $ P_ν$ being the Legendre function of arbitrary complex degree $ ν\in\mathbb C$. The finite Hilbert transform of $ P_ν(x)P_ν(-x),-1<x<1$ is evaluated. An analytic proof is provided for a recently conjectured identity $\int_0^1[\mathbf K(\sqrt{1-k^2})]^{3}\D k=6\int_0^1[\mathbf K(k)]^2\mathbf K(\sqrt{1-k^2})k\D k=[Γ(1/4)]^{8}/(128π^2) $ involving complete elliptic integrals of the first kind $ \mathbf K(k)$ and Euler's gamma function $ Γ(z)$.

On Some Integrals Over the Product of Three Legendre Functions

The definite integrals $ \int_{-1}^1(1-x^2)^{(ν-1)/2}[P_ν(x)]^3\D x$, $ \int_{-1}^1(1-x^2)^{(ν-1)/2}[P_ν(x)]^2P_ν(-x)\D x$, $\int_{-1}^1x(1-x^2)^{(ν-1)/2}[P_{ν+1}(x)]^3\D x $ and $\int_{-1}^1x(1-x^2)^{(ν-1)/2}[P_{ν+1}(x)]^2P_{ν+1}(-x)\D x $ are evaluated in closed form, where $P_ν$ is the Legendre function of degree $ν$, and $ \Rν>-1$. Special cases of these formulae are related to certain integrals over elliptic integrals that have arithmetic interest.
