Inter-qubit correlation dynamics driven by mutual interactions

A particularly useful tool for characterizing multi-qubit systems is the correlation tensor, providing an experimentally friendly and theoretically concise representation of quantum states. In this work, we analyze the evolution of the correlation tensor elements of quantum systems composed of $\frac12$-spins, generated by mutual interactions and the influence of the external field. We focus on two-body interactions in the form of anisotropic Heisenberg as well as antisymmetric exchange interaction models. The evolution of the system is visualized in the form of a trajectory in a suitable correlation space, which, depending on the system's frequencies, exhibits periodic or nonperiodic behavior. In the case of two $\frac12$-spins we study the stationary correlations for several classes of Hamiltonians, which allows a full characterization of the families of density matrices invariant under the evolution generated by the Hamiltonians. We discuss some common properties shared by the 2- and 3-qubit systems and show how a strong external field can play a stabilizing factor with respect to certain correlation characteristics.

A classification of orbits admitting a unique invariant measure

We consider the space of countable structures with fixed underlying set in a given countable language. We show that the number of ergodic probability measures on this space that are $S_\infty$-invariant and concentrated on a single isomorphism class must be zero, or one, or continuum. Further, such an isomorphism class admits a unique $S_\infty$-invariant probability measure precisely when the structure is highly homogeneous; by a result of Peter J. Cameron, these are the structures that are interdefinable with one of the five reducts of the rational linear order $(\mathbb{Q}, <)$.

The Lelek fan and the Poulsen simplex as Fraïssé limits

We describe the Lelek fan, a smooth fan whose set of end-points is dense, and the Poulsen simplex, a Choquet simplex whose set of extreme points is dense, as Fraïssé limits in certain natural categories of embeddings and projections. As an application we give a short proof of their uniqueness, universality, and almost homogeneity. We further show that for every two countable dense subsets of end-points of the Lelek fan there exists an auto-homeomorphism of the fan mapping one set onto the other. This improves a result of Kawamura, Oversteegen, and Tymchatyn from 1996.

Lelek fan from a projective Fraisse limit

We show that a natural quotient of the projective Fraisse limit of a family that consists of finite rooted trees is the Lelek fan. Using this construction, we study properties of the Lelek fan and of its homeomorphism group. We show that the Lelek fan is projectively universal and projectively ultrahomogeneous in the class of smooth fans. We further show that the homeomorphism group of the Lelek fan is totally disconnected, generated by every neighbourhood of the identity, has a dense conjugacy class, and is simple.

An introduction to hyperlinear and sofic groups

This is an edited write-up of lecture notes of the 7-th Appalachian set theory workshop of the same title led by the first named author at the Cornell University on November 22, 2008. A draft version of the notes was prepared by the second named author. This presentation is largely complementary to the earlier survey by the first-named author (Hyperlinear and sofic groups: a brief guide, Bull. Symb. Logic 14 (2008), pp. 449-480; arXiv:0804.3968v8 [math.GR]).

The group of homeomorphisms of the Cantor set has ample generics

We show that the group of homeomorphisms of the Cantor set $H(K)$ has ample generics, that is, for every $m$ the diagonal conjugacy action $g\cdot(h_1,h_2,..., h_m)=(gh_1g^{-1},gh_2g^{-1},..., gh_mg^{-1})$ of $H(K)$ on $H(K)^m$ has a comeager orbit. This answers a question of Kechris and Rosendal. We show that the generic tuple in $H(K)^m$ can be taken to be the limit of a certain projective Fraisse family. We also present a proof of the existence of the generic homeomorphism of the Cantor set in the context of the projective Fraisse theory.
