Reconfigurable topological states in arrays of bianisotropic particles

Topological photonics promotes a novel approach to resilient light manipulation by exploiting spatio-temporal symmetries of the system and dual symmetry of electromagnetic field. Various prospective device applications pose the need to flexibly control robust field localization associated with topological modes. Here we design a topological array of resonant dielectric meta-atoms with bianisotropic response induced by a spatial symmetry reduction. Mutual orientation of the designed meta-atoms encodes a staggered bianisotropy pattern capable of trapping topological states in a one-dimensional array containing a small number of particles. We show that the topological interface state can be tailored by the rotation of coaxial bianisotropic particles arranged in an equidistant lattice. Our experimental implementation based on ceramic horseshoe-shaped disks demonstrates remarkable reconfigurability of electromagnetic topological states.

Loss compensation symmetry of unequally sized dielectric cylinders with gain and loss

A rigorous analytical approach is applied to solve the eigenvalue problem for a pair of circular dielectric cylinders with complex permittivity. This approach relies on field expansion in terms of two sets of orthogonal azimuthal modes, which are coupled due to finite distance between the cylinders. We investigate the ability of a gain-dielectric cylinder operated in the fundamental TM mode to compensate material losses of a larger cylinder operated in the higher-order radial TM mode. To achieve such a loss compensation phenomenon, a simple design strategy is developed. It is shown that this phenomenon can be achieved for a certain distance between the cylinders, which is associated with the exceptional point of the system. For smaller distances, the adverse impact of high-order azimuthal (hybrid) modes are found to be essential. The results obtained are validated against full-wave simulations.

Magnetic dipole ordering in resonant dielectric metasurfaces

Artificial magnetism at optical frequencies can be realized in metamaterials composed of periodic arrays of subwavelength elements, also called "meta-atoms". Optically-induced magnetic moments can be arranged in both unstaggered structures, naturally associated with ferromagnetic (FM) order, or staggered structures, linked correspondingly to antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. Here we demonstrate that such magnetic dipole orders of the lattices of meta-atoms can appear in low-symmetry Mie-resonant metasurfaces where each asymmetric dielectric (non-magnetic) meta-atom supports a localized trapped mode. We reveal that these all-dielectric resonant metasurfaces possess not only strong optical magnetic response but also they demonstrate a significant polarization rotation of the propagating electromagnetic waves at both FM and AFM resonances. We confirm these findings experimentally by measuring directly the spectral characteristics of different modes excited in all-dielectric metasurfaces, and mapping near-field patterns of the electromagnetic fields at the microwave frequencies.

Symmetry analysis of trimer-based all-dielectric metasurfaces with toroidal dipole modes

Herein, we discuss the conditions for excitation of symmetry-protected toroidal dipole modes in all-dielectric metasurfaces composed of trimer or twin-trimer clusters of dielectric disks. Such metasurfaces permit enhanced light-matter interaction due to spatially confined light in resonant systems with a high-quality factor. To describe characteristics of toroidal modes existing in the clusters, we use the magnetic dipole moments approximation, group-theoretical methods, group representation theory, symmetry-adapted linear combination method, and circuit theory. To validate the obtained theoretical results, we fulfill both full-wave numerical simulations and microwave experiments. In particular, we have shown that the toroidal dipole mode appears as a quasi-dark state of the trimer. It can be excited in the metasurface by the field of a linearly polarized wave, providing the symmetry of the trimer is properly reduced. In the metasurface, the properties of the toroidal dipole mode are determined primarily by the parameters of a single trimer and are not a consequence of the periodicity of the array. The coupling of the toroidal dipole modes in the twin-trimers can appear in both bonding and anti-bonding fashion resulting in different orders of the net toroidal dipole moment. Due to the unique field configuration of these modes, the proposed metasurfaces can be considered as a platform for efficient light-matter interaction for enhanced absorption, nonlinear switching, and sensing.

Homogeneous enhancement of electric near-field in all-dielectric metasurfaces composed of cluster-based unit cells

In order to construct a dielectric analog of spaser, we study theoretically and experimentally several configurations of cluster-based unit cells for an all-dielectric metasurface characterized by resonant conditions of the trapped mode excitation. Excitation of the trapped mode is realized by either specific displacement of particles in the cluster, or perturbation of the equidistantly spaced particles by off-centered round holes or coaxial-sector notches. It turns out that the latter approach is more advantageous for enhancement of electric near-field with homogeneous distribution in-plane of the structure and its strong localization outside the high-refractive-index dielectric particles. This feature opens prospects for realization of highly desirable subwavelength flat lasing structures based on strong near-field interaction with substances exhibiting pronounced nonlinear characteristics and properties of gain media.

