Unravelling the Nature of Spin Excitations Disentangled from Charge Contributions in a Doped Cuprate Superconductor

The nature of the spin excitations in superconducting cuprates is a key question toward a unified understanding of the cuprate physics from long-range antiferromagnetism to superconductivity. The intense spin excitations up to the over-doped regime revealed by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering bring new insights as well as questions like how to understand their persistence or their relation to the collective excitations in ordered magnets (magnons). Here, we study the evolution of the spin excitations upon hole-doping the superconducting cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ by disentangling the spin from the charge excitations in the experimental cross section. We compare our experimental results against density matrix renormalization group calculations for a $t$-$J$-like model on a square lattice. Our results unambiguously confirm the persistence of the spin excitations, which are closely connected to the persistence of short-range magnetic correlations up to high doping. This suggests that the spin excitations in hole-doped cuprates are related to magnons -- albeit short-ranged.

Nematic fluctuations in the non-superconducting iron pnictide BaFe$_{1.9-x}$Ni$_{0.1}$Cr$_{x}$As$_{2}$

The main driven force of the electronic nematic phase in iron-based superconductors is still under debate. Here, we report a comprehensive study on the nematic fluctuations in a non-superconducting iron pnictide system BaFe$_{1.9-x}$Ni$_{0.1}$Cr$_{x}$As$_{2}$ by electronic transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. Previous neutron diffraction and transport measurements suggested that the collinear antiferromagnetism persists to $x=0.8$, with similar Néel temperature $T_N$ and structural transition temperature $T_s$ around 32 K, but the charge carriers change from electron type to hole type around $x=$ 0.5. In this study, we have found that the in-plane resistivity anisotropy also highly depends on the Cr dopings and the type of charge carriers. While ARPES measurements suggest possibly weak orbital anisotropy onset near $T_s$ for both $x=0.05$ and $x=0.5$ compounds, INS experiments reveal clearly different onset temperatures of low-energy spin excitation anisotropy, which is likely related to the energy scale of spin nematicity. These results suggest that the interplay between the local spins on Fe atoms and the itinerant electrons on Fermi surfaces is crucial to the nematic fluctuations of iron pnictides, where the orbital degree of freedom may behave differently from the spin degree of freedom, and the transport properties are intimately related to the spin dynamics.

An asymptotic vanishing theorem for the cohomology of thickenings

Let $X$ be a closed equidimensional local complete intersection subscheme of a smooth projective scheme $Y$ over a field, and let $X_t$ denote the $t$-th thickening of $X$ in $Y$. Fix an ample line bundle $\mathcal{O}_Y(1)$ on $Y$. We prove the following asymptotic formulation of the Kodaira vanishing theorem: there exists an integer $c$, such that for all integers $t \geqslant 1$, the cohomology group $H^k(X_t,\mathcal{O}_{X_t}(j))$ vanishes for $k < \dim X$ and $j < -ct$. Note that there are no restrictions on the characteristic of the field, or on the singular locus of $X$. We also construct examples illustrating that a linear bound is indeed the best possible, and that the constant $c$ is unbounded, even in a fixed dimension.

Dispersionless orbital excitations in (Li,Fe)OHFeSe superconductors

The superconducting critical temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of intercalated iron-selenide superconductor (Li,Fe)OHFeSe (FeSe11111) can be increased to 42 K from 8 K of bulk FeSe. It shows remarkably similar electronic properties as the high-$T_{\mathrm{c}}$ monolayer FeSe and provides a bulk counterpart to investigate the origin of enhanced superconductivity. Unraveling the nature of excitations is crucial for understanding the pairing mechanism in high-$T_{\mathrm{c}}$ iron selenides. Here we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to investigate the excitations in FeSe11111. Our high-quality data exhibit several Raman-like excitations, which are dispersionless and isotropic in momentum transfer and robust against varying $T_{\mathrm{c}}$. Using atomic multiplet calculations, we assign the low-energy $\sim 0.3$ and 0.7 eV Raman peaks as local $e_g-e_g$ and $e_g-t_{2g}$ orbital excitations. The intensity of these two features decreases with increasing temperature, suggesting a primary contribution of the orbital fluctuations. Our results highlight the importance of orbital degree of freedom for high-$T_{\mathrm{c}}$ iron selenides.

