Measurement of solar neutrino interaction rate below 3.49 MeV in Super-Kamiokande-IV

Super-Kamiokande has observed $^{8}\text{B}$ solar neutrino elastic scattering at recoil electron kinetic energies ($E_{kin}$) as low as 3.49 MeV to study neutrino flavor conversion within the sun. At SK-observable energies, these conversions are dominated by the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect. An upturn in the electron neutrino survival probability in which vacuum neutrino oscillations become dominant is predicted to occur at lower energies, but radioactive background increases exponentially with decreasing energy. New machine learning approaches provide substantial background reduction below 3.49 MeV such that statistical extraction of solar neutrino interactions becomes feasible. This article presents an analysis of the solar neutrino interaction rate at $E_{kin}$ < 3.49 MeV with the full SK-IV period, using data from a wideband intelligent trigger when available and with a boosted decision tree for event selection. A solar neutrino signal is observed between 2.99 MeV < $E_{kin}$ < 3.49 MeV with $2.76σ$ significance and a data to unoscillated MC ratio of $0.307^{+0.112}_{-0.111}$. This additional low energy data has a negligible effect on the $1σ$ intervals of the fits to the solar neutrino energy spectrum but has a noticeable effect on the best fit when using the exponential parameterization.

A search for correlated low-energy electron antineutrinos in KamLAND with gamma-ray bursts

We present the results of a time-coincident event search for low-energy electron antineutrinos in the KamLAND detector with gamma-ray bursts from the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network and Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor. Using a variable coincidence time window of $\pm$500s plus the duration of each gamma-ray burst, no statistically significant excess above background is observed. We place the world's most stringent 90% confidence level upper limit on the electron antineutrino fluence below 17.5 MeV. Assuming a Fermi-Dirac neutrino energy spectrum from the gamma-ray burst source, we use the available redshift data to constrain the electron antineutrino luminosity and effective temperature.

Abundances of uranium and thorium elements in Earth estimated by geoneutrino spectroscopy

The decay of the primordial isotopes $^{238}\mathrm{U}$, $^{235}\mathrm{U}$, $^{232}\mathrm{Th}$, and $^{40}\mathrm{K}$ have contributed to the terrestrial heat budget throughout the Earth's history. Hence the individual abundance of those isotopes are key parameters in reconstructing contemporary Earth model. The geoneutrinos produced by the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium have been observed with the Kamioka Liquid-Scintillator Antineutrino Detector (KamLAND). Those measurements have been improved with more than 18-year observation time, and improvements in detector background levels mainly by an 8-year almost rector-free period now permit spectroscopy with geoneutrinos. Our results yield the first constraint on both uranium and thorium heat contributions. Herein the KamLAND result is consistent with geochemical estimations based on elemental abundances of chondritic meteorites and mantle peridotites. The High-Q model is disfavored at 99.76% C.L. and a fully radiogenic model is excluded at 5.2$σ$ assuming a homogeneous heat producing element distribution in the mantle.

Erosion of N = 28 shell closure: Shape coexistence and monopole transition

Background: In neutron-rich nuclei neighboring 42Si, the quenching of the N = 28 shell gap occurs and is expected to induce the shape coexistence in their excitation spectra. Purpose: We show that different nuclear shapes coexist in N = 28 isotones 40Mg, 42Si, and 44S, and investigate observables to probe it. Method: Antisymmetrized molecular dynamics with Gogny D1S density functional is applied to describe the shape coexistence phenomena without ad hoc assumption of the nuclear shape. Results: We find that rigid shapes with different deformations coexist in the ground and the first excited 0+ states of 40Mg and 42Si, while in 44S the states exhibit large-amplitude collective motion, which does not have any particular shape. These characteristics are reflected well in the monopole transition strengths. Conclusion: The quenching of the N = 28 shell gap leads to the unique shape coexistence in the N = 28 isotones, which can be probed by the monopole transition strengths.

KamLAND's search for correlated low-energy electron antineutrinos with astrophysical neutrinos from IceCube

We report the results of a search for MeV-scale astrophysical neutrinos in KamLAND presented as an excess in the number of coincident neutrino interactions associated with the publicly available high-energy neutrino datasets from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. We find no statistically significant excess in the number of observed low-energy electron antineutrinos in KamLAND, given a coincidence time window of $\pm$500s, $\pm$1,000s, $\pm$3,600s, and $\pm$10,000s around each of the IceCube neutrinos. We use this observation to present limits from 1.8 MeV to 100 MeV on the electron antineutrino fluence, assuming a mono-energetic flux. We then compare the results to several astrophysical measurements performed by IceCube and place a limit at the 90% confidence level on the electron antineutrino isotropic thermal luminosity from the TXS 0506+056 blazar.

Measurements of protons and charged pions emitted from $ν_μ$ charged-current interactions on iron at a mean neutrino energy of 1.49$\,$GeV using a nuclear emulsion detector

This study conducted an analysis of muons, protons, and charged pions emitted from $ν_μ$ charged-current interactions on iron using a nuclear emulsion detector. The emulsion detector with a 65$\,$kg iron target was exposed to a neutrino beam corresponding to 4.0$\times$10$^{19}$ protons on target with a mean neutrino energy of 1.49$\,$GeV. The measurements were performed at a momentum threshold of 200 (50)$\,$MeV/$c$ for protons (pions), which are the lowest momentum thresholds attempted up to now. The measured quantities are the multiplicities, emission angles, and momenta of the muons, protons, and charged pions. In addition to these inclusive measurements, exclusive measurements such as the muon-proton emission-angle correlations of specific channels and the opening angle between the protons of CC0$π$2$p$ events were performed. The data were compared to Monte Carlo (MC) predictions and some significant differences were observed. The results of the study demonstrate the capability of detailed measurements of neutrino-nucleus interactions using a nuclear emulsion detector to improve neutrino interaction models.

Mott-driven BEC-BCS crossover in a doped spin liquid candidate, kappa-(BEDT-TTF)4Hg2.89Br8

The pairing of interacting fermions leading to superfluidity has two limiting regimes: the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) scheme for weakly interacting degenerate fermions and the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of bosonic pairs of strongly interacting fermions. While the superconductivity that emerges in most metallic systems is the BCS-like electron pairing, strongly correlated electrons with poor Fermi liquidity can condense into the unconventional BEC-like pairs. Quantum spin liquids harbor extraordinary spin correlation free from order and the superconductivity that possibly emerges by carrier doping of the spin liquids is expected to have a peculiar pairing nature. The present study experimentally explores the nature of the pairing condensate in a doped spin-liquid candidate material and under varying pressure, which changes the electron-electron Coulombic interactions across the Mott critical value in the system. The transport measurements reveal that the superconductivity at low pressures is a BEC-like condensate from a non-Fermi liquid and crosses over to a BCS-like condensate from a Fermi liquid at high pressures. The Nernst-effect measurements distinctively illustrate the two regimes of the pairing in terms of its robustness to the magnetic field. The present Mott tuning of the BEC-BCS crossover can be compared to the Feshbach tuning of the BEC-BCS crossover of fermionic cold atoms.

Possible halo structure of $^{62,72}$Ca by forbidden-state-free locally peaked Gaussians

In order to efficiently describe nucleon orbits around a heavy core nucleus, we propose locally peaked Gaussians orthogonalized to the occupied bound states in the core. We show the advantage of those functions in both numerical stability and fast convergence by taking examples of touchstone calcium isotopes $^{62,72}$Ca in $^{60,70}{\rm Ca}+n+n$ three-body models. Both weakly bound configurations and continuum coupling effect are taken into account. We evaluate the neutron radii and the occupation probabilities of two-neutron configurations not only for the ground state but also for some particle-bound excited states by varying the strength of the core-neutron interaction. The emergence of the halo structure in the ground state depends on the energy difference between $2s_{1/2}$ and $0g_{9/2}$ orbits. Two-neutron [consisting of $(s_{1/2})^2$ configuration] and one-neutron [consisting of $(g_{9/2}s_{1/2})$ configuration] halo structure of $^{62}$Ca can coexist in narrow energy spacing provided that both of $2s_{1/2}$ and $0g_{9/2}$ orbits are almost degenerate and barely bound. The ground-state structure of $^{72}$Ca is likely to be a two-neutron halo, although its emergence depends on the position of the $2s_{1/2}$ level.

Pre-Supernova Alert System for Super-Kamiokande

In 2020, the Super-Kamiokande (SK) experiment moved to a new stage (SK-Gd) in which gadolinium (Gd) sulfate octahydrate was added to the water in the detector, enhancing the efficiency to detect thermal neutrons and consequently improving the sensitivity to low energy electron anti-neutrinos from inverse beta decay (IBD) interactions. SK-Gd has the potential to provide early alerts of incipient core-collapse supernovae through detection of electron anti-neutrinos from thermal and nuclear processes responsible for the cooling of massive stars before the gravitational collapse of their cores. These pre-supernova neutrinos emitted during the silicon burning phase can exceed the energy threshold for IBD reactions. We present the sensitivity of SK-Gd to pre-supernova stars and the techniques used for the development of a pre-supernova alarm based on the detection of these neutrinos in SK, as well as prospects for future SK-Gd phases with higher concentrations of Gd. For the current SK-Gd phase, high-confidence alerts for Betelgeuse could be issued up to nine hours in advance of the core-collapse itself.

Scintillator ageing of the T2K near detectors from 2010 to 2021

The T2K experiment widely uses plastic scintillator as a target for neutrino interactions and an active medium for the measurement of charged particles produced in neutrino interactions at its near detector complex. Over 10 years of operation the measured light yield recorded by the scintillator based subsystems has been observed to degrade by 0.9--2.2\% per year. Extrapolation of the degradation rate through to 2040 indicates the recorded light yield should remain above the lower threshold used by the current reconstruction algorithms for all subsystems. This will allow the near detectors to continue contributing to important physics measurements during the T2K-II and Hyper-Kamiokande eras. Additionally, work to disentangle the degradation of the plastic scintillator and wavelength shifting fibres shows that the reduction in light yield can be attributed to the ageing of the plastic scintillator.

Search for neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of $^{136}$Xe in XMASS-I

A search for the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of $^{136}$Xe was conducted with the liquid-xenon detector XMASS-I using $\rm 327\; kg \times 800.0 \; days$ of the exposure. The pulse shape discrimination based on the scintillation decay time constant which distinguishes $γ$-rays including the signal and $β$-rays was used to enhance the search sensitivity. No significant signal excess was observed from the energy spectrum fitting with precise background evaluation, and we set a lower limit of the half life of 3.7 $\times$ 10$^{24}$ years at 90$\%$ confidence level. This is the first experimental constraint of the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of $^{136}$Xe.

Search for proton decay via $p\rightarrow μ^+K^0$ in 0.37 megaton-years exposure of Super-Kamiokande

We searched for proton decay via $p\toμ^+K^0$ in 0.37\,Mton$\cdot$years of data collected between 1996 and 2018 from the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov experiment. The selection criteria were defined separately for $K^0_S$ and $K^0_L$ channels. No significant event excess has been observed. As a result of this analysis, which extends the previous search by an additional 0.2\,Mton$\cdot$years of exposure and uses an improved event reconstruction, we set a lower limit of $3.6\times10^{33}$ years on the proton lifetime.

Search for solar electron anti-neutrinos due to spin-flavor precession in the Sun with Super-Kamiokande-IV

Due to a very low production rate of electron anti-neutrinos ($\barν_e$) via nuclear fusion in the Sun, a flux of solar $\barν_e$ is unexpected. An appearance of $\barν_e$ in solar neutrino flux opens a new window for the new physics beyond the standard model. In particular, a spin-flavor precession process is expected to convert an electron neutrino into an electron anti-neutrino (${ν_e\to\barν_e}$) when neutrino has a finite magnetic moment. In this work, we have searched for solar $\barν_e$ in the Super-Kamiokande experiment, using neutron tagging to identify their inverse beta decay signature. We identified 78 $\barν_e$ candidates for neutrino energies of 9.3 to 17.3 MeV in 2970.1 live days with a fiducial volume of 22.5 kiloton water (183.0 kton$\cdot$year exposure). The energy spectrum has been consistent with background predictions and we thus derived a 90% confidence level upper limit of ${4.7\times10^{-4}}$ on the $ν_e\to\barν_e$ conversion probability in the Sun. We used this result to evaluate the sensitivity of future experiments, notably the Super-Kamiokande Gadolinium (SK-Gd) upgrade.

Search for supernova neutrinos and constraint on the galactic star formation rate with the KamLAND data

We present the results of a search for core-collapse supernova neutrinos, using long-term KamLAND data from 2002 March 9 to 2020 April 25. We focus on the electron antineutrinos emitted from supernovae in the energy range of 1.8--111 MeV. Supernovae will make a neutrino event cluster with the duration of $\sim$10 s in the KamLAND data. We find no neutrino clusters and give the upper limit on the supernova rate as to be 0.15 yr$^{-1}$ with a 90% confidence level. The detectable range, which corresponds to a >95% detection probability, is 40--59 kpc and 65--81 kpc for core-collapse supernovae and failed core-collapse supernovae, respectively. This paper proposes to convert the supernova rate obtained by the neutrino observation to the Galactic star formation rate. Assuming a modified Salpeter-type initial mass function, the upper limit on the Galactic star formation rate is <(17.5--22.7) $M_{\odot} \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ with a 90% confidence level.

