Non-Autonomous Forms and Invariance

We generalize the Beurling--Deny--Ouhabaz criterion for parabolic evolution equations governed by forms to the non-autonomous, non-homogeneous and semilinear case. Let $V, H$ are Hilbert spaces such that $V$ is continuously and densely embedded in $H$ and let $\mathcal{A}(t)\colon V\to V^\prime$ be the operator associated with a bounded $H$-elliptic form $\mathfrak{a}(t,.,.)\colon V\times V \to \mathbb{C}$ for all $t \in [0,T]$. Suppose $\mathcal{C} \subset H$ is closed and convex and $P \colon H \to H$ the orthogonal projection onto $\mathcal{C}$. Given $f \in L^2(0,T;V')$ and $u_0\in \mathcal{C}$, we investigate whenever the solution of the non-autonomous evolutionary problem \[ u'(t)+\mathcal{A}(t)u(t)=f(t), \quad u(0)=u_0, \] remains in $\mathcal{C}$ and show that this is the case if Pu(t) \in V \quad \text{and} \quad \operatorname{Re} \mathfrak{a}(t,Pu(t),u(t)-Pu(t)) \ge \operatorname{Re} \langle f(t), u(t)-Pu(t) \rangle for a.e.\ $t \in [0,T]$. Moreover, we examine necessity of this condition and apply this result to a semilinear problem.

Non-Autonomous Maximal Regularity in Hilbert Spaces

We consider non-autonomous evolutionary problems of the form $u'(t)+A(t)u(t)=f(t)$, $u(0)=u_0,$ on $L^2([0,T];H)$, where $H$ is a Hilbert space. We do not assume that the domain of the operator $A(t)$ is constant in time $t$, but that $A(t)$ is associated with a sesquilinear form $a(t)$. Under sufficient time regularity of the forms $a(t)$ we prove well-posedness with maximal regularity in $L^2([0,T];H)$. Our regularity assumption is significantly weaker than those from previous results inasmuch as we only require a fractional Sobolev regularity with arbitrary small Sobolev index.

Maximal Regularity for Evolution Equations Governed by Non-Autonomous Forms

\begin{abstract}\label{abstract} We consider a non-autonomous evolutionary problem \[ \dot{u} (t)+\A(t)u(t)=f(t), \quad u(0)=u_0 \] where the operator $\A(t):V\to V^\prime$ is associated with a form $\fra(t,.,.):V\times V \to \R$ and $u_0\in V$. Our main concern is to prove well-posedness with maximal regularity which means the following. Given a Hilbert space $H$ such that $V$ is continuously and densely embedded into $H$ and given $f\in L^2(0,T;H)$ we are interested in solutions $u \in H^1(0,T;H)\cap L^2(0,T;V)$. We do prove well-posedness in this sense whenever the form is piecewise Lipschitz-continuous and symmetric. Moreover, we show that each solution is in $C([0,T];V)$. We apply the results to non-autonomous Robin-boundary conditions and also use maximal regularity to solve a quasilinear problem.

Non-Autonomous Maximal Regularity for Forms of Bounded Variation

We consider a non-autonomous evolutionary problem \[ u' (t)+\mathcal A (t)u(t)=f(t), \quad u(0)=u_0, \] where $V, H$ are Hilbert spaces such that $V$ is continuously and densely embedded in $H$ and the operator $\mathcal A (t)\colon V\to V^\prime$ is associated with a coercive, bounded, symmetric form $\mathfrak{a}(t,.,.)\colon V\times V \to \mathbb{C}$ for all $t \in [0,T]$. Given $f \in L^2(0,T;H)$, $u_0\in V$ there exists always a unique solution $u \in MR(V,V'):= L^2(0,T;V) \cap H^1(0,T;V')$. The purpose of this article is to investigate when $u \in H^1(0,T;H)$. This property of maximal regularity in $H$ is not known in general. We give a positive answer if the form is of bounded variation; i.e., if there exists a bounded and non-decreasing function $g \colon [0,T] \to \mathbb{R}$ such that \begin{equation*} \lvert\mathfrak{a}(t,u,v)- \mathfrak{a}(s,u,v)\rvert \le [g(t)-g(s)] \lVert u \rVert_V \lVert v \rVert_V \quad (s,t \in [0,T], s \le t). \end{equation*} In that case, we also show that $u(.)$ is continuous with values in $V$. Moreover we extend this result to certain perturbations of $\mathcal A (t)$.

Diffusion in networks with time-dependent transmission conditions

We study diffusion in a network which is governed by non-autonomous Kirchhoff conditions at the vertices of the graph. Also the diffusion coefficients may depend on time. We prove at first a result on existence and uniqueness using form methods. Our main results concern the long-term behavior of the solution. In the case when the conductivity and the diffusion coefficients match (so that mass is conserved) we show that the solution converges exponentially fast to an equilibrium. We also show convergence to a special solution in some other cases.

Invariance of Convex Sets for Non-autonomous Evolution Equations Governed by Forms

We consider a non-autonomous form $\fra:[0,T]\times V\times V \to \C$ where $V$ is a Hilbert space which is densely and continuously embedded in another Hilbert space $H$. Denote by $\A(t) \in Ł(V,V')$ the associated operator. Given $f \in L^2(0,T, V')$, one knows that for each $u_0 \in H$ there is a unique solution $u\in H^1(0,T;V')\cap L^2(0,T;V)$ of $$\dot u(t) + \A(t) u(t) = f(t), \, \, u(0) = u_0.$$ %\begin{align*} %&\dot u(t) + \A(t)u(t)= f(t)\ %& u(0)=u_0. %\end{align*} This result by J. L. Lions is well-known. The aim of this article is to find a criterion for the invariance of a closed convex subset $\Conv$ of $H$; i.e.\ we give a criterion on the form which implies that $u(t)\in \Conv$ for all $t\in[0,T]$ whenever $u_0\in\Conv$. In the autonomous case for $f = 0$, the criterion is known and even equivalent to invariance by a result proved in \cite{Ouh96} (see also \cite{Ouh05}). We give applications to positivity and comparison of solutions to heat equations with non-autonomous Robin boundary conditions. We also prove positivity of the solution to a quasi-linear heat equation.

Maximal Regularity for Non-Autonomous Second Order Cauchy Problems

We consider non-autonomous wave equations \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} \&\ddot u(t) + \B(t)\dot u(t) + \A(t)u(t) = f(t) \quad t\text{-a.e.}\\ \&u(0)=u_0,\, \dot u(0) = u_1. \end{aligned} \right. \] where the operators $\A(t)$ and $\B(t)$ are associated with time-dependent sesquilinear forms $\fra(t,.,.)$ and $\frb$ defined on a Hilbert space $H$ with the same domain $V$. The initial values satisfy $ u_0 \in V$ and $u_1 \in H$. We prove well-posedness and maximal regularity for the solution both in the spaces $V'$ and $H$. We apply the results to non-autonomous Robin-boundary conditions and also use maximal regularity to solve a quasilinear problem.
