Reconstruction of atmospheric neutrinos in DUNE's horizontal-drift far-detector module

This paper reports on the capabilities in reconstructing and identifying atmospheric neutrino interactions in one of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment's (DUNE) far detector modules, a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) with horizontal drift (FD-HD) of ionization electrons. The reconstruction is based upon the workflow developed for DUNE's long-baseline oscillation analysis, with some necessary machine-learning models' retraining and the addition of features relevant only to atmospheric neutrinos such as the neutrino direction reconstruction. Where relevant, the impact of the detection of the charged particles of the hadronic system is emphasized, and comparisons are carried out between the case when lepton-only information is considered in the reconstruction (as is the case for many neutrino oscillation experiments), versus when all particles identified in the LArTPC were included. Three neutrino direction reconstruction methods have been developed and studied for the atmospheric analyses: using lepton-only information, using all reconstructed particles, and using only correlations from reconstructed hits. The results indicate that incorporating more than just lepton information significantly improves the resolution of both neutrino direction and energy reconstruction. The angle reconstruction algorithms developed in this work result in no strong dependence on particle direction for reconstruction efficiencies or neutrino flavor identification. This comprehensive review of the reconstruction of atmospheric neutrinos in DUNE's FD-HD LArTPC is the first step towards developing a first neutrino oscillation sensitivity analysis, which will ready DUNE for its first measurements.

First Measurement of Differential Cross Sections for Muon Neutrino Charged Current Interactions on Argon with a Two-proton Final State in the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first measurement of differential cross sections for charged-current muon neutrino interactions on argon with one muon, two protons, and no pions in the final state. These final states are dominated by two-nucleon knockout interactions, which are complicated to model and for which there is currently limited information about the characteristics of these interactions in existing neutrino-nucleus scattering data. Detailed investigations of two-nucleon knockout are vital to support upcoming experiments exploring the nature of the neutrino. Among the different kinematic quantities measured, the opening angle between the two protons, the angle between the total proton momentum and the muon, and the total transverse momentum of the final state system are most sensitive to the underlying physics processes as embodied in various theoretical models.

A deep-learning based raw waveform region-of-interest finder for the liquid argon time projection chamber

The liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) detector technology has an excellent capability to measure properties of low-energy neutrinos produced by the sun and supernovae and to look for exotic physics at very low energies. In order to achieve those physics goals, it is crucial to identify and reconstruct signals in the waveforms recorded on each TPC wire. In this paper, we report on a novel algorithm based on a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) to look for the region-of-interest (ROI) in raw waveforms. We test this algorithm using data from the ArgoNeuT experiment in conjunction with an improved noise mitigation procedure and a more realistic data-driven noise model for simulated events. This deep-learning ROI finder shows promising performance in extracting small signals and gives an efficiency approximately twice that of the traditional algorithm in the low energy region of $\sim$0.03-0.1 MeV. This method offers great potential to explore low-energy physics using LArTPCs.

Calorimetric classification of track-like signatures in liquid argon TPCs using MicroBooNE data

The MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located at Fermilab is a neutrino experiment dedicated to the study of short-baseline oscillations, the measurements of neutrino cross sections in liquid argon, and to the research and development of this novel detector technology. Accurate and precise measurements of calorimetry are essential to the event reconstruction and are achieved by leveraging the TPC to measure deposited energy per unit length along the particle trajectory, with mm resolution. We describe the non-uniform calorimetric reconstruction performance in the detector, showing dependence on the angle of the particle trajectory. Such non-uniform reconstruction directly affects the performance of the particle identification algorithms which infer particle type from calorimetric measurements. This work presents a new particle identification method which accounts for and effectively addresses such non-uniformity. The newly developed method shows improved performance compared to previous algorithms, illustrated by a 94% proton selection efficiency and a 10% muon mis-identification rate, with a fairly loose selection of tracks performed on beam data. The performance is further demonstrated by identifying exclusive final states in $ν_μ CC$ interactions. While developed using MicroBooNE data and simulation, this method is easily applicable to future LArTPC experiments, such as SBND, ICARUS, and DUNE.

Cosmic ray muon clustering for the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber using sMask-RCNN

In this article, we describe a modified implementation of Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask-RCNN) for cosmic ray muon clustering in a liquid argon TPC and applied to MicroBooNE neutrino data. Our implementation of this network, called sMask-RCNN, uses sparse submanifold convolutions to increase processing speed on sparse datasets, and is compared to the original dense version in several metrics. The networks are trained to use wire readout images from the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber as input and produce individually labeled particle interactions within the image. These outputs are identified as either cosmic ray muon or electron neutrino interactions. We find that sMask-RCNN has an average pixel clustering efficiency of 85.9% compared to the dense network's average pixel clustering efficiency of 89.1%. We demonstrate the ability of sMask-RCNN used in conjunction with MicroBooNE's state-of-the-art Wire-Cell cosmic tagger to veto events containing only cosmic ray muons. The addition of sMask-RCNN to the Wire-Cell cosmic tagger removes 70% of the remaining cosmic ray muon background events at the same electron neutrino event signal efficiency. This event veto can provide 99.7% rejection of cosmic ray-only background events while maintaining an electron neutrino event-level signal efficiency of 80.1%. In addition to cosmic ray muon identification, sMask-RCNN could be used to extract features and identify different particle interaction types in other 3D-tracking detectors.

Differential cross section measurement of charged current $ν_{e}$ interactions without final-state pions in MicroBooNE

In this letter we present the first measurements of an exclusive electron neutrino cross section with the MicroBooNE experiment using data from the Booster Neutrino Beamline at Fermilab. These measurements are made for a selection of charged-current electron neutrinos without final-state pions. Differential cross sections are extracted in energy and angle with respect to the beam for the electron and the leading proton. The differential cross section as a function of proton energy is measured using events with protons both above and below the visibility threshold. This is done by including a separate selection of electron neutrino events without reconstructed proton candidates in addition to those with proton candidates. Results are compared to the predictions from several modern generators, and we find the data agrees well with these models. The data shows best agreement, as quantified by $p$-value, with the generators that predict a lower overall cross section, such as GENIE v3 and NuWro.

Electromagnetic Shower Reconstruction and Energy Validation with Michel Electrons and $π^0$ Samples for the Deep-Learning-Based Analyses in MicroBooNE

This article presents the reconstruction of the electromagnetic activity from electrons and photons (showers) used in the MicroBooNE deep learning-based low energy electron search. The reconstruction algorithm uses a combination of traditional and deep learning-based techniques to estimate shower energies. We validate these predictions using two $ν_μ$-sourced data samples: charged/neutral current interactions with final state neutral pions and charged current interactions in which the muon stops and decays within the detector producing a Michel electron. Both the neutral pion sample and Michel electron sample demonstrate agreement between data and simulation. Further, the absolute shower energy scale is shown to be consistent with the relevant physical constant of each sample: the neutral pion mass peak and the Michel energy cutoff.