Wide angle acceptance and high-speed track recognition in nuclear emulsion

A nuclear emulsion film is a three-dimensional tracking device that is widely used in cosmic-ray and high energy physics experiments. Scanning with a wide angle acceptance is crucial for obtaining track information in emulsion films. This study presents a new method developed for wide angle acceptance and high-speed track recognition of nuclear emulsion films for neutrino-nucleus interaction measurements. The nuclear emulsion technique can be used to measure tracks of charged particles from neutrino interactions with a low momentum threshold. The detection of the particles with a wide angle acceptance is essential for obtaining detailed information on the interactions in the sub- and multi-GeV neutrino energy region. In the new method developed for a neutrino interaction measurement in J-PARC called NINJA, the angle acceptance is covered up to $|\tanθ_{x(y)}| < 5.0$ (80% of all solid angles) with $150\,\mathrm{m^2/year}$. This method can also be used to improve the angle accuracy and recognition efficiency of the tracks.

A Search for Charged Excitation of Dark Matter with the KamLAND-Zen Detector

There are many theories where a dark matter particle is part of a multiplet with an electrically charged state. If WIMP dark matter ($χ^{0}$) is accompanied by a charged excited state ($χ^{-}$) separated by a small mass difference, it can form a stable bound state with a nucleus. In supersymmetric models, the $χ^{0}$ and the $χ^{-}$ could be the neutralino and a charged slepton, such as the neutralino-stau degenerate model. The formation binding process is expected to result in an energy deposition of {\it O}(1--10 MeV), making it suitable for detection in large liquid scintillator detectors. We describe new constraints on the bound state formation with a xenon nucleus using the KamLAND-Zen 400 Phase-II dataset. In order to enlarge the searchable parameter space, all xenon isotopes in the detector were used. For a benchmark parameter set of $m_{χ^{0}} = 100$ GeV and $Δm = 10$ MeV, this study sets the most stringent upper limits on the recombination cross section $\langleσv\rangle$ and the decay-width of $χ^{-}$ of $2.0 \times 10^{-31}$ ${\rm cm^3/s}$ and $1.1 \times 10^{-18}$ GeV, respectively (90\% confidence level).

Calculable microscopic theory for $^{12}$C($α, γ$)$^{16}$O cross section near Gamow window

$^{12}$C$(α, γ)^{16}$O radiative-capture process is a key reaction to produce the element of oxygen in stars. Measuring the cross section near the Gamow window is extremely hard because it is too small. To make a theoretical contribution towards resolving the long-standing problem, I present a microscopic formulation that aims at providing all materials needed to calculate the cross section. The states of $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O relevant to the reaction are respectively described with fully microscopic 3 $α$-particle and 4 $α$-particle configurations, in which the relative motion among the $α$ particles is expanded in terms of correlated Gaussian basis functions. The configuration space has the advantage of being able to well describe the reduced $α$-width amplitudes of the states of $^{16}$O. Both electric dipole and electric quadrupole transitions are responsible for the radiative-capture process. The $α$ particle is described with a $(0s)^4$ configuration admixed with a small amount of an isospin $T=1$ impurity component, which is crucially important to account for the isovector electric dipole transition. The isoscalar electric dipole operators are also taken into account up to the first order beyond the long-wavelength approximation. All the necessary ingredients are provided to make the paper self-contained and ready for numerical computations.

Constraint on the Matter-Antimatter Symmetry-Violating Phase in Neutrino Oscillations

The current laws of physics do not explain the observed imbalance of matter and antimatter in the universe. Sakharov proposed that an explanation would require the violation of CP symmetry between matter and antimatter. The only CP violation observed so far is in the weak interactions of quarks, and it is too small to explain the matter-antimatter imbalance of the universe. It has been shown that CP violation in the lepton sector could generate the matter-antimatter disparity through the process called leptogenesis. The quantum mixing of neutrinos, the neutral leptons in the Standard Model, provides a potential source of CP violation through a complex phase dCP, which may have consequences for theoretical models of leptogenesis. This CP violation can be measured in muon neutrino to electron neutrino oscillations and the corresponding antineutrino oscillations, which are experimentally accessible with accelerator-produced beams as established by the T2K experiment. Until now, the value of dCP has not been significantly constrained by neutrino oscillation experiments. Here the T2K collaboration reports a measurement that favors large enhancement of the neutrino oscillation probability, excluding values of dCP which result in a large enhancement of the observed anti-neutrino oscillation probability at three standard deviations (3 sigma). The 3 sigma confidence level interval for dCP, which is cyclic and repeats every 2pi, is [-3.41,-0.03] for the so-called normal mass ordering, and [-2.54,-0.32] for the inverted mass ordering. Our results show an indication of CP violation in the lepton sector. Herein we establish methods for sensitive searches for matter-antimatter asymmetry in neutrino oscillations using accelerator-produced neutrino beams. Future measurements with larger data samples will determine whether the leptonic CP violation is larger than the quark sector CP violation.

Description of isospin mixing by a generator coordinate method

Background: The isospin mixing is an interesting feature of atomic nuclei. It plays a crucial role in astrophysical nuclear reactions. However, it is not straightforward for variational nuclear structure models to describe it. Purpose: We propose a tractable method to describe the isospin mixing within a framework of the generator coordinate method and demonstrate its usability. Method: We generate the basis wave functions by applying the Fermi transition operator to the wave functions of isobars. The superposition of these basis wave functions and variationally obtained wave functions quantitatively describes the isospin mixing. Results: Using 14N as an example, we demonstrate that our method reasonably describes both T = 0 and 1 states and their mixing. Energy spectrum and E1 transition strengths are compared with the experimental data to confirm isospin mixing. Conclusion: The proposed method is effective enough to describe isospin mixing and is useful, for example, when we discuss α capture reactions of N = Z nuclei.

First Gadolinium Loading to Super-Kamiokande

In order to improve Super-Kamiokande's neutron detection efficiency and to thereby increase its sensitivity to the diffuse supernova neutrino background flux, 13 tons of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ (gadolinium sulfate octahydrate) was dissolved into the detector's otherwise ultrapure water from July 14 to August 17, 2020, marking the start of the SK-Gd phase of operations. During the loading, water was continuously recirculated at a rate of 60 m$^3$/h, extracting water from the top of the detector and mixing it with concentrated $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ solution to create a 0.02% solution of the Gd compound before injecting it into the bottom of the detector. A clear boundary between the Gd-loaded and pure water was maintained through the loading, enabling monitoring of the loading itself and the spatial uniformity of the Gd concentration over the 35 days it took to reach the top of the detector. During the subsequent commissioning the recirculation rate was increased to 120 m$^3$/h, resulting in a constant and uniform distribution of Gd throughout the detector and water transparency equivalent to that of previous pure-water operation periods. Using an Am-Be neutron calibration source the mean neutron capture time was measured to be $115\pm1$ $μ$s, which corresponds to a Gd concentration of $111\pm2$ ppm, as expected for this level of Gd loading. This paper describes changes made to the water circulation system for this detector upgrade, the Gd loading procedure, detector commissioning, and the first neutron calibration measurements in SK-Gd.

Limits on astrophysical antineutrinos with the KamLAND experiment

We report on a search for electron antineutrinos ($\barν_e$) from astrophysical sources in the neutrino energy range 8.3 to 30.8 MeV with the KamLAND detector. In an exposure of 6.72 kton-year of the liquid scintillator, we observe 18 candidate events via the inverse beta decay reaction. Although there is a large background uncertainty from neutral current atmospheric neutrino interactions, we find no significant excess over background model predictions. Assuming several supernova relic neutrino spectra, we give upper flux limits of 60--110 cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (90% CL) in the analysis range and present a model-independent flux. We also set limits on the annihilation rates for light dark matter pairs to neutrino pairs. These data improves on the upper probability limit of $^{8}$B solar neutrinos converting into $\barν_e$'s, $P_{ν_e \rightarrow \barν_e} < 3.5\times10^{-5}$ (90% CL) assuming an undistorted $\barν_e$ shape. This corresponds to a solar $\barν_e$ flux of 60 cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (90% CL) in the analysis energy range.

Search for Solar Flare Neutrinos with the KamLAND detector

We report the result of a search for neutrinos in coincidence with solar flares from the GOES flare database. The search was performed on a 10.8 kton-year exposure of KamLAND collected from 2002 to 2019. This large exposure allows us to explore previously unconstrained parameter space for solar flare neutrinos. We found no statistical excess of neutrinos and established 90% confidence level upper limits of $8.4 \times 10^7$ cm$^{-2}$ ($3.0 \times 10^{9}$ cm$^{-2}$) on electron anti-neutrino (electron neutrino) fluence at 20 MeV normalized to the X12 flare, assuming that the neutrino fluence is proportional to the X-ray intensity.

Sensitivity of the SHiP experiment to dark photons decaying to a pair of charged particles

Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m$_{γ^{\mathrm{D}}}$ and its mixing parameter with the photon, $\varepsilon$. The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m$_{γ^{\mathrm{D}}}$ ranging between 0.8 and 3.3$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$ GeV, and $\varepsilon^2$ ranging between $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-17}$.

First combined measurement of the muon neutrino and antineutrino charged-current cross section without pions in the final state at T2K

This paper presents the first combined measurement of the double-differential muon neutrino and antineutrino charged-current cross sections with no pions in the final state on hydrocarbon at the off-axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The data analyzed in this work comprise 5.8$\times$10$^{20}$ and 6.3$\times$10$^{20}$ protons on target in neutrino and antineutrino mode respectively, at a beam energy peak of 0.6 GeV. Using the two measured cross sections, the sum, difference and asymmetry were calculated with the aim of better understanding the nuclear effects involved in such interactions. The extracted measurements have been compared with the prediction from different Monte Carlo generators and theoretical models showing that the difference between the two cross sections have interesting sensitivity to nuclear effects.

Neutron-Antineutron Oscillation Search using a 0.37 Megaton$\cdot$Year Exposure of Super-Kamiokande

As a baryon number violating process with $ΔB=2$, neutron-antineutron oscillation ($n\to\bar n$) provides a unique test of baryon number conservation. We have performed a search for $n\to\bar n$ oscillation with bound neutrons in Super-Kamiokande, with the full data set from its first four run periods, representing an exposure of 0.37~Mton-years. The search used a multivariate analysis trained on simulated $n\to\bar n$ events and atmospheric neutrino backgrounds and resulted in 11 candidate events with an expected background of 9.3 events. In the absence of statistically significant excess, we derived a lower limit on $\bar n$ appearance lifetime in $^{16}$O nuclei of $3.6\times{10}^{32}$ years and on the neutron-antineutron oscillation time of $τ_{n\to\bar n} > 4.7\times10^{8}$~s at 90\% C.L..

Over 1% magnetoresistance ratio at room temperature in non-degenerate silicon-based lateral spin valves

To augment the magnetoresistance (MR) ratio of n-type non-degenerate Si-based lateral spin valves (Si-LSVs), we modify the doping profile in the Si layer and introduce a larger local strain into the Si channel by changing a capping insulator. The highest MR ratio of 1.4% is achieved in the Si-LSVs through these improvements, with significant roles played by a reduction in the resistance-area product of the ferromagnetic contacts and an enhancement of the momentum relaxation time in the Si channel.

Search for event bursts in XMASS-I associated with gravitational-wave events

We performed a search for event bursts in the XMASS-I detector associated with 11 gravitational-wave events detected during LIGO/Virgo's O1 and O2 periods. Simple and loose cuts were applied to the data collected in the full 832 kg xenon volume around the detection time of each gravitational-wave event. The data were divided into four energy regions ranging from keV to MeV. Without assuming any particular burst models, we looked for event bursts in sliding windows with various time width from 0.02 to 10 s. The search was conducted in a time window between $-$400 and $+$10,000 s from each gravitational-wave event. For the binary neutron star merger GW170817, no significant event burst was observed in the XMASS-I detector and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on neutrino fluence for the sum of all the neutrino flavors via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. The obtained upper limit was (1.3-2.1)$\times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ under the assumption of a Fermi-Dirac spectrum with average neutrino energy of 20 MeV. The neutrino fluence limits for mono-energetic neutrinos in the energy range between 14 and 100 MeV were also calculated. Among the other 10 gravitational wave events detected as the binary black hole mergers, a burst candidate with a 3.0$σ$ significance was found at 1801.95-1803.95 s in the analysis for GW151012. However, no significant deviation from the background in the reconstructed energy and position distributions was found. Considering the additional look-elsewhere effect of analyzing the 11 GW events, the significance of finding such a burst candidate associated with any of them is 2.1$σ$.

