An Enigmatic PeVatron in an Area around HII Region G35.6−-0.5

Identifying Galactic PeVatrons (PeV particle accelerators) from the ultra-high-energy (UHE, >100 TeV) γγ-ray sources plays a crucial role in revealing the origin of Galactic cosmic rays. The UHE source 1LHAASO J1857+0203u is suggested to be associated with HESS J1858+020, which may be attributed to the possible PeVatron candidate supernova remnant (SNR) G35.6−-0.4 or HII region G35.6−-0.5. We perform detailed analysis on the very-high-energy and UHE γγ-ray emissions towards this region with data from the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). 1LHAASO J1857+0203u is detected with a significance of 11.6σσ above 100 TeV, indicating the presence of a PeVatron. It has an extension of ∼0.18∘\sim 0.18^\circ with a power-law (PL) spectral index of ∼\sim2.5 in 1-25 TeV and a point-like emission with a PL spectral index of ∼\sim3.2 above 25 TeV. Using the archival CO and HI data, we identify some molecular and atomic clouds that may be associated with the TeV γγ-ray emissions. Our modelling indicates that the TeV γγ-ray emissions are unlikely to arise from the clouds illuminated by the protons that escaped from SNR G35.6−-0.4. In the scenario that HII region G35.6−-0.5 could accelerate particles to the UHE band, the observed GeV-TeV γγ-ray emission could be well explained by a hadronic model with a PL spectral index of ∼\sim2.0 and cutoff energy of ∼\sim450 TeV. However, an evolved pulsar wind nebula origin cannot be ruled out.

Constraining the Cosmic-ray Energy Based on Observations of Nearby Galaxy Clusters by LHAASO

Galaxy clusters act as reservoirs of high-energy cosmic rays (CRs). As CRs propagate through the intracluster medium, they generate diffuse γγ-rays detectable by arrays such as LHAASO. These γγ-rays result from proton-proton (pppp) collisions of very high-energy cosmic rays (VHECRs) or inverse Compton (IC) scattering of positron-electron pairs created by pγpγ interactions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). We analyzed diffuse γγ-ray emission from the Coma, Perseus, and Virgo clusters using LHAASO data. Diffuse emission was modeled as a disk of radius R500R_{500} for each cluster while accounting for point sources. No significant diffuse emission was detected, yielding 95\% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits on the γγ-ray flux: for WCDA (1-25~TeV) and KM2A (>25>25~TeV), less than (49.4,13.7,54.0)(49.4, 13.7, 54.0) and (1.34,1.14,0.40)×10−14(1.34, 1.14, 0.40) \times 10^{-14}~ph~cm−2^{-2}~s−1^{-1} for Coma, Perseus, and Virgo, respectively. The γγ-ray upper limits can be used to derive model-independent constraints on the integral energy of CRp above 10~TeV (corresponding to the LHAASO observational range >1>1~TeV under the pppp scenario) to be less than (1.96,0.59,0.08)×1061(1.96, 0.59, 0.08) \times 10^{61}~erg. The absence of detectable annuli/ring-like structures, indicative of cluster accretion or merging shocks, imposes further constraints on models in which the UHECRs are accelerated in the merging shocks of galaxy clusters.

Deep view of Composite SNR CTA1 with LHAASO in γγ-rays up to 300 TeV

The ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray source 1LHAASO J0007+7303u is positionally associated with the composite SNR CTA1 that is located at high Galactic Latitude b≈10.5∘b\approx 10.5^\circ. This provides a rare opportunity to spatially resolve the component of the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) and supernova remnant (SNR) at UHE. This paper conducted a dedicated data analysis of 1LHAASO J0007+7303u using the data collected from December 2019 to July 2023. This source is well detected with significances of 21σσ and 17σσ at 8−-100 TeV and >>100 TeV, respectively. The corresponding extensions are determined to be 0.23∘±^{\circ}\pm0.03∘^{\circ} and 0.17∘±^{\circ}\pm0.03∘^{\circ}. The emission is proposed to originate from the relativistic electrons and positrons accelerated within the PWN of PSR J0007+7303. The energy spectrum is well described by a power-law with an exponential cutoff function dN/dE=(42.4±4.1)(E20 TeV)−2.31±0.11exp⁡(−E110±25 TeV)dN/dE = (42.4\pm4.1)(\frac{E}{20\rm\ TeV})^{-2.31\pm0.11}\exp(-\frac{E}{110\pm25\rm\ TeV})  TeV−1 cm−2 s−1\rm\ TeV^{-1}\ cm^{-2}\ s^{-1}in the energy range from 8 TeV to 300 TeV, implying a steady-state parent electron spectrum dNe/dEe∝(Ee100 TeV)−3.13±0.16exp⁡[(−Ee373±70 TeV)2]dN_e/dE_e\propto (\frac{E_e}{100\rm\ TeV})^{-3.13\pm0.16}\exp[(\frac{-E_e}{373\pm70\rm\ TeV})^2] at energies above ≈50 TeV\approx 50 \rm\ TeV. The cutoff energy of the electron spectrum is roughly equal to the expected current maximum energy of particles accelerated at the PWN terminal shock. Combining the X-ray and gamma-ray emission, the current space-averaged magnetic field can be limited to ≈4.5 μG\approx 4.5\rm\ μG. To satisfy the multi-wavelength spectrum and the γγ-ray extensions, the transport of relativistic particles within the PWN is likely dominated by the advection process under the free-expansion phase assumption.

Energy calibration of LHAASO-KM2A using the cosmic ray Moon shadow

We present a precise measurement of the westward, rigidity-dependent shift of the Moon's shadow using three and a half years of cosmic-ray data collected by the Kilometer Square Array (KM2A) of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). These measurements enable us to calibrate the detector energy response in the range 20-260 TeV, with results showing excellent agreement with the response derived from Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the KM2A detector. We also measure a best-fit parameter ε=0.015±0.08ε= 0.015 \pm 0.08, corresponding to a 95% confidence interval of [-14%, +17%] for the energy-scale estimation. This result establishes the exceptional accuracy of the KM2A-MC in simulating the detector's response within this energy range.

Energy-Dependent Shifts of Medium-Scale Anisotropies in Very-High-Energy Cosmic Rays Observed by LHAASO-KM2A

Small deviations from isotropy in the arrival directions of Galactic cosmic rays serve as a unique probe of the local magnetic environment. In this Letter, we report observations of medium-scale anisotropies (MSA) at energies above 10 TeV using the LHAASO-KM2A array. Our analysis identifies four regions of excess and four regions of deficit, each spanning angular scales of approximately ten degrees. Crucially, we detect significant energy-dependent shifts in the centroids of two excess regions: Region B and the newly identified Region D~\mathrm{\widetilde{D}}. We also characterize the energy evolution of the fractional relative intensity across both excess and deficit regions. These findings imply that the observed anisotropies are shaped by the specific realization of the local turbulent magnetic field within the cosmic ray scattering length. Such energy-dependent behaviors impose strict constraints on local turbulence models and cosmic ray propagation theories.

Evidence for particle acceleration approaching PeV energies in the W51 complex

The γγ-ray emission from the W51 complex is widely acknowledged to be attributed to the interaction between the cosmic rays (CRs) accelerated by the shock of supernova remnant (SNR) W51C and the dense molecular clouds in the adjacent star-forming region, W51B. However, the maximum acceleration capability of W51C for CRs remains elusive. Based on observations conducted with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), we report a significant detection of γγ rays emanating from the W51 complex, with energies from 2 TeV to 200 TeV. The LHAASO measurements, for the first time, extend the γγ-ray emission from the W51 complex beyond 100 TeV and reveal a significant spectrum bending at tens of TeV. By combining the ``π0π^0-decay bump" featured data from Fermi-LAT, the broadband γγ-ray spectrum of the W51 region can be well-characterized by a simple pp-collision model. The observed spectral bending feature suggests an exponential cutoff at ∼400\sim400~TeV or a power-law break at ∼200\sim200~TeV in the CR proton spectrum, most likely providing the first evidence of SNRs serving as CR accelerators approaching the PeV regime. Additionally, two young star clusters within W51B could also be theoretically viable to produce the most energetic γγ rays observed by LHAASO. Our findings strongly support the presence of extreme CR accelerators within the W51 complex and provide new insights into the origin of Galactic CRs.

Evidence for the rare decay B+→Λˉpμ+μ−B^{+} \to \bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-}

A search for the rare decay B+→Λˉpμ+μ−B^{+} \to \bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-} is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of s=13\sqrt{s}= 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1^-1. An excess of events is found with respect to the background-only expectation, with a signal significance of 3.5 standard deviations, in the low invariant-mass region of m(Λˉp)<2.8m(\bar Λp)<2.8 GeV/c2c^2. The branching fraction is measured to be Blow(B+→Λˉpμ+μ−)=(1.70−0.56+0.65(stat)±0.17(syst)±0.14(ext))×10−8{\cal B}_{\rm low}({B^{+}}\to {\bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-}})=\left(1.70 ^{+0.65}_{-0.56}(\rm stat) \pm 0.17(\rm syst) \pm 0.14(\rm ext)\right) \times 10^{-8}, where the last uncertainty is due to external inputs on B(B+→J/ψΛˉp)×B(J/ψ→μ+μ−){\cal B}(B^+\to{J/ψ\bar Λp})\times {\cal B}({J/ψ}\to{μ^+μ^-}). With no significant signal observed in the high m(Λˉp)m(\bar Λp) region above 2.8 GeV/c2c^2, an upper limit is set to be Bhigh(B+→Λˉpμ+μ−)<2.8 (3.7)×10−9{\cal B}_{\rm high}(B^{+}\to {\bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-}})<2.8\,(3.7) \times 10^{-9} at the 90%90\% (95%95\%) confidence level.

Extended Very-High-Energy Gamma-Ray Emission Surrounding PSR J0622 + 3749 Observed by LHAASO-KM2A

We report the discovery of an extended very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray source around the location of the middle-aged (207.8 kyr) pulsar PSR J0622+3749 with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). The source is detected with a significance of 8.2σ8.2σ for E>25E>25~TeV assuming a Gaussian template. The best-fit location is (R.A., Dec.)=(95∘ ⁣.47±0∘ ⁣.11, 37∘ ⁣.92±0∘ ⁣.09)=(95^{\circ}\!.47\pm0^{\circ}\!.11,\,37^{\circ}\!.92 \pm0^{\circ}\!.09), and the extension is 0∘ ⁣.40±0∘ ⁣.070^{\circ}\!.40\pm0^{\circ}\!.07. The energy spectrum can be described by a power-law spectrum with an index of −2.92±0.17stat±0.02sys{-2.92 \pm 0.17_{\rm stat} \pm 0.02_{\rm sys} }. No clear extended multi-wavelength counterpart of the LHAASO source has been found from the radio to sub-TeV bands. The LHAASO observations are consistent with the scenario that VHE electrons escaped from the pulsar, diffused in the interstellar medium, and scattered the interstellar radiation field. If interpreted as the pulsar halo scenario, the diffusion coefficient, inferred for electrons with median energies of ∼160\sim160~TeV, is consistent with those obtained from the extended halos around Geminga and Monogem and much smaller than that derived from cosmic ray secondaries. The LHAASO discovery of this source thus likely enriches the class of so-called pulsar halos and confirms that high-energy particles generally diffuse very slowly in the disturbed medium around pulsars.