First constraints on light sterile neutrino oscillations from combined appearance and disappearance searches with the MicroBooNE detector

We present a search for eV-scale sterile neutrino oscillations in the MicroBooNE liquid argon detector, simultaneously considering all possible appearance and disappearance effects within the $3+1$ active-to-sterile neutrino oscillation framework. We analyze the neutrino candidate events for the recent measurements of charged-current $ν_e$ and $ν_μ$ interactions in the MicroBooNE detector, using data corresponding to an exposure of 6.37$\times$10$^{20}$ protons on target from the Fermilab booster neutrino beam. We observe no evidence of light sterile neutrino oscillations and derive exclusion contours at the $95\%$ confidence level in the plane of the mass-squared splitting $Δm^2_{41}$ and the sterile neutrino mixing angles $θ_{μe}$ and $θ_{ee}$, excluding part of the parameter space allowed by experimental anomalies. Cancellation of $ν_e$ appearance and $ν_e$ disappearance effects due to the full $3+1$ treatment of the analysis leads to a degeneracy when determining the oscillation parameters, which is discussed in this paper and will be addressed by future analyses.

First Measurement of Energy-Dependent Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on Argon with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report a measurement of the energy-dependent total charged-current cross section $σ\left(E_ν\right)$ for inclusive muon neutrinos scattering on argon, as well as measurements of flux-averaged differential cross sections as a function of muon energy and hadronic energy transfer ($ν$). Data corresponding to 5.3$\times$10$^{19}$ protons on target of exposure were collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam with a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. The mapping between the true neutrino energy $E_ν$ and reconstructed neutrino energy $E^{rec}_ν$ and between the energy transfer $ν$ and reconstructed hadronic energy $E^{rec}_{had}$ are validated by comparing the data and Monte Carlo (MC) predictions. In particular, the modeling of the missing hadronic energy and its associated uncertainties are verified by a new method that compares the $E^{rec}_{had}$ distributions between data and an MC prediction after constraining the reconstructed muon kinematic distributions, energy and polar angle, to those of data. The success of this validation gives confidence that the missing energy in the MicroBooNE detector is well-modeled and underpins first-time measurements of both the total cross section $σ\left(E_ν\right)$ and the differential cross section $dσ/dν$ on argon.

First Measurement of Inclusive Electron-Neutrino and Antineutrino Charged Current Differential Cross Sections in Charged Lepton Energy on Argon in MicroBooNE

We present the first measurement of the single-differential $ν_e + \barν_e$ charged-current inclusive cross sections on argon in electron or positron energy and in electron or positron scattering cosine over the full angular range. Data were collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located off-axis from the Fermilab Neutrinos at the Main Injector beam over an exposure of $2.0\times10^{20}$ protons on target. The signal definition includes a 60 MeV threshold on the $ν_e$ or $\barν_e$ energy and a 120 MeV threshold on the electron or positron energy. The measured total and differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the GENIE, NuWro, and GiBUU neutrino generators.

Low-Energy Physics in Neutrino LArTPCs

In this white paper, we outline some of the scientific opportunities and challenges related to detection and reconstruction of low-energy (less than 100 MeV) signatures in liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) detectors. Key takeaways are summarized as follows. 1) LArTPCs have unique sensitivity to a range of physics and astrophysics signatures via detection of event features at and below the few tens of MeV range. 2) Low-energy signatures are an integral part of GeV-scale accelerator neutrino interaction final states, and their reconstruction can enhance the oscillation physics sensitivities of LArTPC experiments. 3) BSM signals from accelerator and natural sources also generate diverse signatures in the low-energy range, and reconstruction of these signatures can increase the breadth of BSM scenarios accessible in LArTPC-based searches. 4) Neutrino interaction cross sections and other nuclear physics processes in argon relevant to sub-hundred-MeV LArTPC signatures are poorly understood. Improved theory and experimental measurements are needed. Pion decay-at-rest sources and charged particle and neutron test beams are ideal facilities for experimentally improving this understanding. 5) There are specific calibration needs in the low-energy range, as well as specific needs for control and understanding of radiological and cosmogenic backgrounds. 6) Novel ideas for future LArTPC technology that enhance low-energy capabilities should be explored. These include novel charge enhancement and readout systems, enhanced photon detection, low radioactivity argon, and xenon doping. 7) Low-energy signatures, whether steady-state or part of a supernova burst or larger GeV-scale event topology, have specific triggering, DAQ and reconstruction requirements that must be addressed outside the scope of conventional GeV-scale data collection and analysis pathways.

Magnetic Field Measurement and Analysis for the Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab

The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has measured the anomalous precession frequency $a^{}_μ= (g^{}_μ-2)/2$ of the muon to a combined precision of 0.46 parts per million with data collected during its first physics run in 2018. This paper documents the measurement of the magnetic field in the muon storage ring. The magnetic field is monitored by nuclear magnetic resonance systems and calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^\circ$C. The measured field is weighted by the muon distribution resulting in $\tildeω'^{}_p$, the denominator in the ratio $ω^{}_a$/$\tildeω'^{}_p$ that together with known fundamental constants yields $a^{}_μ$. The reported uncertainty on $\tildeω'^{}_p$ for the Run-1 data set is 114 ppb consisting of uncertainty contributions from frequency extraction, calibration, mapping, tracking, and averaging of 56 ppb, and contributions from fast transient fields of 99 ppb.

Novel Approach for Evaluating Detector-Related Uncertainties in a LArTPC Using MicroBooNE Data

Primary challenges for current and future precision neutrino experiments using liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) include understanding detector effects and quantifying the associated systematic uncertainties. This paper presents a novel technique for assessing and propagating LArTPC detector-related systematic uncertainties. The technique makes modifications to simulation waveforms based on a parameterization of observed differences in ionization signals from the TPC between data and simulation, while remaining insensitive to the details of the detector model. The modifications are then used to quantify the systematic differences in low- and high-level reconstructed quantities. This approach could be applied to future LArTPC detectors, such as those used in SBN and DUNE.