Search for exotic neutrino-electron interactions using solar neutrinos in XMASS-I

We have searched for exotic neutrino-electron interactions that could be produced by a neutrino millicharge, by a neutrino magnetic moment, or by dark photons using solar neutrinos in the XMASS-I liquid xenon detector. We observed no significant signals in 711 days of data. We obtain an upper limit for neutrino millicharge of 5.4$\times$10$^{-12} e$ at 90\% confidence level assuming all three species of neutrino have common millicharge. We also set flavor dependent limits assuming the respective neutrino flavor is the only one carrying a millicharge, $7.3 \times 10^{-12} e$ for $ν_e$, $1.1 \times 10^{-11} e$ for $ν_μ$, and $1.1 \times 10^{-11} e$ for $ν_τ$. These limits are the most stringent yet obtained from direct measurements. We also obtain an upper limit for the neutrino magnetic moment of 1.8$\times$10$^{-10}$ Bohr magnetons. In addition, we obtain upper limits for the coupling constant of dark photons in the $U(1)_{B-L}$ model of 1.3$\times$10$^{-6}$ if the dark photon mass is 1$\times 10^{-3}$ MeV$/c^{2}$, and 8.8$\times$10$^{-5}$ if it is 10 MeV$/c^{2}$.

Search for heavy neutrinos with the T2K near detector ND280

This paper reports on the search for heavy neutrinos with masses in the range $140 < M_N < 493$ MeV/c$^2$ using the off-axis near detector ND280 of the T2K experiment. These particles can be produced from kaon decays in the standard neutrino beam and then subsequently decay in ND280. The decay modes under consideration are $N \to \ell^{\pm}_α π^{\mp}$ and $N \to \ell^+_α \ell^-_β ν(\barν)$ ($α,β=e,μ$). A search for such events has been made using the Time Projection Chambers of ND280, where the background has been reduced to less than two events in the current dataset in all channels. No excess has been observed in the signal region. A combined Bayesian statistical approach has been applied to extract upper limits on the mixing elements of heavy neutrinos to electron-, muon- and tau- flavoured currents ($U_e^2$, $U_μ^2$, $U_τ^2$) as a function of the heavy neutrino mass, e.g. $U_e^2 < 10^{-9}$ at $90\%$ C.L. for a mass of $390$ MeV/c$^2$. These constraints are competitive with previous experiments.

Search for proton decay into three charged leptons in 0.37 megaton-years exposure of the Super-Kamiokande

A search for proton decay into three charged leptons has been performed by using 0.37$\,$Mton$\cdot$years of data collected in Super-Kamiokande. All possible combinations of electrons, muons and their anti-particles consistent with charge conservation were considered as decay modes. No significant excess of events has been found over the background, and lower limits on the proton lifetime divided by the branching ratio have been obtained. The limits range between $9.2\times10^{33}$ to $3.4\times10^{34}$ years at 90$\,$% confidence level, improving by more than an order of magnitude upon limits from previous experiments. A first limit has been set for the $p\rightarrowμ^-e^+e^+$ mode.

Simultaneous measurement of the muon neutrino charged-current cross section on oxygen and carbon without pions in the final state at T2K

This paper reports the first simultaneous measurement of the double differential muon neutrino charged-current cross section on oxygen and carbon without pions in the final state as a function of the outgoing muon kinematics, made at the ND280 off-axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The ratio of the oxygen and carbon cross sections is also provided to help validate various models' ability to extrapolate between carbon and oxygen nuclear targets, as is required in T2K oscillation analyses. The data are taken using a neutrino beam with an energy spectrum peaked at 0.6 GeV. The extracted measurement is compared with the prediction from different Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators, showing particular model separation for very forward-going muons. Overall, of the models tested, the result is best described using Local Fermi Gas descriptions of the nuclear ground state with RPA suppression.

Skyrmion confinement and dynamics in tracks patterned with magnetic anisotropy: theory and simulations

Skyrmion is a topologically protected spin texture excited in magnetic thin films. The radii of skyrmions are typically 10-100 nm. Because of the size, the skyrmion is expected to be a candidate for memory and novel-device usages. To realize the futuristic devices that will be using the skyrmion circuit, the tracks which guide the motion of skyrmions are needed. The tracks patterned with differences in the magnetic-anisotropy energy are well-paved without a potential pocket, whereas the tracks carved out of magnetic films have the potential pockets at corners due to the demagnetizing field. Therefore, the tracks patterned with the magnetic anisotropy plays a key role in making the skyrmion circuits. The experiment along this idea has been conducted for the hub and bent tracks. However, we have little known the motion of skyrmions in these tracks. This work aims to identify the forces acting between skyrmions and walls of the tracks. The static force on a skyrmion can be expressed as minus the gradient of the potential energy caused by the magnetic-anisotropy undulation. The potential can be estimated numerically, modeling the shape of skyrmions with their radii and domain wall widths. We find that the forces depend not only on the distance from the wall but also on the shape of skyrmions. We have also performed micromagnetic simulations where the Magnus force and the acceleration by the magnetic-anisotropy gradient are taken into account as well as the force by the walls. The simulation results show good agreement with those calculated from the modeled skyrmions.

SND@LHC

We propose to build and operate a detector that, for the first time, will measure the process $pp\toνX$ at the LHC and search for feebly interacting particles (FIPs) in an unexplored domain. The TI18 tunnel has been identified as a suitable site to perform these measurements due to very low machine-induced background. The detector will be off-axis with respect to the ATLAS interaction point (IP1) and, given the pseudo-rapidity range accessible, the corresponding neutrinos will mostly come from charm decays: the proposed experiment will thus make the first test of the heavy flavour production in a pseudo-rapidity range that is not accessible by the current LHC detectors. In order to efficiently reconstruct neutrino interactions and identify their flavour, the detector will combine in the target region nuclear emulsion technology with scintillating fibre tracking layers and it will adopt a muon identification system based on scintillating bars that will also play the role of a hadronic calorimeter. The time of flight measurement will be achieved thanks to a dedicated timing detector. The detector will be a small-scale prototype of the scattering and neutrino detector (SND) of the SHiP experiment: the operation of this detector will provide an important test of the neutrino reconstruction in a high occupancy environment.

T2K measurements of muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance using $3.13\times 10^{21}$ protons on target

We report measurements by the T2K experiment of the parameters $θ_{23}$ and $Δm^2_{32}$ which govern the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos in the three-flavor PMNS neutrino oscillation model at T2K's neutrino energy and propagation distance. Utilizing the ability of the experiment to run with either a mainly neutrino or a mainly antineutrino beam, muon-like events from each beam mode are used to measure these parameters separately for neutrino and antineutrino oscillations. Data taken from $1.49 \times 10^{21}$ protons on target (POT) in neutrino mode and $1.64 \times 10^{21}$ POT in antineutrino mode are used. The best-fit values obtained by T2K were $\sin^2\left(θ_{23}\right)=0.51^{+0.06}_{-0.07} \left(0.43^{+0.21}_{-0.05}\right)$ and $Δm^2_{32}=2.47^{+0.08}_{-0.09} \left(2.50^{+0.18}_{-0.13}\right)$\evmass for neutrinos (antineutrinos). No significant differences between the values of the parameters describing the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos were observed. An analysis using an effective two-flavor neutrino oscillation model where the sine of the mixing angle is allowed to take non-physical values larger than 1 is also performed to check the consistency of our data with the three-flavor model. Our data were found to be consistent with a physical value for the mixing angle.

The Hyper-Kamiokande Experiment -- Snowmass LOI

Hyper-Kamiokande is the next generation underground water Cherenkov detector that builds on the highly successful Super-Kamiokande experiment. The detector which has an 8.4~times larger effective volume than its predecessor will be located along the T2K neutrino beamline and utilize an upgraded J-PARC beam with 2.6~times beam power. Hyper-K's low energy threshold combined with the very large fiducial volume make the detector unique, that is expected to acquire an unprecedented exposure of 3.8~Mton$\cdot$year over a period of 20~years of operation. Hyper-Kamiokande combines an extremely diverse science program including nucleon decays, long-baseline neutrino oscillations, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astrophysical origins. The scientific scope of this program is highly complementary to liquid-argon detectors for example in sensitivity to nucleon decay channels or supernova detection modes. Hyper-Kamiokande construction has started in early 2020 and the experiment is expected to start operations in 2027. The Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration is presently being formed amongst groups from 19 countries including the United States, whose community has a long history of making significant contributions to the neutrino physics program in Japan. US physicists have played leading roles in the Kamiokande, Super-Kamiokande, EGADS, K2K, and T2K programs.

Gate-tunable spin exclusive or operation in a silicon-based spin device at room temperature

Room temperature operation of a spin exclusive or (XOR) gate was demonstrated in lateral spin valve devices with nondegenerate silicon (Si) channels. The spin XOR gate is a fundamental part of the magnetic logic gate (MLG) that enables reconfigurable and nonvolatile NAND or OR operation in one device. The device for the spin XOR gate consists of three iron (Fe)/cobalt (Co)/magnesium oxide (MgO) electrodes, i.e., two input and one output electrodes. Spins are injected into the Si channel from the input electrodes whose spin angular momentum corresponds to the binary input 1 or 0. The spin drift effect is controlled by a lateral electric field in the Si channel to adjust the spin accumulation voltages under two different parallel configurations, corresponding to (1, 1) and (0, 0), so that they exhibit the same value. As a result, the spin accumulation voltage detected by the output electrode exhibits three different voltages, represented by an XOR gate. The one-dimensional spin drift-diffusion model clearly explains the obtained XOR behavior. Charge current detection of the spin XOR gate is also demonstrated. The detected charge current has a maximum of 0.94 nA, the highest value in spin XOR gates reported thus far. Furthermore, gate voltage modulation of the spin XOR gate is also demonstrated, which enables operation of multiple MLG devices.

Measurement of neutrino and antineutrino neutral-current quasielastic-like interactions on oxygen by detecting nuclear de-excitation $γ$-rays

Neutrino- and antineutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic-like interactions are measured at Super-Kamiokande using nuclear de-excitation $γ$-rays to identify signal-like interactions in data from a $14.94 \ (16.35)\times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target exposure of the T2K neutrino (antineutrino) beam. The measured flux-averaged cross sections on oxygen nuclei are $\langle σ_{ν{\rm -NCQE}} \rangle = 1.70 \pm 0.17 ({\rm stat.}) ^{+ {\rm 0.51}}_{- {\rm 0.38}} ({\rm syst.}) \times 10^{-38} \ {\rm cm^2/oxygen}$ with a flux-averaged energy of 0.82 GeV and $\langle σ_{\barν {\rm -NCQE}} \rangle = 0.98 \pm 0.16 ({\rm stat.}) ^{+ {\rm 0.26}}_{- {\rm 0.19}} ({\rm syst.}) \times 10^{-38} \ {\rm cm^2/oxygen}$ with a flux-averaged energy of 0.68 GeV, for neutrinos and antineutrinos, respectively. These results are the most precise to date, and the antineutrino result is the first cross section measurement of this channel. They are compared with various theoretical predictions. The impact on evaluation of backgrounds to searches for supernova relic neutrinos at present and future water Cherenkov detectors is also discussed.

The analysis uses data control samples for the background subtraction and the cross section signal, defined as a single negatively charged muon and a single positively charged pion exiting from the target nucleus, is extracted using an unfolding method. The model dependent cross section, integrated over the T2K off-axis neutrino beam spectrum peaking at $0.6$~GeV, is measured to be $σ= (11.76 \pm 0.44 \text{(stat)} \pm 2.39 \text{(syst)}) \times 10^{-40} \text{cm}^2$~$\text{nucleon}^{-1}$. Various differential cross sections are measured, including the first measurement of the Adler angles for single charged pion production in neutrino interactions with heavy nuclei target.

Search for Electron Antineutrino Appearance in a Long-baseline Muon Antineutrino Beam

Electron antineutrino appearance is measured by the T2K experiment in an accelerator-produced antineutrino beam, using additional neutrino beam operation to constrain parameters of the PMNS mixing matrix. T2K observes 15 candidate electron antineutrino events with a background expectation of 9.3 events. Including information from the kinematic distribution of observed events, the hypothesis of no electron antineutrino appearance is disfavored with a significance of 2.40σ and no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions is found. A complementary analysis that introduces an additional free parameter which allows non-PMNS values of electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance also finds no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions.

A measurement of the time profile of scintillation induced by low energy gamma-rays in liquid xenon with the XMASS-I detector

We report the measurement of the emission time profile of scintillation from gamma-ray induced events in the XMASS-I 832 kg liquid xenon scintillation detector. Decay time constant was derived from a comparison of scintillation photon timing distributions between the observed data and simulated samples in order to take into account optical processes such as absorption and scattering in liquid xenon. Calibration data of radioactive sources, $^{55}$Fe, $^{241}$Am, and $^{57}$Co were used to obtain the decay time constant. Assuming two decay components, $τ_1$ and $τ_2$, the decay time constant $τ_2$ increased from 27.9 ns to 37.0 ns as the gamma-ray energy increased from 5.9 keV to 122 keV. The accuracy of the measurement was better than 1.5 ns at all energy levels. A fast decay component with $τ_1 \sim 2$ ns was necessary to reproduce data. Energy dependencies of $τ_2$ and the fraction of the fast decay component were studied as a function of the kinetic energy of electrons induced by gamma-rays. The obtained data almost reproduced previously reported results and extended them to the lower energy region relevant to direct dark matter searches.

