Anomalous ferromagnetic behavior in the orthorhombic Li$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$

Monoclinic Li$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ has been proposed as a Kitaev spin liquid candidate and investigated intensively, whereas the properties of its polymorph, the orthorhombic phase, is less known. Here we report the magnetic properties of the orthorhombic Li$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ as revealed by dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and neutron diffraction measurements. Successive magnetic transitions at (115, 89 and 71) K were observed in the low field dc susceptibility measurements. The transitions below $T_N$ (= 115 K), are suppressed in higher applied fields. However, zero field, ac susceptibility measurements reveals distinct frequency independent transitions at about (114, 107, 97, 79 and 71) K. A long range magnetic ordered state was confirmed by specific heat, $μ$SR and neutron diffraction measurements, all indicating a single transition at about 115 K. The discrepancy between different measurements is attributed to possible stacking faults and/or local disorders of the ferromagnetic zig-zag chains, resulting in ferromagnetic boundaries within the overall antiferromagnetic matrix.

Crystal-field states and defect levels in candidate quantum spin ice Ce$_{2}$Hf$_{2}$O$_{7}$

We report the synthesis of powder and single-crystal samples of the cerium pyrohafnate and their characterization using neutron diffraction, thermogravimetry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We evaluate the amount of non-magnetic Ce$^{4+}$ defects and use this result to interpret the spectrum of crystal-electric field transitions observed using inelastic neutron scattering. The analysis of these single-ion transitions indicates the dipole-octupole nature of the ground state doublet and a significant degree of spin-lattice coupling. The single-ion properties calculated from the crystal-electric field parameters obtained spectroscopically are in good agreement with bulk magnetic susceptibility data down to about 1 K. Below this temperature, the behavior of the magnetic susceptibility indicates a correlated regime without showing any sign of magnetic long-range order or freezing down to 0.08 K. We conclude that Ce$_2$Hf$_2$O$_{7}$ is another candidate to investigate exotic correlated states of quantum matter such as the octupolar quantum spin ice recently argued to exist in the isostructural compounds Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ and Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$.

Cu-doping effects on the ferromagnetic semimetal CeAuGe

We present a study of Cu-substitution effects in 4f-Ce intermetallic compound CeAu1-xCuxGe, with potentially unusual electronic states, in the whole concentration range (x = 0.0 - 1.0). The parent CeAuGe compound, crystallizing in a non-centrosymmetric hexagonal structure, is a ferromagnetic semimetal with Curie temperature 10 K. Cu-doping on Au-site of CeAuGe, CeAu1-xCuxGe, changes the crystal structure from the non-centrosymmetric (P63mc) to centrosymmetric (P63/mmc) space group at the concentration x ~ 0.5, where the c-lattice constant has a maximum value. Magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements reveal that all Cu-doped compounds undergo magnetic phase transition near 10 K, with the maximum transition temperature of 12 K for x = 0.5. The neutron powder diffraction experiments show the ferromagnetic ordering of Ce3+ magnetic moments with a value of ~ 1.2 Bohr magneton at 1.8 K, oriented perpendicular to the hexagonal c-axis. By using symmetry analysis, we have found the solutions for the magnetic structure in the ferromagnetic Shubnikov space groups Cmc'21' and P21'/m' for x < 0.5 and x >= 0.5, respectively. Electrical resistivity exhibits a metallic temperature behaviour in all compounds. The resistivity has a local minimum in the paramagnetic state due to Kondo effects at high doping x = 0.8 and 1.0. At the small Cu-doping level, x = 0.2, the resistivity shows a broad feature at the ferromagnetic transition temperature and an additional transition-like peculiarity at 2.5 K in the ferromagnetic state.

Investigation of hydrogen incorporations in bulk infinite-layer nickelates

Infinite-layer (IL) nickelates are an emerging class of superconductors, where the Ni$^{1+}$ valence state in a square planar NiO$_2$ coordination can only be reached via topotactic reduction of the perovskite phase. However, this topotactic soft chemistry with hydrogenous reagents is still at a stage of rapid development, and there is a number of open issues, especially considering the possibility of hydrogen incorporation. Here we study the time dependence of the topotactic transformation of LaNiO$_3$ to LaNiO$_2$ for powder samples with x-ray diffraction and gas extraction techniques. While the hydrogen content of the powder increases with time, neutron diffraction shows no negative scattering of hydrogen in the LaNiO$_2$ crystal lattice. The extra hydrogen appears to be confined to grain boundaries or secondary-phase precipitates. The average crystal structure, and possibly also the physical properties, of the primary LaNiO$_2$ phase are therefore not noticeably affected by hydrogen residues created by the topotactic transformation.

