Cu-doping effects on the ferromagnetic semimetal CeAuGe

We present a study of Cu-substitution effects in 4f-Ce intermetallic compound CeAu1-xCuxGe, with potentially unusual electronic states, in the whole concentration range (x = 0.0 - 1.0). The parent CeAuGe compound, crystallizing in a non-centrosymmetric hexagonal structure, is a ferromagnetic semimetal with Curie temperature 10 K. Cu-doping on Au-site of CeAuGe, CeAu1-xCuxGe, changes the crystal structure from the non-centrosymmetric (P63mc) to centrosymmetric (P63/mmc) space group at the concentration x ~ 0.5, where the c-lattice constant has a maximum value. Magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements reveal that all Cu-doped compounds undergo magnetic phase transition near 10 K, with the maximum transition temperature of 12 K for x = 0.5. The neutron powder diffraction experiments show the ferromagnetic ordering of Ce3+ magnetic moments with a value of ~ 1.2 Bohr magneton at 1.8 K, oriented perpendicular to the hexagonal c-axis. By using symmetry analysis, we have found the solutions for the magnetic structure in the ferromagnetic Shubnikov space groups Cmc'21' and P21'/m' for x < 0.5 and x >= 0.5, respectively. Electrical resistivity exhibits a metallic temperature behaviour in all compounds. The resistivity has a local minimum in the paramagnetic state due to Kondo effects at high doping x = 0.8 and 1.0. At the small Cu-doping level, x = 0.2, the resistivity shows a broad feature at the ferromagnetic transition temperature and an additional transition-like peculiarity at 2.5 K in the ferromagnetic state.

Spin-triplet superconductivity in Weyl nodal-line semimetals

Topological semimetals are three dimensional materials with symmetry-protected massless bulk excitations. As a special case, Weyl nodal-line semimetals are realized in materials either having no inversion or broken time-reversal symmetry and feature bulk nodal lines. The 111-family of materials, LaNiSi, LaPtSi and LaPtGe (all lacking inversion symmetry), belong to this class. Here, by combining muon-spin rotation and relaxation with thermodynamic measurements, we find that these materials exhibit a fully-gapped superconducting ground state, while spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry at the superconducting transition. Since time-reversal symmetry is essential for protecting the normal-state topology, its breaking upon entering the superconducting state should remarkably result in a topological phase transition. By developing a minimal model for the normal-state band structure and assuming a purely spin-triplet pairing, we show that the superconducting properties across the family can be described accurately. Our results demonstrate that the 111-family reported here provides an ideal test-bed for investigating the rich interplay between the exotic properties of Weyl nodal-line fermions and unconventional superconductivity.

Interdependent scaling of long-range oxygen and magnetic ordering in non-stoichiometric Nd${}_2$NiO${}_{4.10}$

Hole doping in Nd${}_{2}$NiO${}_{4.00}$ can be either achieved by substituting the trivalent Nd atoms by bivalent alkaline earth metals or by oxygen doping, yielding Nd${}_{2}$NiO${}_{4+δ}$. In this study, we investigated the interplay between oxygen and spin ordering for a low oxygen doping concentration i.e. Nd${}_{2}$NiO${}_{4.10}$. Although the extra oxygen doping level remains rather modest with only one out of 20 possible interstitial tetrahedral lattice sites occupied, we observed by single crystal neutron diffraction the presence of a complex 3D modulated structure related to oxygen ordering already at ambient, the modulation vectors being $\pm$2/13\textit{\textbf{a*}}$\pm$3/13\textit{\textbf{b*}}, $\pm$3/13\textit{\textbf{b*}}$\pm$2/13\textit{\textbf{b*}} and $\pm$1/5\textit{\textbf{a*}}$\pm$1/2\textit{\textbf{c*}} and satellite reflections up to fourth order. Temperature dependent neutron diffraction studies indicate the coexistence of oxygen and magnetic ordering below T${}_{N}$ $\simeq$ 48 K, the wave vector of the Ni sublattice being \textbf{\textit{k}}=(100). In addition, magnetic satellite reflections adapt exactly the same modulation vectors as found for the oxygen ordering, evidencing a unique coexistence of 3D modulated ordering for spin and oxygen ordering in Nd${}_{2}$NiO${}_{4.10}$. Temperature dependent measurements of magnetic intensities suggest two magnetic phase transitions below 48 K and 20 K, indicating two distinct onsets of magnetic ordering for the Ni and Nd sublattice, respectively.

