Heavy-Flavor-Conserving Hadronic Weak Decays of Charmed and Bottom Baryons

Three decades ago, heavy-flavor-conserving (HFC) weak decays of heavy baryons such as $Ξ_Q\toΛ_Qπ$ and $Ω_Q\toΞ_Qπ$ for $Q=c,b$ had been studied within the framework that incorporates both heavy-quark and chiral symmetries. It was pointed out that if the heavy quark in the HFC process behaves as a spectator, then the $P$-wave amplitude of ${\cal B}_{\bar 3}\to {\cal B}_{\bar 3}+π$ with ${\cal B}_{\bar 3}$ being an antitriplet heavy baryon will vanish in the heavy quark limit. Indeed, this is the case for $Ξ_b\toΛ_b π$ decays. For $Ξ_c\toΛ_cπ$ decays, they receive additional nonspectator contributions arising from the $W$-exchange diagrams through the $cs\to dc$ transition. Spectator and nonspectator $W$-exchange contributions to the $S$-wave amplitude of $Ξ_c\toΛ_cπ$ are destructive, rendering the $S$-wave contribution even smaller. However, the nonspectator effect on the $P$-wave amplitude was overlooked in all the previous model calculations until a very recent investigation within the framework of a constituent quark model in which the parity-conserving pole terms were found to be dominant in $Ξ_c\toΛ_cπ$ decays. Since the pion produced in the HFC process is soft, we apply current algebra to study both $S$- and $P$-wave amplitudes and employ the bag and diquark models to estimate the matrix elements of four-quark operators. We confirm that $Ξ_c\toΛ_cπ$ decays are indeed dominated by the parity-conserving transition induced from nonspectator $W$-exchange and that they receive largest contributions from the intermediate $Σ_c$ pole terms. We also show that the $S$-wave of $Ω_b\to Ξ_b π$ decays vanishes in the heavy quark limit, while $Ω_c\to Ξ_cπ$ receive additional $W$-exchange contributions via $cs\to dc$ transition.

Mass Testing and Characterization of 20-inch PMTs for JUNO

Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3 % at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5,000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

JUNO Physics and Detector

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a 20 kton LS detector at 700-m underground. An excellent energy resolution and a large fiducial volume offer exciting opportunities for addressing many important topics in neutrino and astro-particle physics. With 6 years of data, the neutrino mass ordering can be determined at 3-4 sigma and three oscillation parameters can be measured to a precision of 0.6% or better by detecting reactor antineutrinos. With 10 years of data, DSNB could be observed at 3-sigma; a lower limit of the proton lifetime of 8.34e33 years (90% C.L.) can be set by searching for p->nu_bar K^+; detection of solar neutrinos would shed new light on the solar metallicity problem and examine the vacuum-matter transition region. A core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 IBD and ~2000 (300) all-flavor neutrino-proton (electron) scattering events. Geo-neutrinos can be detected with a rate of ~400 events/year. We also summarize the final design of the JUNO detector and the key R&D achievements. All 20-inch PMTs have been tested. The average photon detection efficiency is 28.9% for the 15,000 MCP PMTs and 28.1% for the 5,000 dynode PMTs, higher than the JUNO requirement of 27%. Together with the >20 m attenuation length of LS, we expect a yield of 1345 p.e. per MeV and an effective energy resolution of 3.02%/\sqrt{E (MeV)}$ in simulations. The underwater electronics is designed to have a loss rate <0.5% in 6 years. With degassing membranes and a micro-bubble system, the radon concentration in the 35-kton water pool could be lowered to <10 mBq/m^3. Acrylic panels of radiopurity <0.5 ppt U/Th are produced. The 20-kton LS will be purified onsite. Singles in the fiducial volume can be controlled to ~10 Hz. The JUNO experiment also features a double calorimeter system with 25,600 3-inch PMTs, a LS testing facility OSIRIS, and a near detector TAO.