Search for an anomalous excess of charged-current quasi-elastic $ν_e$ interactions with the MicroBooNE experiment using Deep-Learning-based reconstruction

We present a measurement of the $ν_e$-interaction rate in the MicroBooNE detector that addresses the observed MiniBooNE anomalous low-energy excess (LEE). The approach taken isolates neutrino interactions consistent with the kinematics of charged-current quasi-elastic (CCQE) events. The topology of such signal events has a final state with 1 electron, 1 proton, and 0 mesons ($1e1p$). Multiple novel techniques are employed to identify a $1e1p$ final state, including particle identification that use two methods of deep-learning-based image identification, and event isolation using a boosted decision-tree ensemble trained to recognize two-body scattering kinematics. This analysis selects 25 $ν_e$-candidate events in the reconstructed neutrino energy range of 200--1200\,MeV, while $29.0 \pm 1.9_\text{(sys)} \pm 5.4_\text{(stat)}$ are predicted when using $ν_μ$ CCQE interactions as a constraint. We use a simplified model to translate the MiniBooNE LEE observation into a prediction for a $ν_e$ signal in MicroBooNE. A $Δχ^2$ test statistic, based on the combined Neyman--Pearson $χ^2$ formalism, is used to define frequentist confidence intervals for the LEE signal strength. Using this technique, in the case of no LEE signal, we expect this analysis to exclude a normalization factor of 0.75 (0.98) times the median MiniBooNE LEE signal strength at 90\% ($2σ$) confidence level, while the MicroBooNE data yield an exclusion of 0.25 (0.38) times the median MiniBooNE LEE signal strength at 90\% ($2σ$) confidence

Search for Neutrino-Induced Neutral Current $Δ$ Radiative Decay in MicroBooNE and a First Test of the MiniBooNE Low Energy Excess Under a Single-Photon Hypothesis

We report results from a search for neutrino-induced neutral current (NC) resonant $Δ$(1232) baryon production followed by $Δ$ radiative decay, with a $\langle0.8\rangle$~GeV neutrino beam. Data corresponding to MicroBooNE's first three years of operations (6.80$\times$10$^{20}$ protons on target) are used to select single-photon events with one or zero protons and without charged leptons in the final state ($1\gamma1p$ and $1\gamma0p$, respectively). The background is constrained via an in-situ high-purity measurement of NC $π^0$ events, made possible via dedicated $2\gamma1p$ and $2\gamma0p$ selections. A total of 16 and 153 events are observed for the $1\gamma1p$ and $1\gamma0p$ selections, respectively, compared to a constrained background prediction of $20.5 \pm 3.65 \text{(sys.)} $ and $145.1 \pm 13.8 \text{(sys.)} $ events. The data lead to a bound on an anomalous enhancement of the normalization of NC $Δ$ radiative decay of less than $2.3$ times the predicted nominal rate for this process at the 90% confidence level (CL). The measurement disfavors a candidate photon interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess as a factor of $3.18$ times the nominal NC $Δ$ radiative decay rate at the 94.8% CL, in favor of the nominal prediction, and represents a greater than $50$-fold improvement over the world's best limit on single-photon production in NC interactions in the sub-GeV neutrino energy range

The Phase-I Trigger Readout Electronics Upgrade of the ATLAS Liquid Argon Calorimeters

The Phase-I trigger readout electronics upgrade of the ATLAS Liquid Argon calorimeters enhances the physics reach of the experiment during the upcoming operation at increasing Large Hadron Collider luminosities. The new system, installed during the second Large Hadron Collider Long Shutdown, increases the trigger readout granularity by up to a factor of ten as well as its precision and range. Consequently, the background rejection at trigger level is improved through enhanced filtering algorithms utilizing the additional information for topological discrimination of electromagnetic and hadronic shower shapes. This paper presents the final designs of the new electronic elements, their custom electronic devices, the procedures used to validate their proper functioning, and the performance achieved during the commissioning of this system.

Superconductivity in Scandium Borocarbide with orbital hybridization

Exploration of superconductivity in light element compounds has drawn considerable attention because those materials can easily realize the high $T_{c}$ superconductivity, such as ${\mathrm{LnNi}}_{2}{\mathrm{B}_{2}}{\mathrm{C}}$ ($T_{c}$ =17 K), ${\mathrm{Mg}}{\mathrm{B}}_{2}$ ($T_{c}$ =39 K), and very recently super-hydrides under pressure ($T_{c}$ =250 K). Here we report the discovery of bulk superconductivity at 7.8 K in scandium borocarbide ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{20}{\mathrm{B}}{\mathrm{C}}_{27}$ with a tetragonal lattice which structure changes based on the compound of ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{3}{\mathrm{C}}_{4}$ with very little B doping. Magnetization and specific heat measurements show bulk superconductivity. An upper critical field of Hc2(0) ~ 8 T is determined. Low temperature specific-heat shows that this system is a BCS fully gapped s-wave superconductor. Electronic structure calculations demonstrate that compared with ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{3}{\mathrm{C}}_{4}$ there are more orbital overlap and hybridization between Sc 3d electrons and 2p electrons of C-C(B)-C fragment in ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{20}{\mathrm{B}}{\mathrm{C}}_{27}$, which form a new electric conduction path of Sc-C(B)-Sc. Those changes influence the band structure at the Fermi level and may be the reason of superconductivity in ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{20}{\mathrm{B}}{\mathrm{C}}_{27}$.

The Continuous Readout Stream of the MicroBooNE Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber for Detection of Supernova Burst Neutrinos

The MicroBooNE continuous readout stream is a parallel readout of the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) which enables detection of non-beam events such as those from a supernova neutrino burst. The low energies of the supernova neutrinos and the intense cosmic-ray background flux due to the near-surface detector location makes triggering on these events very challenging. Instead, MicroBooNE relies on a delayed trigger generated by SNEWS (the Supernova Early Warning System) for detecting supernova neutrinos. The continuous readout of the LArTPC generates large data volumes, and requires the use of real-time compression algorithms (zero suppression and Huffman compression) implemented in an FPGA (field-programmable gate array) in the readout electronics. We present the results of the optimization of the data reduction algorithms, and their operational performance. To demonstrate the capability of the continuous stream to detect low-energy electrons, a sample of Michel electrons from stopping cosmic-ray muons is reconstructed and compared to a similar sample from the lossless triggered readout stream.

Wire-Cell 3D Pattern Recognition Techniques for Neutrino Event Reconstruction in Large LArTPCs: Algorithm Description and Quantitative Evaluation with MicroBooNE Simulation

Wire-Cell is a 3D event reconstruction package for liquid argon time projection chambers. Through geometry, time, and drifted charge from multiple readout wire planes, 3D space points with associated charge are reconstructed prior to the pattern recognition stage. Pattern recognition techniques, including track trajectory and $dQ/dx$ (ionization charge per unit length) fitting, 3D neutrino vertex fitting, track and shower separation, particle-level clustering, and particle identification are then applied on these 3D space points as well as the original 2D projection measurements. A deep neural network is developed to enhance the reconstruction of the neutrino interaction vertex. Compared to traditional algorithms, the deep neural network boosts the vertex efficiency by a relative 30\% for charged-current $ν_e$ interactions. This pattern recognition achieves 80-90\% reconstruction efficiencies for primary leptons, after a 65.8\% (72.9\%) vertex efficiency for charged-current $ν_e$ ($ν_μ$) interactions. Based on the resulting reconstructed particles and their kinematics, we also achieve 15-20\% energy reconstruction resolutions for charged-current neutrino interactions.