Isostructural Metal-Insulator Transition Driven by Dimensional-Crossover in SrIrO3 Heterostructures

Dimensionality reduction induced metal-insulator transitions in oxide heterostructures are usually coupled with structural and magnetic phase transitions, which complicate the interpretation of the underlying physics. Therefore, achieving isostructural MIT is of great importance for fundamental physics and even more for applications. Here, we report an isostructural metal-insulator transition driven by dimensional-crossover in spin-orbital coupled SrIrO3 films. By using in-situ pulsed laser deposition and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we synthesized and investigated the electronic structure of SrIrO3 ultrathin films with atomic-layer precision. Through inserting orthorhombic CaTiO3 buffer layers, we demonstrate that the crystal structure of SrIrO3 films remains bulk-like with similar oxygen octahedra rotation and tilting when approaching the ultrathin limit. We observe that a dimensional-crossover metal-insulator transition occurs in isostructural SrIrO3 films. Intriguingly, we find the bandwidth of Jeff=3/2 states reduces with lowering the dimensionality and drives the metal-insulator transition. Our results establish a bandwidth controlled metal-insulator transition in the isostructural SrIrO3 thin films.

Structural disorder and magnetic correlations driven by oxygen doping in Nd2NiO4+d (d ~ 0.11)

We investigated the influence of oxygen over-stoichiometry on apical oxygen disorder and magnetic correlations in Nd2NiO4+d (d~0.11) in the temperature range of 2-300 K by means of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, neutron single crystal and powder diffraction studies, combined with macroscopic magnetic measurements. In the investigated temperature range, the compound crystalizes in a tetragonal commensurate structure with the P42/ncm space group with excess oxygen atoms occupy the 4b (3/4 1/4 1/4) interstitial sites, coordinated by four apical oxygen atoms. Large and anisotropic thermal displacement parameters are found for equatorial and apical oxygen atoms, which are strongly reduced on an absolute scale compared to the Nd2NiO4.23 phase. Maximum Entropy analysis of the neutron single crystal diffraction data uncovered anharmonic contributions to the displacement parameters of the apical oxygen atoms, toward the nearest vacant 4b interstitial site, related to the phonon assisted oxygen diffusion mechanism. Macroscopic magnetization measurements and neutron powder diffraction studies reveal long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ni-sublattice at TN ~ 53 K with a weak ferromagnetic component along the c-axis, while the long-range magnetic ordering of the Nd-sublattice occurs below 10 K. Temperature dependent neutron diffraction patterns show the appearance of a commensurate magnetic order at TN with the propagation vector k = (100) and the emergence of an additional incommensurate phase below 30 K, while both phases coexist at 2 K. The commensurate magnetic structure is best described by the P42/nc`m` Shubnikov space group. Refined magnetic moments of the Ni and Nd-sites at 2 K are 1.144(76) muB and 1.632(52) muB respectively. A possible origin of the incommensurate phase is discussed and a tentative magnetic phase diagram is proposed.

Universal spin-glass behaviour in bulk LaNiO2, PrNiO2 and NdNiO2

Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelate thin films, we report on a synthesis and magnetization study on bulk samples of the parent compounds ${R}$NiO$_{2}$ (${R}$=La, Pr, Nd). The frequency-dependent peaks of the AC magnetic susceptibility, along with remarkable memory effects, characterize spin-glass states. Furthermore, various phenomenological parameters via different spin glass models show strong similarity within these three compounds as well as with other rare-earth metal nickelates. The universal spin-glass behaviour distinguishes the nickelates from the parent compound CaCuO$_{2}$ of cuprate superconductors, which has the same crystal structure and $d^9$ electronic configuration but undergoes a long-range antiferromagnetic order. Our investigations may indicate a distinctly different nature of magnetism and superconductivity in the bulk nickelates than in the cuprates.

