Measurement of the B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓB^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} branching ratio and ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| with a fully reconstructed accompanying BB meson in 2019-2021 Belle II data

We present a measurement of the B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓB^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} (ℓ=e,μ\ell=e,μ) branching ratio and of the CKM parameter ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| using signal decays accompanied by a fully reconstructed BB meson. The Belle II data set of electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance, corresponding to 189.3 \,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity, is analyzed. With the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert form factor parameterization, the parameters ηEWF(1)∣Vcb∣η_{\rm EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| and ρ2ρ^{2} are extracted, where ηEWη_{\rm EW} is an electroweak correction, F(1)F(1) is a normalization factor and ρ2ρ^{2} is a form factor shape parameter. We reconstruct 516 signal decays and thereby obtain B(B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓ)=(5.27±0.22 (stat)±0.38 (syst))%\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} ) = \left(5.27 \pm 0.22~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.38~\rm{\left(syst\right)}\right) \%, ηEWF(1)∣Vcb∣×103=34.6±1.8 (stat)±1.7 (syst)η_{EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| \times 10^{3} = 34.6 \pm 1.8~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 1.7~\rm{\left(syst\right)}, and ρ2=0.94±0.18 (stat)±0.11 (syst)ρ^{2} = 0.94 \pm 0.18~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.11~\rm{\left(syst\right)}.

Search for rare decays B+→Ds(∗)+ηB^{+} \to D_{s}^{(\ast)+}η, Ds(∗)+Kˉ0D_{s}^{(\ast)+}\bar{K}^{0}, D+ηD^{+}η, and D+K0D^{+}K^{0}

We present a study of rare decay modes B+→Ds+h0B^{+} \to D_{s}^{+}h^{0}, B+→Ds∗+h0B^{+} \to D_{s}^{\ast+}h^{0}, and B+→D+h0B^{+} \to D^{+}h^{0}, where h0h^{0} denotes the neutral mesons ηη or K0K^{0}, using a data sample of (772±10)×106(772 \pm 10 ) \times 10^{6} BBˉB\bar{B} events produced at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance. The data were collected by the Belle detector operating at the asymmetric-energy KEKB collider. We observe no evidence for these decays, so we provide upper limits at the 90%\% confidence level on the branching fractions of B+→Ds+h0B^{+} \to D_{s}^{+}h^{0}, Ds∗+h0D_{s}^{\ast+}h^{0}, and D+h0D^{+}h^{0} decay modes. Along with rare decay modes, we report improved measurements of the color-suppressed decay branching fractions B(Bˉ0→D0η)\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to D^{0}η) = (26.6 ±\pm 1.2 ±\pm 2.1) ×\times 10−510^{-5} and B(Bˉ0→D0Kˉ0)\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to D^{0}\bar{K}^{0}) = (5.6 ±\pm 0.5 ±\pm 0.2) ×\times 10−510^{-5}. The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Belle II Executive Summary

Belle II is a Super BB Factory experiment, expected to record 50 ab−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collisions at the SuperKEKB accelerator until 2035. The large samples of BB mesons, charm hadrons, and tau leptons produced in the clean experimental environment of e+e−e^+e^- collisions will provide the basis of a broad and unique flavor-physics program. Belle II will pursue physics beyond the Standard Model in many ways, for example: improving the precision of weak interaction parameters, particularly Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements and phases, and thus more rigorously test the CKM paradigm, measuring lepton-flavor-violating parameters, and performing unique searches for missing-mass dark matter events. Many key measurements will be made with world-leading precision.

