Nonlinear Hodge flows in symplectic geometry

Given a symplectic class $[ω]$ on a four torus $T^4$ (or a $K3$ surface), a folklore problem in symplectic geometry is whether symplectic forms in $[ω]$ are isotropic to each other. We introduce a family of nonlinear Hodge heat flows on compact symplectic four manifolds to approach this problem, which is an adaption of nonlinear Hodge theory in symplectic geometry. As a particular example, we study a conformal Hodge heat flow in detail. We prove a stability result of the flow near an almost Kahler structure $(M, ω, g)$. We also prove that, if $|\nabla \log u|$ stays bounded along the flow, then the flow exists for all time for any initial symplectic form $ρ\in [ω]$ and it converges to $ω$ smoothly along the flow with uniform control, where $u$ is the volume potential of $ρ$.

Biharmonic almost complex structure

We introduce the notion of \emph{biharmonic almost complex structure} on a compact almost Hermitian manifold and we study its regularity and existence in dimension four. First we show that there always exist smooth energy-minimizing biharmonic almost complex structures for any almost Hermitian structure on a compact almost complex four manifold, and all energy-minimizers form a compact set. Then we study the existence problem when the homotopy class of an almost complex structure is specified. We obtain existence of energy-minimizing biharmonic almost complex structures which depends on the topology of $M^4$. When $M$ is simply-connected and non-spin, then for each homotopy class which is uniquely determined by its first Chern class, there exists an energy-minimizing biharmonic almost complex structure. When $M$ is simply-connected and spin, for each first Chern class, there are exactly two homotopy classes corresponding to the first Chern class. Given a homotopy class $[τ]$ of an almost complex structure, there exists a canonical operation on the homotopy classes $p$ satisfying $p^2=\text{id}$ such that $p([τ])$ and $[τ]$ have the same first Chern class. We prove that there exists an energy-minimizing biharmonic almost complex structure in (at least) one of the two homotopy classes, $[τ]$ and $p([τ])$. In general if $M$ is not necessarily simply-connected, we prove that there exists an energy-minimizing biharmonic almost complex structure in (at least) one of the two homotopy classes $[τ]$ and $p([τ])$. The study of biharmonic almost complex structures should have many applications, in particular for the smooth topology of the underlying almost complex four manifold. We briefly discuss an approach by considering the moduli space of biharmonic almost complex structures and propose a conjecture.

$\cF$-functional and geodesic stability

We consider canonical metrics on Fano manifolds. First we introduce a norm-type functional on Fano manifolds, which has Kahler-Einstein or Kahler-Ricci soliton as its critical point and the Kahler-Ricci flow can be viewed as its (reduced) gradient flow. We then obtain a natural lower bound of this functional. As an application, we prove that Kahler-Ricci soliton, if exists, maximizes Perelman's $μ$-functional without extra assumptions. Second we consider a conjecture proposed by S.K. Donaldson in terms of $\cK$-energy. Our simple observation is that $\cF$-functional, as $\cK$-energy, also integrates Futaki invariant. We then restate geodesic stability conjecture on Fano manifolds in terms of $\cF$-functional. Similar pictures can also be extended to Kahler-Ricci soliton and modified $\cF$-functional.

Frankel Conjecture and Sasaki geometry

We classify simply connected compact Sasaki manifolds of dimension $2n+1$ with positive transverse bisectional curvature. In particular, the Kähler cone corresponding to such manifolds must be bi-holomorphic to $\C^{n+1}\backslash \{0\}$. As an application we recover the Mori-Siu-Yau theorem on the Frankel conjecture and extend it to certain orbifold version. The main idea is to deform such Sasaki manifolds to the standard round sphere in two steps, both fixing the complex structure on the Kähler cone. First, we deform the metric along the Sasaki-Ricci flow and obtain a limit Sasaki-Ricci soliton with positive transverse bisectional curvature. Then by varying the Reeb vector field along the negative gradient of the volume functional, we deform the Sasaki-Ricci soliton to a Sasaki-Einstein metric with positive transverse bisectional curvature, i.e. a round sphere. The second deformation is only possible when one treats simultaneously regular and irregular Sasaki manifolds, even if the manifold one starts with is regular(quasi-regular), i.e. Kähler manifolds(orbifolds).

