Existence and Blow-up of solutions for Stochastic Modified Two-component Camassa-Holm System

In this paper, we consider the modified two-component Camassa-Holm System with multiplicative noise. For these SPDEs, we first establish the local existence and pathwise uniqueness of the pathwise solutions in Sobolev spaces $H^{s}\times H^{s}, s>\frac{3}{2}$. Then we show that strong enough noise can actually prevent blow-up with probability 1. Finally, we analyse the effects of weak noise and present conditions on the initial data that lead to the global existence and the blow-up in finite time of the solutions, and their associated probabilities are also obtained.

Estimate of Heat Kernel for Euler-Maruyama Scheme of SDEs Driven by α-Stable Noise and Applications

In this paper, the discrete parameter expansion is adopted to investigate the estimation of heat kernel for Euler-Maruyama scheme of SDEs driven by α-stable noise, which implies krylov's estimate and khasminskii's estimate. As an application, the convergence rate of Euler-Maruyama scheme of a class of multidimensional SDEs with singular drift( in aid of Zvonkin's transformation) is obtained.

Imaging moving atoms by holographically reconstructing the dragged slow light

The propagation of light in moving media is dragged by atomic motion. The light-drag effect can be dramatically enhanced by reducing the group velocity with electro-magnetically induced transparency (EIT). We develop a systematic procedure to accurately reconstruct the complex wavefront of the slow light with single-shot measurements, enabling precise, photon shot-noise limited spectroscopic measurements of atomic response across EIT even in presence of generic atomic number fluctuations. Applying the technique to an expanding cloud of cold atoms, we demonstrate simultaneous inference of the atomic density distribution and the velocity field from the complex imaging data. This inline imaging technique may assist a wide range of cold atom experiments to access spectroscopic and phase space information with in situ and minimally destructive measurements.

Intense, wideband optical waveform generation by self-balanced amplification of fiber electro-optical sideband modulation

We demonstrate a simple method to obtain accurate optical waveforms with a GHz-level programmable modulation bandwidth and Watt-level output power for wideband optical control of free atoms and molecules. Arbitrary amplitude and phase modulations are transferred from microwave to light with a low-power fiber electro-optical modulator. The sub-milliWatt optical sideband is co-amplified with the optical carrier in a power-balanced fashion through a tapered semiconductor amplifier (TSA). By automatically keeping TSA near saturation in a quasi-continuous manner, typical noise channels associated with pulsed high-gain amplifications are efficiently suppressed. As an example application, we demonstrate interleaved cooling and trapping of two rubidium isotopes with coherent nanosecond pulses.

Leptophilic U(1) Massive Vector Bosons from Large Extra Dimensions: Reexamination of Constraints from LEP Data

Very recently, we proposed an explanation of the discrepancy between the measured anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the Standard Model (SM) prediction in which the dominant contribution to $(g-2)_μ$ originates in Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations (of the lepton gauge boson) which do not mix with quarks (to lowest order) and therefore can be quite light avoiding LHC constraints. In this addendum we reexamine the bounds on 4-fermion contact interactions from precise electroweak measurements and show that the constraints on KK masses and couplings are more severe than earlier thought. However, we demonstrate that our explanation remains plausible if a few KK modes are lighter than LEP energy, because if this were the case the contribution to the 4-fermion scattering from the internal propagator would be dominated by the energy and not by the mass. To accommodate the $(g-2)_μ$ discrepancy we assume that the lepton number $L$ does not partake in the hypercharge and propagates in one extra dimension (transverse to the SM branes): for a mass of the lowest KK excitation of 60 GeV (lower than the LEP energy), the string scale is roughly 10 TeV while the $L$ gauge coupling is of order $\sim 10^{-1}$.

Singular McKean-Vlasov (Reflecting) SDEs with Distribution Dependent Noise

By using Zvonkin's transformation and a two-step fixed point argument in distributions, the well-posedness and regularity estimates are derived for singular McKean-Vlasov SDEs with distribution dependent noise, where the drift contains a term growing linearly in space and distribution and a locally integrable term independent of distribution, while the noise coefficient is weakly differentiable in space and Lipschitz continuous in distribution with respect to the sum of Wasserstein and weighted variation distances. The main results extend existing ones derived for noise coefficients either independent of distribution, or having nice linear functional derivatives in distribution. Singular reflecting SDEs with distribution dependent noise are also studied.

VirtualSync+: Timing Optimization with Virtual Synchronization

In digital circuit designs, sequential components such as flip-flops are used to synchronize signal propagations. Logic computations are aligned at and thus isolated by flip-flop stages. Although this fully synchronous style can reduce design efforts significantly, it may affect circuit performance negatively, because sequential components can only introduce delays into signal propagations but never accelerate them. In this paper, we propose a new timing model, VirtualSync+, in which signals, specially those along critical paths, are allowed to propagate through several sequential stages without flip-flops. Timing constraints are still satisfied at the boundary of the optimized circuit to maintain a consistent interface with existing designs. By removing clock-to-q delays and setup time requirements of flip-flops on critical paths, the performance of a circuit can be pushed even beyond the limit of traditional sequential designs. In addition, we further enhance the optimization with VirtualSync+ by fine-tuning with commercial design tools, e.g., Design Compiler from Synopsys, to achieve more accurate result. Experimental results demonstrate that circuit performance can be improved by up to 4% (average 1.5%) compared with that after extreme retiming and sizing, while the increase of area is still negligible. This timing performance is enhanced beyond the limit of traditional sequential designs. It also demonstrates that compared with those after retiming and sizing, the circuits with VirtualSync+ can achieve better timing performance under the same area cost or smaller area cost under the same clock period, respectively.

