Double covers and extensions

In this paper we consider double covers of the projective space in relation with the problem of extensions of varieties, specifically of extensions of canonical curves to $K3$ surfaces and Fano 3-folds. In particular we consider $K3$ surfaces which are double covers of the plane branched over a general sextic: we prove that the general curve in the linear system pull back of plane curves of degree $k\geq 7$ lies on a unique $K3$ surface. If $k\leq 6$ the general such curve is instead extendable to a higher dimensional variety. In the cases $k=4,5,6$, this gives the existence of singular index $k$ Fano varieties of dimensions 8, 5, 3, and genera 17, 26, 37 respectively. For $k = 6$ we recover the Fano variety $\mathbf{P}(3, 1, 1, 1)$, one of only two Fano threefolds with canonical Gorenstein singularities with the maximal genus 37, found by Prokhorov. We show that the latter variety is no further extendable. For $k=4$ and $5$ these Fano varieties have been identified by Totaro. We also study the extensions of smooth degree 2 sections of $K3$ surfaces of genus 3. In all these cases, we compute the co-rank of the Gauss--Wahl maps of the curves under consideration. Finally we observe that linear systems on double covers of the projective plane provide superabundant logarithmic Severi varieties.

Elliptic curves, ACM bundles and Ulrich bundles on prime Fano threefolds

Let $X$ be any smooth prime Fano threefold of degree $2g-2$ in $\mathbb{P}^{g+1}$, with $g \in \{3,\ldots,10,12\}$. We prove that for any integer $d$ satisfying $\left\lfloor \frac{g+3}{2} \right\rfloor \leq d \leq g+3$ the Hilbert scheme parametrizing smooth irreducible elliptic curves of degree $d$ in $X$ is nonempty and has a component of dimension $d$, which is furthermore reduced except for the case when $(g,d)=(4,3)$ and $X$ is contained in a singular quadric. Consequently, we deduce that the moduli space of rank--two slope--stable $ACM$ bundles $\mathcal{F}_d$ on $X$ such that $\det(\mathcal{F}_d)=\mathcal{O}_X(1)$, $c_2(\mathcal{F}_d)\cdot \mathcal{O}_X(1)=d$ and $h^0(\mathcal{F}_d(-1))=0$ is nonempty and has a component of dimension $2d-g-2$, which is furthermore reduced except for the case when $(g,d)=(4,3)$ and $X$ is contained in a singular quadric. This completes the classification of rank-two $ACM$ bundles on prime Fano threefolds. Secondly, we prove that for every $h \in \mathbb{Z}^+$ the moduli space of stable Ulrich bundles $\mathcal{E}$ of rank $2h$ and determinant $\mathcal{O}_X(3h)$ on $X$ is nonempty and has a reduced component of dimension $h^2(g+3)+1$; this result is optimal in the sense that there are no other Ulrich bundles occurring on $X$. This in particular shows that any prime Fano threefold is Ulrich wild.

Homaloidal hypersurfaces and hypersurfaces with vanishing Hessian

We prove the existence of various families of irreducible homaloidal hypersurfaces in projective space $\mathbb P^ r$, for all $r\geq 3$. Some of these are families of homaloidal hypersurfaces whose degrees are arbitrarily large as compared to the dimension of the ambient projective space. The existence of such a family solves a question that has naturally arisen from the consideration of the classes of homaloidal hypersurfaces known so far. The result relies on a fine analysis of dual hypersurfaces to certain scroll surfaces. We also introduce an infinite family of determinantal homaloidal hypersurfaces based on a certain degeneration of a generic Hankel matrix. These examples fit non--classical versions of de Jonquières transformations. As a natural counterpoint, we broaden up aspects of the theory of Gordan--Noether hypersurfaces with vanishing Hessian determinant, bringing over some more precision to the present knowledge.

Ulrich bundles on a general blow--up of the plane

We prove that on $X_n$, the plane blown--up at $n$ general points, there are Ulrich line bundles with respect to a line bundle corresponding to curves of degree $m$ passing simply through the $n$ blown--up points, with $m\leq 2\sqrt{n}$ and such that the line bundle in question is very ample on $X_n$. We prove that the number of these Ulrich line bundles tends to infinity with $n$. We also prove the existence of slope--stable rank--$r$ Ulrich vector bundles on $X_n$, for $n\geq 2$ and any $r \geq 1$ and we compute the dimensions of their moduli spaces. These computations imply that $X_n$ is {Ulrich wild}.

On the infinitesimal Terracini lemma

In this paper we prove an infinitesimal version of the classical Terracini Lemma for 3--secant planes to a variety. Precisely we prove that if $X\subseteq \PP^r$ is an irreducible, non--degenerate, projective complex variety of dimension $n$ with $r\geq 3n+2$, such that the variety of osculating planes to curves in $X$ has the expected dimension $3n$ and for every $0$--dimensional, curvilinear scheme $γ$ of length 3 contained in $X$ the family of hyperplanes sections of $X$ which are singular along $γ$ has dimension larger that $r-3(n+1)$, then $X$ is $2$--secant defective.