Evidence of a new excited charmed baryon decaying to Σc(2455)0,++π±Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} π^{\pm}

We present the study of Bˉ0→Σc(2455)0,++π±pˉ\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} π^{\pm} \bar{p} decays based on 772×106772\times 10^{6} BBˉB\bar{B} events collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. The Σc(2455)0,++Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} candidates are reconstructed via their decay to Λc+π∓Λ_{c}^{+} π^{\mp} and Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} decays to pK−π+, pKS0,pK^{-}π^{+},~pK_{S}^{0}, and Λπ+Λπ^{+} final states. The corresponding branching fractions are measured to be B(Bˉ0→Σc(2455)0π+pˉ)=(1.09±0.06±0.07)×10−4{\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0} π^{+} \bar{p}) = (1.09 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.07)\times10^{-4} and B(Bˉ0→Σc(2455)++π−pˉ)=(1.84±0.11±0.12)×10−4{\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{++} π^{-} \bar{p}) = (1.84\pm 0.11 \pm 0.12)\times 10^{-4}, which are consistent with the world average values with improved precision. A new structure is found in the MΣc(2455)0,++π±M_{Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++}π^{\pm}} spectrum with a significance of 4.2σ4.2σ including systematic uncertainty. The structure is possibly an excited Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} and is tentatively named Λc(2910)+Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}. Its mass and width are measured to be (2913.8±5.6±3.8)(2913.8 \pm 5.6 \pm 3.8) MeV/c2c^{2} and (51.8±20.0±18.8)(51.8\pm20.0 \pm 18.8) MeV, respectively. The products of branching fractions for the Λc(2910)+Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} are measured to be B(Bˉ0→Λc(2910)+pˉ)×B(Λc(2910)+→Σc(2455)0π+)=(9.5±3.6±1.6)×10−6{\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}\bar{p})\times{\cal B}(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0}π^{+}) = (9.5 \pm 3.6 \pm 1.6)\times 10^{-6} and B(Bˉ0→Λc(2910)+pˉ)×B(Λc(2910)+→Σc(2455)++π−)=(1.24±0.35±0.10)×10−5{\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Λ_{c} (2910)^{+}\bar{p})\times {\cal B}(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{++}π^{-}) = (1.24 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.10)\times 10^{-5}. Here, the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

First decay-time-dependent analysis of B0→KS0π0B^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} π^{0} at Belle II

We report measurements of the branching fraction (B\mathcal{B}) and direct CPCP-violating asymmetry (ACPA_{CP}) of the charmless decay B0→K0π0B^{0} \to K^0 π^0 at Belle II. A sample of e+e−e^{+} e^{-} collisions, corresponding to 189.8fb−1189.8 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, recorded at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance is used for the first decay-time-dependent analysis of these decays within the experiment. We reconstruct about 135 signal candidates, and measure B(B0→K0π0)=[11.0±1.2(stat)±1.0(syst)]×10−6\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to K^{0} π^{0})= [11.0 \pm 1.2 (stat) \pm 1.0 (syst)] \times 10^{-6} and ACP(B0→K0π0)=−0.41−0.32+0.30(stat)±0.09(syst)A_{CP} (B^{0} \to K^{0} π^{0})= -0.41_{-0.32}^{+0.30} (stat) \pm 0.09 (syst).

First Measurement of the Λc+→pη′Λ_c^+ \to p η' decay

We present the first measurement of the branching fraction of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) decay Λc+→pη′Λ_c^+ \to p η' with η′→ηπ+π−η' \to ηπ^+π^-, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 981 fb−1\rm fb^{-1}, collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e^{+}e−e^{-} asymmetric-energy collider. A significant Λc+Λ_c^+ signal is observed for the first time with a signal significance of 5.4σσ. The relative branching fraction with respect to the normalization mode Λc+→pK−π+Λ_c^+ \to pK^-π^+ is measured to be \begin{equation*} \frac{{\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p η')}{{\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p K^-π^+)} = (7.54 \pm 1.32 \pm 0.75) \times 10^{-3}, \end{equation*} where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Using the world-average value of B(Λc+→pK−π+)=(6.28±0.32)×10−2{\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p K^-π^+) = (6.28\pm0.32)\times10^{-2}, we obtain \begin{equation*} {\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p η') = (4.73 \pm 0.82 \pm 0.47 \pm 0.24)\times 10^{-4}, \end{equation*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and from B(Λc+→pK−π+){\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to pK^-π^+), respectively.