Direct dark matter search by annual modulation in XMASS-I

A search for dark matter was conducted by looking for an annual modulation signal due to the Earth's rotation around the Sun using XMASS, a single phase liquid xenon detector. The data used for this analysis was 359.2 live days times 832 kg of exposure accumulated between November 2013 and March 2015. When we assume Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter elastically scattering on the target nuclei, the exclusion upper limit of the WIMP-nucleon cross section 4.3$\times$10$^{-41}$cm$^2$ at 8 GeV/c$^2$ was obtained and we exclude almost all the DAMA/LIBRA allowed region in the 6 to 16 GeV/c$^2$ range at $\sim$10$^{-40}$cm$^2$. The result of a simple modulation analysis, without assuming any specific dark matter model but including electron/$γ$ events, showed a slight negative amplitude. The $p$-values obtained with two independent analyses are 0.014 and 0.068 for null hypothesis, respectively. we obtained 90\% C.L. upper bounds that can be used to test various models. This is the first extensive annual modulation search probing this region with an exposure comparable to DAMA/LIBRA.

Effects of realistic tensor force on nuclear quadrupole deformation around the shore of the island of inversion

The M3Y-type semi-realistic interaction is applied to deformed nuclei for the first time. The constrained Hartree-Fock calculations assuming axial symmetry are implemented for the $N=20$ isotones $^{30}$Ne, $^{32}$Mg, $^{34}$Si and the $N=28$ isotones $^{40}$Mg, $^{42}$Si, $^{44}$S with the M3Y-P6 interaction. The results match the experimental data well. Effects of the realistic tensor force on the nuclear quadrupole deformation are investigated in relation to the loss of the $N=20$ and $28$ magic numbers. The tensor force is confirmed to favor the deformation for the $N=28$ nuclei owing to the closure of the $jj$-shell (\textit{i.e.}, $n0f_{7/2}$), while favoring the sphericity for the $N=20$ nuclei owing to the $\ell s$-closure of $N=20$.

Enhancement of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and its electric field-induced change through interface engineering in Cr/Fe/MgO

Recently, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and its voltage control (VC) was demonstrated for Cr/Fe/MgO (Physical Review Applied 5, 044006 (2016)). In this study, we shed a light on the origin of large voltage-induced anisotropy change in Cr/Fe/MgO. Analysis of the chemical structure of Cr/Fe/MgO revealed the existence of Cr atoms in the proximity of the Fe/MgO interface, which can affect both magnetic anisotropy (MA) and its VC. We showed that PMA and its VC can be enhanced by controlled Cr doping at the Fe/MgO interface. For Cr/Fe (5.9 Å)/Cr (0.7 Å)/MgO with an effective PMA of 0.8 MJ/m3, a maximum value of the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) effect of 370 fJ/Vm was demonstrated.

Measurement of double-differential muon neutrino charged-current interactions on C$_8$H$_8$ without pions in the final state using the T2K off-axis beam

We report the measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon without pions in the final state at the T2K beam energy using 5.734$\times10^{20}$ protons on target. For the first time the measurement is reported as a flux-integrated, double-differential cross-section in muon kinematic variables ($\cosθ_μ$, $p_μ$), without correcting for events where a pion is produced and then absorbed by final state interactions. Two analyses are performed with different selections, background evaluations and cross-section extraction methods to demonstrate the robustness of the results against biases due to model-dependent assumptions. The measurements compare favorably with recent models which include nucleon-nucleon correlations but, given the present precision, the measurement does not solve the degeneracy between different models. The data also agree with Monte Carlo simulations which use effective parameters that are tuned to external data to describe the nuclear effects. The total cross-section in the full phase space is $σ= (0.417 \pm 0.047 \text{(syst)} \pm 0.005 \text{(stat)})\times 10^{-38} \text{cm}^2$ $\text{nucleon}^{-1}$ and the cross-section integrated in the region of phase space with largest efficiency and best signal-over-background ratio ($\cosθ_μ>0.6$ and $p_μ> 200$ MeV) is $σ= (0.202 \pm 0.0359 \text{(syst)} \pm 0.0026 \text{(stat)}) \times 10^{-38} \text{cm}^2$ $\text{nucleon}^{-1}$.

Measurement of Muon Antineutrino Oscillations with an Accelerator-Produced Off-Axis Beam

T2K reports its first measurements of the parameters governing the disappearance of $\barν_μ$ in an off-axis beam due to flavor change induced by neutrino oscillations. The quasimonochromatic $\barν_μ$ beam, produced with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV at J-PARC, is observed at the far detector Super-Kamiokande, 295 km away, where the $\barν_μ$ survival probability is expected to be minimal. Using a dataset corresponding to $4.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target, $34$ fully contained $μ$-like events were observed. The best-fit oscillation parameters are $\sin^2 (\barθ_{23}) = 0.45$ and $|Δ\bar{m}^2_{32}| = 2.51 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ with 68% confidence intervals of 0.38 - 0.64 and 2.26 - 2.80 $\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ respectively. These results are in agreement with existing antineutrino parameter measurements and also with the $ν_μ$ disappearance parameters measured by T2K.

Measurements of the atmospheric neutrino flux by Super-Kamiokande: energy spectra, geomagnetic effects, and solar modulation

A comprehensive study on the atmospheric neutrino flux in the energy region from sub-GeV up to several TeV using the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov detector is presented in this paper. The energy and azimuthal spectra of the atmospheric $ν_e+{\barν}_e$ and $ν_μ+{\barν}_μ$ fluxes are measured. The energy spectra are obtained using an iterative unfolding method by combining various event topologies with differing energy responses. The azimuthal spectra depending on energy and zenith angle, and their modulation by geomagnetic effects, are also studied. A predicted east-west asymmetry is observed in both the $ν_e$ and $ν_μ$ samples at 8.0 σ and 6.0 σ significance, respectively, and an indication that the asymmetry dipole angle changes depending on the zenith angle was seen at the 2.2 σ level. The measured energy and azimuthal spectra are consistent with the current flux models within the estimated systematic uncertainties. A study of the long-term correlation between the atmospheric neutrino flux and the solar magnetic activity cycle is also performed, and a weak indication of a correlation was seen at the 1.1 σ level, using SK I-IV data spanning a 20 year period. For particularly strong solar activity periods known as Forbush decreases, no theoretical prediction is available, but a deviation below the typical neutrino event rate is seen at the 2.4 σ level.

Quark-Pauli effects in three octet-baryons

To sustain a neutron star with about two times the solar mass, multi baryons including hyperons are expected to produce repulsive effects in the interior of its high baryon-density region. To examine possible quark-Pauli repulsion among the baryons, we solve the eigenvalue problem of the quark antisymmetrizer for three octet-baryons that are described by most compact spatial configurations. We find that the Pauli blocking effect is weak in the $Λnn$ system, while it is strong in the $Σ^-nn$ system. We report the results from a search in Super-Kamiokande for neutrino signals coincident with the first detected gravitational wave events, GW150914 and GW151226, using a neutrino energy range from 3.5 MeV to 100 PeV. We searched for coincident neutrino events within a time window of $\pm$500 seconds around the gravitational wave detection time. Four neutrino candidates are found for GW150914 and no candidates are found for GW151226. The remaining neutrino candidates are consistent with the expected background events. We calculated the 90\% confidence level upper limits on the combined neutrino fluence for both gravitational wave events, which depends on event energy and topologies. Considering the upward going muon data set (1.6 GeV - 100 PeV) the neutrino fluence limit for each gravitational wave event is 14 - 37 (19 - 50) cm$^{-2}$ for muon neutrinos (muon antineutrinos), depending on the zenith angle of the event. In the other data sets, the combined fluence limits for both gravitational wave events range from 2.4$\times 10^{4}$ to 7.0$\times 10^{9}$ cm$^{-2}$.

A search for two-neutrino double electron capture on $^{124}$Xe is performed using 165.9 days of data collected with the XMASS-I liquid xenon detector. No significant excess above background was observed and we set a lower limit on the half-life as $4.7 \times 10^{21}$ years at 90% confidence level. One of the main goals of Hyper-Kamiokande is the study of $CP$ asymmetry in the lepton sector using accelerator neutrino and anti-neutrino beams. In this document, the physics potential of a long baseline neutrino experiment using the Hyper-Kamiokande detector and a neutrino beam from the J-PARC proton synchrotron is presented. The analysis has been updated from the previous Letter of Intent [K. Abe et al., arXiv:1109.3262 [hep-ex]], based on the experience gained from the ongoing T2K experiment. When performing both these searches we assume that the sterile mass splitting is large, allowing $\sin^2(Δm^2 L/4E)$ to be approximated as $0.5$, and we assume that there is no mixing between electron neutrinos and sterile neutrinos ($|U_{e4}|^2 = 0$). No evidence of sterile oscillations is seen and we limit $|U_{\mu4}|^2$ to less than 0.041 and $|U_{\tau4}|^2$ to less than 0.18 for $Δm^2 > 0.8$ eV$^2$ at the 90% C.L. in a 3+1 framework. The approximations that can be made with atmospheric neutrinos allow these limits to be easily applied to 3+N models, and we provide our results in a generic format to allow comparisons with other sterile neutrino models.

Measurement and comparison of individual external doses of high-school students living in Japan, France, Poland and Belarus -- the "D-shuttle" project --

Twelve high schools in Japan (of which six are in Fukushima Prefecture), four in France, eight in Poland and two in Belarus cooperated in the measurement and comparison of individual external doses in 2014. In total 216 high-school students and teachers participated in the study. Each participant wore an electronic personal dosimeter "D-shuttle" for two weeks, and kept a journal of his/her whereabouts and activities. The distributions of annual external doses estimated for each region overlap with each other, demonstrating that the personal external individual doses in locations where residence is currently allowed in Fukushima Prefecture and in Belarus are well within the range of estimated annual doses due to the background radiation level of other regions/countries.

Measurement of the $ν_μ$ CCQE cross section on carbon with the ND280 detector at T2K

The Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic (CCQE) interaction, $ν_{l} + n \rightarrow l^{-} + p$, is the dominant CC process at $E_ν\sim 1$ GeV and contributes to the signal in accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments operating at intermediate neutrino energies. This paper reports a measurement by the T2K experiment of the $ν_μ$ CCQE cross section on a carbon target with the off-axis detector based on the observed distribution of muon momentum ($p_μ$) and angle with respect to the incident neutrino beam ($θ_μ$). The flux-integrated CCQE cross section was measured to be $(0.83 \pm 0.12) \times 10^{-38}\textrm{ cm}^{2}$ in good agreement with NEUT MC value of ${0.88 \times 10^{-38}} \textrm{ cm}^{2}$. The energy dependence of the CCQE cross section is also reported. The axial mass, $M_A^{QE}$, of the dipole axial form factor was extracted assuming the Smith-Moniz CCQE model with a relativistic Fermi gas nuclear model. Using the absolute (shape-only) $p_μcosθ_μ$ distribution, the effective $M_A^{QE}$ parameter was measured to be ${1.26^{+0.21}_{-0.18} \textrm{ GeV}/c^{2}}$ (${1.43^{+0.28}_{-0.22} \textrm{ GeV}/c^{2}}$).

Measurement of the $ν_μ$ charged current quasi-elastic cross-section on carbon with the T2K on-axis neutrino beam

We report a measurement of the $ν_μ$ charged current quasi-elastic cross-sections on carbon in the T2K on-axis neutrino beam. The measured charged current quasi-elastic cross-sections on carbon at mean neutrino energies of 1.94 GeV and 0.93 GeV are $(11.95\pm 0.19(stat.)_{-1.47}^{+1.82} (syst.))\times 10^{-39}\mathrm{cm}^2/\mathrm{neutron}$ and $(10.64\pm 0.37(stat.)_{-1.65}^{+2.03} (syst.))\times 10^{-39}\mathrm{cm}^2/\mathrm{neutron}$, respectively. These results agree well with the predictions of neutrino interaction models. In addition, we investigated the effects of the nuclear model and the multi-nucleon interaction.

Measurement of the Electron Neutrino Charged-current Interaction Rate on Water with the T2K ND280 pi-zero Detector

This paper presents a measurement of the charged current interaction rate of the electron neutrino beam component of the beam above $1.5$~GeV using the large fiducial mass of the T2K $π^0$ detector. The predominant poriton of the $ν_e$ flux ($\sim$85 %) at these energies comes from kaon decays. The measured ratio of the observed beam interaction rate to the predicted rate in the detector with water targets filled is 0.89 $\pm$ 0.08 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.11 (sys.), and with the water targets emptied is 0.90 $\pm$ 0.09 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.13 (sys.). The ratio obtained for the interactions on water only from an event subtraction method is 0.87 $\pm$ 0.33 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.21 (sys.). This is the first measurement of the interaction rate of electron neutrinos on water, which is particularly of interest to experiments with water Cherenkov detectors.

Measurement of the muon neutrino inclusive charged-current cross section in the energy range of 1-3 GeV with the T2K INGRID detector

We report a measurement of the $ν_μ$-nucleus inclusive charged current cross section (=$σ^{cc}$) on iron using data from exposed to the J-PARC neutrino beam. The detector consists of 14 modules in total, which are spread over a range of off-axis angles from 0$^\circ$ to 1.1$^\circ$. The variation in the neutrino energy spectrum as a function of the off-axis angle, combined with event topology information, is used to calculate this cross section as a function of neutrino energy. The cross section is measured to be $σ^{cc}(1.1\text{ GeV}) = 1.10 \pm 0.15$ $(10^{-38}\text{cm}^2/\text{nucleon})$, $σ^{cc}(2.0\text{ GeV}) = 2.07 \pm 0.27$ $(10^{-38}\text{cm}^2/\text{nucleon})$, and $σ^{cc}(3.3\text{ GeV}) = 2.29 \pm 0.45$ $(10^{-38}\text{cm}^2/\text{nucleon})$, at energies of 1.1, 2.0, and 3.3 GeV, respectively. These results are consistent with the cross section calculated by the neutrino interaction generators currently used by T2K. More importantly, the method described here opens up a new way to determine the energy dependence of neutrino-nucleus cross sections.

