On the geometry of K3 surfaces with finite automorphism group and no elliptic fibrations

Nikulin and Vinberg proved that there are only a finite number of lattices of rank $\geq 3$ that are the Néron-Severi group of projective K3 surfaces with a finite automorphism group. The aim of this paper is to provide a more geometric description of such K3 surfaces $X$, when these surfaces have moreover no elliptic fibrations. In that case we show that such K3 surface is either a quartic with special hyperplane sections or a double cover of the plane branched over a smooth sextic curve which has special tangencies properties with some lines, conics or cuspidal cubic curves. We then study the converse i.e. if the geometric description we obtained characterizes these surfaces. In $4$ cases the description is sufficient, in each of the $4$ other cases there is exactly another one possibility which we study. We obtain that at least 5 moduli spaces of K3 surfaces (among the 8 we study) are unirational.

Explicit Nikulin configurations on Kummer surfaces

A Nikulin configuration is the data of $16$ disjoint smooth rational curves on a K3 surface. According to results of Nikulin, the existence of a Nikulin configuration means that the K3 surface is a Kummer surface, moreover the abelian surface from the Kummer structure is determined by the $16$ curves. A classical question of Shioda is about the existence of non isomorphic Kummer structures on the same Kummer K3 surface. The question was studied by several authors, and it was shown that the number of non-isomorphic Kummer structures is finite, but no explicit geometric construction of such structures was given. In a previous paper, we constructed explicitly non isomorphic Kummer structures on some Kummer surfaces. In this paper we generalise the construction to Kummer surfaces with a weaker restriction on the degree of the polarization and we describe some cases where the previous construction does not work.

Lines on cubic hypersurfaces over finite fields

We show that smooth cubic hypersurfaces of dimension $n$ defined over a finite field ${\bf F}_q$ contain a line defined over ${\bf F}_q$ in each of the following cases: - $n=3$ and $q\ge 11$; - $n=4$ and $q\ne 3$; - $n\ge 5$. For a smooth cubic threefold $X$, the variety of lines contained in $X$ is a smooth projective surface $F(X)$ for which the Tate conjecture holds, and we obtain information about the Picard number of $F(X)$ and its 5-dimensional principally polarized Albanese variety $A(F(X))$.

The Bolza curve and some orbifold ball quotient surfaces

We study Deraux's non arithmetic orbifold ball quotient surfaces obtained as birational transformations of a quotient $X$ of a particular Abelian surface $A$. Using the fact that $A$ is the Jacobian of the Bolza genus $2$ curve, we identify $X$ as the weighted projective plane $\mathbb{P}(1,3,8)$. We compute the equation of the mirror $M$ of the orbifold ball quotient $(X,M)$ and by taking the quotient by an involution, we obtain an orbifold ball quotient surface with mirror birational to an interesting configuration of plane curves of degrees $1,2$ and $3$. We also exhibit an arrangement of four conics in the plane which provides the above-mentioned ball quotient orbifold surfaces.

A pair of rigid surfaces with $p_g=q=2$ and $K^2=8$ whose universal cover is not the bidisk

We construct two complex-conjugated rigid surfaces with $p_g=q=2$ and $K^2=8$ whose universal cover is not biholomorphic to the bidisk. We show that these are the unique surfaces with these invariants and Albanese map of degree $2$, apart the family of product-quotient surfaces constructed by Penegini. This completes the classification of surfaces with $p_g=q=2, K^2=8$ and Albanese map of degree $2$.

Bounded negativity, Miyaoka-Sakai inequality and elliptic curve configurations

Similarly to the linear Harbourne constant recently defined, we study the elliptic $H$-constants of $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ and Abelian surfaces. We exhibit configurations of smooth plane cubic curves whose Harbourne index is arbitrarily close to $-4$. As a Corollary, we obtain that the global $H$-constant of any surface $X$ is less or equal to $-4$. Related to these problems, we moreover give a new inequality for the number and multiplicities of singularities of elliptic curves arrangements on Abelian surfaces, inequality which has a close similarity to the one of Hirzebruch for arrangements of lines in the plane.

Chern slopes of simply connected complex surfaces of general type are dense in [2,3]

We prove that for any number $r$ in $[2,3]$, there are spin (resp. non-spin minimal) simply connected complex surfaces of general type $X$ with $c_1^2(X)/c_2(X)$ arbitrarily close to $r$. In particular, this shows the existence of simply connected surfaces of general type arbitrarily close to the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau line. In addition, we prove that for any $r \in [1,3]$ and any integer $q\geq 0$, there are minimal complex surfaces of general type $X$ with $c_1^2(X)/c_2(X)$ arbitrarily close to $r$, and $π_1(X)$ isomorphic to the fundamental group of a compact Riemann surface of genus $q$.

Involutions of second kind on Shimura surfaces and surfaces of general type with $q=p_g=0$

Quaternionic Shimura surfaces are quotient of the bidisc by an irreducible cocompact arithmetic group. In the present paper we are interested in (smooth) quaternionic Shimura surfaces admitting an automorphism with one dimensional fixed locus; such automorphisms are involutions. We propose a new construction of surfaces of general type with $q=p_{g}=0$ as quotients of quaternionic Shimura surfaces by such involutions. These quotients have finite fundamental group.