Spin-excitation anisotropy in the nematic state of detwinned FeSe

The origin of the electronic nematicity in FeSe is one of the most important unresolved puzzles in the study of iron-based superconductors. In both spin- and orbital-nematic models, the intrinsic magnetic excitations at $\mathbf{Q}_1=(1, 0)$ and $\mathbf{Q}_2=(0, 1)$ of twin-free FeSe are expected to provide decisive criteria for clarifying this issue. Although a spin-fluctuation anisotropy below 10 meV between $\mathbf{Q}_1$ and $\mathbf{Q}_2$ has been observed by inelastic neutron scattering around $T_c\sim 9$ K ($<<T_s\sim 90$ K), it remains unclear whether such an anisotropy also persists at higher energies and associates with the nematic transition $T_{\rm s}$. Here we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to probe the high-energy magnetic excitations of uniaxial-strain detwinned FeSe and {\BFA}. A prominent anisotropy between the magnetic excitations along the $H$ and $K$ directions is found to persist to $\sim200$ meV in FeSe, which is even more pronounced than the anisotropy of spin waves in {\BFA}. This anisotropy decreases gradually with increasing temperature and finally vanishes at a temperature around the nematic transition temperature $T_{\rm s}$. Our results reveal an unprecedented strong spin-excitation anisotropy with a large energy scale well above the $d_{xz}/d_{yz}$ orbital splitting, suggesting that the nematic phase transition is primarily spin-driven. Moreover, the measured high-energy spin excitations are dispersive and underdamped, which can be understood from a local-moment perspective. Our findings provide the much-needed understanding of the mechanism for the nematicity of FeSe and points to a unified description of the correlation physics across seemingly distinct classes of Fe-based superconductors.

Stabilization of the cohomology of thickenings

For a local complete intersection subvariety $X=V({\mathcal I})$ in ${\mathbb P}^n$ over a field of characteristic zero, we show that, in cohomological degrees smaller than the codimension of the singular locus of $X$, the cohomology of vector bundles on the formal completion of ${\mathbb P}^n$ along $X$ can be effectively computed as the cohomology on any sufficiently high thickening $X_t=V({\mathcal I^t})$; the main ingredient here is a positivity result for the normal bundle of $X$. Furthermore, we show that the Kodaira vanishing theorem holds for all thickenings $X_t$ in the same range of cohomological degrees; this extends the known version of Kodaira vanishing on $X$, and the main new ingredient is a version of the Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano vanishing theorem for $X$, formulated in terms of the cotangent complex.

Thickness identification of thin InSe by optical microscopy methods

Indium selenide (InSe), as a novel van der Waals layered semiconductor, has attracted a large research interest thanks to its excellent optical and electrical properties in the ultra-thin limit. Here, we discuss four different optical methods to quantitatively identify the thickness of thin InSe flakes on various substrates, such as SiO2/Si or transparent polymeric substrates. In the case of thin InSe deposited on a transparent substrate, the transmittance of the flake in the blue region of the visible spectrum can be used to estimate the thickness. For InSe supported by SiO2/Si, the thickness of the flakes can be estimated either by assessing their apparent colors or accurately analyzed using a Fresnel-law based fitting model of the optical contrast spectra. Finally, we also studied the thickness dependency of the InSe photoluminescence emission energy, which provides an additional tool to estimate the InSe thickness and it works both for InSe deposited on SiO2/Si and on a transparent polymeric substrate.

Uniaxial $c$-axis pressure effects on underdoped BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.72}$P$_{0.28}$)$_2$ superconductor

The optimal superconductivity ($T_c \approx 30 $ K) in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ can be reached when the coupled antiferromagnetic (AF) order ($T_N$) and orthorhombic lattice distortion ($T_s$) are suppressed to zero temperature with increasing of P concentration or hydrostatic pressure. Here we use transport and neutron scattering to study the $c$-axis pressure effects on electronic phases in underdoped BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.72}$P$_{0.28}$)$_2$, which has $T_N = T_s\approx 40$ K and $T_c \approx $ 28 K at zero pressure. With increasing $c$-axis pressure, $T_N$ and $T_s$ are slightly enhanced around $P_c \sim 20 $ MPa. Upon further increasing pressure, AF order is gradually suppressed to zero, while $T_c$ is enhanced to 30 K. Our results reveal the importance of magnetoelastic couplings in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$, suggesting that the $c$-axis pressure can be used as a tuning parameter to manipulate the electronic phases in iron pnictides.

