Bridging Commutant and Polynomial Methods for Hilbert Space Fragmentation

A quantum model exhibits Hilbert space fragmentation (HSF) if its Hilbert space decomposes into exponentially many dynamically disconnected subspaces, known as Krylov subspaces. A model may however have different HSFs depending on the method for identifying them. Here we establish a connection between two vastly distinct methods recently proposed for identifying HSF: the commutant algebra (CA) method and integer characteristic polynomial factorization (ICPF) method. For a Hamiltonian consisting of operators admitting rational number matrix representations, we prove a theorem that, if its center of commutant algebra have all eigenvalues being rational, the HSF from the ICPF method must be equal to or finer than that from the CA method. We show that this condition is satisfied by most known models exhibiting HSF, for which we demonstrate the validity of our theorem. We further discuss representative models for which ICPF and CA methods yield different HSFs. Our results may facilitate the exploration of a unified definition of HSF.

Twistronics of Kekulé Graphene: Honeycomb and Kagome Flat Bands

Kekulé-O order in graphene, which has recently been realized experimentally, induces Dirac electron masses on the order of $m \sim 100 \text{meV}$. We show that twisted bilayer graphene in which one or both layers have Kekulé-O order exhibits nontrivial flat electronic bands on honeycomb and kagome lattices. When only one layer has Kekulé-O order, there is a parameter regime for which the lowest four bands at charge neutrality form an isolated two-orbital honeycomb lattice model with two flat bands. The bandwidths are minimal at a magic twist angle $θ\approx 0.7^\circ$ and Dirac mass $m \approx 100 \text{meV}$. When both layers have Kekulé-O order, there is a large parameter regime around $θ\approx 1^\circ$ and $m\gtrsim 100 \text{meV}$ in which the lowest three valence and conduction bands at charge neutrality each realize isolated kagome lattice models with one flat band, while the next three valence and conduction bands are flat bands on triangular lattices. These flat band systems may provide a new platform for strongly correlated phases of matter.

Chiral Sachdev-Ye model: Integrability and chaos of anyons in 1+1d

We construct and study a chiral Sachdev-Ye (SY) model consisting of $N$ chiral SU$(M)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) models with current-current interactions among each other, which generalizes the 0+1d quantum chaotic SY spin model into 1+1d chiral system with anyon excitations. Each WZW model hosts Abelian anyons as charge excitations, and may arise as the chiral edge theory of 2+1d gapped topological phases. We solve the chiral SY model in two limits which show distinct quantum dynamics. The first limit is the case with uniform interactions at any integers $N$ and $M$, which is integrable and decomposes into a chiral SU$(M)_N$ WZW model and its coset with different "speed of light". When $N=M=2$, the model maps to a free Majorana fermion model. The second limit is the large $N$ and $M$ limit with random interactions, which is solvable to the leading $\frac{1}{NM}$ order, and exhibits many-body quantum chaos in the out-of-time-ordered correlation of anyons. As the interaction strength approaches the upper limit preserving the chirality, the leading velocity-dependent Lyapunov exponent of the model saturates the maximal chaos bound $2π/β$ at temperature $β^{-1}$.

Integrability of the $ν=4/3$ fractional quantum Hall edge states

We investigate the homogeneous chiral edge theory of the filling $ν=4/3$ fractional quantum Hall state, which is parameterized by a Luttinger liquid velocity matrix and an electron tunneling amplitude (ignoring irrelevant terms). We identify two solvable cases: one case where the theory gives two free chiral boson modes, and the other case where the theory yields one free charge $\frac{2e}{\sqrt{3}}$ chiral fermion and two free chiral Bogoliubov (Majorana) fermions. For generic parameters, the energy spectrum from our exact diagonalization shows Poisson level spacing statistics (LSS) in each conserved charge and momentum sector, indicating the existence of hidden conserved quantities and the possibility that the generic edge theory of the $ν=4/3$ fractional quantum Hall state is integrable. We further show that a global symmetry preserving irrelevant nonlinear kinetic term will lead to the transition of LSS from Poisson to Wigner-Dyson at high energies. This further supports the possibility that the model without irrelevant terms is integrable.

Interacting 1D Chiral Fermions with Pairing: Transition from Integrable to Chaotic

We study a generic one-dimensonal quantum model of two flavors (pseudospins) chiral complex fermions by exact diagonalization, which can have local interflavor interaction and superconducting pairings (with all irrelevant terms ignored). Analytically, the model has two solvable (integrable) points in the parameter space: it is a free fermion model when the fermion interaction is zero, and is a free boson Luttinger liquid when there is a global U(1)$^{(\uparrow)}\times$U(1)$^{(\downarrow)}$ symmetry (with nonzero interaction). When the global symmetry of the interacting model is lowered by turning on symmetry breaking parameters, the model undergoes a transition from a quantum integrable model to a fully quantum chaotic model, as we demonstrate by examining the level spacing statistics (LSS) of the many-body energy spectrum. In particular, there is a possibly integrable regime with intermediate global symmetries, where the model is neither free bosons nor free fermions, but shows Poisson LSS in each global symmetry charge sector. This implies the existence of hidden (quasi)local conserved quantities. When the global symmetries are further lowered, the LSS in each charge sector becomes Wigner-Dyson, implying quantum chaos.

Magnetization-direction-tunable kagome Weyl line

Kagome magnets provide a fascinating platform for a plethora of topological quantum phenomena. Here, utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we demonstrate Weyl lines with strong out-of-plane dispersion in an A-A stacked kagome magnet TbxGd1-xMn6Sn6. On the Gd rich side, the Weyl line remains nearly spin-orbit-gapless due to a remarkable cooperative interplay between Kane-Mele spin-orbit-coupling, low site symmetry and in-plane magnetic order. Under Tb substitution, the kagome Weyl line gaps due to a magnetic reorientation to out-of-plane order. Our results illustrate the magnetic moment direction as an efficient tuning knob for realizing distinct three-dimensional topological phases.

