Hereditarily indecomposable continua as generic mathematical structures

We characterize the pseudo-arc as well as P-adic pseudo-solenoids (for a set of primes P) as generic structures, arising from a natural game in which two players alternate in building an inverse sequence of surjections. The second player wins if the limit of this sequence is homeomorphic to a concrete (fixed in advance) space, called generic whenever the second player has a winning strategy. For this purpose, we develop a new robust approximate Fraïssé theory in the context of MU-categories, a generalization of metric-enriched categories, suitable for working directly with continuous maps between metrizable compacta. Our framework extends both the classical and projective Fraïssé theories. We reprove the Fraïssé-theoretic characterization of the pseudo-arc and we realize every P-adic pseudo-solenoid as a Fraïssé limit of a suitable category of continuous surjections on the circle. Moreover, we show that, when playing the game with continuous surjections between non-degenerate Peano continua, the pseudo-arc is always generic, while the universal pseudo-solenoid is generic over all surjections between circle-like continua. This gives a complete classification of generic continua over full non-trivial subcategories of connected polyhedra with continuous surjections.

Homogeneity of abstract linear spaces

We discuss homogeneity and universality issues in the theory of abstract linear spaces, namely, structures with points and lines satisfying natural axioms, as in Euclidean or projective geometry. We show that the two smallest projective planes (including the Fano plane) are homogeneous and, assuming the continuum hypothesis, there exists a universal projective plane of cardinality $\aleph_1$ that is homogeneous with respect to its countable and finite projective subplanes. We also show that the existence of a generic countable linear space is equivalent to an old conjecture asserting that every finite linear space embeds into a finite projective plane.

The Lelek fan and the Poulsen simplex as Fraïssé limits

We describe the Lelek fan, a smooth fan whose set of end-points is dense, and the Poulsen simplex, a Choquet simplex whose set of extreme points is dense, as Fraïssé limits in certain natural categories of embeddings and projections. As an application we give a short proof of their uniqueness, universality, and almost homogeneity. We further show that for every two countable dense subsets of end-points of the Lelek fan there exists an auto-homeomorphism of the fan mapping one set onto the other. This improves a result of Kawamura, Oversteegen, and Tymchatyn from 1996.

Compact spaces, lattices, and absoluteness: a survey

Given a compact space in a fixed universe of set theory, one can naturally define its interpretation in any ZFC extension of the universe. We investigate the stability of some classes of compact spaces with respect to extensions of this sort. We show that the class of Eberlein/Gul'ko compacta is stable (= absolute). On the other hand, there are examples of Corson compacta which are no longer Corson in some forcing extensions. All the material comes from the author's notes written between 2004 -- 2006.

Quasi-Banach spaces of almost universal disposition

We show that for each $p\in(0,1]$ there exists a separable $p$-Banach space $\mathbb G_p$ of almost universal disposition, that is, having the following extension property: for each $ε>0$ and each isometric embedding $g:X\to Y$, where $Y$ is a finite dimensional $p$-Banach space and $X$ is a subspace of $\mathbb G_p$, there is an $ε$-isometry $f:Y\to \mathbb G_p$ such that $x=f(g(x))$ for all $x\in X$. Such a space is unique, up to isometries, does contain an isometric copy of each separable $p$-Banach space and has the remarkable property of being "locally injective" amongst $p$-Banach spaces. We also present a nonseparable generalization which is of universal disposition for separable spaces and "separably injective". No separably injective $p$-Banach space was previously known for $p<1$.

Almost disjoint families of countable sets and separable complementation properties

We study the separable complementation property (SCP) and its natural variations in Banach spaces of continuous functions over compacta $K_{\mathcal A}$ induced by almost disjoint families ${\mathcal A}$ of countable subsets of uncountable sets. For these spaces, we prove among others that $C(K_{\mathcal A})$ has the controlled variant of the separable complementation property if and only if $C(K_{\mathcal A})$ is Lindelöf in the weak topology if and only if $K_{\mathcal A}$ is monolithic. We give an example of ${\mathcal A}$ for which $C(K_{\mathcal A})$ has the SCP, while $K_{\mathcal A}$ is not monolithic and an example of a space $C(K_{\mathcal A})$ with controlled and continuous SCP which has neither a projectional skeleton nor a projectional resolution of the identity. Finally, we describe the structure of almost disjoint families of cardinality $ω_1$ which induce monolithic spaces of the form $K_{\mathcal A}$: They can be obtained from countably many ladder systems and pairwise disjoint families applying simple operations.

