Heat capacities of nanostructured wurtzite and rock salt ZnO: challenges of ZnO nano-phase diagram

Low-temperature heat capacities (Cp) of nanostructured rock salt (rs-ZnO) and wurtzite (w-ZnO) polymorphs of zinc oxide were measured in the 2-315 K temperature range. No significant influence of nanostructuring on Cp of w-ZnO has been observed. The measured Cp of rock salt ZnO is lower than that of wurtzite ZnO below 100 K and is higher above this temperature. Using available thermodynamic data, we established that the equilibrium pressure between nanocrystalline w-ZnO and rs-ZnO is close to 4.6 GPa at 300 K (half as much as the onset pressure of direct phase transformation) and slightly changes with temperature up to 1000 K.

High-pressure synthesis of boron-rich chalcogenides B12S and B12Se

Two boron-rich chalcogenides B12S and B12Se isostructural to α-rhombohedral boron were synthesized by chemical reaction of the elements at high-pressure - high-temperature conditions. The crystal structures and stoichiometries of both compounds were confirmed by Rietveld refinement and elemental analysis. The experimental Raman spectra of B12S and B12Se were investigated for the first time. All observed Raman bands have been attributed to the theoretically calculated phonon modes, and the mode assignment has been performed.

Tricarbon: two novel ultra-hard metallic carbon allotropes from first-principle calculations

Based on crystal chemistry considerations and quantum density functional theory ground state calculations, rhombohedral rh-C3 and hexagonal h-C6 carbon allotropes are proposed and energetically calculated as new stable ultra-hard phases likewise lonsdaleite. Along the two kinds of carbon in linear C2-C1-C2 lattice, distorted tetrahedra C2(sp3) with an angle of 106.17° (smaller than ideal 109.4°) and C1(sp)-like hybridizations are inferred from charge density projections. The calculated elastic constants point to a strong anisotropy of mechanical properties of rh-C3 and h-C6 with an exceptionally large C33 values (1636 GPa and 1610 GPa, respectively), exceeding that of lonsdaleite (1380 GPa), due to the presence of aligned tricarbon units along the hexagonal c-axis. Both phases are characterized by large bulk moduli and high hardness values that are slightly less than those of lonsdaleite and diamond. Weak metallic behavior of both new phases is identified from electronic band structure calculations.

First-principles studies of the electronic and magnetic structures and bonding properties of boron subnitride B$_{13}$N$_2$

Rhombohedral B$_{12}$ unit is viewed as a host matrix embedding linear tri-atomic arrangements of elements (E) resulting in a relatively large family of boron-rich compounds with B$_{12}${E-E-E} generic formulation. The present work focuses on boron subnitride, B$_{13}$N$_2$ that we express in present context as B$_{12}${N-B-N}. Within well established quantum density functional theory (DFT) a full study of its electronic properties is provided. Also linear triatomic arrangements in view of the existence in simple compounds such as sodium azide NaN$_3$, i.e., Na$^I${N-N-N} and calcium cyanamide, Ca$^{II}${N-C-N}, we devised Sc$^{III}${N-B-N} to establish comparison with B$_{12}${N-B-N}. ScBN$_2$ is calculated to be cohesive and possessing N-B-N isolated from ScIII with dB-N = 1.33 Å. In B$_{12}${N-B-N} an elongated dB-N=1.43 Å is identified due to the bonding of N with one of the two B12 boron substructures, B1 with the formation of "3B...N-B-N...3B"-like complex accompanied by a magnetic instability. Spin polarized (SP) calculations led to the onset of magnetization on central boron with M=1 $μ_B$ in a stable half-ferromagnetic ground state observed from the electronic density of states (DOS). The results are backed with total energy and calculations in both non-spin-polarized (NSP) and spin-polarized stabilizing the latter configuration over a broad range of volumes from M(V) plots. Further illustrative results are given with the charge densities (total and magnetic) and electron localization function (ELF).

The effect of doping on the lattice parameter and properties of cubic boron nitride

The effect of doping of cubic boron nitride with beryllium, silicon, sulfur and magnesium on the lattice parameters, electrical conductivity and EPR spectra has been studied. It is established that the degree of doping increases significantly in the case of crystallization of cubic boron nitride from BN solutions in supercritical ammonia at 3.9-4.2 GPa and 1100°C in comparison with the conventional synthesis from melts of the Mg-B-N system at 4.2 GPa and 1400°C. Doping with silicon and beryllium results in semiconductor properties of cubic boron nitride.