The chiral SYK model

We study the generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model to a $1+1$ dimensional chiral SYK model of $N$ flavors of right-moving chiral Majorana fermions with all-to-all random 4-fermion interactions. The interactions in this model are exactly marginal, leading to an exact scaling symmetry. We show the Schwinger-Dyson equation of this model in the large $N$ limit is exactly solvable. In addition, we show this model is integrable for small $N\le6$ by bosonization. Surprisingly, the two point function in the large $N$ limit has exactly the same form as that for $N=4$, although the four point functions of the two cases are quite different. The ground state entropy in the large $N$ limit is the same as that of $N$ free chiral Majorana fermions, leading to a zero ground state entropy density. The OTOC of the model in the large $N$ limit exhibits a non-trivial spacetime structure reminscent of that found by Gu and Kitaev for generic SYK-like models. Specifically we find a Lyapunov regime inside an asymmetric butterfly cone, which are signatures of quantum chaos, and that the maximal velocity dependent Lyapunov exponent approaches the chaos bound $2π/β$ as the interaction strength approaches its physical upper bound. Finally, the model is integrable for (at least) $N\le6$ but chaotic in the large $N$ limit, leading us to conjecture that there is a transition from integrability to chaos as $N$ increases past a critical value.

To See a World in a Grain of Sand -- The Scientific Life of Shoucheng Zhang

Our friend and colleague, Prof. Shoucheng Zhang, passed away in 2018, which was a great loss for the entire physics community. For all of us who knew Shoucheng, it is difficult to overcome the sadness and shock of his early departure. However, we are very fortunate that Shoucheng has left us such a rich legacy and so many memories in his 55 years of life as a valuable friend, a world-leading physicist, a remarkable advisor, and a great thinker. On May 2-4, 2019, a memorial workshop for Shoucheng was organized at Stanford University, where we displayed a small exhibition of 12 posters, as a brief overview of Shoucheng's wonderful scientific life. This article is prepared based on those posters.

Twisted bilayer graphene I. Matrix elements, approximations, perturbation theory and a $k\cdot p$ 2-Band model

We investigate the Twisted Bilayer Graphene (TBG) model to obtain an analytic understanding of its energetics and wavefunctions needed for many-body calculations. We provide an approximation scheme which first elucidates why the BM $K_M$-point centered calculation containing only $4$ plane-waves provides a good analytical value for the first magic angle. The approximation scheme also elucidates why most many-body matrix elements in the Coulomb Hamiltonian projected to the active bands can be neglected. By applying our approximation scheme at the first magic angle to a $Γ_M$-point centered model of 6 plane-waves, we analytically understand the small $Γ_M$-point gap between the active and passive bands in the isotropic limit $w_0=w_1$. Furthermore, we analytically calculate the group velocities of passive bands in the isotropic limit, and show that they are \emph{almost} doubly degenerate, while no symmetry forces them to be. Furthermore, away from $Γ_M$ and $K_M$ points, we provide an explicit analytical perturbative understanding as to why the TBG bands are flat at the first magic angle, despite it is defined only by vanishing $K_M$-point Dirac velocity. We derive analytically a connected "magic manifold" $w_1=2\sqrt{1+w_0^2}-\sqrt{2+3w_0^2}$, on which the bands remain extremely flat as $w_0$ is tuned between the isotropic ($w_0=w_1$) and chiral ($w_0=0$) limits. We analytically show why going away from the isotropic limit by making $w_0$ less (but not larger) than $w_1$ increases the $Γ_M$- point gap between active and passive bands. Finally, perturbatively, we provide an analytic $Γ_M$ point $k\cdot p$ $2$-band model that reproduces the TBG band structure and eigenstates in a certain $w_0,w_1$ parameter range. Further refinement of this model suggests a possible faithful $2$-band $Γ_M$ point $k\cdot p$ model in the full $w_0, w_1$ parameter range.

Twisted bilayer graphene III. Interacting Hamiltonian and exact symmetries

We derive the explicit Hamiltonian of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with Coulomb interaction projected into the flat bands, and study the symmetries of the Hamiltonian. First, we show that all projected TBG Hamiltonians can be written as Positive Semidefinite Hamiltonian, the first example of which was found in [PRL 122, 246401]. We then prove that the interacting TBG Hamiltonian exhibits an exact U(4) symmetry in the exactly flat band (nonchiral-flat) limit. We further define, besides a first chiral limit where the AA stacking hopping is zero, a new second chiral limit where the AB/BA stacking hopping is zero. In the first chiral-flat limit (or second chiral-flat limit) with exactly flat bands, the TBG is enhanced to have an exact U(4)$\times$U(4) symmetry, whose generators are different between the two chiral limits. While in the first chiral limit and in the non-chiral case these symmetries have been found in [PRX 10, 031034] for the $8$ lowest bands, we here prove that they are valid for projection into any $8 n_\text{max}$ particle-hole symmetric TBG bands, with $n_\text{max}>1$ being the practical case for small twist angles $<1^\circ$. Furthermore, in the first or second chiral-nonflat limit without flat bands, an exact U(4) symmetry still remains. We also elucidate the link between the U(4) symmetry presented here and the similar but different U(4) of [PRL 122, 246401]. Furthermore, we show that our projected Hamiltonian can be viewed as the normal-ordered Coulomb interaction plus a Hartree-Fock term from passive bands, and exhibits a many-body particle-hole symmetry which renders the physics symmetric around charge neutrality. We also provide an efficient parameterization of the interacting Hamiltonian. The existence of two chiral limits, with an enlarged symmetry suggests a possible duality of the model yet undiscovered.

