Superscattering from subwavelength corrugated cylinders

Wave scattering from a cylinder with a tensor impedance surface is investigated based on the Lorentz-Mie theory. A practical example of such a cylinder is a subwavelength metallic rod with helical dielectric-filled corrugations. The investigation is performed with the aim to maximize scattering cross-section by tailoring the surface impedance of cylindrical scatterers. For the normally incident TEz and TMz waves the required surface impedance of a subwavelength cylinder can be produced by longitudinal (axial) and transverse (circumferential) corrugations, respectively. It is shown that such corrugations induce superscattering at multiple frequencies, which can be widely tuned with either or both the size and permittivity of dielectric-filled corrugations. In the microwave band, this effect is demonstrated to be robust to material losses and is validated against the full-wave simulations and experiment. For the TEz waves the enhanced scattering from the cylinder is found to have a broad frequency bandwidth, provided that the relative permittivity of corrugations is low or equal unity. In the latter case, the corrugated cylinder acts as an all-metal superscatterer. For such cylinders the near-field measurements are implemented and provide the first experimental evidence of the superscattering phenomenon for all-metal objects. In addition to multifrequency superscattering, the dielectric-filled corrugations are shown to provide multifrequency cloaking of the cylinder under the incidence of the TMz waves. Simultaneous superscattering and cloaking at multiple frequencies distinguishes corrugated cylinders from other known practicable scatterers for potential applications in antenna designing, sensing, and energy harvesting.

Dispersion regions overlapping for bulk and surface polaritons in a magnetic-semiconductor superlattice

Extraordinary dispersion features of both bulk and surface polaritons in a finely-stratified magnetic-semiconductor structure which is under an action of an external static magnetic field in the Voigt geometry are discussed in this letter. It is shown that the conditions for total overlapping dispersion regions of simultaneous existence of bulk and surface polaritons can be reached providing a conscious choice of the constitutive parameters and material fractions for both magnetic and semiconductor subsystems.

Dispersion blue-shift in an aperiodic Bragg reflection waveguide

A particular feature of an aperiodic design of cladding of Bragg reflection waveguides to demonstrate a dispersion blue-shift is elucidated. It is made on the basis of a comparative study of dispersion characteristics of both periodic and aperiodic configurations of Bragg mirrors in the waveguide system, wherein for the aperiodic configuration three procedures for layers alternating, namely Fibonacci, Thue-Morse and Kolakoski substitutional rules are considered. It was found out that, in a Bragg reflection waveguide with any considered aperiodic cladding, dispersion curves of guided modes appear to be shifted to shorter wavelengths compared to the periodic configuration regardless of the modes polarization.

Gaussian Beam Transmission through a Gyrotropic-Nihility Finely-Stratified Structure

The three-dimensional Gaussian beam transmission through a ferrite-semiconductor finely-stratified structure being under an action of an external static magnetic field in the Faraday geometry is considered. The beam field is represented by an angular continuous spectrum of plane waves. In the long-wavelength limit, the studied structure is described as a gyroelectromagnetic medium defined by the effective permittivity and effective permeability tensors. The investigations are carried out in the frequency band where the real parts of the on-diagonal elements of both effective permittivity and effective permeability tensors are close to zero while the off-diagonal ones are non-zero. In this frequency band the studied structure is referred to a gyrotropic-nihility medium. It is found out that a Gaussian beam keeps its parameters unchanged (beam width and shape) when passing through the layer of such a medium except of a portion of the absorbed energy.
