Distributionally Robust Game for Proof-of-Work Blockchain Mining Under Resource Uncertainties

Blockchain plays a crucial role in ensuring the security and integrity of decentralized systems, with the proof-of-work (PoW) mechanism being fundamental for achieving distributed consensus. As PoW blockchains see broader adoption, an increasingly diverse set of miners with varying computing capabilities participate in the network. In this paper, we consider the PoW blockchain mining, where the miners are associated with resource uncertainties. To characterize the uncertainty computing resources at different mining participants, we establish an ambiguous set representing uncertainty of resource distributions. Then, the networked mining is formulated as a non-cooperative game, where distributionally robust performance is calculated for each individual miner to tackle the resource uncertainties. We prove the existence of the equilibrium of the distributionally robust mining game. To derive the equilibrium, we propose the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR)-based reinterpretation of the best response of each miner. We then solve the individual strategy with alternating optimization, which facilitates the iteration among miners towards the game equilibrium. Furthermore, we consider the case that the ambiguity of resource distribution reduces to Gaussian distribution and the case that another uncertainties vanish, and then characterize the properties of the equilibrium therein along with a distributed algorithm to achieve the equilibrium. Simulation results show that the proposed approaches effectively converge to the equilibrium, and effectively tackle the uncertainties in blockchain mining to achieve a robust performance guarantee.

Filter-and-Attend: Wireless Channel Foundation Model with Noise-Plus-Interference Suppression Structure

Wireless channel foundation model (WCFM) is a task-agnostic AI model that is pre-trained to learn a universal channel representation for a wide range of communications and sensing tasks. While existing works on WCFM have demonstrated its great potentials in various downstream tasks, the models are all trained using perfect (i.e., error-free and complete) channel information state (CSI) data. In practical systems, however, only degraded CSI obtained from pilot-based channel estimation is accessible, leading to distorted channel representations and performance degradation in downstream tasks for some real-world environments with severe noise and interference. To address this issue, this paper proposes a new paradigm for WCFM, termed as Filter-and-Attend. In this paradigm, Filter refers to explicitly suppressing noise-plus-interference (NPI) in the received signals, while Attend means performing correlation-aware CSI completion and feature extraction using attention mechanism. Specifically, an enhanced WCFM architecture is developed. In this architecture, coarse estimates of the CSIs are first obtained and exploited to construct two projection matrices that extract NPI components in the received signals, which are further processed and removed by a subtraction module. The filtered signal is subsequently passed through a CSI completion network to get a clean CSI for feature extraction. Simulation results demonstrated that compared to the state-of-the-art solutions, WCFM with NPI suppression structure achieves improved performance on various downstream tasks including time-domain channel prediction, frequency-domain channel prediction, and localization.

Incentivizing Proof-of-Stake Blockchain for Secured Data Collection in UAV-Assisted IoT: A Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Approach

The Internet of Things (IoT) can be conveniently deployed while empowering various applications, where the IoT nodes can form clusters to finish certain missions collectively. In this paper, we propose to employ unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to assist the clustered IoT data collection with blockchain-based security provisioning. In particular, the UAVs generate candidate blocks based on the collected data, which are then audited through a lightweight proof-of-stake consensus mechanism within the UAV-based blockchain network. To motivate efficient blockchain while reducing the operational cost, a stake pool is constructed at the active UAV while encouraging stake investment from other UAVs with profit sharing. The problem is formulated to maximize the overall profit through the blockchain system in unit time by jointly investigating the IoT transmission, incentives through investment and profit sharing, and UAV deployment strategies. Then, the problem is solved in a distributed manner while being decoupled into two layers. The inner layer incorporates IoT transmission and incentive design, which are tackled with large-system approximation and one-leader-multi-follower Stackelberg game analysis, respectively. The outer layer for UAV deployment is undertaken with a multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient approach. Results show the convergence of the proposed learning process and the UAV deployment, and also demonstrated is the performance superiority of our proposal as compared with the baselines.

