Classifying and Addressing the Diversity of Errors in Retrieval-Augmented Generation Systems

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is a prevalent approach for building LLM-based question-answering systems that can take advantage of external knowledge databases. Due to the complexity of real-world RAG systems, there are many potential causes for erroneous outputs. Understanding the range of errors that can occur in practice is crucial for robust deployment. We present a new taxonomy of the error types that can occur in realistic RAG systems, examples of each, and practical advice for addressing them. Additionally, we curate a dataset of erroneous RAG responses annotated by error types. We then propose an auto-evaluation method aligned with our taxonomy that can be used in practice to track and address errors during development. Code and data are available at https://github.com/layer6ai-labs/rag-error-classification.

Automatic Generation of Product-Image Sequence in E-commerce

Product images are essential for providing desirable user experience in an e-commerce platform. For a platform with billions of products, it is extremely time-costly and labor-expensive to manually pick and organize qualified images. Furthermore, there are the numerous and complicated image rules that a product image needs to comply in order to be generated/selected. To address these challenges, in this paper, we present a new learning framework in order to achieve Automatic Generation of Product-Image Sequence (AGPIS) in e-commerce. To this end, we propose a Multi-modality Unified Image-sequence Classifier (MUIsC), which is able to simultaneously detect all categories of rule violations through learning. MUIsC leverages textual review feedback as the additional training target and utilizes product textual description to provide extra semantic information. Based on offline evaluations, we show that the proposed MUIsC significantly outperforms various baselines. Besides MUIsC, we also integrate some other important modules in the proposed framework, such as primary image selection, noncompliant content detection, and image deduplication. With all these modules, our framework works effectively and efficiently in JD.com recommendation platform. By Dec 2021, our AGPIS framework has generated high-standard images for about 1.5 million products and achieves 13.6% in reject rate.

E-LMC: Extended Linear Model of Coregionalization for Spatial Field Prediction

Physical simulations based on partial differential equations typically generate spatial fields results, which are utilized to calculate specific properties of a system for engineering design and optimization. Due to the intensive computational burden of the simulations, a surrogate model mapping the low-dimensional inputs to the spatial fields are commonly built based on a relatively small dataset. To resolve the challenge of predicting the whole spatial field, the popular linear model of coregionalization (LMC) can disentangle complicated correlations within the high-dimensional spatial field outputs and deliver accurate predictions. However, LMC fails if the spatial field cannot be well approximated by a linear combination of base functions with latent processes. In this paper, we present the Extended Linear Model of Coregionalization (E-LMC) by introducing an invertible neural network to linearize the highly complex and nonlinear spatial fields so that the LMC can easily generalize to nonlinear problems while preserving the traceability and scalability. Several real-world applications demonstrate that E-LMC can exploit spatial correlations effectively, showing a maximum improvement of about 40% over the original LMC and outperforming the other state-of-the-art spatial field models.

Scenario-based Multi-product Advertising Copywriting Generation for E-Commerce

In this paper, we proposed an automatic Scenario-based Multi-product Advertising Copywriting Generation system (SMPACG) for E-Commerce, which has been deployed on a leading Chinese e-commerce platform. The proposed SMPACG consists of two main components: 1) an automatic multi-product combination selection module, which itself is consisted of a topic prediction model, a pattern and attribute-based selection model and an arbitrator model; and 2) an automatic multi-product advertising copywriting generation module, which combines our proposed domain-specific pretrained language model and knowledge-based data enhancement model. The SMPACG is the first system that realizes automatic scenario-based multi-product advertising contents generation, which achieves significant improvements over other state-of-the-art methods. The SMPACG has been not only developed for directly serving for our e-commerce recommendation system, but also used as a real-time writing assistant tool for merchants.