This analysis is based on 89.5 fb−1^{-1}, 711 fb−1^{-1}, and 121.1 fb−1^{-1} data samples collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider at the center-of-mass energies of 10.52 GeV, 10.58 GeV, and 10.86 GeV, respectively. The Ωc0Ω_{c}^{0} signal yields are extracted by fitting MΩ−ℓ+M_{Ω^{-} \ell^{+}} and MΩ−π+M_{Ω^{-}π^+} spectra. The branching fraction ratios B(Ωc0→Ω−e+νe)/B(Ωc0→Ω−π+){\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} e^{+} ν_{e})/{\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} π^+) and B(Ωc0→Ω−μ+νμ)/B(Ωc0→Ω−π+){\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} μ^{+} ν_μ)/{\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} π^+) are measured to be 1.98±0.13 (stat.)±0.08 (syst.)1.98 \pm0.13~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.08~({\rm syst.}) and 1.94±0.18 (stat.)±0.10 (syst.) 1.94 \pm 0.18~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.10~({\rm syst.}), respectively. The ratio of B(Ωc0→Ω−e+νe)/B(Ωc0→Ω−μ+νμ){\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} e^{+} ν_{e})/{\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} μ^{+} ν_μ) is measured to be 1.02±0.10 (stat.)±0.02 (syst.)1.02 \pm 0.10~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.02~({\rm syst.}), which is consistent with the expectation of lepton flavor universality.

Measurement of Branching Fraction and Longitudinal Polarization in B0→ρ+ρ−B^0 \to ρ^+ ρ^- Decays at Belle II

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and longitudinal polarization of B0→ρ+ρ−B^0 \to ρ^+ ρ^- decays. SuperKEKB electron-positron collision data corresponding to 189~fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity and containing 198×106BBˉ198 \times 10^6 B\bar{B} pairs collected with the Belle II detector are used. We obtain \begin{eqnarray*} \mathcal{B}(B^0\toρ^+ρ^-) &=& [2.67\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{syst})] \times 10^{-5}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} f_L &=& 0.956\pm0.035\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm 0.033\,(\mathrm{syst}), \end{eqnarray*} These results are consistent with previous measurements and can be used to constrain penguin pollution and to extract the quark-mixing angle ϕ2ϕ_2.

Search for a light Higgs boson in single-photon decays of Υ(1S)Υ(1S) using Υ(2S)→π+π−Υ(1S)Υ(2S) \to π^+ π^- Υ(1S) tagging method

We search for a light Higgs boson (A0A^0) decaying into a τ+τ−τ^+τ^- or μ+μ−μ^+μ^- pair in the radiative decays of Υ(1S)Υ(1S). The production of Υ(1S)Υ(1S) mesons is tagged by Υ(2S)→π+π−Υ(1S)Υ(2S)\to π^+ π^- Υ(1S) transitions, using 158 million Υ(2S)Υ(2S) events accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. No significant A0A^0 signals in the mass range from the τ+τ−τ^+τ^- or μ+μ−μ^+μ^- threshold to 9.2 GeV/c2c^2 are observed. We set the upper limits at 90\% credibility level (C.L.) on the product branching fractions for Υ(1S)→γA0Υ(1S)\to γA^0 and A0→τ+τ−A^0\to τ^+τ^- varying from 3.8×10−63.8\times10^{-6} to 1.5×10−41.5\times10^{-4}. Our results represent an approximately twofold improvement on the current world best upper limits for the Υ(1S)→γA0(→τ+τ−)Υ(1S)\to γA^0(\to τ^+τ^-) production. For A0→μ+μ−A^0\to μ^+μ^-, the upper limits on the product branching fractions for Υ(1S)→γA0Υ(1S)\to γA^0 and A0→μ+μ−A^0\to μ^+μ^- are at the same level as the world average limits, and vary from 3.1×10−73.1\times10^{-7} to 1.6×10−51.6\times10^{-5}. The upper limits at 90\% C.L. on the Yukawa coupling fΥ(1S)f_{Υ(1S)} and mixing angle sinθA0{\rm sin}θ_{A^0} are also given.

