Generalized binomial edge ideals are Cartwright-Sturmfels

Binomial edge ideals associated to a simple graph G were introduced by Herzog and collaborators and, independently, by Ohtani. They became an ``instant classic" in combinatorial commutative algebra with more than 100 papers devoted to their investigation over the past 15 years. They exhibit many striking properties, including being radical and, moreover, Cartwright-Sturmfels. Using the fact that binomial edge ideals can be seen as ideals of 2-minors of a matrix of variables with two rows, generalized binomial edge ideals of 2-minors of matrices of m rows were introduced by Rauh and proved to be radical. The goal of this paper is to prove that generalized binomial edge ideals are Cartwright-Sturmfels. On the way we provide results on ideal constructions preserving the Cartwright-Sturmfels property. We also give examples and counterexamples to the Cartwright-Sturmfels property for higher minors.

A note on the $v$-invariant

Let $R$ be a finitely generated $\mathbb N$-graded algebra domain over a Noetherian ring and let $I$ be a homogeneous ideal of $R$. Given $P\in Ass(R/I)$ one defines the $v$-invariant $v_P(I)$ of $I$ at $P$ as the least $c\in \mathbb N$ such that $P=I:f$ for some $f\in R_c$. A classical result of Brodmann asserts that $Ass(R/I^n)$ is constant for large $n$. So it makes sense to consider a prime ideal $P\in Ass(R/I^n)$ for all the large $n$ and investigate how $v_P(I^n)$ depends on $n$. We prove that $v_P(I^n)$ is eventually a linear function of $n$. When $R$ is the polynomial ring over a field this statement has been proved independently also by Ficarra and Sgroi in a recent preprint.

Radical support for multigraded ideals

Can one tell if an ideal is radical just by looking at the degrees of the generators? In general, this is hopeless. However, there are special collections of degrees in multigraded polynomial rings, with the property that any multigraded ideal generated by elements of those degrees is radical. We call such a collection of degrees a radical support. In this paper, we give a combinatorial characterization of radical supports. Our characterization is in terms of properties of cycles in an associated labelled graph. We also show that the notion of radical support is closely related to that of Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals. In fact, any ideal generated by multigraded generators whose multidegrees form a radical support is a Cartwright-Sturmfels ideal. Conversely, a collection of degrees such that any multigraded ideal generated by elements of those degrees is Cartwright-Sturmfels is a radical support.

Resolution of ideals associated to subspace arrangements

Let $I_1,\dots,I_n$ be ideals generated by linear forms in a polynomial ring over an infinite field and let $J = I_1 \cdots I_n$. We describe a minimal free resolution of $J$ and show that it is supported on a polymatroid obtained from the underlying representable polymatroid by means of the so-called Dilworth truncation. Formulas for the projective dimension and Betti numbers are given in terms of the polymatroid as well as a characterization of the associated primes. Along the way we show that $J$ has linear quotients. In fact, we do this for a large class of ideals $J_P$, where $P$ is a certain poset ideal associated to the underlying subspace arrangement.

Linear resolutions of powers and products

The goal of this paper is to present examples of families of homogeneous ideals in the polynomial ring over a field that satisfy the following condition: every product of ideals of the family has a linear free resolution. As we will see, this condition is strongly correlated to good primary decompositions of the products and good homological and arithmetical properties of the associated multi-Rees algebras. The following families will be discussed in detail: polymatroidal ideals, ideals generated by linear forms and Borel fixed ideals of maximal minors. The main tools are Gröbner bases and Sagbi deformation.

Multigraded generic initial ideals of determinantal ideals

Let I be either the ideal of maximal minors or the ideal of 2-minors of a row graded or column graded matrix of linear forms L. In two previous papers we showed that I is a Cartwright-Sturmfels ideal, that is, the multigraded generic initial ideal gin(I) of I is radical (and essentially independent of the term order chosen). In this paper we describe generators and prime decomposition of gin(I) in terms of data related to the linear dependences among the row or columns of the submatrices of L. In the case of 2-minors we also give a closed formula for its multigraded Hilbert series.

Products of Borel fixed ideals of maximal minors

We study a large family of products of Borel fixed ideals of maximal minors. We compute their initial ideals and primary decompositions, and show that they have linear free resolutions. The main tools are an extension of straightening law and a very surprising primary decomposition formula. We study also the homological properties of associated multi-Rees algebra which are shown to be Cohen-Macaulay, Koszul and defined by a Gröbner basis of quadrics.

Universal Groebner bases and Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals

We describe the universal Groebner basis of the ideal of maximal minors and the ideal of $2$-minors of a multigraded matrix of linear forms. Our results imply that the ideals are radical and provide bounds on the regularity. In particular, the ideals of maximal minors have linear resolutions. Our main theoretical contribution consists of introducing two new classes of ideals named after Cartwright and Sturmfels, and proving that they are closed under multigraded hyperplane sections. The gins of the ideals that we study enjoy special properties.

Absolutely Koszul algebras and the Backelin-Roos property

We study absolutely Koszul algebras, Koszul algebras with the Backelin-Roos property and their behavior under standard algebraic operations. In particular, we identify some Veronese subrings of polynomial rings that have the Backelin-Roos property and conjecture that the list is indeed complete. Among other things, we prove that every universally Koszul ring defined by monomials has the Backelin-Roos property.

Asymptotic syzygies of Stanley-Reisner rings of iterated subdivisions

Inspired by recent results of Ein, Lazarsfeld, Erman and Zhou on the non-vanishing of Betti numbers of high Veronese subrings, we describe the behaviour of the Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with iterated barycentric or edgewise subdivisions of a given simplicial complex. Our results show that for a simplicial complex $Δ$ of dimension $d-1$ and for $1\leq j\leq d-1$ the number of $0$'s the j-th linear strand of the minimal free resolution of the r-th barycentric or edgewise subdivision is bounded above only in terms of $d$ and $j$ (and independently of $r$).