Twisted Bilayer Graphene IV. Exact Insulator Ground States and Phase Diagram

We derive the exact insulator ground states of the projected Hamiltonian of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) flat bands with Coulomb interactions in various limits, and study the perturbations away from these limits. We define the (first) chiral limit where the AA stacking hopping is zero, and a flat limit with exactly flat bands. In the chiral-flat limit, the TBG Hamiltonian has a U(4)$\times$U(4) symmetry, and we find that the exact ground states at integer filling $-4\le ν\le 4$ relative to charge neutrality are Chern insulators of Chern numbers $ν_C=4-|ν|,2-|ν|,\cdots,|ν|-4$, all of which are degenerate. This confirms recent experiments where Chern insulators are found to be competitive low-energy states of TBG. When the chiral-flat limit is reduced to the nonchiral-flat limit which has a U(4) symmetry, we find $ν=0,\pm2$ has exact ground states of Chern number $0$, while $ν=\pm1,\pm3$ has perturbative ground states of Chern number $ν_C=\pm1$, which are U(4) ferromagnetic. In the chiral-nonflat limit with a different U(4) symmetry, different Chern number states are degenerate up to second order perturbations. In the realistic nonchiral-nonflat case, we find that the perturbative insulator states with Chern number $ν_C=0$ ($0<|ν_C|<4-|ν|$) at integer fillings $ν$ are fully (partially) intervalley coherent, while the insulator states with Chern number $|ν_C|=4-|ν|$ are valley polarized. However, for $0<|ν_C|\le4-|ν|$, the fully intervalley coherent states are highly competitive (0.005meV/electron higher). At nonzero magnetic field $|B|>0$, a first-order phase transition for $ν=\pm1,\pm2$ from Chern number $ν_C=\text{sgn}(νB)(2-|ν|)$ to $ν_C=\text{sgn}(νB)(4-|ν|)$ is expected, which agrees with recent experimental observations. Lastly, the TBG Hamiltonian reduces into an extended Hubbard model in the stabilizer code limit.

Twisted Bilayer Graphene V: Exact Analytic Many-Body Excitations in Twisted Bilayer Graphene Coulomb Hamiltonians: Charge Gap, Goldstone Modes and Absence of Cooper Pairing

We find exact analytic expressions for the energies and wavefunctions of the charged and neutral excitations above the exact ground states (at rational filling per unit cell) of projected Coulomb Hamiltonians in twisted bilayer graphene. Our exact expressions are valid for any form of the Coulomb interaction and any form of $AA$ and $AB/BA$ tunneling. The single charge excitation energy is a convolution of the Coulomb potential with a quantum geometric tensor of the TBG bands. The neutral excitations are (high-symmetry group) magnons, and their dispersion is analytically calculated in terms of the form factors of the active bands in TBG. The two-charge excitation energy and wavefunctions are also obtained, and a sufficient condition on the graphene eigenstates for obtaining a Cooper-pair from Coulomb interactions is obtained. For the actual TBG bands at the first magic angle, we can analytically show that the Cooper pair binding energy is zero in all such projected Coulomb models, implying that either phonons and/or non-zero kinetic energy are needed for superconductivity. Since the [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 246401] showed that the kinetic energy bounds on the superexchange energy are less $10^{-3}$ in Coulomb units, the phonon mechanism becomes then very likely. If nonetheless the superconductivity is due to kinetic terms which render the bands non-flat, one prediction of our theory is that the highest $T_c$ would not occur at the highest DOS.

Twisted bilayer graphene. II. Stable symmetry anomaly

We show that the entire continuous model of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) (and not just the two active bands) with particle-hole symmetry is anomalous and hence incompatible with a lattice model. Previous works, e.g., [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 036401], [Phys. Rev. X 9, 021013], [Phys. Rev. B 99, 195455], and others [1-4] found that the two flat bands in TBG possess a fragile topology protected by the $C_{2z}T$ symmetry. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 036401] also pointed out an approximate particle-hole symmetry ($\mathcal{P}$) in the continuous model of TBG. In this work, we numerically confirm that $\mathcal{P}$ is indeed a good approximation for TBG and show that the fragile topology of the two flat bands is enhanced to a $\mathcal{P}$-protected stable topology. This stable topology implies $4l+2$ ($l\in\mathbb{N}$) Dirac points between the middle two bands. The $\mathcal{P}$-protected stable topology is robust against arbitrary gap closings between the middle two bands the other bands. We further show that, remarkably, this $\mathcal{P}$-protected stable topology, as well as the corresponding $4l + 2$ Dirac points, cannot be realized in lattice models that preserve both $C_{2z}T$ and $\mathcal{P}$ symmetries. In other words, the continuous model of TBG is anomalous and cannot be realized on lattices. Two other topology related topics, with consequences for the interacting TBG problem, i.e., the choice of Chern band basis in the two flat bands and the perfect metal phase of TBG in the so-called second chiral limit, are also discussed.

