Femtoscopic study of coupled-channel $NΞ$ and $ΛΛ$ interactions

The momentum correlation functions of S = -2 baryon pairs (p Xi^- and Lambda Lambda) produced in high-energy pp and pA collisions are investigated on the basis of the coupled-channel formalism. The strong interaction is described by the coupled-channel HAL QCD potential obtained by the lattice QCD simulations near physical quark masses, while the hadronic source function is taken to be a static Gaussian form. The coupled-channel effect, the threshold difference, the realistic strong interaction, and the Coulomb interaction are fully taken into account for the first time in the femtoscopic analysis of baryon-baryon correlations. The characteristic features of the experimental data for the p Xi^- and Lambda Lambda pairs at LHC are reproduced quantitatively with a suitable choice of non-femtoscopic parameters and the source size. The agreement between theory and experiment indicates that the N Xi (Lambda Lambda) interaction is moderately (weakly) attractive without having a quasi-bound (bound) state.

Development of a Neutron Imaging Sensor using INTPIX4-SOI Pixelated Silicon Devices

We have developed a neutron imaging sensor based on an INTPIX4-SOI pixelated silicon device. Neutron irradiation tests are performed at several neutron facilities to investigate sensor's responses for neutrons. Detection efficiency is measured to be around $1.5$\% for thermal neutrons. Upper bound of spatial resolution is evaluated to be $4.1 \pm 0.2 ~μ$m in terms of a standard deviation of the line spread function.

Experimental Search for Non-Newtonian Forces in the Nanometer Scale with Slow Neutrons

Improved limits for new gravity-like short-range interactions, in which a scattering potential is modeled by the Yukawa-type parametrization, have been obtained by measuring the angular distribution of 6 Å neutrons scattering from atomic xenon gas. We have collected approximately $1.4 \times 10^8$ small-angle neutron scattering events. The data are interpreted as no evidence of new forces and show improved upper limits on the coupling strength in the interaction range of $0.3$ nm to $9$ nm. These improved constraints are also interpreted as new limits for a model, in which a charge of the new forces is expressed as a linear combination of the baryon number and the lepton number.

DHCAL with Minimal Absorber: Measurements with Positrons

In special tests, the active layers of the CALICE Digital Hadron Calorimeter prototype, the DHCAL, were exposed to low energy particle beams, without being interleaved by absorber plates. The thickness of each layer corresponded approximately to 0.29 radiation lengths or 0.034 nuclear interaction lengths, defined mostly by the copper and steel skins of the detector cassettes. This paper reports on measurements performed with this device in the Fermilab test beam with positrons in the energy range of 1 to 10 GeV. The measurements are compared to simulations based on GEANT4 and a standalone program to emulate the detailed response of the active elements.

Hadron shower decomposition in the highly granular CALICE analogue hadron calorimeter

The spatial development of hadronic showers in the CALICE scintillator-steel analogue hadron calorimeter is studied using test beam data collected at CERN and FNAL for single positive pions and protons with initial momenta in the range from 10 to 80 GeV/c. Both longitudinal and radial development of hadron showers are parametrised with two-component functions. The parametrisation is fit to test beam data and simulations using the QGSP_BERT and FTFP_BERT physics lists from Geant4 version 9.6. The parameters extracted from data and simulated samples are compared for the two types of hadrons. The response to pions and the ratio of the non-electromagnetic to the electromagnetic calorimeter response, h/e, are estimated using the extrapolation and decomposition of the longitudinal profiles.

Static and Dynamical Properties of the Spin-1/2 Equilateral Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$

We present single-crystal neutron scattering measurements of the spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$. Besides confirming that the Co$^{2+}$ magnetic moments lie in the ab plane for zero magnetic field, we determine all the exchange parameters of the minimal quasi-2D spin Hamiltonian, which confirms that Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ is an almost perfect realization of the paradigmatic model of frustrated quantum magnetism. A comparison with linear and nonlinear spin-wave theory reveals that quantum fluctuations induce a strong downward renormalization of the magnon dispersion.