A compact analytical approximation for a light sterile neutrino oscillation in matter

The existence of light sterile neutrinos is a long standing question for particle physics. Several experimental ``anomalies'' could be explained by introducing ~eV mass scaled light sterile neutrinos. Many experiments are actively hunting for such light sterile neutrinos through neutrino oscillation. For long baseline experiments, matter effect needs to be treated carefully for precise neutrino oscillation probability calculation. However, it is usually time-consuming or analytical complexity. In this manuscript we adopt the Jacobi-like method to diagonalize the Hermitian Hamiltonian matrix and derive analytically simplified neutrino oscillation probabilities for 3 (active) + 1 (sterile)-neutrino mixing for a constant matter density. These approximations can reach quite high numerical accuracy while keeping its analytical simplicity and fast computing speed. It would be useful for the current and future long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

Feasibility and physics potential of detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos at JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory~(JUNO) features a 20~kt multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator sphere as its main detector. Some of JUNO's features make it an excellent experiment for $^8$B solar neutrino measurements, such as its low-energy threshold, its high energy resolution compared to water Cherenkov detectors, and its much large target mass compared to previous liquid scintillator detectors. In this paper we present a comprehensive assessment of JUNO's potential for detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos via the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process. A reduced 2~MeV threshold on the recoil electron energy is found to be achievable assuming the intrinsic radioactive background $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th in the liquid scintillator can be controlled to 10$^{-17}$~g/g. With ten years of data taking, about 60,000 signal and 30,000 background events are expected. This large sample will enable an examination of the distortion of the recoil electron spectrum that is dominated by the neutrino flavor transformation in the dense solar matter, which will shed new light on the tension between the measured electron spectra and the predictions of the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework. If $Δm^{2}_{21}=4.8\times10^{-5}~(7.5\times10^{-5})$~eV$^{2}$, JUNO can provide evidence of neutrino oscillation in the Earth at the about 3$σ$~(2$σ$) level by measuring the non-zero signal rate variation with respect to the solar zenith angle. Moveover, JUNO can simultaneously measure $Δm^2_{21}$ using $^8$B solar neutrinos to a precision of 20\% or better depending on the central value and to sub-percent precision using reactor antineutrinos. A comparison of these two measurements from the same detector will help elucidate the current tension between the value of $Δm^2_{21}$ reported by solar neutrino experiments and the KamLAND experiment.

Hadronic weak decays of the charmed baryon $Ω_c$

Two-body hadronic weak decays of the charmed baryon $Ω_c$, including Cabibbo-favored (CF), singly Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) and doubly Cabibbo-suppressed (DCS) modes, are studied systematically in this work. To estimate nonfactorizable contributions, we work in the pole model for the $P$-wave amplitudes and current algebra for the $S$-wave amplitudes. Among all the channels decaying into a baryon octet and a pseudoscalar meson, $Ω_c\to Ξ^0\overline{K}^0$ is the only allowed CF mode. The predicted branching fraction of order $3.8\%$ and large and positive decay asymmetry of order $0.50$ indicate that a measurement of this mode in the near future is promising. Proceeding through purely nonfactorizable contributions, the SCS mode $Ω_c\toΛ^0\overline{K}^0$ and DCS mode $Ω_c\toΛ^0 η$ are predicted to have branching fractions as large as $0.8\%$ and $0.4\%$, respectively. The two DCS modes $Ω_c\toΣ^0η$ and $Ω_c\toΛ^0π^0$ are suggested to serve as new physics searching channels for their vanishing SM background.

TAO Conceptual Design Report: A Precision Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum with Sub-percent Energy Resolution

The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO, also known as JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). A ton-level liquid scintillator detector will be placed at about 30 m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. The reactor antineutrino spectrum will be measured with sub-percent energy resolution, to provide a reference spectrum for future reactor neutrino experiments, and to provide a benchmark measurement to test nuclear databases. A spherical acrylic vessel containing 2.8 ton gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator will be viewed by 10 m^2 Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) of >50% photon detection efficiency with almost full coverage. The photoelectron yield is about 4500 per MeV, an order higher than any existing large-scale liquid scintillator detectors. The detector operates at -50 degree C to lower the dark noise of SiPMs to an acceptable level. The detector will measure about 2000 reactor antineutrinos per day, and is designed to be well shielded from cosmogenic backgrounds and ambient radioactivities to have about 10% background-to-signal ratio. The experiment is expected to start operation in 2022.