Emergence of Kinematic Space from Quantum Modular Geometric Tensor

We generalize the Quantum Geometric Tensor by replacing a Hamiltonian with a modular Hamiltonian. The symmetric part of the Quantum Geometric Tensor provides a Fubini-Study metric, and its anti-symmetric sector gives a Berry curvature. Now the generalization or Quantum Modular Geometric Tensor gives a Kinematic Space and a modular Berry curvature. Here we demonstrate the emergence by focusing on a spherical entangling surface. We also use the result of the identity Virasoro block to relate the connected correlator of two Wilson lines to the two-point function of a modular Hamiltonian. This result realizes a novel holographic entanglement formula for two intervals of a general separation. This formula does not only hold for a classical gravity sector but also Quantum Gravity. The formula also provides a new Quantum Information interpretation to the connected correlators of Wilson lines as the mutual information. Our study provides an opportunity to explore Quantum Kinematic Space through Quantum Modular Geometric Tensor and hence go beyond symmetry.

1.28 and 5.12 Gbps multi-channel twinax cable receiver ASICs for the ATLAS Inner Tracker Pixel Detector Upgrade

We present two prototypes of a gigabit transceiver ASIC, GBCR1 and GBCR2, both designed in a 65-nm CMOS technology for the ATLAS Inner Tracker Pixel Detector readout upgrade. The first prototype, GBCR1, has four upstream receiver channels and one downstream transmitter channel with pre-emphasis. Each upstream channel receives the data at 5.12 Gbps through a 5 meter AWG34 Twinax cable from an ASIC driver located on the pixel module and restores the signal from the high frequency loss due to the low mass cable. The signal is retimed by a recovered clock before it is sent to the optical transmitter VTRx+. The downstream driver is designed to transmit the 2.56 Gbps signal from lpGBT to the electronics on the pixel module over the same cable. The peak-peak jitter (throughout the paper jitter is always peak-peak unless specified) of the restored signal is 35.4 ps at the output of GBCR1, and 138 ps for the downstream channel at the cable ends. GBCR1 consumes 318 mW and is tested. The second prototype, GBCR2, has seven upstream channels and two downstream channels. Each upstream channel works at 1.28 Gbps to recover the data directly from the RD53B ASIC through a 1 meter custom FLEX cable followed by a 6 meter AWG34 Twinax cable. The equalized signal of each upstream channel is retimed by an input 1.28 GHz phase programmable clock. Compared with the signal at the FLEX input, the additional jitter of the equalized signal is about 80 ps when the retiming logic is o . When the retiming logic is on, the jitter is 50 ps at GBCR2 output, assuming the 1.28 GHz retiming clock is from lpGBT. The downstream is designed to transmit the 160 Mbps signal from lpGBT through the same cable connection to RD53B and the jitter is about 157 ps at the cable ends. GBCR2 consumes about 150 mW when the retiming logic is on. This design was submitted in November 2019.

A note on the kinematic space associated with a subregion

We discuss the issue in constructing the kinematic space of the geodesics lying partially inside the entanglement wedge associated with a single interval. We then resolve the problem by working with the equivalent kinematic space of the reflected geodesics. We also show that the length of a reflected geodesic corresponds to the (generalized) reflected entropy, which can be computed using entirely the information obtained from the reduced density matrix, satisfying the requirement of the subregion-subregion duality.

Analysis of the Entanglement with Centers

We begin from the quantization algebras and constraint for analyzing the choice of centers in the first-order formulation without losing generality. Then we calculate the entanglement entropy in the non-interacting $p$-form theory in $2p+2$ dimensional Euclidean flat background with an $S^{2p}$ entangling surface. The universal term of the entanglement entropy in the non-interacting $p$-form theory is determined in terms of the universal terms of the non-interacting zero-form theory. We also prove the strong subadditivity in the non-interacting theory with the non-trivial centers. Finally, we calculate the mutual information with centers in two-dimensional conformal field theory. The result shows that the mutual information is independent of the choice of centers.

