Charged lepton flavor violation in light of Muon $g-2$

The recent confirmation of the muon $g-2$ anomaly by the Fermilab g-2 experiment may harbinger a new era in $μ$ and $τ$ physics. In the context of general two Higgs doublet model, the discrepancy can be explained via one-loop exchange of sub-TeV exotic scalar and pseudoscalars, namely $H$ and $A$, that have flavor changing neutral couplings $ρ_{τμ}$ and $ρ_{μτ}$ at $\sim 20$ times the usual tau Yukawa coupling, $λ_τ$. Taking $ρ_{\ell\ell^\prime}\sim λ_{ \rm min(\ell, \ell^\prime)}$, we show that the above solution to muon $g-2$ then predicts enhanced rates of various charged lepton flavor violating processes, which should be accessible at upcoming experiments. We cover muon related processes such as $μ\to e γ$, $μ\to eee$ and $μN \to e N$, and $τ$ decays $τ\to μγ$ and $τ\to μμμ$. A similar one-loop diagram with $ρ_{eτ}= ρ_{τe} = {\cal O}(λ_e)$ induces $μ\to eγ$, bringing the rate right into the sensitivity of the MEG~II experiment. The $μeγ$ dipole can be probed further by $μ\to 3e$ and $μN \to e N$. With its promised sensitivity range and ability to use different nuclei, the $μN \to eN$ conversion experiments can not only make discovery, but access the extra diagonal quark Yukawa couplings $ρ_{qq}$. For the $τ$ lepton, we find that $τ\to μγ$ would probe $ρ_{ττ}$ down to $λ_τ$ or lower, while $τ\to 3μ$ would probe $ρ_{μμ}$ to ${\cal O}(λ_μ)$.

Searching for Charged Higgs Bosons via $e^+ e^- \to H^+ H^- \to c\bar{b} \bar{c}b $ at Linear Colliders

We study a search for the charged Higgs boson via $e^+e^- \to H^+H^- \to c\bar{b}\bar{c}b$ at the 500 GeV ILC. In a general two Higgs doublet model without $Z_2$ symmetry, extra Yukawa couplings $ρ_{tt}$ and $ρ_{tc}$ can drive baryogenesis, but searches at the HL-LHC may still go empty-handed if the couplings are relatively weak. Taking $m_{H^+ } \simeq m_H \simeq m_A \simeq 200$ GeV, with $ρ_{tt}$, $ρ_{tc}\sim 0.1$ and no $h(125)$-$H$ mixing, $H^+ \to c\bar b$ decay is dominant, and the $c\bar{b}\bar{c}b$ final state is likely overwhelmed by QCD background at the LHC. We show that the electroweak production of $H^+ H^-$ at the ILC is discoverable with integrated luminosity of 1 ab$^{-1}$. Furthermore, we show that $m_{H^+}$ can be extracted by requiring the two pairs of $b$ and light jets be roughly equal in mass, without assuming the mass value. Thus, ILC can probe low mass Higgs bosons in multijet final states to complement HL-LHC in the future

Decadal Mission for the New Physics Higgs/Flavor Era

The LHC has not discovered any New Physics beyond the anticipated $h(125)$ boson, and new ideas abound for out-of-the-box searches, or Effective Field Theories with multi-TeV cutoff. But, have we exhausted dimension-4 operators involving sub-TeV particles that are {\it not} exotic (non-XLP)? We advocate the existence of an extra Higgs doublet that carry extra Weinberg couplings, where {\it emergent} mass-mixing hierarchies {\it and} alignment have hidden their effects very well so far. ${\cal O}(1)$ Higgs quartics can induce first order electroweak phase transition and imply sub-TeV $H, A, H^\pm$ spectrum. The extra Weinberg couplings, led by $ρ_{tt}$ and $ρ_{tc}$ at ${\cal O}(1)$, can drive electroweak baryogenesis, while $|ρ_{ee}/ρ_{tt}| \propto λ_e/λ_t$, the ratio of usual electron and top Weinberg couplings, can tame electron EDM. Finding these extra Higgs bosons via $cg \to tH/A \to tt\bar c$, $tt\bar t$ and $cg \to bH^+ \to bt\bar b$ processes (and those allowed by Higgs boson splittings) at the LHC, and pushing the flavor frontier to break the flavor code, would usher in a new Higgs/flavor era. A new scale at 10--20 TeV, possibly related to the Landau pole of the scalar sector, may emerge.

Cancellation mechanism for the electron electric dipole moment connected with the baryon asymmetry of the Universe

We elucidate a cancellation mechanism for the electric dipole moment of the electron in the general two Higgs doublet model. The impressive improvement by the ACME Collaboration in 2018 suggests the presence of a new electron Yukawa coupling that brings in exquisite cancellations among dangerous diagrams, broadening the solution space for electroweak baryogenesis driven by an extra top Yukawa coupling. The cancellation mechanism calls for the new Yukawa couplings to have hierarchical structures that echo the observed pattern of the Standard Model Yukawa couplings.

Constraining $t \to u$ flavor changing neutral Higgs coupling at the LHC

We study the constraints on $t\to u$ flavor changing neutral Higgs (FCNH) coupling, and how it may be explored further at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the general two Higgs doublet model, such transitions can be induced by a nonzero $ρ_{tu}$ Yukawa coupling. We show that such couplings can be constrained by existing searches at the LHC for $m_H$, $m_A$ and, $m_{H^+}$ in the sub-TeV range, where $H$, $A$ and $H^+$ are the exotic $CP$-even, $CP$-odd and charged scalars. We find that a dedicated $ug\to t H/tA \to t t \bar u$ search can probe the available parameter space of $ρ_{tu}$ down to a few percent level for $200\,\mbox{GeV} \lesssim m_H,\,m_A \lesssim 600$ GeV, with discovery possible at high luminosity. Effects of how other extra top Yukawa couplings, such as $ρ_{tc}$ and $ρ_{tt}$, dilute the sensitivity of the $ρ_{tu}$ probe are discussed.