Mass Testing and Characterization of 20-inch PMTs for JUNO

Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3 % at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5,000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

JUNO Physics and Detector

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a 20 kton LS detector at 700-m underground. An excellent energy resolution and a large fiducial volume offer exciting opportunities for addressing many important topics in neutrino and astro-particle physics. With 6 years of data, the neutrino mass ordering can be determined at 3-4 sigma and three oscillation parameters can be measured to a precision of 0.6% or better by detecting reactor antineutrinos. With 10 years of data, DSNB could be observed at 3-sigma; a lower limit of the proton lifetime of 8.34e33 years (90% C.L.) can be set by searching for p->nu_bar K^+; detection of solar neutrinos would shed new light on the solar metallicity problem and examine the vacuum-matter transition region. A core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 IBD and ~2000 (300) all-flavor neutrino-proton (electron) scattering events. Geo-neutrinos can be detected with a rate of ~400 events/year. We also summarize the final design of the JUNO detector and the key R&D achievements. All 20-inch PMTs have been tested. The average photon detection efficiency is 28.9% for the 15,000 MCP PMTs and 28.1% for the 5,000 dynode PMTs, higher than the JUNO requirement of 27%. Together with the >20 m attenuation length of LS, we expect a yield of 1345 p.e. per MeV and an effective energy resolution of 3.02%/\sqrt{E (MeV)}$ in simulations. The underwater electronics is designed to have a loss rate <0.5% in 6 years. With degassing membranes and a micro-bubble system, the radon concentration in the 35-kton water pool could be lowered to <10 mBq/m^3. Acrylic panels of radiopurity <0.5 ppt U/Th are produced. The 20-kton LS will be purified onsite. Singles in the fiducial volume can be controlled to ~10 Hz. The JUNO experiment also features a double calorimeter system with 25,600 3-inch PMTs, a LS testing facility OSIRIS, and a near detector TAO.

Epitaxial Growth of $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ Coated Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Tape for Flexible UV Photodetector

The epitaxial growth of technically-important $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ semiconductor thin films have not been realized on flexible substrates due to limitations by the high-temperature crystallization conditions and the lattice-matching requirements. In this report, for the first time single crystal $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$(-201) thin films is epitaxially grown on the flexible CeO2 (001)-buffered hastelloy tape. The results indicate that CeO$_2$ (001) has a small bi-axial lattice mismatch with $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ (-201), thus inducing a simultaneous double-domain epitaxial growth. Flexible photodetectors are fabricated based on the epitaxial $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ coated tapes. Measurements show that the obtained photodetectors have a responsivity of 40 mA/W, with an on/off ratio reaching 1000 under 250 nm incident light and 5 V bias voltage. Such photoelectrical performance is already within the mainstream level of the $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ based photodetectors by using the conventional rigid single crystal substrates; and more importantly remained robust against more than 1000 cycles of bending tests. In addition, the epitaxy technique described in the report also paves the way for the fabrication of a wide range of flexible epitaxial film devices that utilize the materials with lattice parameters similar to $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$, including GaN, AlN and SiC.

Feasibility and physics potential of detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos at JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory~(JUNO) features a 20~kt multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator sphere as its main detector. Some of JUNO's features make it an excellent experiment for $^8$B solar neutrino measurements, such as its low-energy threshold, its high energy resolution compared to water Cherenkov detectors, and its much large target mass compared to previous liquid scintillator detectors. In this paper we present a comprehensive assessment of JUNO's potential for detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos via the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process. A reduced 2~MeV threshold on the recoil electron energy is found to be achievable assuming the intrinsic radioactive background $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th in the liquid scintillator can be controlled to 10$^{-17}$~g/g. With ten years of data taking, about 60,000 signal and 30,000 background events are expected. This large sample will enable an examination of the distortion of the recoil electron spectrum that is dominated by the neutrino flavor transformation in the dense solar matter, which will shed new light on the tension between the measured electron spectra and the predictions of the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework. If $Δm^{2}_{21}=4.8\times10^{-5}~(7.5\times10^{-5})$~eV$^{2}$, JUNO can provide evidence of neutrino oscillation in the Earth at the about 3$σ$~(2$σ$) level by measuring the non-zero signal rate variation with respect to the solar zenith angle. Moveover, JUNO can simultaneously measure $Δm^2_{21}$ using $^8$B solar neutrinos to a precision of 20\% or better depending on the central value and to sub-percent precision using reactor antineutrinos. A comparison of these two measurements from the same detector will help elucidate the current tension between the value of $Δm^2_{21}$ reported by solar neutrino experiments and the KamLAND experiment.