LHAASO Detection of Ultra-High-Energy Gamma-Ray Emission toward the Giant Molecular Clouds

The γγ-ray from Giant molecular clouds (GMCs) is regarded as the most ideal tool to perform in-situ measurement of cosmic ray (CR) density and spectra in our Galaxy. We report the first detection of γγ-ray emissions in the very-high-energy (VHE) domain from the five nearby GMCs with a stacking analysis based on a 4.5-year γγ-ray observation with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) experiment. The spectral energy distributions derived from the GMCs are consistent with the expected γγ-ray flux produced via CR interacting with the ISM in the energy interval 1 - 100  ~\rm TeV. In addition, we investigate the presence of the CR spectral `knee' by introducing a spectral break in the γγ-ray data. While no significant evidence for the CR knee is found, the current KM2A measurements from GMCs strongly favor a proton CR knee located above 0.9 ~\rm PeV, which is consistent with the latest measurement of the CR spectrum by ground-based experiments.

Measurement of attenuation length of the muon content in extensive air showers from 0.3 to 30 PeV with LHAASO

The attenuation length of the muon content in extensive air showers provides important information regarding the generation and development of air showers. This information can be used not only to improve the description of such showers but also to test fundamental models of hadronic interactions. Using data from the LHAASO-KM2A experiment, the development of the muon content in high-energy air showers was studied. The attenuation length of muon content in the air showers was measured from experimental data in the energy range from 0.3 to 30 PeV using the constant intensity cut method. By comparing the attenuation length of the muon content with predictions from high-energy hadronic interaction models (QGSJET-II-04, SIBYLL 2.3d, and EPOS-LHC), it is evident that LHAASO results are significantly shorter than those predicted by the first two models (QGSJET-II-04 and SIBYLL 2.3d) but relatively close to those predicted by the third model (EPOS-LHC). Thus, the LHAASO data favor the EPOS-LHC model over the other two models. The three interaction models confirmed an increasing trend in the attenuation length as the cosmic-ray energy increases.

Measurement of transverse ΛΛ and Λˉ\barΛ hyperon polarization in ppPb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV

The transverse polarization of ΛΛ and Λˉ\barΛ hyperons is measured in ppPb collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.025.02 TeV. The polarization is averaged over hyperon transverse momentum in the ranges 0.15<pT<6.000.15 < p_{T} < 6.00 GeV/cc, and Feynman-xx in the ranges 0.005<xF<0.0400.005 < x_{F} < 0.040 (forward region) and −0.10<xF<−0.01-0.10 < x_{F} < -0.01 (backward region) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The transverse polarization is found to be compatible with zero for both ΛΛ and Λˉ\barΛ hyperons. The results are also measured as a function of pTp_{T} and xFx_{F} with no significant dependence on these variables observed. The results are compared with previous experimental measurements at different center-of-mass energies and collision environments.

Measurement of Very-high-energy Diffuse Gamma-ray Emissions from the Galactic Plane with LHAASO-WCDA

The diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission is a very important tool used to study the propagation and interaction of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. In this work, we report the measurements of the diffuse emission from the Galactic plane, covering Galactic longitudes from 15∘15^{\circ} to 235∘235^{\circ} and latitudes from −5∘-5^{\circ} to +5∘+5^{\circ}, in an energy range of 1 TeV to 25 TeV, with the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). After masking the sky regions of known sources, the diffuse emission is detected with 24.6σ24.6σ and 9.1σ9.1σ significance in the inner Galactic plane and outer Galactic plane, respectively. The WCDA spectra in both regions can be well described by a power-law function, with spectral indices of −2.67±0.05stat-2.67\pm0.05_{\rm stat} in the inner region and −2.83±0.19stat-2.83\pm0.19_{\rm stat} in the outer region, respectively. Combined with the Square Kilometer Array (KM2A) measurements at higher energies, a clear softening of the spectrum is found in the inner region, with change of spectral indices by ∼0.5\sim0.5 at a break energy around 3030 TeV. The fluxes of the diffuse emission are higher by a factor of 1.5−2.71.5-2.7 than the model prediction assuming local CR spectra and the gas column density, which are consistent with those measured by the KM2A. Along Galactic longitude, the spatial distribution of the diffuse emission shows deviation from that of the gas column density. The spectral shape of the diffuse emission are possibly variation in different longitude region. The WCDA measurements bridge the gap between the low-energy measurements by space detectors and the ultra-high-energy observations by LHAASO-KM2A and other experiments. These results suggest that improved modeling of the wide-band diffuse emission is required.

Study of charm mixing and CP violation with D0→K±π∓π±π∓D^0\to K^\pmπ^\mpπ^\pmπ^\mp decays

A study of charm mixing and CP violation in D0→K±π∓π±π∓D^0\to K^\pmπ^\mpπ^\pmπ^\mp decays is performed using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6fb−1\text{fb}^{-1}. The ratio of promptly produced D0→K+π−π+π−D^0\to K^+π^- π^+π^- to D0→K−π+π−π+D^0\to K^-π^+ π^-π^+ decay rates is measured as a function of D0D^0 decay time, both inclusive over phase space and in bins of phase space. Taking external inputs for the D0−D‾0D^0 -\overline{D}^0 mixing parameters xx and yy allows constraints to be obtained on the hadronic parameters of the charm decay. When combined with previous measurements from charm-threshold experiments and at LHCb, improved knowledge is obtained for these parameters, which is valuable for studies of the angle γγ of the Unitarity Triangle. An alternative analysis is also performed, in which external inputs are taken for the hadronic parameters, and the mixing parameters are determined, including ΔxΔx and ΔyΔy, which are nonzero in the presence of CP violation. It is found that x=(0.85−0.24+0.15)%x=\left(0.85^{+0.15}_{-0.24}\right)\%, y=(0.21+0.29−0.27)%y=\left( 0.21^{+0.29}{-0.27} \right)\%, Δx=(−0.02±0.04)%Δx=\left( -0.02\pm {0.04} \right)\% and Δy=(0.02−0.03+0.04)%Δy=\left( 0.02^{+0.04}_{-0.03} \right)\%. These results are consistent with previous measurements and the hypothesis of CP conservation.

Transient Large-Scale Anisotropy in TeV Cosmic Rays due to an Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection

Large- or medium-scale cosmic ray anisotropy at TeV energies has not previously been confirmed to vary with time. Transient anisotropy changes have been observed below 150 GeV, especially near the passage of an interplanetary shock and coronal mass ejection containing a magnetic flux rope ejected by a solar storm, which can trigger a geomagnetic storm with practical consequences. In such events, cosmic rays provide remote sensing of the magnetic field properties. Here we report the observation of transient large-scale anisotropy in TeV cosmic ray ions using data from the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). We analyze hourly skymaps of the transient cosmic ray intensity excess or deficit, the gradient of which indicates the direction and magnitude of transient large-scale anisotropy across the field of view. We observe enhanced anisotropy above typical hourly fluctuations with >>5σσ significance during some hours of November 4, 2021, in separate data sets for four primary cosmic ray energy ranges of median energy from EE=0.7 to 3.1 TeV. The gradient varies with energy as EγE^γ, where γ≈−0.5γ\approx-0.5. At a median energy ≤\leq1.0 TeV, this gradient corresponds to a dipole anisotropy of at least 1\%, or possibly a weaker anisotropy of higher order. This new type of observation opens the opportunity to study interplanetary magnetic structures using air shower arrays around the world, complementing existing in situ and remote measurements of plasma properties.

Coherent photoproduction of ρ0,ωρ^0, ω and excited vector mesons in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions

The invariant-mass distribution for the coherent photoproduction of dipions in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions is measured using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 224.6±9.6μ224.6 \pm 9.6 μb−1^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment in 2018 at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02 TeV. In the mass range from 400 to 1200 MeV, the results are consistent with previous experiments, with the spectrum dominated by the ρ0ρ^0 meson, which interferes with a nonresonant component, together with a smaller ωω meson contribution. In an extended mass range up to 2300 MeV, models previously used do not fit the data and a consistent description requires the introduction of two resonances at masses of 1350±201350\pm20 MeV and 1790±201790\pm20 MeV with widths of about 300 MeV. The cross-section for each meson is measured differentially in twelve bins of rapidity from 2.05 to 4.90. The ρ0ρ^0 cross-section increases with rapidity from about 400 to 600 mb and is measured with a typical precision of 8\%, while the cross-section times branching fraction for the ω,ρ′ω,ρ^\prime and ρ′′ρ^{\prime\prime}, with the statistical precision of the data, do not have a pronounced rapidity dependence and are between 0.5 and 1.5 mb, with uncertainties up to 30\%. A large nuclear suppression is observed for the ρ0ρ^0 meson compared to expectations based on photoproduction on the proton that use the impulse approximation. Significant suppression is also observed compared to that predicted by elastic scattering described in the Glauber approach, or with the addition of inelastic scattering in a Gribov--Glauber model.

Observation of the γγ-ray Emission from W43 with LHAASO

In this paper, we report the detection of the very-high-energy (VHE, 100 GeV<E<100 TeV 100{\rm\ GeV} < E < 100{\rm\ TeV} ) and ultra-high-energy (UHE, E>100 TeVE > 100\rm\ TeV) γγ-ray emissions from the direction of the young star-forming region W43, observed by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observation (LHAASO). The extended γγ-ray source was detected with a significance of ∼16 σ{\sim}16\,σ by KM2A and ∼17 σ{\sim}17\,σ by WCDA, respectively. The angular extension of this γγ-ray source is about 0.5 degrees, corresponding to a physical size of about 50 pc. We discuss the origin of the γγ-ray emission and possible cosmic ray acceleration in the W43 region using multi-wavelength data. Our findings suggest that W43 is likely another young star cluster capable of accelerating cosmic rays (CRs) to at least several hundred TeV.