Muon Flavor Violation in Two Higgs Doublet Model with Extra Yukawa Couplings

The new round of experiments, MEG II, COMET/Mu2e, and Mu3e, would soon start to push the $μ\to eγ$, $μN \to eN$ conversion, and $μ\to 3e$ frontier, while Belle II would probe $τ\to μγ$ and $τ\to 3μ$. In the general two Higgs doublet model with extra Yukawa couplings, we show that all these processes probe the lepton flavor violating (LFV) dipole transition that arises from the two loop mechanism, with scalar-induced contact terms subdominant. This is because existing data suggest the extra Yukawa couplings $ρ_{μe},\, ρ_{ee} \lesssim λ_e$, while $ρ_{τμ},\, ρ_{ττ} \lesssim λ_τ$ and $ρ_{tt} \lesssim λ_t$, with $λ_i$ the usual Yukawa coupling of the Standard Model (SM), where $ρ_{μe}ρ_{tt}$ and $ρ_{τμ}ρ_{tt}$ enter the $μeγ$ and $τμγ$ two loop amplitudes, respectively. With the $B_s \to μμ$ decay rate basically consistent with SM expectation, together with the $B_s$ mixing constraint, we show that $B_s \to ττ$ would also be consistent with SM, while $B_s \to τμ$ and $B \to Kτμ$ decays would be out of reach of projected sensitivities, in strong contrast with some models motivated by the B anomalies.

The $tZH$ and $tZh$ production in 2HDM: Prospects for discovery at the LHC

We study the discovery potential of the $cg \to tA\to tZH$ process at the LHC, where $A$ and $H$ are CP-odd and even exotic scalars, respectively. The context is the general Two Higgs Doublet Model, where $cg \to tA$ is induced by the flavor changing neutral Higgs coupling $ρ_{tc}$. We find that the process $cg \to tA\to tZH$ can be discovered for $m_A \sim 400$ GeV, but would likely require high luminosity running of the LHC. Such a discovery would shed light on the mechanism behind the observed Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe. We also study $cg \to tA\to tZh$, where $h$ is the observed 125 GeV scalar, but find it out of reach at the LHC.

The Coming Decade of $h \to τμ$ and $τ\to μγ$ Interplay in $τ$ Flavor Violation Search

We explore the interplay between $h(125) \to τμ$ search at the LHC and $τ\to μγ$ at the up and coming Belle~II experiment, in context of the general two Higgs doublet model with extra Yukawa couplings such as $ρ_{τμ}$. The search for $h \to τμ$ constrains $ρ_{τμ} \cosγ$, where $\cosγ$ is the $h$--$H$ mixing angle of $h$ with the exotic $CP$-even scalar $H$. For $τ\to μγ$, we define the "BSM-benchmark" by setting the extra top Yukawa coupling $ρ_{tt} = 1\ (\cong λ_t)$ in two-loop diagrams, and $\cosγ= 0$ to decouple $h$. We show that this leading effect due to $H$ and $CP$-odd scalar $A$ can be readily probed by Belle~II, even for the conservative value of $ρ_{τμ} = 0.7λ_τ$. We define the subleading "$h$-benchmark" by setting $ρ_{tt} = 0$ in two-loop diagrams, and take the conservative maximal value of $\cosγ= 0.2$. We show that it falls beyond Belle~II reach, but can interfere with the BSM-benchmark effect, which in principle probes the phase of $ρ_{tt}$. We further show that the one-loop $H$, $A$ effect, proportional to $ρ_{τμ}ρ_{ττ}$ in amplitude, is beyond the sensitivity of Belle~II to probe, even for $ρ_{ττ}$ as large as $3λ_τ$. With the working assumption that $ρ_{32}^f, ρ_{33}^f = {\cal O}(λ_3^f)$ for all charged fermions $f$, we find good discovery potential for both $τ$ lepton flavor violation searches in the coming decade.

Z'-induced FCNC decays of top, beauty and strange quarks

Anomalous b --> s transitions from LHCb data may suggest a new massive gauge boson Z' that couples to the left-handed b --> s current, which in turn implies a coupling to the t --> c current. In this paper, we study flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) decays of the top quark induced by a Z' boson, namely t --> c Z', based on a model of the gauged L_mu - L_tau symmetry (the difference between the muon and tauon numbers) with vector-like quarks, which was introduced to explain the anomalous LHCb data. We illustrate that searching for t --> c Z' via Z' --> mu^+ mu^- with LHC Run 1 data can already probe a parameter region which is unexplored by B physics for the Z' mass around O(10) GeV or more. We further extend the model to very light Z' with mass below 400 MeV, which is motivated by the muon g-2 anomaly. Taking rare B and K meson decay data into account, we give upper limits on the t --> c Z' branching ratio for the light Z' case, and discuss about its observability at the LHC. We also scrutinize the possibility that the decay K_L --> pi^0 Z' with Z' --> nu nubar may lead to apparent violation of the usual Grossman-Nir bound of B(K_L --> pi^0 nu nubar) < 1.4 x 10^-9.