On the space of Kahler potentials

We consider the geodesic equation for the generalized Kahler potential with only mixed second derivatives bounded. We show that given such two generalized Kahler potentials, there is a unique geodesic segment such that for each point on the geodesic, the generalized Kahler potential has uniformly bounded mixed second derivatives (in manifold directions). This generalizes a fundamental theorem of Chen \cite{Chen00} on the space of Kahler potentials.

The generalized Frankel conjecture in Sasaki geometry

We prove some structure results for \emph{transverse reducible} Sasaki manifolds. In particular, we show Sasaki manifolds with positive Ricci curvature is transversely irreducible, and so there is no join (product) construction for irregular Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, as opposed to the quasi-regular case done by Wang-Ziller and Boyer-Galicki. As an application, we classify compact Sasaki manifolds with non-negative transverse bisectional curvature, which can be viewed as the generalized Frankel conjecture (N. Mok's theorem) in Sasaki geometry.

On the transverse scalar curvature of a compact Sasaki manifold

We show that the standard picture regarding the notion of stability of constant scalar curvature metrics in Kähler geometry described by S.K. Donaldson, which involves the geometry of infinite-dimensional groups and spaces, can be applied to the constant scalar curvature metrics in Sasaki geometry with only few modification. We prove that the space of Sasaki metrics is an infinite dimensional symmetric space and that the transverse scalar curvature of a Sasaki metric is a moment map of the strict contactomophism group.

The complex Monge-Ampere equation on compact Kaehler manifolds

We consider the complex Monge-Ampère equation on a compact Kähler manifold $(M, g)$ when the right hand side $F$ has rather weak regularity. In particular we prove that estimate of $\tϕ$ and the gradient estimate hold when $F$ is in $W^{1, p_0}$ for any $p_0>2n$. As an application, we show that there exists a classical solution in $W^{3, p_0}$ for the complex Monge-Ampère equation when $F$ is in $W^{1, p_0}$.

The Sasaki-Ricci flow and compact Sasakian manifolds of positive transverse holomorphic bisectional curvature

We show that Perelman's W-functional can be generalized to Sasaki-Ricci flow. When the basic first Chern class is positive, we prove a uniform bound on the scalar curvature, the diameter and a uniform $C^1$ bound for the transverse Ricci potential along the Sasaki-Ricci flow, which generalizes Perelman's results Kahler-Ricci flow to the Sasakian setting. We also show that the positivity of transverse of holomorphic bisectional curvature is preserved along the flow, using the methods and the results proved by Bando and Mok in Kahler setting. In particular, we show that the Sasaki-Ricci flow would converge to a Sasaki-Ricci soliton if the initial metric has nonnegative transverse holomorphic bisectional curvature.

On regularity of complex Monge-Ampere equation

We shall consider the regularity problem of solutions for complex Monge-Ampere equations. First we prove interior $C^2$ estimates of solutions in a bounded domain for complex Monge-Ampere equation with assumption of certain $L^p$ bound for Laplacian u, and of Lipschitz condition on right hand side. Then we shall construct a family of Pogorelov-type examples for complex Monge-Ampere equation. These examples give generalized entire solutions (as well as viscosity solutions) of complex Monge-Ampere equation $\det(u_{i\bar j})=1.

The space of volume forms

S. Donaldson introduced a metric on the space of volume forms, with fixed total volume on any compact Riemmanian manifold. With this metric, the space of volume forms formally has non-positive curvature. The geodesic equation is a fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equation. We solve the geodesic equation and its perturbed equation and prove that the space of volume forms is an infinite dimensional non-positively curved metric space in the sense of Alexandrov.

On the Calabi flow

We first give a precise statement on the short time existence of the Calabi flow and prove a stability result: any metric near a constant scalar curvature metric will flow to this cscK metric exponentially fast. Secondly, we prove that a compactness theorem in space of the kahler metrics given unifrom Ricci bound and potential bound. As an application, we prove the Calabi flow can be extended once Ricci curvature stays uniformly bounded. Lastly, we prove a removing-sigularity result about a weak constant scalar curveture metric in a punctured ball. One of the main difficulties is that the metric is not assumed to be smooth outside of the singular point.