Discovery of new boron-rich chalcogenides: orthorhombic B6X (X = S, Se)

New boron-rich sulfide B6S and selenide B6Se have been discovered from high pressure - high temperature synthesis combined with ab initio evolutionary crystal structure prediction, and studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy at ambient conditions. As it follows from Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction data, both chalcogenides have orthorhombic symmetry and belongs to Pmna space group. All experimentally observed Raman bands have been attributed to the theoretically calculated phonon modes, and the mode assignment has been performed. Prediction of mechanical properties (hardness and elastic moduli) of new boron-rich chalcogenides have been made using ab initio routines, and both compounds were found to be members of a family of hard phases (Hv ~ 31 GPa).

Thermoelastic equation of state and melting of Mg metal at high pressure and high temperature

The p-V-T equation of state of magnesium metal has been measured up to 20 GPa and 1500 K using both multianvil and opposite anvil techniques combined with synchrotron X-ray diffraction. To fit the experimental data, the model of Anderson-Grüneisen has been used with fixed parameter δT. The 300-K bulk modulus of B0 = 32.5(1) GPa and its first pressure derivative, B0' = 3.73(2), have been obtained by fitting available data up to 20 GPa to Murnaghan equation of state. Thermal expansion at ambient pressure has been described using second order polynomial with coefficients a = 25(2)x10-6 K-1 and b = 9.4(4)x10-9 K-2. The parameter describing simultaneous pressure and temperature impact on thermal expansion coefficient (and, therefore, volume) is δT = 1.5(5). The good agreement between fitted and experimental isobars has been achieved to relative volumes of 0.75. The Mg melting observed by X-ray diffraction and in situ electrical resistivity measurements confirms previous results and additionally confirms the p-T estimations in the vicinity of melting.

Melting of B12P2 boron subphosphide under pressure

Melting of boron subphosphide (B12P2) to 26 GPa has been studied by in situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell, and by quenching and electrical resistance measurements in a toroid-type high-pressure apparatus. B12P2 melts congruently, and the melting curve has a positive slope of 23(6) K/GPa. No solid-state phase transition was observed up to the melting in the whole pressure range under study.

Orthorhombic boron oxide under pressure: in situ study by X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering

High-pressure phase of boron oxide, orthorhombic \b{eta}-B2O3, has been studied in situ by synchrotron X-ray diffraction to 22 GPa and Raman scattering to 46 GPa at room temperature. The bulk modulus of \b{eta}-B2O3 has been found to be 169(3) GPa that is in good agreement with our ab initio calculations. Raman and IR spectra of \b{eta}-B2O3 have been measured at ambient pressure, all experimentally observed bands have been attributed to the theoretically calculated ones, and the mode assignment has been performed. Based on the data on Raman shift as a function of pressure, combined with equation-of-state data, the Grüneisen parameters of all experimentally observed Raman bands have been calculated. \b{eta}-B2O3 enriched by 10B isotope has been synthesized, and the effect of boron isotopic substitution on Raman spectra has been studied.

Boron phosphide under pressure: in situ study by Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction

Cubic boron phosphide BP has been studied in situ by X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering up to 55 GPa at 300 K in a diamond anvil cell. The bulk modulus of B0 = 174(2) GPa has been established, which is in excellent agreement with our ab initio calculations. The data on Raman shift as a function of pressure, combined with equation-of-state data, allowed us to estimate the Grüneisen parameters of the TO and LO modes of zinc-blende structure, γGTO = 1.16 and γGLO = 1.04, just like in the case of other AIIIBV diamond-like phases, for which γGTO > γGLO = 1. We also established that the pressure dependence of the effective electro-optical constant α is responsible for a strong change in relative intensities of the TO and LO modes from ITO/ILO ~0.25 at 0.1 MPa to ITO/ILO ~2.5 at 45 GPa, for which we also find excellent agreement between experiment and theory.