Correlating $B_q^0 \to μ^+μ^-$ and $K_L \to π^0ν\barν$ Decays with Four Generations

The long-awaited $B_s\to μ^+μ^-$ mode has finally been observed at rate consistent with Standard Model, albeit lower by 1.2$σ$. There is some hint for New Physics in the rarer $B_d^0 \to μ^+μ^-$ decay, especially if the currently 2.2$σ$-enhanced central value persists with more data. The measurement of $CP$ violating phase $ϕ_s$, via both $B_s\to J/ψK\bar K$ and $J/ψππ$ modes, has reached Standard Model sensitivity. These measurements stand major improvement when LHC enters Run 2. Concurrently, the $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ and $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ modes are being pursued in a similar time frame. We illustrate the possible correlations between New Physics effects in these four modes, using the fourth generation as example. While correlations may or may not exist in other New Physics models, the four generation model can accommodate enhancements in both $B_d^0 \to μ^+μ^-$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$.

Flavor Changing Heavy Higgs Interactions at the LHC

A general two Higgs doublet model (2HDM) is adopted to study the signature of flavor changing neutral Higgs (FCNH) decay $ϕ^0 \to t\bar{c}+\bar{t}c$, where $ϕ^0$ could be a CP-even scalar ($H^0$) or a CP-odd pseudoscalar ($A^0$). Measurement of the light 125 GeV neutral Higgs boson ($h^0$) couplings at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) favor the decoupling limit or the alignment limit of a 2HDM, in which gauge boson and diagonal fermion couplings of $h^0$ approach Standard Model values. In such limit, FCNH couplings of $h^0$ are naturally suppressed by a small mixing parameter $\cos(β-α)$, while the off-diagonal couplings of heavier neutral scalars $ϕ^0$ are sustained by $\sin(β-α) \sim 1$. We study physics background from dominant processes with realistic acceptance cuts and tagging efficiencies. Promising results are found for the LHC running at 13 or 14 TeV collision energies.

Loophole in K --> pi nu nubar Search and New Weak Leptonic Forces

Weakly interacting K --> pi X^0 emission with m_{X^0} \simeq m_{pi^0} is out of sight of the current K^+ --> pi^+ nu nubar study, but it can be sensed by the K_L --> pi^0 nu nubar search. This evades the usual Grossman-Nir bound of B(K_L --> pi^0 nu nubar) < 1.4 x 10^-9, thus the KOTO experiment is already starting to probe New Physics. An intriguing possibility is the Z' gauge boson of a weak leptonic force that couples to L_mu - L_tau (the difference between the muon and tauon numbers), which may explain the long-standing "muon g-2" anomaly, but is constrained by nu_mu N --> nu_mu N mu^+ mu^- scattering to m_{Z'} \lesssim 400 MeV. An explicit model for K --> pi Z' is given, which illustrates the link between rare kaon and B --> K mu^+ mu^-, K^{(*)} nu nubar decays. Complementary to these searches and future lepton experiments, the LHC might discover the scalar boson phi responsible for light m_{Z'} generation via phi --> Z' Z' --> 2(mu^+ mu^-).

Rates and Asymmetries of B --> pi l+ l- Decays

The LHCb experiment observed B+ --> pi+ mu+ mu- decay with 1.0 fb^-1 data, which is the first measurement of a flavor changing neutral current b --> d l+ l- decay (l = e, mu). Based on QCD factorization, we give Standard Model predictions for the branching ratios, direct CP asymmetries, and isospin asymmetry for B --> pi l+ l- decays, in the kinematic region where the dilepton invariant mass is small. We find that the contribution from weak annihilation enhances the direct CP asymmetry for low l+ l- pair mass. Anticipating improved measurements, we assess the utility of B+ --> pi+ l+ l- observables, when combined with B0 --> pi- l+ nu and B+ --> K+ l+ l-, for determining CKM parameters in the future.

Bootstrap Dynamical Symmetry Breaking with New Heavy Chiral Quarks

A Higgs-like new boson with mass around 126 GeV is now established, but its true nature probably cannot be settled with 2011--2012 LHC data. We assume it is a dilaton with couplings weaker than the Higgs boson (except to $γγ$ and $gg$), and explore dynamical symmetry breaking (DSB) by strong Yukawa coupling of a yet unseen heavy chiral quark doublet $Q$. Assuming the actual Higgs boson to be heavy, the Goldstone boson $G$ of electroweak symmetry breaking still couples to $Q$ with Yukawa coupling $λ_Q$. A ``bootstrap" gap equation without a Higgs particle is constructed. Electroweak symmetry breaking via strong $λ_Q$ generates both heavy mass for $Q$, while self-consistently justifying $G$ as a massless Goldstone particle in the loop. The spontaneous breaking of scale invariance in principle \emph{allows} for a dilaton. We numerically solve such a gap equation and find the mass of the heavy quark to be a couple of TeV. We offer a short critique on the results of the scale-invariant model of Hung and Xiong, where a similar gap equation is built with a massless scalar doublet. Through this we show that a light SM Higgs at 126 GeV cannot be viable within our approach to DSB, while a dilaton with weaker couplings is consistent with our main result.

Implication of possible observation of enhanced Bd0 --> mu+ mu- decay

The very rare Bd0 --> mu+ mu- decay may be the last chance for New Physics in flavor sector at the LHC, before the 13 TeV run in 2015. Partially motivated by the known tension in sin(2beta/phi_1), enhancement beyond (3-4) x 10^-10 would likely imply the effect of a fourth generation of quarks. If observed at this level, the 126 GeV boson may not be the actual Higgs boson, while the b --> d quadrangle (modulo m_t') would jump out. The 2011-2012 data is likely not sensitive to values below 3 x 10^-10, and the mode should continue to be pursued with the 13 TeV run.

