A Novel Numerical Algorithms Optimization Method with Machine Learning Frameworks: Application on Real-time Plasmas Equilibrium Reconstruction in EXL-50U Spherical Torus

This work proposes for the first time a novel optimization method for numerical algorithms, which takes advantages of machine learning frameworks PyTorch and TensorRT, leveraging their modularity, low development threshold, and automatic tuning characteristics to achieve a real-time plasmas reconstruction algorithm called PTEFIT as an application in tokamak-based controlled fusion that combines performance, flexibility, and usability. The algorithm has been deployed and routinely operated on the EXL-50U spherical tokamak, with an average inference time of only 0.268ms per time slice at $129\times 129$ resolution, and has successfully driven feedback control of the maximum radial position of plasmas and isoflux control. We believe that its design philosophy has sufficient potential to accelerate development and optimization in GPU parallel computing, and is expected to be extended to other numerical algorithms.

Hybridization and Correlation between f- and d-orbital electrons in a valence fluctuating compound EuNi2P2

The interaction between localized f and itinerant conduction electrons is crucial in the electronic properties of heavy fermion and valence fluctuating compounds. Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of the archetypical valence fluctuating compound EuNi2P2 that hosts multiple f electrons. At low temperatures, we reveal the hybridization between Eu 4f and Ni 3d states, which contributes to the electron mass enhancement, consistent with the periodic Anderson model. With increasing temperature, interestingly, we observe opposite temperature evolution of electron spectral function above and below the Kondo coherence temperature near 110 K, which is in contrast to the monotonic valence change and beyond the expectation of the periodic Anderson model. We argue that both f-d hybridization and correlation are imperative in the electronic properties of EuNi2P2. Our results shed light on the understanding of novel properties, such as heavy fermion behaviors and valence fluctuation, of rare-earth transition-metal intermetallic compounds with multiple f electrons.

Robust Kagome Electronic Structure in Topological Quantum Magnets XMn6Sn6 (X = Dy, Tb, Gd, Y)

Crystal geometry can greatly influence the emergent properties of quantum materials. As an example, the kagome lattice is an ideal platform to study the rich interplay between topology, magnetism, and electronic correlation. In this work, combining high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab-initio calculation, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of XMn6Sn6 (X = Dy, Tb, Gd, Y) family compounds. We observe the Dirac fermion and the flat band arising from the magnetic kagome lattice of Mn atoms. Interestingly, the flat band locates in the same energy region in all compounds studied, regardless of their different magnetic ground states and 4f electronic configurations. These observations suggest a robust Mn magnetic kagome lattice across the XMn6Sn6 family, thus providing an ideal platform for the search and investigation on new emergent phenomena in magnetic topological materials.

High energy Coulomb-scattered electrons for relativistic particle beam diagnostics

A new system used for monitoring energetic Coulomb-scattered electrons as the main diagnostic for accurately aligning the electron and ion beams in the new Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) electron lenses is described in detail. The theory of electron scattering from relativistic ions is developed and applied to the design and implementation of the system used to achieve and maintain the alignment. Commissioning with gold and 3He beams is then described as well as the successful utilization of the new system during the 2015 RHIC polarized proton run. Systematic errors of the new method are then estimated. Finally, some possible future applications of Coulomb-scattered electrons for beam diagnostics are briefly discussed.

Six-dimensional weak-strong simulations of head-on beam-beam compensation in RHIC

To compensate the large beam-beam tune spread and beam-beam resonance driving terms in the polarized proton operation in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), we will introduce a low-energy DC electron beam into each ring to collide head-on with the opposing proton beam. The device to provide the electron beam is called an electron lens. In this article, using a 6-D weak-strong-beam-beam interaction simulation model, we investigate the effects of head-on beam-beam compensation with electron lenses on the proton beam dynamics in the RHIC 250 GeV polarized proton operation. This article is abridged from the published article [1].

Status of head-on beam-beam compensation in RHIC

In polarized proton operation, the performance of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is limited by the head-on beam-beam effect. To overcome this limitation, two electron lenses are under commissioning. We give an overview of head-on beam-beam compensation in general and in the specific design for RHIC, which is based on electron lenses. The status of installation and commissioning are presented along with plans for the future.
