Full Spark Frames in the Orbit of a Representation

We present a new infinite family of full spark frames in finite dimensions arising from a unitary group representation, where the underlying group is the semi-direct product of a cyclic group by a group of automorphisms. The only previously known algebraically constructed infinite families were the harmonic, Gabor and Dihedral frames. Our construction hinges on a theorem that requires no group structure. Additionally, we illustrate our results by providing explicit constructions of full spark frames.

On exponential bases and frames with non-linear phase functions and some applications

In this paper, we study the spectrality and frame-spectrality of exponential systems of the type $E(Λ,φ) = \{e^{2πi λ\cdotφ(x)}: λ\inΛ\}$ where the phase function $φ$ is a Borel measurable which is not necessarily linear. A complete characterization of pairs $(Λ,φ)$ for which $E(Λ,φ)$ is an orthogonal basis or a frame for $L^{2}(μ)$ is obtained. In particular, we show that the middle-third Cantor measures and the unit disc, each admits an orthogonal basis with a certain non-linear phase. Under a natural regularity condition on the phase functions, when $μ$ is the Lebesgue measure on $[0,1]$ and $Λ= {\mathbb{Z}},$ we show that only the standard phase functions $φ(x) = \pm x$ are the only possible functions that give rise to orthonormal bases. Surprisingly, however we prove that there exist a greater degree of flexibility, even for continuously differentiable phase functions in higher dimensions. For instance, we were able to describe a large class of functions $φ$ defined on ${\mathbb{R}}^{d}$ such that the system $E(Λ,φ)$ is an orthonormal basis for $L^{2}[0,1]^{d}$ when $d\geq2.$ Moreover, we discuss how our results apply to the discretization problem of unitary representations of locally compact groups for the construction of orthonormal bases. Finally, we conclude the paper by stating several open problems.

A classification of continuous wavelet transforms in dimension three

This paper presents a full catalogue, up to conjugacy and subgroups of finite index, of all matrix groups $H < {\rm GL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ that give rise to a continuous wavelet transform with associated irreducible quasi-regular representation. For each group in this class, coorbit theory allows to consistently define spaces of sparse signals, and to construct atomic decompositions converging simultaneously in a whole range of these spaces. As an application of the classification, we investigate the existence of compactly supported admissible vectors and atoms for the groups.

Regular Sampling on Metabelian Nilpotent Lie Groups

Let $N$ be a simply connected, connected non-commutative nilpotent Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{n}$ having rational structure constants. We assume that $N=P\rtimes M,$ $M$ is commutative, and for all $λ\in \mathfrak{n}^{\ast}$ in general position the subalgebra $\mathfrak{p}=\log(P)$ is a polarization ideal subordinated to $λ$ ($\mathfrak{p}$ is a maximal ideal satisfying $[\mathfrak{p},\mathfrak{p}]\subseteq\kerλ$ for all $λ$ in general position and $\mathfrak{p}$ is necessarily commutative.) Under these assumptions, we prove that there exists a discrete uniform subgroup $Γ\subset N$ such that $L^{2}(N)$ admits band-limited spaces with respect to the group Fourier transform which are sampling spaces with respect to $Γ.$ We also provide explicit sufficient conditions which are easily checked for the existence of sampling spaces. Sufficient conditions for sampling spaces which enjoy the interpolation property are also given. Our result bears a striking resemblance with the well-known Whittaker-Kotel'nikov-Shannon sampling theorem.