Calibration of the charge and energy loss per unit length of the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber using muons and protons

We describe a method used to calibrate the position- and time-dependent response of the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber anode wires to ionization particle energy loss. The method makes use of crossing cosmic-ray muons to partially correct anode wire signals for multiple effects as a function of time and position, including cross-connected TPC wires, space charge effects, electron attachment to impurities, diffusion, and recombination. The overall energy scale is then determined using fully-contained beam-induced muons originating and stopping in the active region of the detector. Using this method, we obtain an absolute energy scale uncertainty of 2\% in data. We use stopping protons to further refine the relation between the measured charge and the energy loss for highly-ionizing particles. This data-driven detector calibration improves both the measurement of total deposited energy and particle identification based on energy loss per unit length as a function of residual range. As an example, the proton selection efficiency is increased by 2\% after detector calibration.

First Measurement of Electron Neutrino Scattering Cross Section on Argon

We report the first electron neutrino cross section measurements on argon, based on data collected by the ArgoNeuT experiment running in the GeV-scale NuMI beamline at Fermilab. A flux-averaged $ν_e + \overlineν_e$ total and a lepton angle differential cross section are extracted using 13 $ν_e$ and $\overlineν_e$ events identified with fully-automated selection and reconstruction. We employ electromagnetic-induced shower characterization and analysis tools developed to identify $ν_e/\overlineν_e$-like events among complex interaction topologies present in ArgoNeuT data ($\langle E_{\barν_e} \rangle = 4.3$ GeV and $\langle E_{ν_e} \rangle = 10.5$ GeV). The techniques are widely applicable to searches for electron-flavor appearance at short- and long-baseline using liquid argon time projection chamber technology. Notably, the data-driven studies of GeV-scale $ν_e/\overlineν_e$ interactions presented in this Letter probe an energy regime relevant for future DUNE oscillation physics.

First order transition in trigonal structure ${\textbf{Ca}}{\textbf{Mn}}_{2}{\textbf{P}}_{2}$

We report structural and physical properties of the single crystalline ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$. The X-ray diffraction(XRD) results show that ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$ adopts the trigonal ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Al}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$-type structure. Temperature dependent electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ measurements indicate an insulating ground state for ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$ with activation energies of 40 meV and 0.64 meV for two distinct regions, respectively. Magnetization measurements show no apparent magnetic phase transition under 400 K. Different from other ${\mathrm{A}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{Pn}}_{2}$ (A = Ca, Sr, and Ba, and Pn = P, As, and Sb) compounds with the same structure, heat capacity $C_{\mathrm{p}}(T)$ and $ρ(T)$ reveal that ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$ has a first-order transition at $T$ = 69.5 K and the transition temperature shifts to high temperature upon increasing pressure. The emergence of plenty of new Raman modes below the transition, clearly suggests a change in symmetry accompanying the transition. The combination of the structural, transport, thermal and magnetic measurements, points to an unusual origin of the transition.

Importance of interactions for the band structure of the topological Dirac semimetal Na3Bi

We experimentally measure the band dispersions of topological Dirac semimetal Na3Bi using Fourier-transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy to image quasiparticle interference on the (001) surface of molecular-beam epitaxy-grown Na3Bi thin films. We find that the velocities for the lowest-lying conduction and valencebands are 1.6x10^6 m/s and 4.2x10^5 m/s respectively, significantly higher than previous theoreticalpredictions. We compare the experimental band dispersions to the theoretical band structures calculated usingan increasing hierarchy of approximations of self-energy corrections due to interactions: generalized gradientapproximation (GGA), meta-GGA, Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functional (HSE06), and GW methods. We find that density functional theory methods generally underestimate the electron velocities. However, we find significantly improved agreement with an increasingly sophisticated description of the exchange and interaction potential, culminating in reasonable agreement with experiments obtained by the GW method. The results indicate that exchange-correlation effects are important in determining the electronicstructure of this Na3Bi, and are likely the origin of the high velocity. The electron velocity is consistent withrecent experiments on ultrathin Na3Bi and also may explain the ultrahigh carrier mobility observed in heavilyelectron-doped Na3Bi.

Improved Limits on Millicharged Particles Using the ArgoNeuT Experiment at Fermilab

A search for millicharged particles, a simple extension of the standard model, has been performed with the ArgoNeuT detector exposed to the Neutrinos at the Main Injector beam at Fermilab. The ArgoNeuT Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber detector enables a search for millicharged particles through the detection of visible electron recoils. We search for an event signature with two soft hits (MeV-scale energy depositions) aligned with the upstream target. For an exposure of the detector of $1.0$ $\times$ $10^{20}$ protons on target, one candidate event has been observed, compatible with the expected background. This search is sensitive to millicharged particles with charges between $10^{-3}e$ and $10^{-1}e$ and with masses in the range from $0.1$ GeV to $3$ GeV. This measurement provides leading constraints on millicharged particles in this large unexplored parameter space region.

Measurement of Differential Cross Sections for $ν_μ$-Ar Charged-Current Interactions with Protons and no Pions in the Final State with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present an analysis of MicroBooNE data with a signature of one muon, no pions, and at least one proton above a momentum threshold of 300 MeV/c (CC0$π$Np). This is the first differential cross section measurement of this topology in neutrino-argon interactions. We achieve a significantly lower proton momentum threshold than previous carbon and scintillator-based experiments. Using data collected from a total of approximately $1.6 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target, we measure the muon neutrino cross section for the CC0$π$Np interaction channel in argon at MicroBooNE in the Booster Neutrino Beam which has a mean energy of around 800 MeV. We present the results from a data sample with estimated efficiency of 29\% and purity of 76\% as differential cross sections in five reconstructed variables: the muon momentum and polar angle, the leading proton momentum and polar angle, and the muon-proton opening angle. We include smearing matrices that can be used to "forward-fold" theoretical predictions for comparison with these data. We compare the measured differential cross sections to a number of recent theory predictions demonstrating largely good agreement with this first-ever data set on argon.

Measurement of Space Charge Effects in the MicroBooNE LArTPC Using Cosmic Muons

Large liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs), especially those operating near the surface, are susceptible to space charge effects. In the context of LArTPCs, the space charge effect is the build-up of slow-moving positive ions in the detector primarily due to ionization from cosmic rays, leading to a distortion of the electric field within the detector. This effect leads to a displacement in the reconstructed position of signal ionization electrons in LArTPC detectors ("spatial distortions"), as well as to variations in the amount of electron-ion recombination experienced by ionization throughout the volume of the TPC. We present techniques that can be used to measure and correct for space charge effects in large LArTPCs by making use of cosmic muons, including the use of track pairs to unambiguously pin down spatial distortions in three dimensions. The performance of these calibration techniques are studied using both Monte Carlo simulation and MicroBooNE data, utilizing a UV laser system as a means to estimate the systematic bias associated with the calibration methodology.