Atomic spin-wave control and spin-dependent kicks with shaped subnanosecond pulses

The absorption of traveling photons resonant with electric dipole transitions of an atomic gas naturally leads to electric dipole spin wave excitations. For a number of applications, it would be highly desirable to shape and coherently control the spatial waveform of the spin waves before spontaneous emission can occur. This paper details a recently developed optical control technique to achieve this goal, where counter-propagating, shaped sub-nanosecond pulses impart sub-wavelength geometric phases to the spin waves by cyclically driving an auxiliary transition. In particular, we apply this technique to reversibly shift the wave vector of a spin wave on the $D2$ line of laser-cooled $^{87}$Rb atoms, by driving an auxiliary $D1$ transition with shape-optimized pulses, so as to shut off and recall superradiance on demand. We investigate a spin-dependent momentum transfer during the spin-wave control process, which leads to a transient optical force as large as $\sim 1\hbar k$/ns, and study the limitations to the achieved $70\sim 75\%$ spin wave control efficiency by jointly characterizing the spin-wave control and matterwave acceleration. Aided by numerical modeling, we project potential future improvements of the control fidelity to the $99\%$ level when the atomic states are better prepared and by equipping a faster and more powerful pulse shaper. Our technique also enables a background-free measurement of the superradiant emission to unveil the precise scaling of the emission intensity and decay rate with optical depth.

Convergence rate of EM algorithm for SDEs under integrability condition

In this paper, by employing Gaussian type estimate of heat kernel, we establish Krylov's estimate and Khasminskill's estimate for EM algorithm. As applications, by taking Zvonkin's transformation into account, we investigate convergence rate of EM algorithm for a class of multidimensional SDEs under integrability conditions, where the drifts need not to be piecewise Lipschitz and are much more singular in some sense.

Derivative Estimates on Distributions of McKean-Vlasov SDEs

By using the heat kernel parameter expansion with respect to the frozen SDEs, the intrinsic derivative is estimated for the law of Mckean-Vlasov SDEs with respect to the initial distribution. As an application, the total variation distance between the laws of two solutions is bounded by the Wasserstein distance for initial distributions. These extend some recent results proved for distribution-free noise by using the coupling method and Malliavin calculus.

Harnack Inequality and Gradient Estimate for $G$-SDEs with Degenerate Noise

In this paper, the Harnack inequalities for $G$-SDEs with degenerate noise are derived by method of coupling by change of measure. Moreover, the gradient estimate for the associated nonlinear semigroup $\bar{P}_t$ $$|\nabla \bar{P}_t f|\leq c(p,t)(\bar{P}_t |f|^p)^{\frac{1}{p}}, \ \ p>1, t>0$$ is also obtained for bounded and continuous function $f$. As an application of Harnack inequality, we prove the weak existence of degenerate $G$-SDEs under some integrable conditions. Finally, an example is presented. All of the above results extends the existed results in the linear expectation setting.

McKean-Vlasov SDEs with Drifts Discontinuous under Wasserstein Distance

Existence and uniqueness are proved for Mckean-Vlasov type distribution dependent SDEs with singular drifts satisfying an integrability condition in space variable and the Lipschitz condition in distribution variable with respect to $W_0$ or $W_0+W_θ$ for some $θ\ge 1$, where $W_0$ is the total variation distance and $W_θ$ is the $L^θ$-Wasserstein distance. This improves some existing results where the drift is either locally bounded in the space variable or continuous in the distribution variable with respect to the Wasserstein distance.

Nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations for Probability Measures on Path Space and Path-Distribution Dependent SDEs

By investigating path-distribution dependent stochastic differential equations, the following type of nonlinear Fokker--Planck equations for probability measures $(μ_t)_{t \geq 0}$ on the path space $\mathcal C:=C([-r_0,0];\mathbb R^d),$ is analyzed: $$\partial_t μ(t)=L_{t,μ_t}^*μ_t,\ \ t\ge 0,$$ where $μ(t)$ is the image of $μ_t$ under the projection $\mathcal C\niξ\mapsto ξ(0)\in\mathbb R^d$, and $$L_{t,μ}(ξ):= \frac 1 2\sum_{i,j=1}^d a_{ij}(t,ξ,μ)\frac{\partial^2} {\partial_{ξ(0)_i} \partial_{ξ(0)_j}} +\sum_{i=1}^d b_i(t,ξ,μ)\frac{\partial}{\partial_{ξ(0)_i}},\ \ t\ge 0, ξ\in \mathcal C, μ\in \mathcal P^{\mathcal C}.$$ Under reasonable conditions on the coefficients $a_{ij}$ and $b_i$, the existence, uniqueness, Lipschitz continuity in Wasserstein distance, total variational norm and entropy, as well as derivative estimates are derived for the martingale solutions.

Precise pulse shaping for quantum control of strong optical transitions

Advances of quantum control technology have led to nearly perfect single-qubit control of nuclear spins and atomic hyperfine ground states. In contrast, quantum control of strong optical transitions, even for free atoms, are far from being perfect. Developments of such quantum control appears to be bottlenecked by available laser technology for generating isolated, sub-nanosecond optical waveforms with sub-THz programming bandwidth. Here we propose a simple and robust method for the desired pulse shaping, based on precisely stacking multiple delayed picosecond pulses. Our proof-of-principal demonstration leads to arbitrarily shapeable optical waveforms with 30~GHz bandwidth and $100~$ps duration. We confirm the stability of the waveforms by interfacing the pulses with laser-cooled atoms, resulting in ``super-resolved'' spectroscopic signals. This pulse shaping method may open exciting perspectives in quantum optics, and for fast laser cooling and atom interferometry with mode-locked lasers.