Superscattering from subwavelength corrugated cylinders

Wave scattering from a cylinder with a tensor impedance surface is investigated based on the Lorentz-Mie theory. A practical example of such a cylinder is a subwavelength metallic rod with helical dielectric-filled corrugations. The investigation is performed with the aim to maximize scattering cross-section by tailoring the surface impedance of cylindrical scatterers. For the normally incident TEz and TMz waves the required surface impedance of a subwavelength cylinder can be produced by longitudinal (axial) and transverse (circumferential) corrugations, respectively. It is shown that such corrugations induce superscattering at multiple frequencies, which can be widely tuned with either or both the size and permittivity of dielectric-filled corrugations. In the microwave band, this effect is demonstrated to be robust to material losses and is validated against the full-wave simulations and experiment. For the TEz waves the enhanced scattering from the cylinder is found to have a broad frequency bandwidth, provided that the relative permittivity of corrugations is low or equal unity. In the latter case, the corrugated cylinder acts as an all-metal superscatterer. For such cylinders the near-field measurements are implemented and provide the first experimental evidence of the superscattering phenomenon for all-metal objects. In addition to multifrequency superscattering, the dielectric-filled corrugations are shown to provide multifrequency cloaking of the cylinder under the incidence of the TMz waves. Simultaneous superscattering and cloaking at multiple frequencies distinguishes corrugated cylinders from other known practicable scatterers for potential applications in antenna designing, sensing, and energy harvesting.

Dispersion regions overlapping for bulk and surface polaritons in a magnetic-semiconductor superlattice

Extraordinary dispersion features of both bulk and surface polaritons in a finely-stratified magnetic-semiconductor structure which is under an action of an external static magnetic field in the Voigt geometry are discussed in this letter. It is shown that the conditions for total overlapping dispersion regions of simultaneous existence of bulk and surface polaritons can be reached providing a conscious choice of the constitutive parameters and material fractions for both magnetic and semiconductor subsystems.

Polaritons dispersion in a composite ferrite-semiconductor structure near gyrotropic-nihility state

In the context of polaritons in a ferrite-semiconductor structure which is influenced by an external static magnetic field, the gyrotropic-nihility can be identified from the dispersion equation related to bulk polaritons as a particular extreme state, at which the longitudinal component of the corresponding constitutive tensor and bulk constant simultaneously acquire zero. Near the frequency of the gyrotropic-nihility state, the conditions of branches merging of bulk polaritons, as well as an anomalous dispersion of bulk and surface polaritons are found and discussed.

Dispersion blue-shift in an aperiodic Bragg reflection waveguide

A particular feature of an aperiodic design of cladding of Bragg reflection waveguides to demonstrate a dispersion blue-shift is elucidated. It is made on the basis of a comparative study of dispersion characteristics of both periodic and aperiodic configurations of Bragg mirrors in the waveguide system, wherein for the aperiodic configuration three procedures for layers alternating, namely Fibonacci, Thue-Morse and Kolakoski substitutional rules are considered. It was found out that, in a Bragg reflection waveguide with any considered aperiodic cladding, dispersion curves of guided modes appear to be shifted to shorter wavelengths compared to the periodic configuration regardless of the modes polarization.

Gaussian Beam Transmission through a Gyrotropic-Nihility Finely-Stratified Structure

The three-dimensional Gaussian beam transmission through a ferrite-semiconductor finely-stratified structure being under an action of an external static magnetic field in the Faraday geometry is considered. The beam field is represented by an angular continuous spectrum of plane waves. In the long-wavelength limit, the studied structure is described as a gyroelectromagnetic medium defined by the effective permittivity and effective permeability tensors. The investigations are carried out in the frequency band where the real parts of the on-diagonal elements of both effective permittivity and effective permeability tensors are close to zero while the off-diagonal ones are non-zero. In this frequency band the studied structure is referred to a gyrotropic-nihility medium. It is found out that a Gaussian beam keeps its parameters unchanged (beam width and shape) when passing through the layer of such a medium except of a portion of the absorbed energy.

Gyrotropic-nihility state in a composite ferrite-semiconductor structure

Characteristics of the gyrotropic-nihility state are studied in a finely-stratified ferrite-semiconductor structure, which is under an action of an external static magnetic field. Investigations are carried out with the assistance of the effective medium theory, according to which the studied structure is approximated as a uniform gyroelectromagnetic medium. The theory of the gyrotropic-nihility state is developed in terms of the eigenwaves propagation in such gyroelectromagnetic medium. The frequency and angular dependencies of the transmittance, reflectance and absorption coefficient are presented. It turns out that in the frequency band around the frequency of gyrotropic-nihility state the studied structure appears to be matched to free space with both the refractive index and the wave impedance which results in its high transmittance almost in the entire range of angles of the electromagnetic wave incidence.

Nonlinear interaction of two trapped-mode resonances in a bilayer fish-scale metamaterial

We report on a bistable light transmission through a bilayer "fish-scale" (meander-line) metamaterial. It is demonstrated that an all-optical switching may be achieved nearly the frequency of the high-quality-factor Fano-shaped trapped-mode resonance excitation. The nonlinear interaction of two closely spaced trapped-mode resonances in the bilayer structure composed with a Kerr-type nonlinear dielectric slab is analyzed in both frequency and time domains. It is demonstrated that these two resonances react differently on the applied intense light which leads to destination of a multistable transmission.