The Hessian map

In this paper we study the Hessian map $h_{d,r}$ which associates to any hypersurface of degree $d$ in ${\mathbb P}^r$ its Hessian hypersurface. We study general properties of this map and we prove that: $h_{d,1}$ is birational onto its image if $d\geq 5$; we study in detail the maps $h_{3,1}$, $h_{4,1}$ and $h_{3,2}$; we study the restriction of the Hessian map to the locus of hypersurfaces of degree $d$ with Waring rank $r+2$ in ${\mathbb P}^r$, proving that this restriction is injective as soon as $r\geq 2$ and $d\geq 3$, which implies that $h_{3,3}$ is birational onto its image; we prove that the differential of the Hessian map is of maximal rank on the generic hypersurfaces of degree $d$ with Waring rank $r+2$ in ${\mathbb P}^r$, as soon as $r\geq 2$ and $d\geq 3$.

Contractible curves on a rational surface

In this paper we prove that if S is a smooth, irreducible, projective, rational, complex surface and D an effective, connected, reduced divisor on S, then the pair (S,D) is contractible if the log-Kodaira dimension of the pair is $-\infty$. More generally, we even prove that this contraction is possible without blowing up an assigned cluster of points on S. Using the theory of peeling, we are also able to give some information in the case D is not connected.

Gaps for geometric genera

We investigate the possible values for geometric genera of subvarieties in a smooth projective variety. Values which are not attained are called gaps. For curves on a very general surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$, the initial gap interval was found by Xu (see [7] in References), and the next one in our previous paper (see [4] in References), where also the finiteness of the set of gaps was established and an asymptotic upper bound of this set was found. In the present paper we extend some of these results to smooth projective varieties of arbitrary dimension using a different approach.

A few questions about curves on surfaces

In this note we address the following kind of question: let X be a smooth, irreducible, projective surface and D a divisor on X$satisfying some sort of positivity hypothesis, then is there some multiple of D depending only on X which is effective or movable? We describe some examples, discuss some conjectures and prove some results that suggest that the answer should in general be negative, unless one puts some really strong hypotheses either on D or on X.

Guido Castelnuovo's Last Higher Geometry Lectures (1922-23)

Here we present the transcription of the handwritten notes, carefully taken by an anonymous student, of the last lecture course taught by Guido Castelnuovo in 1922-23. The title of the course is "Curve algebriche piane e sghembe" ("Plane and space algebraic curves"): indeed, the language of both the original text and our brief introduction is Italian. The manuscript belongs to the legacy of Alfredo Franchetta (1916-2011) and the typesetting is due to Natascia Zangani. This edition is our modest contribution to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Guido Castelnuovo (1865-1952).

Cremona linearizations of some classical varieties

In this paper we present an effective method for linearizing rational varieties of codimension at least two under Cremona transformations, starting from a given parametrization. Using these linearizing Cremonas, we simplify the equations of secant and tangential varieties of some classical examples, including Veronese, Segre and Grassmann varieties. We end the paper by treating the special case of the Segre embedding of the n-fold product of projective spaces, where cumulant Cremonas, arising from algebraic statistics, appear as specific cases of our general construction.

Genera of curves on a very general surface in $P^3$

In this paper we consider the question of determining the geometric genera of irreducible curves lying on a very general surface $S$ of degree $d$ at least 5 in $\mathbb{P}^3$ (the cases $d \leqslant 4$ are well known). We introduce the set $Gaps(d)$ of all non-negative integers which are not realized as geometric genera of irreducible curves on $S$. We prove that $Gaps(d)$ is finite and, in particular, that $Gaps(5)= \{0,1,2\}$. The set $Gaps(d)$ is the union of finitely many disjoint and separated integer intervals. The first of them, according to a theorem of Xu, is $Gaps_0(d):=[0, \frac{d(d-3)}{2} - 3]$. We show that the next one is $Gaps_1(d):= [\frac{d^2-3d+4}{2}, d^2-2d-9]$ for all $d \geqslant 6$.

Limits of pluri-tangent planes to quartic surfaces

We describe, for various degenerations $S\to Δ$ of quartic $K3$ surfaces over the complex unit disk (e.g., to the union of four general planes, and to a general Kummer surface), the limits as $t\in Δ^*$ tends to 0 of the Severi varieties $V_δ(S_t)$, parametrizing irreducible $δ$-nodal plane sections of $S_t$. We give applications of this to (i) the counting of plane nodal curves through base points in special position, (ii) the irreducibility of Severi varieties of a general quartic surface, and (iii) the monodromy of the universal family of rational curves on quartic $K3$ surfaces.

On finiteness of curves with high canonical degree on a surface

The \emph{canonical degree} of a curve $C$ on a surface $X$ is $K_X\cdot C$. Our main result, is that on a surface of general type there are only finitely many curves with negative self--intersection and sufficiently large canonical degree. Our proof strongly relies on results by Miyaoka. We extend our result both to surfaces not of general type and to non--negative curves, and give applications, e.g. to finiteness of negative curves on a general blow--up of $\mathbb P^ 2$ at $n\geq 10$ general points (a result related to \emph{Nagata's Conjecture}). We finally discuss a conjecture by Vojta concerning the asymptotic behaviour of the ratio between the canonical degree and the geometric genus of a curve varying on a surface. The results in this paper go in the direction of understanding the \emph{bounded negativity} problem.