Quantum Correction of the Wilson Line and Entanglement Entropy in the Pure AdS$_3$ Einstein Gravity Theory

We calculate the expectation value of the Wilson line in the pure AdS$_3$ Einstein gravity theory and also the entanglement entropy in the boundary theory. Our one-loop calculation of entanglement entropy shows a shift of the central charge 26. Finally, we show that the Wilson line provides the equivalent description to the boundary entanglement entropy. This equivalence leads to a concrete example of the building of "minimum surface=entanglement entropy".

The Analog Front-end for the LGAD Based Precision Timing Application in CMS ETL

The analog front-end for the Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) based precision timing application in the CMS Endcap Timing Layer (ETL) has been prototyped in a 65 nm CMOS mini-ASIC named ETROC0. Serving as the very first prototype of ETL readout chip (ETROC), ETROC0 aims to study and demonstrate the performance of the analog frontend, with the goal to achieve 40 to 50 ps time resolution per hit with LGAD (therefore reach about 30ps per track with two detector-layer hits per track). ETROC0 consists of preamplifier and discriminator stages, which amplifies the LGAD signal and generates digital pulses containing time of arrival and time over threshold information. This paper will focus on the design considerations that lead to the ETROC front-end architecture choice, the key design features of the building blocks, the methodology of using the LGAD simulation data to evaluate and optimize the front-end design. The ETROC0 prototype chips have been extensively tested using charge injection and the measured performance agrees well with simulation. The initial beam test results are also presented, with time resolution of around 33 ps observed from the preamplifier waveform analysis and around 41 ps from the discriminator pulses analysis. A subset of ETROC0 chips have also been tested to a total ionizing dose of 100 MRad with X-ray and no performance degradation been observed.

Well-posedness and Regularity for Distribution Dependent SPDEs with Singular Drifts

In this paper, the distribution dependent stochastic differential equation in a separable Hilbert space with a Dini continuous drift is investigated. The existence and uniqueness of weak and strong solutions are obtained. Moreover, some regularity results as well as gradient estimates and log-Harnack inequality are derived for the associated semigroup. In addition, dimensional free Harnack inequality with power and shift Harnack inequality are also proved when the noise is additive. All of the results extend the ones in the distribution independent situation.

Holographic Complexity from the Crofton's Formula in Lorentzian AdS$_3$

We study the Crofton's formula in the Lorentzian AdS$_3$ and find that the area of a generic space-like two dimensional surface is given by the flux of space-like geodesics. The "complexity=volume" conjecture then implies a new holographic representation of the complexity in terms of the number of geodesics. Finally, we explore the possible explanation of this result from the standpoint of information theory.

750 GeV diphotons from closed string states

We show that low-mass-scale string compactifications, with a generic D-brane configuration that realizes the standard model by open strings, can explain the relatively broad peak in the diphoton invariant mass spectrum at 750 GeV recently reported by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. Under reasonable assumptions, we demonstrate that the excess could originate from a closed string (possibly axionic) excitation φthat has a coupling with gauge kinetic terms. We estimate the φproduction rate from photon-photon fusion in elastic pp scattering, using the effective photon and narrow width approximations. For string scales above todays lower limit M_s \approx 7 TeV, we can accommodate the diphoton rate observed at Run II while maintaining consistency with Run I data.

Constraints on 750 GeV colorless Q-onia from running couplings

We present yet another composite model explaining the relatively broad peak in the diphoton invariant mass distribution around 750 GeV recently observed at the LHC experiments. We consider the excess originates in bound states of vector-like fermions Q transforming under the electroweak group (but not QCD) of the standard model and which are also charged under a new SU(N_{TC}) QCD-like confining force. Since the new uncolored fields transform as SU(2) doublets they can acquire a mass through Yukawa interactions with the electroweak Higgs doublet, as quarks and leptons. We parametrize the Q-onium bound state using the Coulomb approximation and give a numerical fit to the diphoton excess consistent with no strong coupling effects up to about 30 TeV, which is the energy scale for next generation colliders. The range of allowed hypercharge Y_Q is given by 2.26 \leq Y_Q \leq 2.53 for N_{\rm TC} =2 and 2.17 \leq Y_Q \leq 2.31 for N_{\rm TC} = 3. The smoking gun for the model would be the discovery of Q-onia decaying into Higgs and Z-boson.

Convergence Rate of Euler-Maruyama Scheme for SDEs with Rough Coefficients

In this paper, we are concerned with convergence rate of Euler-Maruyama scheme for stochastic differential equations with rough coefficients. The key contributions lie in (i), by means of regularity of non-degenerate Kolmogrov equation, we investigate convergence rate of Euler-Maruyama scheme for a class of stochastic differential equations, which allow the drifts to be Dini-continuous and unbounded; (ii) by the aid of regularization properties of degenerate Kolmogrov equation, we discuss convergence rate of Euler-Maruyama scheme for a range of degenerate stochastic differential equations, where the drift is locally Hölder-Dini continuous of order $\frac{2}{3}$ with respect to the first component, and is merely Dini-continuous concerning the second component.