Search for heavy neutral leptons decaying into muon-pion pairs in the MicroBooNE detector

We present upper limits on the production of heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying to $μπ$ pairs using data collected with the MicroBooNE liquid-argon time projection chamber (TPC) operating at Fermilab. This search is the first of its kind performed in a liquid-argon TPC. We use data collected in 2017 and 2018 corresponding to an exposure of $2.0 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam, which produces mainly muon neutrinos with an average energy of $\approx 800$ MeV. HNLs with higher mass are expected to have a longer time-of-flight to the liquid-argon TPC than Standard Model neutrinos. The data are therefore recorded with a dedicated trigger configured to detect HNL decays that occur after the neutrino spill reaches the detector. We set upper limits at the $90\%$ confidence level on the element $\lvert U_{\mu4}\rvert^2$ of the extended PMNS mixing matrix in the range $\lvert U_{\mu4}\rvert^2<(6.6$-$0.9)\times 10^{-7}$ for Dirac HNLs and $\lvert U_{\mu4}\rvert^2<(4.7$-$0.7)\times 10^{-7}$ for Majorana HNLs, assuming HNL masses between $260$ and $385$ MeV and $\lvert U_{e 4}\rvert^2 = \lvert U_{τ4}\rvert^2 = 0$.

A Method to Determine the Electric Field of Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers Using a UV Laser System and its Application in MicroBooNE

Liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) are now a standard detector technology for making accelerator neutrino measurements, due to their high material density, precise tracking, and calorimetric capabilities. An electric field (E-field) is required in such detectors to drift ionized electrons to the anode to be collected. The E-field of a TPC is often approximated to be uniform between the anode and the cathode planes. However, significant distortions can appear from effects such as mechanical deformations, electrode failures, or the accumulation of space charge generated by cosmic rays. The latter is particularly relevant for detectors placed near the Earth's surface and with large drift distances and long drift time. To determine the E-field in situ, an ultraviolet (UV) laser system is installed in the MicroBooNE experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The purpose of this system is to provide precise measurements of the E-field, and to make it possible to correct for 3D spatial distortions due to E-field non-uniformities. Here we describe the methodology developed for deriving spatial distortions, the drift velocity and the E-field from UV-laser measurements.

Multi-messenger nano-probes of hidden magnetism in a strained manganite

The ground state properties of correlated electron systems can be extraordinarily sensitive to external stimuli, such as temperature, strain, and electromagnetic fields, offering abundant platforms for functional materials. We present a metastable and reversible photoinduced ferromagnetic transition in strained films of the doped manganite La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO3. Using the novel multi-messenger combination of atomic force microscopy, cryogenic scanning near-field optical microscopy, magnetic force microscopy, and ultrafast laser excitation, we demonstrate both "writing" and "erasing" of a metastable ferromagnetic metal phase with nanometer-resolved finesse. By tracking both optical conductivity and magnetism at the nano-scale, we reveal how spontaneous strain underlies the thermal stability, persistence, and reversal of this photoinduced metal. Our first-principles electronic structure calculations reveal how an epitaxially engineered Jahn-Teller distortion can stabilize nearly degenerate antiferromagnetic insulator and ferromagnetic metal phases. We propose a Ginzburg-Landau description to rationalize the co-active interplay of strain, lattice distortion, and magnetism we resolve in strained LCMO, thus guiding future functional engineering of epitaxial oxides like manganites into the regime of phase-programmable materials.

Reconstruction and Measurement of $\mathcal{O}$(100) MeV Energy Electromagnetic Activity from $π^0 \rightarrow γγ$ Decays in the MicroBooNE LArTPC

We present results on the reconstruction of electromagnetic (EM) activity from photons produced in charged current $ν_μ$ interactions with final state $π^0$s. We employ a fully-automated reconstruction chain capable of identifying EM showers of $\mathcal{O}$(100) MeV energy, relying on a combination of traditional reconstruction techniques together with novel machine-learning approaches. These studies demonstrate good energy resolution, and good agreement between data and simulation, relying on the reconstructed invariant $π^0$ mass and other photon distributions for validation. The reconstruction techniques developed are applied to a selection of $ν_μ + {\rm Ar} \rightarrow μ+ π^0 + X$ candidate events to demonstrate the potential for calorimetric separation of photons from electrons and reconstruction of $π^0$ kinematics.

Observations of Heteroclinic Bifurcations in Resistive MHD Simulations of the Plasma Response to Resonant Magnetic Perturbations

A new class of static magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) magnetic island bifurcations is identified in rotating spherical tokamak plasmas during single- and two-fluid resistive MHD simulations. As the magnitude of an externally applied non-axisymmetric magnetic field perturbation is increased in these simulations, the internal flux surfaces that make up a sub-set of the resonant helical magnetic islands in the plasma gradually elongate and undergo heteroclinic bifurcations. The bifurcation results in the creation of a new set of hyperbolic-elliptic fixed points as predicted by the Poincaré-Birkoff fixed point theorem. Field line calculations without including the resistive MHD plasma response to the applied perturbation field do not undergo this class of bifurcations indicating the importance of plasma self-organization in the bifurcation process.

Frustrated Ising chains on the triangular lattice in Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$

Inelastic neutron scattering study on the spin-chain compound Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$ reveals gapped quasi-1D magnetic excitations. The observed one-magnon band between 29.5 and 39 meV consists of magnon modes of the Ni$^{2+}$ ions. The fitting of the spin wave spectrum reveals strongly coupled Ising-like chains along the $c$-axis that are weakly coupled into a frustrated triangular lattice in the $ab$-plane. The magnetic excitations survive up to 200 K well above the magnetic ordering temperature of $T_N \sim 75$ K, also indicating a quasi-1D nature of the magnetic interactions in Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$. Our microscopic model is in good agreement with ab initio electronic structure calculations and explains the giant spin flip field observed in bulk magnetization measurements.

Terminal-Set-Enhanced Community Detection in Social Networks

Community detection aims to reveal the community structure in a social network, which is one of the fundamental problems. In this paper we investigate the community detection problem based on the concept of terminal set. A terminal set is a group of users within which any two users belong to different communities. Although the community detection is hard in general, the terminal set can be very helpful in designing effective community detection algorithms. We first present a 2-approximation algorithm running in polynomial time for the original community detection problem. In the other issue, in order to better support real applications we further consider the case when extra restrictions are imposed on feasible partitions. For such customized community detection problems, we provide two randomized algorithms which are able to find the optimal partition with a high probability. Demonstrated by the experiments performed on benchmark networks the proposed algorithms are able to produce high-quality communities.

Giant gap in the magnon excitations of the quasi-1D chain compound Sr3NiIrO6

Inelastic neutron scattering on the spin-chain compound Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$ reveals gapped quasi-1D magnetic excitations. The observed one-magnon band between 29.5 and 39 meV consists of two dispersive modes. The spin wave spectrum could be well fitted with an antiferromagnetic anisotropic exchange model and single ion anisotropy on the Ni site. The extracted dominant anisotropic antiferromagnetic intra-chain exchange interaction between Ir and Ni ions are $J_z=19.5$ meV and $J_{xy}=12.1$ meV. These values justify previous electronic structure calculations, showing the importance of Ir spin orbit coupling on the electron correlations. The magnetic excitations survive up to 200 K well above the magnetic ordering temperature of $T_N \sim 70$ K, also indicating a quasi-1D nature of the magnetic interactions in Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$. Our results not only support the idea of the existence of a new temperature scale well above $T_N$, but also emphasize the need to consider new exchange paths complicated by the SOC, resulting in additional characteristic temperatures in such spin-chain systems.