Anisotropic character of the metal-to-metal transition in Pr4Ni$_3$O$_{10}$

As a member of the Ruddlesden-Popper Ln$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{3n+1}$ series rare-earth-nickelates, the Pr4Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ consists of infinite quasi-two-dimensional perovskite-like Ni-O based layers. Although a metal-to-metal phase transition at Tpt = 157 K has been revealed by previous studies, a comprehensive study of physical properties associated with this transition has not yet been performed. We have grown single crystals of Pr4Ni3O10 at high oxygen pressure, and report on the physical properties around that phase transition, such as heat-capacity, electric-transport and magnetization. We observe a distinctly anisotropic behavior between in-plane and out-of-plane properties: a metal-to-metal transition at Tpt within the a-b plane, and a metal-to-insulator-like transition along the c-axis with decreasing temperature. Moreover, an anisotropic and anomalous negative magneto-resistance is observed at Tpt that we attribute to a slight suppression of the first-order transition with magnetic field. The magnetic-susceptibility can be well described by a Curie-Weiss law, with different Curie-constants and Pauli-spin susceptibilities between the high-temperature and the low-temperature phases. The single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements show a shape variation of the different NiO6 octahedra from the high-temperature phase to the low-temperature phase. This subtle change of the environment of the Ni sites is likely responsible for the different physical properties at high and low temperatures.

Development of the magnetism in the solid solution of the candidate Weyl semimetals Ce$_x$Pr$_{1-x}$AlGe

We investigate the macroscopic and microscopic physical properties of the solid solution of Ce$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$AlGe. The series tunes from CeAlGe with its multi-$\vec{k}$ structure and a major Moment in the ab-plane, to PrAlGe with an easy-c-axis ferromagnetic ground state co-existing with a low density of nanoscale textured magnetic Domain walls. Using AC-, DC-susceptiblity, resistivity, specific heat, muon spin relaxation/rotation and neutron scattering we analyze the magnetic ground state of the series. We provide further evidence supporting our previous claim for spin-glass like properties in pure PrAlGe. With introduction of Pr to CeAlGe the finite magnetic field required to stabilize the topological multi-$\vec{k}$ magnetic phase for $x=0$ becomes suppressed. The crossover between the two end-member ground states occurs in the vicinity of $x=0.3$, a region where we further anticipate the field-induced topological magnetic phase for $x < 0.3$ to become the zero field ground state.

Electron-Phonon-Driven Three-Dimensional Metallicity in an Insulating Cuprate

The role of the crystal lattice for the electronic properties of cuprates and other high-temperature superconductors remains controversial despite decades of theoretical and experimental efforts. While the paradigm of strong electronic correlations suggests a purely electronic mechanism behind the insulator-to-metal transition, recently the mutual enhancement of the electron-electron and the electron-phonon interaction and its relevance to the formation of the ordered phases have also been emphasized. Here, we combine polarization-resolved ultrafast optical spectroscopy and state-of-the-art dynamical mean-field theory to show the importance of the crystal lattice in the breakdown of the correlated insulating state in an archetypal undoped cuprate. We identify signatures of electron-phonon coupling to specific fully-symmetric optical modes during the build-up of a three-dimensional metallic state that follows charge photodoping. Calculations for coherently displaced crystal structures along the relevant phonon coordinates indicate that the insulating state is remarkably unstable toward metallization despite the seemingly large charge-transfer energy scale. This hitherto unobserved insulator-to-metal transition mediated by fully-symmetric lattice modes can find extensive application in a plethora of correlated solids.