GrabAR: Occlusion-aware Grabbing Virtual Objects in AR

Existing augmented reality (AR) applications often ignore occlusion between real hands and virtual objects when incorporating virtual objects in our views. The challenges come from the lack of accurate depth and mismatch between real and virtual depth. This paper presents GrabAR, a new approach that directly predicts the real-and-virtual occlusion, and bypasses the depth acquisition and inference. Our goal is to enhance AR applications with interactions between hand (real) and grabbable objects (virtual). With paired images of hand and object as inputs, we formulate a neural network that learns to generate the occlusion mask. To train the network, we compile a synthetic dataset to pre-train it and a real dataset to fine-tune it, thus reducing the burden of manual labels and addressing the domain difference. Then, we embed the trained network in a prototyping AR system that supports hand grabbing of various virtual objects, demonstrate the system performance, both quantitatively and qualitatively, and showcase interaction scenarios, in which we can use bare hand to grab virtual objects and directly manipulate them.

Robust Magnetoelectric Effect in Decorated Graphene/In2Se3 Heterostructure

Magnetoelectric effect is a fundamental physics phenomenon that synergizes electric and magnetic degrees of freedom to generate distinct material responses like electrically tuned magnetism, which serves as a key foundation of the emerging field of spintronics. Here, we show by first-principles studies that ferroelectric (FE) polarization of an In2Se3 monolayer can modulate the magnetism of an adjacent transition-metal (TM) decorated graphene layer via an FE induced electronic transition. The TM nonbonding d-orbital shifts downward and hybridizes with carbon p states near the Fermi level, suppressing the magnetic moment, under one FE polarization, but on reversed FE polarization this TM d-orbital moves upward, restoring the original magnetic moment. This finding of robust magnetoelectric effect in TM decorated graphene/In2Se3 heterostructure offers powerful insights and a promising avenue for experimental exploration of FE controlled magnetism in 2D materials.

TAO Conceptual Design Report: A Precision Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum with Sub-percent Energy Resolution

The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO, also known as JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). A ton-level liquid scintillator detector will be placed at about 30 m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. The reactor antineutrino spectrum will be measured with sub-percent energy resolution, to provide a reference spectrum for future reactor neutrino experiments, and to provide a benchmark measurement to test nuclear databases. A spherical acrylic vessel containing 2.8 ton gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator will be viewed by 10 m^2 Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) of >50% photon detection efficiency with almost full coverage. The photoelectron yield is about 4500 per MeV, an order higher than any existing large-scale liquid scintillator detectors. The detector operates at -50 degree C to lower the dark noise of SiPMs to an acceptable level. The detector will measure about 2000 reactor antineutrinos per day, and is designed to be well shielded from cosmogenic backgrounds and ambient radioactivities to have about 10% background-to-signal ratio. The experiment is expected to start operation in 2022.

Reversible Gas Sensing by Ferroelectric Switch and 2D Molecule Multiferroics in In2Se3 Monolayer

Two-dimensional ferroelectrics are important quantum materials which have found novel application in nonvolatile memories, however, the effects of reversible polarization on chemical reactions and interaction with environments are rarely studied despite of its importance. Here, based on the first-principles calculations, we found distinct gas adsorption behaviors on the surfaces of ferroelectric In2Se3 layer and the reversible gas caption and release controlled by ferroelectric switch. We rationalize the novel phenomena to the synergistic effect of the different electrostatic potential and electron transfer induced by band alignments between frontier molecular orbitals of gas and band edge states of substrate. Excitingly, the adsorption of paramagnetic gas molecules such as NO and NO2 can induce surface magnetism, which is also sensitive to ferroelectric polarization direction of In2Se3, indicating the application of In2Se3 as threshold magnetic sensors or switcher. Furthermore, it is suggested two NO molecules prefer to ferromagnetically couple with each other, the Curie temperature is polarization dependent which can reach up to 50K, leading to the long-sought 2D molecule multiferroics. The ferroelectric controllable adsorption behavior and molecule multiferroic feature will find extensive application in gas caption, selective catalytic reduction and spintronic device.