An algebraic characterization of injectivity in phase retrieval

A complex frame is a collection of vectors that span $\mathbb{C}^M$ and define measurements, called intensity measurements, on vectors in $\mathbb{C}^M$. In purely mathematical terms, the problem of phase retrieval is to recover a complex vector from its intensity measurements, namely the modulus of its inner product with these frame vectors. We show that any vector is uniquely determined (up to a global phase factor) from $4M-4$ generic measurements. To prove this, we identify the set of frames defining non-injective measurements with the projection of a real variety and bound its dimension.

Ideals generated by superstandard tableaux

We investigate products J of ideals of "row initial" minors in the polynomial ring K[X] defined by a generic m-by-n matrix. Such ideals are shown to be generated by a certain set of standard bitableaux that we call superstandard. These bitableaux form a Gröbner basis of J, and J has a linear minimal free resolution. These results are used to derive a new generating set for the Grothendieck group of finitely generated (T_m x GL_n(K))-equivariant modules over K[X]. We employ the Knuth--Robinson--Schensted correspondence and a toric deformation of the multi-Rees algebra that parameterizes the ideals J.

Koszul algebras and their syzygies

These are the notes of the lectures of the author at the 2013 CIME/CIRM summer school on Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry. Koszul algebras, introduced by Priddy, are positively graded K-algebras R whose residue field K has a linear free resolution as an R-module. The first part of the notes is devoted to the introduction of Koszul algebras and their characterization in terms of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. In the second part we discuss recernt results on the syzygies of Koszul algebras. Finally in the last part we discuss the Koszul property of Veronese algebras and of algebras associated with collections of hyperspaces.

Relations between the minors of a generic matrix

It is well-known that the Plücker relations generate the ideal of relations of the maximal minors of a generic matrix. In this paper we discuss the relations between minors of a (non-maximal) fixed size. We will exhibit minimal relations in degrees 2 (non-Plücker in general) and 3, and give some evidence for our conjecture that we have found the generating system of the ideal of relations. The approach is through the representation theory of the general linear group.

Universal Groebner bases for maximal minors

A set of polynomials G in a polynomial ring S over a field is said to be a universal Groebner basis, if G is a Groebner basis with respect to every term order on S. Twenty years ago Bernstein, Sturmfels, and Zelevinsky proved that the set of the maximal minors of a matrix X of variables is a universal Groebner basis. Boocher recently proved that any initial ideal of the ideal of maximal minors of X has a linear resolution. In this paper we give a quick proof of the results mentioned above. Our proof is based on a specialization argument. Then we show that similar statements hold in a more general setting, for matrices of linear forms satisfying certain homogeneity conditions. More precisely, we show that the set of maximal minors of a matrix L of linear forms is a universal Groebner basis for the ideal I that it generates, provided that L is column-graded. Under the same assumption we show that every initial ideal of I has a linear resolution. Furthermore, the projective dimension of I and of its initial ideals is n-m, unless I=0 or a column of L is identically 0. Here L is a matrix of size m times n, and m is smaller than or equal to n. If instead L is row-graded, then we prove that I has a universal Groebner basis of elements of degree m and that every initial ideal of I has a linear resolution, provided that I has the expected codimension. The proofs are based on a rigidity property of radical Borel fixed ideals in a multigraded setting: We prove that if two Borel fixed ideals I and J have the same multigraded Hilbert series and I is radical, then I = J. We also discuss some of the consequences of this rigidity property.

Koszul property of projections of the Veronese cubic surface

Let V be the Veronese cubic surface in P^9. We classify the projections of V to P^8 whose coordinate rings are Koszul. In particular we obtain a purely theoretical proof of the Koszulness of the pinched Veronese, a result obtained originally by Caviglia using filtrations, deformations and computer assisted computations. To this purpose we extend, to certain complete intersections, results of Conca, Herzog, Trung and Valla concerning homological properties of diagonal algebras.

New free divisors from old

We present several methods to construct or identify families of free divisors such as those annihilated by many Euler vector fields, including binomial free divisors, or divisors with triangular discriminant matrix. We show how to create families of quasihomogeneous free divisors through the chain rule or by extending them into the tangent bundle. We also discuss whether general divisors can be extended to free ones by adding components and show that adding a normal crossing divisor to a smooth one will not succeed.

Regularity bounds for Koszul cycles

We study the module of Koszul cycles $Z_t(I,M)$ of a homogeneous ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring $S$ with respect to a graded module $M$. Under mild assumptions on the base field we prove that the regularity of $Z_t(I,S)$ is a subadditive function of the homological position t when I is 0-dimensional. For Borel-fixed ideals $I$ and $J$ we prove that the regularity of $Z_t(I,S/J)$ is bounded above by $t(1+\reg I)+\reg S/J$.

Generic initial ideals of points and curves

Let I be the defining ideal of a smooth irreducible complete intersection space curve C with defining equations of degrees a and b. We use the partial elimination ideals introduced by Mark Green to show that the lexicographic generic initial ideal of I has Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity 1+ab(a-1)(b-1)/2 with the exception of the case a=b=2, where the regularity is 4. Note that ab(a-1)(b-1)/2 is exactly the number of singular points of a general projection of C to the plane. Additionally, we show that for any term ordering tau, the generic initial ideal of a generic set of points in P^r is a tau-segment ideal.