Abelian varieties in Brill--Noether loci

In this paper, improving on results of Abramovich- Harris and Debarre- Fahlaoui we give the full classification of curves C of genus g such that a Brill--Noether locus W^ s_d(C), strictly contained in the jacobian J(C) of C, contains a variety Z stable under translations by the elements of a positive dimensional abelian subvariety A contained in J(C) and such that dim(Z)=d-dim(A)-2s, i.e., the maximum possible for such a Z.

On $k$-gonal loci in Severi varieties on general $K3$ surfaces and rational curves on hyperkähler manifolds

In this paper we study the gonality of the normalizations of curves in the linear system $|H|$ of a general primitively polarized complex $K3$ surface $(S,H)$ of genus $p$. We prove two main results. First we give a necessary condition on $p, g, r, d$ for the existence of a curve in $ |H|$ with geometric genus $g$ whose normalization has a $g^ r_d$. Secondly we prove that for all numerical cases compatible with the above necessary condition, there is a family of \emph{nodal} curves in $|H|$ of genus $g$ carrying a $g^1_k$ and of dimension equal to the \emph{expected dimension} $\min\{2(k-1),g\}$. Relations with the Mori cone of the hyperkähler manifold $\Hilb^ k(S)$ are discussed.

On $k$-gonal loci in Severi varieties on general $K3$ surfaces and rational curves on hyperkähler manifolds (first version, superseded by arXiv:1204.4838)

In this paper we study the gonality of the normalizations of curves in the linear system $|H|$ of a general primitively polarized $K3$ surface $(S,H)$ of genus $p$. We prove two main results. First we give a necessary condition on $p, g, k$ for the existence of a curve in $|H|$ with geometric genus $g$ whose normalization has a $g^ 1_k$. Secondly we prove that for $p$ even and all numerical cases compatible with the above necessary condition, there is a family of \emph{nodal} curves $|H|$ with the given $g,k$ and of dimension equal to the \emph{expected dimension} $\min\{2(k-1),g\}$. For odd $p$ the result is only slightly less sharp. Relations with the Mori cone of the hyperkähler manifold $\Hilb^ k(S)$ and with conjectures by Hassett-Tschinkel and by Huybrechts-Sawon are discussed. This version is superseded by the new submission arXiv:1204.4838 where Theorem 0.1 is improved to include the missing case and the degeneration argument in its proof is made considerably simpler. Since the degeneration argument in the present version is of a different type, and may be useful for other purposes, we choose to keep this submission as well.

On the classification of OADP varieties

The main purpose of this paper is to show that OADP varieties stand at an important crossroad of various main streets in different disciplines like projective geometry, birational geometry and algebra. This is a good reason for studying and classifying them. Main specific results are: (a) the classification of all OADP surfaces (regardless to their smoothness); (b) the classification of a relevant class of normal OADP varieties of any dimension, which includes interesting examples like lagrangian grassmannians. Following [PR], the equivalence of the classification in (b) with the one of quadro-quadric Cremona transformations and of complex, unitary, cubic Jordan algebras are explained.

Scrolls and hyperbolicity

Using degeneration to scrolls, we give an easy proof of non-existence of curves of low genera on general surfaces in P3 of degree d >=5. We show, along the same lines, boundedness of families of curves of small enough genera on general surfaces in P3. We also show that there exist Kobayashi hyperbolic surfaces in P3 of degree d = 7 (a result so far unknown), and give a new construction of such surfaces of degree d = 6. Finally we provide some new lower bounds for geometric genera of surfaces lying on general hypersurfaces of degree 3d > 15 in P4.

On a theorem of Castelnuovo and applications to moduli

In this paper we prove a theorem stated by Castelnuovo which bounds the dimension of linear systems of plane curves in terms of two invariants, one of which is the genus of the curves in the system. Then we classify linear systems whose dimension belongs to certain intervals which naturally arise from Castelnuovo's theorem. Finally we make an application to the following moduli problem: what is the maximum number of moduli of curves of geometric genus $g$ varying in a linear system on a surface? It turns out that, for $g\ge 22$, the answer is $2g+1$, and it is attained by trigonal canonical curves varying on a balanced rational normal scroll.

Varieties with minimal secant degree and linear systems of maximal dimension on surfaces

In this paper we prove, using a refinement of Terracini's Lemma, a sharp lower bound for the degree of (higher) secant varieties to a given projective variety, which extends the well known lower bound for the degree of a variety in terms of its dimension and codimension in projective space. Moreover we study varieties for which the bound is attained proving some general properties related to tangential projections, e.g. these varieties are rational. In particular we completely classify surfaces (and curves) for which the bound is attained. It turns out that these surfaces enjoy some maximality properties for their embedding dimension in terms of their degree or sectional genus. This is related to classical beautiful results of Castelnuovo and Enriques that we revise here in terms of adjunction theory.