c-axis pressure induced antiferromagnetic order in optimally P-doped BaFe2(As0.70P0.30)2 superconductor

Superconductivity in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 iron pnictides emerges when its in-plane two-dimensional (2D) orthorhombic lattice distortion associated with nematic phase at Ts and three-dimensional (3D) collinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order at TN (Ts = TN) are gradually suppressed with increasing x, reaching optimal superconductivity around x = 0.30 with Tc $\approx$ 30 K. Here we show that a moderate uniaxial pressure along the c-axis in BaFe2(As0.70P0.30)2 spontaneously induces a 3D collinear AF order with TN = Ts > 30 K, while only slightly suppresses Tc. Although a ~ 400 MPa pressure compresses the c-axis lattice while expanding the in-plane lattice and increasing the nearest-neighbor Fe-Fe distance, it barely changes the average iron-pnictogen height in BaFe2(As0.70P0.30)2. Therefore, the pressure- induced AF order must arise from a strong in-plane magnetoelastic coupling, suggesting that the 2D nematic phase is a competing state with superconductivity.

Content of Local Cohomology, Parameter Ideals, and Robust Algebras

This paper continues the investigation of quasilength, of content of local cohomology with respect to generators of the support ideal, and of robust algebras begun in joint work of Hochster and Huneke. We settle several questions raised by Hochster and Huneke. In particular, we give a family of examples of top local cohomology modules both in equal characteristic 0 and in positive prime characteristic that are nonzero but have content 0. We use the notion of a robust forcing algebra (the condition turns out to be strictly stronger than the notion of a solid forcing algebra in, for example, equal characteristic 0) to define a new closure operation on ideals. We prove that this new notion of closure coincides with tight closure for ideals in complete local domains of positive characteristic, which requires proving that forcing algebras for instances of tight closure are robust, and study several related problems. This gives, in effect, a new characterization of tight closure in complete local domains of positive characteristic. As a byproduct, we also answer a question of Lyubeznik in the negative.

Effect of nematic order on the low-energy spin fluctuations in detwinned BaFe$_{1.935}$Ni$_{0.065}$As$_2$

The origin of nematic order remains one of the major debates in iron-based superconductors. In theories based on spin nematicity, one major prediction is that the spin-spin correlation length at (0,$π$) should decrease with decreasing temperature below the structural transition temperature $T_s$. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering studies on the low-energy spin fluctuations in BaFe$_{1.935}$Ni$_{0.065}$As$_2$ under uniaxial pressure. Both intensity and spin-spin correlation start to show anisotropic behavior at high temperature, while the reduction of the spin-spin correlation length at (0,$π$) happens just below $T_s$, suggesting strong effect of nematic order on low-energy spin fluctuations. Our results favor the idea that treats the spin degree of freedom as the driving force of the electronic nematic order.

Eulerian graded $D$-modules

Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field $K$ of arbitrary characteristic and $D$ be the ring of differential operators over $R$. Inspired by Euler formula for homogeneous polynomials, we introduce a class of graded $D$-modules, called Eulerian graded $D$-modules. It is proved that a vast class of $D$-modules, including all composite of local cohomology modules, $H_{J_0}^{i_0}(H_{J_1}^{i_1}...(H_{J_n}^{i_n}(R)))$ where $J_1,...,J_n$ are homogeneous ideals of $R$, are Eulerian graded. As an application of our theory, we prove that in all characteristic, these composite of local cohomology modules must be isomorphic to a direct sum of $^{*}E(n)$, the graded injective hull of $R/m$ shifted by $n$. This answers a question raised in arXiv:1102.5336. An application of our theory of Eulerian graded $D$-modules to the graded injective hull of $R/P$, where $P$ is a homogeneous prime ideal of $R$, is discussed as well.

Impact of Uniaxial Pressure on Structural and Magnetic Phase Transitions in Electron-Doped Iron Pnictides

We use neutron resonance spin echo and Larmor diffraction to study the effect of uniaxial pressure on the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural ($T_s$) and antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transitions in iron pnictides BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ ($x=0,0.03,0.12$), SrFe$_{1.97}$Ni$_{0.03}$As$_2$, and BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_2$. In antiferromagnetically ordered BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ and SrFe$_{1.97}$Ni$_{0.03}$As$_2$ with $T_N$ and $T_s$ ($T_N\leq T_s$), a uniaxial pressure necessary to detwin the sample also increases $T_N$, smears out the structural transition, and induces an orthorhombic lattice distortion at all temperatures. By comparing temperature and doping dependence of the pressure induced lattice parameter changes with the elastoresistance and nematic susceptibility obtained from transport and ultrasonic measurements, we conclude that the in-plane resistivity anisotropy found in the paramagnetic state of electron underdoped iron pnictides depends sensitively on the nature of the magnetic phase transition and a strong coupling between the uniaxial pressure induced lattice distortion and electronic nematic susceptibility.