Twisted bilayer graphene.VI. An Exact Diagonalization Study of Twisted Bilayer Graphene at Non-Zero Integer Fillings

Using exact diagonalization, we study the projected Hamiltonian with Coulomb interaction in the 8 flat bands of first magic angle twisted bilayer graphene. Employing the U(4) (U(4)$\times$U(4)) symmetries in the nonchiral (chiral) flat band limit, we reduced the Hilbert space to an extent which allows for study around $ν=\pm 3,\pm2,\pm1$ fillings. In the first chiral limit $w_0/w_1=0$ where $w_0$ ($w_1$) is the $AA$ ($AB$) stacking hopping, we find that the ground-states at these fillings are extremely well-described by Slater determinants in a so-called Chern basis, and the exactly solvable charge $\pm1$ excitations found in [arXiv:2009.14200] are the lowest charge excitations up to system sizes $8\times8$ (for restricted Hilbert space) in the chiral-flat limit. We also find that the Flat Metric Condition (FMC) used in [arXiv:2009.11301,2009.11872,2009.12376,2009.13530,2009.14200] for obtaining a series of exact ground-states and excitations holds in a large parameter space. For $ν=-3$, the ground state is the spin and valley polarized Chern insulator with $ν_C=\pm1$ at $w_0/w_1\lesssim0.9$ (0.3) with (without) FMC. At $ν=-2$, we can only numerically access the valley polarized sector, and we find a spin ferromagnetic phase when $w_0/w_1\gtrsim0.5t$ where $t\in[0,1]$ is the factor of rescaling of the actual TBG bandwidth, and a spin singlet phase otherwise, confirming the perturbative calculation [arXiv:2009.13530]. The analytic FMC ground state is, however, predicted in the intervalley coherent sector which we cannot access [arXiv:2009.13530]. For $ν=-3$ with/without FMC, when $w_0/w_1$ is large, the finite-size gap $Δ$ to the neutral excitations vanishes, leading to phase transitions. Further analysis of the ground state momentum sectors at $ν=-3$ suggests a competition among (nematic) metal, momentum $M_M$ ($π$) stripe and $K_M$-CDW orders at large $w_0/w_1$.

Conserved Quantities from Entanglement Hamiltonian

We show that the subregion entanglement Hamiltonians of excited eigenstates of a quantum many-body system are approximately linear combinations of subregionally (quasi)local approximate conserved quantities, with relative commutation errors $\mathcal{O}\left(\frac{\text{subregion boundary area}}{\text{subregion volume}}\right)$. By diagonalizing an entanglement Hamiltonian superdensity matrix (EHSM) for an ensemble of eigenstates, we can obtain these conserved quantities as the EHSM eigen-operators with nonzero eigenvalues. For free fermions, we find the number of nonzero EHSM eigenvalues is cut off around the order of subregion volume, and some of their EHSM eigen-operators can be rather nonlocal, although subregionally quasilocal. In the interacting XYZ model, we numerically find the nonzero EHSM eigenvalues decay roughly in power law if the system is integrable, with the exponent $s\approx 1$ ($s\approx 1.5\sim 2$) if the eigenstates are extended (many-body localized). For fully chaotic systems, only two EHSM eigenvalues are significantly nonzero, the eigen-operators of which correspond to the identity and the subregion Hamiltonian.

Cascade of electronic transitions in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) exhibits a rich variety of electronic states, including correlated insulators, superconductors, and topological phases. Understanding the microscopic mechanisms responsible for these phases requires determining the interplay between electron-electron interactions and quantum degeneracy due to spin and valley degrees of freedom. Signatures of strong electron-electron correlations have been observed at partial fillings of the flat electronic bands in recent spectroscopic measurements. Transport experiments have shown changes in the Landau level degeneracy at fillings corresponding to an integer number of electrons per moiré unit cell. However, the interplay between interaction effects and the degeneracy of the system is currently unclear. Using high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we observed a cascade of transitions in the spectroscopic properties of MATBG as a function of electron filling. We find distinct changes in the chemical potential and a rearrangement of the low-energy excitations at each integer filling of the moiré flat bands. These spectroscopic features are a direct consequence of Coulomb interactions, which split the degenerate flat bands into Hubbard sub-bands. We find these interactions, the strength of which we can extract experimentally, to be surprisingly sensitive to the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, which strongly modifies the spectroscopic transitions. The cascade of transitions we report here characterizes the correlated high-temperature parent phase from which various insulating and superconducting ground-state phases emerge at low temperatures in MATBG.

Discovery of a quantum limit Chern magnet TbMn6Sn6

The quantum level interplay between geometry, topology, and correlation is at the forefront of fundamental physics. Owing to the unusual lattice geometry and breaking of time-reversal symmetry, kagome magnets are predicted to support intrinsic Chern quantum phases. However, quantum materials hosting ideal spin-orbit coupled kagome lattices with strong out-of-plane magnetization have been lacking. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to discover a new topological kagome magnet TbMn6Sn6, which is close to satisfying the above criteria. We visualize its effectively defect-free purely Mn-based ferromagnetic kagome lattice with atomic resolution. Remarkably, its electronic state exhibits distinct Landau quantization upon the application of a magnetic field, and the quantized Landau fan structure features spin-polarized Dirac dispersion with a large Chern gap. We further demonstrate the bulk-boundary correspondence between the Chern gap and topological edge state, as well as the Berry curvature field correspondence of Chern gapped Dirac fermions. Our results point to the realization of a quantum-limit Chern phase in TbMn6Sn6, opening up an avenue for discovering topological quantum phenomena in the RMn6Sn6 (R = rare earth element) family with a variety of magnetic structures. Our visualization of the magnetic bulk-boundary-Berry correspondence covering real and momentum space demonstrates a proof-of-principle method revealing topological magnets.