A Low-Fluorine Solution with the F/Ba Mole Ratio of 2 for the Fabrication of YBCO Films

In the reported low-fluorine MOD-YBCO studies, the lowest F/Ba mole ratio of the precursor solution was 4.5. However, further lowering the F/Ba ratio is important according to the researches of YBCO thick film. On the other hand, the F/Ba ratio is necessary to be at least 2 for the full conversion of the Ba precursor to BaF_2 to avoid the formation of BaCO_3, which is detrimental to the superconducting performance. In this study, a novel solution with the F/Ba mole ratio of 2 was developed, in which the fluorine content was only about 10.3% of that used in the conventional TFA-MOD method. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transformed-infrared spectra(ATR-FT-IR) revealed that BaCO_3 was remarkably suppressed in the as-pyrolyzed film and eliminated at 700 Celsius degree. Thus YBCO films with a critical current density (J_c) over 5 MA cm^{-2} (77 K, 0 T, 200 nm thickness) could be obtained on LAO single crystal substrates. In-situ FT-IR spectra showed that no obvious fluorinated gaseous by-products were detected in the pyrolysis step, which indicated that all of the F atoms might remain in the film as fluorides. X-ray diffraction (XRD) θ/2θ-scan showed that BaF_2, but neither YF_3 nor CuF_2, was detected in the films quenched at 400 - 800 Celsius degree. The formation priority of BaF_2 over YF_3 and CuF_2 was interpreted by the chemical equilibrium of the potential reactions. Our study could enlarge the synthesis window of the precursor solution for MOD-YBCO fabrication and open a gate to study the fluorine content in the precursor solution continuously and systematically.

Leakage Tests of the Stainless Steel Vessels of the Antineutrino Detectors in the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment

The antineutrino detectors in the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment are liquid scintillator detectors designed to detect low energy particles from antineutrino interactions with high efficiency and low backgrounds. Since the antineutrino detector will be installed in a water Cherenkov cosmic ray veto detector and will run for 3 to 5 years, ensuring water tightness is critical to the successful operation of the antineutrino detectors. We choose a special method to seal the detector. Three leak checking methods have been employed to ensure the seal quality. This paper will describe the sealing method and leak testing results.

Quantum Transduction of Telecommunications-band Single Photons from a Quantum Dot by Frequency Upconversion

The ability to transduce non-classical states of light from one wavelength to another is a requirement for integrating disparate quantum systems that take advantage of telecommunications-band photons for optical fiber transmission of quantum information and near-visible, stationary systems for manipulation and storage. In addition, transducing a single-photon source at 1.3 μm to visible wavelengths for detection would be integral to linear optical quantum computation due to the challenges of detection in the near-infrared. Recently, transduction at single-photon power levels has been accomplished through frequency upconversion, but it has yet to be demonstrated for a true single-photon source. Here, we transduce the triggered single-photon emission of a semiconductor quantum dot at 1.3 μm to 710 nm with a total detection (internal conversion) efficiency of 21% (75%). We demonstrate that the 710 nm signal maintains the quantum character of the 1.3 μm signal, yielding a photon anti-bunched second-order intensity correlation, g^(2)(t), that shows the optical field is composed of single photons with g^(2)(0) = 0.165 < 0.5.

Simultaneous Wavelength Translation and Amplitude Modulation of Single Photons from a Quantum Dot

Hybrid quantum information devices that combine disparate physical systems interacting through photons offer the promise of combining low-loss telecommunications wavelength transmission with high fidelity visible wavelength storage and manipulation. The realization of such systems requires control over the waveform of single photons to achieve spectral and temporal matching. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the simultaneous wavelength translation and amplitude modulation of single photons generated by a quantum dot emitting near 1300 nm with an exponentially-decaying waveform (lifetime $\approx$1.5 ns). Quasi-phase-matched sum-frequency generation with a pulsed 1550 nm laser creates single photons at 710 nm with a controlled amplitude modulation at 350 ps timescales.

Classifying Network Data with Deep Kernel Machines

Inspired by a growing interest in analyzing network data, we study the problem of node classification on graphs, focusing on approaches based on kernel machines. Conventionally, kernel machines are linear classifiers in the implicit feature space. We argue that linear classification in the feature space of kernels commonly used for graphs is often not enough to produce good results. When this is the case, one naturally considers nonlinear classifiers in the feature space. We show that repeating this process produces something we call "deep kernel machines." We provide some examples where deep kernel machines can make a big difference in classification performance, and point out some connections to various recent literature on deep architectures in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Bragg-Grating Enhanced Narrow-Band Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion

We propose a new method to narrow the linewidth of entangled photons generated from spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC). An internal Bragg grating is incorporated onto a nonlinear optical crystal waveguide. We study theoretically the spectral characteristics of SPDC under two Bragg grating structures. We show that using the Bragg grating with a midway pi-phase shifter, it is a promising way to generate narrow-line entangled photons.