Nematic Quantum Critical Fluctuations in BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$

We have systematically studied the nematic fluctuations in the electron-doped iron-based superconductor BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ by measuring the in-plane resistance change under uniaxial pressure. While the nematic quantum critical point can be identified through the measurements along the (110) direction as studied previously, quantum and thermal critical fluctuations cannot be distinguished due to similar Curie-Weiss-like behaviors. Here we find that a sizable pressure-dependent resistivity along the (100) direction is present in all doping levels, which is against the simple picture of an Ising-type nematic model. The signal along the (100) direction becomes maximum at optimal doping, suggesting that it is associated with nematic quantum critical fluctuations. Our results indicate that thermal fluctuations from striped antiferromagnetic order dominate the underdoped regime along the (110) direction. We argue that either there is a strong coupling between the quantum critical fluctuations and the fermions, or more exotically, a higher symmetry may be present around optimal doping.

Spin excitations in optimally P-doped BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2superconductor

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study temperature and energy dependence of spin excitations in optimally P-doped BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 superconductor (Tc = 30 K) throughout the Brillouin zone. In the undoped state, spin waves and paramagnetic spin excitations of BaFe2As2 stem from antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering wave vector QAF= (1/-1,0) and peaks near zone boundary at (1/-1,1/-1) around 180 meV. Replacing 30% As by smaller P to induce superconductivity, low-energy spin excitations of BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2form a resonance in the superconducting state and high-energy spin excitations now peaks around 220 meV near (1/-1,1/-1). These results are consistent with calculations from a combined density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory, and suggest that the decreased average pnictogen height in BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 reduces the strength of electron correlations and increases the effective bandwidth of magnetic excitations.

A note on the growth of regularity with respect to Frobenius

Let $R=k[x_1,\dots,x_n]/I$ be a standard graded $k$-algebra where $k$ is a field of prime characteristic and let $J$ be a homogeneous ideal in $R$. Denote $(x_1,\dots,x_n)$ by $\mathfrak{m}$. We prove that there is a constant $C$ (independent of $e$) such that the regularity of $H^s_{\mathfrak{m}}(R/J^{[p^e]})$ is bounded above by $Cp^e$ for all $e\geq 1$ and all integers $s$ such that $s+1$ is at least the dimension of the locus where $R/J$ doesn't have finite projective dimension.

Electronic nematic correlations in the stress free tetragonal state of BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$

We use transport and neutron scattering to study electronic, structural, and magnetic properties of the electron-doped BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ iron pnictides in the external stress free detwinned state. Using a specially designed in-situ mechanical detwinning device, we demonstrate that the in-plane resistivity anisotropy observed in the uniaxial strained tetragonal state of BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ below a temperature $T^\ast$, previously identified as a signature of the electronic nematic phase, is also present in the stress free tetragonal phase below $T^{\ast\ast}$ ($<T^\ast$). By carrying out neutron scattering measurements on BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and BaFe$_{1.97}$Ni$_{0.03}$As$_2$, we argue that the resistivity anisotropy in the stress free tetragonal state of iron pnictides arises from the magnetoelastic coupling associated with antiferromagnetic order. These results thus indicate that the local lattice distortion and nematic spin correlations are responsible for the resistivity anisotropy in the tetragonal state of iron pnictides.

Neutron spin resonance as a probe of superconducting gap anisotropy in partially detwinned electron underdoped NaFe$_{0.985}$Co$_{0.015}$As

We use inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study the spin excitations in partially detwinned NaFe$_{0.985}$Co$_{0.015}$As which has coexisting static antiferromagnetic (AF) order and superconductivity ($T_c=15$ K, $T_N=30$ K). In previous INS work on a twinned sample, spin excitations form a dispersive sharp resonance near $E_{r1}=3.25$ meV and a broad dispersionless mode at $E_{r1}=6$ meV at the AF ordering wave vector ${\bf Q}_{\rm AF}={\bf Q}_1=(1,0)$ and its twinned domain ${\bf Q}_2=(0,1)$. For partially detwinned NaFe$_{0.985}$Co$_{0.015}$As with the static AF order mostly occurring at ${\bf Q}_{\rm AF}=(1,0)$, we still find a double resonance at both wave vectors with similar intensity. Since ${\bf Q}_1=(1,0)$ characterizes the explicit breaking of the spin rotational symmetry associated with the AF order, these results indicate that the double resonance cannot be due to the static and fluctuating AF orders, but originate from the superconducting gap anisotropy.