Two-body hadronic weak decays of antitriplet charmed baryons

We study Cabibbo-favored (CF) and singly Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) two-body hadronic weak decays of the antitriplet charmed baryons $Λ_c^+$, $Ξ_c^0$ and $Ξ_c^+$ with more focus on the last two. Both factorizable and nonfactorizable contributions are considered in the topologic diagram approach. The estimation of nonfactorizable contributions from $W$-exchange and inner $W$-emission diagrams relies on the pole model and current algebra. The non-perturbative parameters in both factorizable and nonfactorizable parts are calculated in the MIT bag model. Branching fractions and up-down decay asymmetries for all the CF and SCS decays of antitriplet charmed baryons are presented. The prediction of $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_c^+\to Ξ^0π^+ )$ agrees well with the measurements inferred from Belle and CLEO, while the calculated ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0\to Ξ^-π^+)$ is too large compared to the recent Belle measurement. We conclude that these two $Ξ_c\toΞπ^+$ modes cannot be simultaneously explained within the current-algebra framework for $S$-wave amplitudes. This issue needs to be resolved in future study. The long-standing puzzle with the branching fraction and decay asymmetry of $Λ_c^+\toΞ^0 K^+$ is resolved by noting that only type-II $W$-exchange diagram will contribute to this mode. We find that not only the calculated rate agrees with experiment but also the predicted decay asymmetry is consistent with the SU(3)-flavor symmetry approach in sign and magnitude. Likewise, the CF mode $Ξ_c^0\to Σ^+K^-$ and the SCS decays $Ξ_c^0\to pK^-,Σ^+π^-$ proceed only through type-II $W$-exchange. They are predicted to have large and {\it positive} decay asymmetries. These features can be tested in the near future.

Two-body weak decays of doubly charmed baryons

The hadronic two-body weak decays of the doubly charmed baryons $Ξ_{cc}^{++}, Ξ_{cc}^+$ and $Ω_{cc}^+$ are studied in this work. To estimate the nonfactorizable contributions, we work in the pole model for the $P$-wave amplitudes and current algebra for $S$-wave ones. For the $Ξ_{cc}^{++}\to Ξ_c^+π^+$ mode, we find a large destructive interference between factorizable and nonfactorizable contributions for both $S$- and $P$-wave amplitudes. Our prediction of $\sim 0.70\%$ for its branching fraction is smaller than the earlier estimates in which nonfactorizable effects were not considered, but agrees nicely with the result based on an entirely different approach, namely, the covariant confined quark model. On the contrary, a large constructive interference was found in the $P$-wave amplitude by Dhir and Sharma, leading to a branching fraction of order $(7-16)\%$. Using the current results for the absolute branching fractions of $(Λ_c^+,Ξ_c^+)\to p K^-π^+$ and the LHCb measurement of $Ξ_{cc}^{++}\toΞ_c^+π^+$ relative to $Ξ_{cc}^{++}\toΛ_c^+ K^- π^+π^+$, we obtain $\B(Ξ_{cc}^{++}\toΞ_c^+π^+)_{\rm expt}\approx (1.83\pm1.01)\%$ after employing the latest prediction of $\B(Ξ_{cc}^{++}\toΣ_c^{++}\overline{K}^{*0})$. Our prediction of $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_{cc}^{++}\toΞ_c^+π^+)\approx 0.7\%$ is thus consistent with the experimental value but in the lower end. It is important to pin down the branching fraction of this mode in future study. Factorizable and nonfactorizable $S$-wave amplitudes interfere constructively in $Ξ_{cc}^+\toΞ_c^0π^+$. Its large branching fraction of order 4\% may enable experimentalists to search for the $Ξ_{cc}^+$ through this mode. That is, the $Ξ_{cc}^+$ is reconstructed through the $Ξ_{cc}^+\toΞ_c^0π^+$ followed by the decay chain $Ξ_c^0\to Ξ^-π^+\to pπ^-π^-π^+$.

Charged Lepton Flavor Violating Processes and Scalar Leptoquark Decay Branching Ratios in the Colored Zee-Babu Model

We consider a neutrino mass generating model which employs a scalar leptoquark, $Δ$, and a scalar diquark, $S$. The new scalars $Δ$ and $S$ carry the standard model $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ quantum numbers $(3,1,-1/3)$ and $(6,1,-2/3)$, respectively. The neutrino masses are generated at the two-loop level, as in the Zee-Babu model\cite{Zee-Babu}, and $Δ/S$ plays the role of the doubly/singly charged scalar in the Zee-Babu model. With a moderate working assumption that the magnitudes of the six Yukawa couplings between $S$ and the down-type quarks are of the same order, strong connections are found between the neutrino masses and the charged lepton flavor violating processes. In particular, we study $Z\rightarrow \overline{l} l'$, and $l\rightarrow l' γ$ and find that some portions of the parameter space of this model are within the reach of the planned charged lepton flavor violating experiments. Interesting lower bounds are predicted that $B(Z\rightarrow \overline{l} l')\gtrsim 10^{-16}-10^{-14}(10^{-14})\times(1\mbox{TeV}\cdot m_S/7 m_Δ^2)^2$ and $B(l\rightarrow l' γ)\gtrsim 10^{-17}-10^{-16}(10^{-18}-10^{-16})\times(1 \mbox{TeV}\cdot m_S/7 m_Δ^2)^2$ for neutrino masses being the normal(inverted) hierarchical pattern. The type of neutrino mass hierarchy could also be determined by measuring the charged lepton flavor violating double ratios. Moreover, definite leptoquark decay branching ratios are predicted when there is no Yukawa interaction between the right-handed fermions and $Δ$ ( the branching fraction of $Δ$ to a charged lepton and a quark is 50\%), which could help refine the collider search limit on the scalar leptoquark mass.

