Extensions of derivations and symmetric operators

Given a densely defined skew-symmetric operators A 0 on a real or complex Hilbert space V , we parametrize all m-dissipative extensions in terms of contractions $Φ$ : H-$\rightarrow$ H + , where Hand H + are Hilbert spaces associated with a boundary quadruple. Such an extension generates a unitary C 0-group if and only if $Φ$ is a unitary operator. As corollary we obtain the parametrization of all selfadjoint extensions of a symmetric operator by unitary operators from Hto H +. Our results extend the theory of boundary triples initiated by von Neumann and developed by V. I. and M. L. Gorbachuk, J. Behrndt and M. Langer, S. A. Wegner and many others, in the sense that a boundary quadruple always exists (even if the defect indices are different in the symmetric case).

Lions' representation theorem and applications

The Representation Theorem of Lions (RTL) is a version of the Lax--Milgram Theorem where completeness of one of the spaces is not complete. In this paper, RTL is deduced from an operator-theoretical version on normed space. The main point of the paper is a theory of derivations, based on RTL, for which well-posedness is proved. One application concerns non-autonomous evolution equations with a new initial-value and a periodic boundary condition for the time variable.

Disjointness-preserving operators and isospectral Laplacians

All the known counterexamples to Kac' famous question "can one hear the shape of a drum", i.e., does isospectrality of two Laplacians on domains imply that the domains are congruent, consist of pairs of domains composed of copies of isometric building blocks arranged in different ways, such that the unitary operator intertwining the Laplacians acts as a sum of overlapping "local" isometries mapping the copies to each other. We prove and explore a complementary positive statement: if an operator intertwining two appropriate realisations of the Laplacian on a pair of domains preserves disjoint supports, then under additional assumptions on it generally far weaker than unitarity, the domains are congruent. We show this in particular for the Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin Laplacians on spaces of continuous functions and on $L^2$-spaces.

Galerkin approximation of linear problems in Banach and Hilbert spaces

In this paper we study the conforming Galerkin approximation of the problem: find u $\in$ U such that a(u, v) = <L, v> for all v $\in$ V, where U and V are Hilbert or Banach spaces, a is a continuous bilinear or sesquilinear form and L $\in$ V' a given data. The approximate solution is sought in a finite dimensional subspace of U, and test functions are taken in a finite dimensional subspace of V. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition on the form a for convergence of the Galerkin approximation, which is also equivalent to convergence of the Galerkin approximation for the adjoint problem. We also characterize the fact that U has a finite dimensional Schauder decomposition in terms of properties related to the Galerkin approximation. In the case of Hilbert spaces, we prove that the only bilinear or sesquilinear forms for which any Galerkin approximation converges (this property is called the universal Galerkin property) are the essentially coercive forms. In this case, a generalization of the Aubin-Nitsche Theorem leads to optimal a priori estimates in terms of regularity properties of the right-hand side L, as shown by several applications. Finally, a section entitled "Supplement" provides some consequences of our results for the approximation of saddle point problems.

Strict positivity for the principal eigenfunction of elliptic operators with various boundary conditions

We consider elliptic operators with measurable coefficients and Robin boundary conditions on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and show that the first eigenfunction $v$ satisfies $v(x) \ge δ> 0$ for all $x \in \overlineΩ$, even if the boundary $\partial Ω$ is only Lipschitz continuous. Under such weak regularity assumptions the Hopf-Ole\uınik boundary lemma is not available; instead we use a new approach based on an abstract positivity improving condition for semigroups that map $L_p(Ω)$ into $C(\overlineΩ)$. The same tool also yields corresponding results for Dirichlet or mixed boundary conditions. Finally, we show that our results can be used to derive strong minimum and maximum principles for parabolic and elliptic equations.

Maximal regularity for non-autonomous Robin boundary conditions

We consider a non-autonomous Cauchy problem involving linear operators associated with time-dependent forms $a(t;.,.):V\times V\to {\mathbb{C}}$ where $V$ and $H$ are Hilbert spaces such that $V$ is continuously embedded in $H$. We prove $H$-maximal regularity under a new regularity condition on the form $a$ with respect to time; namely H{ö}lder continuity with values in an interpolation space. This result is best suited to treat Robin boundary conditions. The maximal regularity allows one to use fixed point arguments to some non linear parabolic problems with Robin boundary conditions.

