The number of framings of a knot in a 3-manifold

In view of the self-linking invariant, the number ∣K∣|K| of framed knots in S3S^3 with given underlying knot KK is infinite. In fact, the second author previously defined affine self-linking invariants and used them to show that ∣K∣|K| is infinite for every knot in an orientable manifold unless the manifold contains a connected sum factor of S1×S2S^1\times S^2; the knot KK need not be zero-homologous and the manifold is not required to be compact. We show that when MM is orientable, the number ∣K∣|K| is infinite unless KK intersects a non-separating sphere at exactly one point, in which case ∣K∣=2|K|=2; the existence of a non-separating sphere implies that MM contains a connected sum factor of S1×S2S^1\times S^2. For knots in nonorientable manifolds we show that if ∣K∣|K| is finite, then KK is disorienting, or there is an isotopy from the knot to itself which changes the orientation of its normal bundle, or it intersects some embedded S2S^2 or RP2\mathbb R P^2 at exactly one point, or it intersects some embedded S2S^2 at exactly two points in such a way that a closed curve consisting of an arc in KK between the intersection points and an arc in S2S^2 is disorienting.

Cosmic censorship of smooth structures

It is observed that on many 4-manifolds there is a unique smooth structure underlying a globally hyperbolic Lorentz metric. For instance, every contractible smooth 4-manifold admitting a globally hyperbolic Lorentz metric is diffeomorphic to the standard R4\R^4. Similarly, a smooth 4-manifold homeomorphic to the product of a closed oriented 3-manifold NN and R\R and admitting a globally hyperbolic Lorentz metric is in fact diffeomorphic to N×RN\times \R. Thus one may speak of a censorship imposed by the global hyperbolicty assumption on the possible smooth structures on (3+1)(3+1)-dimensional spacetimes.

Intersections of Loops and the Andersen-Mattes-Reshetikhin Algebra

Given two free homotopy classes α1,α2α_1, α_2 of loops on an oriented surface, it is natural to ask how to compute the minimum number of intersection points m(α1,α2)m(α_1, α_2) of loops in these two classes. We show that for α1≠α2α_1\neqα_2 the number of terms in the Andersen-Mattes-Reshetikhin Poisson bracket of α1α_1 and α2α_2 is equal to m(α1,α2)m(α_1, α_2). Chas found examples showing that a similar statement does not, in general, hold for the Goldman Lie bracket of α1α_1 and α2α_2. The main result of this paper in the case where α1,α2α_1, α_2 do not contain different powers of the same loop first appeared in the unpublished preprint of the second author. In order to prove the main result for all pairs of α1≠α2α_1\neq α_2 we had to use the techniques developed by the first author in her study of operations generalizing Turaev's cobracket of loops on a surface.

Some Corollaries of Manturov's projection Theorem

In our works with Stoimenow, Vdovina and with Byberi, we introduced the virtual canonical genus gvc(K)g_{vc}(K) and the virtual bridge number vb(K)vb(K) invariants of virtual knots. One can see from the definitions that for an classical knot KK the values of these invariants are less or equal than the classical canonical genus gc(K)g_c(K) and the bridge number b(K)b(K) respectively. We use Manturov's projection from the category of virtual knot diagrams to the category of classical knot diagrams, to show that for every classical knot type KK we have gvc(K)=gc(K)g_{vc}(K)=g_c(K) and vb(K)=b(K)vb(K)=b(K).

Topological properties of manifolds admitting a YxY^x-Riemannian metric

A complete Riemannian manifold (M,g)(M, g) is a YlxY^x_l-manifold if every unit speed geodesic γ(t)γ(t) originating at γ(0)=x∈Mγ(0)=x\in M satisfies γ(l)=xγ(l)=x for 0≠l∈R0\neq l\in \R. Bérard-Bergery proved that if (Mm,g),m>1(M^m,g), m>1 is a YlxY^x_l-manifold, then MM is a closed manifold with finite fundamental group, and the cohomology ring $H^*(M, \Q)$ is generated by one element. We say that (M,g)(M,g) is a YxY^x-manifold if for every ε>0ε>0 there exists l>εl>ε such that for every unit speed geodesic γ(t)γ(t) originating at xx, the point γ(l)γ(l) is εε-close to xx. We use Low's notion of refocussing Lorentzian space-times to show that if (Mm,g),m>1(M^m, g), m>1 is a YxY^x-manifold, then MM is a closed manifold with finite fundamental group. As a corollary we get that a Riemannian covering of a YxY^x-manifold is a YxY^x-manifold. Another corollary is that if (Mm,g),m=2,3(M^m,g), m=2,3 is a YxY^x-manifold, then (M,h)(M, h) is a YlxY^x_l-manifold for some metric h.h.

Legendrian links, causality, and the Low conjecture

Let (Xm+1,g)(X^{m+1}, g) be a globally hyperbolic spacetime with Cauchy surface diffeomorphic to an open subset of Rm\mathbb R^m. The Legendrian Low conjecture formulated by Natário and Tod says that two events x,y∈ßx,y\inß are causally related if and only if the Legendrian link of spheres Sx,Sy\mathfrak S_x, \mathfrak S_y whose points are light geodesics passing through xx and yy is non-trivial in the contact manifold of all light geodesics in XX. The Low conjecture says that for m=2m=2 the events x,yx,y are causally related if and only if Sx,Sy\mathfrak S_x, \mathfrak S_y is non-trivial as a topological link. We prove the Low and the Legendrian Low conjectures. We also show that similar statements hold for any globally hyperbolic (Xm+1,g)(X^{m+1}, g) such that a cover of its Cauchy surface is diffeomorphic to an open domain in Rm.\mathbb R^m.

Non-negative Legendrian isotopy in ST∗MST^*M

It is shown that if the universal cover of a manifold MM is an open manifold, then two different fibres of the spherical cotangent bundle ST∗MST^*M cannot be connected by a non-negative Legendrian isotopy. This result is applied to the study of causality in globally hyperbolic spacetimes. It is also used to strengthen a result of Eliashberg, Kim, and Polterovich on the existence of a partial order on Cont~0(ST∗M)\widetilde{\mathrm{Cont}}_0 (ST^*M).

Virtual Bridge Number One Knots

We define the virtual bridge number vb(K)vb(K) and the virtual unknotting number vu(K)vu(K) invariants for virtual knots. For ordinary knots KK they are closely related to the bridge number b(K)b(K) and the unknotting number u(K)u(K) and we have vu(K)≤u(K),vb(K)≤b(K).vu(K)\leq u(K), vb(K)\leq b(K). There are no ordinary knots KK with b(K)=1.b(K)=1. We show there are infinitely many homotopy classes of virtual knots each of which contains infinitely many isotopy classes of KK with vb(K)=1.vb(K)=1. In fact for each i∈Ni\in \N there exists KK virtually homotopic (but not virtually isotopic) to the unknot with vb(K)=1vb(K)=1 and vu(K)=i.vu(K)=i.

The universal order one invariant of framed knots in most S^1-bundles over orientable surfaces

It is well-known that self-linking is the only Z valued Vassiliev invariant of framed knots in S^3. However for most 3-manifolds, in particular for the total spaces of S^1-bundles over an orientable surface F not S^2, the space of Z-valued order one invariants is infinite dimensional. We give an explicit formula for the order one invariant I of framed knots in orientable total spaces of S^1-bundles over an orientable not necessarily compact surface F not S^2. We show that if F is not S^2 or S^1 X S^1, then I is the universal order one invariant, i.e. it distinguishes every two framed knots that can be distinguished by order one invariants with values in an Abelian group.