Search for charged lepton flavor violating decays of Υ(1S)Υ(1S)

We present a search for the charged lepton-flavor-violating decays Υ(1S)→ℓℓ′Υ(1S)\rightarrow\ell\ell^\prime and radiative charged lepton-flavour-violating decays Υ(1S)→γℓℓ′Υ(1S)\rightarrowγ\ell\ell^\prime [ℓ,ℓ′=e,μ,τ\ell,\ell^\prime = e, μ, τ] using the 158 million Υ(2S)Υ(2S) sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. This search uses Υ(1S)Υ(1S) mesons produced in π+π−Υ(1S)π^+π^-Υ(1S) transitions. We do not find any significant signal, so we provide upper limits on the branching fractions at the 90% confidence level.

Snowmass 2021 White Paper on Upgrading SuperKEKB with a Polarized Electron Beam: Discovery Potential and Proposed Implementation

Upgrading the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider with polarized electron beams opens a new program of precision physics at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. This white paper describes the physics potential of this `Chiral Belle' program. It includes projections for precision measurements of sin⁡2θW\sin^2θ_W that can be obtained from independent left-right asymmetry measurements of e+e−e^+e^- transitions to pairs of electrons, muons, taus, charm and b-quarks. The sin⁡2θW\sin^2θ_W precision obtainable at SuperKEKB will match that of the LEP/SLC world average, but at the centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Measurements of the couplings for muons, charm, and bb-quarks will be substantially improved and the existing 3σ3σ discrepancy between the SLC ALRA_{LR} and LEP AFBbA_{FB}^b measurements will be addressed. Precision measurements of neutral current universality will be more than an order of magnitude more precise than currently available. As the energy scale is well away from the Z0Z^0-pole, the precision measurements will have sensitivity to the presence of a parity-violating dark sector gauge boson, ZdarkZ_{\rm dark}. The program also enables the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment g−2g-2 form factor of the ττ to be made at an unprecedented level of precision. A precision of 10−510^{-5} level is accessible with 40~ab−1^{-1} and with more data it would start to approach the 10−610^{-6} level. This technique would provide the most precise information from the third generation about potential new physics explanations of the muon g−2g-2 4σ4σ anomaly. Additional ττ and QCD physics programs enabled or enhanced with having polarized electron beams are also discussed in this White Paper. This paper includes a summary of the path forward in R&D and next steps required to implement this upgrade and access its exciting discovery potential.

Combined analysis of Belle and Belle II data to determine the CKM angle ϕ3 ϕ_{3} using B+→D(KS0h−h+)h+B^+ \to D(K_{S}^0 h^- h^+) h^+ decays

We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle angle ϕ3 ϕ_{3} (also known as~γγ) using a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of \linebreak B+→D(KS0h+h−)h+B^+\to D\left(K_{S}^{0}h^{+}h^{-}\right)h^+, where DD is either a D0D^0 or Dˉ0\bar{D}{}^0 meson and hh is either a ππ or KK. This is the first measurement that simultaneously uses Belle and Belle~II data, combining samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of \SI{711}{fb^{-1}} and \SI{128}{fb^{-1}}, respectively. All data were accumulated from energy-asymmetric e+e−e^+e^- collisions at a centre-of-mass energy corresponding to the mass of the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance. We measure ϕ3=(78.4±11.4±0.5±1.0)∘ϕ_3 = \left(78.4 \pm 11.4 \pm 0.5 \pm 1.0 \right)^{\circ}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is from the uncertainties on external measurements of the DD-decay strong-phase parameters.