When the Higgs meets the Top: Search for t --> ch^0 at the LHC

The newly discovered "Higgs" boson h^0, being lighter than the top quark t, opens up new probes for flavor and mass generation. In the general two Higgs doublet model, new ct, cc and tt Yukawa couplings could modify h^0 properties. If t --> ch^0 occurs at the percent level, the observed ZZ^* and γγsignal events may have accompanying cbW activity coming from t\bar{t} feeddown. We suggest that t --> ch^0 can be searched for via h^0 --> ZZ^*, γγ, WW^* and b\bar{b}, perhaps even τ^+τ^- modes in t\bar{t} events. Existing data might be able to reveal some clues for t --> ch^0 signature, or push the branching ratio B(t --> ch^0) down to below the percent level.

Doubly resonant WW plus jet signatures at the LHC

We present search prospects and phenomenology of doubly resonant signals that come from the decay of a neutral weak-singlet color-octet vector state ω_8 into a lighter weak-triplet color-octet scalar π_8, which can arise in several theories beyond the Standard Model. Taking m_{ω_8}-m_{π_8}>m_W, we demonstrate an analysis of the signals pp \to ω_8 \to π^\pm_8 W^\mp (π^0_8 Z) \to g W^\pm W^\mp (g Z Z). The present 8 TeV LHC run is found to have the potential to exclude or discover the signal for a range of masses and parameters. The preferred search channel has a boosted W-tagged jet forming a resonance with a second hard jet, in association with a lepton and missing energy.

Heavy QQ(bar) "Fireball" Annihilation to Multiple Vector Bosons

Drawing analogy of replacing the nucleon by heavy chiral quark $Q$, the pion by Goldstone boson $G$, and $πNN$ coupling by $GQQ$ coupling, we construct a statistical model for $Q\bar Q \to nG$ annihilation, i.e. into $n$ longitudinal weak bosons. This analogy is becoming prescient since the LHC direct bound $m_Q > 611$ GeV implies strong Yukawa coupling. Taking $m_Q \in (1, 2)$ TeV, the mean number $<n_G>$ ranges from 6 to over 10, with negligible two or three boson production. With individual $t'$ or $b'$ decays suppressed either by phase space or quark mixing, and given the strong Yukawa coupling, $Q\bar Q\to nV_L$ is the likely outcome for very heavy $Q\bar Q$ production at the LHC.

Hints for a Low Bs --> mu+ mu- Rate and the Fourth Generation

With full 2011 LHC data analyzed, there is no indication for deviation from Standard Model (SM) in CP violating phase for Bs --> J/psi phi, nor in the forward-backward asymmetry for B0 --> K*0 mu+ mu-. SM sensitivity, however, has been reached for Bs --> mu+ mu- rate, and there may be some hint for a suppression. We illustrate that, if a suppressed B(Bs --> mu+ mu-) bears out with 2012 data, it would imply a lower bound on the fourth generation quark mixing product |V_{t's}^*V_{t'b}|.

Some Unfinished Thoughts on Strong Yukawa Couplings

Yukawa couplings of electroweak Goldstone bosons can be inferred from experiment, but the existence of an elementary Higgs boson is not yet an established fact. If a sequential chiral quark generation does exist, it would bring us now into the strong Yukawa coupling regime. Guided by a Bethe--Salpeter equation approach, we postulate that the leading collapse state, the (heavy) isotriplet and color-singlet $π_1$ meson, becomes the Goldstone boson $G$ itself. Viewing it as a deeply bound state, a gap equation is constructed. This "`bootstrap" picture for electroweak symmetry breaking relies on strong Yukawa coupling, without providing any theory of the latter.

Top Decays with Flavor Changing Neutral Higgs Interactions at the LHC

We investigate the prospects for discovering a top quark decaying into one light Higgs boson along with a charm quark in top quark pair production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A general two Higgs doublet model is adopted to study the signature of flavor changing neutral Higgs decay $t \to cϕ^0$, %or $\bar{t} \to \bar{c}ϕ^0$ where $ϕ^0$ could be CP-even ($H^0$) or CP-odd ($A^0$). The dominant physics background is evaluated with realistic acceptance cuts as well as tagging and mistagging efficiencies. For a reasonably large top-charm-Higgs coupling ($λ_{tc}/λ_{t} \agt 0.09$), the abundance of signal events and the %that our acceptance cuts reduction in physics background allow us to establish a $5σ$ signal for $M_ϕ\sim 125$ GeV at the LHC with a center of mass energy ($\sqrt{s}$) of 8 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 20 fb$^{-1}$. The discovery potential will be greatly enhanced with the full energy of $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV.

Early LHC Phenomenology of Yukawa-bound Heavy Q\bar{Q} Mesons

Current limits from the LHC on fourth generation quarks are already at the unitarity bound of 500 GeV or so. If they exist, the strong Yukawa couplings are turning nonperturbative, and may form bound states. We study the domain of m_{b'} and m_{t'} in the range of 500 to 700 GeV, where we expect binding energies are mainly of Yukawa origin, with QCD subdominant. To be consistent with electroweak precision tests, the t' and b' quarks have to be nearly degenerate, exhibiting a new "isospin". Comparing relativistic expansion with a relativistic bound state approach, we find the most interesting is the production of a color octet, isosinglet vector meson (a "gluon-prime") via q\bar{q} to ω_8. Leading decay modes are π_8^\pm W^\mp, π_8^0Z^0, and constituent quark decay, with q\bar{q} and t\bar{t}' and b\bar{b}' subdominant. The color octet, isovector pseudoscalar π_8 meson decays via constituent quark decay, or to Wg. These decay rates are parameterized by the decay constant, the binding energy and mass differences, and V_{tb'}. For small V_{t'b}, one could have a spectacular signal of WWg, where a soft W accompanies a very massive Wg pair. In general, however, one has high multiplicity signals with b, W and t jet substructures that are not so different from t'\bar{t}' and b'\bar{b}' search.

