A vanishing theorem for tautological classes of aspherical manifolds

Tautological classes, or generalised Miller-Morita-Mumford classes, are basic characteristic classes of smooth fibre bundles, and have recently been used to describe the rational cohomology of classifying spaces of diffeomorphism groups for several types of manifolds. We show that rationally tautological classes depend only on the underlying topological block bundle, and use this to prove the vanishing of tautological classes for many bundles with fibre an aspherical manifold.

Groups and polytopes

In a series of papers the authors associated to an $L^2$-acyclic group $Γ$ an invariant $\mathcal{P}(Γ)$ that is a formal difference of polytopes in the vector space $H_1(Γ;\Bbb{R})$. This invariant is in particular defined for most 3-manifold groups, for most 2-generator 1-relator groups and for all free-by-cyclic groups. In most of the above cases the invariant can be viewed as an actual polytope. In this survey paper we will recall the definition of the polytope invariant $\mathcal{P}(Γ)$ and we state some of the main properties. We conclude with a list of open problems.

On complex highly regular embeddings and the extended Vassiliev conjecture

A continuous map C^d -> C^N is a complex k-regular embedding if any k pairwise distinct points in C^d are mapped by f into k complex linearly independent vectors in C^N. Our central result on complex k-regular embeddings extends results of Cohen & Handel (1978), Chisholm (1979) and Blagojevic, Lück & Ziegler (2013) on real k-regular embeddings: We give new lower bounds for the existence of complex k-regular embeddings. These are obtained by modifying the framework of Cohen & Handel (1978) and a study of Chern classes of complex regular representations. The main technical result, used for the study of the Chern classes, is an upper bound for the height of the cohomology of an unordered configuration space Furthermore, we give similar lower bounds for the existence of complex l-skew embeddings C^d -> C^N, for which we require that the images of the tangent spaces at any l distinct points are skew complex affine subspaces of C^N.

The L^2-Alexander torsion of 3-manifolds

We introduce $L^2$-Alexander torsions for 3-manifolds, which can be viewed as a generalization of the $L^2$-Alexander polynomial of Li--Zhang. We state the $L^2$-Alexander torsions for graph manifolds and we partially compute them for fibered manifolds. We furthermore show that given any irreducible 3-manifold there exists a coefficient system such that the corresponding $L^2$-torsion detects the Thurston norm.

The L^2-torsion function and the Thurston norm of 3-manifolds

Let M be an oriented irreducible 3-manifold with infinite fundamental group and empty or toroidal boundary. Consider any element ϕin the first cohomology of M with integral coefficients. Then one can define the ϕ-twisted L^2-torsion function of the universal covering which is a function from the set of positive real numbers to the set of real numbers. By earlier work of the second author and Schick the evaluation at t=1 determines the volume. In this paper we show that its degree, which is a number extracted from its asymptotic behavior at 0 and at infinity, agrees with the Thurston norm of ϕ.

Three flavors of twisted invariants of knots

The Alexander polynomial of a knot has been generalized in three different ways to give twisted invariants. The resulting invariants are usually referred to as twisted Alexander polynomials, higher-order Alexander polynomials and $L^2$-Alexander invariants of knots. We quickly recall the definitions and we summarize and compare some of their properties. We also report on work by the authors on $L^2$-Alexander torsions and we conclude the paper with several conjectures on $L^2$-Alexander torsions.

Euler Characteristics of Categories and Homotopy Colimits

In a previous article, we introduced notions of finiteness obstruction, Euler characteristic, and L^2-Euler characteristic for wide classes of categories. In this sequel, we prove the compatibility of those notions with homotopy colimits of I-indexed categories where I is any small category admitting a finite I-CW-model for its I-classifying space. Special cases of our Homotopy Colimit Formula include formulas for products, homotopy pushouts, homotopy orbits, and transport groupoids. We also apply our formulas to Haefliger complexes of groups, which extend Bass--Serre graphs of groups to higher dimensions. In particular, we obtain necessary conditions for developability of a finite complex of groups from an action of a finite group on a finite category without loops.

Finiteness obstructions and Euler characteristics of categories

We introduce notions of finiteness obstruction, Euler characteristic, L^2-Euler characteristic, and Möbius inversion for wide classes of categories. The finiteness obstruction of a category Gamma of type (FP) is a class in the projective class group K_0(RGamma); the functorial Euler characteristic and functorial L^2-Euler characteristic are respectively its RGamma-rank and L^2-rank. We also extend the second author's K-theoretic Möbius inversion from finite categories to quasi-finite categories. Our main example is the proper orbit category, for which these invariants are established notions in the geometry and topology of classifying spaces for proper group actions. Baez-Dolan's groupoid cardinality and Leinster's Euler characteristic are special cases of the L^2-Euler characteristic. Some of Leinster's results on Möbius-Rota inversion are special cases of the K-theoretic Möbius inversion.