Study of Ultra-High-Energy Gamma-Ray Source 1LHAASO J0056+6346u and Its Possible Origins

We report a dedicated study of the newly discovered extended UHE γγ-ray source 1LHAASO J0056+6346u. Analyzing 979 days of LHAASO-WCDA data and 1389 days of LHAASO-KM2A data, we observed a significant excess of γγ-ray events with both WCDA and KM2A. Assuming a point power-law source with a fixed spectral index, the significance maps reveal excesses of ∼12.65 σ{\sim}12.65\,σ, ∼22.18 σ{\sim}22.18\,σ, and ∼10.24 σ{\sim}10.24\,σ in the energy ranges of 1--25 TeV, 25--100 TeV, and >100> 100 TeV, respectively. We use a 3D likelihood algorithm to derive the morphological and spectral parameters, and the source is detected with significances of 12.65 σ12.65\,σ by WCDA and 25.27 σ25.27\,σ by KM2A. The best-fit positions derived from WCDA and KM2A data are (R.A. = 13.96∘±0.09∘13.96^\circ\pm0.09^\circ, Decl. = 63.92∘±0.05∘63.92^\circ\pm0.05^\circ) and (R.A. = 14.00∘±0.05∘14.00^\circ\pm0.05^\circ, Decl. = 63.79∘±0.02∘63.79^\circ\pm0.02^\circ), respectively. The angular size (r39r_{39}) of 1LHAASO J0056+6346u is 0.34∘±0.04∘0.34^\circ\pm0.04^\circ at 1--25 TeV and 0.24∘±0.02∘0.24^\circ\pm0.02^\circ at >25> 25 TeV. The differential flux of this UHE γγ-ray source can be described by an exponential cutoff power-law function: (2.67±0.25)×10−15(E/20 TeV)−1.97±0.10e−E/(55.1±7.2) TeV TeV−1 cm−2 s−1(2.67\pm0.25) \times 10^{-15} (E/20\,\text{TeV})^{-1.97\pm0.10} e^{-E/(55.1\pm7.2)\,\text{TeV}} \,\text{TeV}^{-1}\,\text{cm}^{-2}\,\text{s}^{-1}. To explore potential sources of γγ-ray emission, we investigated the gas distribution around 1LHAASO J0056+6346u. 1LHAASO J0056+6346u is likely to be a TeV PWN powered by an unknown pulsar, which would naturally explain both its spatial and spectral properties. Another explanation is that this UHE γγ-ray source might be associated with gas content illuminated by a nearby CR accelerator, possibly the SNR candidate G124.0+1.4.

The Compilation and Validation of the Spectroscopic Redshift Catalogs for the DESI-COSMOS and DESI-XMMLSS Fields

Over several dedicated programs that include targets beyond the main cosmological samples, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) collected spectra for 304,970 unique objects in two fields centered on the COSMOS and XMM-LSS fields. In this work, we develop spectroscopic redshift robustness criteria for those spectra, validate these criteria using visual inspection, and provide two custom Value-Added Catalogs with our redshift characterizations. With these criteria, we reliably classify 212,935 galaxies below z < 1.6, 9,713 quasars and 35,222 stars. As a critical element in characterizing the selection function, we provide the description of 70 different algorithms that were used to select these targets from imaging data. To facilitate joint imaging/spectroscopic analyses, we provide row-matched photometry from the Dark Energy Camera, Hyper-Suprime Cam, and public COSMOS2020 photometric catalogs. Finally, we demonstrate example applications of these large catalogs to photometric redshift estimation, cluster finding, and completeness studies.

Branching fraction and effective lifetime measurements of the rare decay Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\toμ^+μ^- and searches for the decays B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- and Bs0→μ+μ−γB^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ are reported using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 77 TeV, 88 TeV and 1313 TeV, corresponding to a luminosity of 99 fb−1^{-1}. The branching fraction B(Bs0→μ+μ−)=(3.09−0.43−0.11+0.46+0.15)×10−9{\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=\left(3.09^{+0.46+0.15}_{-0.43-0.11}\right)\times 10^{-9} and the effective lifetime τ(Bs0→μ+μ−)=(2.07±0.29±0.03)τ(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=(2.07\pm 0.29\pm 0.03) are measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No significant signal for B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- and Bs0→μ+μ−γB^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ decays is found and upper limits B(B0→μ+μ−)<2.6×10−10\mathcal{B}(B^0\toμ^+μ^-)<2.6\times 10^{-10} and B(Bs0→μ+μ−γ)<2.0×10−9\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ)<2.0\times 10^{-9} at the 95% CL are determined, where the latter is limited to the range mμμ>4.9m_{μμ} > 4.9 GeV/c2/c^2. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

Angular analysis of D0→π+π−μ+μ−D^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- and D0→K+K−μ+μ−D^0 \to K^+K^-μ^+μ^- decays and search for CPCP violation

The first full angular analysis and an updated measurement of the decay-rate CPCP asymmetry of the D0→π+π−μ+μ−D^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- and D0→K+K−μ+μ−D^0 \to K^+K^-μ^+μ^- decays are reported. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1}. The full set of CPCP-averaged angular observables and their CPCP asymmetries are measured as a function of the dimuon invariant mass. The results are consistent with expectations from the standard model and with CPCP symmetry.

Constraints on the CKM angle γγ from B±→Dh±B^\pm\to Dh^\pm decays using D→h±h′∓π0D\rightarrow h^\pm h^{\prime\mp}π^0 final states

A data sample collected with the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} is used to measure eleven CPCP violation observables in B±→Dh±B^\pm\to Dh^\pm decays, where hh is either a kaon or a pion. The neutral DD meson decay is reconstructed in the three-body final states: K±π∓π0K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0}; π+π−π0π^+π^-π^0; K+K−π0K^+K^-π^0 and the suppressed π±K∓π0π^\pm K^\mpπ^0 combination. The mode where a large CPCP asymmetry is expected, B±→[π±K∓π0]DK±B^\pm\to [π^\pm K^\mpπ^0]_DK^\pm, is observed with a significance greater than seven standard deviations. The ratio of the partial width of this mode relative to that of the favoured mode, B±→[K±π∓π0]DK±B^\pm\to [K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0]_D K^\pm, is RADS(K)=(1.27±0.16±0.02)×10−2R_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = (1.27\pm0.16\pm0.02)\times 10^{-2}. Evidence for a large CPCP asymmetry is also seen: AADS(K)=−0.38±0.12±0.02A_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = -0.38\pm0.12\pm0.02. Constraints on the CKM angle γγ are calculated from the eleven reported observables.

First measurement of the Z→μ+μ−Z\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- angular coefficients in the forward region of pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV

The first study of the angular distribution of μ+μ−μ^+ μ^- pairs produced in the forward rapidity region via the Drell-Yan reaction pp→γ∗/Z+X→l+l−+Xpp \rightarrow γ^{*}/Z +X \rightarrow l^+ l^- + X is presented, using data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb−1\rm{fb}^{-1}. The coefficients of the five leading terms in the angular distribution are determined as a function of the dimuon transverse momentum and rapidity. The results are compared to various theoretical predictions of the ZZ-boson production mechanism and can also be used to probe transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions within the proton.

Identification of charm jets at LHCb

The identification of charm jets is achieved at LHCb for data collected in 2015-2018 using a method based on the properties of displaced vertices reconstructed and matched with jets. The performance of this method is determined using a dijet calibration dataset recorded by the LHCb detector and selected such that the jets are unbiased in quantities used in the tagging algorithm. The charm-tagging efficiency is reported as a function of the transverse momentum of the jet. The measured efficiencies are compared to those obtained from simulation and found to be in good agreement.

Measurement of χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) production in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 and 1313 TeV

The production cross-section of the χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) state relative to the ψ(2S)ψ(2S) meson is measured using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of s=8\sqrt{s}=8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.0 and 5.4 fb−1^{-1}, respectively. The two mesons are reconstructed in the J/ψπ+π−J/ψπ^{+}π^{-} final state. The ratios of the prompt and nonprompt χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) to ψ(2S)ψ(2S) production cross-sections are measured as a function of transverse momentum, pTp_{\rm T}, and rapidity, yy, in the kinematic range 4<pT<204 < p_{\rm T} < 20 GeV/cc and 2.0<y<4.52.0 < y < 4.5. The prompt ratio is found to increase with pTp_{\rm T} independently of yy. The double-differential cross-section ratio of χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) relative to ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons between 13 and 8 TeV is also measured for the prompt component and observed to be consistent with unity, independent of pTp_{\rm T} and centre-of-mass energy.

These observables give access to the charm mixing parameters yCPππ−yCPKπy_{CP}^{ππ} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} and yCPKK−yCPKπy_{CP}^{KK} - y_{CP}^{Kπ}, and are measured as yCPππ−yCPKπ=(6.57±0.53±0.16)×10−3y_{CP}^{ππ} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (6.57 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.16) \times 10^{-3}, yCPKK−yCPKπ=(7.08±0.30±0.14)×10−3y_{CP}^{KK} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (7.08 \pm 0.30 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{-3}, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Measurement of the lifetimes of promptly produced Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} and Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} baryons

A measurement of the lifetimes of the Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} and Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} baryons is reported using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV13\text{ TeV}, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−15.4\text{ fb}^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. The Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} and Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} baryons are produced directly from proton interactions and reconstructed in the pK−K−π+pK^{-}K^{-}π^{+} final state. The Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} lifetime is measured to be 276.5±13.4±4.4±0.7 fs276.5\pm13.4\pm4.4\pm0.7\text{ fs}, and the Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} lifetime is measured to be 148.0±2.3±2.2±0.2 fs148.0\pm2.3\pm2.2\pm0.2\text{ fs}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the uncertainty on the D0D^{0} lifetime. These results confirm previous LHCb measurements based on semileptonic beauty-hadron decays, which disagree with earlier results of a four times shorter Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} lifetime, and provide the single most precise measurement of the Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} lifetime.

Measurement of the nuclear modification factor and prompt charged particle production in pPbp\mathrm{Pb} and pppp collisions at sNN=5 TeV\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}

The production of prompt charged particles in proton-lead collisions and in proton-proton collisions at the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy sNN=5 TeV{\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}} is studied at LHCb as a function of pseudorapidity (ηη) and transverse momentum (pTp_{\mathrm{T}}) with respect to the proton beam direction. The nuclear modification factor for charged particles is determined as a function of ηη between −4.8<η<−2.5{-4.8<η<-2.5} (backward region) and 2.0<η<4.8{2.0<η<4.8} (forward region), and pTp_{\mathrm{T}} between 0.2<pT<8.0 GeV/c{0.2<p_{\mathrm{T}}<8.0\,\mathrm{GeV}/c}. The results show a suppression of charged particle production in proton-lead collisions relative to proton-proton collisions in the forward region and an enhancement in the backward region for pTp_{\mathrm{T}} larger than 1.5 GeV/c1.5\,\mathrm{GeV}/c. This measurement constrains nuclear PDFs and saturation models at previously unexplored values of the parton momentum fraction down to 10−610^{-6}.