Modulation of field-like spin orbit torque in heavy metal / ferromagnet heterostructure

Recent studies rediscovered the crucial role of field-like spin orbit torque (SOT) in nanosecond-timescale SOT dynamics. However, there is not yet an effective way to control its relative amplitude. Here, we experimentally modulate the field-like SOT in W/CoFeB/MgO trilayers through tuning the interfacial spin accumulation. By performing spin Hall magnetoresistance measurement, we find that the CoFeB with enhanced spin dephasing, either generated from larger layer thickness or from proper annealing, can distinctly boost the spin absorption and enhance the interfacial spin mixing conductance G_r. While the damping-like torque efficiency increases with G_r, the field-like torque efficiency turns out to decrease with it. The results suggest that the interfacial spin accumulation, which largely contributes to a field-like torque, is reduced by higher interfacial spin transparency. Our work shows a new path to further improve the performance of SOT-based magnetic devices.

Theoretical Conditions for Field-free Magnetization Switching Induced by Spin-orbit Torque and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

Recently, it was demonstrated that field-free switching could be achieved by combining spin-orbit torque (SOT) and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). However, this mechanism only occurs under certain conditions which have not been well discussed. In this letter, it is found that the ratio of domain wall width to diameter of nanodots could be utilized as a criteria for judging this mechanism. Influences of different magnetic parameters are studied, including exchange constant, DMI magnitude and field-like toque, etc. Besides, we reveal the importance of the shrinkage of magnetic domain wall surface energy for metastable states. Our work provides guidelines to the experiments on the DMI-induced field-free magnetization switching, and also offers a new way for the design of SOT-based memory or logic circuits.

Enhanced Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction in annealed Pt/Co/MgO structures

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI) is attracting great interests for spintronics. An iDMI constant larger than 3 mJ/m^2 is expected to minimize the size of skyrmions and to optimize the DW dynamics. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate an enhanced iDMI in Pt/Co/X/MgO ultra-thin film structures with perpendicular magnetization. The iDMI constants were measured using a field-driven creep regime domain expansion method. The enhancement of iDMI with an atomically thin insertion of Ta and Mg is comprehensively understood with the help of ab-initio calculations. Thermal annealing has been used to crystallize the MgO thin layer for improving tunneling magneto-resistance (TMR), but interestingly it also provides a further increase of the iDMI constant. An increase of the iDMI constant up to 3.3 mJ/m^2 is shown, which could be promising for the scaling down of skyrmion electronics.

Phase-Change Control of Interlayer Exchange Coupling

Changing the interlayer exchange coupling between magnetic layers in-situ is a key issue of spintronics, as it allows for the optimization of properties that are desirable for applications, including magnetic sensing and memory. In this paper, we utilize the phase change material VO2 as a spacer layer to regulate the interlayer exchange coupling between ferromagnetic layers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The successful growth of ultra-thin (several nanometres) VO2 films is realized by sputtering at room temperature, which further enables the fabrication of [Pt/Co]2/VO2/[Co/Pt]2 multilayers with distinct interfaces. Such a magnetic multilayer exhibits an evolution from antiferromagnetic coupling to ferromagnetic coupling as the VO2 undergoes a phase change. The underlying mechanism originates from the change in the electronic structure of the spacer layer from an insulating to a metallic state. As a demonstration of phase change spintronics, this work may reveal the great potential of material innovations for next-generation spintronics.

Monitoring method for neutron flux for a spallation target in an accelerator driven sub-critical system

In this paper, we study a monitoring method for neutron flux for the spallation target used in an accelerator driven sub-critical (ADS) system, where a spallation target located vertically at the centre of a sub-critical core is bombarded vertically by high-energy protons from an accelerator. First, by considering the characteristics in the spatial variation of neutron flux from the spallation target, we propose a multi-point measurement technique, i.e. the spallation neutron flux should be measured at multiple vertical locations. To explain why the flux should be measured at multiple locations, we have studied neutron production from a tungsten target bombarded by a 250 MeV-proton beam with Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation results indicate that the neutron flux at the central location is up to three orders of magnitude higher than the flux at lower locations. Secondly, we have developed an effective technique in order to measure the spallation neutron flux with a fission chamber (FC), by establishing the relation between the fission rate measured by FC and the spallation neutron flux. Since this relation is linear for a FC, a constant calibration factor is used to derive the neutron flux from the measured fission rate. This calibration factor can be extracted from the energy spectra of spallation neutrons. Finally, we have evaluated the proposed calibration method for a FC in the environment of an ADS system. The results indicate that the proposed method functions very well.