A quantum liquid of magnetic octupoles on the pyrochlore lattice

Spin liquids are highly correlated yet disordered states formed by the entanglement of magnetic dipoles$^1$. Theories typically define such states using gauge fields and deconfined quasiparticle excitations that emerge from a simple rule governing the local ground state of a frustrated magnet. For example, the '2-in-2-out' ice rule for dipole moments on a tetrahedron can lead to a quantum spin ice in rare-earth pyrochlores - a state described by a lattice gauge theory of quantum electrodynamics$^{2-4}$. However, f-electron ions often carry multipole degrees of freedom of higher rank than dipoles, leading to intriguing behaviours and 'hidden' orders$^{5-6}$. Here we show that the correlated ground state of a Ce$^{3+}$-based pyrochlore, Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$, is a quantum liquid of magnetic octupoles. Our neutron scattering results are consistent with the formation of a fluid-like state of matter, but the intensity distribution is weighted to larger scattering vectors, which indicates that the correlated degrees of freedom have a more complex magnetization density than that typical of magnetic dipoles in a spin liquid. The temperature evolution of the bulk properties in the correlated regime below 1 Kelvin is well reproduced using a model of dipole-octupole doublets on a pyrochlore lattice$^{7-8}$. The nature and strength of the octupole-octupole couplings, together with the existence of a continuum of excitations attributed to spinons, provides further evidence for a quantum ice of octupoles governed by a '2-plus-2-minus' rule. Our work identifies Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ as a unique example of a material where frustrated multipoles form a 'hidden' topological order, thus generalizing observations on quantum spin liquids to multipolar phases that can support novel types of emergent fields and excitations.

Candidate Quantum Spin Liquid in the Ce\textsuperscript{3+} Pyrochlore Stannate Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$

We report the low temperature magnetic properties of Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$, a rare-earth pyrochlore. Our susceptibility and magnetization measurements show that due to the thermal isolation of a Kramers doublet ground state, Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ has Ising-like magnetic moments of $\sim1.18$ $μ_\mathrm{B}$. The magnetic moments are confined to the local trigonal axes, as in a spin ice, but the exchange interactions are antiferromagnetic. Below 1 K the system enters a regime with antiferromagnetic correlations. In contrast to predictions for classical $\langle 111 \rangle$-Ising spins on the pyrochlore lattice, there is no sign of long-range ordering down to 0.02 K. Our results suggest that Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ features an antiferromagnetic liquid ground state with strong quantum fluctuations.

New synthesis route and magnetic structure of Tm2Mn2O7 - pyrochlore

In this work we present a new chemical route to synthesize Tm2Mn2O7 pyrochlore, a compound which is thermodynamically unstable at ambient pressure. Differently from the reported in the past high pressure synthesis of the same compound applying oxides as starting materials, we have obtained a pure phase Tm2Mn2O7 by a converting TmMnO3 at 1100 C and 1300 bar oxygen pressure. The studies of Tm2Mn2O7 performed by a high resolution neutron powder diffraction have shown, that a pure pyrochlore cubic phase Tm2Mn2O7 (space group Fd-3m) have been obtained. On cooling below 25K there is a transition to a ferromagnetically (FM) ordered phase observed with an additional antiferromagnetic (AFM) canting suggesting a lowering of the initial cubic crystal symmetry. The magnetic transition is accompanied by small but well visible magnetostrsiction effect. Using symmetry analysis we have found a solution for the AFM structure in the maximal Shubnikov subgroup I41/am'd'.

Evidence for SrHo2O4 and SrDy2O4 as model J1-J2 zig-zag chain materials

Neutron diffraction and inelastic spectroscopy is used to characterize the magnetic Hamiltonian of SrHo2O4 and SrDy2O4. Through a detailed computation of the crystal-field levels we find site- dependent anisotropic single-ion magnetism in both materials and diffraction measurements show the presence of strong one-dimensional spin correlations. Our measurements indicate that competing interactions of the zig-zag chain, combined with frustrated interchain interactions, play a crucial role in stabilizing spin-liquid type correlations in this series.

Full propagation-vector star antiferromagnetic order in quantum spin trimer system ${\rm Ca_{3}CuNi_2(PO_4)_4}$

We show that the antiferromagnetic structure in the quantum spin trimer system ${{\rm Ca_{3}CuNi_2(PO_4)_4}}$ is based on both arms of propagation vector $\vec{k}$ star $\{[{1\over2},{1\over2},0],[-{1\over2},{1\over2},0]\}$ of the paramagnetic space group $C2/c$. The structure is generated by a symmetric direction of the order parameter of two dimensional irreducible representation of $C2/c$ with one active magnetic mode and corresponds to the Shubnikov magnetic space group $C_a2/c$. We reveal the relation between representation analysis in the propagation vector formalism and Shubnikov symmetry. These types of multi-$\vec{k}$ structures are extremely rarely observed experimentally. To further prove the specific magnetic structure we have performed the calculations of the spin expectation values in the isolated Ni$^{2+}$-Cu$^{2+}$-Ni$^{2+}$ trimer with realistic Hamiltonian. The calculated spin values $<\!S_{\rm Ni}\!\!>={0.9}$ and $<\!S_{\rm Cu}\!\!>={0.3}$ are within 10% accuracy in agreement with the experiment, providing strong complimentary argument in favor of multi-arm magnetic structure.