Correlating $B_q^0 \to μ^+μ^-$ and $K_L \to π^0ν\barν$ Decays with Four Generations

The long-awaited $B_s\to μ^+μ^-$ mode has finally been observed at rate consistent with Standard Model, albeit lower by 1.2$σ$. There is some hint for New Physics in the rarer $B_d^0 \to μ^+μ^-$ decay, especially if the currently 2.2$σ$-enhanced central value persists with more data. The measurement of $CP$ violating phase $ϕ_s$, via both $B_s\to J/ψK\bar K$ and $J/ψππ$ modes, has reached Standard Model sensitivity. These measurements stand major improvement when LHC enters Run 2. Concurrently, the $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ and $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ modes are being pursued in a similar time frame. We illustrate the possible correlations between New Physics effects in these four modes, using the fourth generation as example. While correlations may or may not exist in other New Physics models, the four generation model can accommodate enhancements in both $B_d^0 \to μ^+μ^-$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$.

Dark $Z$ Implication for Flavor Physics

Dark $Z$/dark photon ($Z'$) is one candidate of dark force carrier, which helps to interpret the properties of dark matter (DM). Other than traditional studies of DM including direct detection, indirect detection and collider simulation, in this work we take flavor physics as a complementary approach to investigate the features of dark matter. We give an exact calculation of the new type of penguin diagram induced by $Z'$ which further modifies the well-known $X, Y, Z$ functions in penguin-box expansion. The measurement of rare decays $B\to K^{(*)}μ^+μ^-$ and $B_s\to μ^+μ^-$ at LHC, together with direct CP violation $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in $K\toππ$ as well as $K_L\toμ^+μ^-$, are used to determine the parameter space. The size of coupling constant, however, is found to be $\mathcal{O}(1)$ which is much weaker than the known constraints.

Rates and Asymmetries of B --> pi l+ l- Decays

The LHCb experiment observed B+ --> pi+ mu+ mu- decay with 1.0 fb^-1 data, which is the first measurement of a flavor changing neutral current b --> d l+ l- decay (l = e, mu). Based on QCD factorization, we give Standard Model predictions for the branching ratios, direct CP asymmetries, and isospin asymmetry for B --> pi l+ l- decays, in the kinematic region where the dilepton invariant mass is small. We find that the contribution from weak annihilation enhances the direct CP asymmetry for low l+ l- pair mass. Anticipating improved measurements, we assess the utility of B+ --> pi+ l+ l- observables, when combined with B0 --> pi- l+ nu and B+ --> K+ l+ l-, for determining CKM parameters in the future.

An effective gauge-Higgs operators analysis of new physics associated with the Higgs

We study the new physics(NP) related to the recent discovered 125 GeV Higgs by employing an important subset of the standard model(SM) gauge invariant dimension-six operators constructed by the the SM Higgs and gauge fields. Explicitly, we perform a model-independent study on the production and decays of the Higgs, the electric dipole moments(EDM) of the neutron and the electron, and we take into account the anomalous magnetic dipole moments of muon and electron as well. We find that, even all Higgs decay channels agree with the SM predictions, the SM theoretical uncertainties provide a lot of room to host NP associated with the 125 GeV boson. A linear relation is revealed in our numerical study that $μ_{ZZ}\simeq μ_{WW}$ and $ 0.6 \lesssim μ_{ZZ,WW} \lesssim 1.4$ at 95% CL with or without the EDM's constraints. The neutron and electron EDM's severely constrain the relevant Wilson coefficients. Therefore the CP violating components in the $h\rightarrow WW, ZZ$ channels are too small, $\sim{\cal O}(10^{-5})$, to be detected at LHC. However, we point out that even the parity of the 125GeV boson has been largely determined to be even in the $h\to ZZ$ channel, one should pay special attention to the potentially large CP violation in the $h\to γγ$ and $h\to γZ$ channels. This should be seriously checked in the future spin correlation experiments.

