Generalized binomial edge ideals are Cartwright-Sturmfels

Binomial edge ideals associated to a simple graph G were introduced by Herzog and collaborators and, independently, by Ohtani. They became an ``instant classic" in combinatorial commutative algebra with more than 100 papers devoted to their investigation over the past 15 years. They exhibit many striking properties, including being radical and, moreover, Cartwright-Sturmfels. Using the fact that binomial edge ideals can be seen as ideals of 2-minors of a matrix of variables with two rows, generalized binomial edge ideals of 2-minors of matrices of m rows were introduced by Rauh and proved to be radical. The goal of this paper is to prove that generalized binomial edge ideals are Cartwright-Sturmfels. On the way we provide results on ideal constructions preserving the Cartwright-Sturmfels property. We also give examples and counterexamples to the Cartwright-Sturmfels property for higher minors.

Powers of monomial ideals with characteristic-dependent Betti numbers

We explore the dependence of the Betti numbers of monomial ideals on the characteristic of the field. A first observation is that for a fixed prime $p$ either the $i$-th Betti number of all high enough powers of a monomial ideal differs in characteristic $0$ and in characteristic $p$ or it is the same for all high enough powers. In our main results we provide constructions and explicit examples of monomial ideals all of whose powers have some characteristic-dependent Betti numbers or whose asymptotic regularity depends on the field. We prove that, adding a monomial on new variables to a monomial ideal, allows to spread the characteristic dependence to all powers. For any given prime $p$, this produces an edge ideal such that the Betti numbers of all its powers over $\mathbb{Q}$ and over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ are different. Moreover, we show that, for every $r \geq 0$ and $i \geq 3$ there is a monomial ideal $I$ such that some coefficient in a degree $\geq r$ of the Kodiyalam polynomials $\mathfrak P_3(I),\ldots,\mathfrak P_{i+r}(I)$ depends on the characteristic. We also provide a summary of related results and speculate about the behaviour of other combinatorially defined ideals.

Spaces of polynomials with constrained real divisors, II. (Co)homology & stabilization

In the late 80s, V.~Arnold and V.~Vassiliev initiated the topological study of the space of real univariate polynomials of a given degree which have no real roots of multiplicity exceeding a given positive integer. Expanding their studies, we consider the spaces P^{cΘ}_d of real monic univariate polynomials of degree d whose real divisors avoid given sequences of root multiplicities. These forbidden sequences are taken from an arbitrary poset Θof compositions that are closed under certain natural combinatorial operations. We reduce the computation of the homology H_*(P^{cΘ}_d) to the computation of the homology of a differential complex, defined purely combinatorially in terms of the given closed poset Θ. We also obtain the stabilization results about H^\ast(P^{c Θ}_d), as d goes to infinity. These results are deduced from our description of the homology of spaces B^{c Θ}_d whose points are binary real homogeneous forms, considered up to projective equivalence, with similarly Θ-constrained real divisors. In particular, we exhibit differential complexes that calculate the homology of these spaces and obtain some stabilization results for H^*(B^{c Θ}_d), as d goes to infinity. In particular, we compute the homology of the discriminants of projectivized binary real forms for which there is at least one line on which the form vanishes with multiplicity >= 2 and of their complements in \cB_d \cong RP^d.

On the vanishing of discrete singular cubical homology for graphs

We prove that if G is a graph without 3-cycles and 4-cycles, then the discrete cubical homology of G is trivial in dimension d, for all d\ge 2. We also construct a sequence { G_d } of graphs such that this homology is non-trivial in dimension d for d\ge 1. Finally, we show that the discrete cubical homology induced by certain coverings of G equals the ordinary singular homology of a 2-dimensional cell complex built from G, although in general it differs from the discrete cubical homology of the graph as a whole.

On the lattice of subracks of the rack of a finite group

In this paper we initiate the study of racks from the combined perspective of combinatorics and finite group theory. A rack R is a set with a self-distributive binary operation. We study the combinatorics of the partially ordered set {\cal R}(R) of all subracks of R with inclusion as the order relation. Groups G with the conjugation operation provide an important class of racks. For the case R = G we show that -> the order complex of {\cal R}(R) has the homotopy type of a sphere, -> the isomorphism type of {\cal R}(R) determines if G is abelian, nilpotent, supersolvable, solvable or simple, -> {\cal R}(R) is graded if and only if G is abelian, G = S_3, G = D_8 or G = Q_8. In addition, we provide some examples of subracks R of a group G for which {\cal R}(R) relates to well studied combinatorial structures. In particular, the examples show that the order complex of {\cal R}(R) for general R is more complicated than in the case R = G.