Measurements of neutrino oscillation in appearance and disappearance channels by the T2K experiment with 6.6E20 protons on target

We report on measurements of neutrino oscillation using data from the T2K long-baseline neutrino experiment collected between 2010 and 2013. In an analysis of muon neutrino disappearance alone, we find the following estimates and 68% confidence intervals for the two possible mass hierarchies: Normal Hierarchy: $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.514^{+0.055}_{-0.056}$ and $Δm^2_{32}=(2.51\pm0.10)\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$/c$^4$ Inverted Hierarchy: $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.511\pm0.055$ and $Δm^2_{13}=(2.48\pm0.10)\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$/c$^4$ The analysis accounts for multi-nucleon mechanisms in neutrino interactions which were found to introduce negligible bias. We describe our first analyses that combine measurements of muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance to estimate four oscillation parameters and the mass hierarchy. Frequentist and Bayesian intervals are presented for combinations of these parameters, with and without including recent reactor measurements. At 90% confidence level and including reactor measurements, we exclude the region: $δ_{CP}=[0.15,0.83]π$ for normal hierarchy and $δ_{CP}=[-0.08,1.09]π$ for inverted hierarchy. The T2K and reactor data weakly favor the normal hierarchy with a Bayes Factor of 2.2. The most probable values and 68% 1D credible intervals for the other oscillation parameters, when reactor data are included, are: $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.528^{+0.055}_{-0.038}$ and $|Δm^2_{32}|=(2.51\pm0.11)\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$/c$^4$.

Momentum-dependent sign-inversion of orbital polarization in superconducting FeSe

We investigate the electronic reconstruction across the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural transition in FeSe by employing polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on detwinned single crystals. Across the structural transition, the electronic structures around the G and M points are modified from four-fold to two-fold symmetry due to the lifting of degeneracy in dxz/dyz orbitals. The dxz band shifts upward at the G point while it moves downward at the M point, suggesting that the electronic structure of orthorhombic FeSe is characterized by a momentum-dependent sign-changing orbital polarization. The elongated directions of the elliptical Fermi surfaces (FSs) at the G and M points are rotated by 90 degrees with respect to each other, which may be related to the absence of the antiferromagnetic order in FeSe.

Neutrino Oscillation Physics Potential of the T2K Experiment

The observation of the recent electron neutrino appearance in a muon neutrino beam and the high-precision measurement of the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ have led to a re-evaluation of the physics potential of the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Sensitivities are explored for CP violation in neutrinos, non-maximal $\sin^22θ_{23}$, the octant of $θ_{23}$, and the mass hierarchy, in addition to the measurements of $δ_{CP}$, $\sin^2θ_{23}$, and $Δm^2_{32}$, for various combinations of $ν$-mode and \(\barν\)-mode data-taking. With an exposure of $7.8\times10^{21}$~protons-on-target, T2K can achieve 1-$σ$ resolution of 0.050(0.054) on $\sin^2θ_{23}$ and $0.040(0.045)\times10^{-3}~\rm{eV}^2$ on $Δm^2_{32}$ for 100\%(50\%) neutrino beam mode running assuming $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.5$ and $Δm^2_{32} = 2.4\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$. T2K will have sensitivity to the CP-violating phase $δ_{\rm{CP}}$ at 90\% C.L. or better over a significant range. For example, if $\sin^22θ_{23}$ is maximal (i.e $θ_{23}$=$45^\circ$) the range is $-115^\circ<δ_{\rm{CP}}<-60^\circ$ for normal hierarchy and $+50^\circ<δ_{\rm{CP}}<+130^\circ$ for inverted hierarchy. When T2K data is combined with data from the NO$ν$A experiment, the region of oscillation parameter space where there is sensitivity to observe a non-zero $δ_{CP}$ is substantially increased compared to if each experiment is analyzed alone.

Physics Potential of a Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiment Using J-PARC Neutrino Beam and Hyper-Kamiokande

Hyper-Kamiokande will be a next generation underground water Cherenkov detector with a total (fiducial) mass of 0.99 (0.56) million metric tons, approximately 20 (25) times larger than that of Super-Kamiokande. One of the main goals of Hyper-Kamiokande is the study of $CP$ asymmetry in the lepton sector using accelerator neutrino and anti-neutrino beams. In this paper, the physics potential of a long baseline neutrino experiment using the Hyper-Kamiokande detector and a neutrino beam from the J-PARC proton synchrotron is presented. The analysis uses the framework and systematic uncertainties derived from the ongoing T2K experiment. With a total exposure of 7.5 MW $\times$ 10$^7$ sec integrated proton beam power (corresponding to $1.56\times10^{22}$ protons on target with a 30 GeV proton beam) to a $2.5$-degree off-axis neutrino beam, it is expected that the leptonic $CP$ phase $δ_{CP}$ can be determined to better than 19 degrees for all possible values of $δ_{CP}$, and $CP$ violation can be established with a statistical significance of more than $3\,σ$ ($5\,σ$) for $76\%$ ($58\%$) of the $δ_{CP}$ parameter space. Using both $ν_e$ appearance and $ν_μ$ disappearance data, the expected 1$σ$ uncertainty of $\sin^2θ_{23}$ is 0.015(0.006) for $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.5(0.45)$.

Search for dinucleon decay into pions at Super-Kamiokande

A search for dinucleon decay into pions with the Super-Kamiokande detector has been performed with an exposure of 282.1 kiloton-years. Dinucleon decay is a process that violates baryon number by two units. We present the first search for dinucleon decay to pions in a large water Cherenkov detector. The modes $^{16}$O$(pp) \rightarrow$ $^{14}$C$π^{+}π^{+}$, $^{16}$O$(pn) \rightarrow$ $^{14}$N$π^{+}π^{0}$, and $^{16}$O$(nn) \rightarrow$ $^{14}$O$π^{0}π^{0}$ are investigated. No significant excess in the Super-Kamiokande data has been found, so a lower limit on the lifetime of the process per oxygen nucleus is determined. These limits are: $τ_{pp\rightarrowπ^{+}π^{+}} > 7.22 \times 10^{31}$ years, $τ_{pn\rightarrowπ^{+}π^{0}} > 1.70 \times 10^{32}$ years, and $τ_{nn\rightarrowπ^{0}π^{0}} > 4.04 \times 10^{32}$ years. The lower limits on each mode are about two orders of magnitude better than previous limits from searches for dinucleon decay in iron.

Search for n-nbar oscillation in Super-Kamiokande

A search for neutron-antineutron ($n-\bar{n}$) oscillation was undertaken in Super-Kamiokande using the 1489 live-day or $2.45 \times 10^{34}$ neutron-year exposure data. This process violates both baryon and baryon minus lepton numbers by an absolute value of two units and is predicted by a large class of hypothetical models where the seesaw mechanism is incorporated to explain the observed tiny neutrino masses and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. No evidence for $n-\bar{n}$ oscillation was found, the lower limit of the lifetime for neutrons bound in ${}^{16}$O, in an analysis that included all of the significant sources of experimental uncertainties, was determined to be $1.9 \times 10^{32}$~years at the 90\% confidence level. The corresponding lower limit for the oscillation time of free neutrons was calculated to be $2.7 \times 10^8$~s using a theoretical value of the nuclear suppression factor of $0.517 \times 10^{23}$~s$^{-1}$ and its uncertainty.

Search for neutrinos from annihilation of captured low-mass dark matter particles in the Sun by Super-Kamiokande

Super-Kamiokande (SK) can search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) by detecting neutrinos produced from WIMP annihilations occurring inside the Sun. In this analysis, we include neutrino events with interaction vertices in the detector in addition to upward-going muons produced in the surrounding rock. Compared to the previous result, which used the upward-going muons only, the signal acceptances for light (few-GeV/$c^2$ $\sim$ 200-GeV/$c^2$) WIMPs are significantly increased. We fit 3903 days of SK data to search for the contribution of neutrinos from WIMP annihilation in the Sun. We found no significant excess over expected atmospheric-neutrino background and the result is interpreted in terms of upper limits on WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering cross sections under different assumptions about the annihilation channel. We set the current best limits on the spin-dependent (SD) WIMP-proton cross section for WIMP masses below 200 GeV/$c^2$ (at 10 GeV/$c^2$, 1.49$\times 10^{-39}$ cm$^2$ for $χχ\rightarrow b \bar{b}$ and 1.31$\times 10^{-40}$ cm$^2$ for $χχ\rightarrowτ^+τ^-$ annihilation channels), also ruling out some fraction of WIMP candidates with spin-independent (SI) coupling in the few-GeV/$c^2$ mass range.

Search for Nucleon and Dinucleon Decays with an Invisible Particle and a Charged Lepton in the Final State at the Super-Kamiokande Experiment

Search results for nucleon decays $p \rightarrow e^+X$, $p \rightarrow μ^+X$, $n \rightarrow νγ$ (where $X$ is an invisible, massless particle) as well as dinucleon decays $np \rightarrow e^+ν$, $np \rightarrow μ^+ν$ and $np \rightarrow τ^+ν$ in the Super-Kamiokande experiment are presented. Using single-ring data from an exposure of 273.4 kton $\cdot$ years, a search for these decays yields a result consistent with no signal. Accordingly, lower limits on the partial lifetimes of $τ_{p \rightarrow e^+X} > 7.9 \times 10^{32}$ years, $τ_{p \rightarrow μ^+X} > 4.1 \times 10^{32}$ years, $τ_{n \rightarrow νγ} > 5.5 \times 10^{32}$ years, $τ_{np \rightarrow e^+ν} > 2.6 \times 10^{32}$ years, $τ_{np \rightarrow μ^+ν} > 2.2 \times 10^{32}$ years and $τ_{np \rightarrow τ^+ν} > 2.9 \times 10^{31}$ years at a $90 \% $ confidence level are obtained. Test of Lorentz invariance with atmospheric neutrinos

A search for neutrino oscillations induced by Lorentz violation has been performed using 4,438 live-days of Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino data. The Lorentz violation is included in addition to standard three-flavor oscillations using the non-perturbative Standard Model Extension (SME), allowing the use of the full range of neutrino path lengths, ranging from 15 to 12,800 km, and energies ranging from 100 MeV to more than 100 TeV in the search. No evidence of Lorentz violation was observed, so limits are set on the renormalizable isotropic SME coefficients in the $eμ$, $μτ$, and $eτ$ sectors, improving the existing limits by up to seven orders of magnitude and setting limits for the first time in the neutrino $μτ$ sector of the SME.

Correlated-basis description of $α$-cluster and delocalized $0^+$ states in $^{16}$O

A five-body calculation of $^{12}$C+$n$+$n$+$p$+$p$ is performed to take a step towards solving an outstanding problem in nuclear theory: The simultaneous and accurate description of the ground and first excited 0$^+$ states of $^{16}$O. The interactions between the constituent particles are chosen consistently with the energies of bound subsystems, especially $^{12}$C$+n$, $^{12}$C$+p$, and $α$-particle. The five-body dynamics is solved with the stochastic variational method on correlated Gaussian basis functions. No restriction is imposed on the four-nucleon configurations except the Pauli principle excluding the occupied orbits in $^{12}$C. The energies of both the ground and first excited states of $^{16}$O are obtained in excellent agreement with experiment. Analysis of the wave functions indicates spatially localized $α$-particle-like cluster structure for the excited state and shell-model-like delocalized structure for the ground state.

Electric dipole response of $^6$He: Halo-neutron and core excitations

Electric dipole ($E1$) response of $^{6}$He is studied with a fully microscopic six-body calculation. The wave functions for the ground and excited states are expressed as a superposition of explicitly correlated Gaussians (CG). Final state interactions of three-body decay channels are explicitly taken into account. The ground state properties and the low-energy $E1$ strength are obtained consistently with observations. Two main peaks as well as several small peaks are found in the $E1$ strength function. The peak at the high-energy region indicates a typical macroscopic picture of the giant dipole resonance, the out-of-phase proton-neutron motion. The transition densities of the lower-lying peaks exhibit in-phase proton-neutron motion in the internal region, out-of-phase motion near the surface region, and spatially extended neutron oscillation, indicating a soft-dipole mode (SDM) and its vibrationally excited mode.