New synthesis route and magnetic structure of Tm2Mn2O7 - pyrochlore

In this work we present a new chemical route to synthesize Tm2Mn2O7 pyrochlore, a compound which is thermodynamically unstable at ambient pressure. Differently from the reported in the past high pressure synthesis of the same compound applying oxides as starting materials, we have obtained a pure phase Tm2Mn2O7 by a converting TmMnO3 at 1100 C and 1300 bar oxygen pressure. The studies of Tm2Mn2O7 performed by a high resolution neutron powder diffraction have shown, that a pure pyrochlore cubic phase Tm2Mn2O7 (space group Fd-3m) have been obtained. On cooling below 25K there is a transition to a ferromagnetically (FM) ordered phase observed with an additional antiferromagnetic (AFM) canting suggesting a lowering of the initial cubic crystal symmetry. The magnetic transition is accompanied by small but well visible magnetostrsiction effect. Using symmetry analysis we have found a solution for the AFM structure in the maximal Shubnikov subgroup I41/am'd'.

Novel synthesis method of nonstoichiometric Na2-xIrO3. Crystal structure, transport and magnetic properties

Transition metal oxides with 4d or 5d metals are of great interest due to the competing interactions, of the Coulomb repulsion and the itineracy of the d-electrons, opening a possibility of building new quantum ground states. Particularly the 5d metal oxides containing Iridium have received significant attention within the last years, due to their unexpected physical properties, caused by a strong spin orbit coupling observed in Ir(IV). A prominent example is the Mott-insulator Sr2IrO4. Another member of this family, the honeycomb lattice compound Na2IrO3, also being a Mott-insulator having, most probably, a Kitaev spin liquid ground state. By deintercalating sodium from Na2IrO3, we were able to synthesize a new honeycomb lattice compound with more than 50% reduced sodium content. The reduction of the sodium content in this layered compound leads to a change of the oxidation state of iridium from +IV to +V/+VI and a symmetry change from C2/c to P-3. This goes along with significant changes of the physical properties. Besides the vanishing magnetic ordering at 15K, also the transport properties changes and instead insulating semiconducting properties are observed.

Probing the electron-phonon interaction in correlated systems with coherent lattice fluctuation spectroscopy

Tailoring the properties of correlated oxides is accomplished by chemical doping, pressure, temperature or magnetic field. Photoexcitation is a valid alternative to reach out-of-equilibrium states otherwise inaccessible. Here, we quantitatively estimate the coupling between a lattice distortion and the charge-transfer excitation in (La$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$). We photoinduce a coherent La ion vibration and monitor the response of the optical constants in a broad energy range, providing quantitative information on the electron-phonon matrix element that can be compared to theoretical models. We propose the same methodology to probe electron-electron interactions in other materials.

Spin-Polarized Quantum Well States on Bi$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Se$_3$

Low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy is used to image the doped topological insulator Bi$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Se$_3$. Interstitial Fe defects allow the detection of quasiparticle interference (QPI), and the reconstruction of the empty state band structure. Quantitative comparison between measured data and density functional theory calculations reveals the unexpected coexistence of quantum well states (QWS) with topological surface states (TSS) on the atomically clean surface of Bi$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Se$_3$. Spectroscopic measurements quantify the breakdown of linear dispersion due to hexagonal warping. Nonetheless, both QWS and TSS remain spin-polarized and protected from backscattering to almost 1 eV above the Dirac point, suggesting their utility for spin-based applications.

Oxygen isotope effect on structural parameters and on the thermal motion in La$_2$CuO$_4$

We studied the oxygen isotope effect (OIE) on the zero point motion and the thermal motion as well as on structural parameters in La$_2$CuO$_4$ by means of high-resolution neutron diffraction experiments. We found a negative OIE on the lattice parameters (-0.01%). The OIE on the isotropic thermal parameters turned out to be positive for lanthanum, copper and negative for the oxygen atoms, respectively. The Rietvield refinement of the anisotropic thermal parameters of the different directions yielded the same sign of the OIE for each ion. Our analysis shows that the OIE on isotropic thermal parameters is most pronounced for La at 15 K (up to 100%) which we found to be originating mainly from the thermal motion in x-direction as determined from the refinement of the anisotropic thermal parameters.