On finiteness of curves with high canonical degree on a surface

The \emph{canonical degree} of a curve $C$ on a surface $X$ is $K_X\cdot C$. Our main result, is that on a surface of general type there are only finitely many curves with negative self--intersection and sufficiently large canonical degree. Our proof strongly relies on results by Miyaoka. We extend our result both to surfaces not of general type and to non--negative curves, and give applications, e.g. to finiteness of negative curves on a general blow--up of $\mathbb P^ 2$ at $n\geq 10$ general points (a result related to \emph{Nagata's Conjecture}). We finally discuss a conjecture by Vojta concerning the asymptotic behaviour of the ratio between the canonical degree and the geometric genus of a curve varying on a surface. The results in this paper go in the direction of understanding the \emph{bounded negativity} problem.

On the cohomology of Stover Surface

We study a surface discovered by Stover which is the surface with minimal Euler number and maximal automorphism group among smooth arithmetic ball quotient surfaces. We study the natural map $\wedge^{2}H^{1}(S,\mathbb{C})\to H^{2}(S,\mathbb{C})$ and we discuss the problem related to the so-called Lagrangian surfaces. We obtain that this surface $S$ has maximal Picard number and has no higher genus fibrations. We compute that its Albanese variety $A$ is isomorphic to $(\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Z}[α])^{7}$, for $α=e^{2iπ/3}$.

Automorphisms and quotients of quaternionic fake quadrics

A fake quadric is a smooth minimal surface of general type with the same invariants as the quadric in P^3, i.e. K^2=2c_2=8 and q=p_g=0. We study here quaternionic fake quadrics i.e. fake quadrics constructed arithmetically by using some quaternion algebras over real number fields. We provide examples of quaternionic fake quadrics X with a non-trivial automorphism group and compute the invariants of the minimal desingularisation of the quotient of X by this group. In that way we obtain minimal surfaces of general type Z with q=p_g=0 and K^2=4,2 which contain the maximal number of disjoint nodal curves. We then prove that if a surface of general type has the same invariant as Z and same number of nodal curves, we can construct geometrically a surface of general type with K^2=2c_2=8.

On the PSL(2,19)-invariant cubic sevenfold

It has been proved by Adler that there exists a unique cubic hypersurface X in P^8 which is invariant under the action of the simple group PSL(2,19). In the present note we study the intermediate Jacobian of X and in particular we prove that the subjacent 85-dimensional torus is an Abelian variety. The symmetry group G=PSL(2,19) defines uniquely a G-invariant abelian 9-fold A(X), which we study in detail and describe its period lattice.

On the hyperbolicity of surfaces of general type with small $c_1 ^2$

Surfaces of general type with positive second Segre number $s_2:=c_1^2-c_2>0$ are known by results of Bogomolov to be quasi-hyperbolic i.e. with finitely many rational and elliptic curves. These results were extended by McQuillan in his proof of the Green-Griffiths conjecture for entire curves on such surfaces. In this work, we study hyperbolic properties of minimal surfaces of general type with minimal $c_1^2$, known as Horikawa surfaces. In principle these surfaces should be the most difficult case for the above conjecture as illustrate the quintic surfaces in $\bP^3$. Using orbifold techniques, we exhibit infinitely many irreducible components of the moduli of Horikawa surfaces whose very generic member has no rational curves or even is algebraically hyperbolic. Moreover, we construct explicit examples of algebraically hyperbolic and (quasi-)hyperbolic orbifold Horikawa surfaces.

Elliptic curve configurations on Fano surfaces

The elliptic curves on a surface of general type constitute an obstruction for the cotangent sheaf to be ample. In this paper, we give the classification of the configurations of the elliptic curves on the Fano surface of a smooth cubic threefold. That means that we give the number of such curves, their intersections and a plane model. This classification is linked to the classification of the automorphism groups of theses surfaces.

Genus 2 curve configurations on Fano surfaces

We study the configurations of genus 2 curves on the Fano surfaces of cubic threefolds. We establish a link between some involutive automorphisms acting on such a surface S and genus 2 curves on S. We give a partial classification of the Fano surfaces according to the automorphism group generated by these involutions and determine the configurations of their genus 2 curves. We study the Fano surface of the Klein cubic threefold for which the 55 genus 2 curves generate a rank 25=h^{1,1} index 2 subgroup of the Néron-Severi group.

The Fano surface of the Klein cubic threefold

We prove that the Klein cubic threefold $F$ is the only smooth cubic threefold which has an automorphism of order 11. We compute the period lattice of the intermediate Jacobian of $F$ and study its Fano surface $S$. We compute also the set of fibrations of $S$ onto a curve of positive genus and the intersection between the fibres of these fibrations. These fibres generate an index 2 sub-group of the Néron-Severi group and we obtain a set of generators of this group. The Néron-Severi group of $S$ has rank $25=h^{1,1}$ and discriminant $11^{10}$.

L'application cotangente des surfaces de type general

We study surfaces of general type $S$ whose cotangent sheaf is generated by its global sections. We define a map called the cotangent map of $S$ that enables us to understand the obstructions to the ampleness of the cotangent sheaf of $S$. These obstructions are curves on $S$ that we call "non-ample". We classify surfaces with an infinite number of non-ample curves and we partly classify the non-ample curves.