Granular front formation in free-surface flow of concentrated suspensions

Granular fronts are a common yet unexplained phenomenon emerging during the gravity driven free-surface flow of concentrated suspensions. They are usually believed to be the result of fluid convection in combination with particle size segregation. However, suspensions composed of uniformly sized particles also develop a granular front. Within a large rotating drum, a stationary recirculating avalanche is generated. The flowing material is a mixture of a visco-plastic fluid obtained from a kaolin-water dispersion, with spherical ceramic particles denser than the fluid. The goal is to mimic the composition of many common granular-fluid materials, like fresh concrete or debris flow. In these materials, granular and fluid phases have the natural tendency to segregate due to particle settling. However, through the shearing caused by the rotation of the drum, a reorganization of the phases is induced, leading to the formation of a granular front. By tuning the material properties and the drum velocity, it is possible to control this phenomenon. The setting is reproduced in a numerical environment, where the fluid is solved by a Lattice-Boltzmann Method, and the particles are explicitly represented using the Discrete Element Method. The simulations confirm the findings of the experiments, and provide insight into the internal mechanisms. Comparing the time-scale of particle settling with the one of particle recirculation, a non-dimensional number is defined, and is found to be effective in predicting the formation of a granular front.

Search for the $η_c(2S)/h_c\to p\bar{p}$ decays and measurements of the $χ_{cJ}\to p\bar{p}$ branching fractions

Using a sample of $1.06\times10^{8}~ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, the decays $η_{c}(2S)\to p\bar{p}$ and $h_{c}\to p\bar{p}$ are searched for, where $η_c(2S)$ and $h_c$ are reconstructed in the decay chains $ψ(3686)\toγη_{c}(2S)$, $η_{c}(2S)\to p\bar{p}$ and $ψ(3686)\toπ^{0}h_{c}$, $h_{c}\to p\bar{p}$, respectively. No significant signals are observed. The upper limits of the product branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S))\times\mathcal{B}(η_{c}(2S)\to p\bar{p})<1.4\times10^{-6}$ and $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\toπ^0h_c)\times\mathcal{B}(h_{c}\to p\bar{p})<1.3\times10^{-7}$ at the 90% C.L.. The branching fractions for $χ_{cJ}\to p\bar{p}$ $(J=0,~1,~2)$ are also measured to be $(24.5\pm0.8\pm1.3,~8.6\pm0.5\pm0.5,~8.4\pm0.5\pm0.5)\times10^{-5}$, which are the world's most precise measurements.

Study of $ψ(3686)\toπ^0 h_c, h_c\toγη_c$ via $η_c$ exclusive decays

The process $ψ(3686) \to π^0 h_c, h_c \to γη_c$ has been studied with a data sample of $106 \pm 4$ million $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The mass and width of the $P$-wave charmonium spin-singlet state $h_c(^1P_1)$ are determined by simultaneously fitting distributions of the $π^0$ recoil mass for 16 exclusive $η_c$ decay modes. The results, $M(\hc) = 3525.31 \pm 0.11 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.14 {\rm (syst.)}$\,MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ(\hc) = 0.70 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.22$\,MeV, are consistent with and more precise than previous measurements. We also determine the branching ratios for the 16 exclusive $η_c$ decay modes, five of which have not been measured previously. New measurements of the $η_c$ line-shape parameters in the $E1$ transition $h_c\toγη_c$ are made by selecting candidates in the $h_c$ signal sample and simultaneously fitting the hadronic mass spectra for the 16 $η_c$ decay channels. The resulting $η_c$ mass and width values are $M(η_c) = 2984.49 \pm 1.16 \pm 0.52$\,MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ(η_c) = 36.4 \pm 3.2 \pm 1.7$\,MeV.

Optical properties and electronic structure of the nonmetallic metal FeCrAs

The complex optical properties of a single crystal of hexagonal FeCrAs ($T_N \simeq 125$ K) have been determined above and below $T_N$ over a wide frequency range in the planes (along the $b$ axis), and along the perpendicular ($c$ axis) direction. At room temperature, the optical conductivity $σ_1(ω)$ has an anisotropic metallic character. The electronic band structure reveals two bands crossing the Fermi level, allowing the optical properties to be described by two free-carrier (Drude) contributions consisting of a strong, broad component and a weak, narrow term that describes the increase in $σ_1(ω)$ below $\simeq 15$ meV. The dc-resistivity of FeCrAs is ``non-metallic'', meaning that it rises in power-law fashion with decreasing temperature, without any signature of a transport gap. In the analysis of the optical conductivity, the scattering rates for both Drude contributions track the dc-resistivity quite well, leading us to conclude that the non-metallic resistivity of FeCrAs is primarily due to a scattering rate that increases with decreasing temperature, rather than the loss of free carriers. The power law $σ_1(ω) \propto ω^{-0.6}$ is observed in the near-infrared region and as $T\rightarrow T_N$ spectral weight is transferred from low to high energy ($\gtrsim 0.6$ eV); these effects may be explained by either the two-Drude model or Hund's coupling. We also find that a low-frequency in-plane phonon mode decreases in frequency for $T < T_N$, suggesting the possibility of spin-phonon coupling.

Precision measurements of $B(D^+ \rightarrow μ^+ ν_μ)$, the pseudoscalar decay constant $f_{D^+}$, and the quark mixing matrix element $|V_{\rm cd}|$

We report a measurement of the branching fraction $B(D^+ \rightarrow μ^+ ν_μ) = [3.71 \pm 0.19 (\rm stat) \pm 0.06 (\rm sys)]\times 10^{-4}$ based on 2.92 ${\rm fb^{-1}}$ of data accumulated at $\sqrt{s}=3.773$ GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. This measurement, in conjunction with the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{\rm cd}|$ determined from a global Standard Model fit, implies a value for the weak decay constant $f_{D^+}=(203.2 \pm 5.3 \pm 1.8)$ MeV. Additionally, using this branching fraction measurement together with a Lattice QCD prediction for $f_{D^+}$, we find $|V_{\rm cd}|=0.2210\pm 0.0058 \pm 0.0047$. In either case, these are the most precise results for these quantities to date.

Pressure induced superconductivity on the border of magnetic order in MnP

We report the discovery of superconductivity on the border of long-range magnetic order in the itinerant-electron helimagnet MnP via the application of high pressure. Superconductivity with Tsc~1 K emerges and exists merely near the critical pressure Pc~8 GPa, where the long-range magnetic order just vanishes. The present finding makes MnP the first Mn-based superconductor. The close proximity of superconductivity to a magnetic instability suggests an unconventional pairing mechanism. Moreover, the detailed analysis of the normal-state transport properties evidenced non-Fermi-liquid behavior and the dramatic enhancement of the quasi-particle effective mass near Pc associated with the magnetic quantum fluctuations.