Novel phase of beryllium fluoride at high pressure

A previously unknown thermodynamically stable high-pressure phase of BeF$_{2}$ has been predicted using the evolutionary algorithm USPEX. This phase occurs in the pressure range 18-27 GPa. Its structure has $C2/c$ space group symmetry and contains 18 atoms in the primitive unit cell. Given the analogy between BeF$_{2}$ and SiO$_{2}$, silica phases have been investigated as well, but the new phase has not been observed to be thermodynamically stable for this system. However, it is found to be metastable and to have comparable energy to the known metastable phases of SiO$_{2}$, suggesting a possibility of its synthesis.

Phonon study of rhombohedral BS under high pressure

Raman spectra of rhombohedral boron monosulfide (r-BS) were measured under pressures up to 34 GPa at room temperature. No pressure-induced structural phase transition was observed, while strong pressure shift of Raman bands towards higher wavenumbers has been revealed. IR spectroscopy as a complementary technique has been used in order to completely describe the phonon modes of r-BS. All experimentally observed bands have been compared with theoretically calculated ones and modes assignment has been performed. r-BS enriched by 10B isotope was synthesized, and the effect of boron isotopic substitution on Raman spectra was observed and analyzed.

Equation of state of single-crystal cubic boron phosphide

The 300 K equation of state of cubic (zinc-blende) boron phosphide BP has been studied by in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation up to 55 GPa. The measurements have been performed under quasi-hydrostatic conditions using a Ne pressure medium in a diamond anvil cell. A fit of the experimental p-V data to the Vinet equation of state yields the bulk modulus B0 of 179(1) GPa with its pressure derivative of 3.3(1). These values are in a good agreement with previous elastic measurements, as well as with semiempirical estimations.

Thermoelastic Equation of State of Boron Suboxide B6O up to 6 GPa and 2700 K: Simplified Anderson-Grüneisen Model and Thermodynamic Consistency

p-V-T equation of state of superhard boron suboxide B6O has been measured up to 6 GPa and 2700 K using multianvil technique and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. To fit the experimental data, the theoretical p-V-T equation of state has been derived in approximation of the constant value of the Anderson-Grüneisen parameter δT. The model includes bulk modulus B0 =181 GPa and its first pressure derivative B0' = 6 at 300 K; two parameters describing thermal expansion at 0.1 MPa, i.e. a = 1.4x10-5 K-1 and b = 5x10-9 K-2, as well as δT = 6. The good agreement between fitted and experimental isobars has been achieved to the absolute volume changes up to 5% as compared to volume at standard conditions, V0. The fitted thermal expansion at 0.1 MPa is well consistent with the experimental data, as well as with ambient-pressure heat capacity cp, bulk modulus B0 and δT describing its evolution with volume and temperature. The fitted value of Grüneisen parameter γ = 0.85 is in agreement with previous empiric estimations for B6O and experimental values for other boron-rich solids.

Comment on "Thermodynamic properties of rock-salt ZnO" by Leitner et al. [Thermochimica Acta 572 (2013) 1-5]

Very recently Leitner et al. [Thermochimica Acta 572 (2013) 1-5] have tried to extract the thermodynamic data of rock-salt ZnO from ab initio and experimental data available in the literature. In this Comment we show that neglecting (i) the strongly pronounced kinetic features of the pressure-induced phase transition in ZnO at room temperature and (ii) results of calorimetric measurements available in the literature [Russ. Chem. Bull. 59 (2010) 325-328] makes the proposed set of thermodynamic functions completely incorrect.

Crystal structure of dense pseudo-cubic boron allotrope, pc-B52, by powder X-ray diffraction

During past years, a number of reports have been published on synthesis of tetragonal allotrope of boron, t-B52 phase. However, no unambiguous characterization of the crystal structure has been performed to the present time, while remarkable variation of the a/c lattice-parameter ratio raises strong doubts about its uniqueness. Here the Rietveld refinement of the crystal structure of the high pressure - high temperature boron phase synthesized by a direct solid-state transformation of rhombohedral beta-B106 at 20 GPa and 2500 K has been reported for the first time. Although this boron allotrope belongs to the t-B52 type, its structure can be considered as pseudo-cubic with the a/c ratio of sqr(2).

Low-temperature thermal expansion of rock-salt ZnO

Lattice parameter of metastable high-pressure phase of zinc oxide, rock-salt ZnO was measured in the 10-300 K temperature range using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. No phase transition was observed down to 10 K. The lattice parameter of rock-salt ZnO was found to increase from 4.266 Å in the 10-80 K range up to 4.2752(3) Å at 298 K, while the volume thermal expansion coefficient increases from slight negative values below 40 K up to 4.77\times10^-5 K^-1 at 298 K.