Decompositions of Rational Gabor Representations

Let $Γ=\langle T_{k},M_{l}:k\in\mathbb{Z}^{d},l\in B\mathbb{Z}% ^{d}\rangle $ be a group of unitary operators where $T_{k}$ is a translation operator and $M_{l}$ is a modulation operator acting on $L^{2}\left( \mathbb{R}^{d}\right) .$ Assuming that $B$ is a non-singular rational matrix of order $d,$ with at least one rational non-integral entry, we obtain a direct integral irreducible decomposition of the Gabor representation which is defined by the isomorphism $π:\left( \mathbb{Z}_{m}\times B\mathbb{Z}^{d}\right) \rtimes\mathbb{Z}^{d}\rightarrowΓ$ where $π\left( θ,l,k\right) =e^{2πiθ}M_{l}T_{k}.$ We also show that the left regular representation of $\left( \mathbb{Z}_{m}\times B\mathbb{Z}% ^{d}\right) \rtimes\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ which is identified with $Γ$ via $π$ is unitarily equivalent to a direct sum of $\mathrm{card}\left( \left[ Γ,Γ\right] \right) $ many disjoint subrepresentations: $L_{0},L_{1},\cdots,L_{\mathrm{card}\left( \left[ Γ,Γ\right] \right) -1}.$ It is shown that for any $k\neq 1$ the subrepresentation $L_k$ of the left regular representation is disjoint from the Gabor representation. Furthermore, we prove that there is a subrepresentation $L_{1}$ of the left regular representation of $Γ$ which has a subrepresentation equivalent to $π$ if and only if $\left\vert \det B\right\vert \leq1.$ Using a central decomposition of the representation $π$ and a direct integral decomposition of the left regular representation, we derive some important results of Gabor theory. More precisely, a new proof for the density condition for the rational case is obtained. We also derive characteristics of vectors $f$ in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})^{d}$ such that $π(Γ)f$ is a Parseval frame in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})^{d}.$

Bandlimited Wavelets on the Heisenberg Group

Let $\mathbb{H}$ be the three-dimensional Heisenberg group. We introduce a structure on the Heisenberg group which consists of the biregular representation of $\mathbb{H\times H}$ restricted to some discrete subset of $\mathbb{H\times H}$ and a free group of automorphisms $H$ singly generated and acting semi-simply on $\mathbb{H}$. Using well-known theorems borrowed from Gabor theory, we are able to construct simple and computable bandlimited discrete wavelets on the Heisenberg group. Moreover, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of these wavelets.

Dihedral Group Frames which are Maximally Robust to Erasures

Let $n$ be a natural number larger than two. Let $D_{2n}=\langle r,s : r^{n}=s^{2}=e, srs=r^{n-1} \rangle$ be the Dihedral group, and $κ$ an $n$-dimensional unitary representation of $D_{2n}$ acting in $\mathbb{C}^n$ as follows. $(κ(r)v)(j)=v((j-1)\mod n)$ and $(κ(s)v)(j)=v((n-j)\mod n)$ for $v\in\mathbb{C}^n.$ For any representation which is unitarily equivalent to $κ,$ we prove that when $n$ is prime there exists a Zariski open subset $E$ of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ such that for any vector $v\in E,$ any subset of cardinality $n$ of the orbit of $v$ under the action of this representation is a basis for $\mathbb{C}^{n}.$ However, when $n$ is even there is no vector in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ which satisfies this property. As a result, we derive that if $n$ is prime, for almost every (with respect to Lebesgue measure) vector $v$ in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ the $Γ$-orbit of $v$ is a frame which is maximally robust to erasures. We also consider the case where $τ$ is equivalent to an irreducible unitary representation of the Dihedral group acting in a vector space $\mathbf{H}_τ\in\left\{\mathbb{C},\mathbb{C}^2\right\}$ and we provide conditions under which it is possible to find a vector $v\in\mathbf{H}_τ$ such that $τ\left( Γ\right) v$ has the Haar property.

Sampling and Interpolation on Some Non-commutative Nilpotent Lie Groups

Let $N$ be a non-commutative, simply connected, connected, two-step nilpotent Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{n}$ such that $\mathfrak{n=a\oplus b\oplus z}$, $\left[ \mathfrak{a},\mathfrak{b}\right] \subseteq \mathfrak{z},$ the algebras $\mathfrak{a},\mathfrak{b,z}$ are abelian, $\mathfrak{a}=\mathbb{R}\text{-span}\left\{ X_{1},X_{2},\cdots,X_{d}\right\} ,$ and $\mathfrak{b}=\mathbb{R}\text{-span}\left\{ Y_{1},Y_{2},\cdots ,Y_{d}\right\} .$ Also, we assume that $\det\left[ \left[ X_{i}% ,Y_{j}\right] \right] _{1\leq i,j\leq d}$ is a non-vanishing homogeneous polynomial in the unknowns $Z_{1},\cdots,Z_{n-2d}$ where $\left\{ Z_{1},\cdots,Z_{n-2d}\right\} $ is a basis for the center of the Lie algebra. Using well-known facts from time-frequency analysis, we provide some precise sufficient conditions for the existence of sampling spaces with the interpolation property, with respect to some discrete subset of $N$. The result obtained in this work can be seen as a direct application of time-frequency analysis to the theory of nilpotent Lie groups. Several explicit examples are computed. This work is a generalization of recent results obtained for the Heisenberg group by Currey, and Mayeli in \cite{Currey}.