The WW boson mass is measured using proton-proton collision data at s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb−1^{-1} recorded during 2016 by the LHCb experiment. With a simultaneous fit of the muon q/pTq/p_T distribution of a sample of W→μνW \to μν decays and the ϕ∗ϕ^* distribution of a sample of Z→μμZ\toμμ decays the WW boson mass is determined to be \begin{equation*} m_{W} = 80354 \pm 23_{\rm stat} \pm 10_{\rm exp} \pm 17_{\rm theory} \pm 9_{\rm PDF}~\mathrm{MeV}, \end{equation*} where uncertainties correspond to contributions from statistical, experimental systematic, theoretical and parton distribution function sources. Observation of an exotic narrow doubly charmed tetraquark

Conventional hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and quark-antiquark pairs, respectively. The observation of a new type of hadronic state, a doubly charmed tetraquark containing two charm quarks, an anti-uu and an anti-dd quark, is reported using data collected by the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. This exotic state with a mass of about 3875 MeV/c2/c^2 manifests itself as a narrow peak in the mass spectrum of D0D0π+D^0D^0π^+ mesons just below the D∗+D0D^{*+}D^0 mass threshold. The near threshold mass together with a strikingly narrow width reveals the resonance nature of the state.

Observation of the B0→D‾∗0K+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*0}K^{+}π^{-} and Bs0→D‾∗0K−π+B_s^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*0}K^{-}π^{+} decays

The first observations of B0→D‾∗(2007)0K+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{+}π^{-} and Bs0→D‾∗(2007)0K−π+B_s^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}π^{+} decays are presented, and their branching fractions relative to that of the B0→D‾∗(2007)0π+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}π^{+}π^{-} decay are reported. These modes can potentially be used to investigate the spectroscopy of charm and charm-strange resonances and to determine the angle γγ of the CKM unitarity triangle. It is also important to understand them as a source of potential background in determinations of γγ from B+→DK+B^{+}\rightarrow DK^{+} and B0→DK+π−B^{0}\rightarrow DK^{+}π^{-} decays. The analysis is based on a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−15.4 ~\rm{fb}^{-1} of proton--proton collision data at 13 TeV13 ~\rm{TeV} centre-of-mass energy recorded with the LHCb detector. The D‾∗(2007)0\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0} mesons are fully reconstructed in the D‾0π0\overline{D}^{0}π^{0} and D‾0γ\overline{D}^{0}γ channels, with the D‾0→K+π−\overline{D}^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}π^{-} decay. Precise determination of the B0s-B0sbar oscillation frequency

Mesons comprising a beauty quark and a strange quark can oscillate between particle (B0s) and antiparticle (B0s) flavour eigenstates, with a frequency given by the mass difference between heavy and light mass eigenstates, deltams. Here we present ameasurement of deltams using B0s2DsPi decays produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The oscillation frequency is found to be deltams = 17.7683 +- 0.0051 +- 0.0032 ps-1, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This measurement improves upon the current deltams precision by a factor of two. We combine this result with previous LHCb measurements to determine deltams = 17.7656 +- 0.0057 ps-1, which is the legacy measurement of the original LHCb detector.

The integrated cross-section is determined to be \begin{equation*} σ(Z\rightarrowμ^+μ^-) = 196.4 \pm 0.2 \pm 1.6 \pm 3.9~pb, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. The measured results are in agreement with theoretical predictions within uncertainties.

Search for massive long-lived particles decaying semileptonically at sqrt(s)=13 TeV

A search is performed for massive long-lived particles (LLP) decaying semileptonically into a muon and two quarks. Two kinds of LLP production processes were considered. In the first, a Higgs-like boson with mass from 30 to 200 GeV is produced by gluon fusion and decays into two LLPs. The analysis covers LLP mass values from 10 GeV up to about one half the Higgs-like boson mass. The second LLP production mode is directly from quark interactions, with LLP masses from 10 to 90 GeV. The LLP lifetimes considered range from 5 to 200 ps. This study uses LHCb data collected from proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 1/fb. No evidence of these long-lived states has been observed, and upper limits on the production cross-section times branching ratio have been set for each model considered.

Search for the decay B0→ϕμ+μ−B^0\toϕμ^+μ^-

A search for the decay B0→ϕμ+μ−B^0\toϕμ^+μ^- is performed using proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1}. No evidence for the B0→ϕμ+μ−B^0\to ϕμ^+ μ^- decay is found and an upper limit on the branching fraction, excluding the ϕϕ and charmonium regions in the dimuon spectrum, of 4.4×10−34.4 \times 10^{-3} at a 90%\% credibility level, relative to that of the Bs0→ϕμ+μ−B^0_s \to ϕμ^+ μ^- decay, is established. Using the measured Bs0→ϕμ+μ−B^0_s\toϕμ^+μ^- branching fraction and assuming a phase-space model, the absolute branching fraction of the decay B0→ϕμ+μ−B^0\to ϕμ^+ μ^- in the full q2q^2 range is determined to be less than 3.2×10−93.2 \times 10^{-9} at a 90%\% credibility level.

Simultaneous determination of CKM angle γγ and charm mixing parameters

A combination of measurements sensitive to the CPCP violation angle γγ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle and to the charm mixing parameters that describe oscillations between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 mesons is performed. Results from the charm and beauty sectors, based on data collected with the LHCb detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, are combined for the first time. This method provides an improvement on the precision of the charm mixing parameter yy by a factor of two with respect to the current world average. The charm mixing parameters are determined to be x=(0.400 −0.053 +0.052)%x = (0.400^{\,+0.052}_{\,-0.053})\% and y=(0.630 −0.030 +0.033)%y = (0.630^{\,+0.033}_{\,-0.030})\%. The angle γγ is found to be γ=(65.4 −4.2 +3.8)∘γ= (65.4^{\,+3.8}_{\,-4.2})^\circ and is the most precise determination from a single experiment.

Study of ZZ bosons produced in association with charm in the forward region

Events containing a ZZ boson and a charm jet are studied for the first time in the forward region of proton-proton collisions. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb−16 \, {\rm fb}^{-1} collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the LHCb detector. In events with a ZZ boson and a jet, the fraction of charm jets is determined in intervals of ZZ-boson rapidity in the range 2.0<y(Z)<4.52.0 < y(Z) < 4.5. A sizable enhancement is observed in the forward-most y(Z)y(Z) interval, which could be indicative of a valence-like intrinsic-charm component in the proton wave function.

Study of the doubly charmed tetraquark Tcc+T_{cc}^+

An exotic narrow state in the D0D0π+D^0D^0π^+ mass spectrum just below the D∗+D0D^{*+}D^0 mass threshold is studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} acquired with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The state is consistent with the ground isoscalar Tcc+T^+_{cc} tetraquark with a quark content of ccuˉdˉcc\bar{u}\bar{d} and spin-parity quantum numbers JP=1+\mathrm{J}^{\mathrm{P}}=1^+. Study of the DDDD mass spectra disfavours interpretation of the resonance as the isovector state. The decay structure via intermediate off-shell D∗+D^{*+} mesons is confirmed by the D0π+D^0π^+ mass distribution. The mass of the resonance and its coupling to the D∗DD^{*}D system are analysed. Resonance parameters including the pole position, scattering length, effective range and compositeness are measured to reveal important information about the nature of the Tcc+T^+_{cc} state. In addition, an unexpected dependence of the production rate on track multiplicity is observed.

Test of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays

The Standard Model of particle physics currently provides our best description of fundamental particles and their interactions. The theory predicts that the different charged leptons, the electron, muon and tau, have identical electroweak interaction strengths. Previous measurements have shown a wide range of particle decays are consistent with this principle of lepton universality. This article presents evidence for the breaking of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations, based on proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are of processes in which a beauty meson transforms into a strange meson with the emission of either an electron and a positron, or a muon and an antimuon. If confirmed by future measurements, this violation of lepton universality would imply physics beyond the Standard Model, such as a new fundamental interaction between quarks and leptons.

Urban Region Profiling via A Multi-Graph Representation Learning Framework

Urban region profiling can benefit urban analytics. Although existing studies have made great efforts to learn urban region representation from multi-source urban data, there are still three limitations: (1) Most related methods focused merely on global-level inter-region relations while overlooking local-level geographical contextual signals and intra-region information; (2) Most previous works failed to develop an effective yet integrated fusion module which can deeply fuse multi-graph correlations; (3) State-of-the-art methods do not perform well in regions with high variance socioeconomic attributes. To address these challenges, we propose a multi-graph representative learning framework, called Region2Vec, for urban region profiling. Specifically, except that human mobility is encoded for inter-region relations, geographic neighborhood is introduced for capturing geographical contextual information while POI side information is adopted for representing intra-region information by knowledge graph. Then, graphs are used to capture accessibility, vicinity, and functionality correlations among regions. To consider the discriminative properties of multiple graphs, an encoder-decoder multi-graph fusion module is further proposed to jointly learn comprehensive representations. Experiments on real-world datasets show that Region2Vec can be employed in three applications and outperforms all state-of-the-art baselines. Particularly, Region2Vec has better performance than previous studies in regions with high variance socioeconomic attributes.

First observation of the decay Bs0→K−μ+νμB_s^0 \to K^-μ^+ν_μ and a measurement of ∣Vub∣/∣Vcb∣|V_{ub}|/|V_{cb}|

The first observation of the suppressed semileptonic Bs0→K−μ+νμB_s^0 \to K^-μ^+ν_μ decay is reported. Using a data sample recorded in {\it pp} collisions in 2012 with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb−1\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, the branching fraction \mbox{B(Bs0→K−μ+νμ)\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to K^-μ^+ν_μ)} is measured to be (1.06±0.05 (stat)±0.08 (syst))×10−4(1.06\pm0.05~(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.08~(\mathrm{syst}))\times 10^{-4}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one represents the combined systematic uncertainties. The decay Bs0→Ds−μ+νμB_s^0 \to D_s^-μ^+ν_μ, where Ds−D_s^- is reconstructed in the final state K+K−π−K^+K^-π^-, is used as a normalization channel to minimize the experimental systematic uncertainty. A measurement of four branching-fraction ratios for three-body decays of BB mesons involving two open-charm hadrons in the final state is presented. Run 1 and Run 2 pppp collision data are used, recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies 77, 88, and 1313 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 99 fb−1^{-1}. A measurement of direct CP violation in the decay B+→K+π0B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0} is reported using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1\textrm{fb}^{-1}, collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV. The CP asymmetry is measured to be 0.025±0.015±0.006±0.0030.025 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.003, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to an external input, respectively. This is the most precise measurement of the CP asymmetry in the decay B+→K+π0B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0} and exceeds the precision on the current world average. This direct CP asymmetry is a key input to studies of a long-standing anomaly in BB meson decays, known as the KπKπ-puzzle. The asymmetry is consistent with the previous measurements of this quantity, confirming and significantly enhancing the observed anomalous difference between the direct CP asymmetries of the B0→K+π−B^{0} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{-} and B+→K+π0B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0} decays.