Comment on Zarechnaya et al. Pressure-induced isostructural phase transformation in gamma-B28. Phys. Rev. B 82, 184111 (2010)

Zarechnaya et al. claimed an isostructural transformation in gamma-B28 at about 40 GPa; below which the phase is more compressible (B0=227 GPa) and above which less compressible (B0=281 GPa) than in previous experiments or theory. Here we wish to point out some interesting questions related to these claims. Summarizing briefly our points, the suggestion of an isostructural transformation is inconsistent with ab initio calculations and experiment, we see no physical mechanism that could be responsible for such a transformation, and the evidence for it is self-contradictory.

Experimental study and critical review of structural, thermodynamic and mechanical properties of superhard refractory boron suboxide, B6O

In the present paper we performed the analysis of available data on structural, thermodynamic and mechanical properties of B6O. Although the compound is known for half a century and has been extensively studied, many properties of this boron-rich solid remain unknown or doubtful. Semi-empirical analysis of our experimental and literature data allowed us to choose the best values of main thermodynamic and mechanical characteristics among previously reported data, to predict the thermoelastic equation of state of B6O, and dependence of its hardness on non-stoichiometry and temperature.

The high-pressure phase of boron, γ-B28: disputes and conclusions of 5 years after discovery

γ-B28 is a recently established high-pressure phase of boron. Its structure consists of icosahedral B12 clusters and B2 dumbbells in a NaCl-type arrangement (B2)δ+(B12)δ- and displays a significant charge transfer δ~0.5- 0.6. The discovery of this phase proved essential for the understanding and construction of the phase diagram of boron. γ-B28 was first experimentally obtained as a pure boron allotrope in early 2004 and its structure was discovered in 2006. This paper reviews recent results and in particular deals with the contentious issues related to the equation of state, hardness, putative isostructural phase transformation at ~40 GPa, and debates on the nature of chemical bonding in this phase. Our analysis confirms that (a) calculations based on density functional theory give an accurate description of its equation of state, (b) the reported isostructural phase transformation in γ-B28 is an artifact rather than a fact, (c) the best estimate of hardness of this phase is 50 GPa, (d) chemical bonding in this phase has a significant degree of ionicity. Apart from presenting an overview of previous results within a consistent view grounded in experiment, thermodynamics and quantum mechanics, we present new results on Bader charges in γ-B28 using different levels of quantum-mechanical theory (GGA, exact exchange, and HSE06 hybrid functional), and show that the earlier conclusion about significant degree of partial ionicity in this phase is very robust.

Thermodynamic aspects of materials' hardness: prediction of novel superhard high-pressure phases

In the present work we have proposed the method that allows one to easily estimate hardness and bulk modulus of known or hypothetical solid phases from the data on Gibbs energy of atomization of the elements and corresponding covalent radii. It has been shown that hardness and bulk moduli of compounds strongly correlate with their thermodynamic and structural properties. The proposed method may be used for a large number of compounds with various types of chemical bonding and structures; moreover, the temperature dependence of hardness may be calculated, that has been performed for diamond and cubic boron nitride. The correctness of this approach has been shown for the recently synthesized superhard diamond-like BC5. It has been predicted that the hypothetical forms of B2O3, diamond-like boron, BCx and COx, which could be synthesized at high pressures and temperatures, should have extreme hardness.

Femtosecond and Ultraviolet Laser Irradiation of Graphite-Like Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Effect of the femtosecond and nanosecond UV laser irradiation (below the ablation threshold) of graphite-like hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has been studied. Experiments were carried out with the compacted powder under high vacuum at room temperature using excimer KrF laser (248 nm). In the nanosecond operation mode, the laser-induced fluorescence spectra are found strongly modified depending on the integrated doze, which is attributed to a progressive enrichment of the surface layer by elemental boron. A slow sample recovery after the laser irradiation has been observed. On the other hand, in the femtosecond mode the fluorescence spectra depend on the laser fluence, and the changes are reversible: low energy fluorescence spectra are restored immediately when the laser energy decreases. This effect can be explained by a material bleaching, which favors a bulk centers emission. The ablation threshold has been determined as 78 mJ/cm2 in the femtosecond laser operational mode.