Implication of possible observation of enhanced Bd0 --> mu+ mu- decay

The very rare Bd0 --> mu+ mu- decay may be the last chance for New Physics in flavor sector at the LHC, before the 13 TeV run in 2015. Partially motivated by the known tension in sin(2beta/phi_1), enhancement beyond (3-4) x 10^-10 would likely imply the effect of a fourth generation of quarks. If observed at this level, the 126 GeV boson may not be the actual Higgs boson, while the b --> d quadrangle (modulo m_t') would jump out. The 2011-2012 data is likely not sensitive to values below 3 x 10^-10, and the mode should continue to be pursued with the 13 TeV run.

Hints for a Low Bs --> mu+ mu- Rate and the Fourth Generation

With full 2011 LHC data analyzed, there is no indication for deviation from Standard Model (SM) in CP violating phase for Bs --> J/psi phi, nor in the forward-backward asymmetry for B0 --> K*0 mu+ mu-. SM sensitivity, however, has been reached for Bs --> mu+ mu- rate, and there may be some hint for a suppression. We illustrate that, if a suppressed B(Bs --> mu+ mu-) bears out with 2012 data, it would imply a lower bound on the fourth generation quark mixing product |V_{t's}^*V_{t'b}|.

Measuring the Fourth Generation b --> s Quadrangle at the LHC

We show that simultaneous precision measurement of the CP-violating phase in time-dependent Bs --> J/psi phi study and the Bs --> mu+ mu- rate, together with measuring m_t' by direct search at the LHC, would determine V_{t's}^*V_{t'b} and therefore the b --> s quadrangle in the four-generation standard model. The forward-backward asymmetry in B --> K* l+ l- provides further discrimination.

Neutron EDM in Four Generation Standard Model

A fourth generation of quarks, if it exist, may provide sufficient CP violation for the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We estimate the neutron electric dipole moment in the presence of a fourth generation, and find it would be dominated by the strange quark chromoelectric dipole moment, assuming it does not get wiped out by a Peccei-Quinn symmetry. Both the three electroweak loop and the two-loop electroweak/one-loop gluonic contributions are considered. With m_{b'}, m_{t'} at 500 GeV or so that can be covered at the LHC, and with a Jarlskog CPV factor that is consistent with hints of New Physics in b to s transitions, the neutron EDM is found around 10^{-31}e cm, still far below the 10^{-28}e cm reach of the new experiments being planned or under construction.

P-odd and CP-odd Four-Quark Contributions to Neutron EDM

In a class of beyond-standard-model theories, CP-odd observables, such as the neutron electric dipole moment, receive significant contributions from flavor-neutral P-odd and CP-odd four-quark operators. However, considerable uncertainties exist in the hadronic matrix elements of these operators strongly affecting the experimental constraints on CP-violating parameters in the theories. Here we study their hadronic matrix elements in combined chiral perturbation theory and nucleon models. We first classify the operators in chiral representations and present the leading-order QCD evolutions. We then match the four-quark operators to the corresponding ones in chiral hadronic theory, finding symmetry relations among the matrix elements. Although this makes lattice QCD calculations feasible, we choose to estimate the non-perturbative matching coefficients in simple quark models. We finally compare the results for the neutron electric dipole moment and P-odd and CP-odd pion-nucleon couplings with the previous studies using naive factorization and QCD sum rules. Our study shall provide valuable insights on the present hadronic physics uncertainties in these observables.

Loop Corrections to Cosmological Perturbations in Multi-field Inflationary Models

We investigate one-loop quantum corrections to the power spectrum of adiabatic perturbation from entropy modes/adiabatic mode cross-interactions in multiple DBI inflationary models. We find that due to the non-canonical kinetic term in DBI models, the loop corrections are enhanced by slow-varying parameter $ε$ and small sound speed $c_s$. Thus, in general the loop-corrections in multi-DBI models can be large. Moreover, we find that the loop-corrections from adiabatic/entropy cross-interaction vertices are IR finite.

Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Constraint on Scale of Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model

Using an effective theory approach, we calculate the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) in the minimal left-right symmetric model with both explicit and spontaneous CP violations. We integrate out heavy particles to obtain flavor-neutral CP-violating effective Lagrangian. We run the Wilson coefficients from the electroweak scale to the hadronic scale using one-loop renormalization group equations. Using the state-of-the-art hadronic matrix elements, we obtain the nEDM as a function of right-handed W-boson mass and CP-violating parameters. We use the current limit on nEDM combined with the kaon-decay parameter $ε$ to provide the most stringent constraint yet on the left-right symmetric scale $ M_{W_R} > (10 \pm 3) $ TeV.