IceCube neutrinos, decaying dark matter, and the Hubble constant

Cosmological parameters deduced from the Planck measurements of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background are at some tension with direct astronomical measurements of various parameters at low redshifts. Very recently, it has been conjectured that this discrepancy can be reconciled if a certain fraction of dark matter is unstable and decays between recombination and the present epoch. Herein we show that if the superheavy relics have a branching into neutrinos B (X \to ν\bar ν) \sim 3 \times 10^{-9}, then this scenario can also accommodate the recently discovered extraterrestrial flux of neutrinos, relaxing the tension between IceCube results and Fermi LAT data. The model is fully predictive and can be confronted with future IceCube data. We demonstrate that in 10 years of observation IceCube will be able to distinguish the mono-energetic signal from X decay at the 3σlevel. In a few years of data taking with the upgraded IceCube-Gen2 enough statistics will be gathered to elucidate the dark matter--neutrino connection at the 5σlevel.

Update on 750 GeV diphotons from closed string states

Motivated by the recent update on LHC searches for narrow and broad resonances decaying into diphotons we reconsider the possibility that the observed peak in the invariant mass spectrum at M_{γγ} = 750 GeV originates from a closed string (possibly axionic) excitation φ(associated with low mass scale string theory) that has a coupling with gauge kinetic terms. We reevaluate the production of φby photon fusion to accommodate recent developments on additional contributions to relativistic light-light scattering. We also study the production of φvia gluon fusion. We show that for both a narrow and a broad resonance these two initial topologies can accommodate the excess of events, spanning a wide range of string mass scales 7 \alt M_s/TeV \alt 30 that are consistent with the experimental lower bound: M_s > 7 TeV, at 95% CL. We demonstrate that for the two production processes the LHC13 data is compatible with the lack of a diphoton excess in LHC8 data within \sim 1σ. We also show that if the resonance production is dominated by gluon fusion the null results on dijet searches at LHC8 further constrain the coupling strengths of φ, but without altering the range of possible string mass scales.

Entanglement renormalization and integral geometry

We revisit the applications of integral geometry in AdS$_3$ and argue that the metric of the kinematic space can be realized as the entanglement contour, which is defined as the additive entanglement density. From the renormalization of the entanglement contour, we can holographically understand the operations of disentangler and isometry in multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz. Furthermore, a renormalization group equation of the long-distance entanglement contour is then derived. We then generalize this integral geometric construction to higher dimensions and in particular demonstrate how it works in bulk space of homogeneity and isotropy.

Majorana dark matter through the Higgs portal under the vacuum stability lamppost

We study the vacuum stability of a minimal Higgs portal model in which the standard model (SM) particle spectrum is extended to include one complex scalar field and one Dirac fermion. These new fields are singlets under the SM gauge group and are charged under a global U(1) symmetry. Breaking of this U(1) symmetry results in a massless Goldstone boson, a massive CP-even scalar, and splits the Dirac fermion into two new mass-eigenstates, corresponding to Majorana fermions. The lightest Majorana fermion (w) is absolutely stable, providing a plausible dark matter (DM) candidate. We show that interactions between the Higgs sector and the lightest Majorana fermion which are strong enough to yield a thermal relic abundance consistent with observation can easily destabilize the electroweak vacuum or drive the theory into a non-perturbative regime at an energy scale well below the Planck mass. However, we also demonstrate that there is a region of the parameter space which develops a stable vacuum (up to the Planck scale), satisfies the relic abundance, and is in agreement with direct DM searches. Such an interesting region of the parameter space corresponds to DM masses 350 GeV \alt m_w \alt 1 TeV. The region of interest is within reach of second generation DM direct detection experiments.

OPE of the stress tensors and surface operators

We demonstrate that the divergent terms in the OPE of a stress tensor and a surface operator of general shape cannot be constructed only from local geometric data depending only on the shape of the surface. We verify this holographically at d=3 for Wilson line operators or equivalently the twist operator corresponding to computing the entanglement entropy using the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. We discuss possible implications of this result.

Stringy origin of diboson and dijet excesses at the LHC

Very recently, the ATLAS and CMS collaborations reported diboson and dijet excesses above standard model expectations in the invariant mass region of 1.8 -2.0 TeV. Interpreting the diboson excess of events in a model independent fashion suggests that the vector boson pair production searches are best described by WZ or ZZ topologies, because states decaying into W^+W^- pairs are strongly constrained by semileptonic searches. Under the assumption of a low string scale, we show that both the diboson and dijet excesses can be steered by an anomalous U(1) field with very small coupling to leptons. The Drell-Yan bounds are then readily avoided because of the leptophobic nature of the massive Z' gauge boson. The non-negligible decay into ZZ required to accommodate the data is a characteristic footprint of intersecting D-brane models, wherein the Landau-Yang theorem can be evaded by anomaly-induced operators involving a longitudinal Z. The model presented herein can be viewed purely field-theoretically, although it is particularly well motivated from string theory. Should the excesses become statistically significant at the LHC13, the associated Zγ topology would become a signature consistent only with a stringy origin.