Structural and magnetic phase transitions near optimal superconductivity in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

We use nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), high-resolution x-ray and neutron scattering to study structural and magnetic phase transitions in phosphorus-doped BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. Previous transport, NMR, specific heat, and magnetic penetration depth measurements have provided compelling evidence for the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP) near optimal superconductivity at $x=0.3$. However, we show that the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural ($T_s$) and paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic (AF, $T_N$) transitions in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ are always coupled and approach to $T_N\approx T_s \ge T_c$ ($\approx 29$ K) for $x=0.29$ before vanishing abruptly for $x\ge 0.3$. These results suggest that AF order in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ disappears in a weakly first order fashion near optimal superconductivity, much like the electron-doped iron pnictides with an avoided QCP.

Thickness-shear Vibration Frequencies of an Infinite Plate with a Generalized Material Property Grading along the Thickness

For quartz crystal resonators of thickness-shear type, the vibration frequency and mode shapes, which are key features of resonators in circuit applications, reflect the basic material and structural properties of the quartz plate and its variation with time under various factors such as erosive gases and liquids that can cause surface and internal damages and degradation of crystal blanks. The accumulated effects eventually will change the surface conditions in terms of elastic constants and stiffness and more importantly, the gradient of such properties along the thickness. This is a typical functionally graded materials (FGM) structure and has been studied extensively for structural applications under multiple loadings such as thermal and electromagnetic fields in recent years. For acoustic wave resonators, such studies are equally important and the wave propagation in FGM structures can be used in the evaluation and assessment of performance, reliability, and life of sensors based on acoustic waves such as the quartz crystal microbalances (QCM). Now we studied the thickness-shear vibrations of FGM plates with properties of AT-cut quartz crystal varying along the thickness in a general pattern represented by a trigonometric function with both sine and cosine functions of the thickness coordinate. The solutions are obtained by using Fourier expansion of the plate deformation. We also obtained the frequency changes of the fundamental and overtone modes which are strongly coupled for the evaluation of resonator structures with property variation or design to take advantages of FGM in novel applications.

F-pure thresholds of homogeneous polynomials

In this article, we investigate F-pure thresholds of polynomials that are homogeneous under some N-grading, and have an isolated singularity at the origin. We characterize these invariants in terms of the base p expansion of the corresponding log canonical threshold. As an application, we are able to make precise some bounds on the difference between F-pure and log canonical thresholds established by Mustaţă and the fourth author. We also examine the set of primes for which the F-pure and log canonical threshold of a polynomial must differ. Moreover, we obtain results in special cases on the ACC conjecture for F-pure thresholds, and on the upper semi-continuity property for the F-pure threshold function.

Thickness-shear Frequencies of an Infinite Quartz Plate with Material Property Variation Along the Thickness

Properties of the quartz crystal blank of a resonator is assumed homogeneous, uniform, and perfect in design, manufacturing, and applications. As end products, quartz crystal resonators are frequently exposed to gases and liquids which can cause surface damage and internal degradation of blanks under increasingly hostile conditions. The combination of service conditions and manufacturing process including chemical etching and polishing can inevitably modify the surface of quartz crystal blanks with changes of material properties, raising the question of what will happen to vibrations of quartz crystal resonators of thickness-shear type if such modifications to blanks are to be evaluated for sensitive applications. Such questions have been encountered in other materials and structures with property variations either on purpose or as the effect of environmental or natural processes commonly referred to as functionally graded materials, or FGMs. Analyses have been done in applications as part of studies on FGMs in structural as well as in acoustic wave device applications. A procedure based on series solutions has been developed in the evaluation of frequency changes and features in an infinite quartz crystal plate of AT-cut with the symmetric material variation pattern given in a cosine function with the findings that the vibration modes are now closely coupled. These results can be used in the evaluation of surface damage and corrosion of quartz crystal blanks of resonators in sensor applications or development of new structures of resonators.