The poset of proper divisibility

We study the partially ordered set $P(a_1,\ldots, a_n)$ of all multidegrees $(b_1,\dots,b_n)$ of monomials $x_1^{b_1}\cdots x_n^{b_n}$ which properly divide $x_1^{a_1}\cdots x_n^{a_n}$. We prove that the order complex $Δ(P(a_1,\dots,a_n))$ of $P(a_1,\ldots a_n)$ is (non-pure) shellable, by showing that the order dual of $P(a_1,\ldots,a_n)$ is $\mathrm{CL}$-shellable. Along the way, we exhibit the poset $P(4,4)$ as a new example of a poset with $\mathrm{CL}$-shellable order dual that is not $\mathrm{CL}$-shellable itself. For $n = 2$ we provide the rank of all homology groups of the order complex $Δ\left( P(a_1,a_2) \right)$. Furthermore, we give a succinct formula for the Euler characteristic of $Δ\left( P(a_1,a_2) \right)$.

Asymptotic syzygies of Stanley-Reisner rings of iterated subdivisions

Inspired by recent results of Ein, Lazarsfeld, Erman and Zhou on the non-vanishing of Betti numbers of high Veronese subrings, we describe the behaviour of the Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with iterated barycentric or edgewise subdivisions of a given simplicial complex. Our results show that for a simplicial complex $Δ$ of dimension $d-1$ and for $1\leq j\leq d-1$ the number of $0$'s the j-th linear strand of the minimal free resolution of the r-th barycentric or edgewise subdivision is bounded above only in terms of $d$ and $j$ (and independently of $r$).

On the ideal of orthogonal representations of a graph in $\mathbb{R}^2$

In this paper, we study orthogonal representations of simple graphs $G$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ from an algebraic perspective in case $d = 2$. Orthogonal representations of graphs, introduced by Lovász, are maps from the vertex set to $\mathbb{R}^d$ where non-adjacent vertices are sent to orthogonal vectors. We exhibit algebraic properties of the ideal generated by the equations expressing this condition and deduce geometric properties of the variety of orthogonal embeddings for $d=2$ and $\mathbb{R}$ replaced by an arbitrary field. In particular, we classify when the ideal is radical and provide a reduced primary decomposition if $\sqrt{-1} \not\in K$. This leads to a description of the variety of orthogonal embeddings as a union of varieties defined by prime ideals. In particular, this applies to the motivating case $K = \mathbb{R}$.

The Buchberger resolution

We define the Buchberger resolution, which is a graded free resolution of a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring. Its construction uses a generalization of the Buchberger graph and encodes much of the combinatorics of the Buchberger algorithm. The Buchberger resolution is a cellular resolution that coincides with the Scarf resolution for generic monomial ideals, which is the case when it is minimal. The simplicial complex underlying the Buchberger resolution is of interest for its own sake and its combinatorics is not fully understood. We close with a conjecture on the clique complex of the Buchberger graph.

Discrete Morse theory for moment-angle complexes of pairs (D^n,S^{n-1})

For a finite simplicial complex K and a CW-pair (X,A), there is an associated CW-complex Z_K(X,A), known as a polyhedral product. We apply discrete Morse theory to a particular CW-structure on the n-sphere moment-angle complexes Z_K(D^{n}, S^{n-1}). For the class of simplicial complexes with vertex-decomposable duals, we show that the associated n-sphere moment-angle complexes have the homotopy type of wedges of spheres. As a corollary we show that a sufficiently high suspension of any restriction of a simplicial complex with vertex-decomposable dual is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres.

On partial barycentric subdivision

The lth partial barycentric subdivision is defined for a (d-1)-dimensional simplicial complex Δand studied along with its combinatorial, geometric and algebraic aspects. We analyze the behavior of the f- and h-vector under the lth partial barycentric subdivision extending previous work of Brenti and Welker on the standard barycentric subdivision -- the case l = 1. We discuss and provide properties of the transformation matrices sending the f- and h-vector of Δto the f- and h-vector of its lth partial barycentric subdivision. We conclude with open problems.

