Topological manifold bundles and the $A$-theory assembly map

We give a new proof of an index theorem for fiber bundles of compact topological manifolds due to Dwyer, Weiss, and Williams, which asserts that the parametrized $A$-theory characteristic of such a fiber bundle factors canonically through the assembly map of $A$-theory. Furthermore our main result shows a refinement of this statement by providing such a factorization for an extended $A$-theory characteristic, defined on the parametrized topological cobordism category. The proof uses a convenient framework for bivariant theories and recent results of Gomez-Lopez and Kupers on the homotopy type of the topological cobordism category. We conjecture that this lift of the extended $A$-theory characteristic becomes highly connected as the manifold dimension increases.

Splitting the relative assembly map, Nil-terms and involutions

We show that the relative Farrell-Jones assembly map from the family of finite subgroups to the family of virtually cyclic subgroups for algebraic K-theory is split injective in the setting where the coefficients are additive categories with group action. This generalizes a result of Bartels for rings as coefficients. We give an explicit description of the relative term. This enables us to show that it vanishes rationally if we take coefficients in a regular ring. Moreover, it is, considered as a Z[Z/2]-module by the involution coming from taking dual modules, an extended module and in particular all its Tate cohomology groups vanish, provided that the infinite virtually cyclic subgroups of type I of G are orientable. The latter condition is for instance satisfied for torsionfree hyperbolic groups.

The space of metrics of positive scalar curvature

We study the topology of the space of positive scalar curvature metrics on high dimensional spheres and other spin manifolds. Our main result provides elements of infinite order in higher homotopy and homology groups of these spaces, which, in contrast to previous approaches, are of infinite order and survive in the (observer) moduli space of such metrics. Along the way we construct smooth fiber bundles over spheres whose total spaces have non-vanishing A-hat-genera, thus establishing the non-multiplicativity of the A-hat-genus in fibre bundles with simply connected base.

On the map of Bökstedt-Madsen from the cobordism category to $A$-theory

Bökstedt and Madsen defined an infinite loop map from the embedded $d$-dimensional cobordism category of Galatius, Madsen, Tillmann and Weiss to the algebraic $K$-theory of $BO(d)$ in the sense of Waldhausen. The purpose of this paper is to establish two results in relation to this map. The first result is that it extends the universal parametrized $A$-theory Euler characteristic of smooth bundles with compact $d$-dimensional fibers, as defined by Dwyer, Weiss and Williams. The second result is that it actually factors through the canonical unit map $Q(BO(d)_+) \to A(BO(d))$.

Homotopy coherent diagrams and approximate fibrations

Let p be a fibration over a finite simplicial complex, whose fibers have the homotopy type of finite simplicial complexes. Then p is equivalent to an approximate fibration whose total space is a compact ENR. The proof uses homotopy coherent diagrams and their homotopy colimits. We also comment on the simple homotopy type of the total space and give an application to the fibering of Hilbert cube manifolds.

Obstructions to stably fibering manifolds

Is a given map between compact topological manifolds homotopic to the projection map of a fiber bundle? In this paper obstructions to this question are introduced with values in higher algebraic K-theory. Their vanishing implies that the given map fibers stably. The methods also provide results for the corresponding uniqueness question; moreover they apply to the fibering of Hilbert cube manifolds, generalizing results by Chapman-Ferry.
