Approximation of Images via Generalized Higher Order Singular Value Decomposition over Finite-dimensional Commutative Semisimple Algebra

Low-rank approximation of images via singular value decomposition is well-received in the era of big data. However, singular value decomposition (SVD) is only for order-two data, i.e., matrices. It is necessary to flatten a higher order input into a matrix or break it into a series of order-two slices to tackle higher order data such as multispectral images and videos with the SVD. Higher order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) extends the SVD and can approximate higher order data using sums of a few rank-one components. We consider the problem of generalizing HOSVD over a finite dimensional commutative algebra. This algebra, referred to as a t-algebra, generalizes the field of complex numbers. The elements of the algebra, called t-scalars, are fix-sized arrays of complex numbers. One can generalize matrices and tensors over t-scalars and then extend many canonical matrix and tensor algorithms, including HOSVD, to obtain higher-performance versions. The generalization of HOSVD is called THOSVD. Its performance of approximating multi-way data can be further improved by an alternating algorithm. THOSVD also unifies a wide range of principal component analysis algorithms. To exploit the potential of generalized algorithms using t-scalars for approximating images, we use a pixel neighborhood strategy to convert each pixel to "deeper-order" t-scalar. Experiments on publicly available images show that the generalized algorithm over t-scalars, namely THOSVD, compares favorably with its canonical counterparts.

The influence of high-energy local orbitals and electron-phonon interactions on the band gaps and optical spectra of hexagonal boron nitride

We report $ab$ $initio$ band diagram and optical absorption spectra of hexagonal boron nitride ($h$-BN), focusing on unravelling how the completeness of basis set for $GW$ calculations and how electron-phonon interactions (EPIs) impact on them. The completeness of basis set, an issue which was seldom discussed in previous optical spectra calculations of $h$-BN, is found crucial in providing converged quasiparticle band gaps. In the comparison among three different codes, we demonstrate that by including high-energy local orbitals in the all-electron linearized augmented plane waves based $GW$ calculations, the quasiparticle direct and fundamental indirect band gaps are widened by $\sim$0.2 eV, giving values of 6.81 eV and 6.25 eV respectively at the $GW_0$ level. EPIs, on the other hand, reduce them to 6.62 eV and 6.03 eV respectively at 0 K, and 6.60 eV and 5.98 eV respectively at 300 K. With clamped crystal structure, the first peak of the absorption spectrum is at 6.07 eV, originating from the direct exciton contributed by electron transitions around $K$ in the Brillouin zone. After including the EPIs-renormalized quasiparticles in the Bethe-Salpeter equation, the exciton-phonon coupling shifts the first peak to 5.83 eV at 300 K, lower than the experimental value of $\sim$6.00 eV. This accuracy is acceptable to an $ab$ $initio$ description of excited states with no fitting parameter.

Quantitatively analyzing the mechanism of giant circular dichroism in extrinsic plasmonic chiral nanostructures by the interplay of electric and magnetic dipoles

The plasmonic chirality has drawn a lot of attention because of the tunable circular dichroism (CD) and the enhancement for the signal of chiral molecules. Different mechanisms have been proposed for explaining the plasmonic CD, however, a quantitative one like ab initio mechanism in chiral molecules is still unavailable. In this work, a mechanism similar to the chiral molecules is analyzed. The giant extrinsic circular dichroism of plasmonic splitting rectangle ring is quantitatively investigated theoretically. The interplay of electric and magnetic modes of the meta-structure is proposed to explain the giant CD. The interplay is analyzed both in an analytical coupled electric-magnetic dipoles model and finite element method model. The surface charge distributions show that the circular current yielded in the splitting rectangle ring makes it behave like a magneton at some resonant modes, which interact with electric modes and results in a mixing of the two kinds of modes. The strong interplay of the two kinds of modes is mainly responsible for the giant CD.The analysis of the chiral near field of the structure shows potential applications in chiral molecule sensing.

Generation and Electric Control of Spin-Coupled Valley Current in WSe2

The valley degree of freedom in layered transition-metal dichalcogenides (MX2) provides the opportunity to extend functionalities of novel spintronics and valleytronics devices. Due to spin splitting induced by spin-orbital coupling (SOC), the non-equilibrium charge carrier imbalance between two degenerate and inequivalent valleys to realize valley/spin polarization has been successfully demonstrated theoretically and supported by optical experiments. However, the generation of a valley/spin current by the valley polarization in MX2 remains elusive and a great challenge. Here, within an electric-double-layer transistor based on WSe2, we demonstrated a spin-coupled valley photocurrent whose direction and magnitude depend on the degree of circular polarization of the incident radiation and can be further greatly modulated with an external electric field. Such room temperature generation and electric control of valley/spin photocurrent provides a new property of electrons in MX2 systems, thereby enabling new degrees of control for quantum-confined spintronics devices.

Phase diagram of (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe: a bridge between iron selenide and arsenide superconductors

Previous experimental results have shown important differences between iron selenide and arsenide superconductors, which seem to suggest that the high temperature superconductivity in these two subgroups of iron-based family may arise from different electronic ground states. Here, we report the complete phase diagram of a newly synthesized superconducting (SC) system (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe with a similar structure to FeAs-based superconductors. In the non-SC samples, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin-density-wave (SDW) transition occurs at ~127 K. This is the first example to demonstrate such an SDW phase in FeSe-based superconductor system. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that a well-known sqrr(5) x sqrr(5) iron vacancy ordered state, resulting in an AFM order at ~ 500K in AyFe2-xSe2 (A = metal ions) superconductor system, is absent in both non-SC and SC samples, but a unique superstructure with a modulation wave vector q=1/2(1, 1, 0), identical to that seen in SC phase of KyFe2-xSe2, is dominant in the optimal SC sample (with an SC transition temperature Tc = 40 K). Hence, we conclude that the high-Tc superconductivity in (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe stems from the similarly weak AFM fluctuations as FeAs-based superconductors, suggesting a universal physical picture for both iron selenide and arsenide superconductors.