The Golod property for products and high symbolic powers of monomial ideals

We show that for any two proper monomial ideals I and J in the polynomial ring S = k[x_1, ..., x_n] the ring S/IJ is Golod. We also show that if I is squarefree then for large enough k the quotient S/I^{(k)} of S by the kth symbolic power of I is Golod. As an application we prove that the multiplication on the cohomology algebra of some classes of moment-angle complexes is trivial.

A deformation of the Orlik-Solomon algebra

A deformation of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a matroid M is defined as a quotient of the free associative algebra over a commutative ring R with 1. It is shown that the given generators form a Groebner basis and that after suitable homogenization the deformation and the Orlik-Solomon have the same Hilbert series as R-algebras. For supersolvable matroids, equivalently fiber type arrangements, there is a quadratic Groebner basis and hence the algebra is Koszul

Buchsbaum* complexes

A class of simplicial complexes, which we call Buchsbaum* over a field, is introduced. Buchsbaum* complexes generalize triangulations of orientable homology manifolds as well as doubly Cohen-Macaulay complexes. By definition, the Buchsbaum* property depends only on the geometric realization and the field. Characterizations in terms of simplicial and local cohomology are given. It is proved that Buchsbaum* complexes are doubly Buchsbaum. Enumerative and graph theoretic properties of Buchsbaum* complexes are investigated. It is shown that various constructions, among them one which generalizes convex ear decompositions, yield Buchsbaum* simplicial complexes.

Commutative Algebra of Statistical Ranking

A model for statistical ranking is a family of probability distributions whose states are orderings of a fixed finite set of items. We represent the orderings as maximal chains in a graded poset. The most widely used ranking models are parameterized by rational function in the model parameters, so they define algebraic varieties. We study these varieties from the perspective of combinatorial commutative algebra. One of our models, the Plackett-Luce model, is non-toric. Five others are toric: the Birkhoff model, the ascending model, the Csiszar model, the inversion model, and the Bradley-Terry model. For these models we examine the toric algebra, its lattice polytope, and its Markov basis.

Enumerative $g$-theorems for the Veronese construction for formal power series and graded algebras

Let $(a_n)_{n \geq 0}$ be a sequence of integers such that its generating series satisfies $\sum_{n \geq 0} a_nt^n = \frac{h(t)}{(1-t)^d}$ for some polynomial $h(t)$. For any $r \geq 1$ we study the coefficient sequence of the numerator polynomial $h_0(a^{<r >}) +...+ h_{λ'}(a^{<r >}) t^{λ'}$ of the $r$\textsuperscript{th} Veronese series $a^{<r >}(t) = \sum_{n \geq 0} a_{nr} t^n$. Under mild hypothesis we show that the vector of successive differences of this sequence up to the $\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor$\textsuperscript{th} entry is the $f$-vector of a simplicial complex for large $r$. In particular, the sequence satisfies the consequences of the unimodality part of the $g$-conjecture. We give applications of the main result to Hilbert series of Veronese algebras of standard graded algebras and the $f$-vectors of edgewise subdivisions of simplicial complexes.

Homology of powers of ideals: Artin--Rees numbers of syzygies and the Golod property

For an ideal I in a regular local ring (R,m)$ with residue class field K = R/m or a standard graded K-algebra R we show that for k >> 0 --> the Artin--Rees number of the syzygy modules of I^k as submodules of the free modules from a free resolution is constant, and thereby present the Artin-Rees number as a proper replacement of regularity in the local situation, --> the ring R/I^k is Golod, its Poincer{é}-Betti series is rational and the Betti numbers of the free resolution of K over R/I^k are polynomials in k of a specific degree. The first result is an extension of work of Kodiyalam and Cutkosky, Herzog & Trung on the regularity of I^k for k >> 0 from the graded situation to the local situation. The polynomiality consequence of the second result is an analog of work by Kodiyalam on the behavior of Betti numbers of the minimal free resolution of R/I^k over R.