Maximal Regularity for Evolution Equations Governed by Non-Autonomous Forms

\begin{abstract}\label{abstract} We consider a non-autonomous evolutionary problem \[ \dot{u} (t)+\A(t)u(t)=f(t), \quad u(0)=u_0 \] where the operator $\A(t):V\to V^\prime$ is associated with a form $\fra(t,.,.):V\times V \to \R$ and $u_0\in V$. Our main concern is to prove well-posedness with maximal regularity which means the following. Given a Hilbert space $H$ such that $V$ is continuously and densely embedded into $H$ and given $f\in L^2(0,T;H)$ we are interested in solutions $u \in H^1(0,T;H)\cap L^2(0,T;V)$. We do prove well-posedness in this sense whenever the form is piecewise Lipschitz-continuous and symmetric. Moreover, we show that each solution is in $C([0,T];V)$. We apply the results to non-autonomous Robin-boundary conditions and also use maximal regularity to solve a quasilinear problem.

Diffusion in networks with time-dependent transmission conditions

We study diffusion in a network which is governed by non-autonomous Kirchhoff conditions at the vertices of the graph. Also the diffusion coefficients may depend on time. We prove at first a result on existence and uniqueness using form methods. Our main results concern the long-term behavior of the solution. In the case when the conductivity and the diffusion coefficients match (so that mass is conserved) we show that the solution converges exponentially fast to an equilibrium. We also show convergence to a special solution in some other cases.

Invariance of Convex Sets for Non-autonomous Evolution Equations Governed by Forms

We consider a non-autonomous form $\fra:[0,T]\times V\times V \to \C$ where $V$ is a Hilbert space which is densely and continuously embedded in another Hilbert space $H$. Denote by $\A(t) \in Ł(V,V')$ the associated operator. Given $f \in L^2(0,T, V')$, one knows that for each $u_0 \in H$ there is a unique solution $u\in H^1(0,T;V')\cap L^2(0,T;V)$ of $$\dot u(t) + \A(t) u(t) = f(t), \, \, u(0) = u_0.$$ %\begin{align*} %&\dot u(t) + \A(t)u(t)= f(t)\ %& u(0)=u_0. %\end{align*} This result by J. L. Lions is well-known. The aim of this article is to find a criterion for the invariance of a closed convex subset $\Conv$ of $H$; i.e.\ we give a criterion on the form which implies that $u(t)\in \Conv$ for all $t\in[0,T]$ whenever $u_0\in\Conv$. In the autonomous case for $f = 0$, the criterion is known and even equivalent to invariance by a result proved in \cite{Ouh96} (see also \cite{Ouh05}). We give applications to positivity and comparison of solutions to heat equations with non-autonomous Robin boundary conditions. We also prove positivity of the solution to a quasi-linear heat equation.

From forms to semigroups

Form methods give a very efficient tool to solve evolutionary problems on Hilbert space. They were developed by T. Kato [Kat] and, in slightly different language by J.L. Lions. In this expository article we give an introduction based on [AE2]. The main point in our approach is that the notion of closability is not needed anymore. The new setting is particularly efficient for the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator and degenerate equations. Besides this we give several other examples. This presentation starts by an introduction to holomorphic semigroups. Instead of the contour argument found in the literature, we give a more direct argument based on the Hille--Yosida theorem.

Semigroups Generated by Elliptic Operators in Non-Divergence Form on $C_0(/omega)$

Given a bounded domain in the Euclidean space satisfying the uniform outer cone condition, we show that a uniformly elliptic operator of second order with continuous second order coefficients generates a holomorphic semigroup on the space of all continuous functions vanishing at the boundary. In particular, Lipschitz domains are allowed. This result was so far known under considerable stronger regularity assumptions. Also the Dirichlet problem is considered for such operators.