Measurement of differential bbˉb\bar{b}- and ccˉc\bar{c}-dijet cross-sections in the forward region of pppp collisions at s=13 TeV\sqrt{s}=13 ~ \mathrm{TeV}

The inclusive bbˉb \bar{b}- and ccˉc \bar{c}-dijet production cross-sections in the forward region of pppp collisions are measured using a data sample collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb−1^{-1}. Differential cross-sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and of the pseudorapidity of the leading jet, of the rapidity difference between the jets, and of the dijet invariant mass. A fiducial region for the measurement is defined by requiring that the two jets originating from the two bb or cc quarks are emitted with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV/c/c, pseudorapidity in the range 2.2<η<4.22.2 < η< 4.2, and with a difference in the azimuthal angle between the two jets greater than 1.5. The integrated bbˉb \bar{b}-dijet cross-section is measured to be 53.0±9.753.0 \pm 9.7 nb, and the total ccˉc \bar{c}-dijet cross-section is measured to be 73±1673 \pm 16 nb. The ratio between ccˉc \bar{c}- and bbˉb \bar{b}-dijet cross-sections is also measured and found to be 1.37±0.271.37 \pm 0.27. The results are in agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order.

Measurement of the CKM angle γγ in B±→DK±B^\pm\to D K^\pm and B±→Dπ±B^\pm \to D π^\pm decays with D→KS0h+h−D \to K_\mathrm S^0 h^+ h^-

A measurement of CPCP-violating observables is performed using the decays B±→DK±B^\pm\to D K^\pm and B±→Dπ±B^\pm\to D π^\pm, where the DD meson is reconstructed in one of the self-conjugate three-body final states KSπ+π−K_{\mathrm S}π^+π^- and KSK+K−K_{\mathrm S}K^+K^- (commonly denoted KSh+h−K_{\mathrm S} h^+h^-). The decays are analysed in bins of the DD-decay phase space, leading to a measurement that is independent of the modelling of the DD-decay amplitude. The hadronic parameters rBDKr_B^{DK}, rBDπr_B^{Dπ}, δBDKδ_B^{DK}, and δBDπδ_B^{Dπ}, which are the ratios and strong-phase differences of the suppressed and favoured B±B^\pm decays, are also reported.

The study uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}. No significant signal is observed in the invariant-mass range of 3.4−-3.8 GeV/c2\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2. Upper limits are set on the ratio of branching fractions multiplied by the production cross-section with respect to the Ξcc++→(Ξc+→pK−π+)π+\itΞ_{cc}^{++} \rightarrow (\itΞ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+}) π^{+} decay for different Ξcc+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} mass and lifetime hypotheses in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and the transverse momentum range from 2.5 to 25 GeV/c\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c. The results from this search are combined with a previously published search for the Ξcc+→Λc+K−π+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} \rightarrow \itΛ_{c}^{+} K^{-} π^{+} decay mode, yielding a maximum local significance of 4.0 standard deviations around the mass of 3620 MeV/c2\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}/c^2, including systematic uncertainties. The decays Bc+→(ψ(2S)→J/ψπ+π−)π+B_c^+\rightarrow ( ψ(2S) \rightarrow J/ψπ^+ π^-)π^+ , Bc+→ψ(2S)π+π+π−B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+π^+π^-, Bc+→J/ψK+π+π−B_c^+\rightarrow J/ψK^+π^+π^- and Bc+→K+K+K−B_c^+\rightarrow K^+K^+K^- are observed for the first time, and evidence for the Bc+→ψ(2S)K+K−π+B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)K^+K^-π^+ decay is found, where J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay modes. The ratios of branching fractions between the different Bc+B_c^+ decays are reported as well as the fractions of the decays proceeding via intermediate resonances. The results largely support the factorisation approach used for a theoretical description of the studied decays.

Amplitude analysis of the B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^- decay

The results of an amplitude analysis of the charmless three-body decay B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^-, in which C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects are taken into account, are reported. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb−13 \text{fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. The most challenging aspect of the analysis is the description of the behaviour of the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave contribution, which is achieved by using three complementary approaches based on the isobar model, the K-matrix formalism, and a quasi-model-independent procedure. Additional resonant contributions for all three methods are described using a common isobar model, and include the ρ(770)0ρ(770)^0, ω(782)ω(782) and ρ(1450)0ρ(1450)^0 resonances in the π+π−π^+π^- P-wave, the f2(1270)f_2(1270) resonance in the π+π−π^+π^- D-wave, and the ρ3(1690)0ρ_3(1690)^0 resonance in the π+π−π^+π^- F-wave. Significant C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects are observed in both S- and D-waves, as well as in the interference between the S- and P-waves. The results from all three approaches agree and provide new insight into the dynamics and the origin of C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects in B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^- decays.

Determination of quantum numbers for several excited charmed mesons observed in B−→D∗+π−π−B^- \to D^{*+} π^- π^- decays

A four-body amplitude analysis of the B−→D∗+π−π−B^- \to D^{*+} π^- π^- decay is performed, where fractions and relative phases of the various resonances contributing to the decay are measured. Several quasi-model-independent analyses are performed aimed at searching for the presence of new states and establishing the quantum numbers of previously observed charmed meson resonances. In particular the resonance parameters and quantum numbers are determined for the D1(2420)D_1(2420), D1(2430)D_1(2430), D0(2550)D_0(2550), D1∗(2600)D^*_1(2600), D2(2740)D_2(2740) and D3∗(2750)D^*_3(2750) states. The mixing between the D1(2420)D_1(2420) and D1(2430)D_1(2430) resonances is studied and the mixing parameters are measured. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1fb^{-1}, collected in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV with the LHCb detector.

First observation of excited Ωb−Ω_b^- states

We report four narrow peaks in the Ξb0K−Ξ_b^0K^- mass spectrum obtained using pppp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} recorded by the LHCb experiment. Referring to these states by their mass, the mass values are \begin{align*} m(Ω_b(6316)^-) &= 6315.64\pm0.31\pm0.07\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6330)^-) &= 6330.30\pm0.28\pm0.07\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6340)^-) &= 6339.71\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6350)^-) &= 6349.88\pm0.35\pm0.05\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \end{align*}where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and the last is due to the knowledge of the Ξb0Ξ_b^0 mass. The natural widths of the three lower mass states are consistent with zero, and the 90% confidence-level upper limits are determined to be Γ(Ωb(6316)−)<2.8{Γ(Ω_b(6316)^-)<2.8} MeV, Γ(Ωb(6330)−)<3.1{Γ(Ω_b(6330)^-)<3.1} MeV and Γ(Ωb(6340)−)<1.5{Γ(Ω_b(6340)^-)<1.5} MeV. The natural width of the Ωb(6350)−Ω_b(6350)^- peak is 1.4−0.8+1.0±0.11.4^{+1.0}_{-0.8}\pm0.1 MeV, which is 2.5σσ from zero and corresponds to an upper limit of 2.8 MeV. The peaks have local significances ranging from 3.6σσ to 7.2σσ. After accounting for the look-elsewhere effect, the significances of the Ωb(6316)−Ω_b(6316)^- and Ωb(6330)−Ω_b(6330)^- peaks are reduced to 2.1σσ and 2.6σσ respectively, while the two higher mass peaks exceed 5σσ. The observed peaks are consistent with expectations for excited Ωb−Ω_b^- resonances.

The decay Λb0→ηc(1S)pK−Λ_b^0 \to η_c(1S) p K^- is observed for the first time using a data sample of proton-proton collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb−1fb^{-1}, collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The branching fraction of the decay is measured, using the Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp K^- decay as a normalization mode, to be B(Λb0→ηc(1S)pK−)=(1.06±0.16±0.06−0.19+0.22)×10−4\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to η_c(1S) p K^-)=(1.06\pm0.16\pm0.06^{+0.22}_{-0.19})\times10^{-4}, where the quoted uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to external inputs, respectively. A study of the ηc(1S)pη_c(1S) p mass spectrum is performed to search for the Pc(4312)+P_c(4312)^+ pentaquark state. No evidence is observed and an upper limit of \begin{equation*} \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to P_c(4312)^+ K^-)\times \mathcal{B}(P_c(4312)^+ \to η_c(1S) p)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to η_c(1S) p K^-)} < 0.24 \end{equation*} is obtained at the 95% confidence level.

Isospin amplitudes in Λb0→J/ψΛ(Σ0)Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ(Σ^0) and Ξb0→J/ψΞ0(Λ)Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΞ^0(Λ) decays

Ratios of isospin amplitudes in hadron decays are a useful probe of the interplay between weak and strong interactions, and allow searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We present the first results on isospin amplitudes in bb-baryon decays, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb−1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector in pppp collisions at center of mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The isospin amplitude ratio ∣A1(Λb0→J/ψΣ0)/A0(Λb0→J/ψΛ)∣|A_1(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΣ^0)/A_0(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)|, where the subscript on AA indicates the final-state isospin, is measured to be less than 1/21.8 at 95\% confidence level. The Cabibbo suppressed Ξb0→J/ψΛΞ_b^0\to J/ψΛ decay is observed for the first time, allowing for the measurement ∣A0(Ξb0→J/ψΛ)/A1/2(Ξb0→J/ψΞ0)∣=0.37±0.06±0.02|A_0(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)/A_{1/2}(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΞ^0)| =0.37 \pm 0.06\pm 0.02, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Measurement of Ξcc++\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++} production in pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV

The production of Ξcc++\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++} baryons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV is measured in the transverse-momentum range 4<pT<15 GeV4<p_\mathrm{T}<15~\mathrm{GeV}/cc and the rapidity range 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5. The data used in this measurement correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb−1\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2016. The ratio of the Ξcc++\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++} production cross-section times the branching fraction of the Ξcc++→Λc+K−π+π+\mathit{Ξ_{cc}^{++} \to Λ_{c}^{+} K^- π^+ π^+} decay relative to the prompt Λc+\mathit{Λ_c^{+}} production cross-section is found to be (2.22±0.27±0.29)×10−4(2.22\pm 0.27 \pm 0.29)\times 10^{-4}, assuming the central value of the measured Ξcc++\mathit{Ξ_{cc}^{++}} lifetime, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| with Bs0→Ds(∗)−μ+νμB_s^0 \to D_s^{(*)-} μ^+ ν_μ decays

The element ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is measured using semileptonic Bs0B_s^0 decays produced in proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}. Rates of Bs0→Ds−μ+νμB_s^0 \to D_s^{-} μ^+ ν_μ and Bs0→Ds∗−μ+νμB_s^0 \to D_s^{*-} μ^+ ν_μ decays are analyzed using hadronic form-factor parametrizations derived either by Caprini, Lellouch and Neubert (CLN) or by Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed (BGL). The measured values of ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| are (41.4±0.6±0.9±1.2)×10−3{(41.4 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-3}} and (42.3±0.8±0.9±1.2)×10−3{(42.3 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-3}} in the CLN and BGL parametrization, respectively. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the external inputs used in the measurement. These results are in agreement with those obtained from decays of B+B^+ and B0B^0 mesons. They are the first determinations of ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| at a hadron-collider experiment and the first using Bs0B_s^0 meson decays.