Constraints on New Gravitylike Forces in the Nanometer Range

We report on a new constraint on gravitylike short-range forces, in which the interaction charge is mass, obtained by measuring the angular distribution of 5 A neutrons scattering off atomic xenon gas. Around 10^7 scattering events were collected at the 40 m small angle neutron scattering beam line located at the HANARO research reactor of the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute. The extracted coupling strengths of new forces in the Yukawa-type parametrization are g^2 = (0.2 \pm 6.8 \pm 2.0) \times 10^-15 GeV^2 and g^2 = (-5.3 \pm 9.0 + 2.7 -2.8) \times 10^-17 GeV^2 for interaction ranges of 0.1 and 1.0 nm, respectively. These strengths correspond to 95% confidence level limits of g^2 < (1.4 \pm 0.2) \times 10^-14 GeV^-2 and g^2 < (1.3 \pm 0.2) \times 10^-16 GeV^-2, improving the current limits for interaction ranges between 4 and 0.04 nm by a factor of up to 10.

Precision Measurement of the Position-space Wave Functions of Gravitationally Bound Ultracold Neutrons

Gravity is the most familiar force at our natural length scale. However, it is still exotic from the view point of particle physics. The first experimental study of quantum effects under gravity was performed using a cold neutron beam in 1975. Following this, an investigation of gravitationally bound quantum states using ultracold neutrons was started in 2002. This quantum bound system is now well understood, and one can use it as a tunable tool to probe gravity. In this paper, we review a recent measurement of position-space wave functions of such gravitationally bound states, and discuss issues related to this analysis, such as neutron loss models in a thin neutron guide, the formulation of phase space quantum mechanics, and UCN position sensitive detectors. The quantum modulation of neutron bound states measured in this experiment shows good agreement with the prediction from quantum mechanics.

Shower development of particles with momenta from 15 GeV to 150 GeV in the CALICE scintillator-tungsten hadronic calorimeter

We present a study of showers initiated by electrons, pions, kaons, and protons with momenta from 15 GeV to 150 GeV in the highly granular CALICE scintillator-tungsten analogue hadronic calorimeter. The data were recorded at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron in 2011. The analysis includes measurements of the calorimeter response to each particle type as well as measurements of the energy resolution and studies of the longitudinal and radial shower development for selected particles. The results are compared to Geant4 simulations (version 9.6.p02). In the study of the energy resolution we include previously published data with beam momenta from 1 GeV to 10 GeV recorded at the CERN Proton Synchrotron in 2010.

Multiferroicity with coexisting isotropic and anisotropic spins in Ca$_{3}$Co$_{2-x}$Mn$_{x}$O$_{6}$

We study magnetic and multiferroic behavior in Ca$_3$Co$_{2-x}$Mn$_{x}$O$_6$ ($x \sim$0.97) by high-field measurements of magnetization ($M$), magnetostriction ($L$($H$)/$L$), electric polarization ($P$), and magnetocaloric effect. This study also gives insight into the zero and low magnetic field magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms. We measured $M$ and $Δ$$L$/$L$ up to pulsed magnetic fields of 92 T, and determined the saturation moment and field. On the controversial topic of the spin states of Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ ions, we find evidence for $S$ = 3/2 spins for both ions with no magnetic field-induced spin-state crossovers. Our data also indicate that Mn$^{4+}$ spins are quasi-isotropic and develop components in the $ab$-plane in applied magnetic fields of 10 T. These spins cant until saturation at 85 T whereas the Ising Co$^{2+}$ spins saturate by 25 T. Furthermore, our results imply that mechanism for suppression of electric polarization with magnetic fields near 10 T is flopping of the Mn$^{4+}$ spins into the $ab$-plane, indicating that appropriate models must include the coexistence of Ising and quasi-isotropic spins.

Observation of the Spatial Distribution of Gravitationally Bound Quantum States of Ultracold Neutrons and Its Derivation Using the Wigner Function

Ultracold neutrons (UCNs) can be bound by the potential of terrestrial gravity and a reflecting mirror. The wave function of the bound state has characteristic modulations. We carried out an experiment to observe the vertical distribution of the UCNs above such a mirror at Institut Laue-Langevin in 2011. The observed modulation is in good agreement with that prediction by quantum mechanics using the Wigner function. The spatial resolution of the detector system is estimated to be 0.7 micro meter. This is the first observation of gravitationally bound states of UCNs with submicron spatial resolution.

