CPA-lasing associated with the quasibound states in the continuum in asymmetric non-Hermitian structures

Non-Hermitian photonic systems with loss and gain attract much attention due to their exceptional abilities in molding the flow of light. Introducing asymmetry to the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system with perfectly balanced loss and gain, we reveal the mechanism of transition from the quasibound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC) to the simultaneous coherent perfect absorption (CPA) and lasing in a layered structure comprising epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) media. Two types of asymmetry (geometric and non-Hermitian) are analyzed with the scattering matrix technique. The effect of the CPA-lasing associated with the quasi-BIC is characterized with the unusual linear dependence of the quality factor on the inverse of asymmetry parameter. Moreover, the counter-intuitive loss-induced-lasing-like behavior is found at the CPA-lasing point under the non-Hermitian asymmetry. The reported features of non-Hermitian structures are perspective for sensing and lasing applications.

Loss compensation symmetry of unequally sized dielectric cylinders with gain and loss

A rigorous analytical approach is applied to solve the eigenvalue problem for a pair of circular dielectric cylinders with complex permittivity. This approach relies on field expansion in terms of two sets of orthogonal azimuthal modes, which are coupled due to finite distance between the cylinders. We investigate the ability of a gain-dielectric cylinder operated in the fundamental TM mode to compensate material losses of a larger cylinder operated in the higher-order radial TM mode. To achieve such a loss compensation phenomenon, a simple design strategy is developed. It is shown that this phenomenon can be achieved for a certain distance between the cylinders, which is associated with the exceptional point of the system. For smaller distances, the adverse impact of high-order azimuthal (hybrid) modes are found to be essential. The results obtained are validated against full-wave simulations.

Nonlinear interaction of two trapped-mode resonances in a bilayer fish-scale metamaterial

We report on a bistable light transmission through a bilayer "fish-scale" (meander-line) metamaterial. It is demonstrated that an all-optical switching may be achieved nearly the frequency of the high-quality-factor Fano-shaped trapped-mode resonance excitation. The nonlinear interaction of two closely spaced trapped-mode resonances in the bilayer structure composed with a Kerr-type nonlinear dielectric slab is analyzed in both frequency and time domains. It is demonstrated that these two resonances react differently on the applied intense light which leads to destination of a multistable transmission.

Asymmetric bistable reflection and polarization switching in a magnetic nonlinear multilayer structure

Optical properties of a one-dimensional photonic structure consisting of Kerr-type nonlinear and magnetic layers under the action of an external static magnetic field in the Faraday geometry are investigated. The structure is a periodic arrangement of alternating nonlinear and magnetic layers (a one-dimensional photonic crystal) with one of the layers doubled to create a defect where periodicity is violated. Strong enhancement of nonreciprocity is observed at the frequencies of the defect modes, where linearly polarized light incident from one side of the structure undergoes 90 deg polarization rotation upon reflection, while light reflected from the other side has its polarization unchanged. Using the nonlinear transfer matrix calculations in the frequency domain, it is demonstrated that defect resonances in the nonlinear reflection spectra undergo bending, resulting in polarization bistability of reflected light. This bistability is shown to result in abrupt switching between linear polarization of the output reflected light when the input intensity is varied. This switching is confirmed in finite-difference time-domain simulations, and its hysteresis character is established.

Asymmetric resonance in selective reflection: Explanation via Fano-like mechanism

Fano mechanism is the universal explanation of asymmetric resonance appearing in different systems. We report the evidence of Fano-like resonance in selective reflection from a resonant two-level medium. We draw an analogy with the asymmetric resonance previously obtained for the coupled oscillators. We also take into account the effects of dielectric background and local-field correction and connect our results with optical bistability.

Influence of absorbing dielectric background on bistable response of dense collection of two-level atoms

The stationary problem of light interaction with a dense collection of two-level atoms embedded in a dielectric is treated semiclassically. The effect of dielectric absorption on the phenomenon of intrinsic optical bistability is discussed in terms of the complex local-field enhancement factor. The calculations accounting propagation effects (nonlocal regime) show that even low dielectric absorption results in elimination of response instabilities.

Local field effect as a function of pulse duration

In this note we give semiclassical consideration of the role of pulse duration in observation of local field effects in the regime of optical switching. We show that the main parameter governing local field influence is the ratio of peak Rabi frequency corresponding to medium inversion and Lorentz frequency of the medium. To obtain significant local field effect, this parameter should be near unity that is valid only for long enough pulses. We also discuss the role of relaxation and pulse shape in this processes.