The Landau Level of Fragile Topology

We study the Hofstadter butterfly and Landau levels of the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). We show that the nontrivial fragile topology of the lowest two bands near the charge neutral point makes their Hofstadter butterfly generically connected with higher bands, closing the gap between the first and second conduction (valence) bands at a certain magnetic flux per unit cell. We also develop a momentum space method for calculating the TBG Hofstadter butterfly, from which we identify three phases where the Hofstadter butterflies of the lowest two bands and the higher bands are connected in different ways. We show this leads to a crossing between the $ν=4$ Landau fan from the charge neutral point and the zero field band gap at one flux per Moiré unit cell, which corresponds to a magnetic field $25θ^2$T (twist angle $θ$ in degrees). This provides an experimentally testable feature of the fragile topology. In general, we expect it to be a generic feature that the Hofstadter butterfly of topological bands are connected with the Hofstadter spectra of other bands. We further show the TBG band theory with Zeeman splitting being the most sizable splitting could result in Landau fans at the charge neutral point and half fillings near the magic angle, and we predict their variations under an in-plane magnetic field.

Topological photocurrent responses from chiral surface Fermi arcs

The nonlinear optical responses from topological semimetals are crucial in both understanding the fundamental properties of quantum materials and designing next-generation light-sensors or solar-cells. However, previous work was focusing on the optical effects from bulk states only, disregarding topological surface responses. Here we propose a new (hitherto unknown) surface-only topological photocurrent response from chiral Fermi arcs. Using the ideal topological chiral semimetal RhSi as a representative, we quantitatively compute the topologically robust photocurrents from Fermi arcs on different surfaces. By rigorous crystal symmetry analysis, we demonstrate that Fermi arc photocurrents can be perpendicular to the bulk injection currents regardless of the choice of materials' surface. We then generalize this finding to all cubic chiral space groups and predict material candidates. Our theory reveals a powerful notion where common crystalline-symmetry can be used to induce universal topological responses as well as making it possible to completely disentangle bulk and surface topological responses in many conducting material families.

Topology-Bounded Superfluid Weight In Twisted Bilayer Graphene

While regular flat bands are good for enhancing the density of states and hence the gap, they are detrimental to the superfluid weight. We show that the predicted nontrivial topology of the two lowest flat bands of twisted bilayer graphene plays an important role in the enhancement of the superfluid weight and hence of superconductivity. We derive the superfluid weight (phase stiffness) of the TBLG superconducting flat bands with a uniform pairing, and show that it can be expressed as an integral of the Fubini-Study metric of the flat bands. This mirrors results already obtained for nonzero Chern number bands even though the TBLG flat bands have zero Chern number. We further show the metric integral is lower bounded by the topological $C_{2z}T$ Wilson loop winding number of the TBLG flat bands, which renders the superfluid weight has a topological lower bound proportional to the pairing gap. In contrast, trivial flat bands have a zero superfluid weight. The superfluid weight is crucial in determining the BKT transition temperature of the superconductor. Based on the transition temperature measured in TBLG experiments, we estimate the topological contribution of the superfluid weight in TBLG.

A Five Dimensional Generalization of the Topological Weyl Semimetal

We generalize the concept of three-dimensional topological Weyl semimetal to a class of five dimensional (5D) gapless solids, where Weyl points are generalized to Weyl surfaces which are two-dimensional closed manifolds in the momentum space. Each Weyl surface is characterized by a U(1) second Chern number $C_2$ defined on a four-dimensional manifold enclosing the Weyl surface, which is equal to its topological linking number with other Weyl surfaces in 5D. In analogy to the Weyl semimetals, the surface states of the 5D metal take the form of topologically protected Weyl fermion arcs, which connect the projections of the bulk Weyl surfaces. The further generalization of topological metal in $2n+1$ dimensions carrying the $n$-th Chern number $C_n$ is also discussed.

Edge State Induced Andreev Oscillation in Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulator-Superconductor Junctions

We study the quantum Andreev oscillation induced by interference of the edge chiral Majorana fermions in junctions made of quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators and superconductors (SCs). We show two chiral Majorana fermions on a QAH edge with SC proximity generically have a momentum difference $Δk$, which depends on the chemical potentials of both the QAH insulator and the SC. Due to the spatial interference induced by $Δk$, the longitudinal conductance of QAH-SC junctions oscillates with respect to the edge lengths and the chemical potentials, which can be probed via charge transport. Furthermore, we show the dynamical SC phase fluctuation will give rise to a geometrical correction to the longitudinal conductance of the junctions.

Generation of Spin Currents by Magnetic Field in $\mathcal{T}$- and $\mathcal{P}$-Broken Materials

Pure spin currents carry information in quantum spintronics and could play an essential role in the next generation low-energy-consumption electronics. Here we theoretically predict that the magnetic field can induce a quantum spin current without a concomitant charge current in metals without time reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ and inversion symmetry $\mathcal{P}$ but respect the combined $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. It is governed by the magnetic moment of the Bloch states on the Fermi surface, and can be regarded as a spinful generalization of the gyrotropic magnetic effect in $\mathcal{P}$-broken metals. The effect is explicitly studied for a minimal model of an antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetal, where the experimental signature is proposed. We further propose candidate materials, including topological antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetals, Weyl semimetals, and tenary Heusler compounds.

Topological superconductivity on the surface of Fe-based superconductors

As one of the simplest systems for realizing Majorana fermions, topological superconductor plays an important role in both condensed matter physics and quantum computations. Based on \emph{ab~initio} calculations and the analysis of an effective 8-band model with the superconducting pairing, we demonstrate that the three dimensional extended $s$-wave Fe-based superconductors such as Fe$_{1+\text{y}}$Se$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ have a metallic topologically nontrivial band structure, and exhibit a normal-topological-normal superconductivity phase transition on the ($001$) surface by tuning the bulk carrier doping level. In the topological superconductivity (TSC) phase, a Majorana zero mode is trapped at the end of a magnetic vortex line. We further show that, the surface TSC phase only exists up to a certain bulk pairing gap, and there is a normal-topological phase transition driven by the temperature, which has not been discussed before. These results pave an effective way to realize the TSC and Majorana fermions in a large class of superconductors.