Quantum phase diagram of the $S=1/2$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$

The magnetic phases of the ideal spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ are identified and studied using $^{135,137}$Ba nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in magnetic fields ranging to 30T, oriented parallel and near perpendicular to the crystallographic $ab$-plane. For both directions, the saturation field is approximately 33T. Notably, the NMR spectra provide microscopic evidence for the stabilization of an up-up-down spin configuration for in-plane fields, giving rise to an one-third magnetization plateau ($M_\text{sat}/3$), as well as for a higher field phase transition near to $\sim (3/5)M_\text{sat}$ for both field orientations. Phase transitions are signaled by the evolution of the NMR spectra, and in some cases through spin-lattice relaxation measurements. The results are compared with expectations obtained from a semi-classical energy density modeling, in which quantum effects are incorporated by effective interactions extracted from the spin-wave analysis of the two-dimensional model. The interlayer coupling also plays a significant role in the outcome. Good agreement between the model and the experimental results is achieved, except for the case of fields approaching the saturation value applied along the c-axis.

Formation of Magnetic Microphases in Ca$_3$Co$_2$O$_6$

We study a frustrated quantum Ising model relevant for Ca$_3$Co$_2$O$_6$ that consists of a triangular lattice of weakly-coupled ferromagnetic (FM) chains. According to our quantum Monte Carlo simulations, the chains become FM and form a three-sublattice "up-up-down" structure for $T \leq T_\text{CI}$. In contrast, long-period spin-density-wave (SDW) {\it microphases} are stabilized along the chains for $T_\text{CI} < T < T_c$. Our mean field solutions reveal a quasi-continuous temperature dependence of the SDW wavelength, implying the existence of metastable states that explain the very slow dynamics observed in Ca$_3$Co$_2$O$_6$. We also discuss implications of microphases for the related multiferroic compounds Ca$_3$CoMnO$_6$ and Lu$_2$MnCoO$_6$.

Multiferroic behavior in trimerized Mott insulators

We demonstrate multiferroic behavior in trimerized Mott insulators through interplay between spins and electric dipole moments resulting from electronic charge fluctuations in frustrated units. The model consists of stacked triangular layers of trimers with small intertrimer exchange interactions $J'$ and $J"$. Ferroelectric states coexist with ferro- or antiferromagnetic orderings depending on the value of the magnetic field $H$ and the sign of the interlayer exchange $J"$. The electric polarization undergoes abrupt changes as a function of $H$.

Present status and first results of the final focus beam line at the KEK Accelerator Test Facility

ATF2 is a final-focus test beam line which aims to focus the low emittance beam from the ATF damping ring to a vertical size of about 37 nm and to demonstrate nanometer level beam stability. Several advanced beam diagnostics and feedback tools are used. In December 2008, construction and installation were completed and beam commissioning started, supported by an international team of Asian, European, and U.S. scientists. The present status and first results are described.

Dimensional crossover in the quasi-two-dimensional Ising-O(3) model

We present results of our Monte Carlo simulation of the Ising-O(3) model on the two-dimensional (2D) and quasi-2D lattices. This model is an effective classical model for the stacked square-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model where the nearest neighbor ($J_1$) and next-nearest neighbor ($J_2$) couplings are frustrated and we assume that $J_2$ is dominant. We find an Ising ordered phase where the O(3) spins remain disordered in a moderate quasi-2D region. There is a single first order transition for a sufficiently large 3D coupling. Our results can provide a qualitative explanation on the experiments on ferropnictides, namely observed sequence and orders of the structural and magnetic transitions, in terms of the ratio between the inter-layer and intra-layer coupling.

Development of a Pixel Detector for Ultra-Cold Neutrons

A pixel detector with high spatial resolution and temporal information for ultra-cold neutrons is developed based on a commercial CCD on which a neutron converter is attached. 10B and 6Li are tested for the neutron converter and 10B is found to be more suitable based on efficiency and spatial resolution. The pixel detector has an efficiency of 44.1 +- 1.1% and a spatial resolution of 2.9 +- 0.1 um (1 sigma).

Shintake Monitor in ATF2: Performance Evaluation

The beam test for the Shintake monitor succeeded in measuring signal modulation with the laser interference fringe pattern in November 2009. We have studied the error sources, and evaluated the systematic error to be less than 30% for 1 minute measurements. This paper centers on the evaluation of the Shintake monitor performance through analyzing beam tests deta. Most systematic error sources are well understood, enabling accurate measurement of the beam size when it reaches 37 nm.