Measurement of C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables in the B0→K∗0μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}μ^{+}μ^{-} decay

An angular analysis of the B0→K∗0(→K+π−)μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}(\to K^{+}π^{-})μ^{+}μ^{-} decay is presented using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1^{-1} of pppp collision data collected with the LHCb experiment. The full set of C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables are determined in bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system. Contamination from decays with the K+π−K^{+}π^{-} system in an S-wave configuration is taken into account. The tension seen between the previous LHCb results and the Standard Model predictions persists with the new data. The precise value of the significance of this tension depends on the choice of theory nuisance parameters.

Measurement of fs/fuf_s / f_u variation with proton-proton collision energy and BB-meson kinematics

The ratio of the Bs0\mathrm{B}^0_\mathrm{s} and B+\mathrm{B}^+ fragmentation fractions fsf_\mathrm{s} and fuf_u is studied with Bs0→J/ψϕB^0_\mathrm{s}\to\mathrm{J}/ψϕ and B+→J/ψK+B^+\to\mathrm{J}/ψK^+ decays using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7, 8 and 13 TeV\text{ TeV} center-of-mass energies. The analysis is performed in bins of B\mathrm{B}-meson momentum, longitudinal momentum, transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and rapidity. The fragmentation-fraction ratio fs/fuf_\mathrm{s} / f_u is observed to depend on the B\mathrm{B}-meson transverse momentum with a significance of 6.0 σ6.0\,σ. This dependency is driven by the 13 TeV\text{ TeV} sample (8.7 σ8.7\,σ) while the results for the other collision energies are not significant when considered separately. Furthermore the results show a 4.8 σ4.8\,σ evidence for an increase of fs/fuf_\mathrm{s} / f_u as a function of collision energy.

Measurement of CP violation in the Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ decay and search for the B0→ϕϕB^0\rightarrow ϕϕ decay

A measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ decays is presented. Using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.05.0fb−1^{-1} collected by the $\mbox{LHCb}$ experiment at centre-of-mass energies s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV in 2011, 8 TeV in 2012 and 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016, a signal yield of around 9000 Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ decays is obtained. The CP-violating phase ϕsssˉsϕ_s^{s\bar{s}s} is measured to be −0.073±0.115-0.073 \pm 0.115(stat)±0.027\pm 0.027(syst) rad, under the assumption it is independent on the helicity of the ϕϕϕϕ decay. In addition, the CP-violating phases of the transverse polarisations under the assumption of CP conservation of the longitudinal phase are measured. The helicity-independent direct CP-violation parameter is also measured, and is found to be ∣λ∣=0.99±0.05|λ|=0.99 \pm 0.05 (stat)±0.01 \pm 0.01 (syst). In addition, TT-odd triple-product asymmetries are measured. The results obtained are consistent with the hypothesis of CP conservation in b→sˉssˉb\rightarrow\bar{s}s\bar{s} transitions. Finally, a limit on the branching fraction of the B0→ϕϕB^0\rightarrow ϕϕ decay is determined to be B(B0→ϕϕ)<2.7×10−8\mathcal{B}(B^0\rightarrow ϕϕ)<2.7\times 10^{-8} at 90% confidence level.

The cross-section for prompt production of ηc(1S)η_c(1S) mesons relative to that of the J/ψJ/ψ meson is measured using the ppˉ{p\bar{p}} decay mode and is found to be σηc(1S)/σJ/ψ=1.69±0.15±0.10±0.18{σ_{η_c(1S)}/σ_{J/ψ} = 1.69 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.18}. The quoted uncertainties are, in order, statistical, systematic and due to uncertainties on the branching fractions of the J/ψ→ppˉ{J/ψ\to p \bar{p}} and ηc→ppˉ{η_c\to p \bar{p}} decays. The prompt ηc(1S)η_c(1S) production cross-section is determined to be σηc(1S)=1.26±0.11±0.08±0.14 μb{σ_{η_c(1S)} = 1.26 \pm 0.11\pm 0.08 \pm 0.14 \,μb}, where the last uncertainty includes that on the J/ψ{J/ψ} meson cross-section. The ratio of the branching fractions of bb-hadron decays to the ηc(1S)η_c(1S) and J/ψ{J/ψ} states is measured to be Bb→ηcX/Bb→J/ψX=0.48±0.03±0.03±0.05{\mathcal{B}_{b\toη_c X}/\mathcal{B}_{b\to J/ψX} = 0.48 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.05}, where the last uncertainty is due to those on the branching fractions of the J/ψ→ppˉ{J/ψ\to p \bar{p}} and ηc→ppˉ{η_c\to p \bar{p}} decays. The difference between the J/ψ{J/ψ} and ηc(1S)η_c(1S) masses is also determined to be 113.0±0.7±0.1 MeV{113.0 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.1\text{ MeV}}, which is the most precise single measurement of this quantity to date.

Measurement of the Λb0→J/ψΛΛ^0_b\rightarrow J/ψΛ angular distribution and the Λb0Λ^0_b polarisation in pppp collisions

This paper presents an analysis of the Λb0→J/ψΛΛ^0_b\rightarrow J/ψΛ angular distribution and the transverse production polarisation of Λb0Λ^0_b baryons in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb−1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb experiment. The polarisation is determined in a fiducial region of Λb0Λ^0_b transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of 1<pT<201 < p_{T} < 20 GeV/c/c and 2<η<52 < η< 5, respectively. The data are consistent with Λb0Λ^0_b baryons being produced unpolarised in this region. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter of the Λ→pπ−Λ\rightarrow pπ^- decay is also determined from the data and its value is found to be consistent with a recent measurement by the BES\,III collaboration.

Observation of a new baryon state in the Λb0π+π−Λ_b^0π^+π^- mass spectrum

A new baryon state is observed in the Λb0π+π−Λ_b^0π^+π^- mass spectrum with high significance using a data sample of pppp collisions, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies s=7,8\sqrt{s}=7, 8 and 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb−1^{-1}. The mass and natural width of the new state are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m & = & 6072.3 \pm 2.9 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.2 MeV\,, Γ& = & 72 \pm 11 \pm 2 MeV\,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The third uncertainty for the mass is due to imprecise knowledge of the Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon mass. The new state is consistent with the first radial excitation of the Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon, the Λb(2S)0Λ_b(2S)^0 resonance. Observation of new Ξc0Ξ_c^0 baryons decaying to Λc+K−Λ_c^+ K^-

The Λc+K−Λ_c^+K^- mass spectrum is studied with a data sample of pppp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. Three Ξc0Ξ_c^0 states are observed with a large significance and their masses and natural widths are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m(Ξ_c(2923)^0)&=& 2923.04 \pm 0.25 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.14 ~\mathrm{MeV}, Γ(Ξ_c(2923)^0) &=& 7.1 \pm 0.8 \pm 1.8 ~\mathrm{MeV}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} m(Ξ_c(2939)^0) &=& 2938.55 \pm 0.21 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.14 ~\mathrm{ MeV}, Γ(Ξ_c(2939)^0) &=& 10.2 \pm 0.8 \pm 1.1 ~\mathrm{ MeV}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} m(Ξ_c(2965)^0) &=& 2964.88 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.14~\mathrm{ MeV}, Γ(Ξ_c(2965)^0) &=& 14.1 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.3~\mathrm{ MeV}, \end{eqnarray*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the limited knowledge of the Λc+Λ_c^+ mass. The Ξc(2923)0Ξ_c(2923)^0 and Ξc(2939)0Ξ_c(2939)^0 baryons are new states. The Ξc(2965)0Ξ_c(2965)^0 state is in the vicinity of the known Ξc(2970)0Ξ_c(2970)^0 baryon; however, their masses and natural widths differ significantly.

Observation of new resonances in the Λb0π+π−Λ_{b}^0π^+π^- system

We report the observation of a new structure in the Λb0π+π−Λ_b^0 π^+π^- spectrum using the full LHCb data set of pppp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−19\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, collected at s=7\sqrt{s}=7, 8 and 13 TeV13\,\mathrm{TeV}. A study of the structure suggests its interpretation as a superposition of two almost degenerate narrow states. The masses and widths of these states are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6146)}^0} &=&6146.17 \pm 0.33 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.16\,\mathrm{MeV} \,, m_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6152)}^0} &=&6152.51 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.16\,\mathrm{MeV} \,, Γ_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6146)}^0}&=&\phantom{615}2.9\phantom{0}\pm 1.3\phantom{0} \pm 0.3\phantom{0}\,\mathrm{MeV}\,, Γ_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6152)}^0} &=&\phantom{615}2.1\phantom{0}\pm 0.8\phantom{0} \pm 0.3\phantom{0}\,\mathrm{MeV}\,, \end{eqnarray*} with a mass splitting of Δm=6.34±0.32±0.02 MeVΔm = 6.34 \pm 0.32 \pm 0.02\,\mathrm{MeV}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third derives from the knowledge of the mass of the Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon. The measured masses and widths of these new excited states suggest their possible interpretation as a doublet of Λb(1D)0Λ_{b}\mathrm{(1D)}^0 states.