First Indication of Terrestrial Matter Effects on Solar Neutrino Oscillation

We report an indication that the elastic scattering rate of solar $^8$B neutrinos with electrons in the Super-Kamiokande detector is larger when the neutrinos pass through the Earth during nighttime. We determine the day/night asymmetry, defined as the difference of the average day rate and average night rate divided by the average of those two rates, to be $(-3.2\pm1.1(\text{stat})\pm0.5(\text{syst}))\%$, which deviates from zero by 2.7 $σ$. Since the elastic scattering process is mostly sensitive to electron-flavored solar neutrinos, a non-zero day/night asymmetry implies that the flavor oscillations of solar neutrinos are affected by the presence of matter within the neutrinos' flight path. Super-Kamiokande's day/night asymmetry is consistent with neutrino oscillations for $4\times10^{-5}$eV$^2\leqΔm^2_{21}\leq7\times10^{-5}$eV$^2$ and large mixing values of $θ_{12}$, at the $68\%$ C.L.

Harmonic-oscillator excitations of precise few-body wave functions

A method for calculating the occupation probability of the number of harmonic oscillator (HO) quanta is developed for a precise few-body wave function obtained in a correlated Gaussian basis. The probability distributions of two- to four-nucleon wave functions obtained using different nucleon- nucleon (NN) interactions are analyzed to gain insight into the characteristic behavior of the various interactions. Tensor correlations as well as short-range correlations play a crucial role in enhancing the probability of high HO excitations. For the excited states of 4He, the interaction dependence is much less because high HO quanta are mainly responsible for describing the relative motion function between the 3N+N (3H+p and 3He+n) clusters.

Influence of Topological Edge States on the Properties of Al/Bi2Se3/Al Hybrid Josephson Devices

In superconductor-topological insulator-superconductor hybrid junctions, the barrier edge states are expected to be protected against backscattering, to generate unconventional proximity effects, and, possibly, to signal the presence of Majorana fermions. The standards of proximity modes for these types of structures have to be settled for a neat identification of possible new entities. Through a systematic and complete set of measurements of the Josephson properties we find evidence of ballistic transport in coplanar Al-Bi2Se3-Al junctions that we attribute to a coherent transport through the topological edge state. The shunting effect of the bulk only influences the normal transport. This behavior, which can be considered to some extent universal, is fairly independent of the specific features of superconducting electrodes. A comparative study of Shubnikov - de Haas oscillations and Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy gave an experimental signature compatible with a two dimensional electron transport channel with a Dirac dispersion relation. A reduction of the size of the Bi2Se3 flakes to the nanoscale is an unavoidable step to drive Josephson junctions in the proper regime to detect possible distinctive features of Majorana fermions.

Lifting of xz/yz orbital degeneracy at the structural transition in detwinned FeSe

We study superconducting FeSe (Tc = 9 K) exhibiting the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural transition (Ts = 90 K) without any antiferromagnetic ordering, by utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In the detwinned orthorhombic state, the energy position of the dyz orbital band at the Brillouin zone corner is 50 meV higher than that of dxz, indicating the orbital order similar to NaFeAs and BaFe2As2 families. Evidence of orbital order also appears in the hole bands at the Brillouin zone center. Precisely measured temperature dependence using strain-free samples shows that the onset of the orbital ordering (To) occurs very close to Ts, thus suggesting that the electronic nematicity above Ts is considerably weaker in FeSe compared to BaFe2As2 family.

Mean-field analysis of ground state and low-lying electric dipole strength in $^{22}$C

Properties of neutron-rich $^{22}$C are studied using the mean-field approach with Skyrme energy density functionals. Its weak binding and large total reaction cross section, which are suggested by recent experiments, are simulated by modifying the central part of Skyrme potential. Calculating $E1$ strength distribution by using the random-phase approximation, we investigate developments of low-lying electric dipole ($E1$) strength and a contribution of core excitations of $^{20}$C. As the neutron Fermi level approaches the zero energy threshold ($\varepsilon_F >\sim -1$ MeV), we find that the low-lying $E1$ strength exceeds the energy-weighted cluster sum rule, which indicates an importance of the core excitations with the $1d_{5/2}$ orbit.

Measurement of the intrinsic electron neutrino component in the T2K neutrino beam with the ND280 detector

The T2K experiment has reported the first observation of the appearance of electron neutrinos in a muon neutrino beam. The main and irreducible background to the appearance signal comes from the presence in the neutrino beam of a small intrinsic component of electron neutrinos originating from muon and kaon decays. In T2K, this component is expected to represent 1.2% of the total neutrino flux. A measurement of this component using the near detector (ND280), located 280 m from the target, is presented. The charged current interactions of electron neutrinos are selected by combining the particle identification capabilities of both the time projection chambers and electromagnetic calorimeters of ND280. The measured ratio between the observed electron neutrino beam component and the prediction is 1.01+-0.10 providing a direct confirmation of the neutrino fluxes and neutrino cross section modeling used for T2K neutrino oscillation analyses. Electron neutrinos coming from muons and kaons decay are also separately measured, resulting in a ratio with respect to the prediction of 0.68+-0.30 and 1.10+-0.14, respectively.

Measurement of the neutrino-oxygen neutral-current interaction cross section by observing nuclear deexcitation $γ$ rays

We report the first measurement of the neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic (NCQE) cross section. It is obtained by observing nuclear deexcitation $γ$-rays which follow neutrino-oxygen interactions at the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov detector. We use T2K data corresponding to $3.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. By selecting only events during the T2K beam window and with well-reconstructed vertices in the fiducial volume, the large background rate from natural radioactivity is dramatically reduced. We observe 43 events in the $4-30$ MeV reconstructed energy window, compared with an expectation of 51.0, which includes an estimated 16.2 background events. The background is primarily nonquasielastic neutral-current interactions and has only 1.2 events from natural radioactivity. The flux-averaged NCQE cross section we measure is $1.55 \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ with a 68\% confidence interval of $(1.22, 2.20) \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ at a median neutrino energy of 630 MeV, compared with the theoretical prediction of $2.01 \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$.

Precise Measurement of the Neutrino Mixing Parameter θ_{23} from Muon Neutrino Disappearance in an Off-axis Beam

New data from the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment produce the most precise measurement of the neutrino mixing parameter theta_{23}. Using an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV and a data set corresponding to 6.57 x 10^{20} protons on target, T2K has fit the energy-dependent nu_mu oscillation probability to determine oscillation parameters. Marginalizing over the values of other oscillation parameters yields sin^2 (theta_{23}) = 0.514 +0.055/-0.056 (0.511 +- 0.055), assuming normal (inverted) mass hierarchy. The best-fit mass-squared splitting for normal hierarchy is Delta m^2_{32} = (2.51 +- 0.10) x 10^{-3} eV^2/c^4 (inverted hierarchy: Delta m^2_{13} = (2.48 +- 0.10) x 10^{-3} eV^2/c^4). Adding a model of multinucleon interactions that affect neutrino energy reconstruction is found to produce only small biases in neutrino oscillation parameter extraction at current levels of statistical uncertainty.

The cross sections are calculated in the Glauber theory using the density distributions obtained with the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method in 3-dimensional coordinate space. Defining a reaction radius, $a_R=\sqrt{σ_R/π}$, to characterize the nuclear size and target (proton or $^{12}$C) dependence, we find an empirical formula for expressing $a_R$ with the point matter radius and the skin thickness, and assess two practical ways of determining the skin thickness from proton-nucleus $σ_R$ values measured at different energies or from $σ_R$ values measured for different targets.

Search for bosonic superweakly interacting massive dark matter particles with the XMASS-I detector

Bosonic superweakly interacting massive particles (super-WIMPs) are a candidate for warm dark matter. With the absorption of such a boson by a xenon atom these dark matter candidates would deposit an energy equivalent to their rest mass in the detector. This is the first direct detection experiment exploring the vector super-WIMPs in the mass range between 40 and 120 keV. Using 165.9 days of data no significant excess above background was observed in the fiducial mass of 41 kg. The present limit for the vector super-WIMPs excludes the possibility that such particles constitute all of dark matter. The absence of a signal also provides the most stringent direct constraint on the coupling constant of pseudoscalar super-WIMPs to electrons. The unprecedented sensitivity was achieved exploiting the low background at a level $10^{-4}$ kg$^{-1}$keV$_{ee}^{-1}$day$^{-1}$ in the detector.

Search for inelastic WIMP nucleus scattering on $^{129}$Xe in data from the XMASS-I experiment

A search for inelastic scattering of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) on the isotope $^{129}$Xe was done in data taken with the single phase liquid xenon detector XMASS at the Kamioka Observatory. Using a restricted volume containing 41 kg of LXe at the very center of our detector we observed no significant excess of events in 165.9 days of data. Our background reduction allowed us to derive our limits without explicitly subtracting the remaining events which are compatible with background expectations and derive for e.g. a 50 GeV WIMP an upper limit for its inelastic cross section on $^{129}$Xe nuclei of 3.2 pb at the 90% confidence level.

Search for Trilepton Nucleon Decay via $p \rightarrow e^+ νν$ and $p \rightarrow μ^+ νν$ in the Super-Kamiokande Experiment

The trilepton nucleon decay modes $p \rightarrow e^+ νν$ and $p \rightarrow μ^+ νν$ violate $|Δ(B - L)|$ by two units. Using data from a 273.4 kiloton year exposure of Super-Kamiokande a search for these decays yields a fit consistent with no signal. Accordingly, lower limits on the partial lifetimes of $τ_{p \rightarrow e^+ νν} > 1.7 \times 10^{32}$ years and $τ_{p \rightarrow μ^+ νν} > 2.2 \times 10^{32}$ years at a $90 \% $ confidence level are obtained. These limits can constrain Grand Unified Theories which allow for such processes.

Barrier penetration effects in the triple-alpha reaction at low energies

We investigate the triple-alpha reaction at low energies, by assuming a direct process. The Coulomb potential of three $α$ particles is examined carefully. The three-body continuum wave functions are generated by calculating an adiabatic potential barrier. We discuss the influence of the $αα$ potential, and compare our reaction rates with the literature. The reaction rate at $T=0.01$\,GK is about 10$^3$ times larger than that of NACRE.

Calibration of the Super-Kamiokande Detector

Procedures and results on hardware level detector calibration in Super-Kamiokande (SK) are presented in this paper. In particular, we report improvements made in our calibration methods for the experimental phase IV in which new readout electronics have been operating since 2008. The topics are separated into two parts. The first part describes the determination of constants needed to interpret the digitized output of our electronics so that we can obtain physical numbers such as photon counts and their arrival times for each photomultiplier tube (PMT). In this context, we developed an in-situ procedure to determine high-voltage settings for PMTs in large detectors like SK, as well as a new method for measuring PMT quantum efficiency and gain in such a detector. The second part describes the modeling of the detector in our Monte Carlo simulation, including in particular the optical properties of its water target and their variability over time. Detailed studies on the water quality are also presented. As a result of this work, we achieved a precision sufficient for physics analysis over a wide energy range (from a few MeV to above a TeV). For example, the charge determination was understood at the 1% level, and the timing resolution was 2.1 nsec at the one-photoelectron charge level and 0.5 nsec at the 100-photoelectron charge level.

Interfacial Ferromagnetism in LaNiO3/CaMnO3 Superlattices

We observe interfacial ferromagnetism in superlattices of the paramagnetic metal LaNiO3 and the antiferromagnetic insulator CaMnO3. LaNiO3 exhibits a thickness dependent metal-insulator transition and we find the emergence of ferromagnetism to be coincident with the conducting state of LaNiO3. That is, only superlattices in which the LaNiO3 layers are metallic exhibit ferromagnetism. Using several magnetic probes, we have determined that the ferromagnetism arises in a single unit cell of CaMnO3 at the interface. Together these results suggest that ferromagnetism can be attributed to a double exchange interaction among Mn ions mediated by the adjacent itinerant metal.

Measurement of Neutrino Oscillation Parameters from Muon Neutrino Disappearance with an Off-axis Beam

The T2K collaboration reports a precision measurement of muon neutrino disappearance with an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. Near detector measurements are used to constrain the neutrino flux and cross section parameters. The Super-Kamiokande far detector, which is 295 km downstream of the neutrino production target, collected data corresponding to $3.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. In the absence of neutrino oscillations, $205 \pm 17$ (syst.) events are expected to be detected and only 58 muon neutrino event candidates are observed. A fit to the neutrino rate and energy spectrum assuming three neutrino flavors, normal mass hierarchy and $θ_{23}\leq π/4$ yields a best-fit mixing angle $\sin^2(2θ_{23})=1.000$ and mass splitting $|Δm^2_{32}| =2.44 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$/c$^4$. If $θ_{23}\geq π/4$ is assumed, the best-fit mixing angle changes to $\sin^2(2θ_{23})=0.999$ and the mass splitting remains unchanged.

Measurement of the Inclusive NuMu Charged Current Cross Section on Carbon in the Near Detector of the T2K Experiment

T2K has performed the first measurement of νμ inclusive charged current interactions on carbon at neutrino energies of ~1 GeV where the measurement is reported as a flux-averaged double differential cross section in muon momentum and angle. The flux is predicted by the beam Monte Carlo and external data, including the results from the NA61/SHINE experiment. The data used for this measurement were taken in 2010 and 2011, with a total of 10.8 x 10^{19} protons-on-target. The analysis is performed on 4485 inclusive charged current interaction candidates selected in the most upstream fine-grained scintillator detector of the near detector. The flux-averaged total cross section is <σ_CC>_ϕ=(6.91 +/- 0.13 (stat) +/- 0.84 (syst)) x10^{-39} cm^2/nucleon for a mean neutrino energy of 0.85 GeV.