N = 4 Super-Yang-Mills on Conic Space as Hologram of STU Topological Black Hole

We construct four-dimensional N=4 super-Yang-Mills theories on a conic sphere with various background R-symmetry gauge fields. We study free energy and supersymmetric Renyi entropy using heat kernel method as well as localization technique. We find that the universal contribution to the partition function in the free field limit is the same as that in the strong coupling limit, which implies that it may be protected by supersymmetry. Based on the fact that, the conic sphere can be conformally mapped to $S^1\times H^3$ and the R-symmetry background fields can be supported by the R-charges of black hole, we propose that the holographic dual of these theories are five-dimensional, supersymmetric STU topological black holes. We demonstrate perfect agreement between N=4 super-Yang-Mills theories in the planar limit and the STU topological black holes.

Reconciling BICEP2 and Planck results with right-handed Dirac neutrinos in the fundamental representation of grand unified E_6

The tensor-to-scalar ratio (r = 0.20^{+0.07}_{-0.05}) inferred from the excess B-mode power observed by the Background Imaging of Cosmic Extragalactic Polarization (BICEP2) experiment is almost twice as large as the 95% CL upper limits derived from temperature measurements of the WMAP (r<0.13) and Planck (r<0.11) space missions. Very recently, it was suggested that additional relativistic degrees of freedom beyond the three active neutrinos and photons can help to relieve this tension: the data favor an effective number of light neutrino species N_{eff} = 3.86 \pm 0.25. Since the BICEP2 ratio implies the energy scale of inflation (V_*^{1/4} \sim 2 \times 10^{16} GeV) is comparable to the grand unification scale, in this paper we investigate whether we can accommodate the required N_{eff} with three right-handed (partners of the left-handed standard model) neutrinos living in the fundamental representation of a grand unified exceptional E_6 group. We show that the superweak interactions of these Dirac states (through their coupling to a TeV-scale Z' gauge boson) lead to decoupling of right-handed neutrino just above the QCD cross over transition: 175 MeV < T_{ν_R}^{dec} < 250 MeV. For decoupling in this transition region, the contribution of the three right-handed neutrinos to N_{eff} is suppressed by heating of the left-handed neutrinos (and photons). Consistency (within 1σ) with the favored N_{eff} is achieved for 4.5 TeV < M_{Z'} < 7.5 TeV. The model is fully predictive and can be confronted with future data from LHC14.

String Resonances at Hadron Colliders

[Abridged] We consider extensions of the standard model based on open strings ending on D-branes. Assuming that the fundamental string mass scale M_s is in the TeV range and that the theory is weakly coupled, we discuss possible signals of string physics at the upcoming HL-LHC run (3000 fb^{-1}) with \sqrt{s} = 14 TeV, and at potential future pp colliders, HE-LHC and VLHC, operating at \sqrt{s} = 33 and 100 TeV, respectively. In such D-brane constructions, the dominant contributions to full-fledged string amplitudes for all the common QCD parton subprocesses leading to dijets and γ+ jet are completely independent of the details of compactification, and can be evaluated in a parameter-free manner. We make use of these amplitudes evaluated near the first (n=1) and second (n=2) resonant poles to determine the discovery potential for Regge excitations of the quark, the gluon, and the color singlet living on the QCD stack. We show that for string scales as large as 7.1 TeV (6.1 TeV), lowest massive Regge excitations are open to discovery at 5σin dijet (γ+ jet) HL-LHC data. We also show that for n=1, the dijet discovery potential at HE-LHC and VLHC exceedingly improves: up to 15 TeV and 41 TeV, respectively. To compute the signal-to-noise ratio for n=2 resonances, we first carry out a complete calculation of all relevant decay widths of the second massive level string states. We demonstrate that for string scales M_s <~ 10.5 TeV (M_s <~ 28 TeV), detection of n=2 Regge recurrences at HE-LHC (VLHC) would become the smoking gun for D-brane string compactifications. Our calculations have been performed using a semi-analytic parton model approach which is cross checked against an original software package. Three-Dimensional Superconformal Field Theory on Conic Space as Hologram of Charged Topological Black Hole

We construct three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric conformal field theories on conic spaces. Built upon the fact that the partition function depends solely on the Reeb vector of the Killing vector, we propose that holographic dual of these theories are four-dimensional, supersymmetric charged topological black holes. With the supersymmetry localization technique, we study conserved supercharges, free energy, and Renyi entropy. At planar large N limit, we demonstrate perfect agreement between the superconformal field theories and the supersymmetric charged topological black holes.