Microscopic studies of the normal and superconducting state of Ca3Ir4Sn13

We report on muon spin rotation (muSR) studies of the superconducting and magnetic properties of the ternary intermetallic stannide Ca3Ir4Sn13. This material has recently been the focus of intense research activity due to a proposed interplay of ferromagnetic spin fluctuations and superconductivity. In the temperature range T=1.6-200 K, we find that the zero-field muon relaxation rate is very low and does not provide evidence for spin fluctuations on the muSR time scale. The field-induced magnetization cannot be attributed to localized magnetic moments. In particular, our muSR data reveal that the anomaly observed in thermal and transport properties at T*~38 K is not of magnetic origin. Results for the transverse-field muon relaxation rate at T=0.02-12 K, suggest that superconductivity emerges out of a normal state that is not of a Fermi-liquid type. This is unusual for an electronic system lacking partially filled f-electron shells. The superconducting state is dominated by a nodeless order parameter with a London penetration depth of lambda=385(1) nm and the electron-phonon pairing interaction is in the strong-coupling limit.

Magnetothermoelectric effects in Fe{1+d}Te{1-x}Se{x}

We report resistivity as well as the Hall, Seebeck and Nernst coefficients data for Fe{1+d}Te{1-x}Se{x} single crystals with x = 0, 0.38, and 0.40. In the parent compound Fe{1.04}Te we observe at Tn = 61 K a sudden change of all quantities studied, which can be ascribed to the Fermi surface reconstruction due to onset of the antiferromagnetic order. Two very closely doped samples: Fe{1.01}Te{0.62}Se{0.38} (Se38) and Fe{1.01}Te{0.60}Se{0.40} (Se40) are superconductors with Tc = 13.4 K and 13.9 K, respectively. There are no evident magnetic transitions in either Se38 or Se40. Properties of these two single crystals are almost identical at high temperatures, but start to diverge below T ~ 80 K. Perhaps we see the onset of scattering that might be a related to changes in short range magnetic correlations caused by selenium doping.

Structural Evolution of One-dimensional Spin Ladder Compounds Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 with Ca doping and Related Hole Redistribution Evidence

Incommensurate crystal structures of spin ladder series Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 (x=3, 7, 11, 12.2) were characterized by powder neutron scattering method and refined using the superspace group Xmmm(00γ)ss0 (equivalent to superspace group Fmmm(0,0,1+γ)ss0); X stands for non-standard centering (0,0,0,0), (0,1/2,1/2,1/2), (1/2,1/2,0,0), (1/2,0,1/2,1/2)) with a modulated structure model. The Ca doping effects on the lattice parameters, atomic displacement, Cu-O distances, Cu-O bond angles and Cu bond valence sum were characterized. The refined results show that the CuO4 planar units in both chain and ladder sublattices become closer to square shape with an increase of Ca doping. The Cu bond valence sum calculation provided new evidence for the charge transfer from the chains to ladders (approximately 0.16 holes per Cu from x=0 to 12.2). The charge transfer was attributed to two different mechanisms: (a) the Cu-O bond distance shrinkage on the ladder; (b) increase of the interaction between two sublattices, resulting in Cu-O bonding between the chains and ladders. The low temperature structural refinement resulted in the similar conclusion, with a slight charge backflow to the chains.

Synthesis, crystal structure and chemical stability of the superconductor FeSe_{1-x}

We report on a comparative study of the crystal structure and the magnetic properties of FeSe1-x (x= 0.00 - 0.15) superconducting samples by neutron powder diffraction and magnetization measurements. The samples were synthesized by two different methods: a 'low-temperature' one using powders as a starting material at T =700 C and a "high-temperature' method using solid pieces of Fe and Se at T= 1070 C. The effect of a starting (nominal) stoichiometry on the phase purity of the obtained samples, the superconducting transition temperature Tc, as well as the chemical instability of FeSe1-x at ambient conditions were investigated. It was found that in the Fe-Se system a stable phase exhibiting superconductivity at Tc~8K exists in a narrow range of selenium concentration (FeSe0.974(2)).