Measuring the Fourth Generation b --> s Quadrangle at the LHC

We show that simultaneous precision measurement of the CP-violating phase in time-dependent Bs --> J/psi phi study and the Bs --> mu+ mu- rate, together with measuring m_t' by direct search at the LHC, would determine V_{t's}^*V_{t'b} and therefore the b --> s quadrangle in the four-generation standard model. The forward-backward asymmetry in B --> K* l+ l- provides further discrimination.

Neutron EDM in Four Generation Standard Model

A fourth generation of quarks, if it exist, may provide sufficient CP violation for the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We estimate the neutron electric dipole moment in the presence of a fourth generation, and find it would be dominated by the strange quark chromoelectric dipole moment, assuming it does not get wiped out by a Peccei-Quinn symmetry. Both the three electroweak loop and the two-loop electroweak/one-loop gluonic contributions are considered. With m_{b'}, m_{t'} at 500 GeV or so that can be covered at the LHC, and with a Jarlskog CPV factor that is consistent with hints of New Physics in b to s transitions, the neutron EDM is found around 10^{-31}e cm, still far below the 10^{-28}e cm reach of the new experiments being planned or under construction.

Threshold Effects in the Decay of Heavy b' and t' Quarks

A sequential fourth generation is still viable, but the t' and b' quarks are constrained to be not too far apart in mass. The t'{\to}bW and b'{\to}tW decay channels are still being pursued at the Tevatron, which would soon be surpassed by the LHC. We use a convolution method with up to five-body final state to study t' and b' decays. We show how the two decay branches for m_{b'} below the tW threshold, b'{\to}tW^* and t^*W, merge with b'{\to}tW above the threshold. We then consider the heavy-to-heavy transitions b'{\to}t^{\prime(*)}W^{(*)} (or t'{\to}b^{\prime(*)}W^{(*)}), as they are not suppressed by quark mixing. We find that, because of the threshold sensitivity of the branching fraction of t'{\to}b'W^* (or b'{\to}t'W^*), it is possible to measure the strength of the CKM mixing element V_{t'b} (or V_{tb'}), especially when it is rather small. We urge the experiments to pursue and separate the t'{\to}b'W^* (or b'{\to}t'W^*) decay in their search program.

An Updated Numerical Analysis of eV Seesaw with Four Generations

We consider the so-called "eV seesaw" scenario, with right-handed Majorana mass $M_R$ at eV order, extended to four lepton generations. The fourth generation gives a heavy pseudo-Dirac neutral lepton, which largely decouples from other generations and is relatively stable. The framework naturally gives 3 active and 3 sterile neutrinos. We update a previous numerical analysis of a 3+3 study of the LSND anomaly, taking into account the more recent results from the MiniBooNE experiment. In particular, we study the implications for the third mixing angle $\mathrm{sin}^2θ_{13}$, as well as CP violation. We find that current data do not seriously constrain more than one sterile neutrinos.

Leading Effect of CP Violation with Four Generations

In the Standard Model with a fourth generation of quarks, we study the relation between the Jarlskog invariants and the triangle areas in the 4-by-4 CKM matrix. To identify the leading effects that may probe the CP violation in processes involving quarks, we invoke small mass and small angle expansions, and show that these leading effects are enhanced considerably compared to the three generation case by the large masses of fourth generation quarks. We discuss the leading effect in several cases, in particular the possibility of large CP violation in $ b \to s $ processes, which echoes the heightened recent interest because of experimental hints.

CP Violation in Fourth Generation Quark Decays

We show that, if a fourth generation is discovered at the Tevatron or LHC, one could study CP violation in b' \to s decays. Asymmetries could reach 30% for b'\to sZ for m_{b'} \lesssim 350 GeV, while it could be greater than 50% for b'\to sγand extend to higher m_{b'}. Branching ratios are 10^{-3}--10^{-5}, and CPV measurement requires tagging. Once measured, however, the CPV phase can be extracted with little theoretical uncertainty.

eV Seesaw with Four Generations

We extend the eV seesaw scenario to four lepton generations. The LSND anomaly is taken as the right-handed seesaw scale, i.e. m_R ~ eV. The fourth generation then gives a heavy pseudo-Dirac neutrino which largely decouples from other generations, and is relatively stable. One effectively has a 3+3 solution to the LSND anomaly, where we illustrate with numerical solutions. Our study indicates that the third mixing angle sin^2(theta13) is likely less than 0.01.