Observation of several sources of CPCP violation in B+→π+π+π−B^+ \to π^+ π^+ π^- decays

Observations are reported of different sources of CPCP violation from an amplitude analysis of B+→π+π+π−B^+ \to π^+ π^+ π^- decays, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3  fb−13 \; {\rm fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. A large CPCP asymmetry is observed in the decay amplitude involving the tensor f2(1270)f_2(1270) resonance, and in addition significant CPCP violation is found in the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave at low invariant mass. The presence of CPCP violation related to interference between the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave and the P-wave B+→ρ(770)0π+B^+ \to ρ(770)^0 π^+ amplitude is also established; this causes large local asymmetries but cancels when integrated over the phase space of the decay. The results provide both qualitative and quantitative new insights into CPCP-violation effects in hadronic BB decays.

Observation of the semileptonic decay B+→pp‾μ+νμB^{+}\to p\overline{p}μ^{+}ν_μ

The Cabibbo-suppressed semileptonic decay B+→pp‾μ+νμB^{+}\to p\overline{p}μ^{+}ν_μ is observed for the first time using a sample of pppp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0, 2.0 and 1.7fb−1^{-1} at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13TeV, respectively. The differential branching fraction is measured as a function of the pp‾p\overline{p} invariant mass using the decay mode B+→J/ψK+B^{+}\to J/ψK^{+} for normalisation. The total branching fraction is measured to be \begin{align*} \mathcal{B}(B^{+}\to p\overline{p}μ^{+}ν_μ) = (5.27 ^{+0.23}_{-0.24} \pm 0.21 \pm 0.15)\times 10^{-6}, \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is from the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the normalisation channel.

Optical Transistor for an Amplification of Radiation in a Broadband THz Domain

We propose a new type of optical transistor for a broadband amplification of THz radiation. It is made of a graphene--superconductor hybrid, where electrons and Cooper pairs couple by Coulomb forces. The transistor operates via the propagation of surface plasmons in both layers, and the origin of amplification is the quantum capacitance of graphene. It leads to THz waves amplification, the negative power absorption, and as a result, the system yields positive gain, and the hybrid acts like an optical transistor, operating with the terahertz light. It can, in principle, amplify even a whole spectrum of chaotic signals (or noise), that is required for numerous biological applications.

Search for A′ ⁣→ ⁣μ+μ−A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^- decays

Searches are performed for both prompt-like and long-lived dark photons, A′A', produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. These searches look for A′ ⁣→ ⁣μ+μ−A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^- decays using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5/fb collected with the LHCb detector. Neither search finds evidence for a signal, and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the γγ-A′A' kinetic-mixing strength. The prompt-like A′A' search explores the mass region from near the dimuon threshold up to 70 GeV, and places the most stringent constraints to date on dark photons with 214<m(A′)≲740214 < m(A') \lesssim 740 MeV and 10.6<m(A′)≲3010.6 < m(A') \lesssim 30 GeV. Updated measurement of decay-time-dependent CP asymmetries in D0→K+K−D^0 \to K^+K^- and D0→π+π−D^0 \to π^+π^- decays

A search for decay-time-dependent charge-parity (CPCP) asymmetry in D0→K+K−D^0 \to K^+K^- and D0→π+π−D^0 \to π^+π^- decays is performed at the LHCb experiment using proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4fb−1^{-1}. The D0D^0 mesons are required to originate from semileptonic decays of bb hadrons, such that the charge of the muon identifies the flavor of the neutral DD meson at production. The asymmetries in the effective decay widths of D0D^0 and D‾0\overline{D}^0 mesons are determined to be AΓ(K+K−)=(−4.3±3.6±0.5)×10−4A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.3 \pm 3.6 \pm 0.5 )\times 10^{-4} and AΓ(π+π−)=(2.2±7.0±0.8)×10−4A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.2 \pm 7.0 \pm 0.8)\times 10^{-4}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The results are consistent with CPCP symmetry and, when combined with previous LHCb results, yield AΓ(K+K−)=(−4.4±2.3±0.6)×10−4A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.4 \pm 2.3 \pm 0.6 )\times 10^{-4} and AΓ(π+π−)=(2.5±4.3±0.7)×10−4A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.5 \pm 4.3 \pm 0.7)\times 10^{-4}.

Updated measurement of time-dependent CPCP-violating observables in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψK^+ K^- decays

The decay-time-dependent CPCP asymmetry in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψK^{+} K^{-} decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 fb−11.9\,\mathrm{fb^{-1}}, collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV13\,\mathrm{TeV} in 2015 and 2016. Using a sample of approximately 117\,000 signal decays with an invariant K+K−K^{+} K^{-} mass in the vicinity of the ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020) resonance, the CPCP-violating phase ϕsϕ_s is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the Bs0B^{0}_{s}-Bˉs0\bar{B}^{0}_{s} system, ΔΓsΔΓ_s. The difference of the average Bs0B^{0}_{s} and B0B^{0} meson decay widths, Γs−ΓdΓ_s-Γ_d, is determined using in addition a sample of B0→J/ψK+π−B^{0} \to J/ψK^{+} π^{-} decays. The values obtained are ϕs=−0.083±0.041±0.006 radϕ_s = -0.083\pm0.041\pm0.006\,\mathrm{rad}, ΔΓs=0.077±0.008±0.003 ps−1ΔΓ_s = 0.077 \pm 0.008 \pm 0.003\, \mathrm{ps^{-1}} and Γs−Γd=−0.0041±0.0024±0.0015 ps−1Γ_s-Γ_d = -0.0041 \pm 0.0024 \pm 0.0015\,\mathrm{ps^{-1}}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of these quantities to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with a previous LHCb analysis of this decay using data recorded at centre-of-mass energies 7 and 8 TeV. Finally, the results are combined with recent results from Bs0→J/ψπ+π−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψπ^{+} π^{-} decays obtained using the same dataset as this analysis, and with previous independent LHCb results.

Cosmological Solutions to the Lithium Problem

The abundance of primordial lithium is derived from the observed spectroscopy of metal-poor stars in the galactic halo. However, the observationally inferred abundance remains at about a factor of three below the abundance predicted by standard big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). The resolution of this dilemma can be either astrophysical (stars destroy lithium after BBN), nuclear (reactions destroy lithium during BBN), or cosmological, i.e. new physics beyond the standard BBN is responsible for destroying lithium. Here, we overview a variety of possible cosmological solutions, and their shortcomings. On the one hand, we examine the possibility of physical processes that modify the velocity distribution of particles from the usually assumed Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics. A physical justification for this is an inhomogeneous spatial distribution of domains of primordial magnetic field strength as a means to reduce the primordial lithium abundance. Another possibility is that scattering with the mildly relativistic electrons in the background plasma alters the baryon distribution to one resembling a Fermi-Dirac distribution. We show that neither of these possibilities can adequately resolve the lithium problem. A number of alternate hybrid models are discussed including a mix of neutrino degeneracy, unified dark matter, axion cooling, and the presence of decaying and/or charged supersymmetric particles.

High energy Coulomb-scattered electrons for relativistic particle beam diagnostics

A new system used for monitoring energetic Coulomb-scattered electrons as the main diagnostic for accurately aligning the electron and ion beams in the new Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) electron lenses is described in detail. The theory of electron scattering from relativistic ions is developed and applied to the design and implementation of the system used to achieve and maintain the alignment. Commissioning with gold and 3He beams is then described as well as the successful utilization of the new system during the 2015 RHIC polarized proton run. Systematic errors of the new method are then estimated. Finally, some possible future applications of Coulomb-scattered electrons for beam diagnostics are briefly discussed.

The gap of stellar mass in galaxy groups: another perspective of the Too-big-To-Fail problem in the Milky Way

The Milky Way presents the too-big-to-fail (TBTF) problem that there are two observed satellite galaxies with maximum circular velocity larger than 55km/s, and others have velocity less than 25km/s, but the cold dark matter model predicts there should be more than 10 subhaloes with velocity larger than 25km/s. Those massive subhaloes with 25km/s<Vmax<55km/s25km/s<V_{max}<55km/s should not have failed to form stars. The TBTF problem severely challenges the CDM model. Most efforts are seeking the effects of baryonic feedback, decreasing the mass of the Milky Way, changing the properties of dark matter, so as to assign the observed low-velocity satellites into the massive subhaloes found in simulations. However, the TBTF problem can be avoided if the MW have not accreted subhaloes with velocity between 25km/s<Vmax<55km/s25km/s<V_{max}<55km/s although the probability of such a gap is lower as ∼1%\sim 1\% and can not be tested against observations. In this work we study the gap in stellar mass of satellite galaxies using the SDSS group catalogue and a semi-analytical model. We find that there are 1-2\% of galaxy groups with a large gap in the stellar mass of their satellites. These 'big gap' groups have accreted less massive subhaloes in their formation history and naturally display a gap between their satellite galaxies. If extrapolating our results to the Milky Way is appropriate, we conclude that it is very likely that our Milky Way has not accreted enough massive subhaloes to host those low-velocity satellites, and the TBTF problem is naturally avoided.

Current-modulation annealing to control microwave permittivity in composites with melt-extracted microwires

We investigate the microwave properties of epoxy-based composite containing melt-extracted CoFeBSiNb microwires fabricated by a combined current-modulation annealing (CCMA) technique. We observe a shift of the resonance peak in the effective permittivity spectra of the composite sample containing annealed 25 mm Nb-doped microwires as an applied magnetic field is increased. This observation is consistent with the absorption-dominated impedance for thick microwires and the ferromagnetic resonance phenomenon. It is shown that CCMA is an appropriate technique to release internal residual stresses. Hence, for samples containing small amounts of Nb, we observe that CCMA allows us to suppress the high frequency resonance peak observed in samples containing as-cast wires. However, for samples containing a high amount of Nb, the high frequency peak remains despite the CCMA treatment. In this case, the observation of a two-peak feature in the permittivity spectra is attributed to the coexistence of the amorphous phase and a small amount of nanocrystallites distributed at the wire surface. However, due to large magnetostatic energy of long (35 mm) and short (15 mm) as-cast wires and imperfect wire-epoxy bonding no shift of the resonance peak and the characteristic double peak of the permittivity spectrum can be detected. Overall, CCMA emerges as a promising strategy to control microwave permittivity in composites with melt-extracted microwires.