Broadband Linear-Dichroic Photodetector in a Black Phosphorus Vertical p-n Junction

The ability to detect light over a broad spectral range is central for practical optoelectronic applications, and has been successfully demonstrated with photodetectors of two-dimensional layered crystals such as graphene and MoS2. However, polarization sensitivity within such a photodetector remains elusive. Here we demonstrate a linear-dichroic broadband photodetector with layered black phosphorus transistors, using the strong intrinsic linear dichroism arising from the in-plane optical anisotropy with respect to the atom-buckled direction, which is polarization sensitive over a broad bandwidth from 400 nm to 3750 nm. Especially, a perpendicular build-in electric field induced by gating in black phosphorus transistors can spatially separate the photo-generated electrons and holes in the channel, effectively reducing their recombination rate, and thus enhancing the efficiency and performance for linear dichroism photodetection. This provides new functionality using anisotropic layered black phosphorus, thereby enabling novel optical and optoelectronic device applications.

Chiral topological superconductor and half-integer conductance plateau from quantum anomalous Hall plateau transition

We propose to realize a two-dimensional chiral topological superconducting (TSC) state from the quantum anomalous Hall plateau transition in a magnetic topological insulator thin film through the proximity effect to a conventional $s$-wave superconductor. This state has a full pairing gap in the bulk and a single chiral Majorana mode at the edge. The optimal condition for realizing such chiral TSC is to have inequivalent superconducting pairing amplitudes on top and bottom surfaces of the doped magnetic topological insulator. We further propose several transport experiments to detect the chiral TSC. One unique signature is that the conductance will be quantized into a half-integer plateau at the coercive field in this hybrid system. In particular, with the point contact formed by a superconducting junction, the conductance oscillates between $e^2/2h$ and $e^2/h$ with the frequency determined by the voltage across the junction. We close by discussing the feasibility of these experimental proposals.

Dynamical Axion Field in a Magnetic Topological Insulator Superlattice

We propose that the dynamical axion field can be realized in a magnetic topological insulator superlattice or a topological paramagnetic insulator. The magnetic fluctuations of these systems produce a pseudoscalar field which has an axionic coupling to the electromagnetic field, and thus it gives a condensed-matter realization of the axion electrodynamics. Compared to the previously proposed dynamical axion materials where a long range antiferromagnetic order is required, the systems proposed here have the advantage that only a uniform magnetization or a paramagnetic state is needed for the dynamic axion. We further propose several experiments to detect such a dynamical axion field.

Electrically Tunable Magnetism in Magnetic Topological Insulators

The external controllability of the magnetic properties in topological insulators would be important both for fundamental and practical interests. Here we predict the electric-field control of ferromagnetism in a thin film of insulating magnetic topological insulators. The decrease of band inversion by the application of electric fields results in a reduction of magnetic susceptibility, and hence in the modification of magnetism. Remarkably, the electric field could even induce the magnetic quantum phase transition from ferromagnetism to paramagnetism. We further propose a topological transistor device in which the dissipationless charge transport of chiral edge states is controlled by an electric field. In particular, the field-controlled ferromagnetism in magnetic topological insulator can be used for voltage based writing of magnetic random access memories in magnetic tunnel junctions. The simultaneous electrical control of magnetic order and chiral edge transport in such devices may lead to electronic and spintronic applications for topological insulators.

Intrinsic Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in the Kagome Lattice Cs2LiMn3F12

In a kagome lattice, the time reversal symmetry can be broken by a staggered magnetic flux emerging from ferromagnetic ordering and intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, leading to several wellseparated nontrivial Chern bands and intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall effect. Based on this idea and ab initio calculations, we propose the realization of the intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall effect in the single layer Cs2Mn3F12 kagome lattice and on the (001) surface of a Cs2LiMn3F12 single crystal by modifying the carrier coverage on it, where the band gap is around 20 meV. Moreover, a simplified tight binding model based on the in-plane ddσantibonding states is constructed to understand the topological band structures of the system.

Quantized topological magnetoelectric effect of the zero-plateau quantum anomalous Hall state

Topological magnetoelectric effect in a three-dimensional topological insulator is a novel phenomenon, where an electric field induces a magnetic field in the same direction, with a universal coefficient of proportionality quantized in units of $e^2/2h$. Here we propose that the topological magnetoelectric effect can be realized in the zero-plateau quantum anomalous Hall state of magnetic topological insulators or ferromagnet-topological insulator heterostructure. The finite-size effect is also studied numerically, where the magnetoelectric coefficient is shown to converge to a quantized value when the thickness of topological insulator film increases. We further propose a device setup to eliminate the non-topological contributions from the side surface.

Quantum anomalous Hall effect in magnetic topological insulators

The search for topologically non-trivial states of matter has become an important goal for condensed matter physics. Here, we give a theoretical introduction to the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect based on magnetic topological insulators in two-dimension (2D) and three-dimension (3D). In 2D topological insulators, magnetic order breaks the symmetry between the counter-propagating helical edge states, and as a result, the quantum spin Hall effect can evolve into the QAH effect. In 3D, magnetic order opens up a gap for the topological surface states, and chiral edge state has been predicted to exist on the magnetic domain walls. We present the phase diagram in thin films of a magnetic topological insulator and review the basic mechanism of ferromagnetic order in magnetically doped topological insulators. We also review the recent experimental observation of the QAH effect. We discuss more recent theoretical work on the coexistence of the helical and chiral edge states, multi-channel chiral edge states, the theory of the plateau transition, and the thickness dependence in the QAH effect.