Spin-dipole strength functions of $^4$He with realistic nuclear forces

Both isoscalar and isovector spin-dipole excitations of $^4$He are studied using realistic nuclear forces in the complex scaling method. The ground state of $^4$He and discretized continuum states with $J^π=0^-, 1^-, 2^-$ for A=4 nuclei are described in explicitly correlated Gaussians reinforced with global vectors for angular motion. Two- and three-body decay channels are specifically treated to take into account final state interactions. The observed resonance energies and widths of the negative-parity levels are all in fair agreement with those calculated from both the spin-dipole and electric-dipole strength functions as well as the energy eigenvalues of the complex scaled Hamiltonian. Spin-dipole sum rules, both non energy-weighted and energy-weighted, are discussed in relation to tensor correlations in the ground state of $^4$He.

The T2K Neutrino Flux Prediction

The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment studies neutrino oscillations using an off-axis muon neutrino beam with a peak energy of about 0.6 GeV that originates at the J-PARC accelerator facility. Interactions of the neutrinos are observed at near detectors placed at 280 m from the production target and at the far detector -- Super-Kamiokande (SK) -- located 295 km away. The flux prediction is an essential part of the successful prediction of neutrino interaction rates at the T2K detectors and is an important input to T2K neutrino oscillation and cross section measurements. A FLUKA and GEANT3 based simulation models the physical processes involved in the neutrino production, from the interaction of primary beam protons in the T2K target, to the decay of hadrons and muons that produce neutrinos. The simulation uses proton beam monitor measurements as inputs. The modeling of hadronic interactions is re-weighted using thin target hadron production data, including recent charged pion and kaon measurements from the NA61/SHINE experiment. For the first T2K analyses the uncertainties on the flux prediction are evaluated to be below 15% near the flux peak. The uncertainty on the ratio of the flux predictions at the far and near detectors is less than 2% near the flux peak.

Ab initio study of the photoabsorption of $^4$He

There are some discrepancies in the low energy data on the photoabsorption cross section of $^4$He. We calculate the cross section with realistic nuclear forces and explicitly correlated Gaussian functions. Final state interactions and two- and three-body decay channels are taken into account. The cross section is evaluated in two methods: With the complex scaling method the total absorption cross section is obtained up to the rest energy of a pion, and with the microscopic $R$-matrix method both cross sections $^4$He($γ, p$)$^3$H and $^4$He($γ, n$)$^3$He are calculated below 40\,MeV. Both methods give virtually the same result. The cross section rises sharply from the $^3$H+$p$ threshold, reaching a giant resonance peak at 26--27\,MeV. Our calculation reproduces almost all the data above 30\,MeV. We stress the importance of $^3$H+$p$ and $^3$He+$n$ cluster configurations on the cross section as well as the effect of the one-pion exchange potential on the photonuclear sum rule.

We present the result of an indirect search for high energy neutrinos from WIMP annihilation in the Sun using upward-going muon (upmu) events at Super-Kamiokande. Datasets from SKI-SKIII (3109.6 days) were used for the analysis. We looked for an excess of neutrino signal from the Sun as compared with the expected atmospheric neutrino background in three upmu categories: stopping, non-showering, and showering. No significant excess was observed. The 90% C.L. upper limits of upward-going muon flux induced by WIMPs of 100 GeV/c$^2$ were 6.4$\times10^{-15}$ cm$^{-2}$ sec$^{-1}$ and 4.0$\times10^{-15}$ cm$^{-2}$ sec$^{-1}$ for the soft and hard annihilation channels, respectively. These limits correspond to upper limits of 4.5$\times10^{-39}$ cm$^{-2}$ and 2.7$\times10^{-40}$ cm$^{-2}$ for spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross sections in the soft and hard annihilation channels, respectively.

Glauber-model analysis of total reaction cross sections for Ne, Mg, Si, and S isotopes with Skyrme-Hartree-Fock densities

A systematic analysis is made on the total reaction cross sections for Ne, Mg, Si, and S isotopes. The high-energy nucleus-nucleus collision is described based on the Glauber model. Using the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method in the three-dimensional grid-space representation, we determine the nuclear density distribution for a wide range of nuclei self-consistently without assuming any spatial symmetry. The calculated total reaction cross sections consistently agree with the recent cross section data on Ne$+^{12}$C collision at 240$A$\,MeV, which makes it possible to discuss the radius and deformation of the isotopes. The total reaction cross sections for Mg$+^{12}$C, Si$+^{12}$C and S$+^{12}$C cases are predicted for future measurements. We also find that the high-energy cross section data for O, Ne, and Mg isotopes on a $^{12}$C target at around 1000\,$A$MeV can not be reproduced consistently with the corresponding data at 240\,$A$MeV.

Search for GUT Monopoles at Super-Kamiokande

GUT monopoles captured by the Sun's gravitation are expected to catalyze proton decays via the Callan-Rubakov process. In this scenario, protons, which initially decay into pions, will ultimately produce ν_{e}, ν_μ and \barν_μ. After undergoing neutrino oscillation, all neutrino species appear when they arrive at the Earth, and can be detected by a 50,000 metric ton water Cherenkov detector, Super-Kamiokande (SK). A search for low energy neutrinos in the electron total energy range from 19 to 55 MeV was carried out with SK and gives a monopole flux limit of F_M(σ_0/1 mb) < 6.3 \times 10^{-24} (β_M/10^{-3})^2 cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} at 90% C.L., where β_M is the monopole velocity in units of the speed of light and σ_0 is the catalysis cross section at β_M=1. The obtained limit is more than eight orders of magnitude more stringent than the current best cosmic-ray supermassive monopole flux limit, F_M < 1 \times 10^{-15} cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} for β_M < 10^{-3} and also two orders of magnitude lower than the result of the Kamiokande experiment, which used a similar detection method.

Searches for a nucleon decay into a charged anti-lepton (e^+ or μ^+) plus a light meson (π^0, π^-, η, ρ^0, ρ^-, ω) were performed using the Super-Kamiokande I and II data. Twelve nucleon decay modes were searched for. Solar neutrino results in Super-Kamiokande-III

The results of the third phase of the Super-Kamiokande solar neutrino measurement are presented and compared to the first and second phase results. With improved detector calibrations, a full detector simulation, and improved analysis methods, the systematic uncertainty on the total neutrino flux is estimated to be ?2.1%, which is about two thirds of the systematic uncertainty for the first phase of Super-Kamiokande. The observed 8B solar flux in the 5.0 to 20 MeV total electron energy region is 2.32+/-0.04 (stat.)+/-0.05 (sys.) *10^6 cm^-2sec^-1, in agreement with previous measurements. A combined oscillation analysis is carried out using SK-I, II, and III data, and the results are also combined with the results of other solar neutrino experiments. The best-fit oscillation parameters are obtained to be sin^2 θ12 = 0.30+0.02-0.01(tan^2 θ12 = 0.42+0.04 -0.02) and Δm2_21 = 6.2+1.1-1.9 *10^-5eV^2. Combined with KamLAND results, the best-fit oscillation parameters are found to be sin^2 θ12 = 0.31+/-0.01(tan^2 θ12 = 0.44+/-0.03) and Δm2_21 = 7.6?0.2*10^-5eV^2 . The 8B neutrino flux obtained from global solar neutrino experiments is 5.3+/-0.2(stat.+sys.)*10^6cm^-2s^-1, while the 8B flux becomes 5.1+/-0.1(stat.+sys.)*10^6cm^-2s^-1 by adding KamLAND result. In a three-flavor analysis combining all solar neutrino experiments, the upper limit of sin^2 θ13 is 0.060 at 95% C.L.. Four-nucleon scattering with a correlated Gaussian basis method

Elastic-scattering phase shifts for four-nucleon systems are studied in an $ab$-$initio$ type cluster model in order to clarify the role of the tensor force and to investigate cluster distortions in low energy $d+d$ and $t+p$ scattering. In the present method, the description of the cluster wave function is extended from a simple (0$s$) harmonic-oscillator shell model to a few-body model with a realistic interaction, in which the wave function of the subsystems are determined with the Stochastic Variational Method. In order to calculate the matrix elements of the four-body system, we have developed a Triple Global Vector Representation method for the correlated Gaussian basis functions. To compare effects of the cluster distortion with realistic and effective interactions, we employ the AV8$^{\prime}$ potential as a realistic interaction and the Minnesota potential as an effective interaction. Especially for $^1S_0$, the calculated phase shifts show that the $t+p$ and $h+n$ channels are strongly coupled to the $d+d$ channel for the case of the realistic interaction. On the contrary, the coupling of these channels plays a relatively minor role for the case of the effective interaction. This difference between both potentials originates from the tensor term in the realistic interaction. Furthermore, the tensor interaction makes the energy splitting of the negative parity states of $^4$He consistent with experiments. No such splitting is however reproduced with the effective interaction.

Whereas an effect of spin drift is not ignorable to bias- and temperature-dependence of spin signals in non-metallic systems except for the case of a non-local 4-terminal method, it is not fully conclusive how the spin drift affects spin transport properties in highly-doped Si in a non-local 3-terminal method that is often used in Si spintronics. Here, we report on temperature dependence of spin diffusion length in the Si, and it is clarified that the spin transport is less affected by an external electric field.

R&D Status of Nuclear Emulsion For Directional Dark Matter Search

The readout of submicron tracks was required the new technology. We developed the expansion technique, and could readout the signal by shape analysis with optical microscopy. The two dimensional angular resolution is 36 degrees at the original track length of range from 150nm to 200nm with optical microscopy. Finally we demonstrated by using recoiled nuclei induced by 14.8MeV neutron, and confirmed the technique. Moreover, we developed the X-ray microscope system with SPring-8 as final check with higher resolution of selected candidate tracks with optical microscopy. The angular resolution was improved from 31 degrees with optical microscopy to 17degrees with X-ray microscopy at the track length of range from 150nm to 250nm. Scintillation-only Based Pulse Shape Discrimination for Nuclear and Electron Recoils in Liquid Xenon

In a dedicated test setup at the Kamioka Observatory we studied pulse shape discrimination (PSD) in liquid xenon (LXe) for dark matter searches. PSD in LXe was based on the observation that scintillation light from electron events was emitted over a longer period of time than that of nuclear recoil events, and our method used a simple ratio of early to total scintillation light emission in a single scintillation event. Requiring an efficiency of 50% for nuclear recoil retention we reduced the electron background to 7.7\pm1.1(stat)\pm1.2 0.6(sys)\times10-2 at energies between 4.8 and 7.2 keVee and to 7.7\pm2.8(stat)\pm2.5 2.8(sys)\times10-3 at energies between 9.6 and 12 keVee for a scintillation light yield of 20.9 p.e./keV. Further study was done by masking some of that light to reduce this yield to 4.6 p.e./keV, the same method results in an electron event reduction of 2.4\pm0.2(stat)\pm0.3 0.2(sys)\times10-1 for the lower of the energy regions above. We also observe that in contrast to nuclear recoils the fluctuations in our early to total ratio for electron events are larger than expected from statistical fluctuations.

We obtain a limit on the FCNC coupling parameter, varepsilon_{mu tau}, |varepsilon_{mu tau}|<1.1 x 10^{-2} at 90%C.L. and various constraints on other FCNC parameters as a function of the NU coupling, varepsilon_{e e}. These spin filter junctions have relied on the weak magnetic coupling between one ferromagnetic electrode and a barrier layer or the insertion of a nonmagnetic insulating layer in between the spin filter barrier and electrode. We have demonstrated spin filtering behavior in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/chromite/Fe3O4 junctions without nonmagnetic spacer layers where the interface anisotropy plays a significant role in determining transport behavior. Detailed studies of chemical and magnetic structure at the interfaces indicate that abrupt changes in magnetic anisotropy across the non-isostructural interface is the cause of the significant suppression of junction magnetoresistance in junctions with MnCr2O4 barrier layers.

Universality of short-range nucleon-nucleon correlations

Short-range correlations between nucleon pairs in different spin-isospin channels are investigated for light nuclei using the Argonne V8' interaction. At distances below 1 fm a universal behavior is found for the deuteron, 3H, 3He and for ground and first excited states in 4He. This behavior in coordinate space is reflected by a universal behavior for the high-momentum components in momentum space. The universality indicates that a pairwise renormalization is possible in order to obtain a universal effective two-body interaction that does not scatter to high momentum states. The exact two-body densities are compared with those obtained using the unitary correlation operator method with simple trial wave functions. The effect of three-body correlations due to the tensor force on the two-body densities is discussed.

Atmospheric neutrino oscillation analysis with sub-leading effects in Super-Kamiokande I, II, and III

We present a search for non-zero theta_{13} and deviations of sin^2 theta_{23} from 0.5 in the oscillations of atmospheric neutrino data from Super-Kamiokande -I, -II, and -III. No distortions of the neutrino flux consistent with non-zero theta_{13} are found and both neutrino mass hierarchy hypotheses are in agreement with the data. The data are best fit at Delta m^2 = 2.1 x 10^-3 eV^2, sin^2 theta_{13} = 0.0, and sin^2 theta_{23} =0.5. In the normal (inverted) hierarchy theta_{13} and Delta m^2 are constrained at the one-dimensional 90% C.L. to sin^2 theta_{13} < 0.04 (0.09) and 1.9 (1.7) x 10^-3 < Delta m^2 < 2.6 (2.7) x 10^-3 eV^2. The atmospheric mixing angle is within 0.407 <= sin^2 theta_{23} <= 0.583 at 90% C.L.

