Irregularities of special C-pairs

This paper studies irregularity-type invariants of special C-pairs, or "geometric orbifolds" in the sense of Campana. Under mild assumptions on the singularities, we show that the augmented irregularity of a C-pair (X,D) is bounded by its dimension. This generalizes earlier results of Campana, and strengthens known results even in the classic case where X is a projective manifold and D = 0. The proof builds on new extension results for adapted forms, analysis of foliations on Albanese varieties, and constructions of Bogomolov sheaves using strict wedge subspaces of adapted forms.

Orbifold Chern classes inequalities and applications

In this paper we prove that given a pair $(X,D)$ of a threefold $X$ and a boundary divisor $D$ with mild singularities, if $(K_X+D)$ is movable, then the orbifold second Chern class $c_2$ of $(X,D)$ is pseudo-effective. This generalizes the classical result of Miyaoka on the pseudo-effectivity of $c_2$ for minimal models. As an application we give a simple solution to Kawamata's effective non-vanishing conjecture in dimension $3$, where we prove that $H^0(X, K_X+H)\neq 0$, whenever $K_X+H$ is nef and $H$ is an ample, effective, reduced Cartier divisor. Furthermore, we study Lang-Vojta's conjecture for codimension one subvarieties and prove that minimal varieties of general type have only finitely many Fano, Calabi-Yau or Abelian subvarieties of codimension one, mildly singular, whose classes belong to the movable cone.

Hyperbolicity and Specialness of Symmetric Powers

Inspired by the computation of the Kodaira dimension of symmetric powers Xm of a complex projective variety X of dimension n $\ge$ 2 by Arapura and Archava, we study their analytic and algebraic hyperbolic properties. First we show that Xm is special if and only if X is special (except when the core of X is a curve). Then we construct dense entire curves in (suf-ficiently hig) symmetric powers of K3 surfaces and product of curves. We also give a criterion based on the positivity of jet differentials bundles that implies pseudo-hyperbolicity of symmetric powers. As an application, we obtain the Kobayashi hyperbolicity of symmetric powers of generic projective hypersur-faces of sufficiently high degree. On the algebraic side, we give a criterion implying that subvarieties of codimension $\le$ n -- 2 of symmetric powers are of general type. This applies in particular to varieties with ample cotangent bundles. Finally, based on a metric approach we study symmetric powers of ball quotients.

Orbifold hyperbolicity

We define and study jet bundles in the geometric orbifold category. We show that the usual arguments from the compact and the logarithmic settings do not all extend to this more general framework. This is illustrated by simple examples of orbifold pairs of general type that do not admit any global jet differential, even if some of these examples satisfy the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture. This contrasts with an important result of Demailly (2010) proving that compact varieties of general type always admit jet differentials. We illustrate the usefulness of the study of orbifold jets by establishing the hyperbolicity of some orbifold surfaces, that cannot be derived from the current techniques in Nevanlinna's theory. We also conjecture that Demailly's theorem should hold for orbifold pairs with smooth boundary divisors under a certain natural multiplicity condition, and provide some evidence towards it.

Quasi-positive orbifold cotangent bundles ; Pushing further an example by Junjiro Noguchi

In this work, we investigate the positivity of logarithmic and orbifold cotangent bundles along hyperplane arrangements in projective spaces. We show that a very interesting example given by Noguchi (as early as in 1986) can be pushed further to a very great extent. Key ingredients of our approach are the use of Fermat covers and the production of explicit global symmetric differentials. This allows us to obtain some new results in the vein of several classical results of the literature on hyperplane arrangements. These seem very natural using the modern point of view of augmented base loci, and working in Campana's orbifold category. As an application of our results, we derive two new orbifold hyperbolicity results, going beyond some classical results of value distribution theory.

Hyperbolicity, automorphic forms and Siegel modular varieties

We study the hyperbolicity of compactifications of quotients of bounded symmetric domains by arithmetic groups. We prove that, up to an étale cover, they are Kobayashi hyperbolic modulo the boundary. Applying our techniques to Siegel modular varieties, we improve some former results of Nadel on the non-existence of certain level structures on abelian varieties over complex function fields.

On the hyperbolicity of surfaces of general type with small $c_1 ^2$

Surfaces of general type with positive second Segre number $s_2:=c_1^2-c_2>0$ are known by results of Bogomolov to be quasi-hyperbolic i.e. with finitely many rational and elliptic curves. These results were extended by McQuillan in his proof of the Green-Griffiths conjecture for entire curves on such surfaces. In this work, we study hyperbolic properties of minimal surfaces of general type with minimal $c_1^2$, known as Horikawa surfaces. In principle these surfaces should be the most difficult case for the above conjecture as illustrate the quintic surfaces in $\bP^3$. Using orbifold techniques, we exhibit infinitely many irreducible components of the moduli of Horikawa surfaces whose very generic member has no rational curves or even is algebraically hyperbolic. Moreover, we construct explicit examples of algebraically hyperbolic and (quasi-)hyperbolic orbifold Horikawa surfaces.