Spectra of Symmetrized Shuffling Operators

(Abridged abstract) For a finite real reflection group W and a W-orbit O of flats in its reflection arrangement---or equivalently a conjugacy class of its parabolic subgroups---we introduce a statistic on elements of W. We then study the operator of right-multiplication within the group algebra of W by the element whose coefficients are given by this statistic. We reinterpret the operators geometrically in terms of the arrangement of reflecting hyperplanes for W. We show that they are self-adjoint and positive semidefinite. via two explicit factorizations into a symmetrized form A^t A. In one such factorization, A is a generalization of the projection of a simplex onto the linear ordering polytope. In the other factorization, A is the transition matrix for one of the well-studied Bidigare-Hanlon-Rockmore random walks on the chambers of an arrangement. We study the family of operators in which O is the conjugacy classes of Young subgroups of type (k,1^{n-k}). A special case within this family is the operator corresponding to random-to-random shuffling. We show in a purely enumerative fashion that these operators pairwise commute. We furthermore conjecture that they have integer spectrum, generalizing a conjecture of Uyemura-Reyes for the case k=n-1. We use representation theory to show that if O is a conjugacy class of rank one parabolics in W, the corresponding operator has integer spectrum. Our proof makes use of an (apparently) new family of twisted Gelfand pairs for W. We also study the family of operators in which O is the conjugacy classes of Young subgroups of type (2^k,1^{n-2k}). Here the construction of a Gelfand model for the symmetric group shows that these operators pairwise commute and that they have integer spectrum. For the symmetric group, we conjecture that apart from the two commuting families above, no other pair of operators of this form commutes.

Geometric Combinatorics of Weyl Groupoids

We extend properties of the weak order on finite Coxeter groups to Weyl groupoids admitting a finite root system. In particular, we determine the topological structure of intervals with respect to weak order, and show that the set of morphisms with fixed target object forms an ortho-complemented meet semilattice. We define the Coxeter complex of a Weyl groupoid with finite root system and show that it coincides with the triangulation of a sphere cut out by a simplicial hyperplane arrangement. As a consequence, one obtains an algebraic interpretation of many hyperplane arrangements that are not reflection arrangements.

Resolution of the residue class field via algebraic discrete Morse theory

Forman's Discrete Morse theory is studied from an algebraic viewpoint. Analogous to independent work of Emil Skoeldberg we show that this theory can be extended to chain complexes of free modules over a ring. We provide three applications of this theory: We construct new resolutions of the residue class field $k$ over $A$, where $A$ is the quotient of a (i) commutative polynomial ring or (ii) non-commutaitve polynomial ring by a (twosided) ideal and (iii) we construct a new resolution of $A$ as an $A \otimes A^{op}$-module in the situation (ii). In either case we prove minimality of the resolution for certain classes of algebras $A$.

Complexes of not $i$-connected graphs

Complexes of (not) connected graphs, hypergraphs and their homology appear in the construction of knot invariants given by V. Vassiliev. In this paper we study the complexes of not $i$-connected $k$-hypergraphs on $n$ vertices. We show that the complex of not $2$-connected graphs has the homotopy type of a wedge of $(n-2)!$ spheres of dimension $2n-5$. This answers one of the questions raised by Vassiliev in connection with knot invariants. For this case the $S_n$-action on the homology of the complex is also determined. For complexes of not $2$-connected $k$-hypergraphs we provide a formula for the generating function of the Euler characteristic, and we introduce certain lattices of graphs that encode their topology. We also present partial results for some other cases. In particular, we show that the complex of not $(n-2)$-connected graphs is Alexander dual to the complex of partial matchings of the complete graph. For not $(n-3)$-connected graphs we provide a formula for the generating function of the Euler characteristic.

Combinatorics and topology of stratifications of the space of monic polynomials with real coefficients

We study the stratification of the space of monic polynomials with real coefficients according to the number and multiplicities of real zeros. In the first part, for each of these strata we provide a purely combinatorial chain complex calculating (co)homology of its one-point compactification and describe the homotopy type by order complexes of a class of posets of compositions. In the second part, we determine the homotopy type of the one-point compactification of the space of monic polynomials of fixed degree which have only real roots (i.e., hyperbolic polynomials) and at least one root is of multiplicity $k$. More generally, we describe the homotopy type of the one-point compactification of strata in the boundary of the set of hyperbolic polynomials, that are defined via certain restrictions on root multiplicities, by order complexes of posets of compositions. In general, the methods are combinatorial and the topological problems are mostly reduced to the study of partially ordered sets.