Green's function method for strength function in three-body continuum

Practical methods to compute dipole strengths for a three-body system by using a discretized continuum are analyzed. New techniques involving Green's function are developed, either by correcting the tail of the approximate wave function in a direct calculation of the strength function or by using a solution of a driven Schroedinger equation in a summed expression of the strength. They are compared with the complex scaling method and the Lorentz integral transform, also making use of a discretized continuum. Numerical tests are performed with a hyperscalar three-body potential in the hyperspherical-harmonics formalism. They show that the Lorentz integral transform method is less practical than the other methods because of a difficult inverse transform. These other methods provide in general comparable accuracies.

High-dispersion spectroscopic monitoring of the Be/X-ray binary A0535+26/V725 Tau I: The long-term profile variability

We report on optical high-dispersion spectroscopic monitoring observations of the Be/X-ray binary A0535+26/V725 Tau, carried out from November 2005 to March 2009. The main aim of these monitoring observations is to study spectral variabilities in the Be disc, on both the short (a week or so) and long (more than hundreds of days) timescales, by taking long-term frequent observations. Our four-year spectroscopic observations indicate that the V/R ratio, i.e., the relative intensity of the violet (V) peak to the red (R) one, of the double-peaked H-alpha line profile varies with a period of 500 days. The H-beta line profile also varies in phase with the H-alpha profile. With these observations covering two full cycles of the V/R variability, we reconstruct the 2-D structure of the Be disc by applying the Doppler tomography method to the H-alpha and H-beta emission line profiles, using a rigidly rotating frame with the V/R variability period. The resulting disc structure reveals non-axisymmetric features, which can be explained by a one-armed perturbation in the Be disc. It is the first time that an eccentric disc structure is directly detected by using a method other than the interferometric one.

Probing the weakly-bound neutron orbit of $^{31}$Ne with total reaction and one-neutron removal cross sections

A candidate of a neutron-halo nucleus, $^{31}$Ne, contains a single neutron in the $pf$ shell. Within the Glauber and eikonal models, we analyze reactions used to study $^{31}$Ne. We show in a $^{30}$Ne+n model that the magnitudes of the total reaction and above all of the one-neutron removal cross sections of $^{31}$Ne on $^{12}$C and $^{208}$Pb targets strongly depend on the orbital angular momentum of the neutron, thereby providing us with efficient ways to determine both the spin-parity and structure of the ground state of $^{31}$Ne. Besides these inclusive observables, we also calculate energy and parallel-momentum distributions for the breakup of $^{31}$Ne, and show their strong dependence upon the orbital of the valence neutron in the bound state of $^{31}$Ne.

Temperature dependence of spin diffusion length in silicon by Hanle-type spin precession

The Hanle-type spin precession method was carried out associated with non-local magnetoresistance measurement using a highly doped (5\times10^19) silicon channel. The spin diffusion length obtained by the Hanle-method is in good agreement with that by the gap dependence of non-local signals. We have evaluated the interface and bulk channel effects separately, and it was demonstrated that the major source of temperature dependence of non-local signals originates from the spin polarization reduction at interface between the tunnel barrier and silicon.

Self-shielding effect of a single phase liquid xenon detector for direct dark matter search

Liquid xenon is a suitable material for a dark matter search. For future large scale experiments, single phase detectors are attractive due to their simple configuration and scalability. However, in order to reduce backgrounds, they need to fully rely on liquid xenon's self-shielding property. A prototype detector was developed at Kamioka Observatory to establish vertex and energy reconstruction methods and to demonstrate the self-shielding power against gamma rays from outside of the detector. Sufficient self-shielding power for future experiments was obtained.

A microscopic cluster model study of $^3$He+$p$ scatterings

We calculate $^3$He+$p$ scattering phase shifts in two different microscopic cluster models, Model T and Model C, in order to show the effects of tensor force as well as $D$-wave components in the cluster wave function. Model T employs a realistic nucleon-nucleon potential and includes the $D$-wave, whereas Model C employs an effective potential in which the tensor-force effect is considered to be renormalized into the central force and includes only the $S$-wave for the cluster intrinsic motion. The $S$- and $P$-wave elastic scattering phase shifts are obtained in the \{$^3$He+$p$\}+\{$d$ + 2$p$\} coupled-channels calculation. In Model T, the $d$ + 2$p$ channel plays a significant role in producing the $P$-wave resonant phase shifts but hardly affects the $S$-wave non-resonant phase shifts. In Model C, however, the effect of the $d$ + 2$p$ channel is suppressed in both of the $S$- and $P$-wave phase shifts, suggesting that it is renormalized mostly as the $^3$He(1/2$^+$)+$p$ channel in the resonance region.

Phase-shift calculation using continuum-discretized states

We present a method for calculating scattering phase shifts which utilizes continuum-discretized states obtained in a bound-state type calculation. The wrong asymptotic behavior of the discretized state is remedied by means of the Green's function formalism. Test examples confirm the accuracy of the method. The $α+n$ scattering is described using realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials. The $3/2^-$ and $1/2^-$ phase shifts obtained in a single-channel calculation are too small in comparison with experiment. The $1/2^+$ phase shifts are in reasonable agreement with experiment, and gain contributions both from the tensor and central components of the nucleon-nucleon potential.

Hydrogen patterning of Ga1-xMnxAs for planar spintronics

We demonstrate two patterning techniques based on hydrogen passivation of Ga1-xMnxAs to produce isolated ferromagnetically active regions embedded uniformly in a paramagnetic, insulating host. The first method consists of selective hydrogenation of Ga1-xMnxAs by lithographic masking. Magnetotransport measurements of Hall-bars made in this manner display the characteristic properties of the hole-mediated ferromagnetic phase, which result from good pattern isolation. Arrays of Ga1-xMnxAs dots as small as 250 nm across have been realized by this process. The second process consists of blanket hydrogenation of Ga1-xMnxAs followed by local reactivation using confined low-power pulsed-laser annealing. Conductance imaging reveals local electrical reactivation of micrometer-sized regions that accompanies the restoration of ferromagnetism. The spatial resolution achievable with this method can potentially reach <100 nm by employing near-field laser processing. The high spatial resolution attainable by hydrogenation patterning enables the development of systems with novel functionalities such as lateral spin-injection as well as the exploration of magnetization dynamics in individual and coupled structures made from this novel class of semiconductors.

Reaction cross sections of carbon isotopes incident on a proton

We systematically study total reaction cross sections of carbon isotopes with N=6-16 on a proton target for wide range of incident energies, putting an emphasis on the difference from the case of a carbon target. The analysis includes the reaction cross sections of ^{19,20,22}C at 40 AMeV, the data of which have recently been measured at RIKEN. The Glauber theory is used to calculate the reaction cross sections. To describe the intrinsic structure of the carbon isotopes, we use a Slater determinant generated from a phenomenological mean-field potential, and construct the density distributions. To go beyond the simple mean-field model, we adopt two types of dynamical models: One is a core+n model for odd-neutron nuclei, and the other is a core+n+n model for 16C and 22C. We propose empirical formulas which are useful in predicting unknown cross sections.

Microscopic Calculation of Spin Torques and Forces

Spin torques, that is, effects of conduction electrons on magnetization dynamics, are calculated microscopically in the first order in spatial gradient and time derivative of magnetization. Special attention is paid to the so-called β-term and the Gilbert damping, α, in the presence of electrons' spin-relaxation processes, which are modeled by quenched magnetic impurities. Two types of forces that the electric/spin current exerts on magnetization are identified based on a general formula relating the force to the torque.

Structure of and E2 transition in $^{16}$C in a $^{14}$C+n+n model

A three-body model of $^{14}$C+n+n is applied to study the energy spectrum and the hindered $E$2 transition in $^{16}$C. A realistic two-nucleon potential is used for the valence neutrons. Both spin singlet and triplet components for the neutrons are taken into account. The three-body problem with a Pauli constraint is solved in a stochastic variational method. For the n-$^{14}$C potential chosen to reproduce the properties of $^{15}$C, the low-lying energy spectrum agrees reasonably well with experiment, but the ground state is predicted to be about 1 MeV high. The calculated $B(E2$; $2_1^+ \to 0^+_1)$ value is about twice the measured value if the polarization charge of the valence neutrons is taken to be the same as that required to fit the $^{15}$C data. The correlated motion of the valence neutrons is displayed through the two-neutron density distribution.

Systematic analysis of reaction cross sections of carbon isotopes

We systematically analyze total reaction cross sections of carbon isotopes with N=6--16 on a $^{12}$C target for wide range of incident energy. The intrinsic structure of the carbon isotope is described by a Slater determinant generated from a phenomenological mean-field potential, which reasonably well reproduces the ground state properties for most of the even $N$ isotopes. We need separate studies not only for odd nuclei but also for $^{16}$C and $^{22}$C. The density of the carbon isotope is constructed by eliminating the effect of the center of mass motion. For the calculations of the cross sections, we take two schemes: one is the Glauber approximation, and the other is the eikonal model using a global optical potential. We find that both of the schemes successfully reproduce low and high incident energy data on the cross sections of $^{12}$C, $^{13}$C and $^{16}$C on $^{12}$C. The calculated reaction cross sections of $^{15}$C are found to be considerably smaller than the empirical values observed at low energy. We find a consistent parameterization of the nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitude, differently from previous ones. Finally, we predict the total reaction cross section of $^{22}$C on $^{12}$C.

Multiple Time Scales in Diffraction Measurements of Diffusive Surface Relaxation

We grew SrTiO3 on SrTiO3 (001) by pulsed laser deposition, using x-ray scattering to monitor the growth in real time. The time-resolved small angle scattering exhibits a well-defined length scale associated with the spacing between unit cell high surface features. This length scale imposes a discrete spectrum of Fourier components and rate constants upon the diffusion equation solution, evident in multiple exponential relaxation of the "anti-Bragg" diffracted intensity. An Arrhenius analysis of measured rate constants confirms that they originate from a single activation energy.

Search for Dark Matter WIMPs using Upward Through-going Muons in Super-Kamiokande

We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments.

The optical potential of $^{6}$He in the eikonal approximation

The new data of the elastic scattering of $^{6}$He+$^{12}$C at about 40 MeV/nucleon are analyzed in the eikonal approximation. The $^{6}$He+$^{12}$C phase-shift function is evaluated completely without any {\it ad hoc} assumption by a Monte Carlo integration, which makes it possible to use a realistic 6-nucleon wave function for a halo nucleus $^{6}$He. A Realistic Description of Nucleon-Nucleon and Hyperon-Nucleon Interactions in the SU_6 Quark Model

We upgrade a SU_6 quark-model description for the nucleon-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon interactions by improving the effective meson-exchange potentials acting between quarks. For the scalar- and vector-meson exchanges, the momentum-dependent higher-order term is incorporated to reduce the attractive effect of the central interaction at higher energies. The single-particle potentials of the nucleon and Lambda, predicted by the G-matrix calculation, now have proper repulsive behavior in the momentum region q_1=5 - 20 fm^-1. A moderate contribution of the spin-orbit interaction from the scalar-meson exchange is also included. As to the vector mesons, a dominant contribution is the quadratic spin-orbit force generated from the rho-meson exchange. The nucleon-nucleon phase shifts at the non-relativistic energies up to T_lab=350 MeV are greatly improved especially for the 3E states. The low-energy observables of the nucleon-nucleon and the hyperon-nucleon interactions are also reexamined. The isospin symmetry breaking and the Coulomb effect are properly incorporated in the particle basis. The essential feature of the Lambda N - Sigma N coupling is qualitatively similar to that obtained from the previous models. The nuclear saturation properties and the single-particle potentials of the nucleon, Lambda and Sigma are reexamined through the G-matrix calculation. The single-particle potential of the Sigma hyperon is weakly repulsive in symmetric nuclear matter. The single-particle spin-orbit strength for the Lambda particle is very small, in comparison with that of the nucleons, due to the strong antisymmetric spin-orbit force generated from the Fermi-Breit interaction.

Benchmark Test Calculation of a Four-Nucleon Bound State

In the past, several efficient methods have been developed to solve the Schroedinger equation for four-nucleon bound states accurately. These are the Faddeev-Yakubovsky, the coupled-rearrangement-channel Gaussian-basis variational, the stochastic variational, the hyperspherical variational, the Green's function Monte Carlo, the no-core shell model and the effective interaction hyperspherical harmonic methods. In this article we compare the energy eigenvalue results and some wave function properties using the realistic AV8' NN interaction. The results of all schemes agree very well showing the high accuracy of our present ability to calculate the four-nucleon bound state.

Precise solution of few-body problems with the stochastic variational method

A precise variational solution to $N$=2--6-body problems is reported. The trial wave functions are chosen to be combinations of correlated Gaussians, which facilitate a fully analytical calculation of the matrix elements. The nonlinear parameters of the trial function are selected by a stochastic method. Fermionic and bosonic few-body systems are investigated for interactions of different type. A comparison of the results with those available in the literature shows that the method is both accurate and efficient.