Admissibility For Quasiregular Representations of Exponential Solvable Lie Groups

Let $N$ be a simply connected, connected non-commutative nilpotent Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{n}$ of dimension $n.$ Let $H$ be a subgroup of the automorphism group of $N.$ Assume that $H$ is a commutative, simply connected, connected Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{h}.$ Furthermore, let us assume that the linear adjoint action of $\mathfrak{h}$ on $\mathfrak{n}$ is diagonalizable with non-purely imaginary eigenvalues. Let $τ=\mathrm{Ind}%_{H}^{N\rtimes H} 1$. We obtain an explicit direct integral decomposition for $τ$, including a description of the spectrum as a sub-manifold of $(\mathfrak{n}+\mathfrak{h})^{\ast}$, a formula for the multiplicity function of the unitary irreducible representations occurring in the direct integral, and a precise intertwining operator. Finally, we completely settle the admissibility question of $τ$. In fact, we show that if $G=N\rtimes H$ is unimodular, then $τ$ is never admissible, and if $G$ is nonunimodular, $τ$ is admissible if and only if the intersection of $H$ and the center of $G$ is equal to the identity of the group.

Computing Vergne Polarizing Subalgebras

According to Kirillov's theory, the construction of a unitary irreducible representation of a nilpotent Lie group requires a precise computation of some polarizing subalgebra subordinated to a linear functional in the linear dual of the corresponding Lie algebra. This important step is generally challenging from a computational viewpoint. In this paper, we provide an algorithmic approach to the construction of the well-known Vergne polarizing subalgebras \cite{Corwin}. The algorithms presented in this paper are specifically designed so that they can be implemented in Computer Algebra Systems. We also show there are instances where Vergne's construction could be refined for the sake of efficiency. Finally, we adapt our refined procedure to free nilpotent finite-dimensional Lie algebras of step-two to obtain simple and precise descriptions of Vergne polarizing algebras corresponding to all linear functionals in a Zariski open subset of the linear dual of the corresponding Lie algebra. Several explicit examples are given throughout the paper. Also, a program written for Mathematica is presented at the end of the paper.

Regular Representations of Time-Frequency Groups

In this paper, we study the Plancherel measure of a class of non-connected nilpotent groups which is of special interest in Gabor theory. Let $G$ be a time-frequency group. More precisely, that is $G=\left\langle T_{k},M_{l}:k\in\mathbb{Z}^{d},l\in B\mathbb{Z}^{d}\right\rangle ,$ $T_{k}$, $M_{l}$ are translations and modulations operators acting in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d}),$ and $B$ is a non-singular matrix. We compute the Plancherel measure of the left regular representation of $G\ $which is denoted by $L.$ The action of $G$ on $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ induces a representation which we call a Gabor representation. Motivated by the admissibility of this representation, we compute the decomposition of $L$ into direct integral of irreducible representations by providing a precise description of the unitary dual and its Plancherel measure. As a result, we generalize Hartmut Führ's results which are only obtained for the restricted case where $d=1$, $B=1/L,L\in\mathbb{Z}$ and $L>1.$ Even in the case where $G$ is not type I, we are able to obtain a decomposition of the left regular representation of $G$ into a direct integral decomposition of irreducible representations when $d=1$. Some interesting applications to Gabor theory are given as well. For example, when $B$ is an integral matrix, we are able to obtain a direct integral decomposition of the Gabor representation of $G.$