Annihilators of Artinian modules compatible with a Frobenius map

In this paper we consider Artinian modules over power series rings endowed with a Frobenius map. We describe a method for finding the set of all prime annihilators of submodules which are preserved by the given Frobenius map and on which the Frobenius map is not nilpotent. This extends the algorithm by Karl Schwede and the first author, which solved this problem for submodules of the injective hull of the residue field. The Matlis dual of this problem asks for the radical annihilators of quotients of free modules by submodules preserved by a given Frobenius near-splitting, and the same method solves this dual problem in the $F$-finite case.

Local cohomology modules of a smooth Z-algebra have finitely many associated primes

Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring that is a smooth $\mathbb Z$-algebra. For each ideal $I$ of $R$ and integer $k$, we prove that the local cohomology module $H^k_I(R)$ has finitely many associated prime ideals. This settles a crucial outstanding case of a conjecture of Lyubeznik asserting this finiteness for local cohomology modules of all regular rings.

Cartier modules on toric varieties

Assume that $X$ is an affine toric variety of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $Δ$ be an effective toric $Q$-divisor such that $K_X+Δ$ is $Q$-Cartier with index not divisible by $p$ and let $ϕ_Δ:F^e_* O_X \to O_X$ be the toric map corresponding to $Δ$. We identify all ideals $I$ of $O_X$ with $ϕ_Δ(F^e_* I)=I$ combinatorially and also in terms of a log resolution (giving us a version of these ideals which can be defined in characteristic zero). Moreover, given a toric ideal $\ba$, we identify all ideals $I$ fixed by the Cartier algebra generated by $ϕ_Δ$ and $\ba$; this answers a question by Manuel Blickle in the toric setting.

Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the discreteness of $F$-jumping coefficients in graded rings

In this paper we show that the sets of $F$-jumping coefficients of ideals form discrete sets in certain graded $F$-finite rings. We do so by giving a criterion based on linear bounds for the growth of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of certain ideals. We further show that these linear bounds exists for one-dimensional rings and for ideals of (most) two-dimensional domains. We conclude by applying our technique to prove that all sets of $F$-jumping coefficients of all ideals in the determinantal ring given as the quotient by $2\times 2$ minors in a $2\times 3$ matrix of indeterminates form discrete sets.

Test ideals via a single alteration and discreteness and rationality of $F$-jumping numbers

Suppose $(X, Δ)$ is a log-$\bQ$-Gorenstein pair. Recent work of M. Blickle and the first two authors gives a uniform description of the multiplier ideal $\mJ(X;Δ)$ (in characteristic zero) and the test ideal $τ(X;Δ)$ (in characteristic $p > 0$) via regular alterations. While in general the alteration required depends heavily on $Δ$, for a fixed Cartier divisor $D$ on $X$ it is straightforward to find a single alteration (e.g. a log resolution) computing $\mJ(X; Δ+ λD)$ for all $λ\geq 0$. In this paper, we show the analogous statement in positive characteristic: there exists a single regular alteration computing $τ(X; Δ+ λD)$ for all $λ\geq 0$. Along the way, we also prove the discreteness and rationality for the $F$-jumping numbers of $τ(X; Δ+ λD)$ for $λ\geq 0$ where the index of $K_X + Δ$ is arbitrary (and may be divisible by the characteristic).

An upper bound on the number of F-jumping coefficients of a principal ideal

We prove a result relating the Jacobian ideal and the generalized test ideal associated to a principal ideal in $R=k[x_1,...,x_n]$ with $[k:k^p]<\infty$ or in $R=k[[x_1,...,x_n]]$ with an arbitrary field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. As a consequence of this result, we establish an upper bound on the number of $F$-jumping coefficients of a principal ideal with an isolated singularity.

Discreteness and rationality of $F$-jumping numbers on singular varieties

We prove that the $F$-jumping numbers of the test ideal $τ(X; Δ, \ba^t)$ are discrete and rational under the assumptions that $X$ is a normal and $F$-finite variety over a field of positive characteristic $p$, $K_X+Δ$ is $\bQ$-Cartier of index not divisible $p$, and either $X$ is essentially of finite type over a field or the sheaf of ideals $\ba$ is locally principal. This is the largest generality for which discreteness and rationality are known for the jumping numbers of multiplier ideals in characteristic zero.