Spontaneous Spin Textures in Dipolar Spinor Condensates: A Dirac String Gas Approach

We study the spontaneous spin textures induced by magnetic dipole-dipole interaction in ferromagnetic spinor condensates under various trap geometries. At the mean-field level, we show the system is dual to a Dirac string gas with a negative string tension in which the ground state spin texture can be easily determined. We find that three-dimensional condensates prefer a meron-like vortex texture, quasi one-dimensional condensates prefer the axially polarized flare texture, while condensates in quasi two dimensions exhibit either a meron texture or an in-plane polarized texture.

Unexpected edge conduction in HgTe quantum wells under broken time reversal symmetry

The realization of quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect in HgTe quantum wells (QWs) is considered a milestone in the discovery of topological insulators. The QSH edge states are predicted to allow current to flow at the edges of an insulating bulk, as demonstrated in various experiments. A key prediction of QSH theory that remains to be experimentally verified is the breakdown of the edge conduction under broken time reversal symmetry (TRS). Here we first establish a rigorous framework for understanding the magnetic field dependence of electrostatically gated QSH devices. We then report unexpected edge conduction under broken TRS, using a unique cryogenic microwave impedance microscopy (MIM), on a 7.5 nm HgTe QW device with an inverted band structure. At zero magnetic field and low carrier densities, clear edge conduction is observed in the local conductivity profile of this device but not in the 5.5 nm control device whose band structure is trivial. Surprisingly, the edge conduction in the 7.5 nm device persists up to 9 T with little effect from the magnetic field. This indicates physics beyond simple QSH models, possibly associated with material- specific properties, other symmetry protection and/or electron-electron interactions.

Generation and Electric Control of Spin-Coupled Valley Current in WSe2

The valley degree of freedom in layered transition-metal dichalcogenides (MX2) provides the opportunity to extend functionalities of novel spintronics and valleytronics devices. Due to spin splitting induced by spin-orbital coupling (SOC), the non-equilibrium charge carrier imbalance between two degenerate and inequivalent valleys to realize valley/spin polarization has been successfully demonstrated theoretically and supported by optical experiments. However, the generation of a valley/spin current by the valley polarization in MX2 remains elusive and a great challenge. Here, within an electric-double-layer transistor based on WSe2, we demonstrated a spin-coupled valley photocurrent whose direction and magnitude depend on the degree of circular polarization of the incident radiation and can be further greatly modulated with an external electric field. Such room temperature generation and electric control of valley/spin photocurrent provides a new property of electrons in MX2 systems, thereby enabling new degrees of control for quantum-confined spintronics devices.

Singlet Mott State Simulating the Bosonic Laughlin Wave Function

We study properties of a class of spin singlet Mott states for arbitrary spin S bosons on a lattice, with particle number per cite n=S/l+1, where l is a positive integer. We show that such a singlet Mott state can be mapped to a bosonic Laughlin wave function on the sphere with a finite number of particles at filling ν=1/2l. Spin, particle and hole excitations in the Mott state are discussed, among which the hole excitation can be mapped to the quasi-hole of the bosonic Laughlin wave function. We show that this singlet Mott state can be realized in a cold atom system on optical lattice, and can be identified using Bragg spectroscopy and Stern-Gerlach techniques. This class of singlet Mott states may be generalized to simulate bosonic Laughlin states with filling ν=q/2l.

Spin Liquid Condensate of Spinful Bosons

We introduce the concept of a bosonic spin liquid condensate (SLC), where spinful bosons in a lattice form a zero-temperature spin disordered charge condensate that preserves the spin rotation symmetry, but breaks the U(1) symmetry due to a spinless order parameter with charge one. It has an energy gap to all the spin excitations. We show that such SLC states can be realized in a system of spin $S\ge 2$ bosons. In particular, we analyze the SLC phase diagram in the spin 2 case using a mean-field variational wave function method. We show there is a direct analogy between the SLC and the resonating-valence-bond (RVB) state.

Universal Scaling of Quantum Anomalous Hall Plateau Transition

We study the critical properties of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) plateau transition in magnetic topological insulators. We introduce a microscopic model for the plateau transition in QAH effect at the coercive field and then map it to the network model of quantum percolation in the integer quantum Hall effect plateau transition. Generally, an intermediate plateau with zero Hall conductance could occur at the coercive field. $σ_{xx}$ would have double peaks at the coercivity while $ρ_{xx}$ only has single peak. Remarkably, this theoretical prediction is already borne out in experiment. Universal scaling of the transport coefficients $ρ_{xy}$ and $ρ_{xx}$ are predicted.

Anomalous Edge Transport in the Quantum Anomalous Hall State

We predict by first-principles calculations that thin films of Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ magnetic topological insulator have gapless non-chiral edge states coexisting with the chiral edge state. Such gapless non-chiral states are not immune to backscattering, which would explain dissipative transport in the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state observed in this system experimentally. Here we study the edge transport with both chiral and non-chiral states by Landaur-Büttiker formalism, and find that the longitudinal resistance is nonzero whereas Hall resistance is quantized to $h/e^2$. In particular, the longitudinal resistance can be greatly reduced by adding an extra floating probe even if it is not used, while the Hall resistance remains at the quantized value. We propose several transport experiments to detect the dissipative non-chiral edge channels. These results will facilitate the realization of pure dissipationless transport of QAH states in magnetic topological insulators.

Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect with Higher Plateaus

Quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in magnetic topological insulators is driven by the combination of spontaneous magnetic moments and spin-orbit coupling. Its recent experimental discovery raises the question if higher plateaus can also be realized. Here we present a general theory for QAH effect with higher Chern numbers, and show by first-principles calculations that thin film magnetic topological insulator of Cr-doped Bi$_2$(Se,Te)$_3$ is a candidate for the C=2 QAH insulator. Remarkably, whereas higher magnetic field leads to lower Hall conductance plateaus in the integer quantum Hall effect, higher magnetic moment leads to higher Hall conductance plateaus in the QAH effect.