Flavor Changing Neutral Currents involving Heavy Quarks with Four Generations

We study various FCNC involving heavy quarks in the Standard Model (SM) with a sequential fourth generation. After imposing $B\to X_sγ$, $B\to X_sl^+l^-$ and $Z\to b\bar{b}$ constraints, we find ${\cal B}(Z\to s\bar{b}+\bar{s}b)$ can be enhanced by an order of magnitude to $10^{-7}$, while $t\to cZ, cH$ decays can reach $10^{-6}$, which are orders of magnitude higher than in SM. However, these rates are still not observable for the near future. With the era of LHC approaching, we focus on FCNC decays involving fourth generation $b^\prime$ and $t^\prime$ quarks. We calculate the rates for loop induced FCNC decays $b^\prime\to bZ, bH, bg, bγ$, as well as $t^\prime\to tZ,\tH, tg, tγ$. If $|V_{cb'}|$ is of order $|V_{cb}| \simeq 0.04$, tree level $b^\prime\to cW$ decay would dominate, posing a challenge since $b$-tagging is less effective. For $|V_{cb'}| \ll |V_{cb}|$, $b'\to tW$ would tend to dominate, while $b'\to t^\prime W^*$ could also open for heavier $b'$, leading to thepossibility of quadruple-$W$ signals via $b'\bar b'\to b\bar b W^+W^-W^+W^-$. The FCNC $b'\to bZ, bH$ decays could still dominate if $m_{b'}$ is just above 200 GeV. For the case of $t'$, ingeneral $t^\prime\to bW$ would be dominant, hence it behaves like a heavy top. For both $b'$ and $t'$, except for the intriguing light $b'$ case, FCNC decays are in the $10^{-4} -10^{-2}$ range, and are quite detectable at the LHC.For a possible future ILC, we find the associated production of FCNC $e^+e^-\to b\bar s$, $t\bar c$ are below sensitivity, while $e^+e^-\to b^\prime\bar b$ and$t^\prime\bar t$ can be better probed.Tevatron Run-II can still probe the lighter $b'$ or $t'$ scenario. LHC would either discover the fourth generation and measure the FCNC rates, or rule out the fourth generation conclusively.

Highlights from Five Years at the B Factories

The highlights and conflicts at the B Factories are briefly reviewed. $CP$ violation was established in 2001 in $B^0 \to J/ψK_S$ and related modes, which has now become a precision measurement of CP violation in $B^0$-$\bar B^0$ mixing. However, the situation for the $B^0 \to π^+π^-$ and charmless $b\to s$ modes, which probe also CP violation in the {\it decay} amplitude, are not quite settled yet. They could be hinting at presence of both strong (CP conserving) and new physics (CP violating) phases. We critically assess the developments and discuss some related discrepancies and highlights, such as observation of direct CP violation, and make a projection towards the next few years.

B->J/psi K* in a Supersymmetric Right-handed Flavor Mixing Scenario

A supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, with maximal s_R-b_R mixing and a new source of CP violation, contains all the necessary ingredients to account for a possible anomaly in the measured CP asymmetry in B->phi K_s decay. In the same framework we study the decay B->J/psi K*, paying particular attention to observables that can be extracted by performing a time dependent angular analysis, and become nonzero because of new physics effects.

Collider Phenomenology of Light Strange-beauty Squarks

Strong mixing between right-handed strange and beauty squarks is a possible solution to the CP violation discrepancy in $B\to ϕK_S$ decay as recently suggested by the Belle data. In this scenario, thanks to the strong mixing one of the strange-beauty squarks can be as light as 200 GeV, even though the generic supersymmetry scale is at TeV. In this work, we study the production of this light right-handed strange-beauty squark at hadronic colliders and discuss the detection in various decay scenarios. Detection prospect at the Tevatron Run II is good for the strange-beauty squark mass up to about 300 GeV.

Effect of Supersymmetric Right-handed Flavor Mixing on $B_s$ decays

Motivated by the possibility of ${\cal S}_{ϕK_S}<0$, we study the implications for $B_s$ meson system. In a specific model that realizes ${\cal S}_{ϕK_S}<0$ with large $s$-$b$ mixing, right-handed dynamics and a new CP phase, we present predictions for CP asymmetries in $B_s\to J/ψϕ$, $K^+K^-$ and $ϕγ$ decays. Even if the measurement of time-dependent CP asymmetry becomes hampered by very fast $B_s$ oscillation, a finite difference between the decay rates of $B_s$ mass eigenstates may enable the studies of CP violations with untagged data samples. Thus, studies of CP violation in the $B_s$ system would remain useful for the extraction of new physics information.

$\bar B^0\to ϕK_S$ and $\bar K^{*0}γ$ CP Asymmetries from Supersymmetric Right-handed Flavor Mixing: Implications for Heavy Quark Phenomenology

Two recent experimental developments, when combined, may have far reaching implications. $S_{ϕK_S} < 0$, if confirmed, would imply large $s$-$b$ mixing, a new CP phase, and right-handed dynamics. Large $Δm_{B_s}$ would be likely, making the $B_s$ program at hadron machines difficult. Reconstruction of $B$ vertex from $K_S$ at B factories, as shown by BaBar's first measurement of $S_{K_Sπ^0}$, makes $S_{K_Sπ^0γ}$ in $\bar B\to \bar K^{*0}γ$ accessible. This would be a boon for B factory upgrades. Supersymmetric Abelian flavor symmetry, independently motivated, can realize all of this with a light $\widetilde{sb}_1$ squark. B factory and collider studies of flavor, CP and SUSY may not be what we had expected.

Effect of Fourth Generation CP Phase on b\to s Transitions

We study the effect of a sequential fourth generation on b\to s gamma, B_s mixing, B\to K^{(*)}\ell^+\ell^-, X_s\ell^+\ell^- and ϕK_S, taking into account the presence of a new CP phase in quark mixing. We find that the effects via electromagnetic and strong penguins, such as in b\to s gamma or CP violation in B\to ϕK_S, are rather mild, but impact via box or Z penguins is quite significant. Not only can one have much larger than expected B_s mixing, even if it is measured near the present limit, mixing dependent CP violation could become maximal. For electroweak penguin modes, the fourth generation can provide the enhancement that perhaps may be needed, while the m_{\ell^+\ell^-} dependence of the forward-backward asymmetry in B\to K^{*}\ell^+\ell^- can further probe for the fourth generation. These effects can be studied in detail at the B factories and the Tevatron.