The first and second uncertainties above are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third ones arise from the uncertainty of the branching fraction of Ξc0→Ξ−π+Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+.

Transverse momentum dependent forward neutron single spin asymmetries in transversely polarized pp++pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV

In 2015, the PHENIX collaboration has measured very forward (η>6.8η>6.8) single-spin asymmetries of inclusive neutrons in transversely polarized proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at a center of mass energy of 200 GeV. A previous publication from this data set concentrated on the nuclear dependence of such asymmetries. In this measurement the explicit transverse-momentum dependence of inclusive neutron single spin asymmetries for proton-proton collisions is extracted using a bootstrapping-unfolding technique on the transverse momenta. This explicit transverse-momentum dependence will help improve the understanding of the mechanisms that create these asymmetries.

The result is also compared to leading-order nonrelativistic QCD calculations coupled to a color-glass-condensate description of the low-xx gluons in the proton at low transverse momentum (pTp_T) and to next-to-leading order nonrelativistic QCD calculations for the rest of the pTp_T range. These calculations overestimate the data at low pTp_T. While consistent with the data within uncertainties above ≈3\approx3 GeV/cc, the calculations are systematically below the data. The total cross section times the branching ratio is BR $dσ^{J/ψ}_{pp}/dy (1.2<|y|<2.2, 0<p_T<10~\mbox{GeV/$c$}) =$ 54.3 ±\pm 0.5 (stat) ±\pm 5.5 (syst) nb.

Measurement of J/ψJ/ψ at forward and backward rapidity in pp+pp, pp+A+Al, pp+A+Au, and 3^3He+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200~{\rm GeV}

Charmonium is a valuable probe in heavy-ion collisions to study the properties of the quark gluon plasma, and is also an interesting probe in small collision systems to study cold nuclear matter effects, which are also present in large collision systems. With the recent observations of collective behavior of produced particles in small system collisions, measurements of the modification of charmonium in small systems have become increasingly relevant. We present the results of J/ψJ/ψ measurements at forward and backward rapidity in various small collision systems, pp++pp, pp++Al, pp++Au and 3^3He++Au, at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. The results are presented in the form of the observable RABR_{AB}, the nuclear modification factor, a measure of the ratio of the J/ψJ/ψ invariant yield compared to the scaled yield in pp++pp collisions. We examine the rapidity, transverse momentum, and collision centrality dependence of nuclear effects on J/ψJ/ψ production with different projectile sizes pp and 3^3He, and different target sizes Al and Au. The modification is found to be strongly dependent on the target size, but to be very similar for pp++Au and 3^{3}He++Au. However, for 0%--20% central collisions at backward rapidity, the modification for 3^{3}He++Au is found to be smaller than that for pp++Au, with a mean fit to the ratio of 0.89±0.030.89\pm0.03(stat)±0.08{\pm}0.08(syst), possibly indicating final state effects due to the larger projectile size.

Measurement of charged pion double spin asymmetries at midrapidity in longitudinally polarized pp++pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the longitudinal double spin asymmetries, ALLA_{LL}, for charged pions at midrapidity (∣η∣<0.35|η|<0.35) in longitudinally polarized pp++pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV. These measurements are sensitive to the gluon spin contribution to the total spin of the proton in the parton momentum fraction xx range between 0.04 and 0.09. One can infer the sign of the gluon polarization from the ordering of pion asymmetries with charge alone. The asymmetries are found to be consistent with global quantum-chromodynamics fits of deep-inelastic scattering and data at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV, which show a nonzero positive contribution of gluon spin to the proton spin.

