Ultraviolet-Infrared Mixing in Marginal Fermi Liquids

When Fermi surfaces (FSs) are subject to long-range interactions that are marginal in the renormalization-group sense, Landau Fermi liquids are destroyed, but only barely. With the interaction further screened by particle-hole excitations through one-loop quantum corrections, it has been believed that these marginal Fermi liquids (MFLs) are described by weakly coupled field theories at low energies. In this Letter, we point out a possibility in which higher-loop processes qualitatively change the picture through UV-IR mixing, in which the size of the FS enters as a relevant scale. The UV-IR mixing effect enhances the coupling at low energies, such that the basin of attraction for the weakly coupled fixed point of a $(2+1)$-dimensional MFL shrinks to a measure-zero set in the low-energy limit. This UV-IR mixing is caused by gapless virtual Cooper pairs that spread over the entire FS through marginal long-range interactions. Our finding signals a possible breakdown of the patch description for the MFL and questions the validity of using the MFL as the base theory in a controlled scheme for non-Fermi liquids that arise from relevant long-range interactions.

Towards Practical Lipschitz Bandits

Stochastic Lipschitz bandit algorithms balance exploration and exploitation, and have been used for a variety of important task domains. In this paper, we present a framework for Lipschitz bandit methods that adaptively learns partitions of context- and arm-space. Due to this flexibility, the algorithm is able to efficiently optimize rewards and minimize regret, by focusing on the portions of the space that are most relevant. In our analysis, we link tree-based methods to Gaussian processes. In light of our analysis, we design a novel hierarchical Bayesian model for Lipschitz bandit problems. Our experiments show that our algorithms can achieve state-of-the-art performance in challenging real-world tasks such as neural network hyperparameter tuning.

Quasinormal modes of Gauss-Bonnet black holes at large D

Einstein's General Relativity theory simplifies dramatically in the limit that the spacetime dimension D is very large. This could still be true in the gravity theory with higher derivative terms. In this paper, as the first step to study the gravity with a Gauss-Bonnet(GB) term, we compute the quasi-normal modes of the spherically symmetric GB black hole in the large D limit. When the GB parameter is small, we find that the non-decoupling modes are the same as the Schwarzschild case and the decoupled modes are slightly modified by the GB term. However, when the GB parameter is large, we find some novel features. We notice that there are another set of non-decoupling modes due to the appearance of a new plateau in the effective radial potential. Moreover, the effective radial potential for the decoupled vector-type and scalar-type modes becomes more complicated. Nevertheless we manage to compute the frequencies of the these decoupled modes analytically. When the GB parameter is neither very large nor very small, though analytic computation is not possible, the problem is much simplified in the large D expansion and could be numerically treated. We study numerically the vector-type quasinormal modes in this case.