Hybridized magnetic microwire metacomposites towards microwave cloaking and barcoding applications

The microwave behavior of polymer metacomposites containing parallel Fe-based and continuous/short-cut Co-based microwire arrays has been investigated. A magnetic field-tunable metacomposite feature has been identified in the dense continuous hybrid composite confirmed by the transmission windows in the frequency band of 1 to 3.5 GHz. The complex magnetically tuned redshift-blueshift evolution of the transmission window is reasoned to result from the competition between the dynamic wire-wire interaction and the ferromagnetic resonance of Fe-based wires. Increasing Co-based inter-wire spacing to 10 mm in the continuous hybrid composites, a remarkable dual-band transmission window in the 1.5-3.5 GHz and 9-17 GHz is respectively induced by the ferromagnetic resonance of Fe-based wires and the magnetic resonance arising between Fe-Co wire couples. The hybridization of parallel Fe-based and short-cut Co-based wires in the polymer composite leads to a significant enhancement of the transmission window in the frequency band of 1 to 6 GHz due to the band-stop nature of Co-based wires. The advanced hybridized microwire metacomposites are arguably demonstrated to be particularly attractive for microwave cloaking and radio frequency barcoding applications.

The First Data Release (DR1) of the LAMOST general survey

The Large sky Area Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) General Survey is a spectroscopic survey that will eventually cover approximately half of the celestial sphere and collect 10 million spectra of stars, galaxies and QSOs. Objects both in the pilot survey and the first year general survey are included in the LAMOST First Data Release (DR1). The pilot survey started in October 2011 and ended in June 2012, and the data have been released to the public as the LAMOST Pilot Data Release in August 2012. The general survey started in September 2012, and completed its first year of operation in June 2013. The LAMOST DR1 includes a total of 1202 plates containing 2,955,336 spectra, of which 1,790,879 spectra have observed signal-to-noise S/N >10. All data with S/N>2 are formally released as LAMOST DR1 under the LAMOST data policy. This data release contains a total of 2,204,696 spectra, of which 1,944,329 are stellar spectra, 12,082 are galaxy spectra and 5,017 are quasars. The DR1 includes not only spectra, but also three stellar catalogues with measured parameters: AFGK-type stars with high quality spectra (1,061,918 entries), A-type stars (100,073 entries), and M stars (121,522 entries). This paper introduces the survey design, the observational and instrumental limitations, data reduction and analysis, and some caveats. Description of the FITS structure of spectral files and parameter catalogues is also provided.

Thin-film based phase plates for transmission electron microscopy fabricated from metallic glasses

Thin-film based phase plates are meanwhile a widespread tool to enhance the contrast of weak-phase objects in transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The thin film usually consists of amorphous carbon, which suffers from quick degeneration under the intense electron-beam illumination. Recent investigations have focused on the search for alternative materials with an improved material stability. This work presents thin-film based phase plates fabricated from metallic glass alloys, which are characterized by a high electrical conductivity and an amorphous structure. Thin films of the zirconium-based alloy Zr65.0Al7.5Cu27.5 (ZAC) are prepared and their phase-shifting properties are tested. The ZAC-alloy film is investigated by different TEM techniques, which reveal a range of beneficial characteristics. Particularly favorable is the small probability for inelastic plasmon scattering, which is promising to improve the performance of thin-film based phase plates in phase-contrast TEM.

Beam-beam observations in the RHIC

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory has been in operation since 2000. Over the past decade, the luminosity in the polarized proton (p-p) operations has increased by more than one order of magnitude. The maximum total beam-beam tune shift with two collisions has reached 0.018. The beam-beam interaction leads to large tune spread, emittance growth, and short beam and luminosity lifetimes. In this article, we review the beam-beam observations during the previous RHIC p-p runs. The mechanism for particle loss is presented. The intra-beam scattering (IBS) contributions to emittance and bunch length growths are calculated and compared with the measurements. Finally, we will discuss current limits in the RHIC p-p operations and their solutions.

Coherent beam-beam experiments and implications for head-on compensation

In polarized proton operation in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) coherent beam-beam modes are routinely observed with beam transfer function measurements. These modes can become unstable under external excitation or in the presence of impedance. This becomes even more relevant in the presence of head-on compensation, which reduces the beam-beam tune spread and hence Landau damping. We report on experiments and simulations carried out to understand the impact of coherent modes on operation with electron lenses.

Dual-band metacomposites containing hybrid Fe and Co-based ferromagnetic microwires

We investigated the microwave properties of polymer based metacomposites containing hybridized parallel Fe- and Co-based microwire arrays. A dual-band left-handed feature was observed in the frequency bands of 1.5 to 5.5 GHz and 9 to 17 GHz, indicated by two transmission windows associated with ferromagnetic resonance of Fe-based microwires and long range dipolar resonance between the wire arrays. The plasma frequency after hybridization is significantly increased due to the enhanced effective diameter through the wire-wire interactions between the Fe- and Co- microwire couples. These results offer essential perspectives in designing the multi-band metamaterial for microwave applications such as sensors and cloaking devices.

In-situ microwave characterization of ferromagnetic microwires-filled polymer composites: a review

This review describes the emerging research area and relevant physics of polymer-based composites enabled by amorphous ferromagnetic microwires. Fruitful results ranging from their tunable magnetic field and mechanical stress properties and influences of direct current on their microwave behavior are displayed in addition to the brief analysis on the underlying physics. The multifunctionalities exhibited strongly imply a variety of potential applications such as structural health monitoring and high-performance sensors. This article underlines that the future challenge mainly lies in proper microwire tailoring in expectation of a better microwave performance of microwire composites

Metacomposite characteristics and their influential factors of polymer composites containing orthogonal ferromagnetic microwire arrays

The microwave properties of glass-fibers reinforced polymer composite embedded with an orthogonal array of Fe77Si10B10C3 microwires have been investigated. The composites containing orthogonal wire arrays display a remarkable transmission window in the frequency band of 1 to 6 GHz under zero external magnetic field indicating an intrinsic double-negative-index characteristic. The polymer matrices have proved to exert a synergistic effect on the microwave properties, which is responsible for the disappearance of the transmission windows when Ek is perpendicular to the glass fiber direction. The plasma frequency of the orthogonal microwire array composite is higher than that of the parallel microwire array with identical wire spacing; this could be attributed to the enhanced microwire-wave interaction induced by the axial electrical components on the additional layer of perpendicular wires. All these features make this new kind of orthogonal microwire composites promising for potential cloaking and sensing applications.

Six-dimensional weak-strong simulations of head-on beam-beam compensation in RHIC

To compensate the large beam-beam tune spread and beam-beam resonance driving terms in the polarized proton operation in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), we will introduce a low-energy DC electron beam into each ring to collide head-on with the opposing proton beam. The device to provide the electron beam is called an electron lens. In this article, using a 6-D weak-strong-beam-beam interaction simulation model, we investigate the effects of head-on beam-beam compensation with electron lenses on the proton beam dynamics in the RHIC 250 GeV polarized proton operation. This article is abridged from the published article [1].

Status of head-on beam-beam compensation in RHIC

In polarized proton operation, the performance of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is limited by the head-on beam-beam effect. To overcome this limitation, two electron lenses are under commissioning. We give an overview of head-on beam-beam compensation in general and in the specific design for RHIC, which is based on electron lenses. The status of installation and commissioning are presented along with plans for the future.

Measurement of the total cross section of uranium-uranium collisions at sNN=192.8\sqrt{s_{NN}}=192.8 GeV

Heavy ion cross sections totaling several hundred barns have been calculated previously for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These total cross sections are more than an order of magnitude larger than the geometric ion-ion cross sections primarily due to Bound-Free Pair Production (BFPP) and Electro-Magnetic Dissociation (EMD). Apart from a general interest in verifying the calculations experimentally, an accurate prediction of the losses created in the heavy ion collisions is of practical interest for the LHC, where some collision products are lost in cryogenically cooled magnets and have the potential to quench these magnets. In the 2012 RHIC run uranium ions collided with each other at sNN=192.8\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 192.8 GeV with nearly all beam losses due to collisions. This allows for the measurement of the total cross section, which agrees with the calculated cross section within the experimental error.

Resonant inelastic soft-x-ray scattering spectra at the N1s and C1s edges of poly(pyridine-2,5-diyl)

Resonant inelastic scattering measurements of poly(pyridine-2,5-diyl) have been performed at the N1s and C1s edges using synchrotron radiation. For comparison, molecular orbital calculations of the spectra have been carried out with the repeat unit as a model molecule of the polymer chain. The resonant emission spectra show depletion of the p electron bands which is consistent with symmetry selection and momentum conservation rules. The depletion is most obvious in the resonant inelastic scattering spectra of carbon while the nitrogen spectra are dominated by lone pair n orbital emission of s symmetry and are less excitation energy dependent. By comparing the measurements to calculations an isomeric dependence of the resonant spectra is found giving preference to two of the four possible isomers in the polymer.

The electronic structure of poly(pyridine-2,5-diyl) investigated by soft x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies

The electronic structure of the poly-pyridine conjugated polymer has been investigated by resonant and nonresonant inelastic X-ray scattering and X-ray absorption spectroscopies using synchrotron radiation. The measurements were made for both the carbon and nitrogen contents of the polymer. The analysis of the spectra has been carried out in comparison with molecular orbital calculations taking the repeat-unit cell as a model molecule of the polymer chain. The simulations indicate no significant differences in the absorption and in the non-resonant X-ray scattering spectra for the different isomeric geometries, while some isomeric dependence of the resonant spectra is predicted. The resonant emission spectra show depletion of the π electron bands in line with symmetry selection and momentum conservation rules. The effect is most vizual for the carbon spectra; the nitrogen spectra are dominated by lone pair n orbital emission of σ symmetry and are less frequency dependent.

Gluons and the quark sea at high energies: distributions, polarization, tomography

This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii) three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executive summary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews for each of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions on various aspects of the scientific opportunities presented by an EIC.

Negative refraction in natural ferromagnetic metals

It is generally believed that Veselago's criterion for negative refraction cannot be fulfilled in natural materials. However, considering imaginary parts of the permittivity (ε) and permeability (μ) and for metals at not too high frequencies the general condition for negative refraction becomes extremely simple: Re(μ) < 0 --> Re(n) < 0. Here we demonstrate experimentally that in such natural metals as pure Co and FeCo alloy the negative values of the refractive index are achieved close to the frequency of the ferromagnetic resonance. Large values of the negative refraction can be obtained at room temperature and they can easily be tuned in moderate magnetic fields.

Spin-triplet pairing in large nuclei

The nuclear pairing condensate is expected to change character from spin-singlet to spin-triplet when the nucleus is very large and the neutron and proton numbers Z,NZ,N are equal. We investigate the transition between these two phases within the framework of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations, using a zero-range interaction to generate the pairing. We confirm that extremely large nucleus would indeed favor triplet pairing condensates, with the Hamiltonian parameters taken from known systematics. The favored phase is found to depend on the specific orbitals at the Fermi energy. The smallest nuclei with a well-developed spin-triplet condensate are in the mass region A ~ 130-140.