Relativistic Self-similar Dynamic Collapses of Black Holes in General Polytropic Spherical Clouds

We study the hydrodynamic self-similar mass collapses of general polytropic (GP) spherical clouds to central Schwarzschild black holes and void evolution with or without shocks. In order to grossly capture characteristic effects of general relativity (GR) outside yet close to the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole and to avoid mathematical complexity, we adopt the approximation of the Paczynski-Wiita gravity to replace the simple Newtonian gravity in our model formulation. A new dimensionless parameter s appears with the physical meaning of the square of the ratio of the sound speed to the speed of light $c$. Various self-similar dynamic solutions are constructed for a polytropic index $γ>4/3$. Two (for small enough $s<1$) or no (for large enough $s<1$) expansion-wave collapse solutions (EWCSs) with central event horizons exist when $γ>4/3$, representing the collapse of static singular GP spheres towards the central singularity of spacetime. Such GP spherical dynamic mass collapse is shown to be highly efficient for the rapid formation of supermassive black holes (SMBHs; mass range of $10^6-10^{10}M_{\odot}$) in the early universe or even hypermassive black holes (HMBHs; mass range of $10^{10}-10^{12}M_{\odot}$) if extremely massive mass reservoirs could be sustained for a sufficiently long time, which may evolve into hard X-ray/gamma ray sources or quasars according to their surroundings. Self-similar dynamic solutions of a GP gas are also proposed for the stellar mass black hole formation during the violent supernova explosion of a massive progenitor star, the timescale of which is estimated of $10^{-3}$ seconds. Rebound shocks travelling in supernovae are also discussed based on our self-similar shock expansion solutions.

Synthetic Gauge Field with Highly Magnetic Lanthanide Atoms

We present a scheme for generating a synthetic magnetic field and spin-orbit coupling via Raman coupling in highly magnetic lanthanide atoms such as dysprosium. Employing these atoms offer several advantages for realizing strongly correlated states and exotic spinor phases. The large spin and narrow optical transitions of these atoms allow the generation of synthetic magnetic fields an order of magnitude larger than those in the alkalis, but with considerable reduction of the heating rate for equal Raman coupling. The effective hamiltonian of these systems differs from that of the alkalis' by an additional nematic coupling term, which leads to a phase transition in the dressed states as detuning varies. For \text{high-spin} condensates, spin-orbit coupling leads to a spatially periodic structure, which is described in Majorana representation by a set of points moving periodically on a unit sphere. We name this a "Majorana spinor helix" in analogy to the persistent spin-1/2 helix observed in electronic systems.

Searching for Non-Abelian Phases in the Bose-Einstein Condensate of Dysprosium

The recently realized Bose-Einstein condensate of Dysprosium will become a spin-8 spinor condensate at ultralow magnetic fields. In such a high spin condensate, many phases with different symmetries can exist. Among them the most interesting ones are those with non-abelian point group symmetry. In this letter we discuss the variety of symmetry phases in a spin-8 condensate resulting from numerical solutions of the Hamiltonian. We show that these symmetries can be determined uniquely from the measurements of density population on each spin component in an ultralow magnetic field, together with the measurements of the collective modes in the zero-field limit. This method can also be applied to Bose-Einstein condensate of other magnetic atoms, such as Cr and Er.

The Cornerstone Of Spin Statistics Connection: The SU(2)$\times$ C $\times$ T Symmetry

We investigate the intrinsic reason for spin statistics connection. It is found that if a free field theory is rotationally (SU(2)) invariant, and has time reversal ($T$) and charge conjugation ($C$) symmetries, it obeys the spin statistics connection, except for a special case. Shr{ö}dinger equation belongs to this special case, and does not obey spin statistics connection. Further we show that if the energy spectrum of a particle $E(p)$ takes the form of a square root, namely contains branch points in the complex $p$ plane, the particle cannot belong to this special case, and must obey the spin statistics connection. This conclusion includes the relativistic particles as a particular example.

Three-dimensional Hydrodynamic Instabilities in Stellar Core Collapses

A spherically symmetric hydrodynamic stellar core collapse under gravity is time-dependent and may become unstable once disturbed. Specifically for a homologously collapse of stellar core characterized by a polytropic exponent Γ=4/3, we examine oscillations and/or instabilities of three dimensional (3D) general polytropic perturbations. For compressible 3D perturbations, the polytropic index γof perturbations can differ from Γ=4/3 of the general polytropic hydrodynamic background flow. Our model formulation here is more general and allows the existence of internal gravity g(-)-modes and/or g(+)-modes. Eigenvalues and eigen-functions of various oscillatory and unstable perturbation modes are computed. As studied in several specialized cases of Goldreich & Weber and of Cao & Lou, we further confirm that acoustic p-modes and surface f-modes remain stable in the current more general situations. In comparison, g(-)-modes and sufficiently high radial order g(+)-modes are unstable, leading to inevitable convective motions within the collapsing stellar interior. Unstable growths of 3D g-mode disturbances are governed dominantly by the angular momentum conservation and modified by the gas pressure restoring force. We note in particular that unstable temporal growths of 3D vortical perturbations exist even when the specific entropy distribution becomes uniform and γ=Γ=4/3. Conceptually, unstable g-modes might bear conceivable physical consequences on supernova explosions, the initial kicks of nascent proto-neutron stars (PNSs) and break-ups of the collapsing core, while unstable growths of vortical perturbations can lead to fast spins of compact objects and other relevant results.