Pressure study of nematicity and quantum criticality in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ for an in-plane field

We study the relationship between the nematic phases of Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ and quantum criticality. At ambient pressure, one nematic phase is associated with a metamagnetic quantum critical end point (QCEP) when the applied magnetic field is near the \textit{c}-axis. We show, however, that this metamagnetic transition does not produce the same nematic signatures when the QCEP is reached by hydrostatic pressure with the field applied in the \textit{ab}-plane. Moreover, a second nematic phase, that is seen for field applied in the \textit{ab}-plane close to, but not right at, a second metamagnetic anomaly, persists with minimal change to the highest applied pressure, 16.55 kbar. Taken together our results suggest that metamagnetic quantum criticality may not be necessary for the formation of a nematic phase in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$.

Structural origin of the anomalous temperature dependence of the local magnetic moments in the CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ family of materials

We report a combination of Fe K$β$ x-ray emission spectroscopy and $ab$-intio calculations to investigate the correlation between structural and magnetic degrees of freedom in CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x} $)$_{2}$. The puzzling temperature behavior of the local moment found in rare earth-doped CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ [\textit{H. Gretarsson, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 047003 (2013)}] is also observed in CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$. We explain this phenomenon based on first-principles calculations with scaled magnetic interaction. One scaling parameter is sufficient to describe quantitatively the magnetic moments in both CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x} $)$_{2}$ ($x=0.055$) and Ca$_{0.78}% $La$_{0.22}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ at all temperatures. The anomalous growth of the local moments with increasing temperature can be understood from the observed large thermal expansion of the $c$-axis lattice parameter combined with strong magnetoelastic coupling. These effects originate from the strong tendency to form As-As dimers across the Ca layer in the CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ family of materials. Our results emphasize the dual local-itinerant character of magnetism in Fe pnictides.

Half-filled orbital and unconventional geometry of a common dopant in Si(001)

The determining factor of the bulk properties of doped Si is the column rather than the row in the periodic table from which the dopants are drawn. It is unknown whether the basic properties of dopants at surfaces and interfaces, steadily growing in importance as microelectronic devices shrink, are also solely governed by their column of origin. The common light impurity P replaces individual Si atoms and maintains the integrity of the dimer superstructure of the Si(001) surface, but loses its valence electrons to surface states. Here we report that isolated heavy dopants are entirely different: Bi atoms form pairs with Si vacancies, retain their electrons and have highly localized, half-filled orbitals.

The results show that the dominant $0^{++}$ and $2^{++}$ components are from the $f_0(1710)$, $f_0(2100)$, $f_0(1500)$, $f_2'(1525)$, $f_2(1810)$ and $f_2(2340)$. The resonance parameters and branching fractions are also presented.

Using a sample of $1.06 \times 10^{8}$ $ψ(2S)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, the decay $ψ(2S) \to p \bar{p}η$ is studied. Precision Measurements of ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^+π^- J/ψ]$ and ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to l^+l^-]$

Based on $(106.41 \pm 0.86)\times 10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the branching fractions of $ψ(3686) \to π^+π^- J/ψ$, $J/ψ\to e^+e^- $, and $J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-$ are measured. We obtain ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^+π^-J/ψ]=(34.98\pm 0.02\pm 0.45)%$, ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to e^+e^-] = (5.983 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.037)%$ and ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-] = (5.973 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.038)%$. The measurement of ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ]$ confirms the CLEO-c measurement, and is apparently larger than the others. The measured $J/ψ$ leptonic decay branching fractions agree with previous experiments within one standard deviation. These results lead to ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to l^+l^-] = (5.978 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.040)%$ by averaging over the $e^{+}e^{-}$ and $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ channels and a ratio of ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to e^+e^-] / {\cal B}[J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-] = 1.0017 \pm 0.0017 \pm 0.0033$, which tests $e$-$μ$ universality at the four tenths of a percent level. All the measurements presented in this paper are the most precise in the world to date.

Using a sample of 106 million ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we have made the first measurement of the M1 transition between the radially excited charmonium S-wave spin-triplet and the radially excited S-wave spin-singlet states: ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S). Analyses of the processes ψ(2S)\to γη_c(2S) with η_c(2S)\to \K_S^0 Kπand K^+K^-π^0 gave an η_c(2S) signal with a statistical significance of greater than 10 standard deviations under a wide range of assumptions about the signal and background properties. The data are used to obtain measurements of the η_c(2S) mass (M(η_c(2S))=3637.6\pm 2.9_\mathrm{stat}\pm 1.6_\mathrm{sys} MeV/c^2), width (Γ(η_c(2S))=16.9\pm 6.4_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.8_\mathrm{sys} MeV), and the product branching fraction (\BR(ψ(3686)\to γη_c(2S))\times \BR(η_c(2S)\to K\bar Kπ) = (1.30\pm 0.20_\mathrm{stat}\pm 0.30_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-5}). Large magnetoelectric effect in mechanically mediated structure of TbFe2, Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 and nonmagnetic flakes

Magnetoelectric (ME) effect has been studied in a structure of a magnetostrictive TbFe2 alloy, two piezoelectric Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) ceramics, and two nonmagnetic flakes. The ME coupling originates from the magnetic-mechanical-electric transform of the magnetostrictive effect in TbFe2 and the piezoelectric effect in PZT by end bonding, instead of interface bonding. Large ME coefficients of 10.5 and 9.9 Vcm-1Oe-1 were obtained at the first planar acoustic and third bending resonance frequencies, which are larger than that of conventional layered TbFe2/PZT composites. The results show that the large ME coupling can be achieved without interface coupling.

Spin-state transition in the Fe-pnictides

We report a Fe Kβx-ray emission spectroscopy study of local magnetic moments in the rare-earth doped iron pnictide Ca_{1-x}RE_xFe_2As_2 (RE=La, Pr, and Nd). In all samples studied the size of the Fe local moment is found to decrease significantly with temperature and goes from ~0.9 μ_B at T = 300 K to ~0.45 μ_B at T = 70 K. In the collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase of Nd- and Pr-doped samples (T<70K) the local moment is quenched, while the moment remains unchanged for the La-doped sample, which does not show lattice collapse. Our results show that Ca_{1-x}RE_xFe_2As_2 (RE= Pr and Nd) exhibits a spin-state transition and provide direct evidence for a non-magnetic Fe^{2+} ion in the cT-phase, as predicted by Yildirim. We argue that the gradual change of the the spin-state over a wide temperature range reveals the importance of multiorbital physics, in particular the competition between the crystal field split Fe 3d orbitals and the Hund's rule coupling.