Vacuum Stability of Standard Model^{++}

The latest results of the ATLAS and CMS experiments point to a preferred narrow Higgs mass range (m_h \simeq 124 - 126 GeV) in which the effective potential of the Standard Model (SM) develops a vacuum instability at a scale 10^{9} -10^{11} GeV, with the precise scale depending on the precise value of the top quark mass and the strong coupling constant. Motivated by this experimental situation, we present here a detailed investigation about the stability of the SM^{++} vacuum, which is characterized by a simple extension of the SM obtained by adding to the scalar sector a complex SU(2) singlet that has the quantum numbers of the right-handed neutrino, H", and to the gauge sector an U(1) that is broken by the vacuum expectation value of H". We derive the complete set of renormalization group equations at one loop. We then pursue a numerical study of the system to determine the triviality and vacuum stability bounds, using a scan of 10^4 random set of points to fix the initial conditions. We show that, if there is no mixing in the scalar sector, the top Yukawa coupling drives the quartic Higgs coupling to negative values in the ultraviolet and, as for the SM, the effective potential develops an instability below the Planck scale. However, for a mixing angle -0.35 \alt α\alt -0.02 or 0.01 \alt α\alt 0.35, with the new scalar mass in the range 500 GeV \alt m_{h"} \alt 8 TeV, the SM^{++} ground state can be absolutely stable up to the Planck scale. These results are largely independent of TeV-scale free parameters in the model: the mass of the non-anomalous U(1) gauge boson and its branching fractions.

LHC Phenomenology and Cosmology of String-Inspired Intersecting D-Brane Models

We discuss the phenomenology and cosmology of a Standard-like Model inspired by string theory, in which the gauge fields are localized on D-branes wrapping certain compact cycles on an underlying geometry, whose intersection can give rise to chiral fermions. The energy scale associated with string physics is assumed to be near the Planck mass. To develop our program in the simplest way, we work within the construct of a minimal model with gauge-extended sector U (3)_B \times Sp (1)_L \times U (1)_{I_R} \times U (1)_L. The resulting U (1) content gauges the baryon number B, the lepton number L, and a third additional abelian charge I_R which acts as the third isospin component of an SU(2)_R. All mixing angles and gauge couplings are fixed by rotation of the U(1) gauge fields to a basis diagonal in hypercharge Y and in an anomaly free linear combination of I_R and B-L. The anomalous $Z'$ gauge boson obtains a string scale Stückelberg mass via a 4D version of the Green-Schwarz mechanism. To keep the realization of the Higgs mechanism minimal, we add an extra SU(2) singlet complex scalar, which acquires a VEV and gives a TeV-scale mass to the non-anomalous gauge boson Z". The model is fully predictive and can be confronted with dijet and dilepton data from LHC8 and, eventually, LHC14. We show that M_{Z"} \approx 3 - 4 TeV saturates current limits from the CMS and ATLAS collaborations. We also show that for M_{Z"} \alt 5 TeV, LHC14 will reach discovery sensitivity \agt 5σ. After that, we demostrate in all generality that Z" milli-weak interactions could play an important role in observational cosmology. Finally, we examine some phenomenological aspects of the supersymmetric extension of the D-brane construct.

Z'-gauge Bosons as Harbingers of Low Mass Strings

Massive Z'-gauge bosons act as excellent harbingers for string compactifications with a low string scale. In D-brane models they are associated to U(1) gauge symmetries that are either anomalous in four dimensions or exhibit a hidden higher dimensional anomaly. We discuss the possible signals of massive Z'-gauge bosons at hadron collider machines (Tevatron, LHC) in a minimal D-brane model consisting out of four stacks of D-branes. In this construction, there are two massive gauge bosons, which can be naturally associated with baryon number B and B-L (L being lepton number). Here baryon number is always anomalous in four dimensions, whereas the presence of a four-dimensional B-L anomaly depends on the U(1)-charges of the right handed neutrinos. In case B-L is anomaly free, a mass hierarchy between the two associated Z'-gauge bosons can be explained. In our phenomenological discussion about the possible discovery of massive Z'-gauge bosons, we take as a benchmark scenario the dijet plus W signal, recently observed by the CDF Collaboration at Tevatron. It reveals an excess in the dijet mass range 150 GeV/c^2, 4.1σbeyond SM expectations. We show that in the context of low-mass string theory this excess can be associated with the production and decay of a leptophobic Z', a singlet partner of SU(3) gluons coupled primarily to baryon number. Even if the CDF signal disappears, as indicated by the more recent D0 results, our analysis can still serve as the basis for future experimental search for massive Z'-gauge bosons in low string scale models. We provide the relevant cross sections for the production of Z'-gauge bosons in the TeV region, leading to predictions that are within reach of the present or the next LHC run.

Anomaly Puzzle, Curved-Spacetime Spinor Hamiltonian, and String Phenomenology

In the first part of this dissertation, we study two different aspects of string phenomenology. First we discuss the complementary signals of low mass superstrings at the proposed electron-positron facilities (ILC and CLIC), in e+e- and γ γ collisions. We examine all relevant four-particle amplitudes evaluated at the center of mass energies near the mass of lightest Regge excitations and extract the corresponding pole terms. Secondly, we consider string realizations of the Randall-Sundrum effective theory and explore the search for the lowest massive Regge excitation of the gluon and of the extra (color singlet) gauge boson inherent of D-brane constructions. We also study the ratio of dijet mass spectra at small and large scattering angles. We show that with the first fb-1 such a ratio can probe lowest-lying Regge states for masses ~3.0 TeV. Finally, we propose that the 3.2$σ$ excess at about $140 {\rm GeV}$ in the dijet mass spectrum of $W$ + jets reproted by the CDF Collaboration originates in the decay of a leptophobic $Z'$ that can be related to the U(1) symmetries inherent of D-brane models. In the remaining parts of this dissertation, we discuss several points that may help to clarify some questions that remain about the anomaly puzzle in N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and we investigate the issue that the Dirac Hamiltonian of a spin-1/2 particle in a curved background appears to be non-hermitian.