B meson decays to baryons in the diquark model

We study B meson decays to two charmless baryons in the diquark model, including strong and electroweak penguins as well as the tree operators. It is shown that penguin operators can enhance $\bar{B} \to \Bb_s \bar{\Bb}$ considerably, but affect $\bar{B} \to \Bb_1 \bar{\Bb}_2$ only slightly, where $\Bb_{(1,2)}$ and $\Bb_s$ are non-strange and strange baryons, respectively. The $γ$ dependence of the decay rates due to tree-penguin interference is illustrated. In principle, some of the $\Bb_s \bar{\Bb}$ modes could dominate over $\Bb_1 \bar{\Bb}_2$ for $γ> 90^\circ$, but in general the effect is milder than their mesonic counterparts. This is because the $O_6$ operator can only produce vector but not scalar diquarks, while the opposite is true for $O_1$ and $O_4$. Predictions from diquark model are compared to those from the sum rule calculation. The decays $\bar{B} \to \Bb_s \bar{\Bb}_s$ and inclusive baryonic decays are also discussed.

Impact of a Light Strange-Beauty Squark on B_s Mixing and Direct Search

If one has Abelian flavor symmetry, $s_R$-$b_R$ mixing could be near maximal. This can drive a "strange-beauty" squark ($\widetilde{sb}_{1}$) to be rather light, but still evade the $b\to sγ$ constraint. Low energy constraints imply that all other superpartners are at TeV scale, except for a possibly light neutralino, $\widetilde χ_1^0$. Whether light or heavy, the $\widetilde{sb}_{1}$ can impact on the $B_s$ system: $Δm_{B_s}$ and indirect CP phase, even for $B_s \to ϕγ$. Direct search is similar to usual $\tilde b \to b\widetilde χ_1^0$, but existing bounds are weakened by $\widetilde{sb}_{1} \to s\widetilde χ_1^0$ possibility. All these effects could be studied soon at the Tevatron.

Probing for the Charm Content of $B$ and $Υ$ Mesons

A slow $J/ψ$ bump exists in the inclusive $B\to J/ψ+ X$ spectrum, while the softness of $J/ψ$ spectrum in $Υ(1S) \to J/ψ+ X$ decay is in strong contrast with expectations from color octet mechanism. We propose {\it intrinsic} charm as the explanation:the former is due to $\bar B\to J/ψD π$,with three charm quarks in the final state; the latter is just a small fraction of $Υ(1S) \to (c\bar c)_{\rm slow} + 2$"jet" events, where the slow moving $c\bar c$ system evolves into $D^{(*)}$ pairs. Experimental search for these phenomena at B Factories and the Tevatron is strongly urged, as the implications go beyond QCD.

Supersymmetric Model Contributions to $B^0_d$--$\bar B^0_d$ Mixing and $B\toππ,ργ$ Decays

Recent results from Belle and BaBar Collaborations hint at a small $\sin2ϕ_1$, while the measured $B\toππ$ rate also seems to be on the low side. Supersymmetric (SUSY) models with down squark mixings can account for the deficits in both cases. By studying the origin of SUSY contributions that could impact on $B^0_d$--$\bar B^0_d$ mixing and $B\toππ$ decay, we find that the former would most likely arise from left-left or right-right squark mixings, while the latter would come from left-right squark mixings. These two processes in general are not much correlated in the Minimum Supersymmetric Standard Model. If the smallness of $B\toππ$ is due to SUSY models, one would likely have large $B\toργ$ from chiral enhancement, and the rate could be within present experimental reach. Even if $B\toργ$ is not greatly enhanced, it could have large mixing dependent CP violation.

Window on Higgs Boson: Fourth Generation $b^\prime$ Decays Revisited

Direct and indirect searches of the Higgs boson suggest that 113 GeV $\lesssim m_H \lesssim$ 170 GeV is likely. With the LEP era over and the Tevatron Run II search via $p\bar p \to WH+X$ arduous, we revisit a case where $WH$ or $ZH +$ jets could arise via strong $b^\prime\bar b^\prime$ pair production. In contrast to 10 years ago, the tight electroweak constraint on $t^\prime$--$b^\prime$ (hence $t^\prime$--$t$) splitting reduces FCNC $b^\prime\to bZ$, $bH$ rates, making $b^\prime\to cW$ naturally competitive. Such a "cocktail solution" is precisely the mix that could evade the CDF search for $b^\prime\to bZ$, and the $b^\prime$ may well be lurking below the top. In light of the Higgs program, this two-in-one strategy should be pursued.

CP Violating B ---> s Gamma Decay in Supersymmetric Models

Supersymmetric models with nonuniversal down type squark masses can enrich the chiral structure and CP violating phenomena in $b\to sγ$ decays. Direct CP violation in $b\to s γ$, mixing induced CP violation in radiative $B_{d,s}$ decays (such as $B_s\to ϕγ$ and $B_d \to K^*_{1,2}γ$), and $Λ$ polarization in $Λ_b \to Λγ$ can be substantially different from the Standard Model. Future experiements at $e^+ e^-$ and hadronic B factories will give important information on the underlying theory for radiative $b$ decays.