Dualities between finitely separated structures

We study dualities between classes of relational topological structures, given by Hom-functors. We show that there exists a 2-element structure with infinitely many relations, which reconstructs all other structures generated by a 2-element one. As an application, we find a natural duality for the class of normal convexity structures. As another application, we give short proofs for several known dualities for classes of structures generated by a fixed 2-element structure.

Remarks on Gurarii spaces

We present selected known results and some of their improvements, involving Gurarii spaces. A Banach space is Gurarii if it has certain natural extension property for almost isometric embeddings of finite-dimensional spaces. Deleting the word "almost", we get the notion of a strong Gurarii space. There exists a unique (up to isometry) separable Gurarii space, however strong Gurarii spaces cannot be separable. The structure of the class of non-separable Gurarii spaces seems to be not very well understood. We discuss some of their properties and state some open questions. In particular, we characterize non-separable Gurarii spaces in terms of skeletons of separable subspaces, we construct a non-separable Gurarii space with a projectional resolution of the identity and we show that no strong Gurarii space can be weakly Lindelöf determined.

A decomposition theorem for compact groups with application to supercompactness

We show that every compact connected group is the limit of a continuous inverse sequence, in the category of compact groups, where each successor bonding map is either an epimorphism with finite kernel or the projection from a product by a simple compact Lie group. As an application, we present a proof of an unpublished result of Charles Mills from 1978: every compact group is supercompact.

Covering an uncountable square by countably many continuous functions

We prove that there exists a countable family of continuous real functions whose graphs together with their inverses cover an uncountable square, i.e. a set of the form $X\times X$, where $X$ is an uncountable subset of the real line. This extends Sierpiński's theorem from 1919, saying that $S\times S$ can be covered by countably many graphs of functions and inverses of functions if and only if the size of $S$ does not exceed $\aleph_1$. Our result is also motivated by Shelah's study of planar Borel sets without perfect rectangles.

Banach spaces with projectional skeletons

A projectional skeleton in a Banach space is a sigma-directed family of projections onto separable subspaces, covering the entire space. The class of Banach spaces with projectional skeletons is strictly larger than the class of Plichko spaces (i.e. Banach spaces with a countably norming Markushevich basis). We show that every space with a projectional skeleton has a projectional resolution of the identity and has a norming space with similar properties to Sigma-spaces. We characterize the existence of a projectional skeleton in terms of elementary substructures, providing simple proofs of known results concerning weakly compactly generated spaces and Plichko spaces. We prove a preservation result for Plichko Banach spaces, involving transfinite sequences of projections. As a corollary, we show that a Banach space is Plichko if and only if it has a commutative projectional skeleton.

Free Boolean algebras over unions of two well orderings

Given a partially ordered set $P$ there exists the most general Boolean algebra $F(P)$ which contains $P$ as a generating set, called the {\it free Boolean algebra} over $P$. We study free Boolean algebras over posets of the form $P=P_0\cup P_1$, where $P_0,P_1$ are well orderings. We call them {\it nearly ordinal algebras}. Answering a question of Maurice Pouzet, we show that for every uncountable cardinal $κ$ there are $2^κ$ pairwise non-isomorphic nearly ordinal algebras of cardinality $κ$. Topologically, free Boolean algebras over posets correspond to compact 0-dimensional distributive lattices. In this context, we classify all closed sublattices of the product $(ω_1+1)\times(ω_1+1)$, thus showing that there are only $\aleph_1$ many of them. In contrast with the last result, we show that there are $2^{\aleph_1}$ topological types of closed subsets of the Tikhonov plank $(ω_1+1)\times(ω+1)$.