Nuclear-modification factor of charged hadrons at forward and backward rapidity in pp++Al and pp++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment has studied nuclear effects in pp++Al and pp++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV on charged hadron production at forward rapidity (1.4<η<2.41.4<η<2.4, pp-going direction) and backward rapidity (−2.2<η<−1.2-2.2<η<-1.2, AA-going direction). Such effects are quantified by measuring nuclear modification factors as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in various collision multiplicity selections. In central pp++Al and pp++Au collisions, a suppression (enhancement) is observed at forward (backward) rapidity compared to the binary scaled yields in pp+pp collisions. The magnitude of enhancement at backward rapidity is larger in pp++Au collisions than in pp++Al collisions, which have a smaller number of participating nucleons. However, the results at forward rapidity show a similar suppression within uncertainties. The results in the integrated centrality are compared with calculations using nuclear parton distribution functions, which show a reasonable agreement at the forward rapidity but fail to describe the backward rapidity enhancement.

Production of π0π^0 and ηη mesons in U++U collisions at sNN=192\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured π0π^0 and ηη mesons at midrapidity in U++U collisions at sNN=192\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192 GeV in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the π0(η)→γγπ^0(η)\rightarrowγγ decay modes. A strong suppression of π0π^0 and ηη meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central U++U collisions relative to binary scaled pp++pp results. Yields of π0π^0 and ηη mesons measured in U++U collisions show similar suppression pattern to the ones measured in Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The ηη/π0π^0 ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum, and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and e+e−e^+e^- collisions.

Experimental Validation of the Largest Calculated Isospin-Symmetry-Breaking Effect in a Superallowed Fermi Decay

A precision measurement of the gamma yields following the beta decay of 32Cl has determined its isobaric analogue branch to be (22.47^{+0.21}_{-0.19})%. Since it is an almost pure Fermi decay, we can also determine the amount of isospin-symmetry breaking in this superallowed transition. We find a very large value, delta_C=5.3(9)%, in agreement with a shell-model calculation. This result sets a benchmark for isospin-symmetry-breaking calculations and lends support for similarly-calculated, yet smaller, corrections that are currently applied to 0+ -> 0+ transitions for tests of the Standard Model.

The beta Decay of 32Cl: Precision gamma-Ray Spectroscopy and a Measurement of Isospin-Symmetry Breaking

Background: Models to calculate small isospin-symmetry-breaking effects in superallowed Fermi decays have been placed under scrutiny in recent years. A stringent test of these models is to measure transitions for which the correction is predicted to be large. The decay of 32Cl decay provides such a test case. Purpose: To improve the gamma yields following the beta decay of 32Cl and to determine the ft values of the the beta branches, particularly the one to the isobaric-analogue state in 32S. Method: Reaction-produced and recoil-spectrometer-separated 32Cl is collected in tape and transported to a counting location where beta-gamma coincidences are measured with a precisely-calibrated HPGe detector. Results: The precision on the gamma yields for most of the known beta branches has been improved by about an order of magnitude, and many new transitions have been observed. We have determined 32Cl-decay transition strengths extending up to E_x~11 MeV. The ft value for the decay to the isobaric-analogue state in 32S has been measured. A comparison to a shell-model calculation shows good agreement. CONCLUSIONS: We have experimentally determined the isospin-symmetry-breaking correction to the superallowed transition of this decay to be (δ_C-δ_NS)_exp=5.4(9)%, significantly larger than for any other known superallowed Fermi transition. This correction agrees with a shell-model calculation, which yields δ_C-δ_NS=4.8(5)%. Our results also provide a way to improve the measured ft values for the beta decay of 32Ar.

Branching ratios for the beta decay of 21Na

We have measured the beta-decay branching ratio for the transition from 21Na to the first excited state of 21Ne. A recently published test of the standard model, which was based on a measurement of the beta-nu correlation in the decay of 21Na, depended on this branching ratio. However, until now only relatively imprecise (and, in some cases, contradictory) values existed for it. Our new result, 4.74(4)%, reduces but does not remove the reported discrepancy with the standard model.