Two-oscillator model of trapped-modes interaction in a nonlinear bilayer fish-scale metamaterial

We discuss the similarity between the nature of resonant oscillations in two nonlinear systems, namely, a chain of coupled Duffing oscillators and a bilayer fish-scale metamaterial. In such systems two different resonant states arise which differ in their spectral lines. The spectral line of the first resonant state has a Lorentzian form, while the second one has a Fano form. This difference leads to a specific nonlinear response of the systems which manifests itself in appearance of closed loops in spectral lines and bending and overlapping of resonant curves. Conditions of achieving bistability and multistability are found out.

Asymmetric bistable reflection and polarization switching in a magnetic nonlinear multilayer structure

Optical properties of a one-dimensional photonic structure consisting of Kerr-type nonlinear and magnetic layers under the action of an external static magnetic field in the Faraday geometry are investigated. The structure is a periodic arrangement of alternating nonlinear and magnetic layers (a one-dimensional photonic crystal) with one of the layers doubled to create a defect where periodicity is violated. Strong enhancement of nonreciprocity is observed at the frequencies of the defect modes, where linearly polarized light incident from one side of the structure undergoes 90 deg polarization rotation upon reflection, while light reflected from the other side has its polarization unchanged. Using the nonlinear transfer matrix calculations in the frequency domain, it is demonstrated that defect resonances in the nonlinear reflection spectra undergo bending, resulting in polarization bistability of reflected light. This bistability is shown to result in abrupt switching between linear polarization of the output reflected light when the input intensity is varied. This switching is confirmed in finite-difference time-domain simulations, and its hysteresis character is established.

Resonant features of planar Faraday metamaterial with high structural symmetry

The transmission of electromagnetic wave through the planar chiral structure, loaded with the gyrotropic medium on the longitudinal magnetic field is studied. The frequency dependence of the metamaterial resonance and the angle of rotation of the polarization plane are obtained. We define both theoretically and experimentally the range of frequencies and magnetic fields, where the angle of polarization plane rotation for the metamaterial is essentially higher than for a single ferrite slab.

Optical bistability involving planar metamaterial with broken structural symmetry

We report on a bistable light transmission through a planar metamaterial composed of a metal pattern of weakly asymmetric elements placed on a nonlinear substrate. Such structure bears the Fano-like sharp resonance response of a trapped-mode excitation. The feedback required for bistability is provided by the coupling between the strong antiphased trapped-mode-resonance currents excited on the metal elements and the intensity of inner field in the nonlinear substrate.

preprint2011arXiv

All-optical switching in metamaterial with high structural symmetry

We argue the possibility of realization of a polarization insensitive all-optical switching in a planar metamaterial composed of a 4-fold periodic array of two concentric metal rings placed on a substrate of nonlinear material. It is demonstrated that a switching may be achieved between essentially different values of transmission near the resonant frequency of the high-quality-factor Fano-shape trapped-mode excitation.

Polarization switching and nonreciprocity in symmetric and asymmetric magnetophotonic multilayers with nonlinear defect

A one-dimensional magnetophotonic crystal with a nonlinear defect placed either symmetrically or asymmetrically inside the structure is considered. Simultaneous effects of time-reversal nonreciprocity and nonlinear spatial asymmetry in the structure are studied. Bistable response is demonstrated in a such system, accompanied by abrupt polarization switching between two circular or elliptical polarizations for transmitted and reflected waves. The effect is explained in terms of field localization at defect-mode spectral resonances and can be used in the design of thin-film optical isolators and polarization transformation devices.

A peculiarity of localized mode transfiguration of a Cantor-like chiral multilayer

A fractal-like (Cantor-like) stratified structure of chiral and convenient isotropic layers is considered. Peculiarities of the wave localization, self-similarity, scalability and sequential splitting in the reflected field of both the co-polarized and cross-polarized components are studied. The appearing of the additional peak multiplets in stopbands is revealed, and a correlation of their properties with chirality parameter is established.

Polarization transformations by a magneto-photonic layered structure in vicinity of ferromagnetic resonance

The polarization properties of a magnetophotonic crystal at the frequencies located in the vicinity of ferromagnetic resonance are studied. The investigations are curried out taking into consideration the fact that the magnitude of material losses in ferrite layers at this frequency band is significant. The method is based on obtaining a system of ordinary differential equations and further analyzing the stability of solutions of this system. The electromagnetic properties of the structure under study are found out via the analysis of the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix of the structure period. On this basis the boundaries of the stopbands and passbands of the eigenwaves are determined. The frequency and angular dependences of the reflection and transmission coefficients are given. The angle of the rotation of the polarization plane and the ellipticity of the reflected and transmitted fields are obtained.

Polarization properties of a symmetrical and asymmetrical nonreciprocal chiral photonic bandgap structure with defect

The polarization properties of perfectly periodical and defective one-dimensional photonic bandgap structures with nonreciprocal chiral (bi-isotropic) layers are studied. The method of solution is based on the 2x2-block-representation transfer-matrix formulation. Numerical simulations are carried out for different type of structures (symmetrical or asymmetrical) in order to reveal the dependence of the reflection and transmission coefficients on frequency, chirality, nonreciprocity parameters, and the angle of wave incidence.