Oxygen isotope effect on structural parameters and on the thermal motion in La$_2$CuO$_4$

We studied the oxygen isotope effect (OIE) on the zero point motion and the thermal motion as well as on structural parameters in La$_2$CuO$_4$ by means of high-resolution neutron diffraction experiments. We found a negative OIE on the lattice parameters (-0.01%). The OIE on the isotropic thermal parameters turned out to be positive for lanthanum, copper and negative for the oxygen atoms, respectively. The Rietvield refinement of the anisotropic thermal parameters of the different directions yielded the same sign of the OIE for each ion. Our analysis shows that the OIE on isotropic thermal parameters is most pronounced for La at 15 K (up to 100%) which we found to be originating mainly from the thermal motion in x-direction as determined from the refinement of the anisotropic thermal parameters.

Microscopic studies of the normal and superconducting state of Ca3Ir4Sn13

We report on muon spin rotation (muSR) studies of the superconducting and magnetic properties of the ternary intermetallic stannide Ca3Ir4Sn13. This material has recently been the focus of intense research activity due to a proposed interplay of ferromagnetic spin fluctuations and superconductivity. In the temperature range T=1.6-200 K, we find that the zero-field muon relaxation rate is very low and does not provide evidence for spin fluctuations on the muSR time scale. The field-induced magnetization cannot be attributed to localized magnetic moments. In particular, our muSR data reveal that the anomaly observed in thermal and transport properties at T*~38 K is not of magnetic origin. Results for the transverse-field muon relaxation rate at T=0.02-12 K, suggest that superconductivity emerges out of a normal state that is not of a Fermi-liquid type. This is unusual for an electronic system lacking partially filled f-electron shells. The superconducting state is dominated by a nodeless order parameter with a London penetration depth of lambda=385(1) nm and the electron-phonon pairing interaction is in the strong-coupling limit.

Structural Evolution of One-dimensional Spin Ladder Compounds Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 with Ca doping and Related Hole Redistribution Evidence

Incommensurate crystal structures of spin ladder series Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 (x=3, 7, 11, 12.2) were characterized by powder neutron scattering method and refined using the superspace group Xmmm(00γ)ss0 (equivalent to superspace group Fmmm(0,0,1+γ)ss0); X stands for non-standard centering (0,0,0,0), (0,1/2,1/2,1/2), (1/2,1/2,0,0), (1/2,0,1/2,1/2)) with a modulated structure model. The Ca doping effects on the lattice parameters, atomic displacement, Cu-O distances, Cu-O bond angles and Cu bond valence sum were characterized. The refined results show that the CuO4 planar units in both chain and ladder sublattices become closer to square shape with an increase of Ca doping. The Cu bond valence sum calculation provided new evidence for the charge transfer from the chains to ladders (approximately 0.16 holes per Cu from x=0 to 12.2). The charge transfer was attributed to two different mechanisms: (a) the Cu-O bond distance shrinkage on the ladder; (b) increase of the interaction between two sublattices, resulting in Cu-O bonding between the chains and ladders. The low temperature structural refinement resulted in the similar conclusion, with a slight charge backflow to the chains.

The effect of compressive strain on the Raman modes of the dry and hydrated BaCe0.8Y0.2O3 proton conductor

The BaCe0.8Y0.2O3-δ proton conductor under hydration and under compressive strain has been analyzed with high pressure Raman spectroscopy and high pressure x-ray diffraction. The pressure dependent variation of the Ag and B2g bending modes from the O-Ce-O unit is suppressed when the proton conductor is hydrated, affecting directly the proton transfer by locally changing the electron density of the oxygen ions. Compressive strain causes a hardening of the Ce-O stretching bond. The activation barrier for proton conductivity is raised, in line with recent findings using high pressure and high temperature impedance spectroscopy. The increasing Raman frequency of the B1g and B3g modes thus implies that the phonons become hardened and increase the vibration energy in the a-c crystal plane upon compressive strain, whereas phonons are relaxed in the b-axis, and thus reveal softening of the Ag and B2g modes. Lattice toughening in the a-c crystal plane raises therefore a higher activation barrier for proton transfer and thus anisotropic conductivity. The experimental findings of the interaction of protons with the ceramic host lattice under external strain may provide a general guideline for yet to develop epitaxial strained proton conducting thin film systems with high proton mobility and low activation energy.

Synthesis, crystal structure and chemical stability of the superconductor FeSe_{1-x}

We report on a comparative study of the crystal structure and the magnetic properties of FeSe1-x (x= 0.00 - 0.15) superconducting samples by neutron powder diffraction and magnetization measurements. The samples were synthesized by two different methods: a 'low-temperature' one using powders as a starting material at T =700 C and a "high-temperature' method using solid pieces of Fe and Se at T= 1070 C. The effect of a starting (nominal) stoichiometry on the phase purity of the obtained samples, the superconducting transition temperature Tc, as well as the chemical instability of FeSe1-x at ambient conditions were investigated. It was found that in the Fe-Se system a stable phase exhibiting superconductivity at Tc~8K exists in a narrow range of selenium concentration (FeSe0.974(2)).