Perspectives of Racetrack Memory for Large-Capacity On-Chip Memory: From Device to System

Current-induced domain wall motion (CIDWM) is regarded as a promising way towards achieving emerging high-density, high-speed and low-power non-volatile devices. Racetrack memory is an attractive spintronic memory based on this phenomenon, which can store and transfer a series of data along a magnetic nanowire. However, storage capacity issue is always one of the most serious bottlenecks hindering its application for practical systems. This paper focuses on the potential of racetrack memory towards large capacity. The investigations covering from device level to system level have been carried out. Various alternative mechanisms to improve the capacity of racetrack memory have been proposed and elucidated, e.g. magnetic field assistance, chiral DW motion and voltage-controlled flexible DW pinning. All of them can increase nanowire length, allowing enhanced feasibility of large-capacity racetrack memory. By using SPICE compatible racetrack memory electrical model and commercial CMOS 28 nm design kit, mixed simulations are performed to validate their functionalities and analyze their performance. System level evaluations demonstrate the impact of capacity improvement on overall system. Compared with traditional SRAM based cache, racetrack memory based cache shows its advantages in terms of execution time and energy consumption.

Study of digital pulse shape discrimination method for n-γ separation of EJ-301 liquid scintillation detector

A digital pulse shape discrimination system based on a programmable module NI-5772 has been established and tested with EJ-301 liquid scintillation detector. The module was operated by means of running programs developed in LabVIEW with the sampling frequency up to 1.6GS/s. Standard gamma sources 22Na, 137Cs and 60Co were used to calibrate the EJ-301 liquid scintillation detector, and the gamma response function has been obtained. Digital algorithms for charge comparison method and zero-crossing method have been developed. The experimental results showed that both digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms could discriminate neutrons from gamma-rays. Moreover, the zero-crossing method shows better n-γ discrimination at 80 keVee and lower, whereas the charge comparison method gives better results at higher thresholds. In addition, the figure-of-merit (FOM) of two different dimension detectors were extracted at 9 energy thresholds, and it was found that the smaller one presented a better n-γ separation property for fission neutrons.

A Feature Subset Selection Algorithm Automatic Recommendation Method

Many feature subset selection (FSS) algorithms have been proposed, but not all of them are appropriate for a given feature selection problem. At the same time, so far there is rarely a good way to choose appropriate FSS algorithms for the problem at hand. Thus, FSS algorithm automatic recommendation is very important and practically useful. In this paper, a meta learning based FSS algorithm automatic recommendation method is presented. The proposed method first identifies the data sets that are most similar to the one at hand by the k-nearest neighbor classification algorithm, and the distances among these data sets are calculated based on the commonly-used data set characteristics. Then, it ranks all the candidate FSS algorithms according to their performance on these similar data sets, and chooses the algorithms with best performance as the appropriate ones. The performance of the candidate FSS algorithms is evaluated by a multi-criteria metric that takes into account not only the classification accuracy over the selected features, but also the runtime of feature selection and the number of selected features. The proposed recommendation method is extensively tested on 115 real world data sets with 22 well-known and frequently-used different FSS algorithms for five representative classifiers. The results show the effectiveness of our proposed FSS algorithm recommendation method.

The study of neutron spectra in water bath from Pb target irradiated by 250MeV/u protons

The spallation neutrons were produced by the irradiation of Pb with 250 MeV protons. The Pb target was surrounded by water which was used to slow down the emitted neutrons. The moderated neutrons in the water bath were measured by using the resonance detectors of Au, Mn and In with Cd cover. According to the measured activities of the foils, the neutron flux at different resonance energy were deduced and the epithermal neutron spectra were proposed. Corresponding results calculated with the Monte Carlo code MCNPX were compared with the experimental data to check the validity of the code.