Searching for string resonances in e^+e^- and γγcollisions

If the fundamental mass scale of superstring theory is as low as few TeVs, the massive modes of vibrating strings, Regge excitations, will be copiously produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We discuss the complementary signals of low mass superstrings at the proposed electron-positron facility (CLIC), in e^+e^- and γγcollisions. We examine all relevant four-particle amplitudes evaluated at the center of mass energies near the mass of lightest Regge excitations and extract the corresponding pole terms. The Regge poles of all four-point amplitudes, in particular the spin content of the resonances, are completely model independent, universal properties of the entire landscape of string compactifications. We show that γγ\to e^+ e^- scattering proceeds only through a spin-2 Regge state. We estimate that for this particular channel, string scales as high as 4 TeV can be discovered at the 11σlevel with the first fb^{-1} of data collected at a center-of-mass energy \approx 5 TeV. We also show that for e^+e^- annihilation into fermion-antifermion pairs, string theory predicts the precise value, equal 1/3, of the relative weight of spin 2 and spin 1 contributions. This yields a dimuon angular distribution with a pronounced forward-backward asymmetry, which will help distinguishing between low mass strings and other beyond the standard model scenarios.

Stringy origin of Tevatron Wjj anomaly

The invariant mass distribution of dijets produced in association with W bosons, recently observed by the CDF Collaboration at Tevatron, reveals an excess in the dijet mass range 120-160 GeV/c^2, 3σbeyond Standard Model expectations. We show that such an excess is a generic feature of low mass string theory, due to the production and decay of a leptophobic Z', a singlet partner of SU(3) gluons coupled primarily to the U(1) baryon number. In this framework, U(1) and SU(3) appear as subgroups of U(3) associated with open strings ending on a stack of 3 D-branes. In addition, a minimal model contains two other stacks to accommodate the electro-weak SU(2) \in U(2) and the hypercharge U(1). Of the three U(1) gauge bosons, the two heavy Z' and Z" receive masses through the Green-Schwarz mechanism. For a given Z' mass, the model is quite constrained. Fine tuning three of its free parameters is just sufficient to simultaneously ensure: a small Z-Z' mixing in accord with the stringent LEP data on the $Z$ mass; very small (less than 1%) branching ratio into leptons; and a large hierarchy between Z" and Z' masses. The heavier neutral gauge boson Z" is within the reach of LHC.

Clarifying Some Remaining Questions in the Anomaly Puzzle

We discuss several points that may help to clarify some questions that remain about the anomaly puzzle in supersymmetric theories. In particular, we consider a general N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The anomaly puzzle concerns the question of whether there is a consistent way to put the R-current and the stress tensor in a single supercurrent, even though in the classical theory they are in the same supermultiplet. As is well known, the classically conserved supercurrent bifurcates into two supercurrents having different anomalies in the quantum regime. The most interesting result we obtain is an explicit expression for the lowest component of one of the two supercurrents in 4-dimensional spacetime, namely the supercurrent that has the energy-momentum tensor as one of its components. This expression for the lowest component is an energy-dependent linear combination of two chiral currents, which itself does not correspond to a classically conserved chiral current. The lowest component of the other supercurrent, namely, the R-current, satisfies the Adler-Bardeen theorem. The lowest component of the first supercurrent has an anomaly that we show is consistent with the anomaly of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. Therefore, we conclude that there is no consistent way to put the R-current and the stress tensor in a single supercurrent in the quantized theory. We also discuss and try to clarify some technical points in the derivations of the two-supercurrents in the literature. These latter points concern the significance of infrared contributions to the NSVZ beta-function and the role of the equations of motion in deriving the two supercurrents.

LHC Phenomenology of Lowest Massive Regge Recurrences in the Randall-Sundrum Orbifold

We consider string realizations of the Randall-Sundrum effective theory for electroweak symmetry breaking and explore the search for the lowest massive Regge excitation of the gluon and of the extra (color singlet) gauge boson inherent of D-brane constructions. In these curved backgrounds, the higher-spin Regge recurrences of Standard Model fields localized near the IR brane are warped down to close to the TeV range and hence can be produced at collider experiments. Assuming that the theory is weakly coupled, we make use of four gauge boson amplitudes evaluated near the first Regge pole to determine the discovery potential of LHC. We study the inclusive dijet mass spectrum in the central rapidity region |y_{jet}| < 1.0 for dijet masses M \geq 2.5 TeV. We find that with an integrated luminosity of 100 fb^{-1}, the 5σdiscovery reach can be as high as 4.7 TeV. Observations of resonant structures in pp \rightarrow direct γ+ jet can provide interesting corroboration for string physics up to 3.0 TeV. We also study the ratio of dijet mass spectra at small and large scattering angles. We show that with the first fb^{-1} such a ratio can probe lowest-lying Regge states for masses \sim 2.5 TeV.