Probing Flavor Changing Neutral Higgs Couplings at LHC

Uniquely heavy with mass at the weak scale, the top quark may have large flavor changing couplings to Higgs bosons that are as yet unexplored. We show that such couplings can be directly probed at the LHC through the parton subprocess $c(\bar c)g \to t (\bar t)A^0$, where the pseudoscalar $A^0$ subsequently decays into $t \bar c$ or ${\bar t} c$, giving rise to the intriguing final state of like sign top quark pairs. After demanding $\ell^\pm\ell^\pm$, missing energy and two $b$-jets, the major background turns out to be $q\bar q' \to Wt \bar t$, which can be partially suppressed by jet counting. The signal can then manifest itself in the asymmetry of numbers of $\ell^+\ell^+$ and $\ell^-\ell^-$ events. To further improve the signal over background, efficient $t$ vs. $\bar t$ tagging methods should be developed.

Glueballs: Charmonium Decay and $\bar p p$ Annihilation

The vector glueball $O$, made of 3 valence gluons, is expected to be ``clean": it mixes less with quarkonia, but mediates OZI violations. The recent $0^{++} $ glueball candidate and the persistence of the $J/ψ, ψ' \to ρπ$ puzzle suggest $m_O\simeq m_{J/ψ}$, with mixing angle $\sim 2^\circ - 4^\circ$, hence $Γ(O\to ρπ$, $K^+K^-$, $e^+e^-) \sim$ MeV, few keV, few eV. Lower and upper bounds on $Γ_O$ can be argued from $e^+e^- \to ρπ$ energy scan data and the condition $B(O\to ρπ) > B(J/ψ\to ρπ)$. $O$ dominance may explain the ``large" OZI violation in $^1S_0(\bar pp)\to ϕγ$ vs. $ωγ$.

$R_b$ -- $R_c$ Crisis and New Physics

The experimental values of $R_b$ and $R_c$ are the only data which do not seem to agree with Standard Model predictions. Although it is still premature to draw any definite conclusions, it is timely to look for new physics which could explain the excess in $R_b$ and deficit in $R_c$. We investigate this problem in a simple extension of the Standard Model, where a charge $+2/3$ isosinglet quark is added to the standard spectrum. Upon the further introduction of an extra scalar doublet, one finds a solution with interesting consequences.

$μ^+e^- <---> μ^- e^+$ Transitions via Neutral Scalar Bosons

With $μ\to eγ$ decay forbidden by multiplicative lepton number conservation, we study muonium--antimuonium transitions induced by neutral scalar bosons. Pseudoscalars do not induce conversion for triplet muonium, while for singlet muonium, pseudoscalar and scalar contributions add constructively. This is in contrast to the usual case of doubly charged scalar exchange, where the conversion rate is the same for both singlet and triplet muonium. Complementary to muonium conversion studies, high energy $μ^+e^- \to μ^- e^+$ and $e^-e^- \to μ^- μ^-$ collisions could reveal spectacular resonance peaks for the cases of neutral and doubly charged scalars, respectively.

Like Sign Top Quark Pair Production at Linear Colliders

In the general two Higgs doublet model with flavor changing neutral Higgs couplings, neutral Higgs bosons may decay dominantly via $t\bar c$ or $\bar tc$ final states. At the linear collider, $e^+e^- \to h^0A^0$ or $H^0A^0$ production processes may result in $b\bar bt\bar c$, $W^+W^-t\bar c$ or $tt\bar c\bar c$ (or $\bar t\bar tcc$) final states. The process $γγ\to h^0,\ A^0 \to t\bar c$ is also promising, but $e^+e^- \to (h^0,\ H^0) Z^0 \to t\bar c Z^0$ is relatively suppressed. The possibility of observing like sign lepton pairs, usually the hallmark for neutral meson mixing, is quite interesting since $T^0$ mesons do not even form.

Magnetic Field Dependence of Muonium-antimuonium Conversion

We study the magnetic field dependence of muonium--antimuonium conversion induced by neutral (pseudo)scalar bosons. Only the $SS$ operator contributes to the conversion of polarized muonium, but it gets quenched by a magnetic field of strength 0.1 Gauss or stronger. Conversion induced by $SS$ couplings for unpolarized muonium is independent of magnetic field. Magnetic fields of 0.1 Tesla or stronger starts to suppress conversion induced by $PP$ interactions in the lowest Breit-Rabi level, but gets partially compensated by a rise in conversion probability in the other unpolarized level. The effects of $(S\mp P)(S\mp P)$ and $(S\mp P)(S\pm P)$ operators behave in the same way as $(V\mp A)(V\mp A)$ and $(V\mp A)(V\pm A)$ operators, respectively.

Perspective on Quark Mass and Mixing Relations

Recent data indicate that $V_{ub}\cong λ^4 \cong (0.22)^4$, while $m_t$ seems to be $174$ GeV. The relations $m_d/m_s\sim m_s/m_b \sim δ\sim λ^2 \simeq \vert V_{cb}\vert$ and $m_u/m_c\sim m_c/m_t \sim δ^2 \sim λ^4 \sim \vert V_{ub}\vert$ suggest that %a plausible clean separation of the %origin of the quark mixing matrix: the down type sector is responsible for $\vert V_{us}\vert$ and $\vert V_{cb}\vert$, while $V_{ub}$ comes from the up type sector. Five to six parameters might suffice to account for the ten quark mass and mixing parameters, resulting in specific power series representations for the mass matrices. In this picture, $δ$ seems to be the more sensible expansion parameter, while $λ\cong \sqrt{m_d/m_s} \sim \sqrtδ$ is tied empirically to $(M_d)_{11} = 0$.