A 2.25$\times10^8$ $\jpsi$ event sample accumulated with the BESIII detector is used to study the doubly OZI suppressed decay modes $\jpsi\toγ\of$, $ω\to\ppp$, $ϕ\to\kk$. A strong deviation ($>$ 30$σ$) from three-body $\jpsi\toγωϕ$ phase space is observed near the $ωϕ$ mass threshold that is consistent with a previous observation reported by the BESII experiment. A partial wave analysis with a tensor covariant amplitude that assumes that the enhancement is due to the presence of a resonance, the X(1810), is performed, and confirms that the spin-parity of the X(1810) is $0^{++}$. The mass and width of the X(1810) are determined to be $M=1795\pm7$(stat)$^{+13}_{-5}$(syst)$\pm$19(mod) MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ=95\pm10$(stat)$^{+21}_{-34}$(syst)$\pm$75(mod) MeV/$c^2$, respectively, and the product branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(\jpsi\toγX(1810))\times{\cal B}(X(1810)\to\of)=(2.00\pm0.08$(stat)$^{+0.45}_{-1.00}$(syst)$\pm$1.30(mod))$\times10^{-4}$. %where the first error is the statistical error and the second the systematical error. We designed, built, and implemented improved versions of the Input Optics for Enhanced LIGO, an incremental upgrade to the Initial LIGO interferometers, designed to run with 30 W input power. At four times the power of Initial LIGO, the Enhanced LIGO Input Optics demonstrated improved performance including better optical isolation, less thermal drift, minimal thermal lensing and higher optical efficiency. We use it to print thin-film transistors, with mobilities up to~95cm^2V^(-1)s(-1), as well as transparent and conductive patterns, with~80 % transmittance and~30kOhm/sq sheet resistance. This paves the way to all-printed, flexible and transparent graphene devices on arbitrary substrates

Quantum critical metamagnetism of Sr3Ru2O7 under hydrostatic pressure

Using ac susceptibility, we have determined the pressure dependence of the metamagnetic critical end point temperature T* for field applied in the ab-plane in the itinerant metamagnet Sr3Ru2O7. We find that T* falls monotonically to zero as pressure increases, producing a quantum critical end point (QCEP) at Pc~13.6 kbar. New features are observed near the QCEP -- the slope of T* vs pressure changes at ~12.8 kbar, and weak subsidiary maxima appear on either side of the main susceptibility peak at pressures near Pc -- indicating that some new physics comes into play near the QCEP. Clear signatures of a nematic phase, however, that were seen in field-angle tuning of T*, are not observed. As T* is suppressed by pressure, the metamagnetic peak in the susceptibility remains sharp as a function of applied magnetic field. As a function of temperature, however, the peak becomes broad with only a very weak maximum, suggesting that, near the QCEP, the uniform magnetization density is not the order parameter for the metamagnetic transition.

Revealing the dual nature of magnetism in iron pnictides and iron chalcogenides using x-ray emission spectroscopy

We report Fe K beta x-ray emission spectroscopy study of local magnetic moments in various iron based superconductors in their paramagnetic phases. Local magnetic moments are found in all samples studied: PrFeAsO, Ba(Fe,Co)2As2, LiFeAs, Fe1+x(Te,Se), and A2Fe4Se5 (A=K, Rb, and Cs). The moment size varies significantly across different families. Specifically, all iron pnictides samples have local moments of about 1 $μ_B$/Fe, while FeTe and K2Fe4Se5 families have much larger local moments of ~2$μ_B$/Fe, ~3.3$μ_B$/Fe, respectively. In addition, we find that neither carrier doping nor temperature change affects the local moment size.

Search for gravitational-wave bursts associated with gamma-ray bursts using data from LIGO Science Run 5 and Virgo Science Run 1

We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave bursts associated with 137 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that were detected by satellite-based gamma-ray experiments during the fifth LIGO science run and first Virgo science run. The data used in this analysis were collected from 2005 November 4 to 2007 October 1, and most of the GRB triggers were from the Swift satellite. The search uses a coherent network analysis method that takes into account the different locations and orientations of the interferometers at the three LIGO-Virgo sites. We find no evidence for gravitational-wave burst signals associated with this sample of GRBs. Using simulated short-duration (<1 s) waveforms, we set upper limits on the amplitude of gravitational waves associated with each GRB. We also place lower bounds on the distance to each GRB under the assumption of a fixed energy emission in gravitational waves, with typical limits of D ~ 15 Mpc (E_GW^iso / 0.01 M_o c^2)^1/2 for emission at frequencies around 150 Hz, where the LIGO-Virgo detector network has best sensitivity. We present astrophysical interpretations and implications of these results, and prospects for corresponding searches during future LIGO-Virgo runs.

Searches for gravitational waves from known pulsars with S5 LIGO data

We present a search for gravitational waves from 116 known millisecond and young pulsars using data from the fifth science run of the LIGO detectors. For this search ephemerides overlapping the run period were obtained for all pulsars using radio and X-ray observations. We demonstrate an updated search method that allows for small uncertainties in the pulsar phase parameters to be included in the search. We report no signal detection from any of the targets and therefore interpret our results as upper limits on the gravitational wave signal strength. The most interesting limits are those for young pulsars. We present updated limits on gravitational radiation from the Crab pulsar, where the measured limit is now a factor of seven below the spin-down limit. This limits the power radiated via gravitational waves to be less than ~2% of the available spin-down power. For the X-ray pulsar J0537-6910 we reach the spin-down limit under the assumption that any gravitational wave signal from it stays phase locked to the X-ray pulses over timing glitches, and for pulsars J1913+1011 and J1952+3252 we are only a factor of a few above the spin-down limit. Of the recycled millisecond pulsars several of the measured upper limits are only about an order of magnitude above their spin-down limits. For these our best (lowest) upper limit on gravitational wave amplitude is 2.3x10^-26 for J1603-7202 and our best (lowest) limit on the inferred pulsar ellipticity is 7.0x10^-8 for J2124-3358.

Optical Metamaterials at Near and Mid IR Range Fabricated by Nanoimprint Lithography

Two types of optical metamaterials operating at near-IR and mid-IR frequencies, respectively, have been designed, fabricated by nanoimprint lithography (NIL), and characterized by laser spectroscopic ellipsometry. The structure for the near-IR range was a metal/dielectric/metal stack "fishnet" structure that demonstrated negative permittivity and permeability in the same frequency region and hence exhibited a negative refractive index at a wavelength near 1.7 um. In the mid-IR range, the metamaterial was an ordered array of four-fold symmetric L-shaped resonators (LSRs) that showed both a dipole plasmon resonance resulting in negative permittivity and a magnetic resonance with negative permeability near wavelengths of 3.7 um and 5.25 um, respectively. The optical properties of both metamaterials are in agreement with theoretical predictions. This work demonstrates the feasibility of designing various optical negative-index metamaterials and fabricating them using the nanoimprint lithography as a low-cost, high-throughput fabrication approach.