Sampling Theorems for Some Two-Step Nilpotent Lie Groups

Let $N$ be a simply connected, connected nilpotent Lie group with the following assumptions. Its Lie Lie algebra $\mathfrak{n}$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space over the reals. Moreover, $\mathfrak{n=z}\oplus\mathfrak{b}\oplus\mathfrak{a}$, $\mathfrak{z}$ is the center of $\mathfrak{n}$, $\mathfrak{z} =\mathbb{R}Z_{n-2d}\oplus\mathbb{R}Z_{n-2d-1}\oplus\cdots\oplus \mathbb{R}Z_{1}, \mathfrak{b} =\mathbb{R}Y_{d}\oplus\mathbb{R} Y_{d-1}\oplus\cdots\oplus\mathbb{R}Y_{1}, \mathfrak{a} =\mathbb{R}X_{d}\oplus\mathbb{R}X_{d-1}\oplus\cdots\oplus \mathbb{R}X_{1}.$ Next, assume $\mathfrak{z}\oplus\mathfrak{b}$ is a maximal commutative ideal of $\mathfrak{n},$ $\left[ \mathfrak{a,b}\right] \subseteq\mathfrak{z},$ and $\mathrm{det}\left([X_i,Y_j]\right)_{1\leq i,j\leq d}$ is a non-trivial homogeneous polynomial defined over the ideal $\left[ \mathfrak{n,n}\right] \subseteq\mathfrak{z}.$ We do not assume that $[\mathfrak{a},\mathfrak{a}]$ is generally trivial. We obtain some precise description of band-limited spaces which are sampling subspaces of $L^2(N)$ with respect to some discrete set $Γ$. The set $Γ$ is explicitly constructed by fixing a Jordan-Hölder basis for $\mathfrak{n}.$ We provide sufficient conditions for which a function $f$ is determined from its sampled values on $(f(γ))_{γ\inΓ}.$ We also provide an explicit formula for the corresponding sinc-type functions. Several examples are also computed in the paper.

Unitary Representations of Lattices of Free Nilpotent Lie Groups of Step-Two

Using a theorem proved by Bekka and Driutti, we show that if $\mathfrak{f}$ is a freely generated nilpotent Lie algebra of step-two, then almost every irreducible representation of the corresponding Lie group restricted to some lattice $Γ$ is an irreducible representation of $Γ$ if the dimension of the Lie algebra is odd. However, if the dimension of the Lie algebra is even, then almost every unitary irreducible representation of the Lie group restricted to $Γ$ is reducible.

Bandlimited Spaces on Some 2-step Nilpotent Lie Groups With One Parseval Frame Generator

Let $N$ be a step two connected and simply connected non commutative nilpotent Lie group which is square-integrable modulo the center. Let $Z$ be the center of $N$. Assume that $N=P\rtimes M$ such that $P$, and $M$ are simply connected, connected abelian Lie groups, $M$ acts non-trivially on $P$ by automorphisms and $\dim P/Z=\dim M$. We study band-limited subspaces of $L^2(N)$ which admit Parseval frames generated by discrete translates of a single function. We also find characteristics of band-limited subspaces of $L^2(N)$ which do not admit a single Parseval frame. We also provide some conditions under which continuous wavelets transforms related to the left regular representation admit discretization, by some discrete set $Γ\subset N$. Finally, we show some explicit examples in the last section.

Linear Independence of a Finite Set of Dilations by a One-Parameter Matrix Lie Group

Let $G=\{e^{tA}:t\in\mathbb{R}\}$ be a closed one-parameter subgroup of the general linear group of matrices of order $n$ acting on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ by matrix-vector multiplications. We assume that all eigenvalues of $A$ are rationally related. We study conditions for which the set ${f(e^{t_{1}A}.) ,.,f(e^{t_{m}A}.)} $ is linearly dependent in $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{n}) $ with $1\leq p<\infty.$

Shift-invariant spaces on SI/Z Lie groups

Given a simply connected nilpotent Lie group having unitary irreducible representations that are square-integrable modulo the center (SI/Z), we develop a notion of periodization on the group Fourier transform side, and use this notion to give a characterization of shift-invariant spaces in $L^2(N)$ in terms of range functions. We apply these results to study the structure of frame and Reisz families for shift-invariant spaces. We illustrate these results for the Heisenberg group as well as for other groups with SI/Z representations.

Admissibility For Monomial Representations of Exponential Lie Groups

Let $G$ be a simply connected exponential solvable Lie group, $H$ a closed connected subgroup, and let $τ$ be a representation of $G$ induced from a unitary character $χ_f$ of $H$. The spectrum of $τ$ corresponds via the orbit method to the set $G\cdot A_τ/ G$ of coadjoint orbits that meet the spectral variety $A_τ= f + \h^\perp$. We prove that the spectral measure of $τ$ is absolutely continuous with respect to the Plancherel measure if and only if $H$ acts freely on some point of $A_τ$. As a corollary we show that if $G$ is nonunimodular, then $τ$ has admissible vectors if and only if the preceding orbital condition holds.
